Feels Like Home
Tumblr media
Feels Like Home | AO3 | Rating: M | Main Masterlist
Pairing: Javier Peña x F! Reader
Summary:  They say you can't go home again, but maybe for you and Javi, home isn't a place - it's a person.
Warnings: NSFW. Smut. Language.
Tumblr media
Getting Chucho Peña back up on his feet after a bad fall from the hayloft – that was all you’d been tasked to do.
But you hadn’t considered the prodigal son.
You hadn’t thought about all the ways dark, earthen eyes – eyes that had seen too much – could be so compellingly, devastatingly, hauntingly preoccupying. Hadn’t really thought of how the stories of this larger-than-life individual would pale in comparison to the actual person. Hadn’t really believed that this man and this town would get to you, become so much a part of you that you’re thinking about rejecting a career-changing offer that would see you moving on to bigger (though perhaps not exactly better) things.
Four seasons have passed, and yet, you haven’t felt the itch to pack a bag and hit the road. And because you stuck around, Javi, Chucho, and you have become los tres amigos. Reading books and watching Cheers. Exchanging cards and gifts on birthdays and at Christmas. You host dinner at your place once a month. Javi occasionally pops in during your meal break at the hospital to bring you something decent to eat. And sometimes, his dad will call you nenita – a term of endearment that feels far too precious to be directed toward a drifting, wayward soul like you.
It’s hard not to mull over the what-ifs – especially with how Javi looks beneath the sparking lights of the convention center. Exuding confidence, chit-chatting, and mingling with your coworkers like a pro, all understated power and authority. He stays still while everyone else gets pulled into his orbit, revolving slowly around him, like planets circling the sun. He steers you in that way, too, pulling you into his atmosphere, making it painfully impossible to keep your gaze averted from the fine figure he makes in his charcoal gray suit.
This isn’t the first fundraising event he’s escorted you to. In fact, he’s graciously played the role of plus-one several times. Haughty conversations, dry chicken dinners, watered-down drinks, and office politics – he’s been there and done that. And for a man who says he hated it, that he’s left all that bullshit behind, he’s really good at it, reading the room and owning his space within it better than most of your puffed-up peers.
It’s difficult not to admire him. Get attached to him. To feel as if you’ve made a real, true friend. You don’t have many of those and neither does he. It’s as if you’ve somehow been chosen. That out of all the people in the world, he’s picked you.
Bowling on Thursdays. The little snort that sometimes escapes when he laughs. His gentle manner with horses. The scent of his cologne; a blend of leather, wood, and oakmoss. The way he always refuses dessert, but somehow, ends up finding room for two servings, especially if it’s your homemade peach cobbler. His shoulder – the one you lean on when you nod off during a football game. His arm – the one you grip during scary movies. His ear – the one he lets you talk off when the day has been too hard and too bloody, and you can’t fall asleep.
If you leave, you lose it all. You lose him.
“Is it just me,” Javi prompts with a slight nudge, turning away from the inner circle and leaning in close to speak directly into your ear. “Or are all the doctor jokes really fucking terrible this year?”
His voice – low and amused – cuts through the chatter and clinking cutlery, guiding you out of the spiral of dark thoughts and back into the present. You glance up at him and wonder if that inquisitive, clever mind of his has worked out how you really feel and uncovered what you really think. And if he knows, has he just been too polite to say anything? Even if it’s only to let you down gently?
“Maybe you should teach them a thing or two,” you manage to quip, burying your emotions by taking a rather undignified gulp of merlot.
Javi snorts and shakes his head, “With their egos? Not likely. Look, can we get outta here? Go get some real food?”
You nod, placing your now empty wine glass on the tray of a passing waiter, and snagging your purse up from the table. Javi is quick to take your arm and the lead, guiding you both through the throng and a seemingly endless stream of polite farewells. The elevator, the parking garage, the drive-thru – none of it really registers. It’s not until you’ve fallen into the cushions of your couch, a heavy bag of tacos in hand, and two beers on the coffee table in front of you, that your brain gradually starts to come back online.
“M'starving,” Javi announces, snatching up the takeout bag and plopping down next to you. “Remind me next time to eat before I pick you up.”
He peels off his jacket. Kicks off his shoes. Wriggles his sock-covered toes into the plush carpet and sits forward on the cushion just far enough to reach the table. Large, deft hands drop napkins – one onto your knee and one onto his own – and then, he’s unfurling paper and distributing a half dozen oversized carne asada taquerias onto two paper plates. A brief pause. A rather ferocious bite. A long, low groan.
“Fuck me, that’s good,” he mumbles, cheeks puffed out and comically overfilled.
“Emily Post would not be impressed,” you teasingly chide.
Javi grins and juts his chin, “Hey, get my tie? It’s the one you got me for my birthday, and I don’t want to ruin it.”
Once his messy hands are out of the way, you do as he asks, working the knot free and slipping the silk off with a careful tug. You pop a few buttons for him, too, and he gives you a nod of thanks before digging back in with renewed gusto, washing it all down with long pulls on his beer.
You don’t know how he does it, but his steady, calm demeanor always manages to soothe you. You unclench your jaw. Relax your shoulders. Even eat with him. Once the food’s devoured and the mess is cleaned up, you offer him a nightcap that promises to be better than what he’d been served at the fundraiser, and he happily accepts.
With tumblers in hand, the two of you migrate out to the patio. Javi is quick to indulge in his after-dinner smoke, bringing flame to paper-wrapped tobacco with a practiced flick and inhaling deeply. He fills his lungs with nicotine a few more times before turning his attention to his glass, bringing it to his nose before taking a slow sip.
“Dios mio,” he appreciates aloud. “What is this?”
“Macallan,” you tell him.
“That’s damn good whiskey.”
“It ought to be for five grand a bottle.”
Javi chuckles and lets out a low whistle, “You lift it off a truck or something?”
“It was a gift,” you admit, taking a seat on the outdoor bench. “From Brad.”
He blinks slowly, “Your ex?”
You nod and shrug slightly, “Bastard always did have good taste.”
Javi doesn’t pry – he just smokes and paces, seemingly content for you to either share or plead the fifth. You take a sizable gulp for courage and finally tell him about Alaska, about the brand new, state-of-the-art facility, and what an opportunity it is. You explain the position. Tell him it offers better pay and an extremely generous housing stipend. A year there, maybe two, and you’ll have your pick of any hospital you want to work at going forward.
Brad’s presence, his role as department head, his status as your ex-fiancé, the wholly inappropriate “welcome gift” he supposedly sent on behalf of the entire staff – a gift you’re certain was pilfered from his dad’s private collection – none of it matters. You’re going there for work because you go where you’re needed, nothing more.
“Got the papers inside,” you say quietly. “Just gotta sign ‘em.”
Javi curses. Drops the butt of his cigarette into the remaining inch of whiskey. Sets the glass down a little too hard on the window ledge. It’s tense now, the air between you, the atmosphere filling with acridness neither one of you is accustomed to. He rolls his jaw. You tap your nail against the tumbler. Javier runs a hasty palm over his mustache and then, much to your surprise, he sits down next to you.
Your glass is taken and hastily put aside. Slowly, carefully, as if giving you the chance to pull away, Javi slots his fingers between yours. When you don’t protest, he holds on tight and brings your knuckles to his lips. His palm pressed to your palm; he lowers his head until his furrowed brow meets the back of your hand. It’s so achingly, intimately tender, so unexpected and jarring, that makes your eyes well.
You swallow hard and clear your throat, “Look, Javi, I’m –”
“Don’t,” he interjects with a slow, purposeful shake of his head. “Just… Don’t.”
The moment stretches, unbearable with the weight of the unknown, all nerve-wracking and heady at the same time. Javi eventually looks at you – eyes searching and examining and questioning. Head slightly tilted, a wayward chunk of his hair tumbles out of its’ carefully coiffed place, and you don’t consider your actions when you take back your hand to carefully brush it off his forehead.
“I don’t want you to go,” he murmurs.
You frown and stroke his cheek with your thumb, “I don’t want to, either.”
Javi’s fingertips brush your forearm, and when he leans forward, you meet him in the middle. Your mouths join. Lips brushing, breath stolen and returned. The two of you are traversing unmapped and uncharted territory, but it’s so easy. It's as if you’ve been touching like this, kissing like this, for such a long time.
All languid and unhurried until he licks into your mouth, coating your tongue in hints of vanilla, nutmeg, and smoke, and then, you’re both in pursuit of more. Tripping over each other to get back inside. Both of you going for his belt, and then, your underwear – no finesse or thought of the bedroom just steps away because the couch will work just fine.
Knees sunk into the cushions and cheek mashed into an armrest. Heels kicked off and the skirt of your ankle-length dress tugged up over your hips. Javi explores and discovers you from behind, tongue tasting the unmistakable evidence of your desire, and fingers stoking the flame until you’re begging him to put you out of your misery.
“Condoms,” you croak, gesturing blindly. “In my work bag.”
A low growl. Nips and licks and sucks to the back of your thighs, the curve of your hip, the rounds of your shoulders. You’re melting to the floor, rolling into your back, eyes barely able to focus as he snatches up your battered canvas tote and upends it, the contents spilling out messily and noisily across the carpet.
“Preparing for an orgy?” he teases, letting the line of rubbers unfurl above your head.
“Shut up,” you sass, nudging his thigh with your foot. “You know I had to teach that sex ed class today.”
“Did the hospital supply bananas?”
“Actually, it was cucumbers.”
Javi laughs. Tears open the package. Rucks up his shirt. You watch, gaze hooded as he slides the rubber on. You toss out a compliment to his technique, and he flushes, all hasty to push your legs apart and make room for himself between your splayed thighs.
“It’s been – I haven’t done this in a while,” you admit, bravado lessening slightly.
Javi clicks his tongue, thumbs making small circles on your kneecaps, “Me, neither, cariño. Been saving myself for you.”
Your spluttered laugh brings out his hidden dimples, and then, he kisses you. Smiles gradually fade, amusement giving way to urgency, prompting you to reach for him, guiding him until he’s slowly sinking into you, filling you. And it’s a snug fit, but it’s just right, and when Javi rocks his pelvis, you’re remade. Suddenly cast adrift, in search of an anchor, you dig your fingers into his hair. Seek out his shoulders with your hands. Follow the curve of his spine and twine your legs around him just so you can feel the way flexes and stretches into your touch.
“Don’t stop,” you whisper against the shell of his ear. “Javi, please… Please, don’t stop.”
“I won’t,” he promises against your throat. “You feel so good, mi corazón. Feels like you’re mine. Like you’ve always been mine. Fuck.”
His words thrum through you, wreaking havoc, curling your spine, bringing even more heat to your cheeks. There’s no hiding the way your legs are trembling, no stopping your body from bearing down, from clenching hard, from trying to keep him deep inside for as long as possible. His name spills out from your lips like marbles on a wooden floor, the reverent mantra smothered only by his mouth seeking yours.
“Say you’ll stay with me,” Javi demands, teeth nipping your chin.
You nod frantically, “Yes. Yes, I’ll stay with you.”
In possession of you, of your agreement, Javi’s hold becomes unforgiving – fingertips digging into the meat of your hip and the nape of your neck. His thrusts turn pointedly devastating – retreating and surging forward, all precise and measured, purposeful in the way he seems to take control, bringing you to orgasm for the third time with a broad, self-satisfied smile that isn’t as humble as he probably thinks it is.
When he finally comes, he buries himself to the hilt, hips stuttering, stubble rubbing against your cheek as he muffles his groans of pleasure into the crook of your neck. As the two of you lie together in the afterglow, his head pillowed by your breasts, your arms and legs wrapped around him, breaths slowing until they match, the truth of you, of him, becomes undeniably clear.
Home isn’t a place. It’s a person.
And you’ve finally found each other.

Dead City, Ep 4: Everyone Gets a Prize - Analysis
@wdway
I'm hoping that this is a way that they would set up Maggie having a flashback. Maybe a scene of Beth on the other side of the doorway talking to her Maggie from s4. A new scene build on what we did see that would be great.
The other thing that stood out to me and I'm not giving anything away on the storyline but the showrunners comments at the end of episode, it really caught my attention because he compared something that happened in the episode a scene in Les Miserables. I never read the book, but the broadway musical play is my all-time favorite, so I really caught that remark. I thought what a strange connection he's making to a very famous book and musical plat about the French Revolution.
@galadrieljones
I never really watch the commentary after the show unless you guys say I should (I know I know I should lol) so I’d be interested to know the comparison to Les Mis!!!! I love Les Mis. There is I guess kind of a Fantine/Cosette thing going with Maggie and Ginny and ofc Negan could be compared to Jean Valjean, the ex-con who is still being pursued by moral purist Javert (re: Armstrong). Great catch with the French comparison
Also I have similar hopes re: flashbacks but more so with Daryl’s spin-off. Idk how they will skirt the Beth issue if they do flashbacks. I think a lot of ppl would notice if they did.
@wdway
He compared the scene between Negan and Armstrong with Jean Valjean saving Javert. The comparison was that the hunted saved the hunter.
@galadrieljones
I never thought of Negan as a Jean Valjean character, but I love it.
@wdway
Neither had I, but I still think that the comparison to Les Miserables is a bit pushing it. I think it was more about just putting that in the minds of the viewers.
@galadrieljones
Okay so it's not a spoiler so I will just share my google results. It was really kind of weird like it made me blink multiple times rapidly and lean so close to the computer I almost bumped it with my nose lol. This is what I saw:
Tumblr media
NAFC, the way it's stylized, looks like it's some sort of fighting guild.
I was fully prepared for NAFC to not be real btw, and it's not. But I wasn't prepared for the first and only real hit for what NAFC means irl
It's not so much what it is, but WHERE
Tumblr media
It's literally located AT King Street Station, on the DC Metrorail, which begins in Alexandria, VA
Idk if you guys remember my insane rant about the DC Metrorail, which was actually the rant that got @twdmusicboxmystery to invite me into your group chat
Tumblr media
I surmised after Acheron 1, due to Negan's subway directions, that they probably ed the DC metrorail subway at the King Street Station in Alexandria. Negan's subway directions took them toward the Shady Grove stop, which is a terminus: “Yellow Line North. Switch to Blue at Reagan National, then hop the Red toward Bethesda.” Anyway, this is a wild callback to Acheron Pt. 1 and 2, which largely take place in the DC underground. With Maggie and her group now ing the NYC subway, I can't help but think this is on purpose.
Tumblr media
Anyway, this isn't a Bethyl thing. But it's just like, for me, confirmation that they are ABSOLUTELY hiding clues in the real world.
They are counting on certain types of fans to google stuff and find these clues, like the coordinates, which lead to the Canary Islands
This is also taking me way back to Acheron 1. One of the subway stops they pass, and Daryl shines his light conspicuously on the sign, is the "Pyron" Station:
Tumblr media
The Shady Grove underneath means that it is the terminus for that particular line.
When I initially googled "Pyron Shady Grove" a million years ago, idk what I was expecting. Essentially, it lead me to the Shady Grove stop on the DC metro (which is real), but that word, "pyron," was bizarre. It means literally nothing. I was kind of thrown for a loop as to why they included that nothing word.
Note that if you search these keywords now, you'll first get a hit for this fictional subway station, but when I initially googled "Pyron Shady Grove," that page hadn't been created yet, so at the time, when searched together, these keywords showed very few hits. There was one, however, that I could make heads or tails of. It was a hit for a cemetery, called the "Northcutt Pyron Cemetery," which is in Acworth, Georgia.
Not three miles from this cemetery is another cemetery, called the Shady Grove Cemetery. Acworth is in Cobb County, GA. Cobb County is where the filming location was for the CDC in season 1. Further, the Shady Grove Cemetery has a church. It's called the Shady Grove Baptist Church. It looks SO familiar, but I don't think it's ever been filmed at. It's not exactly a "white church," but it has a white steeple:
Tumblr media
ANYWAY, Idk if you remember @twdmusicboxmystery, but I spammed you with this 84 years ago in your DMs, and that's the day you invited me to this group chat. I remember it as "my audition" to be a TD theorist LOL.
At the time ultimately I was like, no I am being a conspiracy theorist, BUT, this NFCA thing has made me wonder if the writers do think about and test-run the google algorithm before they make these choices. For example, there is like a net zero change that they chose "NFCA" not knowing that the search results would turn up a certain hit.
Just like "Biomedicine." There's a net zero chance they chose "Biomedicine DMII" for the WB coda not knowing that "France Biomedicine" would turn up the Pasteur Institute.
Now, per the word "pyron." I remember talking to my husband about how the google algo works. He told me that the algo can be spammed in certain ways to promote search hits, but that this would never really work now UNLESS the search term in question is super unique, ie: "pyron," which is REALLY unique. Can it be a coincidence that there's a cemetery in Cobb County, GA with the extremely unique word "pyron" in its name? And that that said cemetery would be located so close to another cemetery with the words "Shady Grove" in its name? And that the Shady Grove Cemetery has a church with a white steeple? And that Cobb County contains multiple filming locations for TWD, including the filming location for the CDC? I mean ofc it can be a coincidence! But after Acheron, Pt. 1, I mostly stopped thinking about the cemetery coincidence because it just never came up again, UNTIL NOW, when I'm taken BACK to Acheron 1 via another real world clue related to the DC metrorail, and now I'm really starting to wonder. Are these...actual clues?
(Oh also I feel it's important to mention that the Pyron Shady Grove search can STILL be replicated to this day. Even though there is now a bunch of hits pertaining to it as a fictional location in TWDU, you can still find the hit for the cemetery on page 1 of Google)
Honestly, if I didn't know any better, I'd say that this clue is directing us back to this moment to rewatch, ie: the DC metrorail, the subway scene in Acheron 1. Maybe to google the Pyron Shady Grove sign, if we haven't already, on like a wild goose chase. Ofc I am a conspiracy theorist so...
Tumblr media
@wdway
What struck me when I was reading is how you were talking about (Washington) DC metro rail in s11 and now you're talking about the DC subway in Dead City spin-off. Try and convince me that wasn't on purpose. Try. No, really I don't think you can convince me.
@galadrieljones
Not to mention that Acheron 1 and 2 are basically 100% Maggie/Negan tension and here we are…
@wdway
Okay, Miss Research Queen of TWDU. Here's your assignment. I've only watched the episode once, I only took one shot, I know it must mean something because Maggie all but come to a complete stop when she saw it. Let's see what magic you can do.
Tumblr media
I have to tell you my mind went straight to some possible chapter and verse in the Bible. I have no idea what it could be. That's as far as I got.
@galadrieljones
I have not had time to look into that one yet tho it is 100% in my notes. My only initial observation was that Pennsylvania could be a reference to Rick and the CRM. I had not thought of the Bible but that is genius !
Okay I found out that LIRR Access means Long Island Railroad Access so we’re really cookin lol
Maggie really stares at this sign for a long time. I noticed that. She had a lot of interesting internal moments in this episode.
So literally it means 31st street-38th street. You can access the LIRR from Penn Station which is on 31st. I think I recall them talking about ing via “the thirties” when they were trying to decide how to get into the Croat’s sanctuary
Per your idea I also searched for Bible passages at 31:8. Everything comes up Deuteronomy 31:8 - “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
@twdmusicboxmystery
While you were both mentioning Acheron and how it was all Maggie/Negan tension, I had a thought. If those episodes foreshadowed the current Maggie/Negan story in DC (and they totally do) the that might be a hint to where Daryl is while DC is happening. In Acheron and the following episodes, he was with Leah and the Reapers. So, while Maggie and Negan are in NY, is he with Beth? The CRM? Is that why Maggie didn’t ask him along? Probably. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@galadrieljones
Yeah, I was trying to think along those same lines but I never got quite that far. Like, if this is showing us that Acheron was foreshadowing, what else from season 11 is foreshadowing? In 11a, it’s a bit inverted, as it’s Maggie being hunted, and now it’s Negan. Their relationship is also growing. It’s feeling healthier, or like there’s hope they can live side by side. Like that they no longer constantly want to kill each other.
These are inversions. In Acheron, Daryl runs off after Dog and “goes down the rabbit hole” alone. It’s worth noting that Carol isn’t even along. She’s back home, but she’s looking for someone—Connie. Daryl ends up looking a Beth imposter in the eye and then he’s abducted. He infiltrates an enemy faction and helps bring them down from the inside. Looks like in the spin-off, he may also find himself face to face with a Beth lookalike and fighting against an enemy faction.
Didn’t we hear in some leaked footage or something that the nun refers to Daryl as “the one,” or something like that? In Rendition, Pope refers to Daryl as a Chosen One. There’s a lot of parallel. Idk but it also seems weird that in both season 11 and the spin-off there’s a Beth lookalike. One is a nun, one works for a “Pope.” Will Beth actual be in some way entangled with Catholic imagery? I keep coming back to the DaVinci Code and the Louvre but it’s all to far and wide yet to find a template.
@wdway
I just want to throw out some thoughts I had while reading comments above. Acheron 1,2 is Maggie's mission that Daryl is helping her with. In RIP Maggie gives Daryl a mission to go explore for new communities.
At the end of Acheron 1, Daryl leaves Maggie and the group but tells Maggie that he'll meet up with her at the other end. Daryl leaves the group to go look for Dog (Dog=Beth?) because he heard Dog heard dog barking in the distance. He goes through an unknown space searching for Dog. I want to point out that it is at the other side of the tunnel where Daryl miraculously finds the Morningstar (Sirius/Beth?) that we hadn't seen for a long time.
Daryl and Dog fight walkers and sees a mural of how the rich uses their power over the poor but the poor rebel and bring down the rich (Commonwealth?). In this parallel tunnel/world to Maggie and group he comes across belongings of a brother and sister whose family has left them and that they go looking for (possibly the orphanage with the religious order of nuns).
Daryl and dog eventually makes their way back to Maggie and group just in time to join the fight and help save them. They all then meets the Reapers. This sequence of events are not exactly in the order that we saw them in the show, it's out of sequence, kind of like how the last scenes of RIP were.
On a fun note I've been watching the old TV series Medium. I always loved watching it back when it was airing. Guess who I saw today in an episode, a very young Kary Payton/Ezekiel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@twdmusicboxmystery
Lol. He’s a baby!
Love your thoughts on the Acheron symbolism. Totally agree! I hadn’t gone through and figured out details, but it’s exactly the kind of thing I was thinking.
I was curious about the song that played in the background during the entire arena sequence. The lyrics are in another language, but the subtitles kept popping up with the name of the song, which made it seem important. So, I just googled it. The translation may be rough, but even so, there are definitely some fun Beth references here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It almost has a "Struggling Man" vibe to it.
@wdway
You had me with the title, Dawn Will Cry.
@galadrieljones
Okay, also, guys I'm going to just share my general notes on "Everybody Wins a Prize" now, since I've got a bit of time! There were some interesting callbacks here, mainly, I thought, to season 4/5 and also to Glenn.
There were two death fake-outs in the episode. The first one was Hershel. The scene where they find the young boy in the chair, with Negan picking up his head, revealing it to be somebody else, and a live walker, really reminded me of the scene in Try when Daryl and Aaron find the blond walker, Daryl picks up her head, and she is NOT Beth.
Tommaso also has a death fake-out, when he's taken away by walkers and then reemerges. A lot of ppl on social media are worried that Tommaso has been bitten and that they're hiding it from us, and while I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case, I'm not so sure. It reminded me more of Tyreese in the end of "Isolation," when the car headed to the Veterinary College gets overwhelmed by walkers. The group escapes, but Tyreese stays behind, seemingly consumed by the horde. He ends up escaping unscathed, however. Ofc, he does die later on. So I'm not sure what this indicates.
Maggie's harmonica story was really interesting to me. It's a music reference and reminded me of Beth.
There is a crumbled, broken clock in this episode, which is another reference to seasons 4/5, particularly "Still" and "WHAWGO"
Tumblr media
There are major cop references in this episode. They are in a massive parking garage, and Maggie shown near multiple cop cars
Tumblr media
There is also a Winnebago in the parking garage. It's shown two times.
Tumblr media
It's a Winnebago "Warrior," which is a real type of Winnebago and also a song by the Dead Kennedys
Bird cage sighting
Tumblr media
There's a major visual Glenn reference with the CD as well, which the young woman with the short hair inserts into the AV system before turning it on and leaving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's the same exact shot
Reference to things "going sideways." I can't remember if this is common in TWD, but it's definitely mentioned in Coda, I think by Daryl.
Tumblr media
And we've already discussed this, but the Subway is playing a big role here, which feels like a redirect back to Acheron 1 and 2.
Tumblr media
Also, back to the harmonica, that whole part was a bit odd. It seems to come out of nowhere, and we never get to see who's playing it. It's almost like the wolf howling in "Diverged," ie: a clear audio cue and signal toward something. Maggie has her story and clearly she's thinking of Hershel, but both times it plays, she looks very inward and a bit confused. She has a lot of these "looks" in this episode, like she's remembering or realizing something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of Hershel, we never saw him or any reference to him in this episode. There was also no reference to him in the preview for next week's. Based on his type of arc, it seems like he is going to be forced to survive in some way. It pulls reminders of both Andrea and Beth, who at one point have death wishes, or seem unwilling to survive. But when push comes to shove, they learn they want to live. I wonder if that will happen to Hershel.
There's also another shoe/boot reference in this episode. Negan and Armstrong end up in a shoe repair shop.
Tumblr media
There is another Kennedy reference (re: Winnebago Warrior) via the Taxi with a flat rate service to JFK airport
Tumblr media
I think this is it for my notes.
(aside from the crazy NAFC thing)
@wdway
I have some things to add to your episode list. First I want to say there is a reference to young Herschel, it's when Maggie is remembering when Herschel was pulled away and taken.
Tumblr media
I think all the meat is ham.
Tumblr media
A total call back to Andrea with the governor. The girl actually reminded me of the Tales episode with the one armed girl in The Preserve. More instruments for harm or for good depending on the person using them and their intentions. For me a bright Spotlight is always a call back to the lights around Beth at Grady especially Slabtown
Tumblr media
I red fire extinguisher.
Tumblr media
What looks like a single candle in the dark, a reference from Daryl about Beth. But it's over on the left side that's really intriguing, because there's what appears to be a red fire pull alarm and above it we only see two lines of a sign, I think the first word is in red, AND RETURN.
Tumblr media
You mentioned the shoe repair store did you notice this.
Tumblr media
@galadrieljones
The candle was memorable to me too and also reminded me of Beth and the last supper. It was used as a delayed fuse for the explosive bins which ignite the methane and blow the barricades, letting the walkers into the arena. I was trying to think of other instances of this, aside from the hwatcha.
@wdway
It reminded me of the scene in RIP where they rigged the record player and the bombs and when they blew them up wasn't the record playing mentioned jfk?
@galadrieljones
Turtle?
@wdway
It definitely looks like a turtle to me. I should say a paperweight turtle, haha.
@galadrieljones
I did but I didn’t write it down!! I was overwhelmed with imagery and forgot till just now
@wdway
Not sure exactly what this says other than we can make out the year so it was purposely done this is when they were walking through the garage. Of course I obviously enlarged it.
I feel the vase near the paperweight Turtle to be interesting, it looks familiar
I was also going to say all the things that relate to jfk. The president that was shot in the head on the 22nd of November.
@wdway replied to themself
The vase looks Greek to me.
@galadrieljones
That’s what I was trying to think of! Thank you. And yes the song is “Cult of Personality” by Living Color. There’s a Kennedy ref in the song (among many references) and I think a sound clip of one of his speeches?
Also, I like your comparison of the urn to a Grecian Urn. That really stands out in a shoe repair shop. Idk if it could be a reference to the famous Keats poem Ode in a Grecian Urn which is all about the silence and yet actually shares a lot of themes with FG’s sermon in WHAWGO, ie: what lives and what is seen is temporary, but that which cannot be seen, and which exists only hypothetically or in the realm of belief (in this case, art), is eternal. I remember Keats well from college. This is his most famous Ode and contains the famous line “Beauty is truth, truth beauty.”
I may be reading too much into this but there’s already apparently been a Les Miserables reference in DC and like I said earlier a shoe repair shop is an odd setting for a Grecian Urn
Also sorry for all the typos above lol. I got excited about the possibility of a Keats reference Would fit nicely with all the Frost references. Is Gimple a poetry fan?
There’s a stanza in Ode on a Grecian Urn that that references basically the eternal truth of unrealized love: Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on[…] Really reminds me of FG’s sermon. This stanza reminds me of Daryl and Beth, in how they never kiss and so their love is sort of suspended between life and death. It is initiated but never realized and in this lives forever. What never lived can never die. Seems romantic, but we see how this lack of closure has ruined Daryl: Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss, Though winning near the goal—yet, do not grieve; She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss, For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
This stanza is specifically about love and how a lover who is never kissed or with whom love is never realized will remain forever young, and the love will never die. Once again, that which never lives, never dies. It could be about the bittersweet of a short life. Keats had tuberculosis and died very young.
(I’ll stop with the poetry now LOL. Nuns and poetry; a big day for me )
@wdway
Seriously, if TWD can drop hints using Frost references than why not Keats! It is not like they're leaving this for the general audience. And that's not a slam on them, it's just that they leave these types of things for a very few. Probably more than we realized, but still in the scheme of things a very small amount of people. I would have never thought of the poem by Keats, but together I helped to spark the thought for you and I think it's very valid. The poems beautiful and it fits Daryl memory of Beth. For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
About the strict order of the nuns. Did that not remind you of the very zealous monk dressed man on a mission from the church in the book/ movie, The DaVinci code? Certainly feels that way to me.
@galadrieljones
Good call, yeah I think his name was Silas
@wdway
Silas A tie in to TWB?
@galadrieljones
Probably on purpose! Lol. The names in WB are really on the nose in some ways: “Hope,” “Iris,” “Leo,” “Lyla” (Lie-la)
@wdway
Definitely. Iris is not only a flower but could always be the iris of the eye.
Negan's been talking an awful lot about Hope lately
@galadrieljones
Yes that’s how I see it, ie: Iris “sees.”
Good point. Remember the French doctor too in the coda. She says the phrase “hope beyond hope” twice
@wdway
Yes, and remember how I went through and compared it to the Beth's monologue and Inmates. Her speaking of hope. And those episodes were written by the same person.
@galadrieljones
Hope was staying with Dr. Ellis to continue their research. He seems to be affiliated with the French teams, somehow. Eugene references him in connection to the Human Genome Project. At the Pasteur Institude, they specifically are known for DNA sequencing new viruses and pathogens. Hope is near?
@galadrieljones
Wait which writer?
@wdway
Matthew Negrete.
@wdway
He was also the showrunner for tbw
@wdway
He and Canning Powell wrote, Inmates, Slabtown and others. He was the showrunner for TWB she the showrunner for Tales, I believe.
@galadrieljones
Right! Ty. Also wrote Indifference, Slabtown, and Consumed
Yep Powell was showrunner for Tales!
She also wrote Davon specifically
@wdway
Yes. Remember I did that long list of all of his episodes. It's been a couple of months but Liesel used it on her post so you could probably go back and find the whole thing.
It does same as if these writers communicate with each other. That there is an ultimate storyline that ties this all together. Don't tell the carylers they would never believe it, haha. I couldn't help myself.
@galadrieljones
Yeah i did a similar thing some time ago, trying to see whether there was a “cabal” of writers who know or have insight into Gimple’s “Grand Scheme.” It was like Kang, Negrete, Powell, and Cory Reid.

why do the people who age up fictional characters get hate but the writers who are legal and share smut with real life minors dont get any hate at all
Hi Anon, this is going to go on for a while. Sorry, sorta.
I'm going to answer this as best I can and I hope you find some closure or at the very least, some part of something you were looking for.
The long and short of it is, I don't know.
I think maybe because the stuff on the internet is so much more easily accessible is one of the main reasons (we) fanfic writers are such direct targets. Sure, I know books are everywhere, too. Though, don't stores card for stuff like that? I haven't purchased a paper copy of anything for so long that I don't know what the protocol is. And I look well over 18+ so maybe they just don't bother carding people who look it.
There are plenty of books out there that are not appropriate for anyone under the age of 18. Possibly - depending on one's beliefs - for people over the age of 18.
That's not for me to decide, though.
What I DO MAKE SURE TO DO is label each piece of writing I do that is not for a younger audience and put in my bio that what I write is not for the consumption of anyone under 18. I believe my exact words were "This shit show is 18+. You've been warned." Something like that.
"18+ MINORS DO NOT INTERACT 18+"
I put a second 18+ in case the first one was missed.
I think it's just a matter of access. The internet is, for all intents and purposes, free, once you have an opening to it you can get damn near anything you really want to see on it without parental consent. Unless you have parents who have put a block on this dumpster fire. In which case, you should make a mental note to thank them when you're grown and see just what the Christ is going on out here sometimes, lol. If you're in a bookstore and you want to buy a copy of Playboy, you're going to be shut down from your attempt if you're ... oh, say 15? 16? Either that or heavily carded/ID'd. And if you don't provide verifiable proof of your age, they should turn you away.
I'm not saying that because this stuff is so easy to get to that it's ok by any means for any minor to read. I wish that everyone who isn't of legal age (here or wherever they reside) would heed the warnings. They're there for a reason.
Now, I'm going to touch on aging up characters. I'm guilty of not always putting that I aged up whoever I was writing about if they needed to be. But THEY'RE FAKE. They're lines. They're art. They're paper, basically. Ink and paper. So I don't understand how someone can go from blasting an actual pedo to getting on here and saying that fanfic writers are just as bad. It pisses me off, if I'm being honest. The comparison is quite a stretch, I think. Because while I am not that faithful about documenting that I aged up characters, in my head, they're no younger than 21-40. And that's probably why I don't say I am aging them up because I just don't see them as minors. I've noticed that male characters in anime often look considerably older than they are. Maybe that's because they're the hero of the day or whatever. And I don't write about female characters. Not because I hate them, but I really just don't have any interest in doing that.
The vast majority of us all make it a point to say that the character(s) we write about are of legal age to partake in such ... activities. I don't know. I went through a phase where I felt like absolute shit about myself because of some of the stuff I read about people (on HERE - other writers) comparing someone who abuses an actual minor to a writer that talks about getting down and dirty with a 17 yr old superhero (again, they don't exist). But when I came to the conclusion (very shortly after reading those opinions) that I would never never never ever ever ever do anything so fucking disgusting, I got over it.
There are miles between reality and fiction. If someone else can't separate the two, maybe they're the ones who need the help?
The whole premise of that world, the anime world, is the impossible. Is it not? And I'm not saying in any capacity is it ok to look at someone and assume just because they look older that it must be ok to engage with them. IT'S NOT.
I hope this offered you some clarity, Anon. And I apologize for going off. I guess your question was a good one to make me think so much.

13. worst blorboficiation
(Ref: this ask.)
Ooh, boy. I mean, it's Snape, yeah? It's gotta be.
This isn't even really the fandom's fault, in my opinion. Around Book 5, Snape's character takes a hard pivot from Antagonist into Morally Grey Deuteragonist, and we start ramping up to the big reveal at the end of Book 7, which is his childhood friendship with Lily. Cool. Interesting. Unfortunately, the books do this by immediately shotgunning the core of his character for 1-4, which is that he is a total jackass to children, and quite seriously abusive to unpopular kids like Neville (threatens to kill his pet, quite possibly would've if Hermione hadn't intervened) and Hermione ("I see no difference" when her teeth are jinxed — sir, that's a thirteen-year-old girl. Crucio is not enough). Up through Prisoner of Azkaban, he's an stunted bully who takes his feelings out on children; then he kind of disappears for a book, and when he comes back in OOTP, he's overshadowed by Umbridge, who's so astonishingly cruel it makes him look almost valorous in comparison. Then you get HBP, and his pact with Narcissa, which aligns him with Dumbledore and also casts him in the role of protecting a child (FOR ONCE), and by the time DH rolls around, it's been so long since we've seen him as he was in Sorcerer's Stone that we've mostly forgotten how awful he actually was. (True, he killed Dumbledore, but that only reads as a strike against him on your first readthrough of the series; if you know what's actually going on, it's another mark in his favor.)
I mean, stuff like this happens all the time, where First Installment Weirdness gets overlooked for the more interesting character work that follows. But I think that Deathly Hallows, and in particular the Epilogue, make him out to be this sad martyr who led this deeply unlucky life, when the reality is that he is everything that's wrong with himself, and he caused every problem he ever had. Which is such a goddamn fascinating character anyway I don't know why the books didn't stick with that instead of the trite martyr shit.
I should admit that I am guilty of doing this — my fic "The Climb" is a Severitus story that spins Snape in a very different direction than he goes in canon, basically diverging from the Potters' death, and it definitely leans into the Soft Snape trend. Climb!Severus is my blorbo, and I'm guilty. (That's the third act twist of this post, right, that the worst blorbo is one of MY guys.) But that's because I so dearly wish that the Severus from 5-7 had been there all along, so that we wouldn't have to sit here wondering why Harry Potter named his son after the teacher who made his best friend cry.

In 10 words or less tell us about your favorite fanfiction
Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh this is kind of embarrassing
"Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh"
The first thing that springs to mind is the fanfiction I recently read called "The City and the City," by China Mieville. It is probably the only book I have ever read on audiobook with the word "fuck" in every single page, and it takes place in a world that looks suspiciously like the world of "Watchmen," with government agencies that seem to have powers beyond anything humans should or will ever have (they might be a cult, you see), a corrupt central leader who seems to have "won" an election by "electing" an opponent, a series of unexplained, ominous deaths, and various other things that would seem to be plot spoilers but in fact are plot threads which are never explained
Anyway, the book has a great premise (and some cool things about the way it's narrated) but the characters are boring and don't do anything, and some of the characters are annoying. The story itself was a slog to get through.
I also read some fanfiction about "Dune" when I was 12, which is where the comparison with "Watchmen" comes from
On the plus side, the fanfiction was really entertaining – it featured the author's headcanon that a character (I think they were Duke Leto?) was part of a really secret, powerful cult. (This is actually kind of similar to the way Mieville's world works, just with a different focus, and it was really cool that the author took it in a completely different direction!) It had gore, in the sense of the sort of blood and organ guts that only appear on certain kinds of books aimed at certain kinds of young people, where the "certain kinds of young people" were me, but it wasn't the kind of gore that would turn me off if I saw it on a bookshelf in my target audience's homes. I liked it, it was cool.
There was also a fanfiction of another book about a secret society that also had sex stuff, although the sex stuff was even more tame. This one was less well written, though. "I am going to have sex with a man. It's a good thing. He's my boyfriend, and we are good for each other." A certain amount of this kind of thing has kind of poisoned my ability to tell when the sex in a fanfiction is just the kind of sex that happens in any normal book written by some guy, because that isn't very sexy, and this is the kind of thing that isn't.
Anyhow that's the best 10 words I can come up with about the best fanfiction, and it might as well be 10,000.
Edit: oh, and it was on a site that was a huge fan site for Twilight when I read it, so it was pretty much an instant fanfiction.

20, 22, 24 for Kerra 👀
*eyes emoji back atcha* Time for Kerra asks! :D
20. In what ways does your character compare themselves to others? Do they do this for the sake of self-validation, or self-criticism?
Ooh, an interesting one! Kerra's very hard on herself, but that type of self-criticism isn't really in the form of direct comparison--more in "I've set these standards/regulations for myself, in part because of things others have told me I need to do, and so when I don't meet these Incredibly High standards, I will be incredibly harsh on myself for it." (Note: she has gotten better at not doing this, but...ye.)
When she does compare herself to others, it's usually in an effort to understand them better or, on occasion, for self-validation of a sort. This is something X would have done or would do, this is what Y would want, etc.
22. What does your character like in other people?
In a very broad sense: caring and trying, I guess might be a good way to say it. Caring about something/someone, being willing to try incredibly hard to reach it/help them/help themself, and whatever other variations are on the theme. It doesn't guarantee that she's going to get along with whoever has those two traits because exactly what/who someone cares about and what someone's trying to accomplish can have a wide range of variations, and Kerra won't agree (and in some cases will vehemently disagree) with all of them--but all of her favorite people fit into this category for sure.
24. How quick is your character to trust someone else?
Hmmm. Does Kerra trust people easily? The short answer is “probably more easily than she should, even if she’s usually right”. The slightly longer answer is that she’s good at reading people (even without the advantage of her empathy power) and she knows it. She doesn’t quite judge a book by its cover, but at the same time…kinda? It’s maybe like if you judged a book by its cover and a decent idea of the themes covered in it, I guess, if that makes sense. She’s never (nowadays) all in on trusting someone right after she meets them, but she will kinda be like “okay, this is someone I think I can trust” or “this is someone I might not be able to” and then proceed from there.

You're genuinely making me want to try reading them again so badly give me a sec to like, pull them up for motivation. (93 issues? Insane fam) (also again your comic site is great lmao, like just for instance I just pulled up the first issue of bombshells NO pop-up ads, NO leaving the page. If I'd used mine the second I clicked the search bar I would've been sent to a scam site I had to back space from before it could load, then when I clicked on the actual comic there'd be a 50/50 chance that would happen again, same as when I clicked on the specific issue, and then there would've been a giant pop up over the whole comic that I'd either have to read around or exit and if would send me to another site, or open another tab, and would only be gone for like 2 minutes tops, so again, you're a life saver lmao this is GREAT)
That all sounds very interesting!!! That's very exciting!!!
and Barda isn't as BIG as I like my Big Barda, that's a bit of a con for me, but she is still very pretty and I appreciate the mention she deserves to be in a  wlw relationship all the time. (Is there a girl doctor light in DC like normally? That's a genuine question idfk)
I DO honestly mostly agree everyone needs to love things and it's so exciting. But I started talking about orcas for like 10 seconds and I shit you not the mental health worker said "hey have you heard of Asperger's?" (I also get asked "have you ever thought of being a marine biologist?" And I say "no that sounds really boring" and then I get yelled at)
I've never been to SeaWorld (or anything of the sort) bit as a kid I BEGGED to go to Marineland so I get it. I, obviously, do not support that anymore. I haven't done anything like that but I want to go to British Columbia SO BAD to go whale watching. All of my writing is set in BC (a place I've NEVER BEEN) just because I long to be by the whales lmao. I NEED to see orcas before I die. I would think it's stupidity. I GENUINELY wonder, if I was like swimming in the ocean and a pod of orcas came up to me, if I would remember y'know, COMMON SENSE and leave the water, or if I'd just be so blinded by love I'd be like !!! Oh my god hey guys!! Hey buddies!!! Wanna play fetch?? Wanna be pet??? Because I'm NOT dumb but I HAVE loved them my entire life so they should just also love me instinctively.
dude that sounds SO FUN we should become Spies. I can talk about whales forever. My phone case is called like "Canadian whales" or "whales of the Hudson's Bay" (I think it's the former bit it's just belugas and orcas and Canada has more whales than that but The Hudson's Bay doesn't???) But yeah it's covered in whales. I can go ALL day. And with an AUDIENCE of ORCAS THEMSELVES???
My mother and brother and an ex-bestfriemd all loved/ liked agents of shield so I get it!! And Peggy!! I love like her style and her everything honestly. I had to do an assignment where I wrote a diary as a solider years ago in school and I drew a portrait of his wife and everyone was like 'thay looks like the girl from captain america" as though that wasn't the point? Why would I draw anyone else??
It's volumes, I barely buy issues because they're so delicate and that scares me, but I bought a couple individual issues of SAGA this year as they came out and I think *they* were 4$ each? And as for bombshells, as a direct comparison I'll check mine to tell you bit a) I bought it years ago (proves have gone up since) and b) I just recently reorganized my bookshelves but don't really have space for my comics anymore so I couldn't keep it in alphabetical order and I have literally no idea where bombshells is.
Okay so it was under a lot of comics and it was very hard to get at and I need to figure out what the fuck to do with my comic collection. But I bought it at Indigo (Canada's main book retailer, essentially our Barnes and Noble) so it sold for normal retail value and it was 22.99$ CAD. I remember it being more expensive? But I also had no job then because it was many years ago so. The most recent one I bought was definitely either 30 or 40$ but it's also like half of the green arrow and black canary run. (apparently the Hardcover Injustice: Góðs Among us year four volume 1 should be 27.99$ and the paperback should be 19.99, but most of my paper back (I don't think that's what they're called in comics?) Are 22.99$ like bombshells. The green arrow and black canary comic was 45.99$ and so is my deluxe rebirth justice league comic that I bought from Dollarama bit again I only paid > 5$ for two of those)

That could be good!!
That's faid yeah I don't like when they don't that either. It's cool to know it's all cohesive ( unlike how the current BOP started with Dinah talking with Oliver when in current green arrow comics he's "missing" (I won't like spoil the rest that's literally the plot so it's not intrusive if you haven't read them: Dinah's a fairly active character so far if you were interested but obviously it IS a green arrow comic and I always get annoyed when he's the main character) but it IS frustrating (and, if I were buying them as they came out, more expensive I'd think?)
I didn't even know that it moved!! And I really just know her from Gotham city garage and Injustice 2, so not like,,, canon things) and I love that the three mom's were so important you mentioned it twice thats wonderful I trust that they're very good
It is now OPEN on my phone so hopefully I'll get to it bit I won't be starting it immediately since I have go work early tomorrow but hopefully that will be SOON and I absolutely will
Oh dw I will talk about my mental health relentlessly and do not mind when people do it back so you're good. But I actually get that pretty much exactly so maybe it's kind of a common thing? I don't know how I feel about libraries (the last time I went to one was a year ago for my friend and I just read a book on dolphins while he looked for dantes inferno) but the used book thing is a big one. I have issues in thrift stores entirely but my town has a big book sale once a year where it's all just used books and I go every year and buy SO MANY books but I have go wash my hands as soon as I get home and am now too scared to read any of them. (which sucks because one is called the doctor who lived in a house at sea- I love doctors and the sea!! But I cannot touch it) it's good that you made progress!!! Buying them for someone else was a good idea. And I'm glad that made it easier! And tbch I mostly just buy new books, but that's because I'm stupid. I do have an online library app that's wonderful but my old library card expired so I have to go to my local library and ask for a new one but I am scared :( so I just can't listen to audiobooks for free until I do that (or read the books)
I have no idea what kind of books you like but while I had Libby (my library app) I only listened to two and one was Wonderwoman War Bringér, which was honestly really interesting but I do chronically read YA so. And then a book called wild and wicked things that you might like? It's an adult book set after WW2 about witchcraft and lesbians.
I didn't like the Harley x birds comic just because everyone but Harley seemed incredibly out of character but I do really like the way her relationship with Dinah was essentially just Harley being like !!!!! And Dinah being 😮‍💨 about it the entire time. I want that back. (honestly it's somewhat similar on Injustice too and it's just like bring that back please). I also hope it gets better!!! If worse comes to worst I'll take over and write it myself I can do it. We deserve it.
That's fair!! Hope you enjoy it!!
(I only know so many "good time of day" in Gaelic so you have to be reading this at the time I say I don't make the rules, anyway) Madainn Mhath!!
akalsjg i'm so glad the site is working well for you! and that’s very fair re:big barda. and yeah! dr kimiyo hyoshi exists as dr light in the main continuity too!! according to wikipedia she was introduce during crisis on infinite earths & has even come face to face with the villian who goes by the name dr light.
also like i don’t really know much about working in marine biology but i gotta say from my own personal experience in working in a career related to smth im passionate about (i work in the dog world) definitely has serious drawbacks in that im hitting serious exhaustion and burnout and it feels like my passion itself is kinda burning out. so yeah gotta say totally respect not wanting to go into a career specific to the animal you love.
ajsjdjsjs i did mention bombshells!kara’s three moms (four actually if you count her earth adoptive mother) twice huh. the silliest part is when i mentioned it the second time i even remember. going back and checking if i had mentioned it previously but clearly i didn’t read my own words throughly enough, whoops lmao
yeah supergirl was originally a cbs show for s1 and then i forget the details but it switched over to the cw for s2. thats why supergirl was set on a different earth from the rest of the arrowverse (up until they changed that with their version of crisis on infinite earths and they decided no more multiverse, which really is no fucking fun i love a multiverse)
i haven’t read the new green arrow run but i think i may give it a try bc i do enjoy comics ollie (he’s VERY much preferred to arrow oliver in every possible way ((which is kinda like saying i prefer pizza over a moldy slice of bread))) and i have a friend who’s really into green arrow comics so it could give me smth to talk about with them too.
also yeah!! thrift stores are hard for me too. it took me a long time but i can buy clothes from thrift stores now because they can go directly in the washing machine but anything else is a pretty hard no. i hope this isnt weird to say but its nice to find solidarity/similarity in struggling w/used items.
i actually own a physical copy of wonder woman warbringer!!! i got it as a gift, and then my dog decided to rip the cover of it and made me very upset (he has now been assigned Wonder Woman Hater-he also ripped up some wonder woman stickers i got as a completely separate gift) but yeah i really enjoyed warbringer, wouldve loved it even more if they let alia be diana's love interest instead of that dude who i barely remember (maybe i should reread its been a long time) i will have to add wild and wicked things to my to read list! one of my friend groups just convinced me to start the raven cycle series so i ended up listening to that on my drive to my parents today, i havent formed a solid opinion on it yet but ive been intriuged/enjoying it so far!
you know i actually dont remember if i read the harley x bop run or not. i feel like i probably did but i have no memory of it. alas such is the way my memory works
okay i kinda liveblogged my reading of injustice a little bit which i will put below the cut for you, its a little scattered bc i read a lot in one sitting last night after work and then fell asleep (on the couch lmao) but ive definitely gotten invested in it. but i have to ask, does dinah not come back until injustice 2? (she comes back right? i feel like i definitely remember seeing panels out there of her and other earth ollie). anyways. yeah here are some of my thoughts i had, a bit scattered, i might attempt more coherent thoughts later but i wanted to finally respond to this ask <3
okay i finished year one of injustice and i am continuing to read as i write this reply. i have to say it is by no means my favorite comic series and its a bit frustrating at times however..... the dinah of it all.... yeah. i was also really loving the dinahollie of it all, i did... forget that ollie dies in injustice. didnt know superman literally beat him to death. killing martian manhunter and green arrow really isnt a good look for superman i gotta say.
the hardest thing with reading injustice so far has been the whole wonder woman aspect of it but ive simply chosen to decide that its not really diana. like idk who that is but that is Not My Wonder Woman <3 i simply know her better. it is nice to see some of the other heroes working with superman questioning things and beginning to have Doubts about what superman is doing. (i feel so bad for shazam who is literally a fucking child he should not have to be a part of these horrors.) and im curious to see what reactions will be if/when they find out superman killed ollie bc like, sure he had a justification for killing martian manhunter (he was trying to kill imposter wonder woman) but ollie was just vibing (he... put an arrow in papa kent but papa kent was fine about it! and that was after clark starting attacking ollie) now if i remember correctly injustice brings in like an alternate earth version of ollie? looking forward to when that happens i hate when dinah is sad.
and okay just got to ollie's funeral and damn even hal's staying on superman's side huh. homoerotic friendship means nothing to hal i see. (i dont actually know that much about hal but from my understanding he does have a homoerotic friendship with ollie and i support that)
okay i just got to the beginning of harley & dinahs friendship and oughghghghghghghghghhghghghghg i love them (i had seen pretty much the entire interaction between harley & dinah that i just read previously but it still was so good and wonderful)
okay so its been a minute since the last sentence (more than a minute) i got home from work and literally.... read all of year two and year three. its 1:30am rn and i really need to not start year four but ouugh. year two was very good for me as a dinah fan. year three not so much however year three did have zatanna and i do love zatanna. (coulda been more zatanna in my opinion)

The One Where Someone Ruins Katsuki Bakugo's Bubbly Girlfriend's Snowman, And They Must Pay.
Edited: 12-17-2020
Tumblr media
Katsuki Bakugo stared out the foggy window. The snow flew down lightly, much nicer now in comparison to the harsh flurries that had stormed down that morning, creating a free day for the UA staff, faculty, and students. The snow landed on your hair, making it shimmer and shine when the sun's glare hit it just right. It was ethereal. You were beautiful, a perfect distraction.
You had begged him to come out with you, but he refused. Midterms were coming up, Katsuki had to study, not go out and goof off with every extra in his class. Katsuki had a homework book out in front of him, a book he was supposed to be reading, instead, he was studying you. He knew if he went out instead of staying in he would be teased. He would get called soft and whipped. While Katsuki didn't mind that because he knew he could easily yell out a few cursers and threats and shut them up, he didn't feel like dealing with his friend's nosy attitude towards his relationship.
It was between you and him, not them.
Every laugh you let out could be heard, every string of giggles, every time you called someone's name. It infuriated him. Those extras didn't have the right to talk to his girlfriend. You were far too beautiful, far too nice, and good to be conversing with them. Your attention would have been better consumed with him. You should've stayed inside, you should be studying with him–he wouldn't have beat the knowledge inside you like he had done to Eijirou either. You would be been laughing with him, you could be drinking homemade hot chocolate, you could be sitting in his lap as he explained the math problem, semi-polite, and maybe, he might have even let you take a break to watch a Christmas movie.
With another giggle, Katsuki broke away from his math book to turn his gaze out the window. He was really angry now. Dumb Deku got it somewhere in his head he could make a snowman with you. He got it in his dumb little brain that he could try to make you laugh. He was even more infuriated as he saw you take your scarf off to dress the snowman. Your nose soon turned red, you'd get sick soon if you stayed out like that. An intrusive thought entered Katsuki, one worse than the angry and infuriated ones. This was a ploy made by Deku so he could give you his own scarf, that's exactly the kind of thing a shit-munch like Deku would do to try and woo what wasn't his. No way in fucking hell was Katsuki letting that happen.
Like everything Katsuki did, with a scowl on his face, he slammed his book closed and stomped his way over to the closet to grab his snow boots and jacket. Quickly, he zipped up his jacket and tied his boats before grabbing his hat. Now dressed in proper snow attire, he snagged his extra scarf to bring to you. The things he did for his dumbass.
He was fast to exit the building and faster to march up to you. He wrapped the scarf around your neck and double tied it. Practically choking you in the process, he wrapped it up and tucked it in your coat as a mother would.
"Dummy, you're gonna get sick by giving your scarf away. You're lucky you've got a nice boyfriend to bring you one of his own."
"The snowman needed it more than I did, right Deku?"
"Dumb-Deku better shut his fucking mouth before I blow it up!"
"Well, if it isn't my favorite idiot from class 1-A!"
Neito Monomas voice entered your ears and Katsuki could feel his day just getting worse. First, you left him for the extras, then you distracted him, now he had to deal with that Tuxedo Mask wannabe from class 1-B?
"The fuck did you say, kazoo kid?!"
"Nothing, I'm just saying..."
Maybe Neito would have let it go with just a petty comment, but Itsuka Kendo wasn't anywhere insight to hear and scold him, she really did keep him inline. Something about Katsuki just rubbed Neito the wrong way. Then again, everyone in class 1-A seemed to rub him the wrong way.
"I'm just saying, figures class 1-A's weak-link would spend her snow day making a snowman–an ugly one at that–rather than studying."
Katsuki tried to calm himself down as you grabbed onto his hand and shook your head back and forth as if to say he wasn't worth it. He wasn't worth it, he was just a waste of time. Katsuki came out here with a mission, give you his scarf, persuade you to come back inside with the promise of cuddles, and maybe even insult Deku along the way. He had a mission set in his mind, and he wasn't going to let the cosplayer ken doll get in his way.
Neito wasn't happy with that result. He liked getting a rise out of class 1-A. He liked getting them upset and worked up, especially Katsuki, who got worked up the most. What better way to get a rise than through his girlfriend? Neito kicked the snowman down, crumbling the snowman down to a pile of snow with a grin.
"Even her snowman is weak, just like her. Pathetic class 1-A loser."
"You wanna see weak? I'll show you weak!"
Neito simply wanted a reaction, he thought one of Katsuki's friends, like Mina, or the class representative, Tenya, would've stepped. As your eyes glossed over with tears your classmates stood back and let Katsuki go feral. With explosions surrounding him, Katsuki sent himself flying towards Neito with outstretched arms. Sending explosion after explosion, careful not to get touched by Neito. Neito, gave up fruitless, cowering back with each pound after pound, whimper after whimper. With his hand on the cuff of his jacket, Katsuki raised him and dragged him to you.
"Fucking apologize or DIE!."
"I-I'm sorry."
"Talk shit about her or her skills again and I'll make sure you can't speak again!"
He released Neito on the ground and he fell with a thud. The blonde boy scrambled to his feet and took off in the direction of the 1-B dorms. He turned to back at you and screamed.
"I'm only sorry your boyfriends a psychopath!"
"That little shit-"
"Katsuki, no."
You threw yourself on him and wrapped your arms around Katsuki, pulling yourselves together as a few stray tears leaked from your eyes. Katsuki scowled as his classmates watched him, intrigued on how their mean and rough classmate would handle comforting their sweet and soft classmate. Your relationship was such an enigma to them.
"The fuck are all of you staring at!?"
Everyone watching the fight disbursed as you pulled away from your boyfriend, red embarrassment on your cheeks, still you latched yourself onto Katsuki's arm. Tears were in your eyes as your attention went back over to your ruined snowman. You worked hard with Deku to make that, maybe you were the weak link.
"Do you think Monoma's right? Should I have stayed inside and studied?"
"Should you have stayed inside with me and had a study date, like I originally wanted? Yes. Should you have stayed inside because you're weak? Fuck, no. Fuck that class A wannabe."
"He was right, and he blew my snowman right over."
"You're such a crybaby. The only reason it got wrecked is because that dumb-dumb Deku helped you make it. Maybe if I had helped you it would have withstood better."
Katsuki placed a chaste kiss on your forehead before pushing down your hat which had begun to fall off. He pulled it over your ears as he clicked his tongue. You would be sick and lost without him, he did such a good job taking care of you.
"I suppose studying can wait. Besides, if we wait I can make shitty hair and dunce face study with us, I'll beat it in them."
Katsuki grabbed your hand and pulled you down into the snow with him. A rare smile graced his face as you giggled at him.
"I'll help you make another snowman, but you gotta do exactly what I say, and shitty Deku can't help."
"Okay, but you gotta make us hot chocolate after. Your hot chocolate always tastes the best."
"Fine. Someone's gotta make you something warm, and we both know you can't do it yourself."
With another kiss to your face, Katsuki felt content. He supposed he got what he really wanted. Whether it was studying or not, he had your attention. He got to insult Deku and he got his frustrations out. Maybe snow days weren't so bad.

Can you tell us your opinion on the new Rebecca? I have still yet to see it (I know the plot ofc) but as much as I was hoping for a good adaptation, I was fearing it was going to be poor (bc, well...Netflix...)
Hey there anon. Well I'm very opinionated so take this with a grain of salt and it's totally fine if people enjoy the movie (I like a lot of objectively "bad" movies too so I don't judge lol) or disagree with me. Don't want to fight, just saying my opinion. Spoiler warning for everyone who doesn't know the story.
First of all I want to start with something a bit less terrible but still something that bothered me: I think the overall mood of the movie is kinda... wrong. To be precise: there isn't really a mood. There is no sense of darkness or thrill or drama. I especially didn't like the costume design. The visuals are beautiful for sure. It wasn't terrible but it didn't make me feel something either.
Much more troubling to me: The narrator and Maxim were miscast in my opinion (the actors are fantastic! No hate for them, only for the casting director) or at least the roles are very poorly interpreted. They are sweet and lovely and nice and gorgeous. Which fits perfectly into what this 2020 adaption wants to be: a sexy, cutesy love story.
But it doesn't fit into the relationship from the book/other adaptions that should be more influenced by the narrators insecurities, class differences, the age difference (which doesn't exist in the movie btw) and her being "plain" (in comparison to the ever present Rebecca). Maxim really is a nice gentleman and so in love with the narrator from the beginning. There is no questioning it, no hesitation, no insecurity. The power dynamic between them is barely visible (if there is any) and all of that sets the entire movie into a whole other mood from the start. This movie wants to be a love story so bad.
And then there is my beloved Mrs Danvers (might get really subjective here). To make it short: a lot of gay coding got erased. I know this has been said by others on here before but HOW can a 2020 movie be less gay than a movie from the 1940s (and both were directed by straight men)? I already see new Rebecca/Mrs Danvers and narrator/Mrs Danvers fanfiction coming in and that's great. Yay Rebecca fandom, the director couldn't erase all of the gay vibes. But we could have had so much more! If it wasn't for the straight male director. I need to be *that* person and point that out because that's basically what this movie is: watching/reading Rebecca from the viewpoint of a straight dude who doesn't know nuance and doesn't care for the context of the piece of art he is interpreting. We could have had a movie that got a bit more daring, that dared to speak and show what could only be whispered for years and years.
Gay coding in old movies and books is such a passion of mine. The LGBT community has been so drawn to Rebecca since the book but mainly since Hitchcocks movie adaption and more so after the musical adaptions. My gay and lesbian friends alike consider it a "classic" and it's such a huge part of lesbian and gay culture/media. Daphne de Maurier was at the very least bisexual and already uncomfortable with being a woman at that time but even more so with being a woman that's attracted to other women. As someone struggling with internalized homophobia and misogyny myself I always felt like she was expressing these things (maybe subconsciously) in Rebecca and especially with Mrs Danvers.
I would have loved to see a movie with as much depth as the book, with all the nuance it had. But yes, I would have also loved something a bit more... gay. Something that would make a modern lesbian/wlw audience feel the same excitement and "oh is she...? Were they...?" that an earlier audience felt with the first movie. But instead it feels like the little subtext, the little gay coding we got was not even an after thought. In this movie it just feels like something that slipped in by just filming scenes from the book without giving it any thoughts or thinking about implications. There is no depth to it, no feeling, no implications.
Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs Danvers was amazing (yes I will reblog lots of gif sets because hot damn). I don't doubt any actors in this movie but she was actually great for the role she had. But Mrs Danvers almost felt out of place. Some people explained it better than I can but... When you don't understand important aspects of the story, the author, the societal norms of that time, the implications, the cultural meaning of du Maurier... Then you can't write or direct Mrs Danvers right. And that's what it felt like to me.
I don't like to compare old and new adaptions of books because a new take on something isn't automatically a bad take! I'm very open minded about media and I also enjoy a lot of "bad" movies or shows. But this wasn't just a different take. This was tone deaf, completely ignorant regarding historic and societal context and plain boring.
So yea my very personal opinion: the movie was boring. There are much more thrilling, exciting adaptions out there (not even mentioning the great source material itself) and this movie just felt unnecessary to me. I'm sorry this got so long and again: I don't want to attack anyone who liked the movie. (Especially if you are gay and will write fanfiction... Please enjoy the movie further so you can write more ff i can read lol).
This is just an expression of my disappointment.

Conversation
On Helena: #1
Context: I am playing Helena in a Vampire, the Masquerade game. Setting is Boston, Necropolis, 2015. Helena is mortal, currently a ghoul to another player character (Klaxon). The player characters are Klaxon (Nosferatu), Elyas (Tremere), Keri (Gangrel), Garreth (Gangrel). Our DM is Gore. Some of this conversation will be edited out as I have done this to focus on Helena and her character.
Garreth OOC: -points to Helena- baby
Alex: Helena agreed, but is also aware Garreth is also baby, so it's like the same feeling you have for the baby sitter that's two years older than you are.
***
Gore: Garreth and Klaxon have to make it out alive as they went into it. But y'all split the party on me so I can't gaurantee that.
Alex: Helena will probably come rushing back. I don't think she will move in just due to how complex her plant/heat lamp set up is.
Gore: She could leave them with her plant dealer, Gus?
Alex: She could but it's like leaving your cat with your best friend. You trust them but that's your baby, and you will worry constantly.
***
Alex: She wouldn't cope well with Klaxon having monster sex- she heard something about him fucking a demon, and having also SEEN Necropolis...so she looks at her dorm and values the quiet.
Gore: He can't bring them topside, so Helena's safe.
Alex: I don't think she knows that.... but I do think she'd miss him then.Oh my god is she the mum friend? I think she is! "AT WHAT TIME DO YOU CALL THIS?? YOU DIDN'T TEXT ME I WAS WORRIED?". Either way, she's still on the fence about her dorm and I can't push her any which way.
***
Gore: Has she heard stories about how brutal U.S cops are?
Alex: No, she's pretty shut in. She came to America for study and books, so thats EXACTLY what she's doing.
Gore: She's not aware of the political climate of it?
Alex: No, she's one of those 'I don't read the news'
Gore: Aight
Alex: I never really thought about it but I guess she is autistic. The 'outside' world doesn't really interest her on a larger scale. She's more about tasks and interests. The only reason I'M not like that is because of my flavour of anxiety being worried that I'm not a good person. I think Helena's is more about just interacting with people and her routines. She DOES love the World and humanity, but she's much more of a fan of nature because she's always found it hard to connect with people. This doesn't mean she's NASTY, she's nice to everyone and wouldn't hurt a fly - she just simply doesn't understand things like racism/homophobia on an emotional level. Historically though, of course she does.
***
Gore: What happens if one of her friends gets hurt?
Alex: She's never had that problem before really. The best example so far is with Patrick (NPC)when she was like OH GOD OH NO. Her first thoughts were practical though "I have to find him and give him first aid or whatever I can do". She has her panic attacks but like when Klaxon had his she throws it out the window and focuses on what needs to be done. She wants to be useful, she wants to help if she's needed in a people situation. Those situations are rare though, she's always been in her own little world, her parents hoped she'd get better with this but she's managed so far.
***
Gore: What if (helping) gets her into more trouble?
Alex: Hm. I think she takes things as it comes. If she was an element, she would be Earth. She's not selfish, she weathers the storm as best she can. THAT attitude has got her into trouble though, as she's still learning to be like "I need sleep" and "I don't want this.
***
Gore: Sometimes the Earth gets shaken. Would she take a direct attack to defend one of her new friends or have one of them defend her?
Alex: Hm, she would take a hit. She is vaguely aware people usually need to defend her, and feels bad about it. She's still never really had friends though, so this is new...AND in her mind she can always patch them up - even if that isn't strictly true.
***
Gore: How far can she go w/o realising she needs to patch herself up?
Alex: I mean she rushed out the door to help someone else at MIDNIGHT. For comparison, I would call the authorities and get some sleep since I would be useless sleep deprived. Helena doesn't even really put that as her first thought because she hasn't had anyone to really rely on (aside from her parents) so she feels like she has to do everything herself. She is Very respectful of authority figures but doesn't expect them to solve her problems, even with her parents, she realises in their old age she can't rely on them anymore. As a result, I think she'd go pretty far because she KNOWS the body and how it works. She will always think she can take a little more, but in reality she can't predict the impact and just how hard the next hit will be.
***
Gore: So if her legs are gone, she would still crawl to others to heal them?
Alex: Oh yeah, if she can move and has bandages. If not, she would at least move to be with them. Helena would be happy to go and then come straight back if Klaxon told her to and if she was given a use. Go there and come straight back we need to you to X for this thing.
***
Gore: You are a Brit in Boston in 2015 I gotta say that as well...
Alex: She's been fine at Uni
Gore: Up until now
Alex: It's only been a day for her, she doesn't get that yet. At Uni she does largely what she's told if given a clear reason.
Gore: Yeah but here's the thing about med school. It is highly competitive and people are always looking for excuses to flunk people out.
Alex: True. But she is VERY GOOD at what she does. I imagine that does annoy others but also it's hard to be mad at her because she's quiet about it as well as sweet, lovely and helpful to most people she meets. She knows her place with people in general, and it is at the bottom.
Gore: Some Boston people would say that you belong in the harbour with the tea
Alex: and she would clam up and walk on by.
***
Alex: Teachers like her because she's polite, studies hard and is VERY earnest in what she does. Helena making a mistake is rare, so when it happens, some shit is going down.
Gore: It sure will be
Alex: She's going to have to rush in and lie to teachers, she won't like that at ALL. Helena is a good girl but she ain't saying shit about Necropolis. She doesn't fully understand why, but she feels it in her heart to shut up.
Gore: Why?
Alex: Klaxon said they've (kindred) been around forever and have functioned this way. The heart doesn't know the lungs exist but functions anyway, yet NEEDS those lungs. She isn't loyal to humanity like that, her interest lies in medicine and they (kindred) don't seem malicious, from what she's seen.
***
Gore: Wouldn't it be a great medical advancement to study those undead and cryptids?
Alex: Yeah, but not on a huge scale. She knows about medicinal cruelty. How many have been mutilated or hurt in the name of study? With the world as it is now, no. Sure, an ideal world in Helena's mind would be all species working and living together but she KNOWS that isn't going to happen.So she will study by herself, and she's fine with that.
***
Gore: If embraced, would she study herself
Alex: Yeah, absolutely.
Gore: To what degree?
Alex: Not to like 'remove arm' degree, she would do it as needed. Like when they test new skincare on humans "I put this swatch on to see how it works". Blood samples, skin samples, bone study - she would see if she could get books on anatomy for surgery and healing.
***
Alex: The idea of studying forever appeals to her, but the passage of time scares her. She's not ready to be a vampire but she might be if she lost all her connections on the outside. I don't think it would be healthy for her though.
The joy of a mortal life is that you (hopefully) realise eventually that you have to self actualise or you WILL DIE and things will be WRONG.
Gore: What value is your own health when there's injured people?
Alex: Exactly. But I don't think she'd be her own person, she'd dedicate her life to a cause.
***
Alex: She's still developing as a person
Gore: You can develop as a kindred, it happens.
Alex: I think she thinks she might get there (being a kindred) but not at the drop of a hat.
Gore: Funny thing about death, you aren't always ready for it.
Alex: I know that, and she knows that a little. But Klaxon said she could choose, and she would like to. When it comes to big decisions I think she's slow and deliberate, like a plant. She really doesn't like change all that much.
***
Gore: You can't trust those Tremere, they can and will sell you out or use you for a ritual.
Alex: She won't see it like that, she is individual by individual. Like with her plants. HER Aloe Vera is not like any other aloe vera if you look on a deeper level, which she does.
***
Gore: She wanted to be a war medic right, has she done any internships at that level?
Alex: Not yet. She wanted to do her degree first for the skills, learn as much as she could by the boos because it's not something you can or should wing.
***
Gore: Would she squee if she met a moss or grass person?
Alex: Probably. Absolutely. Maybe quietly. She would probably love to learn to help them if they get sick. In retirement I can see her as being the best GP ever. The nurse that gives you breathing room if you have needle anxiety. The doctor that believes you and gives you a refferal. She is GOOD and I love her.

QfG Rants and Remakes part 5
Big thanks to both @agathasarmy and @yarasquad for sharing their ideas with me and believing that I could actually make a coherent rant without being too swallowed up by my emotions and hopefully I'll be able to do the same here.
P.S. Imma change the title of the next Rants and Remakes cause it's definitely not focusing on QfG anymore and it's gonna focus of AWWP so yeah...there's that to look forward too.
Chaddick & Yara + Tagatha interlude
Note: This post was originally gonna be titled "Chaddick & Yara + Mourning the Departed" and would have turned out as how it is explained below but as I was writing about Chaddick I realized that I needed to talk about something concerning Tagatha and realized that this post would have been too long for all three so I gonna move the "Mourning of Departed" in its own post. Hope you guys understand. Tagatha has a strong pull with me.
Imma actually gonna outline this cause I need to organize my thoughts and at least with this I could remember the direction that I would be heading.
First part's definitely going to talk about how Chaddick and Yara's death is bs
Then imma explain why them staying alive would have impacted the TCY storyline a lot more meaningfully (p.s. this is where the Tagatha interlude will be found)
And last (and this has been moved to its own post so stay tuned for it), I would also like to nitpick Soman's obvious lack of thought when it comes to the characters that have departed (mainly Callis and Lady Lesso and August Sader) and how it should have affected the characters (mainly Sophie and Agatha)
How Chaddick and Yara could have helped the storyline better
WARNING: I realized while writing this that I kinda made Chaddick and Yara more flawed than they are writen because I have to think about their character growth and they can't have that without having any flaws. So expect some more drama with these two than needed as I share my thoughts on how their characters could have went. They get better in the end believe me.
So I think that everyone in the fandom is one with the idea that Chaddick's death was one of the MOST worst decisions that Soman made.
As @agathasarmy said it once, Chaddick's death is more frustrating than sad because of how out of nowhere it is.
Via @agathasarmy:
but… Chaddick??? dying??? IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SERIES????
IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE, AND THE ONLY WAY IT MAKE SENSE IS COS SOMAN OBVIOUSLY DID IT TO INTRODUCE RHIAN AND THATS THE SHITTIEST THING ABOUT IT
HE REDUCED CHADDICK’S DEATH AS A PLOT DOOR WITHOUT PROPERLY SUBSTANTIATING CHADDICK’S CHARACTER FIRST SO INSTEAD OF US TRULY MOURNING HIS LIFE WE’RE JUST LEFT WITH THIS HOLLOW FEELING OF WHAT HE COULD’VE BEEN AS AN INTEGRAL CHARACTER TO THE PLOT
THIS
Chaddick's death felt hollow because it was a PLOT DEVICE. It didn't (or at least Soman didn't) conscider Chaddick much of a character but a means and once this happens some deaths can be very very hollow.
Like his POV chapter was very hard to read all because especially once you find out that he's dead by the end of it (SHAME SOMAN, SHAME) because his story and plot had so much potential. We weren't able to properly feel sad about his lost because we didn't get to know him better.
It just feels tragic. So much potential lost, all because Soman wanted Tedros to feel vulnerable because he lost his close friend.
WHICH SOMAN DIDN'T REALLY NEED TO DO
I explained already why this is bull and I'm gonna explain later what could have happened for Chaddick's character.
But in summary on why Soman didn't need to do it: EXPECTATIONS
Chaddick and Tedros would have been stressed out with all the expectations and comparison with Arthur and Lancelot. One wrong move could have broke them apart easily.
But Soman could have also not wanted to deal with Chaddick against his Sophie obssession so there could be that too.
SHAME SOMAN
Now, Yara.
Our little Soft Girl
She should not have died.
She really shouldn't have
W h y ?
Because her being alive would have impacted the story more than her death ever did. Just like Chaddick.
And if the problem was what she could have affected in the storyline in TLEA, then she could have been on the sides like. . . as Tristan from time to time or something.
Her being alive would have not affected or change TLEA at all. Like if more important characters like the Coven and the League can fade into the background then so could she.
But I really don't imagine her being in the school for New Evil with Aric as Dean. No, maybe Yuba could have hidden her with the League and she could have accompanied Princess Uma when they were getting Tedros and Agatha and then accompanied the Leuge or something.
Really it would have been that simple. C'mon.
Plus Kiko has been reduced to wreck after that. At least, with Yara being alive she could have fixed herself a bit more.
Okay
So in summary again: CHADDICK AND YARA SHOULD NOT HAVE DIED AND SHAME ON SOMAN FOR KILLING THEM OFF
Now, let's get to the juicier part, what could these two have contributed to the TCY storyline.
On Chaddick
It's pretty obvious what Chaddick's role should have been. He should have been important to the plot because his role would have been about breaking the comparison between the Past and the Present (see Soman, it could have been integrated into your canon plot) between him, Tedros, and Agatha to Lancelot, Arthur, and Gwen.
I'm pretty sure that Camelot has its eyes on these three.
It's pretty freaking convenient that they all have a predecessor to be compared to. And I'm pretty sure that it's not just Camelot who notices the pattern. I mean the whole freaking Woods read about this affair.
So Chaddick, along with Tedros and Agatha, should have been the ones that break this chain. It could have symbolized that Camelot was entering into a new, better era after a similar relationship broke it.
Like, a King, his beloved Queen and his most trusted Knight brought hope but ended in a Tragedy.
Now, another King, his beloved Queen and his most trusted Knight are skeptically judged for having the same pattern and they instead bring the Glory that first trio didn't
With Tedros, Agatha, and Chaddick united with each other bringing Camelot out of its traumatic experience with Tedros's parents, Camelot finally accepting that these three are not the same as Arthur, Gwen, and Lance and fully supporting them DESPITE the fear, would have been a much stronger message of that 'the past doesn't always repeat itself.'
Because with Rhian being known and most propably remembered as Tedros's most trusted Knight and betraying him in the end, it's like a copy of what Lance technically did to Arthur.
It just further proved that Camelot's King would always be betrayed by the ones they trust most.
Sadly for Arthur, he was betrayed by both Gwen and Lance and they left him alone.
While Tedros still has Agatha but without Chaddick the lesson simply is not learned.
Chaddick was integral to this formula because Camelot would have had to face yet another propable tragedy for their beloved King in the hands of the people he loves. With Tedros, Agatha, and Chaddick, complete, proving that they could do better despite having just a strong a bond as what Arthur and co had and Camelot accepting and trsuting this, the previous wounds would be replaced with new Hope.
Because even if that whole affair happened and ruined the Kingdom, at least they have proof that it's not always gonna happen that way.
And that's why Rhian being remembered as Tedros's Knight hurts this idea. Cause he betrayed him too.
Anyway, hopefully I made my point with this legacy thing.
Plus Chaddick and Arthur's Round Table training him. WHY SOMAN WHY?!?!?!
And now, imma explain what I think should have happened with Chaddick and how his character development and his role should have played out.
Because Chaddick is a pretty well rounded character, his POV chapter proves that he's brave, and is willing to die for his friends and what's right, and there isn't really much flaws to him aside from that he can sometimes make the most worst decisions despite being pretty wise.
I honestly cannot tell if he is stupid sometimes or Soman just does this to him cause PLOT.
Fandom I need help with this. Give me some opinions.
Like. . . he's wise enough to know what was right, examples being warning Tedros about Sophie and the first to listen to Agatha in AWWP, but also dumb or ignorant enough to bully Agatha in Book 1 and that VERY IMPORTANT THING ABOUT completely ABUSING Tedros is AWWP.
Like I'm kinda confused with him.
Well maybe we can say that he's a bit ignorant and maybe was raised with privilege so that's why he bullied Agatha in Book 1 and kinda wisened up in Book 2 about her.
But I am not excusing his attitude towards Tedros in AWWP because that was messed up. Well, AWWP was messed up so there is that but if we have to acknowledge that mess and have some closure then I vote for it to come from Chaddick and Yara.
Like maybe the reason why Chaddick is more wise now is because of that very experience. Maybe he could still be a bit guilty about it and that kinda messes with his mind cause he still thinks that Tedros is still the same boy those years ago in their second year and Rhian uses this to his advantage.
Actually, thinking about it this makes so much sense.
Like instead of AGATHA having the trust issues (thought I wouldn't completely vanish it, just not at the same level as she does in canon) it's CHADDICK that has them. Cause he's always kinda gets haunted by what happened in AWWP.
I mean Tedros replaced him with ARIC of all people when he failed to retrieve Agatha. There has to be some animosity between them since. I can imagine that Chaddick kinda felt like him and Tedros could never be as close as when they were during their first year. And he would totally understand it if Tedros never really forgave him for what happened and was at peace with it even if he didn't have enough guts to find a closure for it. He'd respect his friend first and foremost.
But then comes Tedros, all fine and inviting him to be his Knight like that would mess Chaddick up.
He propably couldn't believe it at first and maybe even kindly refused the offer at first but then he sees the heart break in Tedros's face and Chaddick realizes that Tedros really wanted this.
Tedros still sees Chaddick as his closest friend despite what happened in AWWP. And maybe after some thinking, Chaddick realizes that he still wants to have the bond with Tedros like what they had in Book 1. So he accepts.
But of course, they've changed and Chaddick still gets eaten by guilt because I think that he's the kind of person that knows that he did something wrong and wants to repent for it.
So instead of that wise friend that Tedros had in Book 1, Chaddick can't trust his judgement about Tedros because he's scared he'd go too far. So he kinda just agrees to Tedros's ideas and doesn't really give advice. Tedros kinda notices this and tries to talk to Chaddick about it but Chaddick would be all formal to him. Tedros, I don't really know, would think that it would be for his sake with the comparison with Arthur and Lance and all. So he kinda just goes along with it.
It's messy right now guys, I know, I'm kinda butchering Chaddick's character here but I promise it gets better and in my mind he'd be like this for only Book 4. He'd be Wise Chaddick again right after. Just give me a chance to explain.
So they have this kind of miscommunication thing that Canon Tagatha had in QfG instead and that would have made so much more sense and here's why;
Warning: this is officially where the Tagatha interlude starts so if you wanna skip it (why though???) find the sign that states it's the end. It's gonna be in pink too.
The fact that Tagatha was having a miscommunication failure was kinda off with me because 1) they've been over this in AWWP and TLEA. In TLEA Tedros has absolutely no problem with pushing Agatha to share more when she wouldn't and 2) he could easily read her like a book, especially when it counts. Like he could get her favorite food wrong but he always seemed to know what Agatha was having trouble with and was there to help her out and is not afraid to call her out on it (i.e. the Cinderella thing, he was on point there)
Imma provide some examples of Tedros totally getting Agatha when it counts;
Tumblr media
AND THIS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THIS TOO
Tumblr media
WAIT THERE IS MORE (The Tagatha Moment)
Tumblr media
AND LET US NOT FORGET
Tumblr media
THIS IS WHY TLEA TAGATHA WILL ALWAYS BE BEST TAGATHA.
I get that Agatha's insecure about herself and maybe she was kinda influenced with the Excalibur thing (but I highly doubt it though) but it's no reason for her to get to the conclusion she did at the end of QfG.
I mean girl, you were always thinking that Tedros would be a Great King in TLEA and that's why you've been so insecure about yourself. WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT???
Someone call me out on this PLEASE. I'm hurting myself by judging her too hard.
I can imagine that she would be sceptical with Tedros's ideas and kinda doubting him about it (you guys have no idea how much it hurts typing this) but I can also imagine that she would never doubt that Tedros's heart is in the right place even if she thinks that the way he gets there isn't always the best.
Like we have literal proof that Tedros gets Agatha almost like Sophie does and the best thing is that I'm sure that Tedros would think of the best in mind.
The mess in QfG makes no sense because they should be over this miscommunication bs and it should not have been a thing.
And if it was because of the stress with Excalibur and his responsibilities as King that made Tedros suddenly not get Agatha then WTF Soman!?!?!? I did not ask for this. They were literally about to die in TLEA and yet they could still joke and tease each other and have these cute little scenes with the other.
Instead I got Rhian's b*tch ass being Tedros's therapists when he knows sh*t about this boy and Agatha doubting Tedros like he did something horrible. (Well he did for trusting Rhian but i digress)
I could have had more of these cute Tagatha scenes instead. Like, is it too much to ask for these two to just show their love for each other in other ways than "I will save you" and "You're the best thing ever and I don't want to lose you for this horrible thing that I did or say" like give me small softer moments anytime.
Tedros gently teasing Agatha when she's being difficult and Agatha being totally trying not to show that she's smitten over it.
Agatha trying to be romantic at the most outrageous moments and Tedros being like "?????" but totally finding it cute.
Other character just not getting these two when they do and they are just as confused.
These are the kind of scenes I wanted from them. And if I have to use Chaddick to get it then so be it. (I'm sorry about this, I'm mostly projecting at this point and these really affecting my personal opinions on this matter but I'll try to tone it down a bit so that it's still coherent)
Note: this is the official end of the Tagatha interlude but i'm not keeping any promises that it'll be the last
Anyways, Chaddick and Tedros, they have more reasons with having communication problems because;
They have not been together for a very long time and they've both propably changed since
AWWP. So far, the two of them have had horrible experiences as the last thing that they remember about each other.
As I explained, I headcanon that Chaddick has a somewhat formed a sort of PSTD with it and is very scared that he's gonna mess it up.
I'm not even going to try to explain the PSTD thing cause I feel like I'm not gonna do it justice but I hope you get what I mean.
Chaddick must have become more unsure of himself after AWWP and he must still be trying to fit this new Tedros with the old one that he used to hang out with in Book 1. It would have been a good comparison to show that Tedros has indeed change and grown since then.
Like Chaddick kinda feels like he needs to intervene when Tedros shares a very outrageous suggestion but doesn't know how and kinda ends up in a mess.
Basically imagine Tagatha's problems in QfG and apply to Tedros and Chaddick instead.
And Chaddick would have been suspiscious about Rhian from the beginning. He's a smart savy guy afterall.
So Rhian kinda exploits this and gets the two boys against each other. Because say that Tedros and Chaddick have this big fight propably like the one when Agatha comments that Tedros was being a horrible king but Chaddick's the one that said it instead. Say that this happens around the middle of the Book and it's the final straw between them because they haven't been properly communicating and all the pressure on them. Rhian could easily worm his way to Tedros's side and replace Chaddick nicely. Cause unlile Chaddick, Rhian would make Tedros believe that HE'S the one that believes in him the most.
So they kinda fall apart and Chaddick and Tedros are trying to understand where it all went wrong.
Agatha would try to understand each side and get them to better terms again but she can't do it alone plus a-hole Rhian is butting in.
I imagine that, for me, the logical person that Chaddick might approach on his dilema with Tedros might be Ravan.
Cause the two of them basically think the same way and are usually calm and wise. The only difference would be that Chaddick's more active while Ravan's more passive and choses to observe before making a move. So he calms Chaddick down when he's being too impatient.
Chaddick and Agatha would be talking of course. And I don't know why but I imagine that they're more numb to all the gossip about the three of them especially around each other because they're both sort of level headed and wise then when they're with Tedros individually.
And I imagine this is where the Tagatha drama happens. Only after Rhian cause I wanna be clear that without him, Tagatha would have been fine. He also tries to break them up by saying that Agatha sides with Chaddick and that she doesn't have much faith in Tedros too.
Agatha's going to deny this of course (because it's all bs from Rhian) but Tedros has been too stressed and vulnerable that he sorta starts to believe it and Agatha gets frustrated that Tedros is choosing to believe Rhian when she's known him longer and after everything that they've been through.
But Tedros isn't fully under Rhian's spell. I would have put several times when they would doubt each other especially when Rhian talks crap about Agatha and Chaddick and it would be beserk button for Tedros so Rhian doesn't really go there.
Now Chaddick would be having his little personal battle with himself and Ravan and Agatha would be there to support him and give some advice.
The real kicker would have been when Rhian is adored by Camelot as Tedros's Treasured Knight, someone better than Lancelot and Chaddick kinda has a heartbreaking moment because HE'S supposed to be the one that was known as Tedros's Treasured Knight not this stranger. Not this stranger that stole everything from him especially his best friend.
Agatha hears about this and reflects the time when she gave up her own position as Tedros's queen in TLEA and remembers that Tedros knows her and all her monsters and has been the light to help her fight them.
So she and Chaddick have this talk and she tries to concinve him that Tedros wouldn't want for Chaddick to just give up on him like that. Chaddick thinks about it but is still not completely convinced but Agatha reminds him that Tedros CHOOSE HIM to be his Knight and Liege and they both have to fight for it.
It's Ravan who finally manages to get Chaddick to gear when he asks Chaddick if he's going to regret anything he should choose to either regret letting Tedros go and not fighting for their friendship or make a complete idiot of himself but fight for their friendship instead.
So Chaddick does the latter but everything is too late and the Rhian thing happens as I explained in the first Rants and Remakes post and Chaddick gets tossed into jail with Tedros.
It's in book 5 that I imagine their relationship actually starts to heal itself and they both try to get through everything. I haven't thought of all the kinks out yet but I imagine a lot of fights and Chaddick just kinda shouting what he thinks before he startsvthe regret it and Tedros being this physic and just getting Chaddick too like how he does Agatha.
Again, I haven't thought of everything yet but I'll share it when I do
Now let's move on to Yara
On Yara
Yara would have been more influencial alive then dead and I already explained why how she could have been handled in TLEA cause where I really see exploiting her is in the storyline of TCY.
With the Balance vs Chaos in mind as well as the Lady of the Lake villainess plotline, Yara could have been the answer to this.
She'd be a living reminder of everything that all the characters went through in AWWP and how horribly toxic it is to everyone. Especially those like Yara who lives in the between.
Like with the Lady plotline she would have promoted ultimate purity for both Good and Evil and doesn't believe that each side could be able to understand each other so she thinks that she's promoting Balance that way and that letting each side corrupt the other is Chaos.
She would have believed that Yara is an abomination to the Balance because she is the embodiment of the idea that you can choose some charcteristic from two sides and still be yourself.
Plus with Yara alive the other characters would be forced to rethink their ideals and how to approach this new possibility and reflect on the old ways that have been hurting the ones that are similar to her.
I imagine that Yara's gonna have an internal struggle with this like she's still trying to understand it herself and as she tries to understand it the more that the other characters do as well.
I haven't actually thought out her actual detailed storyline just yet and even though I wanna say more I know that I might butcher her character as I go on but I definitely know her importance to the possible story.
As I explained before, if in TSY was Good VS Evil and that the TCY was about Good AND Evil and how both sides need each other to grow and develop and that the importance of the School still teaching Good and Evil in its most purest form is so that they'd all have a guideline to go by but the curriculum has become more flexible with their beliefs OF Good and Evil and that every student just have shades of grey but choses to go by these either of the two and can still be a Hero or a Villain then Yara could have been the right person to show that it doesn't matter if your not completely on one side and was given the characteristics of the other, it matters what values you choose to follow despite it and how tou choose to use it to help everyone else for the better.
Cause it's canon already that it doesn't matter what they are, it's what they do that counts.
NGL I'm not completely satisfied with how I explained Chaddick and Yara I feel like I didn't do them justice here and I will definitely get back to this when I have organized and fleshed out my thoughts on them
Anyways, if you guys would like to add your own thoughts to this post pls do.

Can't believe your getting hatemail for writing dark fics, as if DM isn't already a dark story. Addy and Beth are not girlfriends made of sugar and spice and everything nice, and they don't spend their time having cuddle wuddles and feeding each other cupcakes. Colette, love her or hate her, is a huge part of the story so ofc she's going to be in fic. Anyway, I love your writing. You keep doing you, ignore the haters.
Oh jeez, I hope my post didn’t make you guys think I’m getting a ton of hate. It’s not a lot, really. Most of the messages I get are prompts, or questions about the book, or nice messages like the last sweet nonny sent.
I can count on one hand the insulting messages I got. It was just that I didn’t feel like responding to them individually, so I posted the one sarcastic gif instead. And it honestly doesn’t bother me! Like, I’m in my early 20s and I been in fandom spaces since my preteen years. I am familiar with fandom hate. I don’t get offended, maybe just a little annoyed.
I actually think it’s totally cool if you want to read about Addy and Beth being sugary, nice girlfriends and eating cupcakes! I actually see the appeal in it because Dare Me is dark and some folks want light content to decompress and lift their spirits, and whatnot. But if that’s the content you’re looking for and instead you click on the fic that has explicit tags and warnings that say it contains the exact opposite, and then you want to complain about it?? LMAO, that’s when you’re just looking for reasons to be pissed. It’s literally as simple as scrolling past or hitting the back button.
As for Colette, like yeah, you’re right, she is a huge part of the story so it does naturally lead one to conclude she’ll probably pop up in a fair amount of fic. Maybe more so in mine, because as I’ve admitted before, I kinda relate to Addy having a Colette type in her life and maybe I’m even projecting a bit.
I am very much one of those people who believes your fandom experience is whatever you make it. I don’t like discourse, so I avoid it. I don’t want that to be part of my experience. I do like shit posts, so I seek them out. I want that to be part of my experience. I also like exploring dark content, so I clickity-clack away to explore it.
I think of fandom as a whole, and fanfic included, as a playground or a sandbox. I did not invent those comparisons, but I’ve seem them before and I think there’s a lot of value in them. Cause you play on the equipment you want to play on, and you bring the toys you want into the sandbox.
Do you interpret Addy as a heterosexual who’s so fascinated by Colette because she’s secretly pining for Will and wants him for herself?
I don’t, but you’re totes within your right to go write it. I’m not interested in that, I’d never click it. I especially would never read it and then barge into your inbox telling you you’re a horrible person because you wrote it.
Do you think cheerleading is boring? Would you rather the story revolve around softball instead? Go forth and make that softball AU! Then they’d be Batty Baddy, am I right? Ba dum tss.
You know what might be neat? If Addy and Beth reunite when they’re in their 70s, and space stations are now offering civilians trips to the moon. So Baddy goes to space and get married as old women in the middle of a fucking moon crater.
Sounds wild? Fanfic can be wild cause it’s literally whatever you make it. Your fandom experience can be whatever you make it too.
I think I’m gonna go ahead and write a Stella/Beth crossover fic, because the idea’s in my brain now and it sounds neat. I’m the only one who wants that, I’m the only one who’s gonna read that, but I don’t care, because it sounds fun!
I’m here to have fun! Not to fight with other people over different interpretations of a TV show. Not to please the anons who call me names because I explore dark things.
Sorry that this turned into some rambling rant that lost its direction a little bit, but I appreciate your support. I am not receiving a lot of hate and the little bit I am receiving is kinda annoying, sure, but it’s not new. Fandom just be like that sometimes. I’m grateful that you went out of your way to send me support, but I want you and the other nice nonnys who send good vibes to know hate mail doesn’t really bother me.
I hope you guys go out and cleave whatever it is you want from your fandom experience, explore what you want to, avoid what you don’t, and at the end of the day, enjoy yourselves. Because that should be what’s most important.

DuckTales 2017 – “Friendship Hates Magic!”
Tumblr media
Story by: Francisco Angones, Madison Bateman, Colleen Evanson, Christian Magalhaes, Bob Snow, Rachel Vine
Written by: Rachel Vine
Storyboard by: Stephanie Gonzaga, Victoria Harris, Vaughn Tada, Brandon Warren
Directed by: Matthew Humphreys
No ponies here, headless or otherwise.
While we've seen a conclusion of at least one part of the Della plot, one other little thing from the season finale hasn't really been elaborated on outside of the occasional mention of Magica De Spell. Specifically: while we know whatever happened to Della Duck, and have a clue on whatever happened to Donald Duck, we never really found out whatever happened to Lena since she became Webby's shadow. Needless to say, it's a long story.
This is the episode where that plot continues. I will say this: Lena plots don't have good track records with me. I liked Jaw$, and The Shadow War was great, too, which was pretty much a foregone conclusion since it was the season finale. However, there's also Terror of the Terra-Firmians and The Other Bin of Scrooge McDuck, two episodes I almost gave a Disgusted Donald to. Granted, neither are because of Lena in particular, but still. Which column will this episode fall in? We're about to find out.
Tumblr media
Our episode begins with Webby going to the library, because she loves the smell of thinking in the morning. Gotta get that reference out of the way. Oh, and Lena is here now, as an invisible, unhearable shadow being. While nobody else can see or hear her, the audience sees her as this black and green version of herself. Lena says that she's fine with her current situation, though it's quite clear from the tone of her voice that it's more in comparison to any alternative.
Webby doesn't want to do that even if she could hear Lena, so she's continuing her impossible mission to find a book at the library that can teach her about the shadow realm. Yami Yugi is nowhere to be seen, but we do get Mrs. Quackfaster. I guess Scrooge isn't paying her enough so she has to double as the amount of libraries she works at to get that sweet retirement at Birdaydos. Er, Bird-baaaaaay-dos. She tells her that she can't offer the particular book she's looking for.
Tumblr media
It's because this new character already checked it out. Webby is shocked, because this book is only in Ancient Syriac, but this "odd girl" happens to know a lot of ancient languages. She introduces herself as Violet Sabrewing, and, after bonding over knowing conversational Akkadian, she offers to stay at her place, possibly overnight. In other words, and eventually Webby's: a sleepover.
Webby, of course, accepts, but Lena does not.  It's almost as if she's read Disney Now's description of this episode, which refers to her as this "suspicious new friend". Then again, it may be because of the way Webby's last sleepovers ended. She wouldn't be the only one to remind her of this.
Tumblr media
As Mrs. Beakley gives us the excuse for why we're not going to see Scrooge or the boys in this episode, they're busy in the office for Bin-ventory Day, Webby barges in and tells her grandmother she's having a friend come over for a sleepover. Mrs. Beakley is proud that her granddaughter wants to do another sleepover after the last two ended with money sharks and unicorn fights in the other bin. Gotta love those casual previous episode references that could still work as fantastic off-screen adventures to those who don't know.
Lena is excited that Mrs. Beakley could talk her out of this, and tries to jinx Webby again by saying "cancel the sleepover." Needless to say, that jinx doesn't work out like the library one, as Webby has a different idea.
Tumblr media
Instead, Webby decides to have the most normal sleepover ever, as she tries to hide everything that is supernatural in the house, and try to just be normal. Mrs. Beakley attempts to say that the best way to make a good impression on her new friend is to be herself
Mrs. Beakley: ...barring from that summer undercover in Paraguay.
Webby brushing aside what is most likely the origin story for one of her parents, hey, we were all thinking it, she tells her Granny that she's not like her, because she needs friends. After Webby walks away, she tells her to name one person she doesn't get along with.
Tumblr media
Enter Launchpad McQuack, inept pilot and ruiner of any plan to make this the first DuckTales episode with only female characters. To disprove Webby's accusation, she decides to invite him for a "sup", and spends a little more time than she wants explaining what she meant. Lena episodes sure seem to love the B-plots that, for the most part, never really seem to converge with the A-plot. This will be another one that fits with the "for the most part".
Going back to the other planned meeting, Webby is all done storing magic rocks in the attic, and her new friend has arrived for the normal slumber party for normal people. She tells Duckworth to get the door, and then realizes that ghost butlers don't help out at slumber parties. Surprisingly, that's not one of the Bailey School Kids books.
Tumblr media
After slicing Duckworth's ghostly form in half, him not appreciating it in the slightest, she opens the door to Violet and her totally normal pie. As Webby shows her awkwardness with this whole situation, Lena is not amused, saying she isn't buying it. See, I didn't pull that out of nowhere, Lena hates this girl. I mean, maybe it's a bit convenient that this girl happens to have the same shadow realm-related interests as Webby.
Violet is then brought to Webby's room, and Violet looks around to see all the places that clearly used to have mysterious objects in them. She just says it looks clean, but I can imagine she did not miss that.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Launchpad tries, and struggles, to drink pea soup from a straw. Mrs. Beakley tries her best to deal with this.
Tumblr media
One section she was focused on was this section about Tulpas, an actual concept in the world of mysticism. This whole concept sort of reminded her of that one time all the shadows came alive and...
Webby: Who wants Baggle?!
Violet actually does want Baggle, but wants this obvious distraction some other time. Webby responds that it's just her way to get to know each other a bit more, and suggests asking some ice-breakers. Violet's first icebreaker:
Violet: What do you know about Magica De Spell and the Shadow War?
Tumblr media
Lena, feeling completely vindicated, tries to tell Webby that she said the "M" word! I wouldn't say she forgot that nobody can hear her; she's like those people who yell at the characters while watching TV. Heh, nerds. Webby has a different "M" word in mind: makeovers! Violet is clearly not buying this at all, but goes along with the makeovers anyway.
Tumblr media
Violet ends up leaving her backpack behind, fully opened, and Lena notices something that definitely shouldn't be in there if she was an ordinary girl who just happened to really like shadow people: Magica's amulet! She runs off to try to warn Webby, and...okay, maybe she still thinks she can hear her, even though she never once acknowledged her existence. She does end up at least finding Webby, except she's now a zombie, complete with one of her eyes falling out.
Tumblr media
That fake-out turns out to be Violet and Webby's idea for a make-up session. Webby praises her best friend's make-up, saying that she looks just like the demon named Rakshasa. She's definitely a great friend, I don't know a lot of people who would take kindly to being told "you look like a demon!" Webby should know what Rakshasa looks like, because she met him in a previous adventure, and she has proof...that is definitely not in the attic. Oops.
Webby relents and lets her into the attic, as this cover was completely blown. She was obviously interested in these things, so she doesn't mind that Webby happened to have some magic rocks. They never really explain what those magic rocks are, and I'd like to think I am a little beyond the obvious joke there. She also notices some ectoplasmic energies from that friendship bracelet.
Tumblr media
The scene switches from their point of view to Lena's in a neat way, where Lena still thinks she can alter anything here. Sadly for her, Lena is also intangible. Thankfully for her, Webby distracts her from that bracelet, and offers that game of Baggle again. Violet agrees on one condition: they need to use Demogorgan runes. I don't want to reveal that I'm just looking up every one of these words on Wikipedia, so I'll be quiet.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Launchpad tries, and struggles, to color a coloring book, and then eventually tries to get Mrs. Beakley to get into Darkwing Duck. Mrs. Beakley tries her best to deal with this.
...okay, maybe I shouldn't just brush this off for this running gag, since this scene has quite a bit of lore to get into Jim Starling's eventual big role in The Duck Knight Returns...but maybe I'll wait for that one.
Tumblr media
Back to this game of runes, it just so happens that book has the right chant to make those dice-like runes glow green. Lena tries what might be her 50th attempt to actually affect anything as a intangible shadow person. She's shocked to find that it actually worked this time!
She then tries to rearrange the runes to spell out a message. Unfortunately, since these people are nerds, they think it's the writing on the runes that have any meaning, and not how this layout is shaped like the words "don't trust her." Not getting anywhere with these mysterious messages about rat messages, Violet tries another shadow spirit summoning trick: humming this melody. It works...but only Lena can see these white spirits ominously creeping out from the dark. She has to think of something.
Tumblr media
She tries to manipulate a white sheet in a form of a ghost. This actually works, because of ghost cliches that even Lena is aware of, but it doesn't solve the "they can't hear me" problem. Violet decides to use a weapon against the one evil spirit they can see, and it turns out this weapon happens to be Magica's amulet. One side effect is that this amulet allowed her to actually see and hear Lena for a second, which is enough to clue Webby in on what is really happening. However, that is only the second most of her worries.
Tumblr media
The main side effect is that it finally gets Webby to realize that maybe this girl may not be what she seems. Just like Lena wanted her to, she starts to question their future friendship, and asks everything she knows.
Tumblr media
It’s here that we finally get her backstory, or at least her claimed backstory. She was just an ordinary Muggle, having no interest in magic or anything else of the sort. Then, everything changed when the Shadow War happened, and. Oh, and she just stumbled across Magica's cane, which turned back into the amulet. That's pretty much it. We don't know if she's completely telling the truth...
Tumblr media
...but Webby buys it completely, to the disappointment of Lena, and they start to do a seance. You see these shadow beings that look like the shadow of Magica De Spell. This, of course, gets Lena to attempt to grab them again.
Tumblr media
I hate to spoil this, but I will say that this seance does lead to Lena being able to drag Webby and Violet into the shadow realm. No, not that one, thankfully. We get a big reunion, but this hug doesn't get to last long, as Webby and Violet finally get to see those white shadow ghosts.
That was spoiler enough, so I'll run through this: a big chase scene happens here, and it all leads to a good conclusion to this episode. Even the "tulpas" from the earlier scene comes up, as that turns out to be a little bit closer than one might guess from the opening of the scene. Here's a hint: they don't just stay in this Magica-like form.
Tumblr media
In a sort of fake-out transition from that mayhem, we see what is the conclusion to the Launchpad trying to get Mrs. Beakley into Darkwing Duck plot. Turns out, they both got really excited over a cliffhanger ending. Unfortunately, in this universe, that was how Darkwing Duck ended, with a Woody's Roundup-esque cliffhanger. I usually don't talk about future episodes, but this will be given more detail in The Duck Knight Returns.
What were those shadow beings? Will Lena ever learn to trust Webby's new friend? Should Lena ever learn to trust Webby's new friend? Most importantly, while we got the reunion, will it last? At least some of those questions will be answered by watching the episode. It was a treat to see one of those answers in the end, something I thought I wouldn't see until the end of this season.
How does it stack up?
This episode didn't give me anything to dislike, and a lot to like. The biggest challenge this episode had was introducing this new character. I'll say this, without spoiling anything: while she doesn't have any Earth-shattering twists like Lena did, yet, she has potential.
I kind of skipped over the Launchpad bits, I can admit they're all pretty funny. Obviously, it wasn't going to be something as big as the A-plot, but just something minor and maybe even a little bit cute.
In the end, it's definitely in the Jaw$ column.
Tumblr media
Next, I actually find a way to talk about The Powerpuff Girls...and not those ones!

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. A love letter to metroidvanias
Betcha thought I was gone.
Guess again, Cultists.
Tumblr media
From the faint sound of a piano in the background to the delicious plates of meat and apples hidden in the walls, Bloodstained just screamed Castlevania at me and I simply couldn't be more overjoyed. Just..UGHHNN man, this game scratched a certain itch that was lingering on the tailbone of a mildly neglected butt that is my Castlevania pants. And man this just DID it for me.
For starters. The graphics are absolutely stunning in most areas. From your roaring ships on the seas to your books flying from the walls. Nothing ever seemed out of place for its unique animation style. The only game I could really say it reminded me of was Castlevania: Symphony of the night.
Tumblr media
It has this gorgeous atmosphere to it of Victorian style that played throughout the game, throwing a twist to every trope it could find. Water areas, fire areas, gearpunk are- you get the shebang. It's a wonderful adventure...however, this could be seen as a bad thing.
Several rooms made me feel like I was just...*going through* them you know? As in there was simply absolutely no substance to it besides having it be a room for a mid-weak level enemy. This made it worse having to go back and farm enemies for certain items and drops...Looking at you Dragon Eggs and Beast Milk...though honestly, this gripe may just be due to my personal tastes. Though this can be easily avoided if you use Johannes the alchemist to destroy certain items for their components...but this is hella expensive.
Speaking of ememies!...um...Well yeah.
Bosses were cool! Well. Some bosses. Half of the bosses made me feel like I was just smashing the attack button and standing in one place while the better bossfights forced me to change my playstyle, spells, hell even my equipment. They did a great job with the bosses that interacted with my own placement, but did a poor job with bosses that could be beaten without even moving.
There are many enemies as well. Several I recognized. The walking grunts that walk at you viciously. The giant that does tons of damage but is easy to read and dodge, the smalll....ANNOYING ENEMIES THAT DO DAMAGE AND ARE IS NIGH EKEHRJ-
The enemies were nicely done. All with their own weaknesses and strengths according to the abilities and weapons you used. A small enemy could be dispatched quickly through a broad stroke of a great sword or a bigger enemy with armor pierced with a spear, ect. I don't have anything good or bad to say about the enemies because they just feel...*alright*. I mean there's just really nothing special to these enemies compared to enemies in other games. They were just there to be there..nothing wrong with that though. The only gripe I had was the lack of diversity in demons. They were just three different stages of the same demons I face in the beginning: Weak, mildly strong/strong, Giant. That tactic of making the player feel like they are progressing felt sort of cheap. A darker enemy of the same model isn't different enemy
What was far more important and interesting was the ABILITIES each monster gave you.
See, through the game, every monster you face has the chance of dropping a shard which bonds to your character's body, giving her several abilities. Ranging from fireballs, bats, and burning acid to shadows, increasing your strength, and more.
You may equip up to four regular spells called conjure shards
A passive shard which passively increases a stat or provides some benefit
A directional shard which allows you to point the spell with your hand via the joystick.
A manipulative shard that manipulates objects and spaces around you.
Skill shards, which gives you passive skills you can turn on and off. These are probably some of the most important shards in the game which are generally found after a boss fight.
My FAVORITE shard: Familiar shard! Allows you to have a familiar along the screen! My favorite being this cool little silver Knight that blocks projectiles c:
Each shard has their own circumstances to be used and best creatures to be used against which is great. Just the rediculous wide range of spells allows the player any range of choice and playstyle. My favorite is flooding the screen with bats. You may upgrade.
Weapons and armor are always in supply. Some found in secret areas while others are only unlocked via finding recipes for the alchemist to make. All have their own merits with some holding special skills you can use on monsters (example: a specific spear or set of spears allows you to sprint forward at rediculous speed). Sometimes I felt like I wasn't doing any damage before realizing I had to move on to the next weapon tier. Sometimes this can workout poorly for games since the progression relies on how well you do damage instead of how skillful you are with how you use your weapon, but I didn't seem to mind at all of Bloodstained's usage of the tiered weapon system.
Now, with over 100 of spell choices and weapons to use against a wide variety of enemies, it can be a hassle to constantly switch between spells and weapons in the menu...which is why the game introduces the quick select wheel!..later...in the game...which was a huge issue for me personally.
The quick select wheel came a bit later in the game which was strange since I had quite the number of spells and weapons I had. A problem I saw immediately with it was that I had to actually unlock more quick select slots by finding them, hidden and scattered through the game. I think this was a poor choice due to how the game encourages the player to play with their setup yet constricts them by locking these slots that didn't need to be locked in the first place. Maybe it was to give more incentive to the player to experiment with their mobility, but I still don't enjoy it. They should have had all options unlocked.
So now that we have combat and art out of the way, I'll talk about the TOWN features.
As in other metroidvanias, we have a homebase like area which holds several quests and people of interest to talk to. A farmer which can be given seeds to grow crops, a nun which gives you fetch quests to find items in the field to say goodbye to the fallen, an older woman whos hunger knows no bounds. Another nun who is a merchant for you and will also buy your leftover shards, and a fellow alchemist who will transmute items into weapons, armor, and whip up a nice plate of food for permanent stat boosts.
The merchant Nun, or Dominique, will sell you potions, alchemy items, and ingredients. Generally these items are...fairly overpriced, but rightfully so so the player doesn't progress too easily. The prices never change too which makes her interactions pretty concrete. It was nice not having to farm for basic items for potions c: so thank you, Dominique.
Then we have Johannes, our resident alchemist which is where a lot of our time is going to be spent.
Johannes takes the items we find from monsters, and puts them to good use my transmutation. He's the man who helps us make our ultima keyblade!..well, stronger weapon. This can be a tad annoying as some enemies take quite some time to farm, but it wasn't a hassle as I could teleport to the room and kill them until I got the item.. honestly this felt...a tad tedious? Then again, not a huge farming fan of repeat killing a monster, but it was needed to get some items.
Johannes also has an option to make you food from the ingredients you find from monsters! (Great idea to cook meat from demons) these meals give you permanent stat boosts after your first bite, but subsequent meals of the same food won't give you anymore bonus stats.
A special interaction is the ability to upgrade your shards! Using items from the monsters you kill (generally the same demon that gave you the shard), you can upgrade your shards to give them a new effect and make them stronger! The shards can be leveled to level 9 and are maxed out from there. This is one of my favorite parts of the game because how ridiculously numerous these spells are in effects. Hell, I can summon a dragon so he can just SMACK the screen like a fly swatter. Nothing makes you feel as powerful as watching a dragon head you summon just spew fire on a defenseless boss.
Now quests. These are...pretty underwhelming and are accomplished simply as you walk along to be honest. You'll finish these without even realize it because of how simple they were. These felt pretty weak in comparison to the rest of the game, but I mean hey, gave me some cool items. These could have been more fleshed out or maybe given the player some better quests that weren't just *fetch this*. Quests were the weakest part of the game.
Story was..uh...well. I'll be honest. My girlfriend even witnessed as I called the plottwists one by one and it was sort of sad. Don't play this game for the story. Truly don't. There isn't a good story here. The story is only here to drive the action and gameplay which is what the developers focused on. The game comes with multiple endings, the true ending being a tad cryptic to get to without knowing a certain secret of what to do with a weapon, but regardless, the story atleast made sense...has just been done before.
Now. Should you buy it?
If you're a fan of metroidvanias...I'd say the price is worth it. About 20-30 hours of gameplay for the avid metroidvania fan..I think (I'll start recording how long it takes me to really finish something hah)
If not a fan: wait for a sale. It's something great to have and pickup. With some gripes about quests and enemies while also having praises for the enhance system and spells, I enjoyed myself. I really did. It was fun. I put it down a couple of times because it was just too much with how large the map felt sometimes, but after getting the hang of mobility and the teleport system, it really felt like a castle to run around in.
-------------------METRIC-------------------
Pros:
• Spell system is EXCELLENT. I wish games had this many spells.
• Combat was nice with weaknesses and different strengths to each setup and creature.
• Map is widely varied.
• Artstyle felt like a callback to Castlevania as well as the music
• Long and worth the pricetag.
• Repayable
•Freakin familiars, man
• Decent amount of weapon choice (even if all do the same weapon attack as a weapon in their same category, each weapon felt like an upgrade.
CONS:
• Reskinned monsters are not good replacements for different monsters. Please don't do that...it feels cheap.
• Story was uninteresting
• The quickslot should be available from the very beginning so I can customize my character. It shouldn't have been a skill.
So that was my review on Bloodstained c: I really enjoyed it after getting used to the controls...also fun tip...USE the backdash. It helps so much in certain boss encounters where every action counts.
Have a nice Sunday, Cultists c:

I Am No Longer A Slave
Tumblr media
Did you know that the Bible calls up captives and slaves? A part of the Messiah’s mission included freeing the captives, according to Isaiah 61:1. Jesus read from this Book in Luke chapter 4:18-19. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” During His ministry, did He free them from the Romans? How can we all be captives? What makes us all blind? Why do we need to be set at liberty in the first place? These definitions imply we aren’t supposed to be here. These definitions are pointing out that this world is a prison. Are we captives? I am no longer a slave. Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts: According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts. – Haggai 2:3-9. What was this first house? Why does the LORD God say that He is the Beginning and the End? Why does it ask, “how do we see it now?” What is the Biblical meaning of a house or a temple? What are our bodies? When the Heavens and the earth shake, what will become of all of us? These are all questions that we need to find the answers to. The good thing is that the Bible provides the answers to life’s most difficult questions. We just need to know how and where to begin. It all begins in the Beginning. Are we slaves? Are we captives? I am no longer a slave. Top I Am no longer a slave Secrets at other moments I became pretty impatient to find out when these dim many years would conclude, And that i should once again be an iron pan, and placed on bricks.
