💖 My proposal for the stag, tomcat and doe bisexual flags 💖
At the request of an anon, and with help from a tomcat and stag bisexual (with myself identifying as a doe), I have worked to create some designs for the sapphic bisexual identifiers of “stag,” “tomcat,” and “doe.” These terms are for bisexual sapphics who embody queer masculinity, androgyny and femininity respectively!
The meanings of the flags can be seen in the images, and in the alt text!
These are all free to use! Credit is NOT required (but it is appreciated)!

reasons why i like the word tomcat bisexual for myself: it fits me more than most other words and i think it’s fun
reasons why i don’t like tomcat bisexual for myself: it’s near exclusively used for me by gatekeepers

here’s a positivity post dedicated to bisexuals who use both butch/femme and doe/tomcat/stag because most of the discourse usually involves using one set or the other, and there’s no rule saying we can’t, or any sign that it’s contradictory, because they can both be a part of our intrinsic identities. femme does, femme tomcats, butch tomcats, and butch stags, you are all so cool and valid - they might even be nice alternatives to “futch” within our community if you’re uncomfortable with that term!! you are not wrong for using multiple labels, you are not biphobic for using the animal labels and you are not lesbophobic for using butch or femme. as long as you aren’t forcing the former on bi sapphics, especially woc, you’re good!!
- sincerely, a tomcat butch

Every once in a while I think about that post that gave different words for femme/butch/futch women based on if they were bi or lesbian or pan or some shit........... Butch bi women were "stags" and femme bi women were "doe", which is fine I guess, but it said that bi futch women are supposed to use "tomcat"................. Girl I am NOT calling myself that

what are ocean sapphics? & flags!
'ocean' is the umbrella grouping term for presentation labels that lesbian & bi/pan sapphics can use regarding femininity, masculinity, and androgyny.
these terms were initially coined by strwbryfemme on twitter, using their gimmick account sapphicimagines back in january of 2022. both accounts have since been deactivated and therefore this thread is long gone. i found them in an old flag hoard album on my camera roll recently and decided to respectfully reupload them in case anyone else would enjoy.
NOTE #1: i will not be putting the rest of this, admittedly quite long, post under a ‘read more’ cut due to the fact that all the information would be lost if someone decided to reblog it and the original post ended up gone sometime in the future. you would not be able to view anything under it, since whatever is there can only be seen on the original page. i apologize if you have to scroll a lot because of this, but that’s unfortunately one of the many inconvenient ways tumblr works.
NOTE #2 (MUST READ): i felt it would be best to swap their usage of 'pearl' to mean masc, not androgyne. this is because these chosen words feel unbalanced in their meanings to me. 'ocean' feels too broad and vague to cover just one category (hence why i made it overarching instead), and doesn't fit its place in the hierarchy of the theme. it'd be like saying, for example: 'cat' is fem, 'animal' is masc, and 'dog' is androgynous; instead of saying 'cat' is fem, 'dog' is masc, and 'furry' (lmao idk ok? bear with me) is androgynous. i then turned what was previously 'pearl' into 'coral' as a replacement, since that made more sense from my perspective. if this confuses you while reading the tweets below, i have put my corrections for the labels/flags in alt text, which you can click on each image to access. if that doesn't help, feel free to ask questions. i tried to make this as easy and least complex as possible, so i apologize if that didn't work.
NOTE #3: if cat (strwbryfemme) and/or atlas (ilikegaycookies, who designed the bi flags btw) finds this and would like me to take it down, i will do so upon request, directly or indirectly, and also delete this blog. i intend no disrespect to either of you and i'm posting this because i like your ideas and don't want them to rot and be forgotten anymore than they already have. i edited the words themselves because i thought they would fit better, but i can also revert them back to their original versions if need be.
with that out of the way, let’s get onto the flags first!

any and all help with IDs/PTs are appreciated! i do not have the spoons to write them out as of now due to the rest of the work i'm putting into this post, but if someone wants to volunteer then i can put all the text into a rentry (or multiple) and edit it here to make the images more accessible to disabled readers. thank you!
here is some more stuff i would like to add (please also read these too if you are interested in claiming, or even if you are not on board with all this):
you should keep in mind that i am a white tme bi sapphic who knows my history and claims 'butch', so i will not argue about butch/femme discourse because i strongly support the terms not being lesbian-exclusive. however, it should be understood that i still know my place and privilege regarding other applicable aspects and do not wish to offend anyone or start discourse here. this post is simply a reupload and attempt at re-suggesting cute terms for personal use only, entirely by choice. they are not designed to be forced on anyone or become mainstream, especially not to replace femme/butch/futch or even the infamous doe/stag/tomcat. you do not have to like these or agree with them. you are allowed to dismiss the idea and move on as it wasn't made to erase or hurt anyone. please hold anyone who does spread these in bad faith accountable, thanks.
with that being said, it is my opinion that we should grant their wishes for wanting to keep this series exclusive to the sapphic community. i do not personally consider either of these individuals to be overall 'bad people', even if we disagree on some things heavily. they still deserve respect for the positive contributions they have made to our community, which is why, again, i will remove all of the above without hesitation if asked by a credible messenger.
one last thing to be reminded of ─ if anyone else ends up playing around with the theme of these terms + flags, for any given reason (such as designing pan/trans/enby/etc. versions), please do not use the word 'fish', especially if you are also white, as that already exists within a Black-exclusive context to be a cultural identity adjacent to 'femme'! i will not speak or give an opinion about what to do or not if you are Black, as i'm sure you will be able to take it from there.
this is not necessary to read, so you can stop now lol ─ anyway, thank you for your attention, and enjoy! reblogs are appreciated, and comments will be listened to. if you have any complaints directed towards the content itself, then i unfortunately cannot help you with that as said content is not really mine. however, i will try to respond to stuff related to my act of reuploading and/or adjusting the terminology. remember that i self-identify as butch and am critical of coining ideas with a similar purpose to doe/stag, but obviously i am not against it. as long as you can understand my point of view, your opinions will matter, even if they (respectfully!) dissent. have a lovely rest of your day/night!

Okay, update on "why don't women have. Cool animal terms." So, from what I've found through deep diving, there are SOME animal related terms for lesbians. There's Tomcat; which is used to describe a bisexual woman with masculine traits, Unicorn; A woman, often bi-sexual, who forms an attachment to an already established couple, and Ursula; a lebian bear (there's so something called a U-haul lesbain, which is a lesbian who gets attached really quick?? Not an animal term, just something I found out). I haven't been in the community for that long, but I have never heard these terms used before. Definitely not nearly as much as terms in the Bear community, which sucks. Lesbians and Bi women should have badass animal terms too. Sure, there's nothing wrong with butch and femme, but some variety would be great to have!
On another note, apparently, another term in the bear community is Dolphine?? Which is a term for a thin, athletic, hairless man??
This is fascinating and my takeaway from all of this is that gay people have the best words. I love gay people.

back again, completely agree. to be honest any part of queer history can be a bit of a mixed bag with foresight involved, such as the one you mentioned of bi women can’t be butch, but also older issues of “you can only be straight or gay” before bisexuality was actually fully understood as an actual thing. also the bi women butch thing confuses me personally because if i recall right, historically gay men have also used the butch/femme labels too. but whatever we’re gonna save you the infodump ramble lol, have a nice day man -tf2 heritage posts
No literally yeah ur right, "butch" and "femme" are not lesbian exclusive labels and discourse about it is almost always surrounded by a whole bunch of bull about how bi women are self-centered faker sluts who want to poison Real Lesbian Spaces with their man residue or whatever. I brought it up to refer to the specific revival of that discourse in like. the mid/late-2010s (I'd say 2016-2018/9? At least that's when I was in it lmao) when someone invented the terms "stag", "doe", and "tomcat" to "replace"/"be the bi versions of" the terms "butch", "femme", and "futch", respectively. It's a shit mindset and I'm glad I'm out of it but I do kind of miss "tomcat" if I'm being real, it's a non-bear animal-themed identifier and I think it's cute. Maybe it's one of those things that I can ✨reclaim✨

Dark Forest Resident: Avery
Tumblr media
Aliases / Nicknames: Terror, Mange-brain, Cutter’s Kittypet
Gender: tom
Sexuality: bisexual
Family: unnamed mother, unnamed father, two unnamed sisters
Other relations: N/A
Clan: N/A
Rank: kittypet
Characteristics: leading cats into traps to test what would happen to them, morbid curiosity
Number of Victims: 10+
Number of Murders: 0
Murder Method: N/A
Method of Harm: luring cats into TNR traps
Known Victims: several unnamed Clan toms
Victim Profile: tomcats
Cause of Death: caught in snare trap
Cautionary Tale: karma’s a bitch
Story:
From a very young age, Avery had watched the Twolegs that worked around him. The ones with the cages were his favourites, since any cat they took with them came back.... different.
They couldn’t have kits. Sometimes they didn’t come back at all.
This intrigued Avery, and-- as soon as his mother kicked him out, he marched into the forest in search of the wild cats he had heard so much about. He wanted to see if, like the strays he had grown up with, Clan toms came back unable to have kits.
So he started luring in Clan cats with the promise of free meals, or-- when the Clan cat was smarter-- he simply used one of his younger sisters as bait, claiming loudly to have taken his sibling from one of the Clans. This always worked, and the toms ended up being released woozy and confused.
Avery always watched them stagger back into the forest, and laughed with his sisters over how stupid they looked.
He did not, however, laugh when he found himself caught in a snare.

you fool, thought i’d do Fireheart or Copperleaf next! but alas, I art a tricky being! Darkstripe, thy beloved!
okay so the first thing that stands out is probably his gender identity and sexual orientation. SO! right NOW, as of Ch. 110ish, Darkstripe is a he/him cismale who KNOWS he is attracted to tomcats, but is AFRAID to voice such opinions! but, as time goes on, he’ll grow to accept himself a little more, thus allowing himself to explore. He will be bi-curious (pink-white-blue flag) for a long while, as he doesn’t know if he’s really attracted to she-cats or not, but will eventually settle on being fully bisexual (90% tom attraction, 10% she-cat attraction, give or take)! and what of his pronouns? well, he will still be primarily he/him, and he would get pissy at you if you insisted he was NOT a tom. but, he does express himself a little Fruitily, though he tries to hide it and be the Big Strong Tomcat he’s supposed to be. eventually he’ll accept that he likes being more lax and feminine. he likes flowers! he likes prettying his pelt! he’s still a tom, but he’s okay with the occasional “she” pronoun (OCCASIONAL!). he’s a femboy, but would also identify with rosboy as well! he is a male, but he likes being feminine and identifying with feminine traits. so: he/him/she/her cismale femboy/rosboy bi-curious transitioning to bisexual.
aside from that, i’d think his ref is pretty standard lol... though it has a few secrets ;)

HELLO !! i've been working hard tonight and now i'd like to propose a term & flag using the style of this post. (please reblog instead of just liking, btw!!)
may i present to you.......
BUTCHCAT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what is "butchcat"? well, it's essentially a combination of the terms "butch" and "tomcat" and it's exclusive to bisexual sapphics.
it can be used a few different ways:
to mean both masculine and androgynous, whether that be presentation-wise, for relationship dynamics & roles, gender identity, or 2-3 together
same as above, but in-between masculine and androgynous rather than both at the same time
same as above, but to be fluid between the two
to be two different but separate identity labels that one identifies with
Tumblr media
next, i'd like to explain my flag design.
to start, the brown stripes are supposed to resemble cat fur. the blue inclusion was inspired by this butch bi flag in particular, and the mint colors are supposed to spice up androgyny, like a breath of fresh air (y'know, how mint tastes like even though i don't actually like it irl lmao).
the stripe meanings are as stated here (the ones in the bi format are essentially just simplified), but i'd also like to expand on what i mean with them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"freedom of gender expression" is supposed to refer to both butch and tomcat separately, but the latter two meanings are each designated to one or the other. i found it difficult to assign something that would refer to tomcat particularly, so i just took inspiration from @doetomcatstag's answered asks on their blog and went with how other bi women have described its significance to them: "fluidity in performance, authenticity in (nby) womanhood and sapphicism." the existence of tomcat is there to help us define the experience of being both bisexual and sapphic in our own way, which in this case as opposed to doe/stag, is combining femininity and masculinity into androgyny for ourselves and other women, or being fluid between them. and of course i made sure to be nonbinary-inclusive. the wording is still a bit strict but as long as you consider yourself sapphic it is designed to resonate with you. "butch chivalry" is a common phrase within our community that honors our code and sworn role as butches. including this acknowledges that we are no less butch, neither for being bi nor for also simultaneously being tomcats.
androgyny & masculinity are self-explanatory.
the middle stripe describes the intersection, which is basically just the already-stated definition of the term, as well as what i said above about the first stripe from the top.
"bisexuality, biromanticism, and recognition that bisexuals are also sometimes gnc and can experience complex relationships with their gender" is deeply important to me personally. this kind of bi erasure is so common, both intentionally and unintentionally. unfortunately we are usually subconsciously dismissed as always being feminine for the availabilty of men, which isn't just biphobic but misogynistic. there are also many lesbians out there who think that only they can be gnc because they're "real" gay women, neither of these statements are true. to be butch and/or tomcat is to inherently bc gnc, which is why this stripe is so important.
expanding on the bottom stripe of the bi-formatted flag - "bisexual sapphic culture; allowing bisexuals the usage of butch/femme from their own history while also honoring the new bi-exclusive terms." this ties in pretty similarly to my point about bimisogyny, except it's slightly different in that it originally neglected the mention that we also have to fight hard to be able to use butch/femme and other "lesbian" culture without backlash. you may have noticed a huge part of this blog is dedicated to fighting that fight, so i thought this would be necessary to include.
Tumblr media
moving on, i'd also like to add that i do, in fact, have assigned meaning for the little minty cat symbol as well:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there is no butch bi or tomcat bi or butchcat bi community without bi solidarity. we have to be there for each other, and stand up for each other when our non-harmful identities are challenged. what does it mean to put on a performance for other (bi) women if you won't even play your part?
Tumblr media
i hope you like it. and please tag me if you use either of these flags for whatever!!
don't forget that this term is exclusive to bi sapphics!! (why?)
also please let me know if this flag design is too similar to another, please & thank you!!
