Me: Wow, the Netflix ATLA was better than what I expected. Indeed, it felt too rushed, probably because they were asked to do only 8 episodes like everything in the platform; but they were still able to capture the feeling of the original, and it was an enjoyable show. Not to mention the effects, those were so well done, especially Zuko fire kicks, I loved those.

Me: Oh... I'm supposed to hate this adaptation.

You know what proves the creators knew nothing about the ATLA fandom? Cause it’s so easy to understand us, truly, if only they tried.

One of the most popular episodes in the fandom, and one of the highest rated, is - Tales of Ba Sing Se. An episode where absolutely nothing happens to progress the story (except Appa’s footprint at the very last second). That episode is nothing but characters. No plot points, no tension, no fight scenes - nothing! Just our favorite characters going about their day.

While the live action is the opposite of that, it’s all plot and no character. So if you really want to make a good adaptation you should listen to your audience, cause it’s not that hard to figure out what we like.

Predictions if there are more seasons of NATLA

Yue will appear again in fox form and have some awkward dialogue with Sokka *obligatory furry joke*

Sometime during the Ba Sing Se arc we’re going to see some brutal death by bending like in episode 1

There’s going to be some kind of ~progressive~ spin on Toph’s parents that downplays the ableism

They’re going to cut out the beach episode

Obligatory Zuko thirst trap scenes when his hair starts growing out

Azula and Zuko will duel in the same courtyard where Ozai burned Zuko and there will be flashbacks to that scene and some monologuing about ~mercy~ and ~weakness~

Zuko’s arc will be hella rushed

They’re going to tamper with the Ba Sing Se political plotlines and come up with something really dumb

A random side character will be revealed as gay in a 5 second throwaway scene

Appa being stolen will not be the reason why they go to Ba Sing Se; instead they’ll go there because Azula will set her sights there after conquering Omashu

Jin will either not exist or will have a scene with Zuko with strong sexual undertones that we will be subjected to through tumblr gifsets for all eternity

(at least) one of the actors will make a joke about a character and/or ship and get #canceled and ruthlessly spammed on Twitter

Both Zukka and Zutara will be baited to some extent both on and off screen and when neither are made canon it will unleash a shitstorm even worse than voltron

Do you get the impression the live action is treating us like utter morons?? Like I thought that making it aimed at an older audience would open the doors for more subtle story telling, but no, they're just using monologues to tell us eveything! Like in the second episode Katara's like 'oh his power isn't that he's the avatar, it's that he ~connects~ to people'. Girl we're not idiots we can see that!! And the first episode with Aang's goddawful 'I don't want this responsibility' monologue

THIS, YES. The word that keeps coming to mind is definitely "subtlety". The show for literal children? Had it. The remake for adults? Not so much.

The one thing that truly irked me about legend of korra (there might be more I just can't think of them rn lol) is that there's not one mention of the kyoshi warriors. Not fucking one. And they're like multiple places they could of put them and I have three examples:

Zaofu

Literally instead of having guards that didn't know wtf they were doing, they could've had the kyoshi warriors. And before yall say "well it's a metal bending city they need metal benders" bro they could've had metal bending kyoshi warriors! And their uniform look like a mix between republic city police armor and traditional kyoshi warrior uniform. I know I'm definitely stretching with this one but hear me out. (Also thier fans I'm pretty sure are made of metal if not in lok they could make them metal) speaking of republic city-

Republic city

I feel like it would've made 100% more sense if suki had transferred some of the kyoshi warriors to be the protectors of republic city than toph all of sudden giving a shit about making laws and creating a police force. Like how cool would it be to have Lin be a kyoshi warrior??? THE daughter of toph beifong being a kyoshi warrior would've been cool as fuck.

Just keep them being the fire lords bodyguards

It's literally cannon that they protect zuko when he becomes fire lord 😭😭 I don't understand why they just didn't keep that for firelord Izumi. Especially during book 3 when zaheer was going after all the world leaders zuko could've mentioned the kyoshi warriors protecting his daughter but worried it wouldn't be enough or something.

Like dude kyoshi warriors were probably on of my fav part of og atla and I hate how they completely got rid of/ not mention it in lok 😭

I guess I'm not done, it's just that one of the most elegant aspects of the OG ATLA is the construction and development of the characters and how that relates to the various dynamics in the show. What I mean specifically is for me at least, part of the spirit of the original is seeing how the characters mirror each other in certain aspects, how in slightly different circumstances, they each could be in each other's shoes or how radically different their upbringing made them from each other.

The most prominent example is the mirroring of Aang and Zuko and how the show spent two and a half seasons showcasing the parallels between these characters through action and story, allowing the viewer to draw comparisons between the two of them that the characters themselves weren't ready to confront or address head on with one another until Zuko went through the metamorphosis needed to make that possible for them as characters.

But there's also Zuko and Sokka and the influences of their fathers, which directly relates to their respective drives to prove themselves and their ideas of honour

Even Azula and Aang and the pressures put upon them by the adults in their lives and how they reacted to the weight of that'

Or how Toph being raised in an overbearing household where she was treated as fragile and helpless vs Katara having to step up and take on an adult/maternal role in the wake of her parents being gone

It's the reason why I hated the dialogue scene between Aang and Zuko and the subsequent talk Aang has with Katara and Sokka about what he learned from Zuko in episode 7 (?) and doesn't bode well for future episodes/seasons. Let us see it! And I just don't think repeating that an adaptation is going to be different than the original is an excuse for less nuanced, less thorough, less detailed writing. Idk.

Okay.

BUT what if.

WHAT IF the live action actually does well?

What if Netflix decides to renew it?

What if they decide to do more than three seasons?

What if they lengthen Aang's journey of mastering the elements while building on the story of the resistance within the Fire Nation?

What if they decide to do more than three seasons and we get to see more of the Southern Water Tribe Warriors?

WHAT IF WE GET MORE TIME WITH THE SWAMP BENDERS?!

What if they extend the story arc for the preparation to invade the Fire Nation?

WHAT IF WE GET MORE OF THE WHITE LOTUS?!

Nobody would have to accept anything from the live action as canon (except for Oma and Shu because they're badass lesbians now) but would it be great to see some more world building?

Personally, I'd love to see more about the resistance within the Fire Nation and more of the resistance in the Earth Kingdom.
