A thing that bothers me about wizard schools in popular media – outside of the magic-grade-school stuff, anyway – is that they're typically depicted as being basically magic universities, but their actual curricula and pedagogical approaches look much more like those of a technical institution. Like, buddy, that's not a wizard university, that's a wizard trade school. You can't just slap university student culture on top of trade school pedagogy. It doesn't work like that – the one emerges from the other!

Sliiightly unrelated, and I absolutely don’t mean this condescendingly (and I don’t mean to keep bothering you either, feel free to ignore ofc) — I’m just in the dark. When you say ‘Trade work’ and ‘learn a trade’… what do you mean by a trade? The only thing that comes to mind with ‘trade’ is being a plumber, woodworker, etc but I’m pretty sure that’s not what you meant ahejdydj
It is! Due to the push for young people to go to college and get jobs that utilize those degrees, the United States has actually seen a concerning decrease across the decades of people who are qualified to do trade work such as plumbers and electricians, etc. As a result, the population in those trades is aging quickly, and we are anticipating that there won't be enough people to do those jobs very soon. A lot of them are nearing retirement age. Thanks to that demographic shift, young people entering those trades are a very high demand, and in many areas, the pay for such a job can be like 50,000 a year, which can be a solid living wage on par with something like teaching. And in most cases, the apprenticeships are paid, which is definitely a consideration for people who don't want to deal with student loans.
@thisarenotarealblog, any input?

I answered one of these the other day, but some options were missing and it didn't feel inclusive enough towards non-US people and people who didn't do university studies so...
"Still studying" = I am pursuing studies in a school (of any kind) at the moment or have enrolled to start soon.
And because these things are Complicated worldwide, please consider:
* high school: a school where you get a general education in a variety of subjects until approx. age 18; graduating from a school like allows you to enroll at university. This includes diplomas such as GCE A-Levels, baccalaureat, Abitur, Matura, etc.
** trade / vocational / technical school: may be an alternative to high school or something done after high school instead of university to learn a trade/craft; when you graduate, you are qualified for a job in the field you studied. Universities may not let you enroll or may ask you to do preparatory classes if you have this type of diploma.
*** Bachelor's degree: a degree equivalent to 3-4 years of university studies. If your diploma is not called a Bachelor but you studied for that long at a university or equivalent institution, choose this.
**** Master's degree: a ~2-3 year degree that complements a Bachelor's degree. If your diploma is not called a Master but you studied for 5+ years total at university or equivalent institution, or got extra uni-level qualifications after your first university degree (but not a PhD/MD), choose this.

Zap!
I have posted about my daughter choosing the Career Center (Votech) over regular high school for her senior year. She is in the electrical program, and very happy the the teacher and the things she’s learning. She comes home several times a week with pix on her phone so I can see the outlets/switches/panel box that she wired during the day.
(aside: her panel box looks neater and more meticulous than any professionally installed one I’ve ever seen)
She also spent a couple of weeks grumbling her way through an online certification class. Then last week she came home and showed me a card. My. My baby. My baby is OSHA CERTIFIED!!!  This is causing an abundance of smile crinkles at the corners of my eyes.

The Beginning
It's been about a month.
If you couldn't guess by my URL, I am a trans person (FTM) who is entering the HVAC trade. This is for a few reasons.
As the economic crisis rapidly sends us streaming forward toward poverty, my entry level job was not making us (my partner and I) enough money anymore.
Gifted kid burnout caught up to me a long time ago, and with the affordability of college being completely impossible without loans I would never have a hope of paying back, I turned to trades as an option of higher education without the ridiculous price tag.
I am more of a hands on person. Sitting down at an office desk was never for me, and I'm not sure why I ever thought it would be. I want to get my hands dirty, and have a new adventure every day.
Why HVAC specifically? Good question. I was interested in trades in general, how things work has always fascinated me. HVAC was a matter of elimination. Medical was not for me, blood and high stakes stress me out and the cost of those courses are very high. I've already flunked out of engineering classes in high school so anything related to it was a no go. Welding was another good option, but with loud sounds and bright lights my autism and bad hearing were not going to have a good time. The last two I was considering were HVAC and electrical. Each excellent fields and I had high interest in both, so I applied for EMT which is a combination of both (electrical mechanical technician, not the medical worker).
Now a new issue arose, one I have dealt with my whole life.
I am transgender.
The current trans panic, living in the bible belt, not passing well, and the already intimidating trades were a lot to take in a navigate, but I believe I have been very fortunate.
The first step was shopping around for a school and being very up front with how I identify and the situation. Emailing schools made it easier to imagine the school as an entity rather than a collection of people each with their own political views that make them view me very differently. I was ghosted by a couple schools, I am unsure if this is because of my identity or if they thought I was a spammer, but for my sake I'd like to think it was the ladder.
I managed to get pell grants, a few scholarships, loans that are far smaller than they would be for a four year degree, and finally an approved application.
The first couple of months were intimidating, there is a lot to learn in a small amount of time and a recent head injury was not helping. However, I do not give up easily. I found that passing had never been more important to me than ever, and I'm not entirely sure why. Perhaps the far more masculine men around me make me feel more inadequate. Perhaps the trans panic has indeed instilled a terror in me of being clocked as trans far more than I originally thought. Perhaps it is simply paranoia and the unknown. Whatever the case, I've found myself taking more steps than I usually do to pass, including binding. I never really did befores since having covid binding has restricted my breathing when any strenuous activity is involved, my chest is not large to begin with, and the mentioned current economic crisis has made it impossible to save for top.
There have been a couple instances when I was misidentified as female, thankfully my voice saved me in that regard, but when I am stopped up due to the weather, it is not as convincing.
In one instance the wrong name was called (since I have been unable to change it) so I had to pretend like my name was simply not on the roster until I could correct the person in private, embarrassing everyone involved. My existence is very alien, so there is no system in place to change my name or inform staff other than by email or word of mouth. It is all very overwhelming.
Other than all of these moving parts, day to day has been very smooth. I can update in the future if there are any incidents or new challenges come up. Thank you for reading.

This job is, somewhat surprisingly, a really cool blend of environmental science and art and Fun Outdoor Activities and even little bit of medical knowldge and I'm genuinely really enjoying it
On the science side of things, you really do have to know a lot about trees and how they work and how to identify and diagnose and treat them (none of which I know how to do yet lol), and there's also this sort of intuitive knowledge to it too that I don't really know how to explain, you just get up close and personal with trees a lot and learn how each one is an individual.
Pruning is, there's an art to it, I haven't done it yet but from what my trainers have described to me it really feels like you're helping shape/sculpt a tree into the best it can be and you have to get creative with how you move, it's this whole dance of swinging and climbing and cutting and it's really freaking cool. I don't know anything about pruning yet but I'm really excited to learn how to do it
Also you're helping a freaking ANCIENT LIVING BEING grow and sustain itself for generations and if that's not the coolest thing ever idk what is? Trees are so damn important to the environment from the habitats and shade they provide, to the fact that they literally help prevent flooding and environmental damage
It's kind of like rock climbing if rocks were shaped like trees. You get to climb around and JUMP a lot which is super fun, you're tied in with ropes so it almost feels like you're floating or gliding. Being roped up in a tree is just sooo different from being on the ground and it also feels a Lot safer than free-climbing bc the most you're ever gonna fall is like three feet
You really do have to get this intuitive knowledge of your body and anatomy and fitness and how your body works, how muscles grow and heal, how to stretch and warm up and recover, etc. I'm learning about muscles I didn't even know I had lmao.
Downside: There's some physics involved ESPECIALLY when it comes to throwing your rope and calculating the arcs in your mind and shit like that. This would be fun for someone who likes that sort of thing but I am just inherently bad at it lol
Also: People LOVE to watch, especially kids. Kids think it's the coolest freaking thing to see someone climbing around in a tree as their job. This is both nerve wracking and extremely adorable
Another really cool thing (from what one of my trainers told me) is that you get to work with the public and like, sometimes tell them that their Favorite Tree that they think is dying is Not Actually Dying, and being able to help nurse it back to health or give them advice on what to do or just assauge their fears in general. And it's just a profession where you get to heal living things, which is just so awesome. (Or remove a danger to human life, in the case of dying trees that need to be cut down)
I'm going to tree medical school to become a tree doctor and getting buff AF in the process
Also my trainers are like freaking squirrels up there I stg, I was just sitting there like :OOO watching them
l can't believe I'm getting paid pretty decent money to learn how to play in trees and swing around like a little monkey. This is the coolest job I've ever had lmao
