Kylo Ren..and where he came from
Okay, I’ve been reading an  article on how abuse shapes a person...I was reading about Emily Bronte’s infamous anti hero Heathcliff, but here we have some fascinating quotes which could also apply to Kylo.
the hero could be a victim or a perpetrator or both, and how does abuse affect his personality and attitudes towards himself and the society he lives in. Besides, the victim may develop anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder, and may suffer permanent physical or emotional damage and that of course will make a deep scar in the hero’s psyche which will turn him into either an angel or a devil.
Now, obsessed fans such as those on the JCF, despise those who love Adam’s conflicted ‘villain’ for many reasons, one being they see his unhappy childhood and the subsequent events that caused Ben’s ‘fall’ as ‘demonising’ the OT cast. I have said repeatedly on this site why it doesn’t, so I don’t need to go into detail of why I believe that, but what I want to explore here is how their very human mistakes led to their son/nephew being essentially driven into the arms of a predator who had been waiting in the wings since his birth.
This is one interesting comment (statement by the WHO in 1999):
Child abuse or maltreatment constitutes all forms of physical and/or emotional ill treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment or commercial or other exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power.
Han, Leia and Luke never physically abused Ben. But the above article states that abuse isn’t always physical or sexual. It can be psychological. And sadly, Ben suffered more than a hint of psychological abuse from his family. The TLJ novelisation mentions how he overheard his parents talking about his ‘potential’ for darkness. Han himself said there was always ‘too much Vader’ in him. Leia chose her career as an escape from her worries, Han spent his time enjoying himself on the Falcon; both spent far too much time with Poe Dameron, or Greer Sonnel, whilst ignoring his own child. And as we all know...he was sent to train with Luke at a very young age, despite having no choice in the matter.
Snoke naturally fed his insecurities about whether or not his family wanted him - and Luke’s fatal mistake the night the temple burned was what truly sealed Ben’s fate. He fled to Snoke who had cultivated his need for a ‘father figure’, and as we saw both in TLJ and the Kylo Ren stand alone comic, Snoke was physically abusive to him, as well as psychological.
Snoke turned Ben to the dark side, but his family set him upon that path, by allowing the scars of their experience with Vader to affect how they saw their child and nephew. Ironically TROS, which tried to satisfy obsessive OT character fans, only made them seem ten times worse than TFA and TROS...instead of coming across as damaged humans who loved their child and nephew but were scarred by their past, TROS made both Luke AND Leia into unfeeling icons rather than human beings, who happily accepted yet another unfeeling icon as a replacement for their broken damaged ‘blood heir’. Ben never enjoyed what Rey did, a blessing from Luke and lots of hugs plus one on one training from his mother.
Instead, he was cast aside, ignored and forgotten, having to rely on a made up memory of his father to ‘do the right thing’ and save the ‘more important’ person - the girl his family had chosen as his substitute and almost killed him.
Ultimately, like Bronte’s Heathcliff, Ben Solo never stood a chance. Like Heathcliff, there could be no happy ending for him.
He was unwanted from the very beginning.

I had to draw this… 💔 as painful as it was I’m happy with the way it came out. It’s been three years since Tros came out and I’m still upset. 😭💔
But there is hope in this drawing from the quote… it’s from the Tros novelisation “I will always be with you” “No one is ever really gone” and one day Ben Solo will come back🦋✨

Is it true that Darth Vader without the suit would’ve destroyed Palpatine but Palpatine would have transferred his essence into no suit Vader in canon? I’ve heard people say that would’ve happened or something
I think it's just people speculating. George Lucas once said Anakin had the potential to be twice as powerful as Palpatine if Mustafar hadn't happened. There's also that hilarious (to me) alternate ending from the ROTS video game where he just...stabs Palpatine.
The essence transfer thing I'm not sure about. There's the whole "trying to create a dyad" thing from the TROS novelisation. But idk. Hard to say when it actually hasn't happened in canon!

Don't go, you're half of me now 🎶
”It felt like half of her was missing, and she supposed it was. The girl who had felt alone for all those years on Jakku had been part of a dyad the whole time. And just when she’d discovered that precious connection, that incredible oneness, it was ripped away.” | tros novel by rae carson.

who writes: A kiss of gratitude!?
I wish I could unread and unsee all of this. I don’t think I can take anymore betrayals. yes it’s out of context, I have not read the book, but it should not be there.
The full description of Ben saving Rey and their kiss is shorter than the actual scene in the movie. The emotion is lacking, the power and depth we saw, portrayed by the actors,  are gone.
The author does give Rey more of a center stage in the aftermath with the dyad and their continued connection beyond space and time and I love this crumb and I should feel content, but the “kiss of gratitude” takes passionate love out, like something dirty.  I feel so angry and heartbroken all over again.
In the end they got rid of Ben Solo, because they thought a dyad with a “controversial” love story was too risky to pursue for more than a minute, and focused on the safe and dull trio.
The one good thing about this, is the confirmation of how unbreakable their connection is,   and when you stop and think about it, it is more than romantic, it’s epic, they simply refuse to acknowledge it with words so they can move on quickly, but it allows us to continue this story as many have done already.
I imagine Rey continuing with her training and adventures for a while, always connected to Ben listening to him, eventually seeing him, learning something new about Ben Solo every day, his little quirks, his fondness for calligraphy, she  knows all his smiles. And one day, when the galaxy needs the power of the dyad more than ever, the Force will reunite them. Well that’s one take... but there are so many.

The family she’d been seeking hard been ahead of her the whole time, and she wouldn’t change a thing.
Leia and Luke stood on the edge of the homestead, glowing blue, smiling at her. Rey missed them both so much.
Luke gave her a gentle nod, It’s yours, Rey.
She turned back to the trader woman. Standing tall, she said, “Rey Skywalker.”
TROS novel has me getting emotional about Rey Skywalker all over again. Especially with the added It’s yours, Rey. It further emphasises the fact that they embrace her as part of their family. And Rey willingly accepts. It’s so beautiful and heartwarming. ❤️❤️❤️
And I love the callback to Maz’s words in TFA about the belonging Rey sought being ahead. It’s a nice reminder of Rey’s journey of trying to figure out who she is and find where she feels she belongs. We really see the conclusion of that journey (and the beginning of a new one) in this moment. She knows who she is, has found where she feels she belongs, with people she chooses to call family (and who embrace her as family in return), and she does it all with a complete disregard for bloodlines and lineage. It’s such a touching ending.

Comparison between Rae Carson’s (canon novelisation) description of Ben falling into the crevice and Michael Kogge (junior novelisaton). Kogge left out a lot of detail in his adaptation and [obviously] simplified a lot of the plot points, but Carson tweeted that she and Kogge worked together, so this was piqued my interest. Especially after we know that the fissures are access points to the WBW.

'It's not Rey's job to save Ben.'
I lost count of how many times I was told that.
So...why was it Ben's job to save Rey?
She didn't love him - the novelisations of TROS made that very clear. She repeatedly tried to kill him (and to quote Jack Sparrow, one time actually succeeded.) She made it very obvious that they were on enemy sides, including after his clumsy Darth Darcy proposal, where she showed her rejection by reaching for a weapon.
Yet Ben chose to save Rey. And it killed him.
