*materializes into existence*
Hi :D
Inspired by your whump tss fics!
Anyway, mayhaps an idea: Whumpee is very distrustful of everyone, even after being rescued. The only person who can come close to them without them getting very tense is Caretaker. The rest of the team is... well, unsure about Whumpee at this point. Someone says something that sounds a little too much like Whumper (accidental trigger), and Caretaker is the only one who can calm Whumpee down.
Do with that what ya will.
Have fun :D
hi!! thank you so much for the support, this is an amazing idea! i think i'm going to do my heroes and villains au for this one, it's a really good fit for this particular prompt, plus, father figure janus has my WHOLE HEART he's the best caretaker.
this fic features whumpee roman, caretaker janus, and mentions of whumper patton! also, logan and virgil are there but they aren't really anything they're just chillin'. logan is just trying his best.
also the beginning kinda just offers some general exposition to the au and the dynamics so it's just short little snippets of life before the big angst bomb comes raining down.
(cw -> past parental abuse, flashbacks, panic attacks, brief physical violence)
Roman wasn't a violent dog.
But he knew why he bit.
Every night, he saw the face of his uncle, the man who raised him, the man who taught him everything about the world. And he shivered, because while he never wanted to see Patton again, he also wanted nothing more than to be enveloped in his arms one more time.
When he looked in the mirror, Roman wanted to erase himself and start over from the beginning. Permanent scars that were never going away, endless reminders of what a failure he had been. His gauntlet was the only part of him that was pristine, and even that was so out of his reach.
Janus told him that it was Patton's fault that he didn't know how to use his powers, but Roman just couldn't believe it. He was a superhero. He had to know how to use his powers no matter what. Being a kid was no excuse. Being young and impressionable was no excuse. Being starved and beaten and tortured every time he made the smallest mistake was still not an excuse.
Roman was a hero. He had to be better.
--
"Virgil, come on, how many times do I have to remind you to wipe your feet before walking in?" Logan groaned, "We're guests in this house, we should not be dirtying it."
"Sorry, Pa," Virgil mumbled, "I'll clean it up."
"Thank you," Logan said, "And have half a mind not to do it again."
Roman, who was seated on the couch as this argument occurred, squeezed his eyes shut steeling himself as he waited for the slap. Or the hit. Or a cry of pain from Virgil. But seconds passed, and there was no sound except for the spray cleaner and scrubbing the floor. The mess took all of ten seconds to clean up, if that. Roman didn't understand. When he was under punishment with Patton and had to clean floors, it felt like it took much longer.
--
Roman's face was wet with tears, but he found himself feeling scarily numb as he sat in Janus' lap, fiddling with the gemstone necklaces held loosely around his neck with common kitchen twine.
"Ro...we really need to do something about these nightmares," Janus murmured, nothing but warmth in his voice and body. Roman almost felt safe in his arms. "It's not healthy for a kid your age to be waking up screaming every night."
"I'm sorry, sir," Roman said flatly, still trapped in a hellish haze, "I'll be better. I'll do anything you want, just spare me. Please."
Janus could feel his heart shatter in two. He hugged the teenager close, starting to pet his hair gently.
"Oh, baby..." Janus whispered, "What on Earth are we gonna do with you...?"
--
"If you hate me so much, maybe you should just put me back where I came from! You didn't have to adopt me, you could have just gotten a perfect kid instead!"
It was rare for Virgil to shout, so when Roman heard it, he was shaken immediately. Out of pure self preservation, he hid himself in the blanket he had been wearing. When Logan and Virgil argued, it was difficult, and it was messy. They were both headstrong people, which often led to butting heads more than either of them, or the two people they lived with, liked.
"Virgil, don't be ridiculous, I don't hate you!" Logan retaliated, "I just want you to stop closing yourself off, it's useless to try and handle everything in the world by yourself! You're just a child, when will you get that through your head??"
"Maybe I will once you stop micromanaging me like I'm five years old!" Virgil yelled, "I'm not a baby anymore, Pa, I don't need you hovering over my shoulder! Do you know how hard it is to be known as the tattletale at school?? Do you even care?? No, you don't, because all you care about is making yourself feel helpful!"
"I could strangle you right now!"
"Fine! Do it, see if I care!"
Virgil stormed off, slamming the door to his room, causing Roman to tremble where he sat. Oh, boy. Virgil was going to get it now. Roman waited for Logan to roar, to scream at Virgil to open the door before he regretted ever raising his voice at him. The thought made Roman so nervous. Virgil was injured already. He couldn't handle being strangled too. He just couldn't.
So Roman did the heroic thing: he stepped in.
Before Logan could take another step towards Virgil's room, Roman rushed in front of him.
"Virgil didn't mean it, Virgil didn't mean that!" he insisted, his words spilling over each other.
"Were you listening in to our conversation?" Logan sputtered, his face turning a bit red, "Wh- why would you do that? That was between me and Virgil, it has nothing to do with you!"
Logan side-stepped Roman, coming closer to Virgil's room. In a panic, Roman lunged at Logan, hoping to protect Virgil from any sort of wrath.
"Get off me!" Logan exclaimed, "Roman, what are you doing??"
"Stay away from him!" Roman begged as he punched and kicked blindly, thinking of nothing except weakening Logan, protecting Virgil. Weakening Logan, protecting Virgil. It was his responsibility. "He's still healing!"
"Roman, stop!" Logan pleaded, "Please, stop it, you're hurting me!"
Roman was much younger than Logan. But he wasn't that much weaker. He was a young hero, having trained his entire life to fight people, while Logan was just a civilian. No superpowers, no training. He was a bit fragile, in fact. So it wasn't a surprise that Roman was "winning" this exchange, but the child was too blinded by panic to realize this.
"Don't touch Virgil!" Roman begged, "Don't, please, he can't handle it! He can't handle that, he's good, he's good, he'll be good!"
"Janus!" Logan started to scream, thrashing to get away from Roman, "Janus, help me!"
And just then, Roman's entire world seemed to stop.
Logan's begging and crying for help sounded so much like his own. The way his words would bounce against the wall, hitting nobody as he was forced to endure hours of torture in solitary confinement, no sound to keep him company except for his own fruitless pleading. Logan already sounded so defeated. He sounded like he was ready to die. Just like Roman had been all those times before.
Roman's breathing grew shallow and stuttered, and the second he loosened his grip, Logan scrambled out of Roman's arms, shoving him hard. As Janus raced into the room, he saw his child hyperventilating, and Logan with a scratched up face and broken glasses.
"What- what on Earth happened here?" Janus demanded, "Logan, what did you do??"
"What did I do?" Logan repeated, "Why are you asking me that?? Roman's the one that attacked me, he tried to kill me!"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry- I'm sorry-!" Roman whispered, starting to grip his own hair as he curled in on himself.
"He's a little monster!"
Roman's shallow breathing turned into desperate gasps as he wheezed irregularly, his chest rising and falling largely.
"There's ice in the freezer, I'm so sorry, Lo. I'm so sorry. I should have warned you- I'll pay for your glasses."
"No need," Logan said coldly, "I need some space, if you don't mind. I'm getting tired of being attacked from all sides."
Janus opened his mouth to say something to Logan as the angry man left, but he was distracted by the sound of Roman's fight for air. When Janus looked over, the child had tears streaming down his face, his eyes large and wild, as if he was a wounded animal.
"Darling...come here," Janus whispered sitting on the floor in front of Roman and starting to pull him close.
"No, please," Roman whispered, "Please don't hurt me. I'm sorry- I didn't mean to- I- I-"
"Shh...shh, Roman, don't speak," Janus murmured, hugging Roman gently. "Breathe. I understand. I understand you. I do."
Janus saw so much of himself in those terrified brown eyes. Roman just wanted to protect somebody, and it had gone way too far. What was the poor kid to do? Of course, he had to apologize to Logan. But that would have to be at another time.
Roman shuddered, and before he could overthink anymore, he threw himself into Janus' arms, sobbing vehemently into his shoulder. Guilt washed over him like waves, and he almost wished that Patton was around to punish him. It was what he deserved for attacking somebody weaker than him. In that regard, was Roman really any different from Patton?
"I'm bad," Roman mumbled, "I'm bad, I'm a villain- I'm horrible-..."
"Shh," Janus repeated, rubbing gentle circles onto Roman's back, "Shh, darling. You're not bad. You're not a villain. You're a child. You're a child who's scared. Let yourself be scared. I'm here for you. I'm going to protect you, sweet thing. I promise."
"But what about Logan?" Roman asked, staring up at Janus with tear-stained cheeks and round eyes that broke Janus' heart.
"Logan will be okay, darling," Janus reassured, "He will be. I'm going to help him, and I'll take him to the doctor's, and I'll make sure he's doing okay. He'll understand. He will. He's got to."
"I don't know why I did that," Roman whimpered, "I don't know why I kept going, I could have stopped, he cried for help, I could have stopped!"
"I know, baby, I know," Janus soothed, "I know how it feels. I know. You made a mistake. You messed up. But you're not in trouble. You're not going to get hurt because you hurt someone else. What's the use of that? Then, everybody is hurt, and nobody is happy. Does that make sense?
"I- I- I guess so," Roman whispered, "But- Logan hates me. He hates me now, he hates me, he thinks I'm a monster-"
"He does not think that," Janus said calmly, "He was speaking while he was angry. Think about it. Do you say what you mean when you're angry? Does anybody?"
Roman shuddered. Patton did. But he didn't say so.
"It'll be okay, sweetie," Janus reassured, continuing to hold Roman as he rocked the teenager gently on the carpeted floor. "It's okay."
Janus used to be a violent dog too.
He understood why Roman bit.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Chapter 17 Chapter 18
Summary: Remus, Serpent, Virgil, and Logan all chat... then start planning for what they will do now.
______________________________
Remus told them about how Roman had snapped, how they had pulled away from each other… till Roman lost the one thing he loved, the attention. Then he turned against Remus.
Serpent crossed his arms listening, though it wasn’t the first time for him hearing of this story.
Logan took a deep breath shaking his head, “So your brother stole your identity, became a villain-”
“Yep! Exactly!” Remus nodded, smiling.
“Then moved to town, became my roommate… and was actively trying to kill me and my bo- enemy Phantom.”
Remus laughed and nodded, “Unfortunate… but you’re still correct!”
Virgil nodded, “Well I don’t think he’s planning on leaving even though you came here. He has bigger plans at hand.”
Remus looked over at him, “Well we have to do the one thing I’m allergic to.”
“Baths?” Serpent asked, looking at him with a smirk.
“Well… yes that would be nice. but no, not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about… you know the ‘P’ word.”
“Ah yes… Planning.” Serpent sighed, “Well we definitely will need one, but first we need to go somewhere since my hotel room was decimated.”
“We could go to my apartment.” Logan replied.
“I thought you were roommates.” Serpent glared at him.
“We are… but you know, why would he think we would go there. Plus if he comes there we'll outnumber him.”
Remus grinned putting an arm around Logan, “Oh I definitely like you, now show us there I want to see my Brother’s bedroom.”
Logan nodded and looked over at Virgil, “Would you be able to transport us all?”
“You don’t want to walk?” Virgil asked.
“No, it’s a bit too far. Also I believe it would be safer for us to get there right away rather than standing out exposed.”
Virgil nodded, “Ok, nobody is to let go of me at any point, no matter what. I’ll take Remus first then come back for you, Logan, and Serpent.”
Remus smiled, throwing himself at Virgil and grabbing onto him. “Lets go Emo,” he whispered with a wink.
Virgil blushed a bit and nodded, bringing Remus into the shadows and disappearing.
Logan glared a bit then noticed Serpent staring at him, “It’s nothing, don’t look at me like that.”
“Mmm like what? You know I'm quite interested in your professional relationship with Phantom. It seems you’re quite close, getting jealous when someone flirts or is close to him. Oh and also almost slipping and saying he’s your boyfriend then failing to cover it by saying your enemy when anyone who looks at you would know you’re not enemies in any meaning of the word.” Serpent replied, looking down at his hand.
“What! No! I… No it’s not like that… we-”
“What’s up?” Virgil asked just coming back.
“Nothing!” Logan replied quickly, walking over and wrapping his arms around Virgil.
Serpent smirked, walking around and grabbed Virgil’s back.
Virgil pulled them into the shadows, though soon enough they appeared back in the apartment.
Serpent let go of him once inside and looked around a bit.
Remus popped out of Roman’s bedroom smiling, “Hey guys! Oooh I see Starlight is getting a bit personal with you Phanty~”
Virgil blushed brightly looking away.
Logan instantly let go of Virgil and stepped away, “Um… anyway! Let’s start planning.”
Serpent sat down on the couch nodding, “Yes, let's.”
Virgil sat down on a chair.
Remus went over sitting himself next to Serpent smiling, “Yay! Plan time!”
Logan laughed softly grabbing some snacks. He came back over and placed them on the coffee table then was suddenly pushed by Remus into Virgil’s lap.
Virgil blushed brightly when Logan was pushed onto him.
“Oh! Sorry!” Logan blushed glaring at Remus then got up and sat down on another chair.
They started talking trying to figure out plans and what to do. Exchanging ideas on how they’d get Roman… and how they’d find them. Just preparing for their next meeting with him.

ins and outs of 2024 (sanders sides fandom edition)
ins (😍):
-remy centric art/fics/creations (i feel like he’s going to make a comeback!).
-aus where all the sides are related/family.
-drawing the sides as animals.
-constructive tss criticism without tagging thomas.
-dancer aus!
-roman/logan angst that has nothing to do with them turning into villains.
-uniquely styled fics (bullet fics, poem fics, script fics, video fics, podfics, you name it!).
-overaccessorized cosplays!
outs (🙄):
-blaming roman for things that aren’t his fault.
-incorrect quotes where the entire punchline is just infantilizing patton.
-“(side) needs to have a villain arc in canon!”/“(side) is gonna become a dark side!”.
-aphobia/arophobia in the fandom (i could write an essay about this).
-calling logan and janus alcoholics.
-“roman isn’t thomas’ hero” jokes.
-saying “did you even watch the series?” when people express their dislike towards a side.
-racism in the fandom (i’ve written essays about this).

Note
for the emotional anguish meme: abner krill and simon monroe!! <3
thanks emyr!! please imagine me rubbing my hands together with evil glee. ***trigger warning for suicidal ideation, death, and trauma, and spoilers for the suicide squad (2021) and in the flesh.
top 5 ways to wrest anguish from abner krill:
one of those "villain mind powers puts heroes in their worst nightmare scenarios" except the worst nightmare scenario is literally just his childhood in the lab with his mom. grown-up abner screams, cries, curls up into the fetal position to try to block out the noises of his siblings screaming.
on that note, shapeshifting antagonist transforms into abner's mom OR makes his teammates look like his mom and he goes ballistic and just starts melting the people he loves <3 he's so op none of them have a defense against him. max angst!!!
put him back in a lab as an adult. maybe waller or the US government is experimenting on him to recreate the polka-dot disorder or enter the polka-dot dimension. that man is a lab rat, put him back in a cage <3
i saw something like this in a fic once i think ?? but i only read the description so idk what the specifics were. concept: an AU where abner actually teams up with starro in the suicide squad. maybe there's a psychic link there where they can communicate, maybe he's just disposed to be sympathetic towards this other being imprisoned in a cage and experimented on. he participates in the mass murder of corto maltese and also kills his former teammates. this is more about MY emotional anguish, but then also consider: at some point after it's all over, abner gets the chance to look into an alternate world where he didn't go down this path, and sees how he could've found a family with those people he so callously disintegrated. anguish and despair!
a slightly quieter one, but honestly you could have the entire TSS just slightly to the left and end up with a horrible end for abner in any other way: he chooses to run and gets his head blown off by waller, or he stays but is too cowardly to actually fight starro--thus missing out on being a hero. give him an ignoble end, no emotional catharsis, and he abandoned his team when they needed him most.
so to sum up really you can squeeze a lot of angst out of his relationship with his mom and his team because at the center of abner krill is a vast consuming hole of loneliness and self-loathing. yay!
okay, now for simon:
he actually goes through with killing kieren honestly would be number one! he's so torn between loving kieren and needing to hold true to his conviction that the second rising is necessary and good. in the show obviously he chooses kieren because... that's the kind of show it is... but if a few things had happened differently (kieren rejected him, for instance?) things could've been very different.
a riff on the above: he attempts to kill kieren and kieren is able to fight and stop him, but forever after that rejects him. simon's right back where he started, a radical who wants to change the world through fire and brimstone, in the throes of utter loneliness and lacking all sense of self apart from his mission.
look, we all know he murdered his mom while as a zombie, which is angsty enough to begin with. what if he gets force-fed blue oblivion (or better yet, has to take it as a show of loyalty to the prophet?) and goes on another spree and hurts or kills his dad too? lol.
a riff on the above: same scenario with the drug but he ends up hurting/killing someone close to kieren, like his parents. idk i just think the tension between simon's loyalty to the prophet and simon's love for kieren is so delicious.
imho the way the show uses blue oblivion didn't reach its full potential, as it seemed to crop up as something the PSD sufferers don't really want to do unless they already have a desire to hurt humans (or at least no qualms about it); i would've liked to see a new version of blue oblivion released that is actually so addictive to them that simon starts using as in small doses a coping mechanism, but he always locks himself up so he doesn't harm people. of course this goes sideways and he ends up harming people and blaming himself.
........so to sum up really you can squeeze a lot of angst out of his relationship with his parents and loyalty to the prophet and/or kieren because at the center of simon monroe is also a vast consuming hole of loneliness and self-loathing. yay?

Cracked Ribs and Old Promises -
TSS Analogical superhero/villain au fic
Warnings: mentions of trouble eating, anxiety, dark/misguided Roman, severe injury, let me know if i should add more!
Thank you to @the-modern-typewriter for the scenario prompt that inspired me to write this!!
“The Knight had been going after anyone he could deem evil, and it had gotten to the point that The Knight had to be leashed in, forced into a league of heros to keep him from going wild. It slowed him down in the end, yes, however, not for good.
Why did Virgil know this, you might ask?”
A new Superhero in town was quickly becoming known for his super strength, and ability to pull objects temporarily from thin air, his chosen name? The Knight. Dressed in galiant and knightly garb and known to speak like a true fairytale prince.
He was also known for constantly disrupting the balance code between villains and heroes.
Some villains were labeled dangerous, others not so much, some were simply suspicious, others weren’t quite villains by definition. Some of those that had powers chose to avoid the hero scene, with the sad disadvantage of being mistaken as having suspicious intents with secrecy. The Knight had been going after anyone he could deem evil, and it had gotten to the point that The Knight had to be leashed in, forced into a league of heros to keep him from going wild. It slowed him down in the end, yes, however, not for good.
Why did Virgil know this, you might ask?
He knew this because The Knight had recently zeroed in on him, a bystander to most, but a non-threatening villain to those few heroes who knew of him. Perhaps, though, he was more of a vigilante, bordering hero terms but always mistaken for a villain. What could he say? Black and purple looked good on him!
Perhaps it was because The Knight had zeroed in on his powers, apparently no one was good if they had control over shadows and darkness, right? The Knight’s morals always seemed too black and white, nevertheless, The Knight seemed to trail him wherever he went. It was a surprise that The Knight didn’t assault him at work or at home.
Seriously, as if Virgil didn't have enough of an anxiety disorder as it was!
Still, there were upsides to it all. The Knight was in a league with a couple of nicer superheroes, ones that spared him or directed The Knights agressions away from him. In fact, one of Virgil’s favorite superheros from that bunch was his own ‘nemesis,’ L.O.G.(Logical Omni Genius, though only Virgil knew that). Truly, there was very little rivalry between them, in fact it bordered on companionship.
Their first fight had been one of wits, moves, and careful actions. Riddles and brain teasers, ‘answer me this and I won’t shut down the factory’s powergrid’ questions and more. There was little aggression, nor any hostility. L.O.G. knew of Virgil’s environmentally friendly motives, or at least learned about them quickly. In all reality, L.O.G. took place in making sure Virgil's plans were both foolproof and harmless to the people it would affect. Virgil even had a little sense of pride in that L.O.G had verbally deemed him a worthy ‘nemesis.’ Still, Virgil was a villain, if only because he could no longer bother the breath to defend himself from having the label.
Today, though. Today was different.
Virgil had nothing but his shadows, he was built for stealth, for mind games, for eliciting existential fear. Virgil was not built to fight, no, he actually bruised very easily, he couldn’t even throw a proper punch despite L.O.G.’s best attempts to teach him self defense. Virgil really wasn’t built to be the villain people made him out to be.
The Knight, for whatever reason, was more fired up than ever to get at him this time. Virgil had been cornered on his route to visit the site of his next strike, weaponless and with nothing but his mask to hide his identity. Well, it wasn’t like Virgil needed weapons, of course, but a holstered dagger sounded great right about now, anything to defend himself from The Knight’s wrath!
From the get go, The knight had already managed a solid surprise punch to the back of his shoulder, he would be surprised if his shoulder wasn’t dislocated already from that one hit alone. Thankfully though, Virgil(or, in his current situation, ‘Nightmare’) didn’t need his shoulder to control the surrounding evening shadows.
The Knight didn’t take kindly to that, growling out rude comments about Virgil’s very existence. Virgil tried to remain in his calm, sarcastic demeanor, firing back witty remarks and snide comments to keep Roman distracted while he formulated an escape plan. Virgil hadn’t eaten well in the past few days due to the stress, so his energy was almost too low to use his shadows to teleport himself, so that was saved as a thread to grasp as a last resort.
Still, though, The Knight had cornered him good, thankfully but also sadly away from civilian life, away from superhero patrol routes, away from anything that could have saved Virgil if he had just begun screaming for help. There was no way out.
The Knight was quickly losing patience with Nightmare, tired of the wordplay and tired of the mind games. All too soon The Knight had Nightmare in his grasp, ignoring how frail and light the villain was as he tossed the man around, expecting the real fight to start. But it didn’t, no shadows came to attack him, but instead worked to cushion each blow, or fall that was administered to the shadowy villain.
He was getting angry, why wasn’t this awful villain fighting back!
The Knight finally tossed Nightmare against a close by brick wall, trying to ignore the sickening thud of the man collapsing to the ground. Thankfully, the man was still breathing, and even struggling to sit up. Still alive, that was good.
“Some chivalrous Knight you turned out to be..” Virgil muttered, though not really expecting the other to hear him.
“You are one to talk, you vile Villain.” The ‘hero’ spat back.
“God, oh chivalrous one, if you hate my guts so much why haven’t you killed me yet? Poor taste, I’m tellin ya, leaving an injured animal in its misery.” Virgil joked sarcastically, growing tired of the other drawing out these exchanges. There was no doubt that a few of his ribs were cracked, and his right shoulder was definitely dislocated now, a possible fracture or brake on the same arms wrist. He didn’t even want to consider the hell that was going to be hiding the bruises at work, if he could even make it that far. He just wanted to get home already.
However, Virgil’s choice of words rung out in the air, and for the first time the prince was silent, staring at him with a mix of unreadable emotions. The next few words out of The Knight’s mouth as his eyes narrowed at Virgil made his blood run cold.
“You know what? Maybe I will.” Next thing Virgil knows, there's a sharp sword in the other’s grip, and hes stalking solemnly up to the injured villain.
Panic seizes Virgil, flooding his senses and throwing his frazzled mind into overdrive. Shadows zip around him, coalescing around him as his physical body quickly fades to teleport, but not before seeing The Knight running at him with the sword drawn. The danger recedes as his body dissipates.
“Where now?” The shadows ask him.
He responds, weakly, “Safety.”
He expects to be deposited in front of his home, where he can curl up and sleep the pain off, and perhaps take a trip to the doctor to investigate his wounds. Expects a night of weak painkillers and an uncomfortable couch, an aching chest and another lonely, hungry 24 hours.
What he doesn’t expect, is to be softly placed in front of L.O.G.’s private lair’s door. Despite the confusion and disorientation, Virgil knows his time is limited before he blacks out and is really put in danger, so he stumbles up and presses the right button to be let in. L.O.G’s hyper intelligent A.I(aptly named Data) system’s voice answers the call.
“Hello, Nightmare. Welcome back.” Virgil sags against the side of the wall, wheezing a bit as his exhaustion finally hits.
“Hey, Data. I-is L.O.G home?”
“Negative.”
Virgil curses, “Do I have permission to enter?”
“What is your reason for this emergency?” L.O.G’s only rule for Virgil entering the lair without himself present was that it had to be an emergency, and Data was simply confirming to inform L.O.G of said emergency upon his return.
“Critical injury, as well as imminent threat of blacking out in about 7 minutes, 10 tops.” Virgil wheezed, and was grateful that Data asked no more questions to let him enter. He stumbled inside, thankful to be in a safe environment to black out in.
“Nightmare, do you require any assistance? You are disoriented, I could assist you.” Her voice was calm, obviously concerned that Virgil was going to drop dead. In all reality, Virgil’s energy had just been overused. The recliner looked tempting, but his ribs ached at the thought, he needed to lay flat.
“Is there a bed anywhere?” He asked, hoping that he wouldn’t have to sprawl out on the floor.
“Yes, let me bring it out of the wall for you.” Data’s voice was calming to his rapid beating heart. He watched with a bit of amusement as a panel slid down from a wall to reveal an extra room, set with a bare bed and a dresser, some posters and even a pile of folded clean clothes yet to be put away. “You can rest here until L.O.G. returns from his current patrol. Feel free to ‘yoink’ one of L.O.G’s hoodies if you feel so inclined, so that you do not get cold. I can assume you do not have the energy nor the time to make the bed before blacking out.” Virgil snickered softly, knowing data’s verbal slang was his own doing. Still, Data was right, he was most certainly running out of time.
Slowly trudging up the few small stairs to the opened room, he expressed his gratitude to Data before he lost the energy to talk. He made quick work of a deep blue hoodie, not even bothering to take his roughed up suit-top off when considering how much effort and pain it took to even pick up the hoodie and put it on.
He was lucid enough to toe his boots off, but at that point, the edges of his vision were darkening, and he knew he needed to lay down quickly. Carefully, he laid down flat on his back, distantly thankful for L.O.G’s choice in memory foam, adjusting the hood over his eyes and attempting to get comfortable. It took another minute before Virgil’s vision gave in, and he was out like a light for the next three hours to recharge his energy from overusing his ability.
….
….
Logan was glad that this patrol had been one of information gathering rather than of action. It was something he could do well and keep himself occupied while the others were off doing who knew what. Most currently, no one seemed to be up to much, not even his nemesis, whom he hadn’t heard from in just under a week.
Now that the patrol was over, everyone was returning to their secondary abodes/lairs to recharge for the night, considering how late it was. In fact, Logan was anticipating coming home to a quiet, normal morning, perhaps even with the chance to read more of his current book. What he had not expected, was for Data to greet him as L.O.G. at the door, instead of Logan.
That meant only one thing.
“I must inform you that Nightmare is currently resting within your bedroom, and to be careful not to spook him.” Logan barely registered why, striding up into the lair to find his nemesis resting in his bed. No contact for a full week, not even a hello, and Nightmare is resting in his bed.
He got so far as to reach out and rest his hand on the vigilante’s shoulder, expecting him to awaken with a start. To his surprise, the man whimpered but otherwise did not wake.
Strange.
“Data. What was Nightmare’s reason for entry?” Now that Logan was getting a good look at the other, he noticed a bruise peeking out on Virgil’s neck, and another poking out from Virgil’s hand. He knew the other bruised easily, but these were dark and fresh and angry, a worrying combination.
“To recite the recording exactly,” Data began, before switching over to the recording of Nightmare’s labored and pained voice, “Critical injury, as well as imminent threat of blacking out in about 7 minutes, 10 tops.”
“When did he get here?” Logan took notice of Virgil’s breathing, each breath still labored as if it hurt to expand his chest. Normally Nightmare was the type to curl up no matter the position or place of rest. Seeing the other laying flat out and stock still was highly concerning. “About two hours and 34 minutes ago. I am sensing concern, L.O.G., if it helps, a body scan of Nightmare’s current health indicates that it is stabilizing and not depleting.” Logan nodded.
Nightmare was experiencing an energy blackout, which meant that he would be out for the next 30 minutes to an hour, likely the latter due to his injuries. For now though, Logan draped a blanket over his injured companion and set to work on preparing a late meal and some coffee. Sleep would not be an option tonight.
He’d settled on a frozen pizza, it being too late to make a full meal. He set aside a tall glass of water and strong painkillers before he forgot, then had Data upload and present his league’s daily task logins for the week as well as send out a request to his league’s best healer, Patton, for possible assistance, looking for something to do to pass the time. He was much too stressed to read for leisure now.
He felt his eye twitch as Roman’s log sheet remained a mess, knowing he’d have to sit down and force Roman to fill it out correctly before lecturing him on why he was in the league in the first place. Strangely, Roman’s current log for the day remained blank, which was for one, against the rules. And secondly, entirely unlike Roman. He’d ask Roman about it later, and hope that Roman did not go completely awall.
Logan manages to busy himself until Nightmare wakes up, eventually hearing Data answer to Nightmare’s soft question. There's a bit of shuffling, it taking much longer for Virgil to arrive into Logan’s kitchen than he would have liked to see.
“Goodmorning, V. Coffee?” Came Logan’s strained voice, the question was rhetorical, obviously. Virgil was hugging his right arm with his left, which was odd because it was always the opposite. Virgil said nothing in return, a guilty look passing over his pale face.
Indeed. Something was definitely wrong.
“Sit down.” Logan ordered, “You are not going anywhere until I’ve taken care of your wounds.”
Virgil complied without complaint, sitting slowly in a chair instead of on his usual counter perch. He waited, watching Logan pull out the pizza and set it out to cool after cutting it into slices. And yet, still, Logan’s silent questions did not get directed at him.
“You're not interrogating me? Or angry?”
“Oh no, I’m furious. But, shockingly, not at you.” Logan looked up, a fiercely passionate glint to his eyes as he stared at Virgil’s obviously injured wrist, unconsciously being cradled in his other arm.
“If I ask you what happened, you will run, won’t you?” Virgil could not confirm nor deny this, he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. The Knight was part of L.O.G.’s league, an obvious conflict of companionships and oaths. He looked up at Logan, and said nothing.
The unnerving silence from his usually snarky nemesis spoke plenty, Logan could tell his nonthreatening companion had been completely and utterly broken.
Justice behind bars for such a heinous act would not suffice for the rage Logan felt. And L.O.G. had a sneaking suspicion he knew just where he needed to begin.
“Data. Call Roman.”

It's Morphin Time! (Power Rangers review)
spoilers for Power Rangers (2017)
side note: I only watched a few episodes as a kid so I’m not going to pick up on inside jokes/won’t be pointing out comparisons. // I’m white and not autistic so when taking about representation keep that in mind  // cw (lite): rape culture, suicide
much more enjoyable than the original breakfast club.
property damage
that was... a lot
and I’m not even referring to the big battle at the end; arguably they could have played it differently (and I mean that on both a watsonian and a doylist perspective) but Big Boss Battle, I give those passes, (superhero) movies tend to think they need them. (and are only so-so wrong.) But before that (and superpowers in general) we have: a damaged school/cow, a car chase at the school, a car accident, a mine blasting, a car chase at the mine, and a car-meets-train accident.
and while we see, yanno, happy survivors at the end, I’m wondering if they are going to address the major damage done to the town.
good thing they have masks. and knew to ditch out of there while still in celebration mode.
this was small town america, dependent on mining and fishing. (which - interesting choice of location because it made the movie very compacted, and it also stressed a lot of the push-pull of teenagers and their struggles. this should definitely become a theme as the franchise goes on - the desire to leave with the duty to stay and protect)
I know! use all that fucking spent gold Rita left behind!
I mean the jewelry store can at least provide receipts but what’s the mine gonna say? “yeah, that chunk of arm definitely came from Shaft 37″
speaking of - they are so damn reckless!
so reckless!
and I mean it’s kind of great because a) how fitting for teenagers in general, like this movie is 95% of the time going “they are teenagers!” (with all the middle finger to mortality and boneheadedness and earnestness and finding your place/friends/family that comes with it), and b) because it comes in various forms to fit the specific characters well, and c) its great tactic for skipping over the whole “wtf superpower freakout”
but also - thank bob they got some magic healing stones cause they all almost die a few times before the whole superhero gig even kicks in. that car chase at the mine (both the recklessness and the loyalty of helping each other) is an excellent establishing intro to them cause wtf power rangers
like arguably the least reckless is Billy, who is introduced as bribing a kid to drive him over so he can blow up a mine in the growing dark that almost kills another kid (how did Trini survive that fall with barely a bruise? magic). and he’s the LEAST reckless.
the real question - did he just happen to learn how to disable the tracker before this, has he actually done this before, or did he learn how before Jason came over that night?
but I say least reckless because the majority of his recklessness comes from love/loyalty - the mine visits originally for his dad, everything else for his friends
but we have Zack - taking care of a terminal ill parent and so his things are about pushing limits, that more, more, more (or out, out, out) feeling, being wild, flirting with that “death wish” - because that’s a way to act out his fear, that’s a way to be out of control in a controlled way (he can’t control that, but he can control this), that’s a way to say fuck you to death, that’s just part of his personality of ‘I’m gonna touch it’
100% he is the person who presses the red button that says ‘do not press’
also its funny that he just hangs around the mine; full assumption on my part but it fits if his mom got sick from the mine, and he - to avoid finding out if she dies during the night, if the last of his family is gone - visits the root of it
Jason: I think there’s arguably a few ways of looking at it:
the growing pressure of familial/town obligations of being the golden boy are too much, and he‘s acting out to blow off steam
how he touches his knee made me wonder if he was getting an injury, and (sub)consciously wanted to get out of playing more football, either because he’s afraid of damaging it more or because he thinks it’s better to get kicked off on purpose than have it fail him/have to leave for something he can’t control
small town football stars are the weirdest mix of celebrity/adoration* and teenager, and some people don’t handle that well and turn to other means to get that attention, and adrenaline
* adoration that is temporary and/or dependent on their skills
some combo of the above
but anyway he’s “dumb stunts” reckless, and brings other people (and cows) into it, and his arc as leader means figuring out a balance for that, bringing them to necessary danger but not getting them killed
Trini is “outsider” - and the movie supplemented that with actual queerness (more on that below); like she runs from the group, she questions whats really bringing them together (are we friends?), Rita pinpoints that as her weakness, her character arc/turning point is when she immediately tells the others. and her recklessness is towards the self, esp her body - like she trespasses into the mine to practice stretches/meditation, the train run (IIRC she’s the one whose like “eh, hope we make it”), she uses her powers to get away (did she know she could make that jump before she did it because her powers became apparent in less the ‘destructive of an item’ way and more like Zack’s in which it was pushing physics?)
I think its arguable she’s had issues with drugs. like the movie stresses three years for her (her growing distance/quiet coming with her sexuality questioning), and her mom just happens to have a pee cup on standby? that’s a long time period to keep testing a kid who never shows up as positive. I mean maybe her mom’s just reacting in more and more extreme measures and this is the latest version... also the way her dad intercedes with her mom’s questions, I wonder if that’s his natural role in the family or if that came out of therapy.
I really don’t think she’s presented as suicidal in the film, but I think there’s an underlining implication that can be read where AU this superpower thing didn’t happen she goes in that direction (she is isolated by her “other” status within her family, by being the new kid at school, and so on)
Kimberly is self-destructive; its thoughtlessness and impulsiveness (and meanness) coming out to swallow her and take who she can with her. cutting her hair, diving at night at the quarry, her “revenge porn” (and way more on that below), even breaking into Jason’s room to tell him about why she was in detention
there’s no “is it superpowers??????” which I immensely appreciate; it’s “something weird is happening and we need to figure out what.”
they killed Billy. and yeah, happy they bought him back, but they still killed him.
and since I hadn’t actually watched the trailer all the way through, and I feel like a Power Ranger died in the original series (no clue if that’s accurate), and Billy’s Black and on the spectrum, yeah, I thought it was going to last.
his death was used for Zordon, Jason, and Kim’s character arc
I understand it was so each of the other four could carry him together, but the Jesus pose is still in way too many superhero and/or teenage protagonist movies
yeah yeah he was the heart of the team I get it; still could have done it without his death. or frankly Jason works, since he’s the leader (and its interesting that the heart of the group and the leader of the group are two different people) and everyone pulls together for the leader. but again, no death works
it made no sense that she killed him and left the other four alive. also I’m assuming she was powering the ropes to keep them in place but did it completely drain them of power? cause as we saw earlier, they can breathe underwater
David Christopher Bell pointed out that since The Dark Knight, villains need to a) not just kill the heroes but break their spirits and b) get caught as part of the master plan. and while the latter is the “reason” behind the scene - she needs to find the location, she somehow knows Billy knows (like she somehow knew Trini felt like an outsider) - the former ended up feeling like the motive for the scene.
actually she hits a couple more on the list - we don’t actually know her motive for turning (beyond “feeling like an outsider”) and the narrative treats her like she’s “unhinged” for no reason.
weirdly Zordon is not part of her motive? like him being “alive” is barely a sidenote to her
representation
well done Black Autistic Hero! like Billy uses the actual term (which is already more than a lot of characters do), he exhibits behaviors of it (speech patterns, special interests, joke recognition, touching, stimming, etc), and he’s a friggin hero (and no one questions his capability to be one)
so Jason is the main; he has more screen time, his emotional arc is devoted the most space, he & his are the the inciting incident - a. his introduction into detention is the opening change that starts the story and b. his dad brings Rita out of the water (though maybe she could only be brought out after the gems are found?) - and he’s the leader of the team. however, Billy serves as the heart of the team, and the movie (usually through Jason, non-negatively) points out several times that he is behind finding the gems, and he’s the one who brings Jason to the mine. so Jason is the main but if they had tweaked the script a little Billy would have been.
Zack is not stereotypical/usual. (first off he’s played by an actual Asian actor, ba dum tss). but he’s poor, small family, while he wasn’t given a romance he didn’t come across as desexualized, he exchanged just pure slugging it out punches with Jason (instead of the “all (East) Asian (men) know martial arts” trope), he’s not nerdy or an airhead (the two extremes for school tropes), he loves his mom and outside of caretaking we also see them enjoy each other (high five over their chess game), he’s super f-ing reckless (let me just jump on this speeding car wtf Zack you didn’t know you had powers at that point), when established they speak Chinese together they don’t suddenly switch to (accented) English because that’s too many subtitles for an American audience
Trini: queer Mexican girl. like, I’ve seen the arguments for both sides of this - on the one end: she’s questioning (and feels so alone in it) so it fits she doesn’t have a label for herself, and on the other there’s been a growing trend of movies getting points for the tiniest overt queerness. because this is an introduction into a franchise and she’s a main character and the crew/cast are vocal about it and while she didn’t have a label it was connected to her arc (outsider status/isolation -> group friendship), I felt more on the ok end of it, though I would have definitely liked at least a little more vocalization. And this is definitely dependent on how they deal with it going forward, and I also agree with people who think it was not enough, especially since they chose to have her character in the early stages of questioning her identity and while that’s a legitimate storyline it’s not the only one.
a really good solution would have been to have Zack say he’s pan or bi.
more queer rep always
like, did you watch him? (flirting mode towards everyone: activated)
it means we see someone with a labeled identity and someone questioning, and it enriches the scene between them, and it gives more weight/overtness to her sexuality (aka the movie itself isn’t shying away from labels, this specific character is cause she’s still figuring it out)
the start of queering them all. all of them.
Kim is played by a biracial (Indian & white) actress. I can’t really speak to how that fits into the romance trope - she’s not white (the “Girlfriend Role” works differently for WOC), but Asian women are hypersexualized (the gratuitous bra shot, with Jason looking on without her knowledge)... basically I’m not familiar with how Indian women specifically fit into this conversation and it’s really not my place to say. I personally felt they erred too much on the romance for her, because the scenes with her and Jason together felt much more tied to Jason‘s arc* than hers or both of theirs, and she felt sexualized in the movie in a way the rest of them didn’t, so overall I wish they kept it a little more subtle than they did. but again not my judgement to make in terms of representation.
* the hallway walk, the quarry scenes... those feel like the Manic Pixie Girl/Girlfriend Role (”let’s run, right now”) and since her arc was a little less clear than the others it feels like the problem with that stems from the romance, even if it didn’t necessarily.
However let’s talk about her backstory, the biggest twist in a movie I’ve seen in years.
raise your hand if you thought she was getting the ‘sexually assaulted and fought him off and former friends/mean girls attack her for being a slut’ story. *raises hand* and instead she leaked her friend’s nude to a dude with a sex-shaming comment (who spread it to the whole school and/or besides to the dude Kim sent it to the school). PLOT TWIST.
except lemme say - this is a huge violation. HUGE. leaking nudes is not just a mistake or a bad choice, its a violation and it affects the leaked person for the rest of their life and its a well deserved criminal offense. (at least Jason’s ankle monitor suggests there’s some kind of police punishment that came with the huge amounts of damage he did - though talk about a light sentence good thing you’re a football player/white dude - but her punishment is just detention?) and I definitely need a lot more on the redemption arc beyond ‘stops being a mean girl who doesn’t recognize her actions for as damaging as they are until the consequences are shoved into her face’, esp because she’s only partly sorry. She’s sorry about what she did, yes, I believe that, but there’s also several instances (like when their cafeteria dishes melt, or the car gets smashed) where she smirks when they get in trouble. (That she’s the victim in this situation.) And with that, the narrative smirks at them too, because they’re mean girls and they cut her out; except she’s in the wrong! she completely violated Elizabeth! they’re allowed to be petty/mean back to her! It’s implied she basically leaked the nude because ‘why not,’ she deserves to get some shitty treatment back at her!
one of the main rules was “don’t use your powers for personal gain.” IDK if this is going to come up in the franchise, but if it does I’m assuming - if it’s not the whole group -  it’s going to be either her or Zack. Zack because of his sick mom (external force), her because of her personality (internal force).
eta: in a convo with clari-clyde she pointed out that Jason tells her she’s not a bad person when yeah, she was a bad person. ("i would‘ve liked it better if jason said, you chose to be a bad person, but you can also choose to be a good person. you can make poor bad choices, building on that bad choice. or you can start making good choices, and start transforming yourself.”) and I agree.   Kim didn’t do a mean thing, she is a mean person (the photos just being the latest and a REALLY BIG DEAL), and the narrative both understands that weight (her self-hatred/angst is about it) while treating it as less damaging than it is (how it somewhat tries to victimize her, and by virtue of getting the stone/superpowers.) once we learn Kim’s backstory her power walk (after cutting her hair) back into detention takes on new meaning, and not in a good way; she’s apologetic in the scene with Jason, but we don’t really see evidence of that in her treatment of her actual victims. (its the common redemption arc of tv white dudes - the idea that feeling bad is enough to redeem them, as opposed to them actually doing something to redeem themselves.) and one of the reasons her arc fell a little flat to me is because her backstory (leaked nude) and her end result (being a power ranger) are really not connected, both in context and through the group. everyone else’s arc was interwoven into them becoming a group, while her arc was interwoven with Jason only.
and in addition to that, Jason “forgiving her” gets tied back into their romantic undertones (removed kiss or not), so that it comes across more as “I like you, therefore you are not a bad person,” instead of acknowledging she was actually a bad person, but she can make actual steps into changing that.
Zordon & Alpha 5 downloaded the English matrix and can converse fine but “teenagers” is the one word to throw them off. which a) suggests Zordon and his group/people don’t distinguish that grouping - which makes sense, the term is only like a 100yrs old, but more importantly b) is beautiful shot at Marvel. I mean, I don’t know if that’s why they did it, but after that Civil War nonsense I’m reading it as one anyway. feel free to join me.
music - a little uneven. like for the majority of the film it was unobtrusive, with “HandClap” during the training montage brought into the narrative with Billy and Alpha 5 clapping, and then at the end there was the tv theme song (fair enough) but it cut off quick, as did the other (loud) song during those scenes too, and the one after the other nature of it was abrupt sounding.
I liked the training montage.
ok, so Jason can fight, we see that (dodge the bully’s fist), plus he’s an athlete. and Kim is an ex-cheerleader (and apparently recreational diver), aka an athlete. (athletes in football and cheerleading tend to have: body strength, quick pattern recognition, inclined towards multitasking & teamwork, can take a damn hit, etc.) we see Trini doing a stretch routine and taking out Zack in the pit and both she and Zack are suggested to have some parkouring. Billy is probably the least experienced, esp when it comes to fighting (and notable he’s the one that gets the basic boxing/punching routine), but he runs around a mine and like the others seems to be a good swimmer. so it comes across as less unbelievable that they can pick this up, esp because for the most part their fighting strategy is to hit the dirt monsters until they fall apart and we see them practicing (over and over again) the specific move that took Rita down. (also I was literally thinking ‘what, they can suddenly move as one with no training’ and then the final evolution of their robot trips. I’ll give the movie some leeway on how they can control the dino bots so well - plus handwavy they’re plugged in and figured it out - because of that trip.)
they also show injuries.
ok except for Kim and Jason’s shirtless scene, the camera (and clothing department) treated them like teenagers, like they shouldn’t be needlessly sexualized for (adult) audiences. it’s fucked up that this is special enough to note, but its definitely special enough to note. (and they still did the ‘guy looks at half-naked woman without her permission’ thing, which is not ok, yes not even to the same girl who leaked the nudes.) there was Rita - she shows more skin the “prettier” she gets, her outfit at the jewelry store was esp “where did she get this?” - but at least she wasn’t playing a teenager. (and I don’t remember her actions towards them being sexualized, but I may just not be remembering it. eta: she definitely does have the sexualized vibe going with her adult victims though.
it was a fair job with the product placement and shoutouts (like Bumblebee and Ironman/Spiderman - those are franchises it can be assumed their audiences know).
like Jason, you fucked over your football scholarship/college options, your family probably has to pay for the school damages, you have a police (though possibly just juvenile) record... they’re allowed to question your decisions. and your dad still ends up giving you a chance to have a car again. (after you smashed two in less than a month.)
this was a mix of parental awareness and not. like Billy’s mom* is there greeting (and noticing the school social group differences) at the door, but not that the missing (smashed up) van may be his fault. Trini’s parents are aware if ineffectual/ridiculous. we just get a glimpse of Jason’s mom and sister but we spend time on his relationship with his dad (whose paying attention to his kid and tries to rescue him), but he still sneaks out of his house (with ankle bracelet) and is gone past his curfew at least twice, if not every day of training. Zack’s mom is trying to keep track (checking if he’s going to school) but (assumed) doesn’t know he sometimes spends nights away from home (assumed after giving her her pills.) unless I’m totally blanking, we don’t know about Kim’s family, though she goes swimming at the quarry at night and cuts her hair etc without recognition. and they all spend at least one night (though is bonfire night and them meeting at the bleachers the same night?) away from home. and they all spend almost two weeks coming home with bruises/etc.
* ok I thought he said both parents died in the car accident when he first tells Jason but then later he just talks about his dead dad so was that his mom or his guardian? (I’m trying to remember if he shouted ‘her name’s Trini’ with a relationship term at the end.)
they had some really great moments but: Trini and Kim fighting over the last bite. Jason slapping the bully (that was so fucking cutting.) Billy on the spaceship. Zack and his mom hanging out over chess. Trini with her brothers. etc etc.
so the time jumps - the gems keep them alive and put them to bed, but they don’t do things like fix the van.
I’m so glad Trini immediately tells the group about Rita’s deal, and the narrative doesn’t even try to have some possible betrayal shit, and Jason’s speech (we suck, but we should do this anyways) was a good choice
all the death and injuries are close up, within the group. even with big battle the ‘helpless citizen’ was shown through Jason’s dad. the group itself receives extensive (if sometimes recklessly self-inflicted) damage.
boob armor. (Trini’s brothers could have guessed Yellow was a girl considering that.)
the actors did a good job, esp Billy’s
??? I always forget obvious stuff when I do these.
overall, I liked the movie more than I thought I would (ok not saying too much), and it had some great moments, but Billy’s death esp was cheap, there was some incongruent scenes that affected the rest/tone of the film, and the final fighting battles - esp in the dino bots (though let’s be real: I want one) - was a little ridiculous. but the movie did a good introduction, and it felt like it recognized teenagers in all their stupidity and grace, and I’ll definitely give the next one in the franchise a try.

tss heroes and villains au
this is the summary of my tss heroes and villains au!
(cw -> implied kidnapping, c-ptsd, child abuse, extreme manipulation, torture, physical abuse, emotional abuse, violence, exploitation of children)
in this world, a small percentage of people are born with or discover a magical superpower, such as flight, teleportation, element manipulation, and these people usually become either heroes or villains. there are many hero academies, places that teach children with powers how to become heroes that protect their cities from villains.
but in ember city, this academy is very corrupt.
patton parsons, otherwise known as paw-ton, is the resident hero of the city, a very famous hero who defeats villains regularly and saves civilians from danger. he's known as being a very kind, comforting person who always does the right thing. he is also the headmaster of the hero academy in ember city, and he teaches children how to become heroes just like him.
his power? he can artificially make people feel emotions. he can make anyone feel anything, happiness, sadness, fear, anger, and even pain.
see where things can get a little scary?
anyway, enter janus, a sixteen year old kid with the power to create sensory illusions. he can make people hallucinate that there are people or things that aren't actually there. but he hates the hero academy because patton's rules are strict, and he basically abuses his students into obeying his every whim, even when they are harmful. after all, patton only cares about the greater good, defending the innocent. so if a hero child gets hurt in exchange for the safety of a civilian, then he's done his job right.
resenting this, janus runs away and becomes a villain, seeking to destroy the hero academy from the ground up.
fast forward about fifteen years, and patton has another student to replace janus. a young boy named roman who wasn't born with powers, but found a magical golden gauntlet that has fused to his hand, and allows him to teleport short distances and blast fireballs. roman wants to be a hero more than anything, so it's a good thing patton saved him when he was a baby from dying on the streets, and raised him as his own adoptive nephew, becoming a hero academy student. patton punishes roman harshly because though he has drive, the poor kid is horrible at being a hero, having no control over his powers and a general lack of common sense.
but when janus ends up running into roman while trying to pull a heist, he sees his own reflection in the eyes of this tired, abused young teen, and he strikes a deal with patton: if he gets to take roman out of the academy and raise him as his own, he'll give patton as much money as he wants, and if he fails to provide the amount patton wants, then patton can take JANUS back to the academy and become his prisoner.
patton is thrilled with this. not only does he get to get rid of one of his worst students, but he also gets the chance of having janus back in his clutches.
roman is a sweet little kid, but he's clearly very conditioned, only caring about helping other people, being a good hero, clearly things that patton drilled into him with years of harsh punishments. but the two become very close very quickly, as they realize that in this twisted world that sees patton as a perfect good guy, they're the only ones who truly understand each other.
but what if janus fails to get the money to patton? and how much does he sacrifice to make sure that roman is safe from harm forever?
there's more lore than this, but this is all i really want to discuss in one post because it's already a lot. let me know what you think!! it's one of my favorite aus of all time, and i can't wait to write about this.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Chapter 17
Summary: Remus and Roman’s story, their life as heroes, and their downfall to Roman becoming the Kraken to destroy Remus
⚠ Warnings: Death Mentioned, Violence
_______________________________
Remus quickly signed a piece of paper then folded it up putting it under the pen. He smirked, tossing a pen over at Roman.
Roman quickly caught it from the air, pulling the paper free and unfolding it before writing his elegant signature on it.
“Woo!” Remus laughed, punching the air happily.
Roman grinned back, “We’re in this together, bro.”
“Hell yeah we are!” Remus ran over crushing Roman in a hug.
Roman gasped laughing before hugging Remus back.
Roman let go and slipped the paper under a little hole in the glass in front of them.
“Welcome to the agency.” a voice said from behind the glass.
They were 16 at the time, the youngest age you could be when applying for the hero agency. They both saw it as the best day of their lives… at one point. Even so, the happiness didn’t last forever. At times, the memory had been thought back on with regret from both sides. But they did it together, how they always thought they’d be.
______________________________
The City’s Royalty were on the scene, Prince and Duke.
Prince smirked, stepping forward towards their villain of the week, his red cape flowing with the wind. His golden mask is intricately woven with red jewels hanging down from the bottom of it with a crown at the top. His outfit a white tailcoat with a red sash and black pants, an outfit fit for a prince.
Duke stepped forward at his side, “Ready?” His outfit, similar to Roman’s but in black and green, his mask silver with an octopus in the details of the crown in his mask.
They were 18 at the time and had been doing it for 2 years, determined to never lose… and they hadn’t.
The Villain laughed holding up a car, “Awww the little royals are here to stop me? How pathetic.”
Roman glared letting the concrete from the road flow up, forming a sword in his hand. “We’ll see who is pathetic.”
Remus started running at the villain with a shield encasing his arm. He rammed it into them.
The villain fell back stumbling slightly.
Roman ran in slashing with his sword at the villain.
Remus tossed over his shield to Roman.
Roman caught it and held the villain down with the sword threateningly close.
Remus formed a chain pulling it out of the street wrapping it around the villain.
They were a good team, working together perfectly. They would always be in it together.
Until they didn’t
 ______________________________
They were both 22, that was when everything started crumbling. They had been 6 years as heroes, sharing the spotlight, and saving the city.
Though sharing wasn’t always enough.
Roman stood on the steps of the hero facility talking to citizens and signing his autograph… everyone loved him, and he loved it.
Remus sat in their office inside looking down watching his brother absorbed in the fame… slowly pulling them apart. Remus looked down at his phone reading a recent article from a couple cities over… a hero Thunder Shade, had fallen. Dozens died at his hands and he then disappeared… He was nothing more than a villain now. Remus shook his head, he never realized how close they were to losing it all.
Roman waved to everyone smiling before going back inside the building, everything was perfect.
__________________________
Everything was going to hell… and it had been so quick… It hadn't even been 6 months. But everything was crumbling around them.
Remus glared at Roman across the room.
Roman rolled his eyes sighing and got up, “What’s wrong with you, it was nothing.”
“You destroyed a whole building! People lost their homes!”
“So! They’re still alive!”
“You just don’t understand do you!” Remus yelled.”
“Oh what? That this is a stupid argument in the first place? I get that completely.” Roman put up a hand, shaking his head and starting to leave.
“Dad would be disappointed seeing how far you’ve fallen.”
“You… don’t bring up father. Especially when what happened to him was your fault!” Roman replied, turning around and glaring at Remus. “Now I have to go, my fans are waiting for me.” He growled leaving the room.
Remus sighed looking outside, rain pounded down against the window… Remus fixed his outfit, took the cloak off and grabbed his mask making sure to grab the detachable bottom part that covered the lower part of his face. He put it on before walking out accepting an emergency that was just called in.
Remus left, alone…
_______________________
Only 3 months passed before everything abruptly ended.
They had both been distracted, both by different things.
A villain had suddenly attacked in the middle of a city event, thousands attending…many not making it home. Not that it was a significant loss to the city… nobody noticed or cared.
Roman smiled at the crowd while fighting off the attacks, putting on a show and protecting the citizens, what he always did best.
Remus went straight in against the villain, yelling for the people to evacuate while he tried holding off the attacks by using the ground to encase the villain.
The people who escaped took videos of it all… but everyone focused on Remus, focused on him running in selflessly and holding off the villain alone while roman was within the crowd holding off attacks… people around him becoming harmed by the proximity.
They ignored roman.
Roman… couldn’t take it. He couldn’t take the praise to the brother he’d grown to hate, to resent over the years… the brother he blamed for their father’s death… for their mother leaving.
He snapped.
After the fight was over Roman tried to talk to the citizens, but everyone wanted to thank Remus… they all liked Remus more.
Roman glared across the city square at Remus… but it was ok, he’d get back at him. People wouldn’t look up to him for long… soon Remus would fall, his reputation as the duke would burn.
_____________________
When they both were 23, Roman had disappeared. Remus looked for him to no avail, till he started hearing reports of the kraken, a villain terrorizing cities in a costume eerily like his… all except for the chrome mask hiding the villain’s whole face.
But Remus already knew who it was.
He went to the city quickly but as soon as he got there Roman had already managed to leave.
So Remus called for help, a bounty hunter he had heard of. He hired them to catch his identity thief and to report back… and to call him when they were close.
All Remus could do was hope to get his Roman back.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Chapter 17 Chapter 18 Chapter 19
Summary:  Virgil, Logan, Remus, and Serpent go to confront Roman... though nothing goes according to plan.
Warnings: Death, Blood/Gore, Injury, Murder
_________________________________
Everything had been figured out, they were all ready… even everyone was filled with a bit of hesitation.
Virgil walked down the street alone wearing his old superhero suit. Everyone had agreed it was time for the phantom to leave and Thunder Shade was going to come back anew to save those who turned their back on him.
“Everything looks ok out there?” Logan’s voice crackled through Virgil’s earpiece.
“Sadly yes, I haven’t seen any signs of him out.”
“It will be ok, he will come out soon enough. Remus and Serpent are also keeping watch for him.”
“Alright.” Virgil nodded and kept walking, his arms rested around a staff that was over his shoulders. Before they all split up Logan gave it to him saying he should have something better than just knives.
Just as Virgil was about to take another step the ground started caving in below him, pulling him under. The pavement became liquified.
“He found me!” Virgil yelled, fighting to pull himself out quickly. He still had no clue where Roman was.
Remus and Serpent came running from their hiding spots down the street.
Remus ran over before dropping to a slide on the ground. He put his hands down fighting Roman’s control for a moment before Virgil was freed.
Virgil pulled himself out of the ground and surrounded himself in shadows. “Do you know where he is?”
“No!” Serpent called out.
Remus shook his head looking around the area, Roman had to be somewhere nearby.
Logan looked down on the group from the top of a nearby building waiting until it was his cue to come.
Roman smirked walking up behind him, “well, well, well… I didn’t expect to find my dear roommate here.”
Logan turned around, staring at him in surprise, “what are you?”
“Oh now's not the time for questions, starlight.” Roman sighed with a glare, “I saw you found my brother… I don't think that will stop me. Even if he’s here I am still able to smear his name because of all the shit he put me through.”
Logan shook his head. “No, it’s time that you stopped,” Logan told him seriously.
“Oh really?”
“Yes.” Logan nodded, taking a step back. His legs hitting the raised ledge of the roof before he took another step to get up onto it, still facing Roman
“You think that will stop me?”
“It’s not supposed to.” Logan replied, opening his book pulling a dragon out of it as he leaned back, falling from the roof and plummeting to the ground.
Virgil sighed, “Logan come in, Roman is around here somewhere,” he said into the mic.
No response.
Virgil shook his head about to call out again before he heard a roar from up above. Virgil looked up seeing the large dragon overtake the sky and Logan… falling.
Virgil ran quickly sending his shadows up, circling them around Logan. They weren’t going to be able to stop him. Taking a deep breath Virgil shook his head, he had no other choice… but this was the last thing he wanted to do.
Virgil opened up a portal underneath Logan and underneath himself, falling into the darkness as Logan did… he wasn’t risking losing him to the abyss.
Virgil looked up relieved seeing Logan and grabbed him, he wasn’t letting go, not easily at least.
Logan leaned into his touch taking a deep breath, “I knew you’d get me…” He whispered.
Virgil nodded, opening a portal below them into an alley nearby the fight.
Logan let go of Virgil once they were outside, “We should get back to helping them.”
Virgil nodded, “Yeah… yeah…” He nodded, taking a deep breath. He ran out of the alley to where Serpent and Remus were.
Roman stood up upon the top of a building still, trying to fend off Logan’s dragon, leaving him seemingly distracted for now.
Though they were wrong…
Roman walked up behind the group smirking. “You thought you could fool me that easily?” He sneered at the group.
Virgil pushed Logan to behind him as soon as he saw Roman.
Their plan was going to shit.
“Now, now, Phantom, get out of the way, this isn’t about you anymore.” He growled sending a spike of pavement out at Virgil quickly stabbing him in the side.
Virgil didn’t even have time to react before the sharp pain invaded his senses. He glared at Roman and looked down at himself putting a hand lightly where the pavement was protruding out of him.
Roman flicked his wrist ripping the pavement from virgil and watched him fall to the ground before walking closer, going towards his brother. “Well hello there.”
“Why!” Remus growled, taking a step closer to roman.
“Because you already ruined everything for me.”
Logan kneeled by Virgil’s side putting pressure on his wound. “Stay awake.” He whispered looking back at Roman and remus.
Roman shrugged, “I just wanted to return the favor honestly.”
Remus nodded, “Well then I’m sorry for this.” He said manipulating the pavement below them to go at Roman.
Roman laughed, stopping it before it reached him. “It’s funny you’d think that would work.” He said manipulating it to surround remus.
Remus fought back, holding some of it at bay trying to keep it away. He just needed to stall… “I didn’t think it would work.”
“Oh, so you’re dumb as always?”
“No… but I don’t have anything left to lose.” Remus said letting go of his say on the pavement.
Roman took the opportunity and crushed Remus within the pavement as a searing pain shot through his back like it was being torn apart.
Roman dropped Remus and turned away to see a serpent standing there shadows surrounding him, dripping with blood.
Janus waved with a slight smile as he sent the shadows into roman tearing him apart from inside out with a vicious brutality. He didn’t have much left to lose either, this was a favor to the world, murdering this bastard.
Roman fell to the ground breathless and motionless after moments, the shadows retracted away and disappeared.
Janus took a deep breath stepping over the body over to Remus.
Remus pulled the pavement away from himself and coughed slightly, “I’m fine, I’ll be fine… just a crushed rib or two… wait, how is Phantom?” he asked, pulling himself out quicker looking back over to Logan and Virgil.
Logan put a hand on Virgil’s cheek, “It’ll be ok, we’ll get you healed,” he whispered.
Virgil nodded and coughed some blood up, “I know,” he whispered back. He winced, forcing himself to sit up and put a hand on Logan’s cheek, “I know.”
“Hey! You need to lay back down, you’ll hurt yourself more.” Logan rambled before he suddenly felt the feeling of lips against his own.
Virgil put a hand behind Logan's head kissing him gently, “Thank you.”
Logan nodded, tearing up, “Don’t make it sound like goodbye.”
“No… it’s not.” he said, letting Logan lay him back down on the ground. The world faded around him slowly as he succumbed to the pain and let himself pass out for now.
Logan would make it all better… Starlight would save him just like he had saved him before.

Summary: Virgil’s “Heroic” backstory and origin story of his rise to villainy. Logan comes to realizations about himself and them facing Kraken Warnings: Death, Murder, Explosions
Note: Here’s a little treat, two updates in the span of 24 hours!? Surprising! And there are only so many fucking ways I could describe and say darkness, and I was running out
_____________________
Thunder Shade sat on the roof of a tall building looking down when he suddenly heard an explosion down the street. He was instantly on his feet. He jumped onto the ledge and crossed his arms over his chest, closing his eyes before letting himself fall off the roof. He could feel the instant change when he fell into the shadows, it was colder… quieter… and lonely. But it always felt so peaceful, and comfortable.
He let himself on the sidewalk across from the building looking up at it partially on fire. But the most concerning part, a whole floor had been blown up… and the floors above were in critical condition. The building was going to come down. He needed to get in there, he needed to help them. There were no sirens, anywhere, not even approaching…
Thunder Shade quickly ran inside and pulled a fire alarm hoping that everyone who was able to evacuate instantly.
He walked himself into the shadows bringing him to the upper floors. “Hello! Anyone there?” He screamed running around the floors. He ran down the stairs and finally found people all near the stairs on the second to last floor before the one that was blown out.
One person ran over crying when they saw him… all of them were terrified.
“I… I could help you all out of here!” Thunder Shade told them just as the floor started to shake, “We have to go quickly!” He opened a portal of shadows and gestured for them all to run in. One person stood staring into it terrified. He went over and took their hand, “It’s safe.” He said before stepping through with them.
He traveled through the shadows and watched the people all falling through with them…. And being swallowed by the darkness. They screamed out only for the void to silence them as they disappeared. Virgil held tighter to the person in his arms and they were brought out onto the sidewalk near the building.
The person instantly pulled away terrified, “You… Murderer!”
He shook his head, stepping away, “No…. I…”
That was when the building started giving way, unable to handle its own weight as the top part succumbed to gravity, it began to fall.
Thunder Shade turned quickly and took a deep breath looking around, he couldn’t let it destroy the surrounding buildings or kill anyone… he didn’t even know if he could do it. He ran underneath it before raising his arms up. Slowly he opened up the sky above him into darkness, slowly making it grow. The top of the building slowly fell into it and disappeared into the void.
People screamed in fear.
The emergency services only then arriving.
Thunder Shade stood strong trying not to succumb to the pressure of the darkness and kept it opened a bit longer to swallow the building.
But… nobody saw him as a hero. Dozens of people were unaccounted for, falling victim to his darkness. They feared him, and such a show of power to get rid of a building in thin air, to create a… portal, with the ability to just get rid of something so large.
Everyone stared at him…
A Villain.
He was no longer the city’s hero, but now the city’s most feared villain. Now he wasn’t a savior of the people, but a murderer of many.
Thunder Shade had Fallen.
And from the darkness… slowly Phantom began to rise after that moment. The moment the citizens turned on him and only saw him for a murderer and a threat because of the power he possessed.
Though… he too feared himself… feared his own power… feared the darkness. For if it could take all those people, couldn’t it simply take him too? But as most things do, the fear faded into memory.
_____________
Virgil sat next to Logan explaining that day… his ‘darkest day’ and the day everything essentially went to shit.
Logan sat there in surprise, he… he had never heard about any of this. But why would he have? It wasn’t like the citizens went around parading their ex hero when he came to town. They simply accepted him.
But… if he was to make a great show of his power like Virgil had… they could simply turn on him in an instant.
The line between good and bad was more than blurred… it simply wasn’t there. The decision was just made on the spot by people with bias from emotional situations.
If things went bad when they confronted Kraken… the city’s hero Starlight could so easily fall from public opinion and become a threat to their wellbeing.
They needed to find out how they could face the Kraken without becoming this society’s most feared individuals.
Logan needed to find out more about Kraken first, so then they could plan to take him down.

Summary: Virgil takes Logan away and fucking communication happens Warnings: Talk of killing and death
_______________________________________________________
Virgil held Logan’s hand as he pulled him into the shadows. Logan took a deep breath following him, he instantly moved and held onto Virgil, practically hugging him as the darkness surrounded them everywhere. Virgil wrapped his arms around Logan and held him close, not wanting to lose him to the shadows. He watched Logan quietly as they fell, everything around them void of any light at all. Logan sighed, closing his eyes, thinking of a place he knew of… it was far… It was safe. He hoped at least. Hoped it was safe enough.
Everything seemed so bright when they stepped out. Slowly their eyes adjusted though, to the light of the rising sun. Virgil looked around seeing that they were surrounded… surrounded by trees, in the center of some forest. “I used to come here to get away.” Logan said softly, letting go of Virgil. “We’re far from the city… there's no cell service here… it’s safe.” He said and nodded to Virgil. “You’re safe.” Virgil sighed and slowly sunk to the ground, sitting down on the grass. “This… It's peaceful. Are you sure we’re safe-” “Shh, you don’t need to worry.” Logan replied sitting next to him. “Now tell me everything.” Virgil nodded and went quiet for a few minutes. He knew he couldn’t keep Logan in the dark forever, he had to tell him… he wanted to tell him. He took a while before finally mumbling “He’s… going to kill you.” He didn’t look at Logan as he spoke, just staring at the ground. He knew he was slowly breaking down, after keeping it in, after dealing with such fear for speaking out. He was starting to crumble. “What?” Logan asked looking at Virgil surprised, “Why-” Virgil took a deep breath and glanced at Logan before he broke, letting everything out. “He’s going to kill everyone… he doesn’t care. He just wants a spotlight, and to have no competition. Serpent is a bounty hunter and has been after him.” Virgil continued and took a deep breath. “He… he broke into my home! He threatened my family, he was going to kill them if I didn’t kill the people he told me to… though they’re still not safe. I know he won’t keep a promise, he already made it clear he’ll harm them no matter what. He’ll even harm you. He’s going to kill me soon. But I need to make sure my family, that they’re safe! I can’t let him hurt them!” Logan nodded softly and rubbed his arm, “So we’ll make sure they’re safe.” “What! No! He’ll kill you too! Don’t you understand?” Virgil asked, and looked at Logan, tears rolling down his cheeks. “He’ll probably kill you too… you don’t need to go through this all alone.” Logan replied, “I’d like to talk more to serpent, and maybe research more into Kraken. But I am going to be helping you.” Virgil stared and shook his head, “No you can’t… I can’t have you getting involved! You’ll get hurt, and… I’d be the reason.” Logan moved and hugged him, “I’m helping… I protect this city, so I’m helping you get rid of him.” “Fine…” Virgil nodded, giving up and rested his head on Logan’s shoulder. “We have to stop him from destroying the city… from taking everything good away.” Virgil whispered. Logan rubbed his back nodding, “For a villain… you care quite a bit for the city and everyone.” “You know… I wasn’t always…right? I wasn’t always Phantom.” Virgil replied, pulling away and staring at Logan. “Then… how did you become Phantom?” Logan asked, he had never really realized. He thought that Virgil was always the city’s “villain” though Virgil just wasn’t a really bad or evil one. Just against the politics of the city, against how things were running, just more trying to send a message through destruction. Sure it made a bit of sense he didn’t want the city to be destroyed because he lived there… but he cared about it and the people. But… if he hadn’t always been Phantom… what brought him to this point. Logan could tell that committing murder had disturbed him… but the 50… they weren’t the best of people just moderately influential and majorly problematic. But he still had been disturbed by the act Logan could tell. “Well, before Phantom, there was Thunder Shade… I was a hero.” Virgil whispered. “Though I assume that's why I’m different from Kraken. I could tell he’s never had any intentions that were for good… but I never had intentions that were for bad either, so I guess we all just end up this way one way or another.” “What happened then?” Logan asked curiously, he had heard of Thunder Shade previously, just not much… only that he had fallen, both in the public's opinions and from view. “As most heroes do… I fell. Public opinion destroyed me, and they created a villain.”

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16
Summary: Virgil, Logan, and Serpent have an encounter with the Kraken. Though Serpent’s employer arrives and ends it, revealing Kraken’s Identity and his own
Warnings: Fighting, Violence, Fire, Explosions
_________________________________________
The sun was beginning to set and Serpent was making his way back to the hotel, though he had taken longer than he wished to while out. But he couldn’t find any traces of Kraken, clearly he hid his tracks well. Serpent shook his head walking down the sidewalk, he had his hands stuffed in his back pockets as he walked just looking around, comfortable with the city as it slowed down and parts of it that lay dormant before came alive. More lights turned on around him reflecting off the metallic sheen of the jacket, a golden green faux snake print blazer.
Serpent looked up when the hotel was in sight, he crossed the street to get over to its parking lot… stopping dead in his tracks Serpent looked down as he felt the ground begin rumbling before another light caught his attention. A warm violent glow coming from one of the higher floors of the hotel. All the windows were blown out shattering out into the air as an explosion inside detonated, the blast blowing out through the windows, the fire leaking out to the outside.
Then he saw two dark figures falling, before suddenly they disappeared.
The building’s fire alarms blared loudly as people flooded out in fear.
___________________________
Virgil finished his call to room service and put the phone down, just ordering some late lunch for them. He and Logan had spent the rest of the day relaxing quietly and accidentally napping at one point. But due to their later breakfast they decided having late lunch… well dinner, would be fine.
Virgil looked over at Logan and smiled, “It should be here soon.”
Logan was standing over by a window looking at the sun setting, he looked over hearing Virgil, “Alright.” he nodded and froze hearing a knock at the door. “That soon?”
“No… maybe it's a serpent.” Virgil replied and opened the door to see one of the service delivery carts that was draped in a white cloth. On top of it was a phone and a note, it simply said ‘answer’.
Right after Virgil finished reading it the phone rang. Cautiously he picked it up and answered, “Hello-”
“Phantom… you promised you wouldn’t tell anyone.” Kraken’s voice rang through clearly.
“What! I… I didn’t.” Virgil’s confusion instantly shifted to fear at recognizing the voice… he knew the consequences, and he should have known that Kraken would find out no matter what.
“Well I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt then I suppose… and your family won’t be harmed. Can’t promise the same for you. I had told you to not tell anyone about this.” Kraken said softly before hanging up quickly.
Virgil stood there holding the phone to his ear for a moment before he heard it. A faint rhythmic beep. Before suddenly it went silent. Virgil dropped the phone, taking a step back.
It all happened so quick, maybe within seconds. Though the fear and startling realizations of what was happening made it feel as if it was so much slower, an agonizing amount of time seemed to pass within those seconds.
The beeping was silent for ten seconds before there was a faint click.
Virgil turned and ran over to Logan.
Everything on the cart blew apart quickly as an explosive hidden underneath detonated. The shrapnel inside it spreading across the room, propelled by the force of the blast. A fiery inferno erupted in the room, with such power that it shattered all the windows out. The blaze crossed the room instantly.
Virgil covered Logan just as the blast detonated, as soon as the windows were blown out he quickly grabbed Logan jumping out the shattered window. The wind whipped against them as they free fell down the building.
Logan held on tightly to Virgil with one of his arms looking back up seeing the flames taking over the room they had just been in, his book clutched against his and Virgil's chests. He closed his eyes as the world around them faded to black and he took a deep breath.
Virgil was tense, holding on tight as they went through the darkness before he finally let them out in an alley less than a block away.
They didn’t let go of each other when they were let out. Virgil just moved holding Logan’s hand as he led them out of the alley. He looked up seeing the building burning bright against the darkening sky.
Logan started walking back towards the building pulling Virgil along with him before pausing seeing Serpent staring up at the building at the edge of the parking lot.
Virgil looked down and saw Serpent standing not far from them, “Serpent!” he called out loud enough for the others to hear.
Serpent instantly turned and ran over to the two. He put a hand on Virgil’s cheek taking a deep breath, “Are you in any pain. Either of you? Are you hurt?”
“I feel fi-” Virgil stopped and slowly turned around.
The ground began to rumble below them, cracks and fissures began forming going down the street.
Serpent put his arms around Virgil and Logan and slowly started pulling them back. “Phantom… I highly advise you to create a shield, and make sure it goes under our feet.” He whispered.
Virgil nodded, taking a deep breath, slowly shadows started surrounding them from all around. Though they could see through them, the shadows were practically solid.
A large fracturing sound came from behind them, a laugh following it.
Slowly the three turned to see 8 large tentacles slowly sprouting out of the street, the pavement cracked and destroyed at the base of each tentacle. They continued growing, sprouting up into the air and waving around as if they weren’t made out of solid rock. In the center of the tentacles sat Kraken in a throne of his own making, the mirrored mask he wore reflecting the flames from the nearby building. “My my Phantom… it seems you didn’t heed my warnings. It’s ok though, your usefulness has run out.” Kraken called out to them with a cheerful but dramatic tone.
Virgil stepped closer to the edge of his barrier glaring at Kraken. He looked back at Serpent and Starlight for a moment before stepping out of the barrier, “Maybe, But I still won’t let you hurt anyone.”
Logan ran over to the edge of the barrier, when he ran into it the barrier was like a solid wall.
Virgil glared at Kraken as he let shadows surround himself.
“Awww the villain is trying to play hero, so sad you’re going to fail.” The tentacles turned down before going at Virgil quickly.
Virgil took a deep breath staying where he was, “No I won’t.”
The tentacles kept going at Virgil, all of them coming at him from different sides.
Virgil looked around before closing his eyes, portals of darkness opened all around him letting the tentacles into them. Virgil let the tentacles out surrounding Kraken. He closed his end of the portals, cutting them off. As they came out around Kraken they started crumbling, disconnected from the rest of the tentacles.
Serpent watched and poked the barrier before crossing his arms, “Your boyfriend is quite impressive.”
Logan instantly turned looking at him confused.
“Well look at how focused he is, he’s splitting it too between trying to fight off kraken and keeping us contained, the barrier isn’t even weakening.”
“I guess… but he’s not my boyfriend.”
“Could have fooled me.” Janus shrugged. “He’s an idiot to sacrifice himself like this, but at least he’s stalling for time for us.”
“Stalling?” Logan asked, he couldn’t deny that Virgil was being an idiot.
“Yes. My employer is on his way… and he will know how to deal with Kraken.” Janus replied glaring out looking towards Kraken.
“Who is your employer?”
“You will soon enough meet him.” Janus replied simply not giving an answer.
Logan glared before looking back.
Virgil glanced back to check his shield was still surrounding them before looking back at Kraken.
Kraken simply grew the tentacles out again before aiming them for the Barrier surrounding Starlight and Serpent.
Virgil watched and quickly pulled the shadows around him again before running. He jumped up towards the tentacles while forming a scythe. Virgil swung it, cutting the tentacles from the rest of its form. Though he had missed one of them.
Kraken glared under his mask before sending the other tentacle at Phantom.
It had managed to catch him off guard slamming Phantom down to the ground.
Virgil hit the ground hard, pain webbing its way through him. He coughed out some blood after a moment of laying there on the ground. The tentacle stayed holding him down, leaving him no options of getting up.
The barrier flickered for a moment before becoming strong again, as if nothing happened.
Logan looked out watching Virgil worried before taking a step back, “We have to get out of this thing.
Serpent nodded, “Definitely.” He flipped his dagger before catching it and stabbing it into the barrier. “Damage it enough and eventually, any shield will fall.”
Logan nodded and pulled a sword from his book and began to strike.
Kraken lifted his tentacle up, letting it strike down on Virgil again, before repeating it.
Virgil cried out in pain as he was hit over and over, unable to get a chance to move before being slammed down on by the concrete. He took a deep breath letting go of the barrier protecting Logan and Serpent, quickly making one around himself before the tentacle could strike down again.
Kraken noticed the barrier around Starlight and Serpent go down and quickly reformed his tentacles, sending them at the two.
Logan stepped outside the area the barrier had just been then looked up seeing the tentacles coming at them.
Serpent ran over and grabbed Logan pulling him to the ground, narrowly dodging them.
Logan immediately got up running over towards Virgil but paused when he saw a guy walking past him in an annoyed manner. Logan ran over to stop the civilian only for the ground under him to knock him off his feet.
The guy was dressed similarly to Kraken but wore an entirely black helmet that had some silver lines on parts of it. He just kept walking towards Kraken, finally catching his attention.
Kraken instantly started sending all his focus and attacks at the guy who simply knocked them away with no effort. Kraken took a few steps back before falling onto the ground, his feet knocked from under him.
The guy continued approaching.
Kraken scrambled to get up just as the guy was in front of him. He didn’t even have a chance to fight back.
The guy’s hand became covered in a coating of stone before he slapped Kraken across the face, knocking his mask off and knocking him out. The tentacles all around crumbled to the ground as he passed out.
Kraken fell to the ground, his mask cracked and next to him.
Logan was at Virgil’s side helping him up. Though when he heard the solid sound of the guy’s slap. Logan looked over to see Kraken on the ground.
The guy kneeled down taking off a black fabric mask that had covered Kraken’s face under the mask and stared down at Kraken.
Logan instantly recognized the face, even from this far away… that was Roman.
His roommate had been Kraken, had tried to Kill him… and was apparently a villain.
Serpent walked over towards The guy and stopped next to him holding out his hand to shake the other’s. “Remus, it's nice to see you again.”
The guy, Remus, took off his helmet and shook Serpent’s hand. “Thanks for finding my identity thief!”
Serpent nodded letting go of his hand then gestured to Logan and Virgil, “I received assistance.”
Remus grinned and grabbed Serpent's wrist pulling him over to meet the two.
Virgil got up leaning on Logan and stared at Remus.
“Are you the employer?” Logan asked instantly.
“Yeah, I needed a serpent here to track down my brother, who had stolen my identity. I’m Remus.” He said and reached out to shake Logan’s hand.
Logan nodded and shook his hand.
Virgil nodded to him and smiled, “Thanks for coming and helping us.”
“Of course!” He smiled and looked back to check on Roman, “Shit… he’s gone.” he sighed seeing Roman simply gone. “We’ll get him back later. But first I’m assuming you all want some answers.”

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10
Summary: Phantom has an Encounter with Starlight while he was with Serpent. Starlight leaves with more questions unanswered and the hope that soon, everything would be explained.
______________________________________________________
It had been two days… two days since… since Phantom had killed all those people. Logan had been working on theories and explanations… but still he wasn’t sure why Phantom did it, not for sure.
Logan was out on a patrol, just out looking around the area. Logan didn’t always patrol looking for trouble, sometimes he listened to the news to find it. But tonight going on a patrol felt right, it was a nice night… and walking around helped take his mind off of everything.
As Logan walked he began to notice voices nearby him, he looked down an alley to see two people standing near each other… but he could tell, one of them was Phantom.
Logan stared confused… who could Phantom be talking to. He walked forward without thinking and called out, “Phantom, nice to see you this time of night.”
Virgil instantly looked over when he had heard Starlight, when he looked at his face all he could remember was Starlight's expression… the shock and terrified reaction he had after…
Virgil got pulled out of his thoughts by a hand on his shoulder, he looked over nodding to Serpent and thanked him softly before stepping away and walking towards starlight. “Star, it’s good… to see you again…”
“So… are you going to tell me who they are?” Logan asked and gestured to the guy behind Phantom, skipping to the point.
Virgil looked back then nodded to Starlight, “Yes… that is… Serpent.”
Starlight nodded and stared suspiciously, he didn’t mention what had happened… Now seeing Phantom again, he didn’t know how to bring it up, especially when he wasn't alone but someone was with him. “Well… what were you up to?”
“You know I never reveal my plans.” Phantom replied, laughing softly, though in a seemingly forced manner, before looking down and turned away.
Logan took a breath and moved forward and caught Phantom’s arm, “I’m going to need you to talk to me.” He said sternly, “Not now… but I need an explanation at one point. I need you to explain when you’re able to.”
Virgil stared at him silently, he knew what Logan meant, he understood him. But he didn’t know if he could explain, if it was even safe to explain. He didn’t even know if he could bring himself to explain, without bringing up the pain of everything. “Soon… somewhere safe.” Virgil replied then pulled away and walked over to Serpent.
Serpent took Virgil’s arm and looked back at Starlight, he didn’t say a word to him, he just watched him fade as they went into the void only to be brought to the other side of the city.
Logan stood there alone, staring at the spot Phantom had stood in moments ago… But his short conversation gave him more information. That this place wasn’t safe to talk… maybe not anywhere around, it seemed Phantom couldn’t let anyone hear what they discussed. Logan pulled out his phone quickly writing down all of his newly acquired information. Maybe he was overthinking it all, but this had to mean something.
After a few minutes of just standing there he took a deep breath and started walking again before deciding to go back home to his apartment, it seemed tonight was just slow. He had more important things to think about, and to figure out… He had to find somewhere safe too. He needed to talk with Phantom.
Logan knew Phantom, maybe better than others. Though now he wasn’t sure about that anymore. For all he knew, his nemesis for all this time could be completely different from what he thought, what he knew… what he was sure of. For now, all Logan was sure of was that Phantom had saved him on the brink of death and he repaid him by helping him, that Phantom killed 50 people, he had said it was to save himself, he couldn’t explain why and it wasn’t safe,  maybe anywhere in the city. There was also Serpent the one with Phantom, who he knew nothing about.
Logan thought for hours before falling asleep at his desk, his computer with all his notes locked after an extended period of inactivity, keeping them safe.
Logan would figure it out, all of it.
________________
Virgil had taken Serpent with him across the city, he couldn’t look into Star’s eyes any longer and lie… He had crossed lines and had to explain. But he couldn’t, not without risking the lives of many.
Serpent took Phantom’s hand again after several moments of seeing the other just standing there still, frozen. “Come on, the hotel is down the street.”
Virgil blinked and looked at Serpent, “What?”
“I’m not letting you head home tonight, I have no clue why I let you last night. But he knows where you live. So you’re staying with me.” Serpent told him, leaving no room for questions. Then he led Phantom down the street to his hotel.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9
Summary: Virgil has his meeting with Serpent and discusses Kraken and their connections, during the conversation a small bit of Virgil’s backstory is uncovered.
_______________________________
Serpent looked over at Phantom when the curtain closed, “Well… now to business.”
“So… will you tell me who you are now?”
“You are certainly persistent wondering who I am…” Serpent said and leaned forward a bit.
“Well, Kraken did leave the moment he had seen you. So I’m wondering if I should be scared too.”
Serpent smirked and leaned across the table putting a hand on Phantom’s cheek, “Well if you were suspicious of me being dangerous, would you have even come?”
Virgil pulled away and stared, “No, probably not.”
“Well thank you for coming.”
Virgil just nodded, “So… who are you?”
“I am Serpent as you know… In a way I’m a bounty hunter actually. I’ve been following Kraken for a while now. I’ve had close encounters with him but he always slips out of reach. He’s been hard to keep track of… but now I guess he is here.” Serpent explained briefly.
Virgil nodded, listening, “So he’s avoiding you?”
“Yes, he doesn’t want me catching up… now tell me, who are you Phantom?”
“I’m the villain-”
“How? What… motivated you?”
“Protecting my family… but I never set out to be a villain… just…”
“Seen as one from unfortunate events nobody could’ve foreseen.” Serpent replied, leaning back.
Virgil nodded, “People died, I couldn’t save them and I was responsible. I caused a tragedy… but I’m doing this to protect my friends and family. Kraken threatened to kill them… so last night… I-I killed for him… to protect them.” Virgil said and looked down, fidgeting with his hands a bit, he hated thinking back on the night… what he had done that night… the people he had killed.
Serpent moved over to Phantom and took his hands, “You blame yourself…” “Of course I do! I killed them! It was me who took their lives!” Virgil replied and gripped Serpent’s hands tightly.
Serpent shook his head, “Now are you talking about the event that turned you into a villain, or what happened the other night? Though I already know though what happened the other night, it wasn’t your fault. I know Kraken and even if you didn’t kill those people… Kraken would’ve killed them anyway. If he wanted them dead, they would die.”
Virgil nodded softly, taking a deep breath, “Could we… just order some food? I’m actually a bit hungry.”
Serpent noticed Phantom’s change of topic but just nodded, not calling attention to it. “Yeah of course we could.” He grabbed the menus and handed Phantom one then quietly looked their menus over.
They called a waiter over and ordered the food then sat in silence for a little while.
Virgil was just unsure what to say to Serpent. What other questions to ask him… and his mind just kept changing and thinking about other things, hoping his friends were ok… thinking about last night… and thinking about Starlight’s reaction. But he couldn’t tell him, or else then his friends might be in peril. But… Starlight probably hated him, and he knew Logan saw him as everyone else did, villainous.
Virgil just had to remain silent, nobody other than Serpent could know.
After a while, after they had gotten their drinks and meals, Serpent had spoken up, “So… tell me of your encounters with Kraken.”
“Well… the first interaction wasn’t mine at all. It was Starlight, the city’s hero. He had shown up to my apartment, a bloody mess… He couldn’t tell me much, he was barely standing conscious. The second encounter we managed to both get away… but there was also an encounter where I had gotten stabbed suddenly, Kraken had spoken to me telling me he was going to make everyone fear him and kill Starlight. After that I had managed to find where Starlight lived and he helped patch me up, stop the bleeding. Then… a few nights ago, he was at my home. He threatened to harm my friends, and recruited me, he said he couldn’t reveal himself yet he wasn’t ready.”
Serpent nodded, listening to Phantom, “So Kraken seems to be planning something big, so he can’t reveal himself yet, interesting. And… Starlight, though he is the hero and you’re the villain… you’re not really enemies.:
“I guess so, and no… Me and Starlight have our differences, but we’re not exactly enemies.”
Serpent nodded softly, “Could I shadow you?”
“Shadow me?” Virgil asked, trying to hold back a laugh. “I kinda am shadows.”
“You know what I mean, like follow you.”
“Well… that’s a lot of pressure, but I guess you could.”
“Thank you, I could make sure to stay hidden… I just want to watch… and hopefully Kraken will show himself again.”
Virgil nodded softly, “Yeah that sounds like a good idea, it could definitely help you try to encounter him.”
“I’ll make sure to find him, for you.”
Virgil stared at him blushing slightly, “I’d appreciate that.”
Serpent nodded and called the waiter over and paid for their bill before they both left and walked out.
“So… could I possibly help you get home, or wherever you’re staying?”
“Well I have a hotel room, so you could help me get to the hotel, if you’d be so kind.”
Virgil nodded and held out his hand, “well then… tell me where.”
Serpent suspiciously told him and took his hand before the world went dark.
Then they were there… standing outside the hotel.
Serpent looked at Phantom and nodded letting go of his hand, “Well… I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Yeah… Tomorrow.” Virgil nodded before stepping into the shadows and disappearing from sight and going home to rest and think over everything.
Though one thing that Virgil wondered was… if Serpent was a bounty hunter and after Kraken… who had hired him to tell him to go after him.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8
Summary: Logan deals with what he had witnessed and tries to understand, why. Virgil deals with what he has done and goes to his friends, grateful for them being safe. Then Virgil goes to meet Serpent, to gain information.
Warnings: Blood and Gore, Death Mentioned
__________________________________________
Blood,
Bodies,
Death,
Then at the center of it all… Phantom.
Logan shook his head and took a deep breath looking out the window, he couldn’t get the image of the massacre from his head.
There were 50 victims dead… and out of 80, specifically 50 were dead.
In all these years… Logan had never seen Phantom kill so many out of cold blood. He’d never really seen Phantom kill in general.
But the image of the blood soaked Phantom standing among the bodies of the dead and fearful hostage, remained in his mind.
Along with Phantom’s words… the last words he had said before he left, disappearing into the darkness, “I saved myself.”
Why… It made no sense, what had he saved himself from, how did killing so many save him… Logan grabbed an empty notebook and started writing down everything he knew, he had to figure this out. If Phantom really did do that to save or protect himself… Logan would find out why, and then he’d help protect Phantom. As a hero it was his job to protect, even if that meant saving a villain.
Logan got lost in thought, writing what he knew and possible reasons why.
Maybe he was just trying to rationalize the death of 50 people… but there had to be some reason why those people were dead.
Logan wrote each victim’s name down and started to research, he needed to find out everything on them and something to connect them all.
There was then a knock at the door, Logan didn’t even know how much time had passed. Logan just turned around and looked at his door, “Um come in.” Logan yawned.
Roman stepped in and looked at Logan for a few moments, “Hey… are you ok?”
“Yes… I’m adequate, why?”
“It’s been 4 hours… you didn’t come out for dinner after I called a while ago. When you came home earlier you were out of it. What happened?”
Logan shook his head and got up, “I don’t want to talk about it.”
Roman nodded softly and was quiet for a bit, “Ok… just know I’m going to continuously pester you on this. But for now I’ll just heat up your dinner.”
“Thank you, Ro.”
“Of course, Nerd.” Roman smiled and left the room, going off to the kitchen and heating up the leftovers.
Logan followed Roman out and sat down at the table quietly, he yawned again and glanced at the clock, it was 10pm.
Roman came over after a few minutes and put Logan’s plate on the table and sat across from him.
Logan mumbled a thank you before he began eating.
Roman just watched him for a few minutes before speaking up, “did Virgil break up with you?”
“What? No-”
“See I knew he was a jerk from the minute I saw him… wait you said no.” Roman nodded and looked off awkwardly, pressing his lips together and thought. “He’s a very nice guy, I liked him, even if he was odd.”
“Thanks… but we’re fine. We didn’t break up… and it’s nothing.” Logan replied and finished eating then got up and cleaned up.
“Ok… well if you want to talk about it…” Roman said and smiled softly.
Logan simply nodded before walking out and leaving the room and going back to his own without a single word.
Roman stood there watching Logan walk out and leave, he sighed and nodded before going to his own room and heading to bed for his beauty sleep.
Logan closed up the notebook and hid it before getting changed into some bedclothes and laying down to sleep. He’d have more time in the morning.
______________________
Morning came and went, early morning becoming late afternoon.
Virgil took a deep breath finally standing up from the couch, the place where he hadn’t moved for the last several hours, just letting the tv distract him from his thoughts. But he couldn’t stay there all day. He yawned, exhausted from not sleeping all night. But he was scared that if he closed his eyes he would only see the ones he killed… or even his friends dead.
Virgil went slowly to the kitchen and made a coffee, needing energy to deal with the day. After he just sat on the counter and sipped it hoping to wake himself up a bit. Though he knew it probably wouldn’t help him.
Suddenly… Virgil’s phone was ringing. Virgil looked over towards the couch before reluctantly getting off the counter and getting it, he sighed softly seeing it had been Patton and he picked up the phone call. “Hello.”
“Hey Kiddo!” Patton’s cheery voice rang through, “I was worried, I haven’t heard from you in a few days.”
“Yeah I’ve been good Patton, sorry though I’ve been kinda busy.”
“Oh! That’s ok, I was just worried… How about you come over tonight? We could have a game and movie night with everyone!”
“I’d love to but… it has to be tomorrow.”
“Why? Do you have plans tonight already?” Patton asked.
“Um… actually I do, I have somewhere to be at 7.”
“Ooooooh! Fun!! Well can you come over earlier than that? Come to the cafe maybe?”
“Hmm… fine I’ll be there soon.”
“Yay!” Patton cheered.
“See ya soon.”
“Bye!!”
Virgil got dressed and took a deep breath before going out headed to the cafe, hoping to spend a few hours around his friends taking his mind off of everything, because he knew that they were safe.
Virgil got to the cafe and sat down at the counter sipping some tea while teasing Patton and Remy who were working… he was happy to see them again… especially safe.
_______________________
Before Virgil’s… meeting. He headed home and got changed, dressing smart like he was told. He put on some dark jeans, a black t-shirt, and a black blazer he had that had a soft interior that was a deep purple. He hoped it was ‘smart’ enough… he didn’t really know what the concept of dress smart even really meant though. He got on some nice shoes and fixed his hair before finally heading out, going to the corner of 5th and 3rd.
It was 6:58pm… and Virgil stood at the corner looking around for a Serpent before a man  came a few minutes later, he walked up to Virgil and took his arm.
Virgil looked at him confused.
“I’m glad you could make it, Phantom, and I must say… you clean up well when not covered in blood.”
Virgil tensed up slightly at the comment and nodded, “Um thank you, Serpent…” he nodded softly. “So where are we off to?”
“A restaurant, it’s safe to talk there. Then we could discuss some much needed information, on both our parts.” Serpent told him and continued guiding him down the street.
Virgil just nodded in understanding, “That sounds good.” He agreed.
Serpent took them inside a building and they took the elevator to one of the top floors. When they got off they were inside a fancy restaurant. Serpent walked to the hostess stand and gave his name and they were soon guided to a table.
The table they went to you had to step up a platform to get to, it was a round bench with a table and a curtain in front giving full privacy, when you needed a waiter you pressed a button to alert them.
Virgil sat at the table across from Serpent.
Serpent smiled and nodded to Phantom before shutting the curtain, giving them complete privacy to converse.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11
Summary: Everyone is dead, or are they? Virgil sees Logan again and Logan asks for answers, to communicate... but it’s not safe here
Warnings: Murder, Blood, Gore
________________________________
Corpses of Loved ones littered the room. Blood leaving an everlasting mark of remembrance. An Intruder hid, watching expectantly. Patton was sprawled on the floor of Virgil’s apartment, a kitchen knife sticking out of his chest, blood pooling under him. Remy was collapsed on the floor, his neck broken, his lifeless eyes staring off at nothing. Emile stood slumped over the back of the couch, his throat slit open. His blood staining the couch. Virgil stood at the door staring at his friends… his family. All of them dead because of him. He couldn’t save them… he should have never said anything. Then… Virgil saw someone stepping out from the shadows. Kraken stood there in front of Virgil. He was dressed in his extravagant black and green suit, the same suit as he wore during every one of their meetings, silvery chrome mask and all. Looking more Virgil noticed that in Kraken’s grip was Starlight, his hand wrapped around the other’s neck, choking him. Phantom couldn’t let Kraken kill him… he couldn’t lose everyone. He couldn’t be alone. Virgil screamed and rushed forward, he needed to save him in time. Though it was too late already as Starlight’s body was dropped to the floor. Unconscious, and probably… dead. Virgil cried out seeing… Logan, dead with all he’d ever loved. Kraken now gone, as if he had never been there. Virgil was left surrounded by bodies of those who were once his family as he cried, wishing he hadn’t had said anything.
Hands were on him, grabbing his shoulders. But he couldn’t care if it was Kraken going to end him. He already lost all he cared for, he had nothing to live for. Reluctantly he opened his eyes, expecting to see Kraken. He was expecting to see the reflection of himself in Kraken’s mask, staring back at him. But all he saw was blinding light… Slowly his eyes adjusted to the light and he saw Serpent hovering over him. “Dear, you’re alright.” Serpent whispered, pulling Virgil closer. “They… they’re all dead.” Virgil whispered, shaking his head. He tried to pull away, he couldn’t stay. He couldn’t sentence Serpent to death through his sheer presence around him. “Who’s dead?” Serpent asked softly, holding onto him closer. He could tell that Phantom wasn’t in his right mind… he had heard him yelling in his sleep. “Everyone… my family… Star.. He killed them all.” Virgil whispered out of breath, he  looked up at Serpent as he answered, tears streaking down his face. “No, they’re not dead. Everyone is safe. Phantom, it was just a dream.” Serpent replied, rubbing his back and holding him close, just hoping to comfort him… he knew that Phantom wasn’t going to trust his word easily though. “But…” “A dream, a real feeling dream. But still a dream… It was all fake. Call them if it makes you feel better, make sure they’re ok.” Serpent nodded and started pulling away and getting out of the bed, “I’m going to make some coffee, everything is going to be ok. Just relax.” He knew he needed to give Phantom some space. Virgil sat up and found his phone. It was nearly 4am… but it didn’t matter, he needed to be sure everyone was safe, that everyone was alive. He needed to call them like Serpent had suggested. Patton had been woken up with the call, but assured that he was ok… nothing was wrong. Emile had been awake and preparing for the day before he had to get to work. He had been the next Virgil called. He answered and told him that he was alright and Remy was safe and just asleep in bed. Everyone was ok… Everyone he could call was safe and ok. He carefully got out of bed and pulled his jacket back on. “I’m not staying for coffee.” He said looking over at Serpent. “Why? Where are you going?” Serpent asked, walking over with a mug in hand. “I need to go check on Star… I can’t call him. But I need to be sure he’s ok too.”  He said walking away to leave. Serpent reached out to stop him but was too late as Virgil disappeared with the shadows in the corner.
Virgil stepped out of the shadows and into Logan’s room. He sighed softly relieved, seeing him safe… seeing him alive. Logan sat slumped over his desk asleep with his head near his computer. Though he’d probably regret the position in the morning when his back was hurting. Virgil sighed looking at him in the position, he had to move him. At least put him to bed, without waking him hopefully. Virgil had shadows wrap around Logan, lifting him from the chair and slowly moving him to the bed. He had Logan gently lowered before he let go and walked over pulling the covers up over Logan. At least now Logan would be comfortable, it was the least he could do for him. Logan opened his eyes, slightly waking up as he was put down and reached for Virgil’s arm. “Phantom?” he asked, confused, staring at him half asleep. Virgil sighed looking over, “Hey, Star… You should go back to sleep.” Logan shook his head, sitting up a bit, “What are you doing here?” He asked softly and pulled Virgil’s arm to bring him closer. “It’s late…” Virgil sighed. He let Logan pull him and sat down on the edge of the bed. “I know that… Why are you here?” “I was just leaving…” ‘It’s late.” Logan whispered slowly, pushing Virgil’s jacket off of him. “Are you going to tell me why you’re here?” Virgil shrugged, “I just did… But I’m going now.” Virgil pulled his jacket back on as he stood up. Logan turned on the lamp and got up grabbing Virgil, stopping him. He stared at him and saw Virgil’s eyes were red and puffy, Logan could already tell, he had been crying recently. “Are you going to explain why you’re here and… what’s wrong? Or do you always need to be dark and mysterious?” “I can’t explain… or it’ll all come true.” Virgil whispered, shaking his head and looking away. Logan pulled Virgil back into the bed and held onto him, “It’s not like you could see the future. I think after all this time I’d know my adversary’s powers.” “But he’ll know.” Virgil whispered, shaking his head,  his eyes squeezed shut. “Is it… because it’s not safe to talk here?” Logan asked after thinking for a moment and remembering the interaction from earlier. Virgil opened his eyes and looked at Logan for a second before nodding softly, just nodding and not talking. Logan nodded and pulled him close, hugging him, “Then I’ll find somewhere safe.” he whispered. “There’s nowhere nearby that’s safe. I can’t say anything. Nowhere will ever be safe.” “Virgil… you could essentially teleport places. If you took me with you, would I be able to control where we end up?” Logan asked suddenly. Virgil stared in confusion at the change of topic. “Well… I guess it could possibly work.” he nodded. Logan nodded back and got up, “Alright, let’s go!” “Wait? Go where?” Virgil asked, staying sat on the bed. Logan sighed leaning close, “Somewhere safe.” he whispered.
