Vikki is a laid back and east going energetic overlord with a “cool dude” and “Go with the flow” demeanor and is known for being the fourth member of the vees /entertainment district and instead of being in charge of fashion like Velvet, the porn like Valentino, or the tech like Vox ,Vikki Is instead in charge of the music that goes around Hell.

Vikki's demeanor is normally easygoing, calm, and carefree, no matter the crisis. However, they are generally impatient as they hate boredom,cannot hold still,and can be impulsive and short-tempered. Because of this, Vikki can be reckless and quick to act before thinking, throwing themselves into trouble without a second thought and regards for others' warnings, to the point that they acknowledged that their speed has gotten them in all kinds of conflicts.

Their carefree nature could often lead to them being terrible at controlling the volume of their voice , humming and or singing to themselves a lot, carrying air horns wherever they go and blowing them as either a stim ,excited, or just because .

Vikki is a loose-canon that's known for being extremely energetic, enthusiastic, easily distracted, fun loving, mischievous, cool (with a hint of insanity underneath) and ,creative .

Vikki puts up a laid-back, fun-loving and musically adept public persona. However, beneath this collected, suave exterior is Vikki's true nature: a self-absorbed, superficial con man. Rarely thinking ahead, Viks largely coasts by on luck and social media buzz, and it's rare they put actual effort or thought into doing anything- they'll disregard or simply not listen to others' instructions, and they tend to put more work into flimflamming people.

Vikki is fond of gloating when they think they have the edge over their adversaries. Vikki also displays neurotic, perfectionistic personality traits, and they rapidly come unglued when things don't go exactly the way they want them to.

While they are typically open-minded, it won’t seem as if they are when they’re being self-righteous about their views. Vikki can become reckless. They are impulsive and immature at times.

While they do have a kind and soft side, they rarely show it thanks to pride and the fear of being vulnerable, infact similar to the other vees and/or other demons in general they can be just as evil, deranged, malicious, and cynical!!

Backstory/Background:

Childhood upbringing -

Grew up in Las Vegas in the 80s with their mom and dad and their older brother and sister (the two were twins) and their parents made the three child celebrities that has ended up acting and/or staring in a lot of commercials, PSAs, ads, shows, movies, and games and none of the ever liked it other than their parents

Growing up -

As Richard Axel Newson got older they left their TV fame behind to become a Dj and start dj-ing at parties ,those not being the only things he started doing but he became extremely impulsive and self destructive to the point it'll always leave them into trouble

Adulthood -

Their self destructive and impulsive behavior soon started to lead Richard to no only insanity but their relationships with people to start gradually but slowly fall a part ,even later on causing them to end up getting into an argument with their sister about their own health and safety

Death -

Months prior from that argument , no one has heard from Richard because they were in their bedroom all day with the door locked, only to one day for their siblings to come in check on them, only to find their door kicked in (hinting at a murder) and Richard on the floor with 15 bullet wounds in their body and their house on fire (the murderer must or been trying to burn the evidence)

Richard was soon pronounced dead in the hospital

Since we're sharing P!ATD stories...buckle up!

I'm originally from the Chicago suburbs (which is also an annoying personality trait) and I was 13 years old, heavily layering tank tops from Kohl's over v-neck shirts.

It's May 2008 and me and these two super cool older girls from Elmhurst (whom I met at Fine Arts Camp @ Saint Mary's College in South Bend, Indiana) went to Honda Civic Tour at the Congress Theatre in Chicago (RIP).

It was my first concert *ever* and I cannot believe how lucky I was to have it filmed. I got that hideous beige/brown Pretty.Odd sweatshirt (see attached for example) and wore it over everything because I believed I had hypohidrosis (spoiler: it was all the layered tank tops from Kohl's).

Motion City Soundtrack, Phantom Planet, and The Hush Sound were incredible openers and I have yet to have a more satisfying line up. BUT. It was at the concert that I had my first seizure! Rewind a second!

I grew up on Neopets and Flash Games and supported my friends who were really good at drawing Sonic the Hedgehog. I was on the computer *a lot.* So when the fingers in my left hand were going numb, it was dismissed as carpal tunnel - easy enough.

Now fast forward to me being such an amped up, cradle Catholic, Peggy Hill-footed teenager. I'm in ecstasy, feeling like the true Fueled By Ramen ™ teen that I knew I was inside. I'm sweaty, I'm scrunched against other people, I'm having an awakening!!!

But then my fingers go number and half of my face does too and I'm thinking it's adrenaline and hormones and Jon Walker - so I keep going. It eventually subsides, then happens again a few days later, and again, and again...for months.

Scooch ahead a little more - my mom advocates for an MRI and we get one, a then few weeks pass.

After going to ~LINCOLNSHIRE~ with my grandma and mom to see "Mama Mia" (on the day before I am set to start *THE* 8th grade), we get a call from my pediatrician that I need to go to the hospital ASAP. Turns out I have a "goober" in my brain and a "goober" is what you call a tumor when you're explaining it to a kid you helped bring into this world. Shout out to the emotional labor of doctors, for real.

I can do a "House"-style medical breakdown later and talk about my surgery/proton radiation, BUT I would much rather talk about all of my Make-A-Wish trip ideas, ripped straight outta 2008!!!

1. Visit the set of "Project Runway" and hang out with Tim Gunn.

2. A pink digital camera - literally, that was it. And you know the one I'm talking about. My Wish Granters were like....you can probably get that on your own sweetie...

3. Be on an episode of TAI TV (remember that!?) If you must know, I had big dumb crushes on Ryland and Sisky.

4. Meet Katy Perry??? (I don't know what we would have talked about or done together...I knew nothing about anything).

5. American Eage shopping spree (in retrospect, their clothes never really fit right and I only wanted to recreate the high of wearing a lace cami under a turquoise henley sweater with a pink skinny scarf at my first middle school dance - it was as much of a "Laguna Beach" moment as I could have).

Dear reader...do you want to know what I chose?

A trip to Turks and Caicos! A place I had never heard of! I got my period for the first time and we could only find cardboard, "old-school" tampons and I was FREAKING OUT. I also got a wicked sunburn (Trileptal folks!) and got sick on an unlimited supply of Boursin whipped cheese spread. Two of my brothers are redheads who do not like the beach! They were so fussy! Turks and Caicos is a lot of beach!

Please please believe me, I am unbelievably thankful for my wish (and health and life and time) and the Granting team, but have any other Make-A-Wish kids spent time thinking about alllllll the other wish possibilities?

I'm not even talking about reflecting back and considering more "practical" (which is bananas to say considering the context), but just like how my interests have changed?

In high school (and probably now, too), I was kicking myself for not using my wish to meet Jason Segel? I still have a massive crush on him, but imagine them calling him up to meet a random kid who picked him as her Make-A-Wish? (This was pre "End of the Tour" and "Muppets" for him - it only was "How I Met Your Mother" and "Freaks and Geeks" for him).

I'm 15 years in remission and doing just fine! I haven't talked about (or processed) personal health stuff very much, so thanks for letting me take a moment from reblogging transparent Snoopy sticker scans and Nora Ephron film stills to reflect on the end of an era.

I had a dream last night where i was somewhere with lindsay lohan and a girl who reminded me of faith from buffy and they were teenagers and they did the classic mean girl move of inviting themselves over to steal from me, and i noticed 2 valentines themed limited edition lipsticks i had in the dream were missing, right as they were leaving, so i chased them out the door of my room and into a hotel/lodge sort of place. They had ditched their bags in another room with one of their dads and i was like "your kid and her friend stole from me so let me check their bags for my shit" and just started going thru the duffles with him standing there. He sat down and seemed kind of in shock and he was like 'what do i do about this...' as i finished going thru Lindsay's bag. I found my stuff in the other girl's bag, it had tissue wrapped around it and the lipsticks had turned into 5 or 6 joints in strawberry and raspberry juicy jay papers. I was like 'yes! My precious valentines joints!' and ran out of the room again. Then i was back in my old hs bedroom but the bed was huge and more than halfway up to the ceiling and had pillows and duvets everywhere. I was in the middle of it in a the-strawberry-dress style white gown with red hearts on it, and then dax flame showed up out of nowhere and was like "hello" and i was like "oh hi, come over here and get comfy" and we sort of started to cuddle, then he was like "wait a second," and climbed down off the bed, and then came back up into it wearing a dress like mine, and snuggled in near to me. I directed him briefly on getting positioned optimally so his head was on my chest and our arms were loosely around eachothers torsos, he took my suggestions without reservation. The vibe was wholesome and mildly erotic, like it was going somewhere.

He asked me something about what i do and then it was like, i had already sat up excitedly because we were upright and facing eachother; I had long turquoise hair and i was talking excitedly like i was on meth. I said "well ive spent most of the last 13 years on tumblr, you know--influencing the culture." Somehow it seemed like i had evoked a noncorporeal effigy of my impact and it was considerable. Dax's position relative to mine shifted 90 degrees, around the topic. Then i was like "right now im running a pretty popular heart themed blog..." and i felt sort of like, that sounds really silly probably, but i saw his face and he was staring at me intently, with guileless focus--very politely/kindly engaged--no negative judgement but seemingly no indepth private thoughts about it, like it would have been uninteresting except that it was just what he had wanted to know. Then he was gone, and i was looking at my heart blog on a computer with no monitor edges (under the bed? Near it?) and under one of my posts were a new couple reblogs from dax, the first of which was "an invite to the heart war," which was like the skeleton war, but internet-wide and heart-themed; it was the heartbombers vs the antihearts. Everyone on our side was making every part of the net they could, pink and red and heart shaped.

Then, completely apropos of the invite, i was standing outside a drag ball taking place in a school gym, and i was with my drag mother and i was in a heart themed outfit. My drag mother looked sort of like monet x change but distinctly had bob the drag queen's personality and voice, and she was urging me to take my musical cue from the track that was playing and run on stage (ie to the front of the crowd; everyone was just on the floor, perpendicular to the bleachers. There was a full drum kit and random electric instruments and like cords and mic stands and amps everywhere in the stage area). I was looking at my outfit in a mirror, it was a metallic red bodysuit with a red shoulderlength bob, my drag mother had a very similar look in different shades of red. My makeup was all red and on my 'eyelids' (the area under my natural eyebrows) there were pink and red 3d heart appliqués. I was like 'not enough actual hearts! i have more heart stuff in my room, this needs more!' And just as the track that was playing really loudly from the gym hit its spoken word intro--which is when i should have intro'd--i ran into my room around the corner to look for stuff for my outfit, like heart shaped sunglasses with like antlers made of hearts on the brows, and heart accessories. But i couldnt find the stuff i wanted immediately and was rummaging around going "cmon cmonnnn! Fuck!" for a few bars of music before finally giving up and running back out of the room into the foyer outside the gym door and then directly into the gym through the crowd, ending in a powerslide on one knee into the cleared space for performers. I made my very late entrance sort of scooting myself further with my hands, and when i skidded to a stop and pivoted to face the crowd just as the main lyrical part of the song started, i quickly started fake-out lipsyching and realized i didnt know the words, didnt recognize the song, and had already completely fucked up even faking it, AND in half a second i was going to have to hop up to my feet and start improving choreo, too. I woke up abruptly right then.

Later that night i dreamed i was trying to get simon to read a two page paper i had written for a class i was sitting in, there were desks and stuff and other students, the room was weird like an auditorium style lecture hall mixed with a masonic lodge or whatever. I was shouting in frustration, sounding strangled and hectic, and i kept losing the two papers in a pile of stuff around my feet, and the papers were getting more and more compressed into a fan shape from how i kept gripping them and waving them around together. The paper was important for the class but also i knew it was like, i had penned some kind of earthshattering poetic-prose metasocial treatise that was pivotally important to global art & philosophical history, on page two. Simon kept insisting that because i had loaded exposition into a line of dialogue midway down page 1 (the only exposition or dialogue on either page), it wasnt worth reading and martin would never have been so gauche as to write badly and then expect someone to read it. My dad was sitting with some people off to the side of the room and i could implicitly hear him thinking that if he hadnt understood where i was coming from he'd have been as dismissive and impatient as simon, listening to my raised voice and wracked tone, and he was feeling something akin to embarassment at me, like he was halfway inhabiting this parallel self who didnt see my pov and was ashamed i was his kid acting like that.

Establishing Dominance

“Fearless Leader! I challenge you over leadership of team JNPR, accept or forever be a nerd!” Nora shouts at Jaune from on top of the lunch table, standing on his lunch, absolutely ruining Jaune’s nuggies.

Murmurs overtook the cafeteria at her proclamation, it was bold challenge indeed and one if ignored would permanently label Jaune as a nerd. Many people looked at Jaune as if he would bolt from the cafeteria in fear or as if he would crack immediately and surrender the title of leader to Nora so that he may not face her wrath, not that many would blame him, Nora hits hard. But to their surprise, Jaune merely smirked at her challenge, a new wave of murmurs rippling outward.

Jaune had been anticipating it for weeks that Nora would challenge him for leadership of team JNPR, so he wasn’t surprised she had finally did so. He wasn’t surprised she wanted to be Leader, it could be pretty fun at times and he saw how much she wanted to be Queen of the team , he was also pretty sure she wanted that crown he made of twigs, twine and, duct tape he wore in his spare time.

“Very well Nora, consider your challenge accepted.” Jaune said with a warm, smooth confidence.

Nora rocked back as if struck, not expecting this level of nonchalance from her friend and leader. Sure, she knew he would accept her challenge, he had far too much pride not too. But, for him to smile and welcome it? It threw her off guard.

A beaming smile came easily though, this just made it all more exciting.

“Very well, soon to be Fearful of me Leader, I will await in the Emerald forest for you, be there or be square!”

“Count on, it Nora.” Between the eyes of the blond and the ginger, one could swear they saw lightning hopping between them.

Ren signed tiredly, and Pyrrha looked torn between blushing at Jaune’s sudden confidence, and smiling warmly at Nora’s antics.

Yang was watching intently on the two, Ruby looked anxious, Weiss looked on wondering how her life became so insane, and Blake was already writing in her notebook.

The challenge was a serious matter, one he wasn’t letting it go without a fight, he worked really hard on the Crown of Juniper and he’d be damned if some upstart took it from him! ... And, he was the only one with leadership skills out of the four of them, he guessed. There was also the matter of Nora getting bored by afternoon and hand the reigns back over to him, but that would still be most of a day with Nora in charge of team JNPR, and while he may love that insane girl he did not want to clean up the mess after letting her lead.

What did surprise him was the fact she had waited long enough for him to find his semblance before challenging him, that was kind of her. Too, bad he was all out of mercy today. The Crown was his and his alone!

Jaune and Nora stared at each other, standing twenty feet apart from each other in a dirt circle thirty feet in diameter. Surrounding them was a crowd of people who turned out to watch them.

Jaune stood tall and proudly with his hair moving in the faint breeze, with the way the sun hit his face he could have been confused for a warrior-prince of old. Though, it was to be noted, only thing covering his body was a baby blue robe.

Nora faced Jaune with her arms crossed somehow managing to look down on him despite nearly being a foot and half shorter. Her turquoise eyes glittering with mischief like a the old Trickster spirits of old. Interestingly enough, she too only wore a robe, hers a pretty cherry blossom pink.

Goodwitch, and Winter Schnee, stood facing the two juggernauts of personality that were her students.

“Strip!” The two yelled out unison.

With that the robes dropped, and the crowd went wild, as nothing could obscure their sight of the Nora and Jaunes naked bodies any longer.

Pyrrha, Velvet, Coco, Ruby, and so many others turned red in the face screaming in ecstasy. The level of excitement in the crowd could not be measured by mere words.

Ren was taking a nap in the dorm, Weiss was sleeping with him; White Lotus for life, Bitches!

Goodwitch and Winter then held up their hands silencing the crowd, and said together, “FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME!” Holding up a bottle of baby oil.

Goodwitch approached Jaune with a maniac look in her eyes and Winter Schnee did the same to Nora. Using their semblances they covered each and every inch of the two’s superhuman physiques! Making them glisten and glow in the sunlight, highlighting their beauty to a godly extent!

Many in the crowd could no longer take it and fainted on the spot, in fact so vast was the spell put on them, even those in Mistral, Atlas, and Vacuo trembled in ecstasy knowing something freaking hot was happening. Half the crowd then fainted, Pyrrha and Ruby were just one of the many casualties.

Winter and Glynda scurried quickly out of the arena to join the screaming masses as the Jaune and Nora began stretching, knowing their job done.

Nora rolled her shoulders, hopping in place. “Last chance to back out, Jaune. I won’t think any less of you.”

Jaune arched his back, his hands on his hips, stretching till he heard a gratifying pop. “Oh? Is that mercy from the queen, I hear? How rare. I’m afraid I have to refuse,” Jaunes eyes narrowed a Nora’s own. “A king never backs down.”

Nora’s smile could cut a man down. “Oh well, I tried.” And then she crushed two apple sized lightning dust crystals in her hands, lightning dancing across her body, eyes and hair which shot up like a middle finger to gravity, and she shivered in masochistic pleasure. “Oh yeah, that’s the stuff.” She cracks her neck. “When I win, I’m snorting that shit off your dick!”

Jaune stomps a foot down, a shock-wave sending dust flying away from him, as he squared up, his aura flaring as he amped up it up. “Don’t threaten me with a good time Nora, you’ll just make me fight harder~”

“Hehehe,” Then with a crack of thunder, the ground where Nora once stood crumpled, a series of foot prints broke the ground in a straight towards Jaune before Nora blurred into sight before Jaune throwing a right jab at his jaw!

Jaune however felt more than saw her, as his aura dangled a spider thin thread of awareness of where Nora was coming. Tilting his head to the side avoiding the jab, and then bringing up his left arm to block her left cross.

He put up his guard as she had him on the defensive, as Nora sent a avalanche of jabs to prod his defense. He felt her tiny, dense hands hit his aura clad arms like a automatic shotgun! Each blow sending him inching ever so slightly back.

But, his defense held, no matter the number of punches she could send, she couldn’t break his defense yet! So he waits and watched for her to over extend.

Nora felt a flash of danger in her aura sense, and jumped back over ten feet just as Jaune nearly grabbed her wrist, a move that would have left her at the mercy of his superior reach.

Jaune saw his chance and rushed Nora, sending his own valley of jabs, but keeping the superior range of his arms in account to send punches that put him a much lower risk than she was by staying out of her reach.

Nora chose to block the first set of jabs, and instantly regretted it, as Jaune may have been much slower than Nora sending out maybe one punch per five of her own, his superior range, mass, and aura amplification let him hit almost five times harder than her! Each of his hands glowing with primordial light, each hit releasing a shock wave of sheer force, each punch feeling like a artillery shell from an Atlas Warship, and they only grew harder to endure as she could feel Jaune’s aura amping higher and higher.

Nora made a tactical decison to keep herself in the fight, and let one punch hit her downward into the chest, just as she leaned back and jumped! She was launched across the arena, but that’s what she wanted, to get space.

She wiped out across the dirt, but soon regained control, and clawed her hands into the dirt and pulled herself into a crouch. She focused her electric power and her semblance, shifting her allocation of power from strength to speed, stamina, and reflexes. She just couldn’t hit hard enough to fight Jaune on equal ground without Magnihild, but weapons weren’t allowed in Leadership Challenges, but she could definitely out speed him and possibly, out last him, and if nothing else leverage her superior fighting experience to win.

Jaune felt more than saw her change in stance, as a gust of wind hit him and with it what felt like a thousand hits to his solar plexus. A gasp was forced out him, as his amped up danger sense could no longer keep track of Nora. He re-speced near instantly and put his perception into defense, he couldn’t keep track of Nora and defend against at the same time. He crouched and guarded letting her hit like a lightning.

But, so what if she was lightning? He’d be the earth that grounded her!

He could feel her chipping away at his aura, even as he amped its regeneration. He smiled with pride, but knew he couldn’t play defensive forever. She’d wear him down.

Nora hit him with everything she had, making sure to hit consecutively in the same spot so he’d really feel it. But, it didn’t feel like she was making a real dent in his reserves. Then she saw it, a slight tremble in his left calf.

She lunged forward and kick his tree trunk of leg a dozen-dozen times, then it went flying like she wanted. Jaune’s body leaving the earth, she smirked, didn’t matter how good your defense was, if you’re in the air you’re at gravity's mercy, and gravity is a bitch.

Nora got behind him and put her power into strength again and let him have it. Throwing him up sky high, Jaune disappearing like a twinkling star. That wasn’t the end of it thought, and Nora shattered the ground following him up.

Jaune never knew the Emerald forest was so pretty from a couple thousand feet up, but you learn something knew everyday. But, what he did know is that Nora would follow up that assault with something gruesome. So he re-amped his awareness, by twice, by tens times, by hundreds times, by a thousand! Then he felt it that the spider thread awareness widening into an almost prescience level of knowledge as he knew not saw where Nora was coming from.

He could laugh, that it was her throwing him up here that gave him the chance to actually track her. He followed the threads of awareness, and looked above as Nora tried to hit him with a spinning double axe kick to his head.

He caught her by the feet the moment gravity renewed her hold on the two, he gave her a wink, and as they fell he spun her by the feet faster and faster till he let her go, sending her down with a air shattering shock wave.

Nora hit the ground like a ginger meteor and she crumpled prone the last vestiges of semblance going out, her hair falling down, and a shock wave knocking over unfortunate watchers.

They wouldn’t get a chance to get back up soon, as Jaune landed on Nora with a shockwave as Jaune mounted her stomach, a hand cocked back.

“Still want to fight to be leader?” Jaune asked smiling, a glowing hand cocked.

“Nope!” Nora said cheerfully. “Maybe later~, but, that was the most fun I’ve had since I got here!”

“That’s great Nora!” Jaune said getting up. “Now is there anybody else that wants to fight me for leadership of team JNPR?”

“Yeah, I do!” Yang yelled out, striping out of her clothes, showing off two double DD’s.

“Me too!” Coco said stripping in tandem.

“Oh, whys that?” Jaune asks.

“Well you can’t strip naked, and fight, then leave! We came here to watch y’all fuck! Now you’re going to leave us blue balled! Oh, hell no!” Yang says, while Coco nods.

“Then come get some!” Jaune said still naked and glistening!

AN: I had fun writing this. The original idea was Jaune and Nora getting oiled up and a wrestling, but it somehow turned into this.

After you’ve read these crystal meanings, I encourage you to spend some time gazing at and handling your crystals. Crystals are a hands-on, eyes-on, heart-on hobby. One of the best ways to study them is to visit with them. It sounds kooky, I know—but many stones will tell you all about themselves if you take the time to listen.

Collecting crystals is a blissful and transformative experience. Here at Grove and Grotto, our own crystal work has undeniably changed our lives for the better. But I never recommend crystal magick as a substitute for medical care. If you’re seriously ill or distressed, get qualified help before rock shopping, mmmmkay?

Here they are, in alphabetical order, 40 magickal stones and their metaphysical uses:

Amazonite

Sea-green Amazonite carries all sorts of positive meanings: Serenity, creativity, and brave self-expression. It is one of the best talismans for artists and performers. It clears self-doubt and inspires love of beauty. Amazonite is found in a pale celadon hue (see picture) in Brazil, China, and Africa. The bright turquoise variety is a new discovery and comes from Madagascar.

Amethyst

One of the most magickal stones on Earth, Amethyst is a favorite of witches, healers, shamans and seers. Purple is a color that is seldom found in nature, and Amethyst has an exquisite vibration to match its rare hue. Amethyst is great for meditation and for managing the emotions. It calms anxiety and balances fear and excess. Amethyst gently stimulates dreams and visions, inspiring you to become your highest self. There are countless colors and shapes of Amethyst, each with slightly different properties.

Angelite

A lovely stone with a lovely name, Angelite is formed by the compression of Celestite over millions of years. (Yes, it is actually condensed heaven!) Angelite is soothing and uplifting. It is a popular choice among Angelic healers, channelers, and lightworkers. Angelite can assist in making contact with ancient guides and smoothing the way toward higher states of awareness. Don’t get Angelite wet—it didn’t wait all these millennia just to turn into calcite in your jacuzzi, thanks.

Apatite

Apatite is a semi-precious gem that can be found in a wide range of colors, most often green or blue. Apatite is a stone of confidence, truth, and creativity. It is used by energy workers to help balance overactive energy centers and stimulate underactive ones. Apatite is a wonderful crystal for working with the Third Eye and Throat Chakras. It helps awaken and develop gifts of clairvoyance, telepathy, and lucid dreaming. Apatite brings mental clarity and improved communication. It makes it easier to speak to others with authenticity and directness.

Black Onyx

Black Onyx is a glossy dark gemstone that evokes the deep and restful properties of Earth. It is a stabilizing, balancing stone said to assist with mastery of the body's energy. Black Onyx can strengthen determination and willpower, and help bring wisdom in difficult circumstances.

Black Tourmaline

One of the premier protective stones, Black Tourmaline has long been used as a shield against evil spirits and negative energy. A Root Chakra stone, it helps in grounding and releasing stress and emotional baggage. (It is especially useful for empaths.) Black Tourmaline is also considered a lucky stone—rub a piece of Black Tourmaline when you need a little extra boost of luck!

Blue Aventurine

Blue Aventurine is a naturally colored Quartz crystal. Sometimes called "Blue Quartz" it gets its color and shimmer from tiny inclusions of other minerals. It combines the energy-boosting properties of Quartz with the soothing quality of the color blue. In crystal magick, Blue Aventurine is used for stress relief and healing of the heart and mind. It gently enhances communication and stimulates creativity.

Blue Calcite

Blue Calcite is a calming, relaxing stone with an especially high vibration. It is used in rituals of healing and purification, or carried as an amulet to relieve pain and anxiety. Blue Calcite corresponds to the element of Water and the Throat Chakra. It gently amplifies energy and assists in recalling dreams and astral travel. Calcite is also found in yellow, green, orange, and pink varieties—but Blue Calcite is certainly the most beautiful.

Blue Goldstone

Blue Goldstone (or Blue Sandstone) is a dark blue, almost purple stone with tiny sparkles throughout. It is formed by adding copper salts to molten glass using a unique cooling process. This synthetic gem was reputedly accidentally created by Italian monks practicing alchemy, hence the name Goldstone. Despite its laboratory origins, Blue Goldstone is a very popular choice for mystical items. A piece of Blue Goldstone looks just like a midnight sky full of stars! It is an inspiring stone that encourages confidence and courage, and places one’s dreams within reach.

Carnelian

Carnelian is a red-orange, semiprecious stone that has been prized since ancient times for its captivating color. Its bold energy brings a rush of warmth and joy that lingers, stimulating courage and desire. Carnelian resonates with the Sacral Chakra, and is traditionally worn to inspire love and passion. Carnelian may be solid orange or have red and white bands—the banded variety is sometimes called Red Agate.

Citrine

Citrine is a member of the Quartz family of minerals. Golden and sparkling like a drop of sunlight, Citrine is said to bring the solar qualities of warmth and happiness to the wearer. Because Citrine resonates with the Solar Plexus Chakra, it stimulates vitality, willpower, and personal strength. Citrine is said to be one of the only crystals that cannot hold negativity, and experience bears this out. Try to charge a piece of Citrine with crappy vibes sometime and see how long you can keep a frown on your face. Quite a lot of the Citrine on the market is heat-treated Amethyst—the two are chemically similar and are sometimes found together in a stone called Ametrine.

Clear Quartz

Clear Quartz is possibly the most versatile and magickal of all gemstones. Clear Quartz amplifies energy and thought, acting as a powerful aid to psychic perception. It balances and revitalizes the subtle bodies and brings all the chakras into harmony. Clear Quartz makes an excellent “memory stone” because of its ability to absorb, store, and release energy. It may be used in combination with any other stones, enhancing their effects. Clear Quartz is often used in crystal grids to direct and amplify the energy of the other stones. Special designations like Record Keeper Quartz, Lemurian Quartz, and Phantom Quartz are sometimes used. They may refer either to the shape of the crystal or the patterns of inclusions found within.

Dalmatian Stone

Dalmatian Stone (sometimes called Dalmatian Jasper) is a beige stone with black spots like a puppy dog. You might think, then, that this stone is related to the doggy world--and you would be right. Dalmatian stone is used to cultivate loyalty and enhance family bonds. An earthy stone, it helps ground and connect you to the here and now. Some people use Dalmatian Stone to boost communication with canine familiars.

Fluorite

Fluorite is a highly structured crystal that may be clear, green, purple, blue, yellow or a mix of these colors. Green Fluorite is the most common. It has a fresh, clean vibe that matches its spring-green color. Fluorite offers an organized, high spiritual vibration to any person, place, or object it touches. It helps to disperse chaotic or stagnant energy. Fluorite may be used to cleanse and balance the aura, boost mental acuity, and protect the bearer on the physical and psychic levels. Green Fluorite resonates with the Heart chakra and promotes feelings of abundance and well-being. This unearthly stone also helps interdimensional communication, especially with Nature Spirits and Fae folk.

Garnet

Garnet is a stone of love, strength, glory, and devotion. Garnet has been prized since at least Egyptian times, when it was known as the "Blood of Isis." Dark red in color, Garnet is considered to be Root Chakra stone with a protective vibration. Use in crystal grids and charms for psychic shielding. Garnet is said to help balance the energy system and encourage love and loyalty.

Green Aventurine

Green Aventurine is a quartz-based stone colored by mineral inclusions. It is one of the best all-around crystals for prosperity, happiness, and well-being. The name comes from the Italian word for chance, and carrying the stone is supposed to protect a person from bad luck. Aventurine is linked to the Heart Chakra. It promotes creativity, contentedness, and feelings of abundance.

Hematite

Hematite, a natural form of iron, is a strongly grounding and protective gemstone. The ancients noted it for its resemblance to blood, and the name means “blood stone.” Hematite is common in protective amulets because of its mirror-like quality—it is said to deflect any negativity deflected at the wearer. (Some also use Hematite mirrors for scrying.) Synthetic Hematite (known as Hematine or Hemalyke) is often carved into shapes for jewelry. Just about every teenager loves Hematite, and that’s probably no coincidence. It is excellent stone for anyone experiencing mental or emotional strain.

Howlite

Howlite is a white stone with wispy veins of grey. (Howlite is frequently dyed to make imitation Turquoise which is how most people first encounter the stone.) This humble mineral is useful for calming an overactive or troubled mind. It aids in dispelling fear, resentment, anxiety, and anger and replaces them with gentle self-awareness. It is known as a stone of wisdom and compromise. Working with Howlite can help you learn to communicate difficult issues without causes offense. Some also use Howlite as a sleeping aid.

Labradorite

Labradorite is a variety of feldspar known for its iridescent optical effects, or “now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t” flashes of color. Usually green-grey, the stone has spectral shades of blue, green, and copper. In crystal lore, Labradorite brings deep spiritual insight and connection with the other realms. It stimulates mental and intuitive gifts and acts upon the entire energy body. Labradorite is also associated with Faery trickery and portal magick. High-grade Labradorite is sometimes marketed as Spectrolite.

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is a deep blue semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its rare color. It often includes tiny specks of gold-colored pyrite, which make it shimmer like a sky full of stars. Lapis Lazuli is regarded as a stone of harmony and truth. Its deep, celestial blue remains the symbol of royalty and honor, gods and power, spirit and vision. Lapis Lazuli resonates with the Third Eye chakra, expanding psychic awareness and stimulating attunement to higher wisdom.

Lepidolite

A variety of Mica, Lepidolite is a lilac-grey stone with a subtle shimmer. In crystal healing, Lepidolite is a stone of serenity. It contains the element Lithium, a natural mood enhancer. Lepidolite is said to relieve stress, assist with healing and balancing, and gently encourage spiritual growth.

Mahogany Obsidian

Mahogany Obsidian is a little-known version of the popular volcanic stone. It gets its brick-red color from the inclusion of small amounts of iron oxide. Originating within the depths of the Earth, Mahogany Obsidian resonates with the Root Chakra. It supports integrity and courage, even under difficult circumstances. Use Mahogany Obsidian for protection magick, ancestor work, and underworld journeying.

Malachite

One of the most prized ornamental stones, Malachite is characterized by its green bands and whorls in a variety of patterns. Malachite has a long list of positive effects for the crystal user: Boosting personal energy, stimulating creativity, blocking negative emotions, and transmuting trauma into wisdom. Malachite is an ore of copper, the metal of Venus. As a Venus stone, Malachite guides you to appreciate the beauty of the natural world and engage deeply with its pleasures. Malachite is also associated with wealth—both material possessions and the spiritual wealth that comes with experiences of love.

Moonstone

Found in soft shades of white, pink, and bone, Moonstone is soothing to look and to hold. Moonstone is connected to the magic of the Moon, and is traditionally used as an amulet for travelers, a token of love, and a symbol of mysticism. Moonstone is said to comfort and soften the heart while it stimulates the psychic mind. Rainbow Moonstone, with its iridescent flashes, is especially prized as a stone of Lunar magick.

Moss Agate

Moss Agate, also known as Tree Agate or Dendritic Agate, is a semi-opaque stone with swirls of white and green that look like moss. All Agates are respected as healing and protective stones, but Moss Agate is a special favorite of green Witches. Prehnite

Prehnite is a yellow-green stone that may be translucent or opaque. It often contains needles of black Rutile. One of the best stones for healers and wisdom-seekers, Prehnite helps you confront tough realities with patience and grace. It helps to heal the heart, removing old hurts and blockages from the energetic body. It has the power to “heal the healer” and is a valuable amulet for empaths. Prehnite supports magickal learning at a safe and sustainable pace. It unlocks gifts of empathy and clairsentience. Some users report that it aids in past-life recall.

Pyrite

Pyrite is a cubic mineral often called “fool’s gold” —but only a fool would neglect its magickal uses. Ruby Fuchsite

Lake Hillier, Western Australia

Last week I posted about the beautfiul blue-green lakes of Mt. Kelimutu, Indonesia here:http://on.fb.me/1ADj7V8. This week I thought I’d cover another colourful waterbody - Lake Hillier.

Lake Hillier is located on Middle Island, part of the Recherche Archipelago which is found off the southern coast of Western Australia. The Lake is particularly striking against the green forest, white sand, and neighbouring turquoise ocean. It’s a small lake, measuring 600 m (1968 ft) by 250 m (820 ft). As with the the nearby Pink Lake in WA and Lake Retba in Senegal, the unusual colour is likely caused by halophytic algae - Dunaliella salina, pink halobacteria and high salt content. However, this cause hasn’t been confirmed at Lake Hiller.

So, how does algae turn water red? When the water level drops, water temperature, light availability and salinity concentration increase. This stimulates the algae to produce and store carotenoids (xanothophylls and carotenes), pigments that help protect the organism against oxidative stress. This causes the ordinarily green algae to appear red or pink.

If you cast back to our Kelimutu Lakes post, in the comments section we mentioned that the colour of these unusually hued lakes are usually affected by seasonal variations related to water level, temperature and chemistry. However, the water of Lake Hillier has a couple of unique features: it retains it’s brilliant colour when bottled (unlike other pink lakes) and the hue is unaffected by seasonal water fluctuations - it stays brilliant pink year round.

Premises: You would think Abnur and Pulasia Tharn see each other every minute of every day on account of not just being married but both sitting on the Elder Council. However, nothing is farther from the truth: between field research and studying, days slip by and even weeks may pass unnoticed. Fortunately, they generally know where to find each other.

The Baandari trading post was a modest, transient settlement in northern Malabal Tor, near the pass to Reaper’s Marsh. It had once been an Imperial border town but it hadn’t been on the edge of the Empire for five generations and these days few of its buildings were permanent. The still imposing, stone-wrought gatehouse with its surly, square guard towers loomed over the only road into town as a stark reminder of that past.

Remnants of the town wall connected it to the Census and Excise Office which was now shared by the settlement its small Mages’ and Fighters’ guilds. The Mages’ guild was so modest that they couldn’t provide the usual teleportation services through a lack of resident mages. And the Fighters’ guild their training facilities comprised the uneven court behind the old building with tarp overhangs to shield against the rain. Their permanent proximity resulted in the majority of the carefree town its shenanigans.

On the other side of the gatehouse, the Silver Moons inn leaned across the alley towards the gatehouse like an old friend. Renowned for its fine, regional food and drinks, it offered a warm bed at a fair price to all those who preferred to not spend the night under canvas and cloth. The ever-changing tents of the Baandari Khajiit and Bosmer travellers dotted the trampled foliage beside impromptu paths and bazaars, creating cheerful, colourful chaos at the heart of the town.

All residences were impermanent. All except one. The miniaturised Imperial estate sat up on the hillside at the edge of town, snug between a Valenwood giant’s roots and the mountains, overlooking the merry mayhem below. It had once belonged to the town’s publican, whose name had been lost as quickly as their body the minute the Empire’s grip on Valenwood had slackened. Decades had passed before it had obtained a new owner, for no one wanted to live in the unpopular taxer her residence.

Its private, cobbled path crossed the main road near the Marsh Gate and stopped short in front of the Wayshrine of Kynareth, Divine of wind, rain and wayfarers too. The Khajiit called her Kenarthi and the Bosmer Kaan. The wayshrine was carved and hung with their epigraphs and tokens, its faded Imperial inscriptions indecipherable underneath. The tokens were wishes, of a sort, or prayers, maybe. They believed that, should they come loose by themselves, the loved one they had thought of while stringing it would once more cross their path. Or, as it hung there, remain safe while away from their side.

Among the many colourful bangles and bone fetishes, hung a neat strip of red cloth. Its precise knot was all but loose. As it moved and tugged in the breeze, coming ever further undone, sunlight glinted off the gold-threaded diamond-shape sewn onto it.

A steady stream of wayfarers and travelling merchants passed in and out of the modest settlement at all times. Many on foot, most carrying packs or pulling handcarts. Few with pack animals and fewer still astride mounts. It was this which made the three travellers on horseback stand out as they passed under the ancient gatehouse. Their horses were road-worn but their tack was fine, the animals their coats meticulously clipped under the dust of travel. Three in all they were. The lady riding up front directed her horse with confidence, her gaze sweeping the market before resting on the lone path up the hillside. She wore a loose, drab travelling overdress, though gold glinted at her wrists and fingers. She had pulled her crimson shawl across her head, shielding her light skin from the burning afternoon sun. The two soldiers riding close behind her were dressed in silver and crimson, their armour rattling with the horses’ steps.

As they rode by the wayshrine, the small token tugged free. It turned and tumbled as it danced in the air, carried up the hillside to their destination by Kynareth’s breath. It folded around an iron bar of the walled enclosure and flapped there for a moment.

The garden was dominated by the jungle foliage characteristic of Malabal Tor. However, their arrangement was too appealing, too neatly away from the garden path, to be truly overgrown. Someone had spared no expense to make it look as if every expense had been spared. Sequestered amid the rampant foliage and cradled between the colossal roots sat the modest home, erected from timber and lime, on a base of river stone. It mimicked far nobler Imperial manors with its austere architecture, high beamed ceiling and a red-tile roof. It even had a miniature wooden veranda, complete with sturdy overhang and scrollwork engraved balustrade.

In one corner of the veranda stood an easel with an abandoned, half-finished painting, an impression of colossal pink and turquoise mushrooms alongside a smear of blue water on its otherwise blank canvas. A stool with a stained rag and a myriad of poorly closed jars stood beside it. Faded, yellow Black Horse Courier pages had been put down on the floorboards but it had not protected the wood from two violently purple stains.

In the other corner lounged the owner of the diminutive estate, plus two. Abnur Tharn was reading a book. On account of the sweltering, humid weather, he wore only knee-length breeches and a Khajiiti kaftan which looked like a lightweight, coat-like variety of his usual robes. The book was one of a series which concerned the published journeys of the famous Imperial explorer and scholar Sevina Sulla. This particular one detailed her travels through Valenwood and her papers on the Pact Bosmer of southern Malabal Tor, based on her six-year stay with them. It was a heavy tome and Abnur had propped it up against the Bosmer sprawling across his lap. Ramira Don rested backwards with her elbows on the balustrade, leaning all the way back to catch some last sunshine. A dried streak of turquoise stained her freckled cheek. She was wearing a loincloth decorated with Bosmeri designs - and nothing besides. Near them, amid a sprawl of pillows, Ro'ranno loafed in his bare fur. The Khajiit purred contently and took another draw from the skooma bubbler in their midst. The opiate vapour had gathered under the overhang, its purple-tinged whisps twisting lazily just above their heads.

The crimson strip of cloth pulled itself free and tumbled on, between the vines and over the path, to land across the Bosmer’s small, freckled nose. Ramira opened her eyes, her gaze cross-eyed as she looked at it. She snatched it from her face and pushed herself up into a sitting position in one smooth motion. “It came loose!”

A huff escaped Abnur because a knee went unpleasant places and the book slipped from his grasp as a result. It landed upside down on the wooden floorboards with the crunch of many creased pages. Abnur pushed himself upright in an attempt to pry her knee from his crotch but he immediately slouched again. His thoughts slurred and he didn’t even try to pick up the book. “It’s been storming and I didn’t tie it very tight.”

Ro’ranno took the bubbler’s mouthpiece from his lips to speak. “This one thinks that doesn’t matter.”

Ramira leaned down to pick up the skooma bubbler and nestled it in her lap instead.

“Rremi!” Ro’ranno exclaimed as the mouthpiece was jerked unceremoniously from between his teeth.

Ramira ignored him and put it in her mouth, handing the second one to the battlemage. Abnur put an arm around her shoulders and took a long draw, inhaling the fragrant smoke. Ramira made herself comfortable against him, careful to hold the skooma bubbler’s water bowl upright.

Ro’ranno sat up, his fur bristling. “You can sharre!”

Abnur rolled his head to his other shoulder to look at the Khajiit. Smoke escaped his mouth as he spoke. “You can wait.”

The Khajiit pouted magnificently but when they ignored him, he let himself drop back down amid the pillows.

Abnur produced a coin-sized brass medallion from the pocket of his kaftan and flicked it across his fingers, watching it glint in the afternoon sun.

“What’s that?” Ramira stuck her hands down and rocked forward.

“Ramira!”

She flinched at his raised voice, the wood piece falling from her mouth. Seeing his chance, Ro’ranno snatched it up before it hit the floor.

“Will you stop doing that?” Abnur wheezed as he pushed her back onto her bum and her weight away from his mistreated loins.

Ramira hunched her shoulders, her gaze down and her hands in her lap. “I didn't mean to.”

He clenched his jaw but then sighed and gave her shoulder a tug towards him. “I know.”

Ramira curled up against him, her nose and cheek against his chest. He looked back at the medallion, a smirk twitching the corner of his thin lips up. Perhaps, the priestess had managed to teach him something, after all.

Abnur leaned down and pressed a kiss against the corner of Ramira's forehead. “Klutz."

“What’s that?” she repeated, her eyes on the medallion. Something about her curious look made him think of a little magpie.

“What’s what?” Abnur twisted his hand, showing an empty palm.

Ramira frowned and lifted her head. She took his hand in both of hers and inspected it from every side. “The coin?”

Abnur crooked an eyebrow, his smile turning wry. “Coin?”

“This one saw it too!” Ro’ranno sat up, the mouthpiece falling from his lips. They were both staring at his hand now.

Abnur leaned towards the Khajiit and pulled him closer by an ear. Ro’ranno’s nose wrinkled in a protesting pout. Abnur shook him by the ear, peering down into it. He flipped the medallion up between index and middle finger as if he’d taken it from Ro’ranno’s ear. “You mean this coin?”

“Yes!” Ramira smiled broadly.

“It was a gift.” Abnur flipped the medallion through his fingers before holding it out to Ramira.

She took it, holding the brass coin up and admiring the finely crafted lily device on it in the sunlight. Tuum cor aperi, it read along the edge in fine Imperial script: ‘open your heart’. She recognised it, of course. It was a medallion of Dibella. She looked up at him and grinned. “The goddess of sex!”

Abnur tilted his head, suppressing a smirk. “You’re not wrong.”

“This one wonders who it was a gift from?” Ro’ranno’s grin was distinctly lopsided, smoke escaping between his canines. Abnur beckoned and Ro’ranno gave him the second mouthpiece as he shifted his position to accommodate the distance, leaning against the inside of the battlemage’s knee.

“A very tall Orc,” Abnur said as he took a draw. "She's good with a battle axe and knows a thing or two about magic too."

Ramira tilted her head. “How tall?”

Abnur frowned, chewing the wood. He then held his hand up, at first level with his head and then quite a bit higher. Ramira’s eyes became large as moon sugar saucers. She looked from the medallion to Abnur and back. Ro’ranno tipped his head back to look at the indicated height, his mouth slightly open. “That one is very tall,” he said softly.

A snort of amusement escaped Abnur despite himself. “That she is.”

“You could invite her, sometime?” Ramira leaned towards him, her eyes glowing with poorly contained eagerness.

Abnur crooked an eyebrow and her mischievous grin turned wider still. He shook his head and reached up to stroke her freckled cheek, then tugged her ear. “Maybe I will, you randy little mer.”

She beamed as he pocketed the medallion. Abnur brought the mouthpiece to his lips but she dodged in between and took a draw instead. Smoke escaped her nose as she chuckled at his look. Ro’ranno stretched and purred rather loudly.

Ramira reached for the mouthpiece but Abnur moved it out of range at the last moment, a slow smirk stealing onto his face as he held it up. She frowned and sat up, trying to snatch it when he took another draw. However, he already held it high again. A determined little scowl creased her nose bridge as she climbed across his lap. She pulled herself up by his shoulder and then leaned onto it, her fingertips brushing past the wood. He pressed a kiss against her bare hip and stretched his arm just that little further.

The tip of Ramira’s tongue poked out between her lips as she aimed. Shifting her weight she pushed herself up by leaning entirely onto his shoulder, snatching the mouthpiece from his hand. She smiled in triumph but it was short-lived. She overbalanced and slipped. A pitched yelp escaped her as she clamped onto his arm and neck in reflex. Abnur latched onto the balustrade and tried to compensate for the Bosmer’s shifting weight but failed at both. His fingers slipped from the wood and grabbed a hold of the stack of books beside them instead, tipping them over. Ro’ranno jumped away with a hiss as they fell.

The world span around Abnur until it came to an abrupt standstill as the back of his head struck the floorboards, stars exploding into his view. Around him the thumps of falling books made the floorboards shudder. He closed his eyes and grimaced, contemplating how many spines had broken in the fall and if his was included in that.

When he opened his eyes, Ramira sat perched on his chair, peering down at him. “What are you doing?”

Abnur pursed his lips. “Appreciating the solidity of Imperial architecture and the fragility of the human condition.”

Ramira leaned her head sideways and blinked. She climbed off the chair and laid down next to him. She looked up and frowned at the overhang above. “I don’t see it.”

Abnur rolled his eyes up and sighed, shaking his head minutely.

Moonsugar whinnied, making all three of them look up. There was movement at the gate and within moments it was pushed open by a legionnaire. Skooma tossed her head in recognition, whinnying as well.

Ramira sat up and smiled when she saw who entered, pleased. She looked down at Abnur, who still sprawled on his back. “See? Kaan promised and she always keeps them.”

Ro’ranno jumped up to greet the new arrivals. He waved excitedly as he ran down the path. “Lady Pulasia!”

The sweet scent of skooma reached Pulasia Tharn before the nude Khajiit did.

Second Life for Shipping Containers: Selling Bao Buns and Baked Goods To drum up publicity for his downtown Indianapolis food hall, Craig Baker posted photos of orange, turquoise and hot pink shipping containers on Instagram. They might seem like an odd way to promote a food emporium and culinary incubator, but the steel boxes piqued locals’ curiosity. “They’re very much like Legos, right?” Mr. Baker, an entrepreneur and a chef, said of the shipping containers inside the AMP, an artisan marketplace and a former utility garage where vendors will sell PB&J sandwiches, Ethiopian cold-brewed coffee and chocolate-covered strawberries coated in edible glitter. “We’re building our own little village inside a giant garage,” he said of the 40,000-square-foot space, which also contains a full-service restaurant, an open-air bar, a community prep kitchen and a stage. “People want to see what you built.” Shipping containers have been heralded as a trend in residential design, where they are used for modular homes, but they’re also winning over commercial planners who have used them to liven up the bars, cafes and restaurants within developments anchored by food halls. When used in industrial areas or port cities, the containers give the projects a sense of community, critical in a pandemic when retailers and restaurants are shutting their doors. But the shipping containers also present challenges for developers, including adapting them for indoor uses and making them safe for guests and employees during a pandemic. Most food halls rely on shipping containers to populate the vendor stalls, but some also use them as a canvas for art installations or as common spaces. As food halls proliferate, builders are using forward-looking design to stand out from the pack to avoid resembling a sterile cafeteria. “Food halls are a dime a dozen these days; there’s a lot of them doing the exact same thing,” said David Weitz, a co-founder of Carpe Real Estate Partners, which this month opened Oasis, a food and entertainment hub built on the site of a former ship engine repair firm in Miami’s artsy Wynwood neighborhood. Six yellow, pink and lavender shipping containers are used to sell bao buns and gyros while 16 more form a 75-foot-tall central Tower Bar painted in the same colors by the Spanish artist Antonyo Marest. The Oasis is one of a dozen food halls that use shipping containers and one of several opening this year, along with the AMP in Indianapolis and BLVD MRKT near Los Angeles. There are 242 food halls operating in the United States, a jump from 222 at the start of the pandemic, and cities have been relying on their creative concepts and communal dining spaces to re-energize dormant neighborhoods. At least 190 more are in the works, according to a Cushman & Wakefield report. The trend started in 2013 with the Downtown Container Park, a project conceived by Tony Hsieh, the Zappos chief executive, who died last November. The development, which was central to the $350 million revitalization of downtown Las Vegas, inspired other developers like Barney Santos, who will open BLVD MRKT this summer in the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Montebello after seven years of planning. “I remember seeing the container park and feeling so inspired by the design,” Mr. Santos said of the Las Vegas development. “I wanted to recreate that experience in my neighborhood, to do something no one would expect to see.” Developers like Mr. Santos said using shipping containers was a design choice rather than a cost-saving one. Used shipping containers cost $2,000 to $3,000, but builders can expect to pay five times that amount to add windows, doors, support structures, and kitchen and other equipment to pass local health inspections. That makes the cost comparable to installing regular food stalls. At many indoor food halls, stalls often look the same except for a few variations in signage. “The creativity that opens up is the most curious,” said Mr. Baker, the project lead for the AMP. “You’re giving them a canvas, and you say: ‘Look, here’s your space. What are you going to do with it?’” That resonated with Joanna Wilson, owner of an AMP dessert shop, Punkin’s Pies. Ms. Wilson chose colors that matched her brand, adding black-and-white floors and awnings to the hot pink shipping container as well as a sparkly chandelier that shines like her glitter-covered strawberries. The semi-enclosed space also allows her to tuck away most of her kitchen equipment. “I’m trying to make it look dainty and neat,” Ms. Wilson said. “I don’t like showing my refrigerator, microwave and the kitchen area.” The design choice makes sense in major port cities like Long Beach, Calif., where the developer Howard CDM built SteelCraft, one of the earlier incarnations of a shipping container dining venue. “There’s shipping containers everywhere” in Long Beach, said Kimberly Gros, the founder of SteelCraft, which manages two other Southern California locations, in Garden Grove and Bellflower. “So we thought we would create a structure that was different, that really connected to us.” Reusing materials appeals to many consumers, both from an environmental and aesthetic standpoint. “I think when you take an item and subvert its original intent and create an entirely new use for that item, that’s always interesting,” said Erik Rutter, a co-founder of Carpe Real Estate Partners. For indoor food halls like the AMP, bright hues liven up an otherwise gray space while maintaining an industrial feel. “The color palette for the containers really pops,” Mr. Baker said. But there are a few caveats to using shipping containers in food-centric destinations. Some developers advise sticking to outdoor uses to avoid complex retrofitting. In an outdoor setting, oven ventilation can go straight from the oven hood through the roof, which is the most common setup. But for a food hall at the bottom of a 50-story building, the process becomes more complicated because the venting may have to go up 50 stories, said Mr. Weitz of Carpe. Most developers have stuck to outdoor uses, but some food halls in the Midwest, such as the AMP, Detroit Shipping Company and Parlor Food Hall in Kansas City, Mo., have placed them indoors. Design experts say the key is to stick to bakeries and other light cooking uses indoors instead of, say, a shop that requires a deep fryer. That’s why the AMP used shipping containers for businesses with limited cooking requirements and conventional stalls for those that required more, said John Albrecht, a principal at the architecture firm DKGR, which designed the AMP. Coping with the pandemic is also a bigger challenge for indoor food halls where guests often jockey for coveted seats. Most have pushed takeout and delivery services and have reconfigured their seating to enable social distancing, said Phil Colicchio, a co-leader of Cushman & Wakefield’s food and beverage consulting group. But perhaps the biggest struggle for shipping container-led developments is staying relevant as more open. “The worry is that the more that go this route, the more the spaces start to look alike,” said Trip Schneck, also a co-leader of Cushman & Wakefield’s food and beverage group. Expect shipping container developments to keep popping up, especially as cities identify more industrial areas in need of revitalization. But it won’t be long before architects identify the next big thing, said Howard CDM’s president, Martin D. Howard. “Brilliant thinkers and creative minds will come up with other ways to make it interesting for people to come out and eat and drink and have a good time,” he said.
