Help us celebrate the fourth annual UOVO Prize winner, Suneil Sanzgiri. He is an artist, researcher, and filmmaker. Spanning experimental video and film, animations, essays, and installations, Sanzgiri’s work contends with questions of identity, heritage, culture, and diaspora in relation to structural violence and anticolonial struggles across the Global South. 

We look forward to sharing more about Sanzgiri’s first solo exhibition, which will debut later this year.

"That's Not a Fried Egg..." Uovo in Raviolo (Egg Yolk Ravioli with Ricotta, Shredded Herbs, and Pancetta with a Butter Sauce.)

I'm a Windows OS user, so the little searchbar doodle reminded me that today is World Pasta Day. And because it is World Pasta Day I thought: "There must be a pasta with egg, right? Isn't there a ravioli where they put a whole egg yolk in there?" And lo, there was.

So I drew it. I desperately want to try this dish but never been to a place that serves it. Maybe I'll try to make some myself one day.

Hopefully @lady-quen's breadbugs don't mind another runny yolk.

I wasn't actually sure if the saucy stuff was just oil from the pancetta or if it was its own sauce. Didn't feel like looking at the recipe but I decided I would want to eat this with a light buttery sauce, maybe a hint of garlic in it, so that's what it is and you can fight me.

Inspiration at the origin of everything.

Cosmic man is within each of us as within our soul we are the origin.

The inspiration comes from the story of Phanes, or Fanes (light). He was a Greek ancestral god, also called Protogonos ("the first born") and Erikepaios ("giver of life"), he was a primeval deity of procreation and the origin of life in the Orphic cosmogony, a religious movement that arose in Greece towards the 6th century B.C. around the figure of Orpheus. In the Italian tradition Phanes was instead linked to the Roman Saturn of origins. Emerged at the dawn of the universe from the cosmic egg laid by Chronos (Time) and Ananke (Destiny, or Italian Fatum, not even the Gods can oppose anything), as the first and only principle, it was a hermaphrodite and everything was generated from it .

Oscar yi Hou is an artist, a writer, and a self-described “internet kid.” 

At 24 years old, yi Hou is the third winner of the UOVO Prize, bringing 11 of his most recent paintings to Oscar yi Hou: East of sun, west of moon. In it, you’ll find traces of the Liverpool-born artist’s interests, identity, and inspirations. 

His practice combines painting, calligraphy, and poetry. Image and text are both central to the artwork yi Hou produces as language anchors his exploration of what it means to be a child of immigrant Chinese parents as well as part of the East Asian diaspora in the United States. 

In the center of the exhibition, you’ll also find the namesake poem he wrote that alludes to the feeling of being in between places and identities, shown on slide 2.

Il fortunato animaletto però non perse del tutto la sua natura, e continuò a deporre le sue uova. La gratitudine alla dea per averlo salvato, lo porto nella primavera seguente a iniziare a decorare amorevolmente il suo uovo per regalarglielo: fu così che l’entusiasta Eostre chiese al coniglio di onorare il mondo intero con le sue uova portate in dono, così che tutto il pianeta potesse provare la sua stessa gioia.
