Hemmer Rant: Part 2 (Action?)

TL:DR- Where are the Hemmer petitions I'm finding out about? What are Star Trek bigwig addresses so I can blast their mailboxes? How long until we get a disabled character that isn't just another prop?

This is going to be disjointed as fuck as I'm honestly on day 4 of having CoVID (for the second time this year) and so I apologize ahead of time for whatever shit my brain decides to spew. (I've already backspaced through words I definitely know how to spell more than I usually do!)

Firstly, I've been made aware that there are petitions a-foot for fans to share their disgust at Hemmer being killed in such a way that supports all of the clichéd and harmful archetypes of disabled "representation" in media that often shadow potentially amazing characters with disability characteristics.

So...

Could someone kindly direct me to these petitions so that I can go off...er...I mean add my name and thoughts?

Secondly, are there physical addresses to put our rightful anger in paper and send them off? I would absolutely adore flooding mailboxes in order to at the very least tell the "big wigs" what a grave error they made in planning this character's demise while also touting disability representation. They might not even know what they did. They need to know. The whole of media needs to know.

Characters with disabilities are not just tools for plot or other characters. When you write and display a disabled character (or one that is representing a disability, like Hemmer) and you don't allow them a full and satisfying story of just being a happy person existing in life you are inadvertently telling others with disabilities that this is their role as well.

Art imitates life and visa versa. We can create perception and change ideas by representing people in certain ways. There is a long history of getting culture to accept the Other by introducing representations of those Other in media as being accepted and as having lives of autonomy and respect. There is also an even longer history of taking the Other and doubling down on their Otherness by continuing harmful stereotypes and writing them in ways that they are only redeemable at the sacrifice of themselves in some way, shape, or form.

This needs to stop. Disability representation needs to get BETTER. It's past time for this. Star Trek is supposed to be better than this.

Lastly, (see, I didn't lose track of this post entirely) it seems that while Bruce is not speaking out publicly there is a sense I am getting that he supports this discourse of the fans and the drive to get Hemmer back. The truth is, and this is very important to me to state, this is not Bruce Horak's fight. This is the fan's fight. He did his job existing. He did his job being present and visible. And he's still doing his job by being supportive to those who disagree in such deep ways with how the character was portrayed.

I, myself, am not disabled in a way that is visible. So I can only speak as an ally on these issues. But even I can see that Hemmer's death was a rehash of so many disappointing storylines that drop the ball when it comes to disability representation.

Let's not let Star Trek off the hook for this one. This is super important. So Much Stuff is going on in the world right now, yes. There is always going to be So Much Stuff going on. But that doesn't make this wee fight less important. Because sometimes it's the small stuff that makes the biggest impact on how people see Others.

This is SO MUCH BIGGER than a character in Star Trek dying. This is how the media treats and continues to treat disabled characters in story narrative. Disabled people and characters should be allowed to have their own stories and tell them with just as much fullness and acceptance as those who are abled.

I see a lot of people saying Wriothesley might be blind and while I think it'd be cool if he was, I'd like to remind you all that the literal first thing we see him do is read

Tbh as a cane user it’s a little funny to me that Harry gets shot in the leg (and potentially the shoulder) and then has to just. Continue w his Jamrock shuffle. Sounds like a wheelchair situation to me, but damn, nobody had even a spare cane for the guy? Crutches, perhaps? Couldn’t even like go out and get a particularly large stick? He reopens his wound just by taking a nap and having a nightmare, and then if u try and let him catch his breath you’ll just trigger the idle animation where Cuno makes Harry give him a piggy back ride 😩 and then you can’t even do drugs about it or Jean will bully you. How about I shoot YOU in the shoulder and the thigh and see how well YOU do even trying to MOVE without fourteen different substances in you, hm?? Anyway I think there should be a cane in the game with +2 Pain Threshold (pain management) +1 Volition (soldiering on) -2 Hand/Eye Coordination (hands full) and +1 Half Light (improvised weapon)

the thing is.. i could honestly spend hours screaming about this show as i try to convince the world to give it a chance, but i do think all of my yelling can be more effectively summed up by what sea and p’aof said here. this is gonna be a story about two characters, one with disability and one with a criminal record, who, albeit in different ways, can’t see a future for themselves because our society tells them that there is no place for them in it, but by meeting each other they’re gonna come together to find a new appreciation for life and build a home in this world. so whatever people may think of the director or the actors involved in this project, i really wish everyone will be able to look past that and appreciate this show for what it is, which is ultimately a story about hope, and i think we all need some of that, especially right now

#obv characters as im aware certain hermits do and do not actually need glasses irl lol #hermitcraft #also the vague 'medical reasons' in the light green row are:#to manage migraines (false & scar) + photosensitivity (tango) + protection from sun/light (hypno)#specifically i hc hypno as visually impaired to the point that corrective lenses in glasses wouldnt help so he wears sunglasses to avoid -#unintentionally exposing his eyes to direct light sources and causing damage #i also hc etho stress and scar as blind in one eye but similar situation where corrective lenses wont help hence why they're in other place #based on the needs of their 'good' (mostly functional) eye lol

I want a werewolf story but the person wears glasses and still needs them when transformed but their face changes shape so drastically there's literally nothing they can do short of buying another pair of glasses, taking the lenses out, and trying to jury-rig a set of goggles that will A)fit them correctly in their transformed state B)not fall off C)actually let them see D)not get destroyed when they transform back

And that's not even getting into the fact that their normal glasses probably wouldn't even work because their eyes have changed structure and would probably need whole new lenses.

if they can't figure out how to do this or just straight up don't have the money to buy an extra pair of glasses they're just. fucking incapable of doing jack shit while transformed because they can't see anything clearly even if it's pressed against the end of their new muzzle.

This would get even worse if being transformed affects what colors they can see in any way, because now not only can't they see things, they can't even rely on memory to recognize things until they get used to the new gradient of grey to yellow to blue.

No magic exists that fixes this. No it does not magically get fixed after they transform enough times or any other magical related stuff.

They either have to get werewolf-accessible glasses or goggles, or not be able to see. Those are the only two options. And no, sense of smell and hearing do not somehow magically compensate for their inability to see. That's not how this works.

Anyways yes I did combine my visually impaired flags and the all-inclusive werewolf flag.

i saw you in the replies of heliokaminoses posts; tbh i don't think de talks about disability at all and i don't understand why he would choose to headcanon kim as blind (it's out of character, he is very independent)

Ohhh boy OK. I mean, I don't really want to get into a long argument about disability bc i am.. very tired, but holy shit independence and blindness are not in any way mutually exclusive! That's why mobility aids and canes and things are important! They give people their independence.

You're welcome to read into the text whatever you want, but Harry is explicitly disabled. He is obviously struggling with chronic pain through the whole game, he's going through withdrawal, he has post-polio syndrome after being ill when he was younger and paralysis that affects his facial expressions, he literally takes drugs to cope with his chronic pain and keep working. None of that is headcanon- it is literally in the text and its all part of the critique that the game offers of the RCMs structure within capitalism. Pretty big part of the game imo

Am I the only one who's concerned by the way the Hazbin Hotel fandom jokes about Valentino's eyesight?

Yes, the thought of a powerful and terrifying Overlord taking thirty minutes to count three dollar bills is amusing. But I've seen a lot of comments along the lines of, "Valentino's like, 'Who is this guy?' Wouldn't you like to know, blind-ass bitch?" and ... eh ... it doesn't sit right with me.

Like, I won't go so far as to call it ableist, but it's veering pretty close. It's almost as if people are saying it's okay to mock someone for being blind or partially sighted.

I get it. It's fun to dunk on a fictional villain. It feels safe. But we have to remember that Valentino's poor eyesight is not the reason why he's a villain.

He's not bad because he squints at a screen sometimes. He's bad because he's an abusive prick.
