god i am So Sorry if youve answered this 80 times but i cant find it- what watercolor lookin brush are you using for the recent pokemon art?
no worries! i do get this question more than any other so i'll share my whole sugimori-style art process in detail below.
first i start with scanned lineart, done with brush pens on paper.
when painting digitally, i use Paint Tool SAI. i start with a simple base color with our good old friend the paint bucket.
next comes shading. here are my watercolor brush settings:
i copy the base colors of a drawing over and turning them completely white, then setting them to Screen mode. then i draw over the silhouette with a black watercolor brush (and sometimes midtones as well.)
after that i add an overlay (watercolor or coffee-stained paper) from a selection i keep on my computer. then i do some final color correction!
that's all! if you have any additional questions let me know!

Finally done with my little big study of Ken Sugimori’s traditional watercolor style from his earliest Pokemon paintings before he transitioned to digital. Real watercolor is hard to emulate and I know it’s not 100% but it’s always room for improvement later on ✨🌷

Pokémon Crystal
My first traditional piece for 2022.
Pokémon Crystal was my favorite of the Pokémon games growing up. I’d watch my nephew play through it, and we’d be lost for hours traveling through the games, fighting Team Rocket, rage quitting because of Whitney’s Miltank, and catching that stupid Red Gyarados in the Lake of Rage. So many childhood memories. I’m happy to have paid homage to it. 💕
I used watercolor paints/ white and black ink/ graphite and charcoal/ and too many coloring pencil brands to name with this.

MONEY TREE
Another post I did for Badtober. The prompt for days 9 and 10 were "MONEY" and "tree, good"
With this one I really wanted to get see if I could replicate the watercolor storybook aesthetic of the old "Generation 1" Pokemon art by Ken Sugimori. I've always looked up to the art he created. As I kid, I would trace his art on wax-paper, along with other art by people I respected (Akira Toriyama, Tetsuya Nomura, etc)
I guess this in a way I'm still doing that with this piece, and with the things I create. I'm a product of the art that has influenced me. If I didn't trace their art when I was a snot nosed brat, I'm not sure I would've taken the initiative to make my own original creations later on in life
I hope with this I was able to capture that serene calm energy found in the old art of Ken Sugimori

Here's that color version. Tried to follow Sugimori-esque coloring style, which doesn't quite work as I have markers, not watercolor.

my mind clicked a switch when @yoku-yukihime told my my artstyle reminded her of gen 2 pokemon because I LOVE old ken sugimori style and i've been probably unconciously drawing and shading like that so here's an attempt at recreating the style with otherworlds me!
i need to gush about how much i love old ken sugimori style omg
it's like the blocky shapes and the circle circles that are somewhat satisfying to pull off and the shading, i dunno if it's watercolor but i love so much how the colors blend into each other so smoothly GHHAAAAGHHH!!!!!!!
