“Here to Stay for a Change”

                 Being a DACA(Deferred action for early Childhood Arrivals) student I’ve been limited of my full potential. I don’t let that get the best of me.There are few things I care deeply about. In my opinion immigration and environmental issues hold a deep place in my heart. I don’t fear about different deportation. What I fear is my voice not being heard. Being suppressed is my greatest fear. In today’s day in age we have freedom of speech and I’ve had people trying to tell me what to do. To not be involved and stay low. Things like that trigger my senses. You may bruise me physically and emotionally but limiting my voice sets us back to segregation. Are we really better than this? As a student at Catawba College getting involved with a DACA protest was an emotional experience. Being involved on trying to speak for a cause is important to me. Speaking my story is rather hard for me. So I only gave a brief, but one day I strive to have my full story told. Even though DACA is a big thing in politics right now, thousands of people still don’t know what it means and they are influenced by the media on what it is. Many people are blind sided by who it helps and what it does. We are DREAMERS and we aren’t here to steal anyone's job. We have worked just as hard as many other people so why do we have to suffer more to just be able to live her? Why do we have to prove our worth to those that just got things handed down to them? I know some people rather not say their status and are afraid to speak out but I’m not. DACA is a part of me and if you want to get to know me you have to get to know all of me. DACA is more than a status, it’s me.

This is my mom, also my sister and I. She was born in Veracruz, Mx. She was brought to the #UnitedStates by her grandmother at 4yrs old. She would have been considered a DREAMER. Growing up I watched my mom bust her ass working 3 different low income jobs to make sure my sister and I would not go without. As an undocumented person, at that time, she took jobs noone else wanted and would always watch her back, afraid of being deported. To be returned to a country she did not know. My mom is not a criminal, she has raised 3, U.S. born children, that are not criminals, she is one of the most proud #Americans I know. She, like me, cries whenever the national anthem is played. People are not illegal, they are undocumented. Humans cannot be illegal, we are not objects, we are not contraband. We are people. The county was built on the backs of immigrants, both documented and undocumented.
