Hey guys is whilst a portmanteau of while and still?

While + still = while'still = while'st'l = while'st = whil'st = whilst?

The combination of words "while still" isn't redundant to me; it means to evince simultaneous handling of two or more active, present issues or concerns.

I wouldn't want to say "I drove whilst he texted." HE's handling the texting. It's not my concern. I'd use "I drove while he texted."

If it's that I am driving and considering adding texting, too, and I want to show acknowledgement of the requirements and implications of each action simultaneously.

"Could I manage to safely text while still driving?" has more weight than "Could I manage to text while driving?" because the latter makes it seem I would divert some or all of my attention from driving to texting. What I want to say is that I'd be attempting to keep sufficient attention on both at the same time: All of what is needed for safe texting AND all of what is needed for safe driving. Driving doesn't become more passive if I add texting at the same time.

So 'while' by itself doesn't cover it. Meanwhile, though, 'whilst' is on its way out in my local vernacular. So I don't think I'd necessarily use it on the fly. But that's beside the point. The point IS, I think 'whilst' has a good purpose. Is 'while still' its purpose? Is it therefore a 'while still' portmanteau?

the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
