Wedding Impossible

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Wedding Impossible (2024, South Korea)
Director: Kwon Young Il
Writers: Oh Hye Won & Park Seul Ki (based on the webtoon by Song Jung Won)
Mini-review:
Well, this drama was entertaining, but nothing more. It was especially funny at the beginning, thanks to that sort of 'rivalry' between the leads. However, once they solved that and started moving into purely romantic territory, the story began to lose steam quickly. Tbh, I kept watching to the very end because of the sizzling chemistry between Jeon Jong Seo and Moon Sang Min. And I guess I wanted to see how in the world they were gonna clear up the mess created by the characters, which was pretty fascinating. I feel like the show would have been better if the director had put more thought into its style, cause the whole thing looked pretty cheap and bland. But still, Wedding Impossible is fun enough, and I can see fans of classic romcoms enjoying it a lot.

Peninsula (2020)
Tumblr media
Peninsula isn’t as fresh, frightening, or memorable as Train to Busan. It also doesn’t quite follow through with its premise but makes up for it with something I bet you’d never see out of a zombie movie set in Korea: Mad Max-style action!
Four years after a zombie outbreak in South Korea, former Marine Corps Captain Jung-Seok (Gang Dong-won) and his widowed brother-in-law Chul-min (Kim Do-yoon) are offered a life-altering job. Inside the undead-riddled Peninsula is an abandoned truck filled with US$20 million. They've been hired to retrieve it as part of a team of four who will enter South Korea at night - when the darkness will hide them from the innumerable ghouls. Once inside, they're shocked to discover survivors in the ruins.
If you’re looking for a heist movie with zombies in it, you want Army of the Dead. Peninsula starts with the team going in to grab the money but within minutes, half of them are dead. Chul-min is taken captive by crazed militants who’ve established a society in the ruins of the city, while Jung-Seok is rescued by Min-Jung (Lee Jung-hyun), her father Kim (Kwon Hae-hyo), and her two daughters, Joon (Lee Re), and Yu-Jin (Lee Ye-won). Now, the ghouls are the least of everyone’s worries. Unit 631 roams the streets, looking for any strays to put in their arena. There, the people have to run away from hungry flesh-eaters while the soldiers bet on who will die. Chul-min needs a way out ASAP. Unfortunately, the satellite phone he would’ve used to call his Chinese mobster bosses has been confiscated. Now Jung-Seok needs to save his brother, get the phone, get the money and leave with the help of the family who rescued him… but things are on the verge of getting dicey. See, Jung-Seok’s met Min-Jung before. She asked him for help four years ago when the zombie plague began. He refused and left her behind. Oops.
As a zombie movie, Peninsula disappoints. They don’t really play a big part in the film except at the beginning and then at the end. Mostly, this is an apocalyptic film. People scrambling for food, cobbling together equipment, setting up dodgy institutions where might makes right, that kind of thing. And of course, there’s the driving. If you’re going to check out Peninsula, it should be for the movie’s best scene, a spectacular race in the city featuring dozens of vehicles with our heroes in the lead and everyone trying to turn them into roadkill. Whereas the rest of the film barely uses zombies, this part of Peninsula brings the two genres together. The dead are obstacles to be dodged, they’re also weapons to use against those pursuing you. It’s fast-paced, expertly coordinated and loads of fun.
Plenty is going on in the film, which makes the nearly two-hour running time go by plenty fast… except at the end. During the conclusion, Peninsula tries to do too much. It pours on the drama as people have to make heroic sacrifices, there are double-crosses that make escape impossible, hope is renewed, then dashed, then renewed again, and so on. Some of this should’ve been cut, not only so we could end on the high we got from the driving scenes but also so the cheese could be kept at a minimum. Still, it works more than it doesn’t.
Peninsula is not a memorable zombie film and when we examine Seoul Station (the prequel to Train to Busan) we see that the terrific 2016 picture that spawned this franchise was more of an anomaly than a revival of the genre. You can still enjoy this follow-up if you love zombies and you want a bit of something new but anything more than the price of a rental is too much. (Original Korean with English Subtitles, May 21, 2021)

Drama Gossip: Parasyte: The Grey
Tumblr media
Source: Google Images
When unidentified parasites violently take over human hosts and gain power, humanity must rise to combat the growing threat.
Source: Netflix (2024)
I Did Not Expect to Enjoy
I really just watched Parasyte: The Grey because I needed something slightly more interesting but still a background sound for me. Little did I know, from episode 2 onwards, this was going to be a tough drama to treat as background noise. I enjoyed it so much, I am even considering the movie (although not the anime, not because I hate anime, I just almost never watch them).
I did not like that first episode. However, looking at it with objective lenses, it was a passable first episode. It introduced the main characters as well as their distinctive characteristics, and it let its viewers know the premise of this drama. Unfortunately, it felt almost like a textbook introduction, not exactly boring but definitely monotonous.
However, things really did pick up from episode 2 onwards. The storyline built in a pace I appreciated. The action was definitely a huge win for me. Even the suspense and lacking comedy played well into Parasyte: The Grey.
I especially liked the arc of Junkyeong's thoughts towards the alien species. It was a good balance between her distrust and subsequent (albeit reluctant) trust. Good thing was, her distrust did not lead into a horrible tragedy like so many same-ish shows like to do. I only wished she wasn't so sarcastic to Heidi right till the end.
The friendship/relationship between Suin and Heidi along with Kangwoo with either of them was part of the reason this drama grew on me so quickly. Lets all be real, if it wasn't for Kangwoo, this drama would have been quite dry. If I thought Suin's life was sad (especially after that scene with Cheolmin), Kangwoo's life is equally as tragic.
I would have liked for more "happy ending" scenes but if there are plans for a second season, then I understand fully why there was a lack of "happy ending" scenes.
All in all, a solid Korean drama without the romance bullshit or a redundantly large amount of slow plot progression scenes.
Rating: ★★★★☆

Best Supporting Actress (Keum Sae-Rok)
Best Youth Actor (Jo Yi-Hyun)
Best Couple Award (Lee Do-Hyun & Go Min-Si)
Kim Myung-Hee (Go Min-Si), Soo-Ryeon’un fakir arkadaşıdır.

Chapter Five- Royal Residences Part One
warnings: mentions of weight, AFAB character, mentions of female body parts, references to the weight of M/C, loosely based on my own research of the ancient Korean royalty system, bullying, loneliness, anxiety, money problems, mentions of how other people view characters body

3.4k words
You made your way to the front, the sound of your name, leaving nearly everyone shocked but your best friend, who had the biggest grin on her beautiful face. No one had expected you to get through, not even yourself. A blush blankets your face as you make your way to the line at the front. A moment passes as everyone waits for the ladies who did not get through to leave the smaller courtyard.
"Congratulations ladies" you hear Hoseok speak, breaking the silence, whilst looking over each and every one of you. You don't know if you were just imagining it, but the tall and handsome man had sent an almost imperceptible smile your way, making your eyes go wide. "Now, myself and Jungkook will tell you your residences, and we will also assign you 2 maids and a manservant for you to use at your convenience"
"Let's start with the furthest away from this little courtyard shall we?" Jungkook questioned, though the question was rhetorical.
"Bae Suzy, You are in the Sapphire Apartment. Along with the manservants, you brought along with you, you are also being assigned Shin Won-ho as your manservant and Kim Tae-Yeon and Chou Tzu-yu as your maids. Please proceed to your apartment"
"Next we have the Chariote Apartment, the person who will be staying there is Han Sun-Hwa. You are being assigned Lee Jong-Hyun, Jeon So-Yeon and Kwon Yu-Ri. Please proceed."
The process carried on.
"Ruby Apartment is for Hwang Yeji, You are assigned Kang Dong-Ho, Ahn Sol-Bin and An Yu-Jin. Please proceed.
"Opal Apartment. Kim Seol-Hyun. Woo Ji-Ho, Son Chae-Young, Cho Seung-Hee"
"Carnelian Apartment. Kwon Eun-Bi. Yoo Ki-Hyun, Lee Hae-in and Lee Young-Yoo"
"Amber Apartment. Choi Mi-Young. Doh Kyung-Soo, Bae Woo-He, Baek A-Yeon"
"Azurite Apartment. Kim Si-Jeong. Lee Byung-Hun, Go Woo-Ri and Park Hye-Won"
At this point, everyone had left apart from you. "Miss Seo, as you were an unexpected candidate, your apartment is still getting ready and the maids needed a few more moments, so we were trying to prolong this for as long as possible. You have been assigned Moon Jong-Up, Ahn Hye-Jin who goes by Maria or Hwa-Sa and Jun Hyo-Seong. I hope that they treat you well. To prolong this even longer as we have not received the signal that they are ready, we are going to give you a tour, are you okay with that?" The pair asked.
"Perfectly." You responded. "It would be my honour" You carried on with a smile. "Please, Lead the way". The two young men smiled at you, before moving down the stairs towards you. Suddenly, you felt incredibly nervous, these incredibly attractive young men were looking directly at you, with no signs of distate anywhere on their faces or bodies. The men took a space on either side on your, Hoseok moving his arms to point the way out of the courtyard. "Do you have a flower that you appreciate the most?" Jungkook asked "Good question Kookie" Hoseok said, the nickname making your eyes widen again, almost not expecting the men to be so close that they were using nicknames. "We might have your favourite here in one of the gardens"
"Cherry blossoms, Chief State Councillor and High Councillor. My most appreciated flower of all is Cherry Blossom." The two men share a look between each other. "That is our Gracious King's favourite, so much that he has a garden dedicated to it, coincidentally, the garden is right next to your apartment" A small gasp left your lips, the excitement evident not just on your face but on your whole body as you turned to both of them, your hands clasping together joyfully. "Really!?! Can we go there?" You asked hopefully. Both men smiled at your excited state before telling you that you could, and led the way, right to the entrance of the garden. There was a small bridge to cross before you would actually be in the park, and you ran quickly across it, accidentally forgetting about the two men behind you. You span round quickly, a giant smile on your face, trying to look everywhere at everything.
"I take it that you like the garden," a voice behind you, which you quickly identified as Hoseok, spoke. "Almost more than anything in the world," You said without thinking. Both men let out a laugh, which made you look at them with a questioning gaze. "You have almost the same reaction as the Good King". This very sentence made you stop in your spot, your face dropping, looking almost horrified to be compared to the King. "Omo, I am not worthy of being compared to our gracious King" You spoke, anxiously wringing your hands together. "My apologies Lady Seo, we didn't mean to make you anxious," Jungkook said. You noticed a young woman run up to the two men and yourself. She spoke quietly to the men, before bowing and turning away. The two men turned to you, smiling slightly "Your apartment is ready Lady Seo, let us lead you there" Hoseok said. Nodding, you spoke gently "Please do lead the way". You bow gently, allowing the men to turn around and lead the way out of the garden that you had fallen in love with, and almost didn't want to leave.
It took barely two minutes before you arrived in front of the apartment. "This is the Emerald apartment. Next to you, there is the Queen Dowager's Garden, you are not allowed to enter that space without her explicit permission" Jungkook stated sternly. "And on your other side is Lady Hwang" Hoseok finished. This made you smile, your apartments here, being closer to each other than the houses in your town were. "Lady Hwang Yeji is my best friend," You spoke gently, a small but warm smile on your face at the mention of your best friend. "We have known each other since we were born, my eomma likes to say that I have two sets of parents, both our parents raised both of us..." you paused, your smile turning into a frown "well my eomma and Yeji's parents, my appa..." you spoke again, your frown becoming bigger. "You don't need to tell us, Lady Seo" Hoseok said calmly, laying a gentle hand on your shoulder. You look up, and into the handsome man's eyes, your eyes slightly blurry with tears, making something flash in Hoseok's eyes. "I feel like I almost need to" you spoke "My appa, he used to be a good man, until he fell from grace, he lost a lot of his respect, and therefore money, and the money he did keep, he used to drink. He would blame me for his drinking, he would tell me it was my fault, that he wished it was I who died and not my sister. Before I left, he attacked me for the first time, he dragged me by my hair to the floor and yelled at me. My eomma, she's a wonderful woman, she grabbed him by the ear and dragged him out of the house once she realised he was in my room and harming me. Appa had a bruise on his ear still, when I left for the procession. My bruises still remain intact too, but when I remember what my eomma did, the fire in her eyes, I feel proud to be her descendant" You finally finished your story.
You could see anger clearly on both men's faces. "I know I need not worry about my eomma whilst I'm here, she is as fierce as the summer in the sky in the summer sky." The warm smile lay on your lips, remembering your eomma. "She sounds like a wonderful woman" Jungkook spoke, a smile that could be perceived as genuine if there were someone looking on from the outside in.
"Anyway's my Chief Councillor and High Councillor, I must leave your warm presence and settle myself into my apartments. I hope to see you soon Your Honours. May the sun warm your cheeks, and the food fills your bellies" You speak eloquently, bowing low before the two handsome men, before turning and leaving their presence to enter your apartments.
The apartment that you entered was spacious and homely. In the room stood your friends Chan and Changbin with large grins on their faces, along with your assigned manservant and maids.
"My Lady, Your room is this way, would you like me to help you redress" Hyo-Seong spoke, her hand pointing to an area separate from the room you all stood in. The room was separated from the room you were in by a wall of sliding doors. The entire apartment was decorated in green and brown, the sliding doors were made of oak, and the cloth was painted with the seal of the kingdom in the colours your apartment was named after. It was a beautiful sight to behold, and you knew that if you had any spare time, you would ask your maids to retrieve any painting items they could get a hold of so that you could show this image to your eomma when you got home again. You knew that she would take great delight in your painting, and knowing how an apartment within the royal castle looked and would love the painting even more so, knowing it came from her daughter.
"That would be lovely Miss Jun" you spoke to the woman. She nodded her head as a slight bow, walking to the room you now identified as your bedroom. In the room, there was a large box placed near the window, on top of it was a new hanbok ready for you to wear. "Would you like a bath Lady Seo?" Hyo-Seong asked. You shook your head, a feeling of exhaustion coming over you in a quick wave. "Do you think it would be possible to sleep for a short period Miss Jun?" You asked hopefully. "Unfortunately not, My Lady, there is much to do. As you have reached the second stage, you must prepare for a meeting with Queen Dowager. You will soon also be accepting gifts from the royal family, of which I am unsure, but you must prepare to receive them. We must also start preparing you for your interview, and the luncheon that is happening tomorrow. There is also a Royal Banquet that we must prepare you for. I assume you have attended a banquet before, but a royal banquet is much more different to the ones of the high class" The maid in front of you explained your schedule for the coming potential one to two weeks that you would be residing in a royal apartment.
"Very well, then we must begin," You say a small polite smile on your face. "What's first?" you ask. "First My Lady, we must dress you," she says, returning your attention back to the box that had caught your attention when you first walked into the room. You didn't recognise the hanbok, remembering all the ones that you owned. "I apologise, but this is not my hanbok," you tell your maid "No My Lady, the Queen Dowager sent this. It's the first gift from the royal family." Excitement fills your body, knowing that this was something that the Queen Dowager herself had someone make and be sent. "But only 6-7 were predicted, and I'm not the average size", you questioned slightly, the anxiety that you had felt earlier in the day returning in full force. "The Queen Dowager had this one sent specifically, it was a hanbok she had in her storage, she wore it when she was pregnant with the King. She sent a letter along with it" you were told before being handed the letter
Dear Lady Seo,
The Royal Family apologises for not having anything prepared for you. I did not have a gift prepared for you, however, your crest is a crest that has a long line, and the crest on your hanbok is a phoenix. This was my family crest before I married King Sejong, the King's late father. It was a hanbok I wore when I was pregnant with the King. I hope that it does you well, as it is now yours. Please meet me in my gardens at 3.
Sincerely,
Her Royal Highness, The Queen Dowager Kim Eun-Ji
"What time is it?" You ask loudly, waiting for anyone in the household to respond. "2:30" you hear someone yell, unsure of who it was due to the closed doors between you. You feel your face pale. Turning to your maid you speak again "We must hurry, please call Miss Ahn in, time is not on our side". The maid nods, before running the door and calling in the other woman.
Within 20 minutes, your hair had been brushed and moved into a restyled updo, behind held back with a purple dwikkoji, your under clothes being changed for cleaner ones, and then the gifted hanbok was placed onto your body. It fit almost like a glove like it was made for you. The jeogori was a gorgeous dark purple colour, decorated with golden detailing featuring a phoenix, the goreum was also in an off-gold colour. The chima was a black colour with the same golden detail. Your beoseons were black as well as your shoes which were decorated in the same gold detailing. With a few minutes to spare, your maids applied some basic makeup consisting of plant ash to apply a dark brown colour to your eyebrows, safflower was used to apply a light rouge to your lips and cheeks and cherry blossom petals took right from the very cherry blossom garden you had just been in (it was a perfume that was on the dressing table when you got here, you had just assumed it was a gift everyone received) mixed with water was used to make a delicious spelling perfume.
With exactly 10 minutes left before the Queen Dowager wanted to see you, you left your apartment, your manservant Moon Jong-Up directing you, almost acting as your guard as well as your guide. When you arrived outside the Queen Dowagers garden, which only took moments as you quickly found out was right next to your apartment, Mr Moon stepped aside to let you enter first, before following you slightly behind, allowing you to look like you had found the garden yourself.
It doesn't take long to notice the Queen Dowager, it shocked you slightly when you saw that she was wearing the same colours just the other way around. The lady in front of you turns towards you, hearing your footsteps. She waits at the top of the stairs of the Pavilion she was standing in. Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you bow as low as possible to the elegant woman before you. "You're early Lady Seo" the woman speaks. "My apologies Your Majesty, I was excited to meet you once again." You speak, not allowing your nerves to take over your anxiety.
“Don’t be, it is a good thing for a woman to have, to have time management perfected, especially for a woman. Especially for a woman who may be the future mother of the kingdom, the future queen.” She says, her very words making you blush.
“You speak of me too highly My Queen,” you say. “I am eternally grateful for your gracious gift. The fabric is the softest thing I have ever had touch my skin. If there is anything I can do to show my thankfulness, please allow me to do it. Would you like some tea, Your Royal Highness?” you ask, noticing the teapot and teacups whilst you were looking around in nervousness.
“You need not worry Lady Seo, this is no longer a test, you do not need to pour my tea for me,” she says, her voice full of authority, before nodding slightly to a man that you almost hadn’t seen when you entered the pavilion. “You intrigue me, Lady Seo, you are so unlike the other candidates, both in looks and mentality. Most of your candidates, when I had asked them why they were doing this, responded with generic answers” she speaks “For his Royal Highness the King’s happiness, to get to know you Your Highness” she carries on, her voice changing to mimic the people she was speaking about, at the sound of her change in voice you let out a giggle, covering your mouth. “But your answer, it was different, you wanted to make your family proud. This was something I wanted when I was a candidate to marry the King's late father” she finishes, the words turning the mood serious once more. A lady, small and almost meek approached the table, taking the teapot and pouring tea into both the cups on the table, before retreating to her spot against the wall of the garden. “You have a beautiful garden My Queen,” you tell her trying to achieve the once jovial mood the pavilion had a matter of minutes ago. “I spent a few brief minutes in the cherry blossom garden, and I truly believe that it was the happiest moment of my life,” you tell her, allowing the smile to fill your face as your mind retrieves the memory you were talking of.
“The King’s favourite spot is also in the cherry blossom garden, he begged his father to plant the trees when he was still King, persuading him by telling him that he would propose to his future queen in that very garden,” the Queen Dowager tells you, allowing you a little into the past of the King, who you were yet to set eyes upon.
Before thinking, you blurt out “Were you scared when you made the application to become the late King Se-Jeong’s wife?” A few moments pass, and just as you go to open your mouth to apologise, the dowager stops you. “I was, in fact, I was terrified, to tell you the truth, I never wanted it, but I needed to do it for the pride of my family. I was lucky that I fell in love with the King eventually, and we had a good, long and happy life,” she answers with a small smile on her face, reminiscing on the memories of her past. “I actually have a few questions for you myself if you don't mind”
“It would be my honour to answer your questions My Queen” you respond, nervousness filling your body even more.
“The king is very… uh… close with his closest men. Would that be a problem with you?” she starts. “Of course not, if our Great King is happy, then I myself shall be happy,” you respond, hoping your answer satisfies her. She nods, with a small hum of approval.
“And concubines? What are your opinions on the concubines?” she continues her questioning.
You pause, this was something you had thought about. “Well My Queen, I have a feeling that if I was ever to become Queen, the other two candidates that would have gotten through, would be my school bullies-” the queen cuts you off after hearing of your bullies “Your bullies are in the palace?” She questions with an eyebrow raised.
“Yes Your Highness, Kim Seol-Hyun and Kwon Eun-Bi, their apartments are Carnelian and Opal if I remember correctly”, the Queen Dowager nods again. “So what would you do if you became Queen and them the concubines?” She asks, her interest even more peaked.
“Part of me would want to through them into the dungeons like they had threatened they would do with me earlier today. Another part of me would want all of the king's concubines gone but the biggest part of me wants the King to be happy, and if the concubines make My Great King happy, then I shall live with the concubines.” The Queen Dowager looks almost shocked. “The Kings happiness, at the end of the day, will always be my source of happiness, whether I get through to the final round, or I don’t. The King, from what I have heard in rumours spread across cities and towns, near and far, is that when the King is happy, the land thrives, and the people are well. My family are part of his people, and as well as making them proud, I desperately want them to be happy… even my father.” you tell her.
“Your father?"

Disclaimer
I strongly urge you to take all the tarot readings on this account lightly. All the posts are intended to have an entertaining nature, they are pure speculations and completely made up by me. I can never ever guarantee any of it and you should never take any of the tarot readings for granted. I would like to stress that I know no idol nor actor personally, I never met any of them and all those readings are fictional, imagins, make believe and hypothetical scenarios. Do not base any of your life decisions on a tarot reading only, always use your common sense. If you have issues with tarot cards for religious or other reasons, do not engage in reading my posts.
When you make a request take my life into consideration and be patient. I’m a responsible adult with a full time job, dog, family, friends, duties, house chores and requests from other sources. All these take my time. Also reading tarot cards requires a certain mood, vibe and concentration, it can’t be done just anytime. Count on the time delays, please. I will do my best to complete your requests.
I’m always willing to help out if you yourself consider taking on tarot cards as a hobby. Feel free to ask if you have any inquiries about it, no question is dumb. I don’t know everything but will try to help the best I can.

Record of Youth- What Price Fame?
I've been watching a Korean show on Netflix called Record of Youth.
The story centers around 3 characters: Sa Hye Jun, a male model and actor; An Jeong Ha, a makeup artist who becomes Hye Jun's girlfriend; and Won Hae Hyo, Hye Jun's best friend and a fellow model and actor.
Hae-Hyo comes from a wealthy family and his mother is particularly pushy trying to further his career. But he is finding some success as a commercial model and actor.
Meanwhile, Hye-Jun is struggling and perpetually missing opportunities. His family is poor and his mother works as a maid to Hae-Hyo's family, where Hae-Hyo's mother rarely misses an opportunity to rub her own son's success in the face of Hye-Jun's mother, who is aware that her own son is not doing as well.
Hye-Jun's father and brother are against him and continually remind him he is failing and needs to give up this dream of becoming an actor. He also has his military service looming, so he is constantly balancing whether he should give up on acting and enlist, or put off enlisting for one more chance.
I've read a few reviews of this show and they concentrate on the love interests. But I feel like the show is a commentary on celebrity and the surrounding culture- in this instance, Korean celebrity culture. So that's what I'm going to focus my commentary on.
Early on, Hye-Jun's weasel manager stiffs him for a modeling gig, apparently not the first time, and Hye-Jun quits. The manager does his best to undermine Hye-Jun's career by casting doubt on him to the various directors that have considered hiring him. This causes Hye-Jun to lose a few gigs. The weasel manager's response to this is: hey, I'm teaching you how not to trust people in this business, which is good for you, so you ought to thank me. The weasel manager is going to repeatedly figure in this show as a model of self-interest who will try and use other's fame, or try to knock down other's fame for his own ends and profit.
Hye-Jun meets Jeong-Ha, a makeup artist hired to do his makeup for a modeling gig and they quickly connect as a couple.
But eventually, Hye-Jun's personality, ability, and dedication gets him noticed and his career begins to take off. This is where I believe the show's message lies.
Hye-Jun's family is slow to react to the change. His mother and grandfather, who had supported him before, are happy for him. His father and brother continue to doubt his success, but the increasing amount of publicity make it hard to deny. His father, a partner in a small construction company, begins to be sidelined because the others around him think he is now wealthy, supported by his son. Having never supported his son's career, he expects nothing from it, and at first, receives nothing from his son. Nonetheless, people's attitudes about the father have changed because of their perceived ideas about the father's position. This bothers the father a lot, but he is forced to deal with the change too: he was once the provider in the family, and now his son, who he denigrated, is seen as the top-dog in the family.
The brother also begins to receive some preferential treatment at his job in a bank, when his manager finds out he is Hye-Jun's brother. But the brother, always considered the "good" brother before, now finds himself as the second.
As quickly as Hye-Jun's career takes off, and he finds himself very successful, there are a lot of people who seem to want to take him down for no other reason that he is successful.
Hateful online comments appear about him. Scandal articles made up by a busybody reporter looking to make a name for herself cause him undue trouble. His old agent tries to undermine him, and at the same time take over as his agent- which means he goes into overdrive trying to represent himself as Hye-Jun's old friend, while simultaneously undercutting the current manager.
And Hye-Jun's best friend's (Hae-Hyo) mother (the pushy stage-mom) sees her maid's son's success as a poke in the eye- as if to think- how dare this poor family's son do so well when my son is not having the same success.
She berates her own son as a failure for not doing better than his friend. She tries to manipulate the pieces to her son's advantage, but has no luck. This causes friction in her family with her husband, who she inexplicably blames, and with her son, who resents her interference and berating.
While Hae-Hyo, the best friend, knows it's wrong to hold his friend's success against him, he can't help it given his mother's attitude about the whole thing. It doesn't help that he is also falling for the makeup artist, his best friend's girlfriend.
The girlfriend, who has remained faithful throughout Hye-Jun's meteoric rise to fame, finds herself more frequently sidelined due to her boyfriend's work commitments. The never-ending scandal articles- alleging romantic involvements with other actresses, a homosexual romantic involvement with a former employer when Hye-Jun was still a model, and impropriety allegations with his old manager, continually stress the couple's relationship.
At one point, Jeong-Ha's mother, who is poor, reappears wanting money too. She finds out her daughter is dating this popular actor and wants to cash in with some parental guilt laid on her daughter.
For reasons that I can't understand, I guess it would be really bad in Korean culture for Hye-Jun to come out and say he is in a relationship with his makeup artist girlfriend, because that, in itself, would be some sort of scandal. This is apparently so, because the busybody reporter threatens to release a story exposing the relationship. I don't know why this would be an 'exposé'… but apparently, it is. So they do their best to keep it under wraps. At one point though, she decides it would be better to simply break things off, since the relationship seems to be causing such problems, even though she loves Hye-Jun.
Hye-Jun goes home at night and sometimes just cries himself to sleep over everything that is happening.
The catalog of negative consequences that follows on the heels of Hye-Jun's success is extensive, both to him, and those surrounding him. This is where the show seems to me to be a commentary on the effects of celebrity. I know Korean culture places a lot of value on celebrity, and perhaps this show is meant to serve as a warning to those that want to achieve fame for fame's sake- be careful what you wish for because fame is not all it's cracked up to be.
I myself have heard people long for fame, for nothing more than being famous. They just want to be known and adored. But one of the things this drama brings out is that the pure fact of someone being successful seems to trigger a need in others to bring them down. Hye-Jun is an all-around decent guy. But his success causes people online, who nothing about him or his situation, to speculate all kinds of evil. A youtuber in the show dedicates himself to trashing Hye-Jun's reputation, all so he can get views. The reporter takes any salacious report, finds the worst interpretation, and magnifies that in order to make her own reputation.
Why would these people delight in taking down someone else's success for their own? It says something about human nature- our belief that someone who is successful must be so through underhanded means. It's a basic human jealousy that sees someone else's success as somehow detracting from our own... making us look bad in comparison maybe.
We see this in the mother of the best friend too. Her focus is on trying to make her own son look good, but she sees her son's success only in comparison with his best friend. As long as the best friend is doing better, he is seen as 'less', so she pushes to a degree that ends up making everyone miserable. The fact that her son is making a living as an actor, when probably hundreds, if not thousands, never get THAT far, is not good enough for her. Jealousy has made her depreciate her son's achievements, rather than appreciate them.
There is actually a lot more to this show than I'm telling right now. If I were to catalog the plot better, and spend a lot more time, I would give a lot more detail into the consequences of fame that are explored. But I'll leave off for now.
It's a good show, and I still have one more episode to go, but I've found it to be a more thoughtful show than some of the reviews I've read make it out to be. I think it's a great exploration of human nature and the consequences of fame.

Opinion
This is a very good series, I binge watched it in a few days. I loved the queen! How strong, resourceful, and independent she was. I loved all the characters, especially the queen and prince Seongnam. I also loved how the king was very supportive of her. The series had a lot of different topics, from motherhood to sexuality. It's a drama series. There are no gore or sex scenes. I recommend this series to anyone who likes history dramas.

On the Beach at Night Alone (Hong Sang-soo, 2017) Cast: Kim Min-hee, Seo Young-hwa, Jeong Jae-yeong, Mun Seong-kun, Kwon Hae-hyo, Song Seon-mi, Ahn Jae-hong. Screenplay: Hong Sang-soo. Cinematography: Kim Hyung-ku, Park Hong-yeol. Film editing: Hahm Sung-won. On the Beach at Night Alone is narratively simple: An actress recovering from an affair with her married director that caused a scandal goes to visit a friend in Hamburg, Germany, and then returns to the city of Gangneung in Korea, where she visits more friends and, over many cups of soju, reflects on her life and affairs. But though the film is mostly talk about love and sex and other matters of relationship, it's larded with puzzles and arresting details, including two (or possibly three) endings. The first section of the film concludes on a beach in Hamburg, where the camera pans away from the actress, Young-hee (played by Kim Min-hee), standing alone, and looks at her friends walking away. Then the camera pans back but Young-hee is gone, and when the camera pans farther, we see Young-hee being carried off, slung over the shoulder of a man. We don't know who the man is, but she and her friend had earlier been accosted by a man wanting to know the time of day; when they don't reply, he walks off in disgust. And later, walking through the park, they spot the man again and run away. Is Young-hee's apparent abductor the same man? We get no answer, and the screen turns black before the second part, in Korea, begins with Young-hee sitting in a movie theater, lingering for a while after the lights come up and the theater empties. After meeting with some friends, she moves into a hotel that overlooks the sea. On the balcony outside, a man seems to be washing the windows of her room, but he has no soap or water or sponge or squeegee, and keeps "washing" the same spots over and over. Neither she nor her friends seem to notice this man, who also appears later, again simply standing unnoticed on the balcony. Later, when her friends leave, she goes out to the beach where she lies down and falls asleep. She is wakened by a man who turns out to be a member of a film crew working with the director with whom she had the affair. Eventually, she meets the director again and they have a conversation at the dinner table, where he gives her a book that seems to have a special significance for them. But there's a cut and we see Young-hee again lying on the beach, where she is again awakened by a man who, as in the previous awakening scene, tells her it's dangerous. This time, she tells the man that she was just dreaming, walks off alone, and the film ends. How to assimilate these eccentric, enigmatic moments into the film as a whole, with its extended dialogues about relationships? Because of its talk about sex and love, On the Beach at Night Alone has been likened to Éric Rohmer's "Six Moral Tales" films and to Richard Linklater's Jesse and Céline trilogy. But it reminds me more of the skewed reality of Michelangelo Antonioni's films, such as L'Avventura (1960), which never answers the questions about Anna's disappearance, or Blow-Up (1966), which never solves the central murder, if there was indeed one. Is the mysterious man who carries off Young-hee or the one who lingers on her balcony just a projection of her frustrations? Or are we misguided in even asking such questions?

In Depth Kdrama Review and Recap: While You Were Sleeping (Spoilers)
Rating: 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Genre: Romantic Comedy, Thriller, Fantasy, Legal
Starring: Bae Suzy (Nam Hong Joo), Lee Jong-Suk (Jeong Jae Chan), Jung Hae-In (Han Woo Tak), Lee Sang-Yeob (Lee Yoo-Beom)
Tumblr media
This is a masterpiece in my eyes. I love the plot, all of it. I think all of the events fit together perfectly, and there’s not one point that doesn’t make sense in the whole drama. Its hilarious seeing Hong Joo and Jae Chan’s relationship initially, with Hong Joo absolutely convinced that Jae Chan is in love with her from the beginning, which confuses and frustrates him a lot when she talks to him about it initially. It is one of few romantic comedies that are truly comedic, and its one of those dramas that you can have a good laugh watching.
Bae Suzy As Nam Hong Joo
Tumblr media
Suzy did such an amazing job as Hong Joo. She really does represent Suzy as a very intelligent character that has her weird side (especially at the beginning) but at the same time has many charms about her. It’s great to see the progression of her character, from a very strange individual who everyone sees as crazy, to a slightly less crazy and a lot more normal. After the initial craziness with Jae Chan, she definitely started acting more human, which could partially be because she finally has someone that understands her, so feels less of an outcast. Again, Suzy does such a great job in displaying how Hong Joo develops into the confident, content woman she finishes as, who never loses her charm. She shows all of her human side, especially in difficult times, like when Jae Chan gets injured and when her testimony in the court case is completely discounted. I think this is a great thing because there are certain dramas that do this poorly, but Suzy does it perfectly, all actors do in fact.
Lee Jong- Suk As Jeong Jae Chan
Tumblr media
Lee Jong-Suk also did an excellent job. His acting in general is incredible! I’ve seen him in quite a few dramas now he really pulls off a great performance each time. Jae Chan is such an interesting character. He is very serious about the stuff that he does, but still has a heart, though he seems to hide it a lot. When his heart does come out (to Hong Joo) its incredibly sweet, and shows his personal development. He is really shown to be a strong and collected individual, which is only changed when he’s in the most dire of situations, like when Hong Joo was seriously ill from the poison and also the incident with investigator Choi (Kim Won-Hae). Jong-Suk shows off Jae Chan’s human side very well, which I love. The acting is just impeccable around the board.
Cases Dealt With By Jae Chan
Tumblr media
Jae Chan deals with a number of very interesting cases. I think they are all well planned out, have a great amount of detail within them, and also love how they show the true fight to get the true verdict heard. The first case was one about a domestic abuse case of defendant Park Joon Mo (Um Hyo-Soop). I think this was a great starting case, as it opened up many places for relationships to open up between different characters. For example, having So Hoon being good friends with Seung Won (and therefore getting Jae Chan involved in more ways than one) was a great way to add twists to the storyline. His second case was the case of the cat serial killer who killed his brother and tried to disguise it as a car accident for insurance money. The third case was the case of the ex-Olympian who mysteriously died. I like this case for a few reasons. When they got to the ending point of the case, they started getting suspicious about Yoo Beom (always a positive). It also led to some great character development, a lot for both male leads. The fourth case he had to deal with was that of a teacher and author who killed one of his students who tried to expose him for using them as near slaves. That was also a very interesting case, as it really showed the shear lengths that Yoo Beom is prepared to go to, but also the determination Jae Chan has for getting the job done right and the true culprit caught, even to the point of putting on a baby voice to make a kid feel comfortable and confess
Tumblr media
The last case is by far the most complex. Initially there were investigations over someone who stole phones to make a living. They caught the guy selling one of the phones back for 10 million and caught both him and the guy buying the phone, knowing there could be suspicious stuff on it to need to pay so much to get it back. On the memory card of the phone retrieved by the guy that stole them were the pictures of the victims of the IV serial killer and more victims that died after the falsely accused killer got sent to jail. Hong Joo and Jae Chan then got caught up in an arson attack in the bunker house of the guy buying the phone back and were then trying to find the true IV serial killer. Most of their questions were answered when she very nearly killed Hong Joo, and then was pushed to her death by Yoo Beom but Jae Chan had to fight to get him indicted of his crimes
Love Triangle
There is a definite love triangle in this drama, though it does seem to be pretty subtle most of the time. Nonetheless a triangle does exist between Hong Joo, Jae Chan and Woo Tak. It’s definitely more subtle though, as Woo Tak hides his feelings for Hong Joo, knowing that she’s already very happy with Jae Chan and as they’re all good friends, wouldn’t want to get in the way. He never outwardly says this, only that Hong Joo is the person he likes in the ending scene of episode 15
Tumblr media
Injuries and different outcomes
I actually think they did something really clever with these different injuries, whether that was intentional or not In the show a number of people get hurt for different reasons but the main ones I’m referencing is the chopstick incident with Hong Joo and So Hoon (Kim So-Hyeon), Woo Tak getting stabbed by Kang Dae Hee (Kang Ki-Young), Jae Chan getting shot by Yoo Man Ho (Jeon Gook-Hwan) and Hong Joo being poisoned by Ha Joo An (Lee Eun-Woo).
Tumblr media
The reason I think they’ve done something clever here, is that they’ve almost portrayed the different kind of future changes that can occur. In the chopstick incident, Woo Tak dreams that after her mum got essentially threatened by Yoo Beom, So Hoon attempted to stab herself in the hand with a chopstick (in the restaurant) so she wouldn’t be able to continue piano and her mum wouldn’t have to worry about money. In that dream, Hong Joo saw what So Hoon was up to and put her hand in the way, getting stabbed herself and ending up in a bloody mess on the floor. By bringing Jae Chan to the restaurant instead of his colleague, Woo Tak managed to completely change what happened within his dream, so instead the situation ran smoothly and nobody was hurt. In this situation, the scenario of the dream completely changed for the better, as instead of a scenario where Hong Joo got badly hurt, the situation was resolved
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the incident with Woo Tak, Jae Chan had a dream about Hong Joo and Kang Cho Hee (Kim Da-Ye) being in danger from Kang Dae Hee on the roof of a water tower building, about to be attacked for what they know about him murdering his younger brother. Knowing this, when Jae Chan bumps into Woo Tak in the morning, he asks him to make sure that at the time Hong Joo had said in the dream that she wasn’t alone, thinking that if Woo Tak was with her, the whole thing could be prevented. Instead, it led to Woo Tak getting stabbed, allowing Cho Hee to escape with Hong Joo. They were hiding but found by Dae Hee, who swung to hit them before being startled by Jae Chan. In this case, the dream itself didn’t change (as the blood dreamt on Dae Hee’s hands makes sense to be Woo Tak’s, but he may not have known that before) but he managed to affect the outcome, so the girls didn’t get hurt. So in this case, the dream didn’t change, but the outcome got better, as Cho Hee and Hong Joo weren’t attacked as he got there just in time.
Tumblr media
In the incident with Jae Chan, Yoo Man Ho was feeling angry at the prosecuting team (specifically Jae Chan) for releasing Do Hak Young (Baek Seong-Hyeon) of the crime of killing his daughter, though he was already proven innocent of that crime. Man Ho then proceeded to shoot Jae Chan as he waited to cross the road to meet Hong Joo in a revenge filled fury (after Yoo Beom had given him pictures of Hak Young with Woo Tak and Woo Tak with Jae Chan to make him suspicious that there was an agenda behind releasing him). In this situation, Jae Chan came moments away from death before reviving, which completely devastated Hong Joo. In a previous dream she saw him crossing to her completely safely without any incidents. In this case, it shows a dream changing completely, but ending up with a worse outcome, as it changed from Jae Chan being perfectly fine and healthy to him almost losing his life after being shot.
Tumblr media
In the incident with Hong Joo, a long time dream of Hong Joo’s nearly came true. This was a dream that she’d dreaded for over a year and even disappeared from her job to prevent that dream evening before coming back with the hope that if it were to happen, Jae Chan and Woo Tak would be able to save her. She had originally dreamt that on the day, she would be lying in a grassy area surrounded by trees dying quietly in the pouring rain. 15 minutes before it happens, Jae Chan wakes from dreaming about it and calls Woo Tak, so they can all make their way there to save her. Yoo Beom proceeded to add a tablet to Hong Joo’s coffee and once she was knocked out, he proceeded to take her up to the roof of the law building he worked at and left her in a wooded area, on the grass. Ha Joo An then proceeded to inject her with a paralysing poison before leaving her to die. She then got rescued by Woo Tak and Jae Chan took over once she’d got to the hospital, giving her rescue breaths to help her paralysed lungs. In this case, it shows a dream that didn’t really change but the outcome was a lot better than it would have been. Before, Hong Joo would have definitely died on the roof of the law firm but since the change this time, although the dream itself didn’t change, Hong Joo’s life was saved and although there was no change from the dream to really, the outcome was significantly better.
Tumblr media
The reason I think that these have been done in a clever way is the fact that all of the cases are different, whether the dream or the outcome has changed is unique in each case. It definitely reminds me of the conversation Jae Chan and Hong Joo had in the very first episode after the car accident while they were in the hospital. In that episode they were discussing what direction the dreams that they have could go if they try and change them. The way that these incidents have occurred (and how they’re all different in their ways) to me are like representations of each of the directions that the path has steered off to. They originally described it as water flowing in other directions and I see it as they’re representing all the different directions it can flow in.
Tumblr media
Hatred for Lee Yoo Beom
I don’t think I will ever be able to describe my true feelings in this case. At the very start, it just seems like he is a kind individual, who was dating Hong Joo and wanted to take her on a nice Valentines date and protect her if anything was to happen. That very quickly turns around. That was something I definitely did not see coming but as soon as it happened, his true character really came out.
Tumblr media
You can see, firstly from the first episode and the pain he would have caused if the car accident had occurred, and from then on it only gets worse. The fact that he’s more than happy to throw people under the bus for himself is just tragic and shows what a sly snake he really is. I didn’t think that Yoo Beom hated Hong Joo enough to tell Ha Joo An (a freaking serial killer!!) that she was suspicious of him sending her fabricated evidence (as she is a reporter for the press). To then aid in what could have been the death of Hong Joo. It’s hard to think that these two individuals were DATING at one point!! I think regardless of whether the accident would have happened or not, Jae Chan really saved Hong Joo from misery if she had stayed with Yoo Beom.
Tumblr media
I don’t think there is enough space to list all of the things he’s done for me to see him as a trash person. I think what he did on the final  episode was really cruel. He already knew he was in the wrong, knew that he probably wouldn’t get the non-guilty verdict he was hoping for, as there was too much evidence against him but in rage decides to run over and kill his ex-employee and good friend. Forgiveness isn’t something he will ever deserve after that, and he’s once again left us broken and swimming in tears
Tumblr media
I’ll try and list some of the trashiest stuff he’s done.
-> although it didn’t really occur, framing Hong Joo for crashing and killing Woo Tak
-> making excuse after excuse to make others think that Jae Chan is discriminative again him because of their history
-> giving Man Ho the photos of  both Hak Young with Woo Tak and Woo Tak with Jae Chan
-> aided a serial killer
-> tried to kill Hong Joo
-> killed his ex-employee and old time friend
-> literally everything he has ever done
Tumblr media
There’s a couple of things that made me very happy: when the female judge slated him for considering that a female judging panel may mean that the ruling could be unfair, his reaction when he found out that Hong Joo had survived, but also also when he found out that she’d woken up
Tumblr media
Tragic backstory
The backstory for this show is truly tragic. A rogue soldier escaped with a rifle and grenades because he was struggling. He went to find his brother Choi Dam Dong, but before his brother could get back to him, he went rogue. The police chief saw him as he was in the shop with his son (Jae Chan). He sent his son away to safety before confronting the soldier and getting shot to death. The soldier then ran away and boarded the bus that Hong Joo was riding (with her father driving). Hong Joo had seen this soldier in her dream previously and warned her father that if they don’t do something, they’ll all die. He tells everyone the bus has broken down and puts Hong Joo in charge of getting everyone away. He eventually tackles the soldier before both of them blow up with the bus. Later, they save Dam Dong from trying to drown in a lake because he felt so guilty about the results of his brothers actions.
Tumblr media
The backstory is truly tragic, as a lot of the stories in kdramas are these days. I love how the backstory really plays such a big part in the dynamic of how they do things in the present.
Slight Disappointments
-> I still feel robbed of that original kiss scene, it would have been so cute if it had actually happened like that for their first kiss. Their first kiss was very cute regardless but we were still robbed of the dream version. Their kiss was very awkward, very funny but awkward
Tumblr media
-> They were very quiet about the rest of Jae Chan’s backstory. For example, we are introduced to Jae Chan’s mum but other than the memory of him being told off by her after the motorcycle accident and them all mourning at their father’s funeral, we have no idea what the dynamic was around them. We also have no idea what happened to her after the period around the funeral, because all we know is that he has passed away (as Seung Won told his friend), so Jae Chan and Seung Won moved together by themselves. Obviously this is just a guess as we are not given any solid answers.
Tumblr media
-> I think it would also be good to know how Hong Joo got her dreams in the first place. They figured out why Jae Chan, Woo Tak, and then Inspector Choi have their visions but no insight in to why Hong Joo was the first
Favourite Scenes
-> church choir scene. The fact that they actually filmed a scene like that. Such a great laugh
Tumblr media
-> every time they refer to each other by their nicknames. I like how ‘Youngduk Giant Crab’ is used because of Jae Chan’s long limbs. Very original on Hong Joo’s part. I love it even more when Cho Hee calls him the nickname too. I also think the name dog poopie is immature but still smart on Jae Chan’s part. She really does disappear whenever he looks for her, so the name makes sense. It’s very sweet that they gave each other these nicknames
Tumblr media
-> Jae Chan figuring out that Hong Joo is Chestnut. So so sweet. Though this confuses me a little, as supposedly he knew from the very beginning when he first saw her at the bus stop?
Tumblr media
-> This scene. Do I even need to explain. The reaction of both Jae Chan and Hong Joo are so funny
Tumblr media
-> Hong Joo and Jae Chan being saved by inspector Choi, also inspector Choi looking out for Jae Chan when Hong Joo’s condition was so uncertain. I just thought it was very heartwarming to see the relationship betweent these two at its peak
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-> the ending scenes. I just think its so sweet. The scene at prosecutor Lee and prosecutor Son’s is hilarious, she clearly kept aiming for prosecutor Sin but the first time Jae Chan caught it, then Hong Joo did. Definitely sweet, and then to show us the big photo from what was their wedding, very sweet. from then we can assume they live a long and happy life together

RECORD OF YOUTH //  KDRAMA DİZİ YORUMU
UYARI : Yazılar genel olarak spoiler içerebilir. İçermeyedebilir.
İmdb puanı : 7,2 Benim puanım: 7
Drama: Record of Youth (English title) / The Moment (early English title) / Youth Record (literal title)
Hangul:
Director: Ahn Gil-Ho
Writer: Ha Myung-Hee
Episodes: 16
Date: 2020
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Park Bo-Gum, Park So-Dam, Byeon Woo-Seok, Kwon Soo-Hyun, Jo Yoo-Jung, Shin Dong-Mi, Seo Hyun-Jin, Park Seo-Joon, Lee Sung-Kyung
Park Bo-Gum’un askere gitmeden önce çektiği son dizi Record of Youth tam anlamı ile kaybedenlerin hikayesi olmuş.
Defile sırasında Hye-Jun’a makyöz olarak An Jeong-Ha (Park So-Dam) denk gelir.
Park Bo-Gum’u “Love in the Moonlight” dizisi ile tanıyorum.
Park So-Dam ise “Cinderella and the four knights” dizisinin Cinderellası olarak hayatıma girmişti.
