Tuesday, January 31, 2023
Everything is shut down because of the ice. Dad said that there have already been numerous accidents from people out driving on the roads. I hope they are all okay, but I do not understand why one would drive in this unless they had no choice. Perhaps they did not if they are essential personnel somewhere.
Dad made Julien and me cups of hot chocolate today after my piano lesson. It was perfect and warm! I like having my parents home with us. Does that make me odd? Mom went over my English vocabulary with me and my Bible discussion question today, and Dad helped me with my Chinese lesson on Duolingo and my Spanish vocabulary and discussed my Physics explanation with me.

gonna be honest i think a huge weak point of immersion based learning methods (specifically ones like massive immersion approach/Refold and AJATT) is learning good production skills. In general these study approaches say explicit grammar instruction is unneeded (though you might choose to seek it out). So in general, you’re learning grammar through exposure. And word use through exposure. I think these study methods work well for comprehension skills, and that the study methods they use to learn grammar implicitly enough to understand it (srs flashcards, looking things up, etc).
But for a few reasons I think they aren’t super great for learning good production skills (and some of these reasons just apply to general self-studying languages in general):
A lot of people who DO these study approaches, and record their experiences, are beginners/intermediate. And since these approaches say do NOT focus on production until you have a high comprehension level, there’s just not much documentation of what to even DO during the production skills learning process. In general it is doable to find examples of individuals who have successfully done methods like Massive Immersion Approach enough to comprehend X material in a language, and who have explained what they did and their comprehension milestones. So it is feasible to copy their study plan and expect a similar result. 
But for production skills, there are less examples of people who’ve successfully learned to produce to the level of fluency they are satisfied with, and to find examples of them explaining specifically HOW they worked on those production skills.  I can think of only 2 examples of people I’ve seen who did mia and then ‘somewhat’ worked on production skills - Khalifa who studied Spanish (he did frequent tutoring sessions with lots of speaking practice to improve his production skills - https://youtu.be/lqxWYAGDQy0), Luke Truman (he produced language and did language exchange from the beginning of his learning and throughout - https://youtu.be/dDZgec6uzMs). In both of these examples - the people learned production skills by producing language with a language partner often (sometimes a tutor) to smooth out production skills. This does not particularly tell us if they could pass a language fluency test with their production skills, use their production skills professionally or in classes in that language, or if they’re still working on production skills (if so how much longer did they take tutoring sessions, how did they structure the sessions, and did they do any Other exercises to improve production skills?)
Since its hard to find what people even do during this production phase of learning in such approaches, its hard to see if it’s successful and by how much. Hard to see what pitfalls they have to work on addressing, hard to see what methods people do AT the production stage to improve and solidify their production skills. In general it is just HARD to see what steps people are even meant to take during this production stage if using these language learning approaches. In the examples I mentioned above, I’ve seen people practice production by simply TRYING once they reach a certain level of comprehension skill, and trying often. But that doesn’t address improving mistakes/issues with production. 
For accent - Shadowing has been mentioned in mia as an activity to do to improve production accent (which is a practical activity to improve that skill). For grammar mistakes and correction, mia’s Matt has mentioned making srs anki cards for grammar points he notices he can’t produce or think of and then drilling/studying them. This indicates looking up correct grammar points explicitly at some point - or does he just look at example sentences? Also this indicates still using anki cards, so is the solution to just continue drilling sentence examples even for production skills?

From what I can tell, the methods for working on production seem to be:
Get a tutor. Start practicing speaking at least weekly. Also do language exchanges if possible. (only a tutor might explicitly address helping you notice and improve errors)
Start shadowing (improves accent, and I do think this is a free study method that would help)
Make more srs anki cards to drill any sentence patterns you don’t seem to know how to say well/notice you’ve made errors on (so continue the srs anki approach that you used in comprehension learning stage - what I dislike here is this is still potentially implicit study of grammar, so for example if you made the mistake to/too/two in english it would be studying example sentences instead of reading an explanation of when to use which to/two/too which seems more confusing/harder to quickly grasp for the kind of learner I am).
I am guessing here - but if planning to take a language test (like the JLPT, HSK, CEFR) get a test-prep textbook/guide/site/worksheets/practice-tests and work through it. I can’t remember if I’ve seen anyone do AJATT or MIA and then take the JLPT test, but most youtubers I’ve seen who have taken the test in general got a prep-textbook or course ahead of time to study and prepare. 
So. If I were going to apply developing production study skills to myself, what might that look like? Since I don’t like using srs flashcards much, and I hate learning from examples when there’s quicker ways to get a correction. 
What I might try to do in future for production skills:
*Shadowing - pretty self explanatory. Improve listening skills, improve accent. (And maybe if I’m lucky it will help with active vocab a little? Although I’ve seen no specific studies on that).
*Write more often in language - easy ways to do this include journaling (journaly is a thing?), so I have time to look up words I want to use (might help active vocab expansion) and think about my grammar. Strategies that might help grammar here could include looking at language sentence patterns (grammar/sentence pattern book/website), and practicing substitution (using other words relevant to me, while practicing a sentence pattern as a journal entry). This could help me practice from generally ‘correct’ grammar form, while also helping my active vocab and learning how to say what I generally think of saying.
*Use a test-related textbook/site and work through it doing the exercises. (Like the HSK books I have). While not super fun, I think this is the closest way to get classroom-like benefit of doing correct grammar patterns with aids to refer back to.
Language exchange - aiming to talk/write more. This would be free, and simply production practice (would help with active vocabulary, might only be practice for other skills). 
Paid: see a tutor weekly. Would help like language exchange, likely be more targeted since less time spent in english, and more likely to receive feedback on mistakes.
*Paid: test-related courses (like the coursera courses, or Chinese Zero To Hero* courses: https://chinesezerotohero.teachable.com/). Benefit would be more videos, possibly more support, and exercises specifically with direction and aids to refer back to. (I’ve had Chinese Zero to Hero courses recommended to me)
* starred ideas I think would be most likely to help.

For me:
For free things, I think journaling based on sentence-pattern sentence examples would work very well. So read a grammar textbook/sentence-pattern guide/site/textbook then do a journal entry emulating that point with words I want to put into active vocab. I think that activity would put my already-owned study books to good use, and allow me to practice production/active vocab/correct grammar.
I also think working through a test-oriented site/book would help - I have pdfs of some so this is something I could do for free, and it would be something I could combine with journaling like the idea above. This would also be more progressive/organized more according to difficulty (which could bore me or alternatively help me build good habits from the bottom up). 
Shadowing and language exchanges I already do a little, and plan to do more once I start focusing on production more. I think for paid options - the test-oriented courses may actually help the most with the concern I have for ‘improving overall grammar.’ Tutors can help with production practice, more focused than some language exchanges, so tutors may help eventually too but not in that ‘explicit grammar improvement’ way I want to be able to mostly study and fix myself.

So I think, ultimately, what my study plan is going to look like for production skills:
1. Continue improving comprehension skills. Add shadowing more, over time. (language exchange if desired)
2a. Once comprehension is in a good place, pick a book I have (sentence patterns if I have one, or HSK oriented textbook) and go through it doing practice journal entries for each example. Try to use words in the example book, and words in general I think I’d want to use. (Continue shadowing, and immersion in general for comprehension skills).
2b. If I can stick to doing this, work through a book/site. If I cannot stick to this (boredom, badly organized book, etc?) then look at paid course options at that point (Chinese Zero to Hero?) in case a class-style organization/commitment will push me to complete it better. (Continue shadowing, and immersion in general for comprehension skills).
Then After all that, practice away lol.

so i think part of it is prolly that writing’s always come easy to me, and its the Gifted Kid™ trait that’s stuck with me into adulthood, so when I actually sit down to Do The Writing it goes p fast and is usually decent enough that it needs minimal edits. like, most of my Terrible Baby Writing got out of my system in my embarrassing elementary school endeavors (and then everything was great forever, she says, shoving the earliest stuff on her ao3 under the rug). i’m always writing, either fic or original stuff or journalling or for school- my major is a double in english and history, arugably the writingest possible majors.
the second thing is that i’ve been high key hyperfixated on tma for over a year, and fixation fuels the writing machine
a lot of what could be called ~writing process~ seems to go quickly bc its worked into my day- probably 80-90% of my non-prompt plot ideas are things i came up with having not-quite-woken-up just before my alarm or as i’m falling to sleep, and that’s when i’m most successful at coming up with plot solutions. that’s also when i tend to come up with Great prose, but i almost never remember to write it down 😔
on the class end, honestly... at this point some of it is the deliberate decision to Step Off and be ok with not-stellar grades. especially for professors i dislike or think are unreasonable lol, i have one with this INSANELY complicated contract grading system, whose A would require more reading and writing than my history capstone and the class that’s half grad students combined, so i’m just Gonna Have A B in that class. I’m also very very good at getting either other class work or fic stuff (or whatever i was hyperfixating on, i did take my whole bobbin lace rig to class more than once) done during class. Back In The Day, this meant having a writing notebook in with my class notebooks, and pulling up assignment briefs just before class started, jotting down the deets, and starting it on my note paper- in college no one cares, but even k-12 teachers never catch this one because it just looks like you were writing notes, the only time i’ve ever gotten told to put that away is when it’s obviously a worksheet. now, in the After Times, this has escalated to pulling up my document during lectures. and other things, sometimes a professor makes you very angry and you have to have a jigsaw puzzle just off camera!
the last thing, which i’m attributing to both fic and class success, is The Whiteboard, which is like 3x4 feet and hangs above my bed. Right now, it has notes for upcoming chapters of ttab and a checklist of all the prompts i’ve gotten since christmas. it’s also where i outline essays, especially bibliography stuff. i have a zillion different colors of expo marker, and i write out all the works im citing in a different color, and then use a source’s assigned color to put notations of page numbers or ideas under the sections of the essay outline. could i do this in a word document, probably easier, and not have to type out the bibliography again at the end? yeah, but the manual way works better for me, and also i don’t mind typing the bib out multiple times bc i find it relaxing (listen im love my style guide). arguably, half of my brain is at all times with my mom (its ok i have half of hers too we are incomprehensible but between us we usually dont forget anything important) and a third of it is on the whiteboard. i just 1/6 hangin around here in my skull, vibin
you probably didn’t expect A Novel, but i am going to end with the caveat that I’m super productive right now! but i also didn’t write... almost at all, from around 8th or 9th grade to my 2nd or 3rd year in college. sometimes school’s too much, or you’re burnt out, or (probably the main cause in my case lol) you’re dealing with untreated mental illness. you’ll finish school, or have rested long enough, or find a treatment/coping method that works, and it’ll come back 🥰

“I have no idea how I can help you improve your English, you’re almost like a native speaker,” you announced, pretending to be awed.
On the inside, you were freaking out. A lot. The reason was simple; there was something incredibly fishy about your new student and it made your hair stand on the end.
The lesson had been nice – once Inna let go of the insecurity about her accent, she spoke fluently and she made a great conversational partner. You had pulled out one of the difficult worksheets you were using for students you believed to be on a very advanced level and she had no problem with it. Which was the biggest clue, really.
Because this woman didn’t need your help whatsoever.
Also, she was wearing a wig, which was suspicious on its own.
“Thanks!” she exclaimed, sounding excited at the praise. You would almost believe her she was being genuine. Almost. “I guess it’s the accent I’m worried about? I mean, I thought that with talking to you, listening to a native speaker, it could get less obvious. I heard not everyone is welcoming to a girl with accent like mine.”
You obediently made a face as you started picking up your stuff, slipping into a light coat. “Ouch. Okay. Well, thank you for the lesson. See you on next Tuesday, the same time?”
“Yeah. Same place?”
You nodded, smiling nervously at her, hoping it didn’t show. “If you want to.”
You might have set up a next meeting with her, but you would be damned if you showed up. You needed to pack your bags and disappear – right now. Maybe even without the bags. You tried to keep your cool when exiting the café, your new student right behind you.
“Where are you heading?” you asked politely, already coming up with a dozen of locations you could answer her with if she asked you the same. Your heart was beating its way out of your chest as you nuzzled your nose into your thick scarf.
Where would you go next? You couldn’t stay in Prague. Should you head for Slovakia? You had heard countless times that the culture was pretty similar to the Czech one and you had kinda grown used to it. Or should you change the environment completely? Escape to Bulgaria? Maybe Italy? You could use some warm weather for a change… then again, Italians were all for hugs and affection and you couldn’t really work with that…
“Oh, Karlín. You?”
Okay, so… you definitely needed a different direction and chances were she would be taking either the subway B line or the tram, which meant you needed to use A. Or maybe go to the other side of the square for C, but that might be too suspicious – God knew what Eva had told this woman about your whereabouts. You couldn’t lie too obviously.
“I’m going to Želivského…. That’s A line subway,” you added when she seemed a bit confused. You walked with her for a bit, parting your ways at the stairs to the subway.
“Alright. Bye, Brigit!”
“Bye, Inna.”
You gave her another quick smile before heading down, forcing your legs to walk on acceptable speed instead of running.
Head for the A line. Blend in with the crowd and let it slowly carry you to the transfer corridor to the B line. Take the escalator, stand straight, don’t walk up. Exit via B line station. Hop on a tram. Two stations. Change the direction and ride one station back, continue several others as the track goes somewhere else. Get off the tram with a crowd. Get lost in an alleyway as the crowd is passing. Be pulled by a strong-
“Hey! Let me go! Nech mě být!” you cursed, complaining loudly so you draw attention as someone dragged you aside to an alleyway.
A huge hand covered your mouth and you bit down on it before you could even see who your assailant was. It didn’t matter. They had you and you couldn’t use your powers to reveal yourself, at least not right away. Maybe they would believe they had the wrong person.
“Ow! No biting!” a male voice complained and your rapidly beating heart stopped.
Oh god, oh fuck, no.
That wasn’t happening. You snapped your gaze to the painfully familiar face with the most honest and genuine blue eyes you had ever encountered and your mind turned blank.
He couldn’t be here. He shouldn’t and he couldn’t, because you had been extremely careful. Apparently not enough and now they found you; whoever ‘they’ were.
And they were using masks and voice disguisers, because you would fucking swear this was the love of your life standing right in front of you. They were playing dirty, taking you by surprise like this.
And they succeeded. Whoever was trying to get to Steve so they could replicate the serum just got themselves a jackpot. Except you were pretty sure you were worthless at this point; but they could never be sure enough of that unless they tried blackmailing the Avengers or Steve himself. Also, Steve would never let anyone die on his watch, so his most likely non-existent feelings weren’t that important.
You were about to scream when the hand muffled the sound again – was it really healed already? Why hadn’t they tried to knock you unconscious yet?
“Goddammit, Frosty! Keep it quiet!”
“Don’t call me that, you bastard!” you muttered into his palm, your knee shooting up to his crotch – he had left it unprotected unwisely.
His face twisted in a grimace that made you feel sorry for Steve even when your Steve wasn’t the one truly suffering – he couldn’t be, this couldn’t be him. His hand disappeared and you pushed him away with all strength you had, managing to free yourself.
“Wait!” he called out and you barely gave him a glance over your shoulder as you ran off-
Correction. As you ran into a wall. With full force, hitting your head so hard that for a moment, you saw the infamous stars behind your eyelids.
You stumbled backwards with a groan and your hand at the injured place, your messy mind coming up with the only solution you had – you woke up your powers, somehow realizing you couldn’t have run into an actual wall, because it simply hadn’t been there before. You barely felt the energy filling your body as the darkness embraced your vision – and the last thing you saw was red plasmatic energy and Inna’s apologetic face.

“Was it really necessary, Wanda?” you heard Steve’s (not Steve’s) voice from a distance and groaned, immediately remembering what had happened. Fuck, you were so screwed. “Snowflake?”
“Call me that again and I will freeze your balls off.”
The woman at the side of the bed you were lying on – yeah, really, bed, a bed you weren’t tied to, which was kinda sloppy to be honest – burst out laughing.
“She’s really something. I think I fell in love.”
“Good. Do you think that after you knocked her unconscious, she will fall in love with you too?” the man bit back, smoothening your hair from your forehead. You grabbed his wrist on instinct to stop the motion.
Also, you could feel your mask was off. Wonderful. You opened your eyes to see the wannabe Steve and shot him a pointed look.
“Don’t touch me. I have no fucking idea who you are, but do not touch me. At least be fair and show your real face, you dickbag.”
“That’s a lot of money to the swear jar,” Inna – Wanda? – noted and you eyed her only to see her crossing her arms on her chest. She looked completely different now and confused the hell out of you. She took her wig off, not wearing a mask (or wearing a different one) and the only reason you recognized her as ‘Inna’ was her thick accent. “And since you don’t believe him – or me – let me show you. I can connect two minds on a certain level and I will. Good? I’m so glad you agree with this procedure.”
Before you could do a thing, she took the man’s hand from yours and touched both of you simultaneously. You gasped and closed your eyes at the flood of pictures appearing in front of your eyes, the noise, the— the feelings. It knocked the air out of your lungs, flushing over you like a tide wave.
You saw it all. Every single memory of you and Steve, from the first meeting (oh how pathetic and scared you looked) and gaining each other’s trust to the cuddles and the teasing…  
The longing (oh, so much longing, the inner fight, the struggle not to take advantage of you, the desire to kiss you as you smiled at you? No, him), the love declaration, your first time, fighting by your side (the overwhelming fear every single time, yet so much admiration and respect), finding you in a snowed-in room with Michaels; that one scene seemed to happen in a slow motion, letting your brain recover.
All of the memories were strange as you saw yourself from above, from an unusual angle, but this particular memory was standing out with one more thing – your eyes were shiningly blue, unnaturally even; Michaels had been right, your eyes had changed colour that day.
Then the pace changed again and there was the memory of the tenderest love-making and you could tell immediately it must have been a very fond memory and an intense one too – spiked with a bitter taste of goodbye. The sudden rush of pain and fear would make your knees give out had you been standing,
And then came the anger – so consuming that you saw red for a second, yet recognizing Michaels in his prisoner’s cell with painful clarity. A punch. Another one and one more, yet not helping the gnawing feeling inside you at all.
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“Obviously, you wanted to isolate her. But you had that in Pennsylvania as well. Why go through all the trouble?”
“Oh, sweetheart, I knew you would be with her, even as a backup, running after her like sick puppies. She wouldn’t do that alone.  Protecting the man she owed everything though…”
“Who do you work for? What do you want with her?”
“What I told her. We want to replicate the serum.”
“…you’re not talking about the super-soldier serum.”
“Course not. Pff. Super-soldiers are so yesterday. The powers your precious Snowflake possesses, on the other hand…”
You were literally kicked out from the memory and shoved into a roller-coaster of hope, disappointment, frustration and denial. You caught a glimpse of a little flask with an engraving that looked suspiciously like an Asgardian one, of starless nights, endless line of torn off punching bags, but it was like seeing it from a train, too fast and blurry.
And then Bucky appeared. S.H.I.E.L.D. fell. Sokovia happened – Wanda, Pietro and Vision happened.
Finally, there was you again, biting his hand and kneeling him, endless relief and confusion and a spike of anger as you ran into an almost invisible wall of energy created by the Scarlet Witch. The hesitance about deactivating your mask; the rush of affection when seeing your face.
And pitch black.
You blinked your eyes open, darkness dancing around the edges of the simple white ceiling. A ghost of a touch on your wrist was present, but the sensation was nothing in comparison to the aftershock of emotions that bombarded your brain and insides.
Steve was leaning onto your bed for support, possibly feeling the same weakness in his body as you were. Tears burned in your eyes and you tried to focus your gaze on him, to feast your eyes, because you were suddenly sure it was him. Your heart swelled at the realization, the vital organ too large for your ribcage all of sudden.
His dazed eyes met yours, relieved as he noticed the change. He managed to give you an unsure smile as he lowered himself, reaching for your hand.
“Are you gonna bite me again if I touch you?” he asked, the supposedly teasing note lost on the way from his brain to his mouth. He seemed hesitant, afraid of rejection. Yet, he was watching you in awe and poorly hidden hope.
You felt the blood rushing to your cheeks when you remembered that you had bit him and… kicked him in— oh boy. You already had an apology on your tongue when you changed your mind and forced a smile. There would be plenty of time for apologies.
“No. But I might if you don’t.”
His face brightened and he took your hand in his, squeezing gently, careful as much as he had been when you had seen each other the last time. It felt like eternity since then. And after experiencing the grief you had caused him… you actually felt guilty for running off – especially now, when you found out Michaels had been playing you and you had fallen for it.
You had run off for nothing. You had actually done exactly what they had wanted, isolating yourself and making their work easier. No contact, no life, no relationships. Hurting people you cared about. Loneliness being your only true friend for so long.
And all of that for nothing.
It was a little comfort that at least you managed to hide from Michaels’ minions or bosses effectively. It didn’t feel important.
The tears rolled down your cheeks as you watched Steve, emotions displayed so openly on his face; the concern at your tears if nothing else. His fingers brushed your forehead as if unwittingly, the tender touch making your eyelids flutter close. He immediately pulled back.
“Head that bad?”
“No, you dope,” you mumbled, snapping your eyes open again. He watched you curiously, searching for anything that could clue him why you called him a dope. Not that it was the worst thing you had called him today. “I… I missed you and— and I’m so sorry, Steve. I-- I know I made a stupid mistake and I didn’t want to hurt you, I swear, I didn’t want you to get hurt-”
“Hey, hey,” he soothed you quickly, his fingers running through your hair and you realized you started crying for real, sobbing and all the ugliness associated with the display of weakness. “Hey, Snowflake, it’s okay— …it’s not okay, I think I won’t take you back to others, because Natasha or Tony might actually kill you, but-“
“But you won’t? What do I get then? The silent treatment? A beating? ‘Cause I’ll take it, I know I deserve it.”
His eyebrows furrowed, creating a worried yet somehow tender wrinkle. “How about ‘I missed you too’ treatment?”
Your heart skipped a beat as you realized his face got closer, his thumb drawing circles on the back of your hand and the fingers of his other hand still caressing your hair.
“What— what does that look like?” you choked out, a growing lump in your throat suffocating you.
That couldn’t be real. He was mad. You had felt it. You had felt it all, the good things too of course, but the pain too. Fixing things, getting forgiveness, it couldn’t be so easy. Too easy.
“Whatever you want.”
You observed his handsome face, his worn features, the exhaustion radiating for miles as well as delight and careful hope.
“That doesn’t sound right.”
He pouted. Steve Rogers fucking pouted as if he wanted to draw attention to his lips some more. He succeeded. You licked yours at the sight, mentally slapping yourself at instant. You had broken his heart – almost two years ago. You had no right to want any of that.
“Oh my god, just kiss already, your emotional roller-coaster is killing me!” Wanda whined miserably and you honest to god jolted to your feet, almost colliding with startled Steve. Your head spun and it wasn’t only from the rapid movement.
Jesus, you forgot all about Wanda!
“Wanda,” Steve murmured lowly, no chance of her truly hearing it. You did though and you eyed him, biting your lip.
“Do you-“ you blurted out and stopped abruptly before you could finish the bold question.
“What?” he asked softly, his hands hovering at your sides, ready to catch you if your head decided to send you back to unconsciousness – or at least to the floor. Always the protector. The rush of affection towards him was too much to bear.
Yet, you couldn’t imagine leaving this room without him.
“Never mind. We should move. If you found me, then they-“
His hand actually fell on your hip and your gaze shot its direction before looking up to his face in surprise.
“Wait. Do you?”
You gulped as his eyes flickered to your mouth at his words and you would swear you heard Wanda mutter ‘yes, she does’. Your cheeks burned hotter.
“Yes.”
His lips slowly spread in a smile as he leaned in, his kiss landing on your cheek. You chuckled delightfully at the familiar yet so foreign feeling and returned the favour.
When he went for your mouth with silent ‘Can I?’, you sure didn’t protest.
Meeting his lips felt like coming home, even with the kiss ending way earlier than you wished. But him letting you melt into his embrace after that was almost as good as kissing him senseless.

Do both Fives get put in school in your double trouble AU? Do they get to have a chance at a (semi) normal childhood? How do the siblings handle having to actually parent one young kid and an actually an old man kid? And does young!Five bring out the childish side of old!Five? I just love this entire concept and young!Five having to fit in with the absolute disaster that his family has turned into. He loves them anyway.
“You know, we could go to school.”
Five flips a page in his book and ignored his ‘twin’ aggressively. But he could feel the heat of the stare from across the room and it was interfering with his concentration. So he glances up to meet gazes with a face identical to his own. “We aren’t going to school.”
“Why not?” Baby Five asks. Five shoots him a look but baby Five ignores him with ease, face earnest in a way they both know is false.
“I am fifty-eight years old.” Five informs his idiot double, as though anyone could ever forget what with Five bringing up his age every other minute. “I’m not going back to school.”
“Did you really keep track in the apocalypse?” Baby Five asks, raising his eyebrows at the other. His face is full of implied doubt, and Five would be offended if it wasn’t founded. When Five doesn’t respond, Baby Five crows triumphantly, “Ha! I knew you didn’t really know how old you are.”
“The Commission estimated!” Five protested, “I’m sure they were accurate!”
“Oh? Just like how accurate they were about the apocalypse definitely happening?” 
There’s really no good response to that so Five just shoves his book off his lap and crosses his arms childishly. Not that he’s a child. They already established this. 
Mercifully, Baby Five drops that line of inquiry to focus on the other equally terrible one. Perhaps not merciful after all. “What’s so bad about going to school, anyway?”
There’s a pause between them, before Five bristles, “It’s - it’s full of children that’s what!”
“You don’t even know what school is like!” Baby Five protests loudly, “You never even went! It could be fun!”
“If media has taught me anything it’s that school is in no way fun.” Five points out, standing his ground on the topic. Admittedly his knowledge of schools is limited - he only tried to scavenge around a couple during the apocalypse. Too many children’s corpses for his comfort, but a decent source of pens and paper and similar supplies.
“Claire said it’s fun.” Baby Five holds his position.
“Claire is six and the only things she’s really learning are how to read and write and make glitter monstrosities to hang upon the refrigerator.” 
“How do you know it wouldn’t be us making cool things to hang on the fridge?” Baby Five challenged, suddenly frowning. “Plus I mean - I dunno. I love Mom but I feel like she should be able to do her own thing, you know? Instead of teaching us?”
Five would like to protest that he doesn’t need the lessons since he’s an adult, but Grace has been a life saver when it comes to bringing both of her boys up to date on the present day and also gently giving them books and worksheets about things they never got to in lessons since they left at thirteen. 
“You want to be stuck learning about basic algebra and geometry?” Five asks instead, because it’s easier focusing on how school inconveniences them instead of how they are inconveniencing others. But his voice is just a tiny bit more uncertain that it was before.
Baby Five sighs deeply, “I mean. I guess not. But I’m bored of staying in the house all day and seeing the same people and just. Ugh. It’s been the same thing my whole life! Can’t we just like, pick and choose what classes to take? Maybe we could do maths with the higher up students.”
“I’m pretty sure we’re at like, the excessively knowledgeable ‘probably has a doctorate in mathematics’ level of maths.” Five says doubtfully, because it’s true. Five has been teaching his counterpart the equations and tricks he’s learned after forty-five years of doing nothing but think about equations and time travel in his spare time, but it’s not like it doesn’t come naturally to them. Five had always been light years ahead of his siblings when it came to the subject, and it was often a point of frustration when the others didn’t get something.
To Five, complex equations and algorithms were as second nature as walking. Sure they’d had to learn the basic at some point, but once they got the hang of it, it was easy. Time travel equations were more akin to figuring out how to walk on water instead of just walking. In this needlessly complex metaphor, that is. 
Baby Five slams his hands on the desk, making Five jump (though he’d deny it if pointed out), “That’s it! We could go to college! They let you pick classes and stuff there, right? So we could just test into the highest math class possible? Or not take one at all!” 
“We’re thirteen.” Five counters, but his tone is a little more thoughtful. “We’d have to take tests and stuff to say we’re ready to graduate high school. Which we are. Actually I’m pretty sure Reginald had us at college level when we were nine.”
“He always did have high expectations. But seriously! Just think about it! We’d get out of the house. We’d learn cool things. Luther ‘n Allison would stop fretting about what we’re gonna do with our lives. A whole new population to play tricks on.” Baby Five grins with mischief, and it makes Five crack a small smile back.
But there’s one problem. 
“Ugh, we’re going to have to legalize our existence if we want to do official things like that. And then they’re not just going to let us do our own thing, what if they try and take us away?” Five has never had a desire to go into the foster system, thank you very much.
“No one ever said we had to do things the legal way.” Baby Five sniffs, as though offended at the very thought of going through proper channels. Which, well. Yeah that sounded like the Hargreeves way. “I bet we could like, just pretend we’re the original Five’s kids or something. We would’ve been what, sixteen? There have been younger parents.”
“Pretend to be our own children? That’s your solution?” Five asks, eyebrows climbing up his face in incredulity. “And then what? Make it so we died and? Left our little orphan selves to family?”
“It’s plausible!” Baby Five protests.
“Yeah, and it would still wind up with us having one of our darling siblings as a legal guardian.” Five said firmly, which was his whole issue with this to begin with. “Which one of the boneheads downstairs do you want to have legal control of our lives?”
“Mom could do it?” 
“If you think Mom legally exists in the eyes of the law you’re even more naive than I thought.” Five sniffs, “She’s even worse off than we are.”
“Well okay miss negative Nancy,” Baby Five huffs, “You figure something out then.”
“Negative Nancy? Have you been hanging out around Klaus too often?” Five looks offended at the very possibility of their brother being an influence on his alternate self. Baby Five sticks out his tongue instead of answering.
There’s a pregnant pause between them before Five sighs, “Ugh. I’ll ask Mom about it tomorrow if it means so much to you. But I still absolutely refuse to attend a public high school with a bunch of snot nosed children.”
“We’re snot nosed children if you haven’t noticed.” Baby Five gestures between them with a roll of his eyes. This time it’s Five who sticks his tongue out childishly in response, even though as an adult he should really be above such things. 
“Maybe we can take a history course and you can correct the professor.” Baby Five offers, a vague sort of olive branch. 
“Bet you we could make at least one physics professor faint by jumping into class.” Five shoots right back, taking said olive branch with as much grace as he can allow. 
“Dibs on the time travel stuff for a thesis.” Baby Five grins.
“Absolutely not.” Five shoots down instantly, “When you spend forty years working on inter-dimensional maths, then and only then can you claim my work you little thief.”
And that ends the discussion on that.

BUT YEAH essentially I don’t think any iteration of Five would ever really go to high school with other kids like that because honestly?? even as an actual thirteen year old Five is lightyears ahead on some subjects and he has issues. Can you imagine Five dealing with bullies and gossip and shit teachers?? 
Five would have one (1) person pick on him and break someone’s arm because he was taught violence is the first answer to everything. He’s genuinely kind of too dangerous to be around other kids his age. He’s also not one to suffer fools lightly, and so the first time a teacher taught something wrong (which they would because history class is full of historical revision and Five was probably there for half of it) he would butt heads with someone. I knew teachers who didn’t like to be corrected and I knew teachers who would be thrilled their student actually knows a subject, it just depends.
I mean Five is thirteen and that’s what? Eighth grade? That isn’t even high school yet. I was learning geometry. I was reading the outsiders. Learning all the prepositions in english class. Making bridges out of popsicle sticks in physical science and watching that one miracle of life video again. We had to run the mile every Wednesday and it was the worst. 
You think putting Five in a PE class anywhere near other children and dodgeballs is in any universe a good idea?? He would obliterate them. He would make at least one person cry and probably send another to the nurses office and then, when he got in trouble, wouldn’t understand what he did wrong. Because Diego threw knives at him and probably hit him at least once, a foam ball should be nothing and that kid is making a fuss for no reason. Doing sprints until he pukes - you mean an average Thursday in the Reginald Regime?
at least in college Five would be able to tailor his schedule and take whatever level course he needs. He could be in very high level math courses and be in beginner’s astronomy or intro to archaeology or linguistics 101 or whatever the hell he wants to learn tbh (probably anthropology or contemporary history courses if he wants to catch up to modern day??)
as for the parenting bit, both Five’s aren’t exactly what you would call receptive to being parented by anyone thank you very much and will aggressively tell you to fuck off if you tried
BUT both Five’s also wouldn’t know what the fuck a parent looked like if it hit them in the face with a baseball bat because when they think ‘parent’ they think ‘good old Reggie here to traumatize everyone again’ so their idea of being parented is?? being told to train, being told what to do/being given a schedule to follow with specific hours carved out for everything, private training, being told their flaws in excruciating detail, etc. so like,, if the bigger Hargreeves are careful and subtle about it and frame it in a sibling way then they can sometimes get away with it
after all if Diego drives Klaus everywhere, then it’s not bad if Diego offers to drive the Fives somewhere, even if they can do it themselves. If Allison fusses and puts more food on everyone’s plates then it’s not a thing and doesn’t need to be pointed out. If everyone has to check in with hourly texts to the group chat when they’re out after dark, then it just makes sense that the Fives do as well since knowing where everyone is can only be a boon after all the shit they went through in the apocalypse
honestly the parenting going on is basically just setting up healthy boundaries (making sure the Fives knock before just fuckin jumping into someone’s room or bathroom) and gently coaxing them into going out and doing things which they can frame as family outings/taking Grace out to see the world, and also gently nudging both Fives in the direction of healthier coping mechanisms/getting them to go to therapy, that sort of thing
Vanya is a firm believer in both therapy and setting an example so she probably gently encourages the whole family to find someone to talk to and holding up setting an example to the Fives as an excuse to get her whole family into much needed therapy is very helpful
and young Five ABSOLUTELY brings out the childish side in old Five, mainly because old five actually genuinely has No Fucking Idea how adults function and while he physically grew up, his social growth was very stunted by the,, how do i put this,,, lack of Anyone Existing Around Him For Forty Years so he has like?? vague ideas of how grown up people function but not a whole lot
like his primary example of Being An Adult are a) Reginald, an eccentric billionaire who didn’t work outside of abusing children like that was his job and b) the Handler who has no concept of personal space and frequently insinuates she’s going to kill him
and THEN,, when he actually achieves his goal and gets back to his family he gets a wonderful assortment of:
Luther, who lived on the moon for four years with no social interaction. Has never owned property or held down a job. Has he ever done taxes? Has he voted in an election? Does he even have a license?
Diego, who lives in a boiler room at the back of a gym and fights crime as a vigilante in his spare time after flunking out of the police academy. Has anger issues and an obsession with knives.
Allison, the movie star whose personal life is a fucking WRECK and is going through a brutal child custody case after she mind controlled her child on multiple occasions. 
Klaus, who in general is just a wreck of a human being who has no occupation that I know of and is frequently in and out of rehab. Also homeless and overdoses on a seemingly regular basis if the nonchalant-ness with the paramedic says anything on that.
Ben, who is dead and invisible to them but who likely died before reaching adulthood anyway so.
Vanya, who has managed to hold down a job and home but has no social life to speak of and taste in men bad enough to literally end the world if given the chance. Seething with anger and resentment that has been bottled down and doesn’t know how to deal with her own emotions (though that was mostly Reggie’s fault tbh)
but as you can see there is not one single human adult in the Fives lives that is even in the ballpark of healthy normal adult role model.
I got away from myself but my point is that Five doesn’t know how adults act and baby Five is capable of prodding Five into joining his shenanigans partially because of this fact and partially because Five just genuinely wants to have fun sometimes
and if, occasionally, the duo pretend to be one another so that Five has an excuse for acting as childish as his genuinely teen counterpart then, well,,, who can tell them apart anyway? and it’s in the name of the game and confusing their siblings so there
I have plenty of feelings about the double trouble au goodness gracious

Why Punchy Caah Learn English?/ Why Can’t Punchy Learn Engish?
This article seeks to explore the difficulties teachers face concerning teaching English in the Caribbean and how CLT is effective in addressing some of the issues. The article is important because it provides useful information about the challenges that might affect the acquisition and effective use of English by Caribbean students. Many educators are unaware of the challenges or fail to acknowledge or address the issue. Shedding light on them is the first step to address them. Secondly, the CLT is an effective approach for teaching Language and it involves teaching Language in an interactive and heuristic manner. This method is not known by many educators so; they don’t understand how beneficial it is to the teaching of English Language. As a teacher of English A and B, I have observed where the English curriculum used in at my institution and the method employed by the teachers do not focus on language use or allow for students to develop English Language to communicate. It tends to focus primarily on grammar, testing with grammar worksheets and using the language to understanding topics on the curriculum like descriptive and story writing. Why Punchy Caah Learn English?/ Why Can’t Punchyy Learn Engish? Teaching English within the Caribbean can be a difficult task. The Caribbean is home to many forms of creolized language and when one is immersed in Creole teaching them standard English can be difficult. Therefore, if a child understands and uses only the Creole within their community and home, learning English within a classroom can be or can be seen as a collision of the two languages. According to Erica William-Pike in her doctoral dissertation (2014), Caribbean students whose official language is English primarily speak using Creole. She argues elements of the Creole are seen in their oral and written assignments. She further suggests that what this does is limit students’ academic performance as they struggle to use standard English. Let’s examine the case of Punchy. Punchy is from the inner city community of Waterhouse. Creole is dominant in her community and her home. Also, her community perceives English as the use of an American or British accent. Therefore, Punchy has always had an issue with writing and speaking in English. However, Punchy did exceptionally well in her Grade Four Literary test, scoring 40/40 for vocabulary, 26/30 for comprehension and 11/12 for communication task. However, even with such a stellar performance Punchy still noticed that when she gave work to her teacher, it would be covered with red ink correcting errors. She went on to get a grade 1 in English A the CSEC level and a grade 1 communication studies. Therefore, one would think that Punchy has acquired the language. The truth is, she did not. She even remembered a moment when her Literatures English Teacher said she doesn’t know how she has a grade 1 in English A and B because her grammar is very bad. Punchy went on to postgraduate studies overseas and her professors complained about her use of English. She struggled with verb tense which Edward argues is a common struggle of Caribbean students when it comes to speaking English (1983). Therefore, the question that one needs to ask is, why haven't punchy learned English? Punchy knew the rules, therefore she could answer multiple-choice questions about sentence fragments, misplaced modifiers and verb tense rules. She also knew the elements of story writing, argumentative and summary writing, along with knowledge of the CSEC and Cape rubric to secure an excellent grade in the exams. However, did she learn how to effectively use the language? No. This blog will try to look at some of the issues that might have affected Punchy and other Caribbean students from learning English and examine why the CLT approach is an effective method in teaching English to Caribbean students. Firstly, Caribbean students are from diverse cultural, socio-economic and language backgrounds (William Pike 32) and they will impact their ability to learn the language. Darling-Hammon and Baratz Snowman provided a framework for understanding teaching and in their exploration of effective teaching, they suggest that language is an important part of learning and knowing one's learners. Punchy may not have learnt because her teacher failed to understand that though English is the official language, it is not Punchy's main language. Secondly, William-Pike suggests administration also plays a role, Caribbean students, learning English (2014). She suggests that many administrations need to review their policies to ensure effective learning. An example of this is that in many Jamaican many school administrations do not take into consideration the students background concerning the use of language. Thirdly, at times the Creole speaker thinks he or she knows English or is speaking English, but fails to see structural differences (Cecile Young, Jan 11, 2011). This is the case with many Jamaicans who live thinking they have acquired the language, but mainly speak using a mixture of patio and English with faulty grammar and syntax. Bryan argues that differentiation is important and without it, reinforcement is lost (Bryan, Jan 12, 2011). Therefore, it's not just about teaching English but ensuring the students know what is correct English, when to use English and how to use it in a particular context or with particular channels. The question now is, how can CLT assist in teaching English to Caribbean students? According to results obtained by the British council in 2015 English learners in Ecuador show more confidence in reading and writing but not speaking. As a teacher of English language, I have seen that with many of my students. They are unable to communicate using the language effectively at times the right in as many issues. In Ecuador the solution they decided to use if they use the CLT method which teaches through interaction and communication (Toro et Tal 2018) and it led to many improvements. Therefore, the same approach could reap much fruitful reward within the Caribbean learning environment. When approaching language in the Caribbean teachers need to understand that they are not or they might not be teaching it as a first language. It is important to understand that the language being used to teach and give instruction might not be known or used by the students in their homes or the communities. Hence, teaching English in the Caribbean space should facilitate communication and allow for students to be able to use the language in various contexts or settings. The CLT approach effectively allows for this. Language can be defined as complex array interlocking relationships which form the basis of communication for interaction. Therefore, when teaching English, the purpose is to ensure students use it to communicate. The CLT approach that allows for this “because it offers ‘communication’ means enabling learners to develop their communicative ability (Power 2003, as cited in Sri Diana, 2014.p. 37). It allows language use and communication which allows for language to be developed in a context that involves oral and written communication. It focuses on language use, function, purpose, context and communication. Additionally, language use and communication are very important in teaching English. Language use is about ensuring students can use English productively in unrehearsed settings. Therefore, the aim is not so much about grammar but being able to use language with proper grammar. For example, in teaching the English language the Caribbean student’s teachers need to ensure that their classroom space is not just about understanding and practising the rules of grammar via worksheets or workbooks. They; however, need to use holistic activities and meaningful tasks that see the students demonstrating the ability to use the language and in doing so illustrating knowledge of all the elements of the language such as phonology grandma and vocabulary to create meaning within a certain context. According to Sri Diana (2014) “In CLT, the teacher is the facilitator and guide, not the one who knows everything in the classroom (p.38). What it means is that at the end of the day a teacher’s lessons most allow for the pragmatic authentic and functional use of English for meaningful purposes.
