Notes: Oof. Battle scenes are hard. I know this is a little shorter than the other chapters but wow it was a lot of moving parts to keep track of! Leave a comment if you have a suggestion or any feedback. :)

The smell that confronted them outside the tent was vile; a swirling, dizzying aroma that was both metallic and saccharine. Astarion's stomach lurched as he broke through the tent, but he ignored the nauseating sensation, shifting his focus to towards the center of the campsite.

Bright rays of early morning sun assaulted their vision, a break in the gray clouds allowed the first rays of daylight to blaze into their shelter. The soil was caked in thick wads of mud and debris; it was clear last night's storm had done its fair share of damage. Deep pockets of water were spaced throughout the camp, and Astarion lamented the hostile terrain, which proved to be horrible for either travel or battle.

Karlach was positioned near the middle of their tents, her large fists bunched, no weapons on her person; Scratch was beside her, hackles raised, still emitting a rumbling warning to their intruder. A quick glance around the area revealed that a cautious Gale and Wyll were present, both hanging further back from the intruder, expressions laced with confusion and casting hands held at the ready. Lae'zel and Shadowheart were, notably, nowhere to be found.... a curiosity for another time. Just in front of the silver-haired elf stood Wren, her scimitar held low in her dominant hand.

Astarion gripped at the hilt of his own weapon as his scarlet eyes narrowed towards the stranger in their midst. What gall this man must have, to walk into a circle of unknown tents so brazenly.

"Ah... hello fellow wanderers. Forgive the aroma." The man stood, only a few paces between the tiefling and himself. His body was stock-still as he eyed the other party members. "And, apologies for the poor first impression." He added with a humorous smile flashed their way; his hands were lifted, fingers wriggling to show he wasn't holding a weapon.

"Enough with the apologies, mate! Who the hells are you and what do you want?" Karlach's enraged voice was an acute contrast to the good-natured tone she always favored with her campmates. Subconsciously, Astarion admired the full power of her intimidation and her innate ability to wield both sides of her nature -- a lion in a sheep's costume around her friends. Wren remained stoic as she expertly navigated herself around the sinkholes, focused on pushing herself closer to the center of camp. Her honey eyes kept flashing between the red woman and the burly, long-haired man; the vampire could feel the wheels turning inside the little bird's head... she was formulating a plan and running a million scenarios through her mind all at once.

"Gandrel. My name is Gandrel. And I swear I mean you no harm... I am simply passing through. I am need of assistance with my hunt and hoping to find aid from the hag of these bogs... if I can afford her blood price, that is."

The sharp chortle that exploded out of the ranger ripped Astarion's attention away from the stench-riddled man. Wren hissed, voice full to the brim with vitriol, "What a fool you must be... both to walk into our camp as if it belongs to you and to seek out a hag."

The ranger's scarred lip was curled into a sneer unlike anything Astarion had witnessed from her during their travels. He felt the fury and distaste radiating off of the half-elf as she spat out her words. Wren had quickly crossed the camp with expert footwork and she had positioned herself to face the intruder nearly head on. Karlach remained fixed in the same position, muscles coiled like springs, waiting for Wren's next move.

Gandrel nodded his agreement with a wry smile. He did not seem interested in taking on a group when he was so heavily outmatched. 'Smart man...' Astarion thought, head cocked as he watched the encounter play out.

The long-haired hunter rolled Wren’s insults off his shoulders and continued, calmly. "It is true. Hags are dangerous... and tricky. But I am afraid my trail has run dry and the task I have at hand is quite urgent... I am hunting a vampire spawn."

As the burly man revealed his target, the parasites in everyone's minds reared their bodies in unison, their offense soaring through the group in a domino effect. Gandrel takes the silence from the group as a signal to continue on with his explanation. “I am on strict orders to return him to Baldur's Gate and—AGH YOU BITCH!—“

The vampire's red eyes caught the glint of a blade just as a deafening howl of pain rang through the bog. To his surprise, Wren stood practically on her tip toes, holding the hilt of dagger in her non-dominant hand (where had she been hiding that?). The barbed edge of her blade was lodged soundly in the Gur's eye, and she twisted the hilt of her blade violently, grinding it further down into the depths of his socket. The brunette woman's scimitar simultaneously burred a hole into the man's abdomen with a sickening squelch.

Ribbons of red shot out of the intruder's newly opened orifices as he roared through his pain in a flurry of curses. Wren may have had the element of surprise, but it was quickly apparent that she was no match in physical strength or close-combat prowess when compared to the outsider. The large man tackled the ranger to ground with a crack — 'Her bones or his?' — and his mammoth hands drew desperately around her face.

The Gur's strength was enhanced by a potent mix of agony and adrenaline, exploding him into a fit of violent rage, Wren his only target. One thumb was lodged firmly in the brunette woman’s right eye socket with ease and the other giant paw held her chin in a vice-like grip. The burly male smashed Wren’s head haphazardly into the ground below, sprays of blood salting the earth; the blade that had taken purchase in his eye clattered to the ground. Wren still clung to her scimitar but was unable to wield it to her advantage while under the overpowering weight of the stranger.

Astarion shot forward with his dagger raised, but the mud-riddled terrain stuck to his legs and pulled him into an infuriatingly slow pace. He felt his anger ricochet through his body, cursing the bog and everything in it to the nine hells as he was forced to watch his female allies face the man’s wrath. The warlock and wizard anxiously studied the encounter, their keen eyes searching for an opening; both the spellcasters were painfully aware that they risked hitting one of their allies in such a close fight. For a brief moment, Gale's attention flicked to Astarion and he cast a longstrider spell towards the pale-elf, hoping to aid the rogue's advances. Day later, Astarion would reflect on the fact that it was the first time the wizard ever offered him a hand in battle.

The sturdy stranger landed a final, wrathful blow to Wren's face just as Karlach bulldozed into the Gur, knocking him prone. The female soldier straddled either side of the monster-hunter’s torso, pummeling him with her bare fists as she bellowed a war cry. Scratch lunged forward and grasped the stranger's forearm in his maw, ripping a chunk of flesh from limb.

The Gur grabbed Wren’s bloodied dagger from the ground and stabbed half-blindly at the dog; the blade sliced at the animal's maw and shocked it into retreat. Another swift strike to Karlach left the dagger securely fixed in the side of the tiefling's knee. That searing shock of pain halted the red woman’s onslaught just enough for Gandrel to toss Karlach aside and catapult himself back toward the brunette he'd marked as his quarry.

The ranger was back on her feet now, trails of blood leaking from her eye socket and the gaping wound near her temple. Her hair was caked with filth and crimson; she'd dropped the weapon she'd clung to moments ago. She was swaying, her vision blurred by the endless waterfall of blood coating her face. A sick, twisted smile spread across her mouth as she welcomed the Gur’s tackle, willingly crumpling like a ragdoll under his weight as he snapped his fingers around her neck.

Astarion finally made it to the center of camp, whispering a small prayer of thanks to the gods that never answered him for Gale's clever spellcasting. As the vampire readied his dagger to join the thrall, a burst of blue energy shot through the Gur, forcing a strangled scream from his bloodied mug. Wren echoed the outsider's cries, hands gripped around his beefy forearms. She was a conduit to the energy she’d summoned in her fury, and an overpowering crackle of electricity broke into buzzing fractals around the two.

The dense wetness of the swampland gave immense power to the lightening's current. A dome of jagged blue lines surrounded Wren and Gandrel; the electricity buzzed threateningly as it snapped its energy around the camp. Karlach made the mistake of reaching for the Gur and was punished with a jolt that knocked her prone. The Gur could no longer scream, now paralyzed in the half-elf woman’s grasp, but Wren was still hissing a groan of effort through clenched teeth. The ranger was exhausting all of her energy with the force of her spell, and all at once the azure streaks of lightening reverberated through the sky and dissipated. The Gur's body was still situated over her frame as her arms dropped with a squish into the bogland.

Astarion plunged the final few paces forward, using the opportunity to bury his dagger in the Gur’s throat as the outsider’s body shuddered with aftershock. An agile removal and snappy reinsertion of the blade, followed by a satisfying slice of flesh, and the vampire deftly severed the stranger’s jugular. Blood sprung forth in a foaming cascade of ruby, and the Gur choked out his final, strangled cry. The vampire shoved the threat’s limp body to the side in an effort to relieve Wren of the Gur’s weight. When Astarion turned to his companion, he nearly vomited the meal she'd given him last night up at sight of her. A pool of ichor and muddy water lay beneath her, brown and pink swirling in a filthy basin of water. The little bird appeared unconscious and unaware of the victory; her face full of burgundy, blue, and brown. Her right eye was imperceptible through the well of blood that sat in the socket; the left side of her face was caked crimson and swelling profusely.

“Get up, damn you!” The silver-haired elf gripped at Wren's shoulders. He shook her violently in his desperation to return her awareness to their plane of existence. The woman's head lolled sickeningly until Wyll’s hands grasped Astarion's arms and pried him, with much effort, away from Wren.

“Astarion! Stop! Get a hold of yourself, you’re going to hurt her.” Wyll shouted his plea. Astarion was clawing at the warlock’s insistent grasp, a string of empty threats escaping his mouth as he fought to make contact with Wren. Karlach and Gale both rushed to examine Wren while the pale elf hissed insults and threats through his fangs. The dam of panic seething inside burst without warning, and the rogue emitted a choked, agonizing cry. He continued to claw at the Blade of Frontiers, but Wyll remained steadfast.

"Please, Astarion." The warlock whispered, and finally, the vampire relented.

Shadowheart and Lae’zel tore through the treeline simultaneously, the unlikely pair making a dash for the heart of the group. Lae’zel holstered her blade when she realized the threat was neutralized, but quickly cast her gaze around the camp to assess if there were anyone coming to avenge the intruder. Shadowheart sank down in the muck and held her hands over the ranger, reverently reciting healing incantations.

Several painstaking minutes passed; everyone’s eyes were fixed on the limp body of their leader. Finally, Wren gasped a shuddering breath, and a blanket of relief covered the group. The little bird jolted in fear, reaching out to grasp whatever she could find. She desperately grabbed hold of Shadowheart’s wrist, fingers shaking. “Kol! Kol, I can’t see.” The confession was hushed with panic, the ranger's voice wavering at the end.

The entire group stood still, their relief sliding into unease as they watched the terror and pain overwhelm Wren. She was groaning, one hand clasped over her right eye. “Kol, gods dammit! Say something, I beg you!” She wailed in distress as tears began to stream from her left eye, narrowly escaping between bruised, bulged lids.

No one knew what to do in that moment but stand in a cloud of solemn silence and confusion. Mercifully, Gale mustered the courage to unleash a pink whisper of a spell upon the half-elf, knocking her into a slumber. She slumped against Shadowheart, and the group exchanged anxious glances, but no one dared to say a word... no one could think of what to say. After another breath of silence, Wyll released Astarion and moved to pick the ranger up. He carried her towards her tent, Shadowheart trailing closely behind and continuing her incantations.

Astarion remained on his knees in the mud for what felt like ages as he processed the entire battle. He stared at the blood Wren left behind, fingers dumbly grasping for where her schmitar lay beside him. The woman had been both captivating and terrifying in her uncharacteristic fit of rage. Up until this point, she was typically more inclined to stealth and tactical moves, attacking from the shadows or luring enemies to their death one by one. In most altercations, Karlach and Lae'zel had been in the forefront of the battle and Wren typically hung back, defending them with a well-placed arrow.

The vampire's head reeled. While she was terrifying in the center of battle rather than on the edges of it, her characteristic level-headedness tossed aside, she had been even more terrifying to Astarion in her panic. His gut rolled again as the flashes of her limp and bloodied body looped in his mind and he gagged, desperate to relieve the tormenting waves of nausea. Nothing came. Everyone rushed around him, tending to their own wounds or the wounds of their campmates, but the vampire couldn't make himself move.

Finally, Karlach came to him, offering a red hand to the pale elf. “Come on, soldier, let’s get you over to your tent. I think you just need to lay down for a bit.” She muttered, patting the elf's back with a strong but comforting hand as she hoisted him up. All Astarion could do was dumbly follow the tiefling woman as she walked him to his bed. Karlach was wincing as she bore weight on a still-tender knee and pushed him gently into the confines of his own tent... which he remembered he hadn’t even slept in the night prior. “Get some rest, mate. And then go check on your girl.” Karlach whispered, placing another small pat on the elf's back before she stumbled away.

'His girl? His… girl?' The sentence floated in the vampire’s head as he lay on his bedroll, too tired to move. His exhaustion from the restless night prior and the events of the morning forced the vampire into a trance. The words "his girl" echoed in his mind as he slept, the relentless chant lulling him through the merciful peace of sleep.

I’m crazy uwahn asylum!!! I don’t need to talk about the “Reasoning” side, as I already have. Only now, an hour after, is the cards of the solving scout truly hitting, though I had already been late to the drop of the cards themselves since I surprisingly forgot it was the day. The concept of cross theme scouts is so fun so far for the very first one (frankly, I’m happy feature scouts have been put to rest as a concept for now! It would be nice if they returned someday, the dedicated outfits that are special and just for one character are a fun concept, but I hope it won’t be soon. Clearly the designs themselves were a product of how tired it had become, although a lot of the FS2s were a hit in my book, to be quite honest.) & I was so excited to get to see Yuzuru in full!!!! I didn’t expect ITSUKI SHUU & SECCHAN TO BE THERE.

Oouh, ouuuh. Just like the other side I really like this side, too. Does the bottom of Sena’s hair look far darker than usual or am I crazy? Somehow I notice the shading far more than in the past, and with the theme and the outfit it looks good, and the pipe… Sena smoking… Okay. Mutual made a tweet about it and I had noticed too and it made me a little crazy. I really like this Shuu, too… the thinkeerrr. I don’t know he looks good. I wish he looked more frustrated, somehow. I know he probably got I don’t know botox or something or simply became conscious of his wrinkles (my twisted mind) and that’s why he isn’t as expressive as he used to be but I miss it nonetheless.

Yuzuru… the star of the show. I looove love love his expression. The choker looks good on all of them but on him it’s like Hahaha Hahaha… wow. My chest feels a little light. Is it just me? Um, cough. I now notice it borderline seems like a leash, akin to the ones the majestic magic outfits had, but he is so unhinged looking & clearly not being held back by anyone which is fucking awesome. I like it a lot. It has been compared to Noble Game in nature, and, yeah. Not to mention, the cards simply look good together, as much as they are serving in a different light regarding the style of their outfits, clearly they are displaying similar sides of him.

They have been reborn. Actually, I wonder if the scout story (stories?) will make a reference to the tour they shared as 4☆? … Either way, I love when Yuzuru is armed. While Kaoru looks playful in his card, taunting, Yuzuru almost appears as though he’s hunting you down, though his grip on that cane seems ever graceful. Yuzuru is also far more, [swallows], Exposed. To say the least. Just as in the past! The mirroring certainly feels intentional, but I’m unaware on if it’s actually true or mere coincidence?

Gosh, I hate these theme scouts for kind of making me want to pull for Both. That’s their tactic, isn’t it?! Well. I won’t give in. I’m stingy. But I’ll be thinking about it. Someone had made a tweet joking about the birds looking like/being Shuu & Mika and it means nothing, he’s not here, it’s stupid to even say that & Mean it. But it’s funny that Shuu appeared 😭 and on the Mika bird side, too… cute. Which is also the side that has their breasts out, scandalous in my opinion. But judging by the scout he was in with Sena in the past, I wonder if he has any standards at all. No, I shan’t shame him. Kaoru & Yuzuru are an interesting combo. It’s not like it’s the first time they’ve been together. They’re both stunning cards for all they’re worth.

Kyaaa! I’m so eager to see the unbloomeds, as well as their new casual outfits〜!

Hi!! I would love to hear your thoughts about Marius' experience of captivity and how this affects his relationship with Armand. You alluded to this in Gallows Bird and I think that's a super interesting thread to pull

[ Let me drop these two fics real quick to get it out of the way for reference sorry if this is obnoxious LOL but Gallows Bird (Marius/Armand) and The Lotus Eater (Armand/Daniel) !! ]

I have so many deep nuanced feelings about Marius de Romanus so be patient with me while I try to sketch this all out, I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START!

So one thing I want to mention off the bat, which is not necessarily canon VC but is relevant to my fics and how I write, is that I process a lot of ND/ADHD stuff when I write, and this goes way back before I even knew I had ADHD. So even going back to like my earlier VC fics from like 5-6 years ago, I think I was constantly inserting traits of myself into my fics and trying to process them in the way that I thought they were just character flaws at the time. AND LIKE this is also relevant because I wrote Gallows Bird to be directly correlating to my Devil’s Minion fics. For example, in The Lotus Eater, one of my huge emotional cornerstones in that fic/me talking about my own perceived character flaws, was the “he had been careless with this boy” theme. And I repeated that in Gallows Bird on purpose to link them lol. So that example is like, I was really inspired by like how ADHD can ruin things on accident; like you don’t take care of something, miss a deadline, break something by being careless even though you DO CARE. At the time when I wrote The Lotus Eater I had no idea about ADHD so I just thought it was like this bad part of my personality that I was really struggling with. I am more forgiving of that now.

And I connect this also to Marius in Gallows Bird because like, something I really struggled with as a person is like the ND/ADHD impulse to like RELATE TO PEOPLE when they’re trying to talk, like bringing up my own experience as a way to say “Something like this happened to me too so I can empathize with you”, which is always well intentioned! And I’ve seen so much convo from ND folks that struggle with this because NT folks tend to misunderstand it as changing the subject/being narcissistic/whatever.

Anyway!!!!!!!!! Sorry for that preamble but I’m saying that like, I kind of approach writing Marius as a mix of canon & projection, because yknow it’s my fuckin story and I feel like it lol but I think like the fun of fanfic and what makes people’s styles unique and interesting is our mix of perspectives and personalities and like how we choose to fill in the blanks in canon or interpret characters, right?

Canon Marius makes a few comments when he meets Armand about how like, this is someone who is as bruised and damaged as he is, and someone who can heal him, and he feels their souls understand each other. And Canon Marius is like, arrogant enough (by his own admission!) to see the absolute HORRIFIC trauma the Armand went through and go “Oh yeah I had horrific trauma too.”

How do we compare Armand’s trauma to Marius’s trauma? Idk. No one can answer that because we all respond to trauma differently. So I think to some extent there’s some headcanon territory here of how everyone interprets Marius, and do we believe him that his trauma was SO SEVERE that it IS on par with what’s happened to Armand? Or do we believe what he went through isn’t so bad/was 1500 years ago and he’s being obnoxious by comparing the two because he should be healed by now?

I’d also ask like, to what extent is neither true/is it not that fucking deep, like is Marius simply saying “wow this looks really bad, I want to know him for centuries so he has time to grow and heal”; like perhaps Marius at this point sees his captivity & murder as this awful thing that happened to him 1500 years ago and maybe it feels sort of disconnected.

BUT I DON’T KNOW, the thing about Marius is that he’s so fucking stoic! Like I know I’ve brought it up a couple times recently but it’s because I was reading some Marcus Aurelius to put in Gallows Bird lol so using that to like fill in some blanks with Marius, he reads like someone who is constantly trying to rationalize away his own emotions. And like! IDK! Maybe beliefs about psychology are always a phases or temporary until we learn more, but reading him in 2023 I just call bullshit on that! It doesn’t work that way! So who’s to say that his 1500 year old trauma isn’t actually still very close to the surface, and who’s to say he can’t be easily retraumatized whenever it comes up because he’s never meaningfully recovered?

AND LIKE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA THE AFTERMATH IS SO OFTEN ABOUT JUST FINDING CONTROL OVER WHATEVER YOU CAN, NO MATTER HOW USELESS OR UNHEALTHY IT IS. And that's also the sort of central thesis of Gallows Bird; giving Armand a space to process his trauma where he's in control. And for Marius it's just really sad how often he tries to control his own personality, his own feelings, his own mask, the way people perceive him, and it's such a struggle for him that it always eventually collapses.

I want to pause here for a second too and bring up a couple old posts I’ve written so I’m not repeating myself too much LOL but let’s also consider:

Trauma Hole Theory and if vampires are stuck forever within the trauma of their turning

Marius & Armand’s equal-opposite religious trauma

Marius’s struggle with feeling emotion

I think if we start dissecting ANY vampire in VC we’ll see thematic ways that their turning has traumatized them forever, between the violence/trauma around the act itself but also whatever ways they’ve been frozen as their mortal selves. Lestat is a perpetually insecure 20 year old who can’t emotionally regulate and must prove himself to everybody, Louis is someone who didn’t want to live at all and was given eternal life rather than death, Armand is deeply wounded and fucked up but is having like 2 years of relative peace and safety. And Marius is like, older, has lived life, knows what he’s losing and gaining, and has his entire worldview shattered after spending a year resenting religious zealots only to find out that everything they believed was true.

So I bring all these points up because I don’t think there’s a simple answer or a direct correlation here. Marius recognizes that they’ve each suffered a trauma, but he hasn’t really dealt with his own in a meaningful way, therefore he is not equipped to help Armand deal with his either.

I constantly go back to when Marius hits him after they come back from Kiev and I think this really hammers it home for me—Marius is someone who wants to strangle all of his emotions into submission, and he’s really trying to believe that it’s a matter of willpower to simply NOT FEEL THINGS. So much of Marcus Aurelius is about this! AND IN SOME WAYS LIKE, YEAH THIS IS MAYBE AN ANCIENT VERSION OF CBT??? Like we do CBT to patiently teach ourselves to think differently, but it’s obviously not as easy as simply shutting your emotions off or bullying yourself out of feeling any. And he’s trying SO SO hard to be this way, and it doesn’t work, so it’s not going to work on Armand either!

And like it’s not Marius simply being a dickhead, simply being abusive; I do think he’s really trying, but he’s fucking lost! HE HAS LIVED LIES! And god it just really hurts to see him as someone who struggles with this shit and who lies to himself about it, LIKE WHO HASN’T BEEN THERE? How many of us who struggle with mental health haven’t had those moments like, those tiny glimpses seeing behind the veil and being honest with yourself, but being so fucking powerless and not knowing what to do with it.

I know I’ve personally had moments of realization like “I am going to be like this forever” and it’s SO defeating, and imagining that sentiment for someone who will LIVE FOREVER just hurts me so bad!

We see this trope in media sometimes—certainly it’s based in real life!—of parents projecting onto children, trying to correct mistakes by breaking a cycle, but which only serves to treat their child like an extension of themselves and not a whole individual. So I think of that, too—Marius seeing himself in someone who was also abducted, and even though he also plans to turn Armand, he wants it to be beautiful and gentle! (He even changes his mind about it several times before he does it in a panic because Armand is dying! {this is heavily referenced in Gallows Bird because he realizes he's fucked Armand up to much to let him live anyway.} ) He also is sorta trying to fake it till he makes it with all this emotional stuff; like even though he KNOWS he can’t simply shut emotions off, he’s still trying to teach Armand to. And going back to Marius being a lil arrogant, I think sometimes he does project himself onto other people, or treat people better if they remind him of himself. So like, projecting some wounded version of himself onto Armand to try to rescue, vs risking it all for Lestat a few centuries later because someone who reminds him of himself actually WANTS to be rescued.

The IRONY too that like he spends his whole time in captivity as a skeptic, not believing that there is a God in the Grove, and for that entity to turn out to be a vampire!!! Hailey Banks is autistic

not just because i am too and i relate to her

1. The first episode we LITERALLY get the whole "I'm adverse to new experiences so I just write them down instead!". To the nth degree too /pos. That's what causes the whole series to begin

a big Thing of autism is need for a routine -or at least an idea of what to expect- to the point changes to the plan can result in meltdowns or flat out avoidance (as we see with Hailey).

with the world ending, she starts to embrace the changes, but still doesn't necessarily Like all the new things.

i could be reading to much into it, but in the theme song we get things like "make a candle with my own ear wax???" and "eat an onion :/" where we see this aversion to not only trying but actually DOING new things, too. this is continued at several points in the show, too. she flat out says "i don't want to do that right now; let's find a different list item" NUMEROUS times. several of those scenes do come from her feelings for scott, sure, but i think that proves my point?

friendship for neurodivergent people is ,, complicated (we'll get there) so right now hailey has this steady, predicable pattern with her best friend. she doesn't want to ruin that, and thus we fall back into the "i don't want things to change" part of autism

2. Hailey and birds

special interests are a bit complicated, and this isn't the place to explain it, but in short its basically a Really Strong interest in something. it occurs to everyone, but people with autism are more likely to experience either stronger or more frequent :)

birds are DEFINITELY a special interest for hailey!

- half of her list items INVOLVE birds and thus almost every episode has some sort of a something with birds (frank, the red owl, petey, etc) - she has a party and the way she wants to have fun is build birdhouses with her peers - she adopts a flamingo. like. - her little birdhouse collection <33333

ok, again there are so many better researched things than this so this is a BRIEF summary, but: autistic people just process the world differently. a lot of social cues go over their head because the world is processed Different.

so having hailey be a bit dense social-wise is so nice to see. especially because none of the characters penalize her or mock her for not getting it. instead they just, talk to her? like people?

examples off the top of my head about the miscommunication are - kristine wanting to have a date with scott and hailey tags along - becker flirts with hailey and hailey is like ":D wow ! what a silly billy !" (the 'i'm more of a ice cream girl if you catch my drift' / 'i still need to use this coupon????') - the rubic's cube episode where hailey doesn't understand scott's needs vrs her own and like ,, how those mesh together - that plotline where hailey admits that she doesn't have that many [female] friends (or any besides scott) because it's always been weird for her - part of what draws her to frank is that she's ALSO been labeled as weird and different, and she doesn't think that's a reason for isolation - at her birthday party she doesnt understand why people aren't having fun. because, for her, this is fun!! - that same said party was immeditaly followed with her admitting "this isn't fun for me; i would like to stop" when it comes to the truth or dare game.

there are a bunch more examples. again, this just for a general idea to show where this idea is coming from

things that can SO be autisic are marked off as "mature" because a lot of austsim is masking OR traits that appear one way in amab appear differently in afab.

this idea of "determination" can tie into the special interest thing as mentioned before, or why austsic people are often shown as "selfish": because they want something, and don't understand the social repercussion of saying no.

5. as i mentioned, the list thing.

as generally mentioned, autistic people want a semblance of what to expect from something. when they don't get that, those feelings can cope in other ways.

in this show, hailey makes a list.

instead of trying something new, she just thinks 'oh i'll do that later!' and then DOESNT! :3

Ranking Aikatsu Friends stage designs

1. Coincidence, Inevitable.

One of the coolest and most unique stages. I’m not sure whether it fits the song, but it’s just so pretty and cool.

2. Have a Dream

Very whimsigoth!

3. To the New Stage

It’s just so magical looking. I don’t think it’s necessarily the best, but I really like it.

4. Overflowing with Love

The crystalline water, flowing waterfalls and floating islands give it a unique and slightly surreal look that fits well with the song’s frutiger aero sound. The pink lace and gold filigree don’t really fit with the music, but they’re very pretty and they help Classical Ange establish its aesthetic.

5. The World is Spinning

The black and neon palette is actually really rare for Aikatsu stages. I don’t know, this stage is just really cool.

6. A nice “to meet you”!

The stage base has the typical AiFriends problem of looking too plain and flat, but the way everything was done was really special and engaging. The way the sky changes throughout the song, when the twinkling lights turn on and the ghosts appear, and, especially, the way Mirai interacted with the stage before the song began... very cunique!

7. As It Is

I really like the stained glass windows and the big, mysterious doors (which are also symbolic of Alicia “opening a door” in her journey). It was also cool seeing the ice cave, because her performance happened a few months after I had been inside an ice cave myself.

8. Guided

AiFriends’ CGI style makes backgrounds look a little odd and flat, although that might work just fine with this particular song and character, since it’s a fairytale-themed song and the character is an actor, so it gives off the impression of a cutout from a book, or a stage set.

9. Be star

It’s very unique and ethereal. I couldn’t tell you what a single thing on this stage is – there are no words for it – but it’s really pretty!

10. Believe it / Pride

This one probably would’ve ranked higher if it, and its variations, were not so overused. I think this is probably the best version of the stage, so I’ll just let this one take _ place and save all the other stages for the afterword/footnotes section. The warm, girly and elegant appearance of this stage isn’t really suited to LMT’s more cool style of music that often borders on being in a minor key, but the red and gold does match their hair.

11. The Scene Above 6cm

A bright and busy design resembling the parts of the city I do my best to avoid! It was really good of them to locate the cafe so that the performer is next to it while singing the line about a cafe.

12. We wish you a merry Christmas BEST FRIENDS! Ver.

I think I like this one best out of all the stages for this song. It doesn’t really embody “modern version of Christmas song that features a rap break”, but it’s very cute and nostalgic.

13. Identity

The main thing that makes this stage amazing is the effects, not the design itself, so I can’t rank it too high. But the shadow acrobats and animals? Really cool and unique!

14. Girls be ambitious!

You can’t really see the stage well for most of the performance due to the lighting, and it usually doesn’t look quite as cool as it does in this image, so I had to rank it a bit low.

15. Strong, Kind, Beautiful

It is really pretty, but it uses so many recycled elements from Karen’s first stage that I can’t rate it too high. Like, it’s basically just a dance version of the same stage (like when they changed the stage for Dreaming bird into a live one).

16. Let's A · I · K · A · T · S · U Together! (Coco Ver.)

This design is really different for Aikatsu Friends, so it’s a shame it didn’t appear in the anime. It’s a lot less physical-looking than the other stages - it’s all blatantly digital. Unfortunately, it looks coolest from this top angle that’s in the picture above but never appeared in the music video.

17. Let's A · I · K · A · T · S · U Together! (Pure Palette Ver.)

It’s cute and charming, but it didn’t wow me the way some of the other stages did.

18. I’m Not Alone!

For a final stage, it’s just... meh. I do love when they have cameos of coords incorporated into the stages (like in Pretty Pretty)

19. Okemaru

Despite the busy appearance, I can’t help but feel like something is missing. The bright colours are very cheerful, but I personally find the flat mowed grass to just be depressing.

20. Aikatsu Friends!

It’s alright. There’s a good attempt to balance cute and cool elements.

21. Thank You⇄It'll Be Alright

The usage of neon for the background is quite rare for a cute-type song. The neon instruments resembling an orchestra are nice, as is the piano surrounding the stage, but it still feels a bit plain or empty. (Also, the sheet music is just a bunch of illegible nonsense, and I believe the piano is not playing the actual song. Well, asking for that might be asking too much. It’s a cool idea regardless of accuracy.)

22. This World is Wonderful

Cute, but nothing special. Just like everything else about Wakaba. I do like the pop-up book effect that was used for the houses, though.

23. Open You Heart

It’s just nothing new. It’s very similar to other stages from previous series (e.g. the Girly Room Stage used for SHINING LINE*).

VARIATIONS OF THE FRIENDS STAGE

2. Bond ~Synchro Harmony~

Whereas Love Me Tear’s version of this stage looked warm and regal, Reflect Moon’s looks cold and mystical. The almost-entirely-blue palette draws attention to the contrasting orange flames from the chandeliers.

3. You × I / Let's Find It♪

Technically there is a slight variation between the two stages for these songs, but whatever. Of all the Friends units, the royal palace theme suits Honey Cat least, but they still made it their own.

4. Everyone Everyone!

The more blue-silver toned walls work alright with the pink stage.

5. The Thing That’s Only There

The bright pink and blue just doesn’t fit with the red and gold. The change from silver to gold does help demonstrate that Pure Palette is, like, a higher level and more serious now, so it does make sense in the context of the show.

Helluva Boss S2 E7 Reaction Notes

I finally watched the latest episode of Helluva Boss, and I wrote down my thoughts and reactions during. Here they are.

Warning: Contains spoilers to the episode

Thoughts as I watch:

-I wondered what Mammon’s voice would be…Cockney was NOT on my list of expectations. Wow. XD (Edit after rewatch: I think it’s actually Australian…thickly Australian. I could be wrong but it sounds either Cockney or Australian now I rewatched it.)

-Huh, Fizz and Blitz were fans of him when they were young…

-Only in Hell does anyone actually WANT to be a clown. XD

-Weird how Blitzo is so weirded out by Mammon’s pitch about working with him…though actually Blitzo really wanted to run his own circus, so maybe that’s why.

-I love how obvious this guy is. XD The jabs being made at corporate bosses here through this asshole’s whole character so far…they’re terrible at lying, yet people believe it anyway

Blitzo is all of us that caught onto the bullshit. XD This episode is so great already.

-Going for the jugular with that “women just aren’t funny” line. XD 1.) the show is by a woman. And 2.) …yeah. Most of them really aren’t funny to me. XD I know that probably wasn’t the joke (women comedians aren’t funny…), and we obviously aren’t supposed to like him, but yeah.

But also the “written by Vivienne Medrano” credit, AKA Vivziepop herself I think. That was great. XD

-“it’s not weird. You’re weird!” “It’s not exploitation” Exactly what Hollywood says now to anyone being critical of their stuff. Seriously, first South Park and now this…bravo adult comedy people. Just bravo.

Also playing an electric guitar version of “Carmen” I think it is. XD Even more clever, as that song was about how shady and manipulative that woman was if I remember right.

-…weird to hear adult Blitzø’s voice on his teenage self. Though I guess he went through puberty already. lol And I think Fizz’s adult voice is partially because of the fire accident.

-And now taking a jab at the entitled fans out there that aren’t giving constructive criticism and are demanding things then being all butthurt when they’re rejected. Finally an episode I fully get the social commentary on. lol

-$69.99 Subtle. Very subtle. XD (and “no refunds: if you don’t like it, it’s your fault”)

-I LOVE Ozzie here. You go man! Yeah he has his flaws too, even as a demon…but he is so sweet and so honest with Fizz it’s great. I also love the message here about both being a perfectionist…and being a people-pleaser. Destroying yourself to especially please someone that doesn’t give a fuck about you…because you think that gives you your worth. Especially after his accident… I have a lot of thoughts on this, but I’ll see where things go.

-Asmodeus calling Blitzø…somehow the most bizarre thing on the show yet. XD And how Blitzø is perfectly chill about it. Well I know for one, Blitzø knows about Fizz and Ozzie’s relationship and is happy his friend is happy…but I think this is also more evidence Blitzø wasn’t that upset at being picked on by Oz, and instead by being called out by his ex-friend, ex-girlfriend, and Stolas acting ashamed of their own relationship (which is transactional only he thinks…)

But he is at least a little polite when talking to Ozzie. lol So that’s nice.

-…the horse thing. He is STILL on the horse thing. Oh my gosh.

-Vivzie and her team are treating us to so much great stuff lately! First Stolas and Ozzie working together, and now Blitzø and Ozzie. This is comedy gold! Also Ozzie’s happy smile at the end of that scene when Blitzø said yes. Why are all these bird demons so cute? XD

-First, I still love Ozzie’s theme music (it’s the song from his debut episode) and second, cool to see his less flashy, public appearance in other parts of hell look from that first episode he’s in too. It looks really good on him.

And it’s cool seeing a Deadly Sin icon being more subtle outside of his ring. Makes me wonder what Bee looks like when she’s trying not to steal the show.

-Eh spoke too soon on Blitzø and Ozzie teaming up. Ozzie left, but I understand why.

-More jabs at Hollywood and their harmful treatment of their stars through Mammon calling an already incredibly thin Fizz fat

-Huh that rock music…I know I’ve heard it in the show before. I think this IS the Greed ring’s music…but I can’t remember.

-I figured one rescue and hug wouldn’t fix everything…but Fizz clearly no longer hates Blitzø and vice versa, and they are friends again it looks like. But I wonder if Fizz still has anxiety about Blitzø being at a performance of his…or maybe he’s just suspicious because Blitzø has always been openly critical of Mammon and these shows.

-“Smile inside and out”…I’m surprised Fizz doesn’t have depression like Stolas…

-Interesting how the background demons in this scene are just silhouettes. I don’t know if that’s to emphasize how he’s this colorful entertainment prop and toy for them and they represent real world fans…or if it was to save on work load

-Ooh these girls (the twin performers) look like they’re from the Envy ring (Leviathan’s ring) by the fish-like look of them

-I used to find Fizz annoying…but seeing him in the last episode and this one, he’s more like Moxxie. Too nice for this world when it comes to one-on-one conversation with the way he was so polite to those contest participants

-Oh yeah! Mammon said women aren’t funny. XD Ha! I thought that was just a joke for the opening, but he actually called back to it

To be honest I didn’t think any of their acts were funny though. Just cool acrobatics and talented crafting

-More “clearly the money-greedy corporate bosses don’t care about you, their stars, or anything but what sells”.

-I know people will still find reasons to hate this episode, but I find it hard to think of anything they could hate without really reaching for something

Actually…they’ll probably complain that Mammon-who is fat-is an asshole and they made him fat because of it…when really, I think it represents the greed thing. He’s supposed to be the stereotype of those fat business men in old cartoons and movies. But as a jester. (Edit: And because spiders have big abdomens)

(Edit after looking through the Helluva Boss tag seeing the nitpicks and complaints: Called it. And a few other things they really zeroed in on just to find something to hate about this. 🙄)

-Giant hellhound background character…was not expecting that. XD

-Fuck…they didn’t have to include that moment with the sign language. But they did…that’s so sweet

Though seeing that kid’s horns…I wonder if their horns also act as their ears? Because his are broken… or maybe he’s mute, not deaf, but Fizz still signed back (despite being exhausted, miserable, and wanting to win this and go home I bet) to show that kid deaf or not, that he took the time to learn for demons like that kid. (Edit: I rewatched it and the kid only had one broken horn in the later scene he’s in. …and I forgot Fizz’s horns are also broken but he can hear just fine…so ignore this theory from when I was watching…)

-…oh my gosh. The entitled fan is back now. This is absolutely commentary on both Hollywood and the Twitter freaks. So good.

-Entitled Fan remembers Blitzø too? Huh.

-Mammon’s 8 eyes…NOW all the webs around the place make sense. And all I can say is YES. Perfect design for the demon of GREED to have spider themes to him. It makes me think of Slughorn from Harry Potter, who was envisioned as a spider spinning his web representing his habit of collecting and exploiting the success of graduating students.

-Fizz making excuses for a shitty boss…also way too real...

-Again…seeing the twins’ performance, clowns must mean something else in this world. That wasn’t funny. It was cool though.

-Ozzie’s back! Yes! He’s so sweet to Fizz…and getting stuck in the door. XD

-Fizz is every famous person that is losing popularity to new things…the ones that cling onto it desperately instead of bowing out with dignity and what they have left…

-I know how Fizz feels here too…feeling he only has all the good things he does because of his fame...he thinks because he doesn’t look as great without it, that he’ll lose his relationship with Ozzie…

But man this couple is so healthy with each other. They try to be very private and secretive (and fail) which is straining, but they communicate with each other and they don’t allow for room for any misunderstandings…I hope we see more Bee and Tex too in the future (Bee might need a new VA if Ke$ha is still dealing with things or too expensive to hire) but these two couples will I hope play a part in Blitzø and Stolas’s drama with how they’ve shown they are in love with low-class demons as well…

Though Goetia are very different from the Deadly Sins…they isolate themselves from the lower class, while the Sins thrive on their company since they feed off their energy or it helps business and stuff.

-Oh my gosh, another Fizzmodeus song! Yes! And the adorable dance…man…I love these two! 💜

-Thank you, Blitzø! The entitled fan guy has been asking for it! And yes. You tell Fizzmodeus off for being hypocrites. XD He has every right to be mad after they bullied his friends. XD

-Oh man I see why the broadway version on Beetlejuice is Fizz now! That was an amazing song! Also Ozzie helping him. XD And getting…a bit more excited than he should. Hilarious. And Blitzø’s part helping too! This trio was awesome!

-The way the cheering kids track plays when Mammon appears in front of Fizz. XD I didn’t notice that until now.

-Yes! Get him Ozzie! Fight! Fight! Fight! Two Deadly Sins in their full power forms! Yes!

-Oh my gosh, the con artist Imp saying ‘I say I say’ again. XD He keeps showing up!

-Ozzie’s animal sound effects…so cool! And the twisting, lashing tails…I love how all-out they go with him being a mix of three animals! Cause Asmodeus apparently is described as having three heads (hence the two shadow heads in his mane) and this design shows that so well! I love it!

-Yeah I think Fizzmodeus being open will help a lot in several things. Including upper class demons getting their heads out of their asses about this stuff.

-This final frame is perfect! XD

Basically I loved this episode. It was so fun and I loved the worldbuilding seeing the leader of the Greed ring, and of course Fizzmodeus being adorable as always! 💜

I do think clown has a different meaning in Hell…but we did only see some of what they did. Most of the humor for me was definitely in the social commentary stuff. And as this is a show for adults…that is what you expect. Jokes about adult problems and mature themes. I got exactly what I was expecting from it.

no picrew for this mf but basically this is the god of the forest, it's a big pain in the ass for our main characters because there's...occasional possessions and flora growing everywhere on their clothes/body. it has questionable morals due to being immortal and its sole purpose is to preserve the forest. it doesn't have a corporeal form, instead bouncing its consciousness around any creature/living thing in the forest (plants, trees, animals)

𖡼 i wrote this entire book during nanowrimo!! i won, but i added 13k after november so it's only 63k right now, but i am editing to make it longer. it took me two months to finish draft 1

𖡼 i came up with the idea during summer of 2022, based on a playlist that a close friend gave me - they said boom, make a story, and i did!!

I like the lore I invented for how Callie from yellowjackets got her name:

Calliope: revered muse of poetry, and verse, and separately truth-telling, the one deity who had power over the shape of stories and fiction. Mom always had an appetite for Greek tragedies in her small inventory of literary references, next to Virginia Woolf and Thomas Pynchon, from the chthonic to The Bacchae, and Dad had let her choose Callie’s name at the hospital.

14. Are there any tropes you would only read if written by a trusted friend or writer?

off the top of my head, I don't usually seek out setting-change or mundane AUs myself, especially high school/college AUs (though gritty grad school AUs that spotlight structures of precarity in higher education are my jam 👍), or fic revolving around raising children, marriage (written as an uncomplicated phenomenon), and pregnancy -- the latter three form my trifecta of personal squicks around conventional romantic milestones -- so those! also not such a fan of (conventional) saccharine domestic fluff writing, despite my best efforts. but I'm also willing to read anything once!

the real answer i'm forgetting is that a lot of m/f tropes played straight would fall into this -- but I once read an m/f captivity trope subversion fic by a friend that would've ordinarily squicked me to hell and back and yet was well-written, and ENJOYED it, which is the one notable example I can remember!

34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?

THIS IS A QUESTION i'm curious about the answer for as well, if there is such a thing as ~a settled answer... I don't think of myself as the kind of person who tries to project anything onto characters or use them as conduits to work out psychological issues (not consciously, anyway, ignoring freudian slips of my subconscious that everyone can see through in 10s flat). though I heartily respect anyone who does it and think they should be proud of and own it. that makes sense to me; real life influences are often indirect and come through via your 'metaphorical constellation', as rebecca mcclanahan puts it in word painting: what metaphors haunt your writing?

to be a less coy, though, I think themes of grief/mourning, (the impossibility of) atonement, historical memory, and the costs of perfection (+ perfectionism, not as an individual problem -- I dislike most 'gifted child' discourse -- but related to wider environments and ecologies of society, class, biopolitical regimes, etc.) form the fretwork of interests that hang over my writing. very cheerful, I know!!

on a more literal level, in real life i have a casual interest in... makeup and fashion (osmosed from an ex-model sibling), geology, critical theory, ecology, and birds, so any time you see gratuitous details around that in fic, that's my self-indulgence talking.

oh, where do I begin. I feel this way about any fic from the MANY TALENTS I’ve had the good fortune of crossing paths with, whether as a reader or writer-I-admire-turned-friend. instead of linking fic i'm just going to throw their names out here. 100% non-exhaustive list: i read montparnasse’s fic at an impressionable age and her influence tracks a long subtle path over my writing — her ability to pack in metaphors that mix the beauty, cruelty, and raw pain that comes from a willingness to chafe yourself at the edges of human experience, risk and reward included, was formative for me. she's also refreshingly agnostic/indifferent to the usual constellation of "writing rules" that I see haunt new writers and which, in my grumpy opinion, sometimes hold back creativity

I’m an unabashed cordial (fka cordialcount) fan and I will forever rec her fic to anyone who shares fandoms/pairings with her. her prose has all the 3B’s: brutal, brilliant, and beautiful.

i've been the lucky recipient of SO many great comments! I can't possibly pick, what a cruel heartless question!! on a serious note, I treasure everything I get, but I think the ones that stand out are the ones I get on undernoticed fic that otherwise would have 0 - 1 comments and 0.0001 kudos, like the fiercest calm. I got three separate comments praising how bleak and yet desperately emotional it was, which was exactly what I was aiming for.

you’re insanely creative in your AUs or plot ideas, from plant porn to beauty in the beast with vampires but also magic schools with magic goddesses and incubi and cambions!

i was just wondering what inspires you when you’re coming up with ideas for fics and what normally comes first to you, the setting or plot or something else? plus, how did you develop such a strong sense of characterization? because across alternate universes and in every different life, your characters are so consistent and recognizable.

another way your creativity shines is the world building in your fics, it is always so fascinating and effortless, it’s a tantalizing background that really hooks me into the world of your stories. i don’t know if you have more notes on world building that didn’t make it into your fics but please know i would sell my soul for a napkin of extra notes for your fics. do you world build as you write or plan it in advance? and do some things you consider fic-canon not make it into the final edit or do you try to work everything you have in?

Hi wow this is all so kind of you to say!! I'm so glad you enjoy my writing <3

so, I would say that usually when I am starting on a new story, I start with the characters and think about what kinds of situations, settings, conflicts, genres, themes, etc I want to write them in. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres because in many ways it feels the most flexible -- I am probably halfway between a pantser and a plotter in terms of story-planning, so I enjoy having space in my plots for them to change if I feel like they need to. I usually know the ending early on in the process tho.

Worldbuilding is one of my favorite aspects of writing and partly why I am so partial to writing AUs. I tend to do more planning for the worldbuilding up front than I do with the plot: my story worlds are scaffolds on which I can build the plot, if that makes sense. I've loved worldbuilding since I was a kid, and I think the best advice I can give for how to build story worlds is to read a lot of books. Books I read as a kid still influence how I worldbuild today (a few that come to mind are the Redwall, Series of Unfortunate Events, Narnia, & May Bird books), as well as videogames (Dragon Age always), places I've actually been, and honestly my academic reading/writing also definitely influences my creative writing, i.e., when thinking about how to write about social conflicts and cultural norms and especially colonization/empire in the worlds I write stories about.

For writing both characters and worldbuilding, I think it's really key to figure out how to suspend your readers' disbelief, and this starts with suspending your own disbelief. You have to believe in the worlds and characters you create. This means being comfortable with writing your characters in all kinds of situations, because people only show a lot of aspects of themselves (and therefore seem like real people, because people & their personalities & motives & backgrounds are complex) if they experience a lot of things. This may be why I gravitate towards writing stories with more dramatic tones and plots, because I find it much more fun to figure out characters by stressing them out. Seriously, I think characters solidify when they're placed in wild situations lol! And these don't necessarily need to be really serious perilous situations, but rather events and conflicts that fundamentally challenge the characters and force you to imagine how they might react in ways that feel true to how you've written them.

For example, one of my favorite character types to write is "kind of a bitch but like, a complicated bitch and kind of justified in their bitchiness because they're going through some stuff." Laurent from Captive Prince definitely falls under this; Keith from VLD, Essek from CR, and Astarion from BG3 also fit into this category (albeit all in really different ways and shades of bitchiness haha). I find these characters fun to write because they're characters who should probably change -- they also have clearly defined flaws and desires, which is great when you have to create a conflict and keep readers engaged/make readers get attached to these characters.

It's tough to root for a character who is consistently a bitch, never feels bad about it, has no reason for being that way, is never critiqued by other characters about it, and is not influenced to change by the narrative at all. It's a lot easier to root for a character who has some kind of inner conflict going on which is complemented by the outer conflict/s of the story. I'm especially fond of characters who have trust issues, because this is a flaw that obviously lends itself well to romance plots, but also can have some very interesting backstory implications and lead to really dynamic yet believable character development, as trust can be built incrementally and also wax and wane in a way that feels natural and builds narrative tension in a compelling way. It also allows you to work on other characters, since trust requires at least two people :)

For an April fool's game, they have no right to make this good...but they still did it.

IT'S SOOOO UNBELIEVABLY GOOD LIKE HOLY HECK?!

Where do I start? Okay, history-ish lesson time.

This is not the first time that Sonic's PR team make a game specifically for an april fool's joke. During Aaron's era, there was an infamous website game titled 'Big's Big Adventure 3'. And as the name suggests, it tells a story of how Big showed up in random places like you might/might not see him as a cameo during the SA2 event.

Same format as TMoSTH, a visual novel style game with uh....flappy bird-inspired game, and of course the fishing segment as sub content.

And that's it. I like the story not gonna lie. I enjoy playing it. Full of meme content. But the existence of the game itself was huge in 2016. It may not be the best thing to re-live it in this era in my opinion.

I bet the website is down now but you can still watch some playthroughs from youtube though.

And after seven years, the new Sonic PR team create a game for another april fool's joke. But this time....I don't think this is not full of memes to be laughing by the community. It's...unexpectedly something else.

Sure the highlight of the trailer first and foremost: "Sonic is dead" was a real deal. It was all over the internet even though you were not active on sonic at that time.

I personally didn't watch the trailer yet I knew that highlight. So I play it blindly without any knowledge of what the hell happened before this existed.

But as I open the game, I was shocked. It starts with deep and slow music like typical mystery games you played, great art designs, and a nice choice of colors that encapsulated the title itself. Simple, yet the qualities that represent are almost like it was not made for such a free game, even as a joke for that day.

I have yet to start the game but it left me with such an impression.

I love everything about this game. They nailed every. single. one! Even with each traits that were being misrepresented by fandom, somehow corrected to their very core! What is this? What in the world am living right now??

And this is one of the stories that I want to read in fan fiction. Just a group comes together creating unexpected events or just doing their normal life. Whether Eggman got in the way or not is up to you. It has silly and quirky moments freely.

The jokes landed perfectly without making them OOC. In fact, I got a bunch of new headcanon from that game. It has so many memorable scenes that you might already see most of them on the internet.

For the protagonist, yes I can confidently say I related to Barry that much. Even at some point, I felt I was inside the train surrounded by these extravagant abnormal people. I truly thought every response that Barry had was exactly like mine if I was in that scenario. (looking at you Tails)

For a mystery game, I kinda think how they summarize the whole case cooouuld have been better. The sub-ones did a great job to wrapped up the messes. I don't hate the whole problem tho. I actually adore it. Hmm, I might need to replay it again soon and see if it could change my mind about it.

Mini-games! It might be my personal bias so apologize for my taste. If I want to, they should add an additional setting to adjust Sonic's position. I struggled A LOT during mini-games. God why Tails had to toss every thinking section to me, please stop T_T.

For Music... wow I didn't prepare how well thought out this music has. The ost of this game is uniquely true to its theme and It still stuck in my head for days. The theme song and the interrogation section are my favorites. Some mini-game section is also catchy and upbeat!

Artstyle! Oh I loooove the design throughout the game. Each character got well design clothes that are creative and also stay true to their character with a bonus to the lore of the story! Deegeemin has my list as one of fav sonic artists.

MSB character headcanons: Dorothy Ann

Huge Star Trek fan. Her favorite series are TOS and Voyager, and her favorite character is Captain Janeway.

Has a pet Maine Coon cat named Teddy. She named him that because he’s big and fluffy, like a teddy bear.

Is always torn between just enjoying a sci-fi film and getting annoyed with the scientific inaccuracies. She is usually able to let it slide, since she’s been on some wild adventures as a student in Ms. Frizzle’s class.

Cannot for the life of herself remember any good jokes. Carlos keeps trying to teach her some jokes, but D.A. has trouble memorizing them. Facts and figures are much easier.

The one time D.A. does crack a joke on screen (“We’re on the ‘erode’ to ruin” in Rocks and Rolls), it’s the first time she’s ever done so without having to consult a book. And of course, Carlos is very proud of her.

By day: serious science student. By night: writes fanfiction on AO3. She goes by the username “stellar-falcon.”

Doesn’t want anybody to know she writes fanfiction. Unfortunately, it’s becoming harder and harder. The whole class loves stellar-falcon’s Star Trek fics and they keep up with their stories almost religiously.

Also has a pet parrot named Dinah. Dinah is older than D.A. herself!

She’s from a fairly well-off family.

100% autistic. Loves infodumping to anyone who will listen. Never goes anywhere without her book bag, which I’m pretty sure is her comfort item.

On her friendship with Carlos: (I ship the 2 of them btw)

Right off the bat, the two of them were rivals. Sure, they were also friends, but boy, were they competitive.

For the longest time, only Phoebe knows D.A. has a crush on Carlos.

Said crush developed very gradually. D.A. and Carlos tend to bicker a lot, but after a while, they find they actually enjoy each other’s company.

One thing they have in common is that they both like birds. Unfortunately, Phoebe knows this, and keeps trying to set them up for bird-watching dates.

Example:

Phoebe: Hey, D.A., are you free this weekend? I’m going birding at Walkerville Swamp.

D.A.: Sure, I’d love to go! I’ll get some great observations for my bird journal.

Phoebe: Great! See you on Saturday!

Phoebe, a few minutes later: Hey! Carlos! Do you want to go bird-watching with me on Saturday?

Carlos: That sounds fun, but I’m kind of busy. (Lying)

Phoebe: ….

Carlos: Fine, I’ll come. But both my siblings are coming.

Phoebe, thinking: hmmm. That complicates things.

The next Saturday:

Everyone: Arrives at the swamp, but separately.

Phoebe: D.A.! You made it just in time! There’s a whole bunch of cool birds here!

D.A. : Whoa, cool!

The two of them: *nerding out about birds and other swamp wildlife*

Meanwhile: *Carlos and his two siblings (Mikey and Maria) are looking for birds as well*

Phoebe, seeing them: Hey, glad you could make it! We found a big flock of black-necked stilts here!

Carlos: This, I have to see! … Oh, wow!

Carlos, D.A., and Phoebe: *nerding out about birds*

Phoebe: *sneaks away, leading Mikey and Maria with her*

D.A., not noticing at first: *talking about swamp birds* Isn’t that cool, Phoebe? Phoebe? Where are you?

Carlos: Huh. I don’t see her, either. She must have wandered off. *notices that his siblings are also gone* WAIT A MINUTE!

D.A.: Did Phoebe just—

Carlos: *sigh* Yep.

D.A.: I’ll get her for this!

They still laugh about the “black-necked stilt incident” long after it occurs.

Runs a science-themed blog on Tumblr. Completely separate from her fanfiction account. She didn’t make a sideblog for her fanfiction. She made an entirely different account.

Enjoys having “girls night” with Phoebe, Keesha, and Wanda. What this means is watching movies, playing card games, trying on clothes, etc…

There’s also a fair amount of scary storytelling that goes on during the girls’ sleepovers.

Usually D.A. hosts the sleepovers, since her house is the biggest and has the comfiest guest spaces.

Everyone is still trying to solve the mystery of who stellar-falcon really is. Mikey has a pretty good guess, but surely it can’t be D.A.? Surely it’s someone else who’s writing these really good Star Trek stories….

The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

this fucking book..... this is the final book in the original mistborn trilogy which i recommend to everybody. i struggle to describe why people should read it beyond JUST TRUST ME because the less you know going in the better. so what i will say is, short of lord of the rings, i have never read a more powerful story of hope and resistance in my life. and i named my cat after the main character.

p.s. the villain you meet in book 1 is called the Lord Ruler yes it's a stupid name but even King of Modern Fantasy Branderson Sando makes mistakes

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

the stormlight archive is the series you read when you've finished mistborn and want to be fed a constant stream of sanderson content with the slack-jawed fervor of a starving baby bird. PHENOMENAL character development and worldbuilding, rich in foreshadowing and detail for the eagle-eyed reader, excellent fantasy!representation especially when it comes to mental illness. this book is my favorite in the series because of A) the character interactions, and B) That One Chapter. if you know you know

do you ever read a book and think "wow i loved it. sure wish i could read more of it forever without compromising the quality of the plot" well THIS IS THAT. i'd highly recommend the audiobooks!

A Marvelous Light by Freya Marske

i love fantasy and i loooove romance and this is book (also first in a series) is an INCREDIBLE example of both elements combining in the best way possible. as soon as i finished it i started right over. (i also did this with the kingdoms by natasha pulley which i would recommend for similar reasons). i don't want to give too much away but it presents themes of connection and vulnerability incredibly well, and not just in a romantic sense.

Entangled Life by MERLIN SHELDRAKE (best author name ever)

book about mushrooms and fungus. you cannot understand what nature is until you understand that fungus rules the earth and we're just living on it. this book will blow your FUCKING mind. the knowledge elevates and humbles you in equal measure, it astonishes, it creates the kind of book you need to read with someone next to you so every third sentence you can put it down and say "holy fuck listen to this"

(BONUS: Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are by Frans de Waal. does what it says on the tin. i love it for similar reasons. if you have ANY interest in animal cognition you will get a lot out of this book)

Exposure by Robert Bilott

if you haven't seen the film Dark Waters first of all go watch it right now, and then read this book, which the film is based on. i will be honest i had a complete breakdown afterwards — because of capitalism, because of corruption, because of real life evil. but as powerfully as Exposure depicts those things, it even more powerfully highlights resistance, resilience, and the power of collective action. everyone on earth should read it.

Overuse of ‘just’ 

Introspection & pining but the POV character doesn’t know they’re doing either 

overlong luxe descriptions of landscape and interior design (more kindly stated as environmental storytelling maybe) 

It should be at least slightly funny. I want people to laugh. 

24. Are there any easter eggs in [insert fic], and if so, what are they?

Ough good question… but I don't think I have any fun answers for any of my current fics. I wish I were clever enough to insert easter eggs into my writing, but my brain partitions fandom content into specific little boxes that don’t have much interaction between each other

I DO have one Liufang fic that will probably remain unpublished where Sun Jing and Qiu Tong from Tamen de Gushi (她们的故事) have cameos as Bai Zhan and Qian Cao disciples! 

45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?

This is going to sound very funny, but. I have gotten better about sharing my writing lol. Not at autorial things that actually matter, like pacing, or analysis, or rising falling action whatever! I have gotten better at sharing my writing :) 

I write a LOT and I share very little. Mostly because I write solely for an audience of one (1) (me). Most of what I’ve written has never been read by anyone besides me, and probably won’t ever have any kind of audience except for me. And I’m totally okay with that!  

Case in point: 

Moshang WIP word count to date: 192k (excluding 33k of my forays into Bingqiu and Liushang) 

Moshang Published word count: 117k 

Not bad, actually! (honestly I thought I'd written more lol) Now let’s take a look at my older fandoms 

Eyeshield 21 WIP word count: 602k 

ES21 Published word count: 14k  

LMAO WHAT. I am covering my face with one hand. No comment. 

Homestuck WIP word count: 150k 

Homestuck Published word count: 0 

LOL. again, no comment. 

The more I feel like I need to make my own food, the more I tend to write (by god ES21 i am looking at you with wet and pathetic eyes…) and I only publish if I feel like i have something good to contribute. I suffer from an overbearing need for perfection (self-perceived) so if it doesn’t pass my own vibe check/exactingly high standards, I won’t publish it. This means that there are tons of shorter minifics, character interactions, drabbles, AUs etc that simply languish in my docs bc I guess my internal metric for ‘contributes to fandom’ is longfic. I got a little better at sharing my writing with Moshang, mostly because I liked what I had written so much and at the time, it didn’t feel like anyone had done exactly what I wanted to see. Haha perhaps it was only my ego that got bigger, and not my writing skills? :')

ANYWAYS. I would like to try and use my brain more when engaging with things and creating instead of just devouring something and then smashing whatever is in my brains directly onto a doc and being like OOOO WOW!!!! COOL FIC!! I LOVE IT!! MWAH (all themes, motifs, and analysis fly directly over my head and escape like a flock of birds) but also my brainspace is so small and crammed so full of whatever the OTP of the era is that it’s quite difficult for me :’)

46. Do you prefer writing on your phone or on a computer (or something else)? Do you think where you write affects the way you write?

I write almost exclusively on my phone lmao. Lying in bed in the dark, on my phone, on gdocs! 

I edit exclusively on the computer, so any writing that needs to be added at this stage is on the laptop. This is the most grueling part of writing for me and makes me gnash my teeth so much. Editing is so hard and so time consuming and spurs the perfectionist in me like someone kicking a horse into gallop lmao.  

If i didn't write on my phone, i wouldn’t get any writing done, I think. This is also part of why chapter updates take so long. Always bottlenecked at the editing point!

i love Turnabout Samurai because it introduced my favorite track: the Steel Samurai theme!! i don't care what anyone says, that song's a literal banger. i even made it my phone ringtone. it also solidified Gumshoe's spot in my favorite characters list when he saVED OUR ASS AT THE END?? LIKE WOW GUMSHOE PLS I LOVE YOU FOR THAT TYSM YOU'RE THE BEST

i think this is kind of obvious but i loved Turnabout Goodbyes because of Edgeworth LOL!! Edgey... he's my precious baby.... i also rlly liked how the bird was called up to the witness stand, plus Lotta was pretty cool too. that case was great when it came to geting justice for Edgeworth, and with helping him find closure. poor man was struggling with his dad's death for so long.

Rise from the Ashes was SO. COOL. I GOT REALLY INTO IT. i think i liked it because it felt exhilarating to me?? both that and i felt like it was incredibly interesting too— i liked its story, and i was invested. outing myself rn but i'm a texan myself so Marshall's whole shebang made me wheeze, tho his lil cowboy theme song was great too. i like listening to it. on another note, GANT GENUINELY SCARED ME AND STILL DOES. there's just something about his smiley disposition laced with underlying threats that got me shaking in my cowboy boots. if he were standing right in front of me i'd def shit myself 100%

i loved Turnabout Big Top mostly because of the fun factor. i had a lot of fun with it, plus i rlly liked Acro 😭. i like Maximillion's design, i think he looks very pretty (tho he needs to back off of my child Regina or he will catch these hands). i later learned that Acro is the only AA character to accidentally kill someone that wasn't his original target, and it garnered quite a bit of sympathy from me. up until that point, the killers didn't really show any remorse for their actions, and the fact that Acro felt awful for killing Regina's dad reallt made me feel for him. he's def one of my favorite criminals because of that.

FAREWELL, MY TURNABOUT WAS C R A Z Y. i'm a major gamer, and it can be hard for games or just fiction in general to get a genuine, intense reaction from me, and holy shit this case really threw my emotions all over the place. THAT TWIST??? UP UNTIL THEN I THOUGHT I COULD TRUST ALL THE DEFENDANTS BUT NOPE. kept this case in mind during the entirety of my Trials and Tribulations playthrough. THE TENSENESS OF THE ENDING GOT TO ME SO BAD. I COULD NOT SIT DOWN. I LEGITIMATELY GOT UP AND WRITHED BECAUSE THIS CASE MADE ME FIDGET SO BAD. the uncertainty of Maya's fate as well as whether or not Gumshoe would make it dealed like 20k damage to me. PLUS, FRANZISKA BESTIE HOURS???? SHE WAS LITERALLY SUCH AN ULTIMATE BRO. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. also, will powers made a comeback. i love him.

Bridge to Turnabout was by far my favorite in terms of story. i really enjoyed what it brought to the AA lore in terms of the Feys, and to put it bluntly, i thought it was so completely epic. i figured out during that last trial that Godot killed Misty way before they pieced it together in-game, and it blew my mind. i knew a little bit about Godot before i even got into Ace Attorney, and i was under the pretense that he had actually died and came back to life?? i mean, if the Feys' entire bodies change when they channel a spirit, then i wouldn't put it past Capcom to further add to the supernatural element. but nope! the mans is not a zombie. i had actually strongly disliked Godot up until the end of that last trial, so now i kind of like him. YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT ELSE BLEW MY MIND?? when i realized Maya had been channeling Dahlia the entire time. that WOWED me. one of my top favorite parts of that case was when Pearl channeled Mia and Mia proceeded to ABSOLUTELY DESTROY DAHLIA. when Mia said, "...You will never defeat me. Whether you're alive, dead, or somewhere in between, you will never defeat me. As long as I'm around, you're destined to lose for all of eternity!" I WAS SCREAMING/CHEERING SO LOUD. LIKE, HELL YEAHHHH! SLAY MIA, DESTROY HER! i loved it. LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT TWO OTHER THINGS: the fact that you got to PLAY as MILES, and that they BROUGHT BACK CORNERED!!! you bet i squealed like a schoolgirl when i got to play as edgy. AND CORNERED!!! it took me a few seconds to process that it WAS cornered, and once i realized that the best courtroom song was playing i immediately felt PUMPED!! IT WAS AWESOME! i jammed out to it for a little bit before continuing lmao.

AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING FUN WITH THE OTHER GAMES!! i've been playing the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles lately and i'm loving it so far. i'm not used to the 3D aspect, but i do like how it makes the characters more expressive with their behavior in comparison to the trilogy. i do miss the nice 2D artwork tho :"). i'm only on the second case, but i think Sholmes is hilarious (every time i encounter him in some weird position, or whenever he just pops up outta nowhere i just start wheezing. he's great)!! BUT WHY DID THEY HAVE TO PULL A MIA AND KILL OFF KAZUMA?? i sobbed so hard because kazuma was wonderful. i loved him so much. but that makes me wonder if he's going to continue to be relevant throughout the game, because even after Mia died, she never truly "died", thanks to Pearl and Maya channeling her. from as far as i can tell, Susato isn't Maya's ancestor (if it wasn't obvious from the get-go by the different surnames), so i'm curious to whether or not a Fey will pop up later on. but that's only if Kazuma is still gonna be important :"). ryunosuke is my baby boy and i will brawl god in his honor.

Fun fact: My life's purpose is to turn the subjects I like (like biology) into stories (an episodic narrative about a caspase trying to find meaning in life before they destroy the cell and end it all).

Which one my characters are you? Uquiz (Includes Anuli, Kamari, and two other characters not mentioned.)

Kamari

"The fates promised Kamari a future after all, it would be a shame if fae was too ruined when it arrived."

Kamari spends faer days losing faer morality for the sake of a future where fae can exist without worry. Fae knows this. Fae says fae'll keep farewell intact until the day fae can stop being the High Protector and sing faer melodies in tandem with the birds.

For my trope-loving creatures, Kamari's arc has corruption - fae is the manipulative sort, tragic platonic ships, the aftermath of a ruined friend group, more tragic found family, and the pining to listen to the equivalent of Mitski songs while losing your sanity. (wow so relatable wow.)

As far as Kamari's arc goes... it's currently being rewritten. I know, I know, I never finish anything because I keep rewriting it. But hear me out.... ANGST AND THEME EXPLORATION.

'Yes', I would answer, a hypocrite, a vile thing that didn't deserve the very name of antagonist. How many sunrises, how many sunsets and how many stary nights full of gentle lullabies have I stolen away? All for the sake of something as selfish as my happiness."" (I know, Anuli took a whole paragraph to encapsulate what Kamari could in a sentence, ANuli's like that)

Ah yes, my vessel for self-hatred and nostalgic longing, the overthinking narrator, the character I use to explore feelings I cannot put into words, the houseplant Anuli.

Anuli believes fae's the villain of this story, and as with many villains, their happiness causes the other characters to suffer. To combat this, Anuli spends a lot of time punishing faerself for any joy or excitement fae dares to feel, which happens often. It simply aches too much (in the numb way) to lose the happy ending fae ruined, the love fae once had, the life fae would've had if fae wasn't filled with fatal flaws.

(so fae'll get possessed and attempt to rewrite faerself with.. questionable means instead. Then fae can regain the happy ending fae lost)

For my trope loving creatures, Anuli's plotline is full with wayyy tooo mannyy rhetorical devices, personification, and nature absurdism, all to describe feelings. Fae's an unreliable narrator that thinks so much that the plot happens in the background. Fae ruined faer found family with Kamari. Fae would've been a theater kid if fae were human. Fae also likes the rain and has inattentive adhd. Anuli - the doll - also lost two leaves recently but shhhh, fae'll be fine. (lies)

The point of healing, the reason why one would even try to delay the inevitable, is to ease all discomfort, to savor every moment, to protect it from any disease.

And the worst disease of them all?

Dryad society.

Why is the side character that got too much development the one most connected with the plot/most protagonist-like? Anuli's the protagonist.

Ankh strategizes. Fae plans, formulates and comes up with the wildest ideas that somehow work. Fae also has very little connection with faer feelings, and there is. nothing. wrong. with. that. Others get too pointlessly, needlessly reckless with them. (Fae has a hard time listening to and comforting others. Others think faer cold and heartless, whilst faer actions are all 'trying to keep faer mentally ill and outcast friend group alive.' It ends about as well as you'd expect.)

Otherwise known as Cheng Xiaoshi, his sister, and his queer platonic bf all get traumatized as they break the space time continuum.

What shall I say? The subtle buildup of Cheng Xiaoshi's backstory, the way it gets more and more tragic and nuanced as it parallels with those he possesses? The way he can adapt and strategize for the given situation (despite the fact that everyone sees him as just a silly), how he continues to wait for his parents, how he loves Lu Guang so much he would lose him just to respect his wishes, how his emotional connection with those he possesses overwhelms him and it's. so. tragic.

Lu Guang's adherence to the rules to the point where he's ripping at the seams, how he teases Cheng Xiaoshi even more than Cheng XIaoshi does to him (yes even with his stoic character. He's so silly... also season two), how he has the most queer platonic coded relationship with Cheng Xiaoshi ever?

Qiao Ling and her avoidance of uncomfortable feelings, the way she canonically called Cheng Xiaoshi her brother and is the only one able to connect with Xixi, how she's actually the only levelheaded character here? (Shee'sss sooo prettyyy I lovvee herrr)
