I see a lot of people who are against Lalex, Ruke, and some other ships because they think people just want their favorite white boys to be in a relationship, and I have to say something about it.

You're not wrong. There are plenty of people who ship them for that type of reason and ignore the fleshed out, canon, interracial ships. Those who do that should be called out and deserve your criticism. But if you think that's the only reason people ship those, then frankly, I couldn't disagree with you more.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with shipping things that aren't canon. There's nothing wrong with finding a relationship where canon has moved differently. All the different ships in this fandom should be celebrated and respected because it means people are looking to this show and finding love and care. Why should you care what people ship? If people can look at Luke and Alex and see a friendship that survived starting and ending a romantic relationship, then that's wonderful. If people relate to that story and never get to see representation of happy, friendly exes, I'm so happy for them. If people look at Luke and Reggie and see chemistry, the history of longstanding friendship and having your best friend be the person you fall for, and the lack of stereotype between two boys that are traditionally masculine but in love, then that's amazing.

And so I've seen so many people think if you ship Julie and Flynn, it's because you ship two white boys together and still want to look like you care. Yes, it's true in some cases. That deserves to be called out. But to think that that's always the way it goes? That blows my mind. These two characters are teenage girls of color, living through realistic hardships and ups and downs of friendship, and just regular teenage lives. If girls just like them look at this loving, caring friendship, listen to Flying Solo, and see themselves or something they can relate to and find romantic love in it, then god, I'm proud of them.

Interracial couples deserve so much more love than get, and they deserve so much more representation in the media. Julie and The Phantoms has given us that, and it should be celebrated and loved because it's so, so, so important. Julie/Luke and Alex/Willie are phenomenal, and such a step forward in representative media. But don't assume that just because someone likes another ship means they don't like the ones we're given. If you go through life being angry at those who ship something other than what you do, make assumptions as to why someone ships something, or attack others based on what they ship, that's the most clear path to becoming a toxic, hateful fandom. That should never happen. You don't know the full story about why someone ships something. You don't need to know the full story. It's not your business. If the ship isn't your thing, then it isn't your thing. I'm glad you found a different ship that you love.

And like I said before, sometimes it truly is the case of implicit racism or sexism. And that's not okay, it should never be okay. I get mad at those people, too. It's a discussion and call out that deserves to happen. But I'm begging you, stop making it so that shipping anything but Juke and Willex is wrong. It's not. People find love in different places, ways, and forms. That's good! We should be happy about that because it's making someone else happy!

I think Juke and Willex are the best ships in the show. I love both of them with everything I have, and they're literally some of my favorite ships of all time. But I've also written for Reggie/Luke, Julie/Flynn, and I've shown support for Luke/Alex. Shipping multiple things is okay. Shipping what makes you happy is okay.

Attacking someone or being rude for what they ship is not. And that goes to everyone. It goes to those who get mad at people for shipping Ruke, Lalex, or Julynn, and it goes to people who get mad at people who don't ship those. We could all stand to be a little nicer. Remember that you never know the full story behind someone's actions. If you want to talk about why people ship something, then by all means, talk about it. But make it a conversation and learning experience, not an anger or judgemental fueled attack.

I know people will disagree with me for saying all this, I know people will get mad at me, and I know people will feel the need to respond. This is not a personal attack on anyone, and I'm not trying to call someone specific out. This is just me starting that conversation that we should be willing to have. If you get angry with me, that's cool. Block me or unfollow me. Know that I'm not going to respond to rude messages. If you think I'm wrong, that I missed a point, or that I didn't think something through, that's awesome. Shoot me a message or an ask, I'd love to hear your side of things.

Either way: This fandom is getting a little too toxic, and I'm not just gonna sit here and let it happen.

Ruke- "I didn't want you to find out like this."

Luke isn’t a romantic. It’s not that he doesn’t try! It’s just that... most people don’t see the romance in browsing the music store for 3 hours. This, Luke will never understand. But the thing is, he really really likes Reggie, and he wants to tell him in a way that matters. Which explains why he’s laying on the ground, surrounded with crumpled up paper (covered in scribbles and tossed aside plans of confession) and glaring at the ceiling like it killed his cat (he doesn’t have a cat). 

So yea, this isn’t the ideal time for Reggie to come into the studio. But since when is the universe in favor of Luke Patterson? 

“Sup.” Reggie flops down on the couch, kicking his feet up onto the coffee table. “Why are you being weird?”

“’M dying,” Luke grumbles. 

“Again?” Reggie shifts onto the floor and leans over Luke, laughing at his childish pout. He picks up one of the torn pieces of notebook paper, and lets out an undignified yelp when Luke tackles him to the ground.

“Don’t read that!” Luke shrieks. He clutches the paper to his chest protectively, face flushed bright pink. 

“Why not?” Reggie furrows his eyebrows in confusion. He attempts to grab another paper, but Luke snatches it from him before he can even touch it. “Meanie,” Reggie complains. “Why are you being all...” he waves a hand in from of Luke’s face and raises his eyebrows. “This.”

“Can’t tell you.”

“Why not?”

“It’s a secret.”

“We’ve told each other all our secrets since we were six,” Reggie points out, sounding more hurt than he’d like to. 

Luke sighs. He smooths out the paper, careful to hide the words, and tucks it in his pocket. “I’ll tell you. Just not ye- HEY!”

Reggie holds one of the papers above his head, standing on the coffee table on his tip toes. He laughs triumphantly and Luke watches in horror as he unfolds the paper. He scans it quickly and Luke internally curses Reggie for being the only one capable of deciphering his handwriting. 

“Oh.”

“Yea,” Luke says quietly. “Oh.” He stuffs his hands into his pockets, ducking his head to avoid looking Reggie in the eye. “I- I didn’t want you to find out like this.”

Luke is just about ready to poof out and hide out in Julie’s room for the next 3 days when Reggie seizes him in a tight hug, laughing gleefully. And now... well now Luke doesn’t know what to think. 

Reggie pulls away, still grinning like he just won the lottery. There’s a soft look in his eyes and Luke would definitely die again to keep that expression there. Then he leans in and his face is even closer than when they share a mic and Luke’s jaw is hanging open and his brain is moving in a million different directions. “You-you’re not mad?” He finally gets out. “You don’t hate me?”

Reggie shakes his head vigorously. “Nope!” 

“You mean you-”

“Can I kiss you?”

Luke nods wordlessly. And wow, ok. Maybe it’s a good thing Reggie read the paper.

Why Reggie being bisexual matters so much to me

Ok so I’m just going to rant right now because I really want to talk about this. Also, this is sort of branching off of a reblog of one of @redhoodparker‘s posts.

First off, I believe that it is important to establish that I am bisexual. However, for  many years I tried to convince myself that I wasn’t, but not for the reason you might think. When I was 12 I came out as a lesbian. I didn’t want to admit to myself that I liked guys because I was scared that liking guys made me less queer and that I couldn’t actually like girls if I liked guys too. So I just convinced myself that I didn’t. This worked until about sophomore year of high school. I had just gone through some very traumatic stuff including a suicide attempt and that year I only shared lunch with one of my friends. Every day my friend and I would closer and start talking about more personal topics. One day she was talking to me about our other mutual friend that idenifies as bisexual and how that friend had told her that she liked girls and was attracted to them but she wasn’t sure if she would actually date one and I told my friend that I felt a similar way about guys, even though I would now say I would definitely date a guy. This was the closest I had gotten to even considering liking guys in 3 years and it caused me to think more about my sexuality and all the times I made up excuses for myself when I had a crush on a guy. I slowly began to accept that I liked guys, but there was still a part of me that felt ashamed about it and felt like coming out as bisexual after coming out as lesbian was invalidating queer people and showing that gay people can be “turned straight”. It wasn’t until I was 16 that I was able to move past these feelings enough to come out to my friends, however I still haven’t come out to my family, for frame of reference I am currently 17. Depsite coming out to my friends I still feel guiltly and ashamed for liking guys. Every time I find a guy cute I feel guilty, every time my favorite character is a guy I feel guilty, every time I find a new artist that is a guy I feel guilty. 

As a society we are taught to live in black and whites because it is much easier to simplify people when there are only two options. It’s every thing is put into a simple binary system. Do you like cats or dogs? Do you like hamburgers or hotdogs? Are you a loser or a popular kid? Are you smart or stupid? Yes or no? Are you gay or straight? Are you a boy or a girl? Do you like boys or girls? The keyword in all of those questions is or. We are taught that every option is mutually exclusive, that you can never choose both. Due to this I constantly question my sexual orientation because there is still a part of me that doesn’t fully understand that I can choose both. So I feel ashamed when I like guys because I feel like I’m betraying the part of me that likes girls and especially other queer people. Some queer do see that way too, as a betrayal. When you hear about bisexual dating people of the opposite sex and it is always seen as them being in a “straight” relationship or as them finally picking a side. 

Even within fandom culture saying that a character is bi is usually done as excuse for people to ignore the character’s feelings for the opposite sex and just continue to ship them. I hear the phrase “they could always be bi” a lot and it is almost always said to explain away the character’s behavior towards to opposite sex. The behavior and feelings towards the opposite sex is almost always seen as less than, as being too straight, or unwanted. People will often say that a character is bisexual not because they actually believe them to be or because they want to explore that possibility but because they want the character to queer and they need an excuse as too why the character likes to opposite sex. Now that being said I do not believe that is what is happening with Reggie. 

Reggie is bisexual. I believe that despite it never being explicitly stated it is canon. As it is the most obvious conclusion one can make from watching the show. He dresses and acts in a way that fits in with common stereotypes about bisexual and he has expressed interest in both girls and guys. Many people believe that Reggie is bisexual not just because of a ship or because they want another queer character, though there are people who do, but because he acts like he is bisexual. Reggie’s sexuality exists outside the sphere of shipping, though it a contributing factor. There are people who believe that Reggie is bisexual not because the ship him Luke or Alex but because he just is. It is nice to see a character being viewed as queer for more than just the sake of a ship.

Now that being said I would very much appreciate it if the show not only explicitly said that he was bisexual but also actually explored both sides of his sexuality. I want Reggie to like guys, I want Reggie to talk about guys, I want Reggie to date guys, but I also want him to do all those things with girls. I don’t want the show to just say he’s bisexual and then have him date a guy for the rest of the show because isn’t what bisexuality is. That type of thing is what made me feel ashamed for liking guys because I felt like I should just go date some girl. I love Ruke (Reggie/Luke) as much as the person if not more but I would honestly be really happy if Reggie ended up with no one next season, at least not anyone permanent, or even a girlfriend but they still explore his feelings towards guys. Reggie’s bisexuality is especially important because this is technically a kid’s show. Children are very impressionable and it is important to teach them things when they are young. Therefore, seeing a bisexual character that openly likes both genders, not just boys and not just girls, will hopefully make it so any bi kids watching won’t end up like me and think that they have to choose one or the other. 

I know that Reggie being bisexual is very accepted within this fandom but I also want people to know that this more than just having another queer character in the show. Reggie being bisexual is important to me because he is bisexual, not queer, not gay, bisexual. I hope that seeing a bisexual person openly love both genders will help me finally believe that liking guys isn’t something I should feel guilty about that it is ok and natural and normal that there is nothing wrong with me.

They were sitting in the park, under a tree while the sunlight filtered through and bathed them in a warm glow. Alex was comfortable leaning against Willie, his head on their shoulder while they watched the park-goers going about their daily business.

"Oh!" Willie exclaimed suddenly, scurrying sideways as Alex let out a distressed sound at the lack of contact. Before he could say anything more, his boyfriend had returned, holding a small, delicate yellow flower between his fingertips. Alex vaguely recognized it as a buttercup, but still had no idea what was going on. Willie gave a mischievous smile, leaning in and holding the flower underneath Alex's chin.

"Uh, Willie... what--" Alex started before the other boy shushed him, his eyes sparkling.

"Just waiting to... yes!" Willie tucked the flower behind Alex's ear, then brushed his chin with their thumb. "You like butter." He giggled, settling back beside Alex. "I used to love doing that."

Alex's chin still tingled from Willie's touch, and as he let out a faint "okay," they wrapped their arm around his shoulder, drawing him back in.

Not really a news but let's get something straight.

All of you need to respect the JaTP cast (it goes for all casts/people, but this mainly focuses on issues weve seen in the JaTP fandom) because, believe it or not, they're humans too. Shocker right? They're bound to have some ill timed posts or make jokes with their friends or whatever, but surprise surprise, that doesn't mean that you should go out of your way to try and get them to leave whatever site you're on altogether. (Not so much a Tumblr issue, but a fandom issue nevertheless).

If a cast member says that whatever the fandom is joking about makes them uncomfortable or self conscious or whatever, stop it, that's a shitty thing to do, they shouldn't have to repeat themselves or explain why it's hurting them.

Reaching out to Madison's friends just to try and talk with Madi is a shitty thing to do, and it's unfair to the person you used to try and reach Madi. Remember, Madi is a minor, I'm fairly certain she has her own things to do, she's not entitled to your time.

Sending death threats to cast members for being themselves is never ok, what the fuck are you thinking. On the topic of this, sending harmful threats/doxxing threats to cast members because they dont agree with the same ship as you is disgusting, again what the fuck.

Shipping cast members together is gross and weird, especially if the members being shipped are telling you that it makes them uncomfortable. It's wrong, it can ruin friendships, and shipping real people is once again, a shitty thing to do.

Overstepping into the cast members personal lives is a big issue too!! They don't owe you any information!! Leave them alone!!

Also!! Putting the ghosts more into the spotlight than an actual poc main character is a problem!! Julie is a well rounded character with a show with her name in the spotlight. Yes the guys are technically main characters too, but Julie's the star of the show. Pushing healthy poc characters to the side for your favorite white boys is racist, whether you knew it or not, and before you come into our ask box sending angry anons, I have experience as a black content creator to tell you that it is, in fact, racist! So is only supporting the white ships and saying the poc inclusive ships are toxic in anyway shape or form!! 1. Favorite thing about them

He just supports and encourages EVERYONE. The only time he stops is when someone gets mad about it (specifically people who matter to him, like when Julie shot him looks while he was cheering Carrie on) but literally. Yeah. The only time he gets even close to not boosting those around him in my opinion is when Alex dances and even then I always read it as more humor than anything. I think it comes from his parents never supporting him but I won’t get into that now.

2. Least favorite thing about them

He can be a little emotionally... underdeveloped, to be blunt. He doesn’t know how to comfort Alex or how to address Julie when either are upset or even how to really fix something when it’s wrong. He’s just really positive. And that works for him but it makes him really hard to be around when people with emotional depth or mental illness are struggling. He strikes me as a “just be happy” kind of person and I hope he gets a lot more chances to learn how to get over that. He’s been improving here and there (definitely by the end of the season) but still.

3. Favorite line

I have to pick ONE? Oh god okay um - “I have chemistry with everyone I sing with” it’s iconic and lead sto my single most favorite Ruke scene in the entire show lmao

4. BroTP

Flynn/Luke. They never expand on this duo but I have a lot of hc’s about them from rping and stuff. I miss them tbh.

Honestly, I ship Luke with just about everyone akdjsjd. Maybe like any adults. Ships with Caleb/Luke? I don’t know if that’s a thing. God I hope it’s not.

Okay listen. LISTEN. I have thought so long and so hard about Luke that I got bored and eventually started thinking “but what if he was with _____” like my main rare pair ships are Carrie/Luke and Willie/Luke don’t. Don’t get me started on who I ship this boy with. I Will’s at I do MUCH prefer ships with ghost/ghost and lifer/lifer because the angst in ghost/lifer ships makes me physically ill but I have considers all of the Luke pairings and eventually convinced myself of every single one no I’m not sorry.

Luke is ace. I don’t know I think a lot of people see him as flirty? But I don’t, I think he’s just very friendly and hyper (something I can SUPER relate to lol) and I’ll die on the hill that is ace Luke. I even bounced around the idea of aro Luke once and I also think that would work. Maybe asexual demiromantic specifically. YES I ship him with a lot of people but if he ended up with no one it would be in character and I would love it for him so much.

Can do~! This is for TOS Spones since that’s the one I’m mostly invested in.

when I started shipping it if I did: It’s REALLY weird. I started shipping it fairly early on... but I guess I didn’t fully commit or was in denial because there were multiple times I went ‘...OMG I think I ship them’. I know that by the time I finished the show and especially after watching All Our Yesterdays that I knew I had reached the point of no return. Over two months later and I’m still loving it~

my thoughts: They have such a great, multi-layered dynamic. If you didn’t know them, it’s se easy to think that they hate each other to the point that Bread and Circuses outright asked if they were enemies. The episode not only answere that question (no), but showed just how much they truly care for and understand each other in ways that even they seem surprised by. Spock breaks the rukes to save McCoy’s life, and McCoy effectivly tears down Spock’s denial of emotions like he knew him all his life. It’s like that throughout the entire series. They’re constantly with each other, seek the other out, and are very clealry concerned when the other is in distress. They’ll be bickering the one minute, then ready to ste up for each kther the next. Theres so much to their relationship and it took me by surprise how much there was since all I ever heard about was how amazing Spirk was (I love them too but it’s NOT the only relationship in the show and is majorly neglectful to McCoy’s importance to both lf them) and how McCoy and Spock argued all the time. Lesson here: watch the shlw and don’t listen to only what pop culture likes to remember. Otherwise, you may miss out on something spectacular.

What makes me happy about them: Pretty much what I said above. Honestly, they just feel so... complete to me. They balance each other out really well. They’re both intelligent men who put a hreat deal of care into what they do and they are so much more alike than they may ever want to admit. It feels so different than how they are with Kirk or anyone else. They’re very much equals and wherever they differ, the other fills the missing pieces. They’re like yin and yang, they are opposite, but one cannot exist without the other. They constrast yet compliment each other very well and they push each other in ways that no one else can. It’s just so good~

What makes me sad about them: Eventually, it’s gonna reach a sad end. Either Spock gets sent to AOS and McCkoy is left alone in his old age to wait until he dies, or McCoy dies before then from most likely natural causes and Spock is left alone until sent to AOS, where he’ll die a few short years later. Death happens but either way, they won’t be together in the end. If an afterlife exists in ST, hopefully they’ll be together again then...

things done in fanfic that annoys me: This isn’t just a fanfic thing. It annoys me when people protray McCoy as an unlikeable xenophobe and Spock an innocent angel who did nothing wrong. I get why and how some of McCoy’s jabs can be taken the wrong way to a modern audience that causes them to feel like Spock is being descriminated against. But it’s such a paper thin reading if them both as characters and of their relationship. McCoy can go too far, but he knows his boundaries, recognizes when he goes too far, and does his damnest to care for everyone, including and maybe especially Kirk and of course Spock. Spock was bullied and has faced horrible prejudice, but he himself holds prejudice against humanity and his logical mindset can make him come across as a cold-hearted jerk at times because he’s just not good at expressing himself emotionally. And yes, the two bicker to various extremes and have differing philosophical beliefs. It’s why they’re so essential to Kirk. But they ARE alike in many ways and frequently support and protect the other when it becomes jecessary. I highly doubt that McCoy knocked Spock out to kee him from being tortured in The Empath for no reason. That scene alone should cease any ‘Spock and McCoy hate each other’ arguments. I can’t force people to change their opinions and to an extent I do understand. I’m not even saying ship it, everyone has their own tastes. But I also wish that some would be a bit more willing to look a bit more in depth at the two and their dynamic because there’s so much more than what’s on the surface.

things I look for in fanfic: Eh, nothing in particular. As long as it’s mostly IC and has some nice shippy content as far as Spones fics go, I’m happy~

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Kirk for either of them, or we just go with McSpirk XD

My happily ever after for them: Somehow they get reunited during AOS and remain together until they reapectivly pass. Or they die at the same time and are reunited in the plausible afterlife. But otherwise, I just want them to be happy together flr hkwever long they have. Oh and we pretend that Generations didn’t happen and Kirk is still there as well.

who is the big spoon/little spoon: Switches depending on things, but at least at the start I think McCoy would big spoon until Spock was more okay expressing physical affection like that.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: Vulcan style finger kissing. That counts right?

Me rating jatp ships bc I saw someone else do it and now I want to do it.

juke- it’s the main ship, and I don’t like it that much due to Madi being young and all, but I love the chemistry they have without the sexual physical touch like a kiss would bring

willex- the other main ship, I don’t like willie that much (due to bland personality and barely enough character development reasons but that’s just me) , and they don’t really have much in common, but I respect the lgbt rep and hope to see more scenes of them in the next season. And hopefully we can dive more into Willies life??? We know nothing abt that child-

lalex- probably my favorite ship. I don’t see it as a future thing, it’s a past thing, but I’d love to see a flashback or two explaining their chemistry and why they are so awkward around each other

ruke- I love it in fandom, but I don’t see it happening in canon. i read fanfics about them and watch edits but that’s really it.

jick- I like them better than juke just because they are both teenagers who don’t know how to deal with a crush and it’s really cute. Also they’ve been pining after each other for years.

jarrie- yes I love them so much, they give me such sarah/kiara from obx energy and I can see them being endgame in their late teens (after the events of the whole show)

julynn- love the supportive energy they have much like ruke. Would love to see it happen in canon but a girl can only dream

First of all JATP is my new emotional support show. It’s just amazing. Anyways, I don’t want to jinx anything, but like have you guys noticed there really isn’t any ships wars in the fandom. I know it’s barely a month old, but with how active the fandom is I completely expected something to pop up already. First of all completely transparent: as much as I love Juke, I love Ruke just a little bit more, however Juke is a wonderful ship and I can never hate it. Similarly, the worst thing I’ve heard a hardcore Juke shipper say about Ruke is that they just didn’t see it but were happy that people could see something there. 

I mean this entire fandom heard “Alex and Luke are exes” and went “yep makes sense” and nobody’s really making a fuss about it (That I’ve seen)

In conclusion I will consume any media about any ship in this show. Julie/Luke: beautiful amazing so much chemistry. Reggie/Luke: Jeremy Shada is incapable of playing a character that isn’t bi and I love him for that, also they intimately share a mic so many times. Julie/Flynn: Yes! kill it you funky little lesbians/bisexuals. Carrie/literally anyone: Get your redemption arc Carrie. Julie/Nick: Kind of weird now that he’s possessed but before that, amazing wonderful crushes.
