"There's so much depth and history and lore within Middle-Earth, so we've used exploration to reward players by uncovering all of that lore. Exploration will allow the player to dig deeper into how our story connects with The Hobbit and with the Lord of the Rings, and with the deeper history of Middle-Earth as well." - Michael de Plater (Design Director, Shadow of Mordor)
An interesting thing: I know one of the main artists from Battle For Middle Earth 1 & 2, and apparently they didn't study Tolkien's lore at all for the game. I think that was a poor choice and I'm really glad they did for this game.
I haven't had anytime to play, so at $50 dollars, it's not worth it yet for me, but if any of you have played it, send me a review and I'll post it. I hope to get around to it over winter break or when the price drops.

I had a question, if you don't mind, but I was wondering what Tolkein said about the original defeat of the Ring Wraithes. I was wondering how the Arnoriéns managed to defeat the Witch King originally? It's been a long time since I've read the Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and LoTR
Yeah, no problem!
After the Witch King reappeared in Angmar sometime in the Third Age, he soon waged war on the three splinter kingdoms of Arnor (on behalf of Sauron to counter the might on Gondor).
Fun fact: the king of Angmar got his name, “The Witch King,” during these wars.
The Witch King and his armies were able to defeat two of the splinter kingdoms, but with the help of Rivendell, Arthedain was able to resist the Witch King. However, as Angmar was preparing for a large attack, Arthedain turned to Gondor for aid. Gondor was unable to arrive in time, and Arthedain was overrun.
Better late than never, Gondor eventually arrives and with aid from the Elves of Lindon and the remains of the Dúnedain armies, Gondor marched against the Witch King and forced the army of Angmar to retreat toward Formost while the Witch King fled toward Carn Dûm in Angmar. Glorfindel, Eärnur, and Reinforcements from Rivendell pursue the Witch King and with the appearance of Glorfindel, the Witch King fled into darkness.
To conclude, Glorfindel stops Eärnur from pursuing the Witch King and prophesied, "Do not pursue him! He will not return to these lands. Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man will he fall."
Hope this helped!

As a Nazgûl, the Witch King had a wide arsenal of powers. Besides from the common Black Breath any weapon that struck the Witch-King would be destroyed (a fate shared by Meriadoc Brandybuck's and Éowyn's swords), and its bearer would be poisoned. The Witch-King was also a feared sorcerer, having powers over the physical world, breaking Frodo's sword with just a move of his hand, or weakening the Gates of Minas Tirith allowing the Grond to break them. He was stronger at night time. His power fluctuated over the centuries, with the two peaks of his power being during his campaign against Arnor and in his final battle at Minas Tirith.

Smaug (birth unknown – Third Age 2941) was the greatest fire-breathing dragon of the Third Age. Details of his origin are unknown, but in T.A. 2770 he attacked the Lonely Mountain and the town of Dale. He claimed the treasure of the mountain for himself and forced Thrór, King under the Mountain, and his people into exile. Thorin's quest - with the help of his burglar Bilbo Baggins - to reclaim the treasure ended in success when Smaug was slain by Bard in T.A. 2941.

Engaging the Witch-King in battle, Éowyn killed the Nazgûl's Fell beast. The Witch-king, however, was unaffected by this and attacked Éowyn with his mace. After breaking Éowyn's arm, the Witch King prepared to kill her, but Meriadoc stabbed him in the leg from behind with his Barrow-blade, which was of Westernesse make. Injured, the Witch-king screamed in pain and Éowyn stabbed her sword into his crown and body, thus killing the lord of the Nazgûl and fulfilling the prophecy of Glorfindel.

Boromir was a valiant warrior known in Gondor for his greatness, having already achieved great merit in Gondor prior to the Council of Elrond. He was the eldest son of Denethor II, who was Steward of Gondor during the War of the Ring. Even the people of Rohan admired him.
Boromir disliked the idea of destroying the One Ring, as he believed that it could be used to defeat Sauron once and for all, to save Gondor, and return it to its former glory.
"Why should we not think that the Great Ring has come into our hands to serve us in the very hour of need? Wielding it the Free Lords of the Free may surely defeat the Enemy."
