One of my favorite Classic Who moments is when Ian—who had met Daleks, Sensorites, giant insect creatures, mutant amphibian humanoids and other beasts, and was literally about to run into Mechanoids, robot doppelgangers, Frankenstein's monster, and Dracula—is reading a book called "Monsters from Outer Space" and saying it's far-fetched.

Favorite Doctor Who dynamics: First Doctor & Ian Chesterton

I absolutely love the friendship between the First Doctor and Ian. As one of the first companions, Ian was instrumental to the Doctor's early growth. Their relationship started antagonistic and quickly became almost like father and son. Over time, the Doctor begins to take on some of Ian's (and Barbara's) better traits, such as kindness, compassion, and a willingness to help those in need. Their witty banter and affection for each other felt genuine and apparent that it was translated directly from Hartnell and Russell's chemistry.

Ian: "You know, I don't think I'll ever get used to traveling with you, Doctor. There's always some remarkable new thing to see." Doctor: "The moment when you get used to it is the moment to stop, my dear boy." Ian (narrating): He smiled at me and rested his hand gently on my shoulder in friendship. Ian Chesterton appreciation post

Ian is one of my favorite companions of the Classic Who era, and probably my favorite from the First Doctor era. Often taking the "action guy" role in many stories, he was not only fiercely protective of his companions, but also sought to help others in need. He was physically tough and brave, taking on many of the series' strongest enemies (most likely having some military training in his background), but also showed a fatherly gentleness and warmth towards Susan and Vicki, a close affection with Barbara, and witty banter with the Doctor. I'm so glad that his character is able to get more growth in the Big Finish audio dramas.

The way Ian helps the Doctor up, and then gently lays his hand on the Doctor's hand in comfort when they literally hated each other a few episodes ago. I love them so much.
