Types of AO3 Summary
Option 1 - The Excerpt:
The quickest, the easiest! Find a section of your fic that contains the main premise of said fic and also showcases your writing. Copy paste that into the summary box. BOOM! Done.
Best used for any fic, unless it's so short the excerpt would be the whole fic.
Option 2 - The No Frills:
Just a description of the fic. No need for drama. No need to complicate matters. Keep it simple, keep it safe.
Example: "A short character exploration of Blorbo's thoughts after Daisy leaves."
Best used for short fics, poems and fics where the style/format is more important than the plot. Or fics that tie directly into a scene/episode from canon or another fanfic.
Option 3 - The Hook:
Draw the reader's interest by giving them a set up with no conclusion. Introduce the main character(s), introduce the status quo, describe an inciting incident, leave a question in the reader's mind.
Example: "Blorbo is a barista at a coffee shop, struggling to pay their bills, but after handsome rockstar Obrolb walks into their coffee shop they find that they have to decide whether a chance at love is worth the cost of fame."
Best used for mid to long fic where there's a strong premise and follow through. Especially good for AUs. Can be expanded for more complex plots or used multiple times in one summary for multiple characters or subplots.
Option 4 - The Sitcom One-Liner:
"The one in which [over simplified description of one of the main plotlines]" This is essentially 'boil your plot down to the very simplest statement you can, oversimplify if possible. The more bizarre or unhelpful the better.
Example: "The one in which Blorbo learns to like cake".
Best used for fics with at least a little humour in them.
Option 5 - The Rule of Three:
Three is a magic number. Find three key moments in your fic and just list them. That's it. Often ends with 'not necessarily in that order' if used for comic effect. If it's an AU, establish that quickly (i.e. 'Star NHL player Blorbo…').
Example: "Blorbo makes a friend, falls in love, and almost burns to death, not necessarily in that order."
Best used for anything, really. Three is a magic number. The human brain loves things that come in threes.
Option 6 - The Trope Lure:
Why bother describing the plot? We all know AO3 readers are here for the tropes. Similar to The Sitcom One-Liner just using tropes instead of plot. Often followed by the phrase 'that nobody asked for'.
Example: "The Space western/ABO/Mail Order Bride fic that nobody asked for."
Often tacked on to the end of The Hook or The Excerpt as a tl;dr.
Best used for fic that plays its tropes straight with no shame or second guessing.
Option 7 - The Pre-emptive Strike:
(Not recommended) You just wrote this fic, the self doubt is consuming you. You feel the need to apologise profusely for your existence for no apparently reason. You feel cringe, you think the fic is cringe, you want everyone to know that you think the fic is cringe in case they don't like it and judge you for it.
Example: "So I fell in love with this pairing and had to write this. It's weird and terrible. Lol! I suck at summaries! Sorry!"
Best used for no fics ever. I cannot stress this enough.
(Seriously, I am begging you, don't do this. If you're planning to use this option, rethink it and do one of the others. I guarantee you more people will want to read your fic.)
Sometimes added on to any other summary as a strange disclaimer. (srsly. don't.)
Option 8 - The Unapology:
Embrace the mayhem, embrace the deep dark depths of your soul. The opposite of The Pre-emptive Strike. A combination of The No Frills and The Trope Lure that truly gives no fucks.
You have committed crimes and you are proud of them. You know what your USP is and you're going to make sure your target market finds you. Look upon my works, ye readers, and despair!
Example: "There aren't enough tentacle fics in this pairing, so I had to write one myself!"
Best used for fics with controversial/polarising tropes with all relevant details already clearly stated in the tags.
Option 9 - The Interrogation:
What if you wrote a summary entirely in questions? What if your readers had to read the fic to discover the answers? Who knows what will happen if you do this?
Example: "What happens when Blorbo McBlorbo gets his wish and Daisy doesn't make it to the plane on time? What happens when Obrolb finds out? How will this change Daisy and Blorbo's friendship?"
Best used for... I honestly don't know. This style of summary does not vibe with me. Mystery fic maybe? Sorry guys.
Option 10 - The Multipack:
Got a bunch of shorter fics in one work? No way of summarising them all without a wall of text larger than the Great Wall of China? This one is similar to The No Frills in that you're not describing the plots themselves and similar to The Trope Lure in that often broader genres and tropes are mentioned. What links those fics? Are they all in the same fandom? The same pairing? The same challenge? Just slap that right in the summary. A chapter list with 1-2 word trope/pairing summaries can be included or not.
Example: "A collection of Blorbo/Daisy/Obrolb fics based on Tumblr prompts. Chapter 1: Regency AU Chapter 2: Werewolves vs vampires Chapter 3: Ghost!Daisy Chapter 4: Space pirates!"
Best used for (obviously) works that are compilations of fic.
Option ? - The Void:
I said The Excerpt was the quickest and easiest summary to do. I lied, well... I didn't exactly lie. What is quicker and easier than not having a summary at all? After all, that's what the tags are for.
Example:
Best used for... nothing? Write a summary, guys. Please?

Dive deep into new fantasies with this Swamp Monster dildo from Creature Cocks! Its mysterious shaft is textured with tiny bumps and scaly ridges. The long shaft has a gentle curve to it for your penetrative pleasure and a soft pink head that blossoms like a bud at the end of a green stem. At the base is a wide, flat plateau that you can ride and two, shiny, black glass orbs that seem to stare up into your depths as you ride it! Is it face or phallus? That's up to you to decide as you enjoy the sweet and silky smoothness of premium silicone as you plunge it deeper into your own wet and mossy swamplands. Completely phthalate-free, it is body-safe to use with water-based lubricants. The base is also compatible with a strapon harness for those of you who want to share in the fantasy and get pegged! Or ride solo; the strong, suction cup base lets you enjoy it hands-free! After play is over, wash the dildo with warm water and soap and use a toy cleaner to spray clean. Wipe dry and store in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight.
On a hot and balmy day, you've decided to explore more on this surprise vacation to the Everglades. Fanning yourself, the heat is as heavy as a blanket and you seek some shade in the late afternoon. For miles the winding, wet swamplands stretch out and you sit at the edge of it on the moist earth under a tree. The sun hangs low in the sky, yet it's still warm, so you strip down and wade into the water. The cool water freshens and cools you. You feel so relaxed you lose track of time. Suddenly there's a moment in the water and as you look around, you see the two glassy, black eyes of something watching you. Your breath catches in your throat, fight or flight activated, yet you stay perfectly still. As you finally turn to start moving out of the water, a scaly, wet hand grabs your thigh. You freeze, terrified, but your terror turns to confusion and arousal as the hand begins to slide up between your thighs and stimulate you! As you look down, you see the pink tipped, scaly, green rod begin to emerge from the water. It surfaces, twitching, firm and excited; two glassy black eyes look up at you and the hands pull you down over the shaft. It parts you and you find yourself being moved up and down and it feels so good that it surprises you. Your moans are barely heard over the wild waters, and you begin to feel hot for an entirely different reason! As you reach climax, the monster releases you, thick, white slime trailing between your thighs. You walk out of the water and to the shore again, only the Everglades knowing your mysterious secret.
This link is really not safe for any workspace, so please mind that when clicking. Because it's a product page for a monster dildo with terrible soul-stealing eyes in place of the balls. I am not joking.
I found this and almost laughed myself sick. The head-on images of it make it look like those closeup photos of Borzois and other long nose-dogs!!!!!! The whole concept of this design is sending me into the stratosphere and not from orgasmic bliss. The terrible photoshopped images of it in a harness that make no sense--why did they bother??? There's just so many layers to the absolute masterpiece that is this product page.
EDIT: oh my god there's an even worse/better one

20 Questions for Writers
@noxnthea tagged me so here we are.
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 18
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
555,722 more than I expected. It's gonna get higher!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Almost exclusively Marvel, but I have two Sons of Anarchy fics that I brought over from my FanFiction.net account way back when and there's more over there.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Order of Operations (Darcy/Bucky; E), biologically, but not conceptually (Darcy/Bucky; T), Trust in Motion (Darcy/Bucky; M), Lessons in Avoidance: Or How Darcy Lewis Learned to Have Feelings (Darcy/Clint; E), a haunting (Darcy/Bucky; T)
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try to reply to all of them. Talking to readers in the comments of one of my absolute favorite things about posting fics.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
An Unsealed Fate (E)
Is an AU one shot Bucky/Clint/Nat based the night before a battle in a world inspired by the show Carnival Row. All the characters are having this bittersweet moment of expressing their love for each other and not saying goodbye as they prepare to fight for freedom at dawn the next day.
“We don’t say goodbye before we part,” Clint continues as his fingers finish the last button and he starts to tug Bucky’s trousers and pants over his hips, “we don’t seal a fate until all other paths are closed to us.”
“He’s right,” Nat says and when Bucky turns his head again she’s so close he can make out the gold stars around her irises, the only outward sign of the immense power hiding under her skin, “don’t tempt fate. What will come will come but we have now and we’re going to celebrate it with you.”
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Almost everything tends to have happy endings in one way or another! I write fic as an escape so even though I like to let some angst in I like to wrap it up with a happy ending.
That said, the most stereotypical happy ending I have is probably, It's Quite Inconvenient. This is a Darcy/Bucky Regency AU comedy of errors, and it ends on a very happy note!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not usually, fingers crossed it doesn't start! I love my fandom community like crazy!!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yep. The kind I want to read.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I don't know that I've written any crossovers but I've written a number of AUs.
11. Are any of your fics converted into podfics?
No, but I'd be excited about it if they were.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not technically, but I work so closely with @noxnthea on so many of my fics they might as well be co-written - or at least co-loved/co-plotted/co-agonizedover. The running joke is she's the fairy god-mother (and superstar beta) to everything I put out. I don't think any of it would make it public without her!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I don't know that I could pick.
I love writing Darcy/Bucky.
I'll read almost anything though - I write almost exclusively Marvel but my reading tastes extend well beyond the Marvel fandom.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Too many to talk about.
The one I really think won't ever get finished though is a daemon AU that's got about 50k words and is Clint Barton centric. I love it so much but it just never fell into a strong final plot unfortunately. It's also in present tense, which I don't write anymore so it would be SO hard to pick back up - BUT, god, when I go back and reread it sometimes do I just love it so much.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm pretty good at action sequences, banter, and pacing?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I am really trying to work on getting better at complex plot development and suspense. I also want to get better building a more complex vocabulary to improve my diction.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I do this. I don't mind when others do it.
I think it's best when done sparingly and with a sensitivity to the fact that you don't speak the language. I prefer when it's done in a way that the dialouge is not important to the scene. Or if it is, I think it's really cool when the translation is provided contextually rather than in notes later on. That said, I've seen it done really well both ways!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Tamora Pierce - on an account that doesn't exist anymore. I have been in fanfic for A LONG time. Like, the first fanfic I ever read was printed out and handed to me in the hallway of my middle school when the internet still made screeching noises as it connected.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh, um - I think I've answered this before, but I'd probably have to say: Order of Operations - I am in love with this universe and still writing sequels and follow ups. I think it just came to me during a really difficult time, which is still in progress, and it's become a comfort to just sink into it and share with the community.
It's been so much fun!
tagging -- anyone who sees this and wants to do it!

An AU of an AU. Alternate Orders
She’d expected to be dealing with a version of Bucky with three years of life as a prisoner of war under his belt, but this version seemed to think the Howling Commandos were going to come barreling through the door any moment. “What year is it?” Darcy asked slowly, a suspicion starting to form. “What the hell kind of question is that?” Bucky asked. “Worst interrogation I’ve ever been a part of.” “Humor me, soldier,” Darcy said. “1945.” “Shit,” Darcy muttered. “The power surge—” The team doesn’t arrive on time, and Darcy and Bucky go through with the wipe, using the chair to remove all the Hydra programming and Bucky’s memories, but an unexpected power surge mid-process throws a wrench in their plans. Now they’re still on the run, this time with a whole new set of complications.
Picks up immediately following chapter 21 of Order of Operations
Rated: E mind the tags
First 3 chapters are up.
