i'm moving out soon, leaving this flat behind, saying goodbye to paris. that gives me a sense of relief: life here has been a struggle, to say the least. i'm returning to a city i know and love, until April 2024 at least (when my internship ends). my boyfriend is staying in paris, so we'll be long-distance. i'm not sure what to expect and i'm worried i might not have made the right choices but hopefully those doubts will subside soon enough.

wish my best friend and I lived in the same city, or even in the same country, just so we could catch up over coffee more often than twice a year :(

hi!! im considering going into translation and i was wondering if i could ask you some questions about job prospects. do you think this is a financially secure field? im kind of interested in book translation but it seems to be harder to break into and make a livable wage. what other types of jobs could someone get within the translation field? i love languages but im completely lost on how to make a career out of it and i dont know anyone in the field to ask. sorry to bother you and thank you!
Hi! I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to your questions. :(
Not sure I'm the best person to answer, given that I haven't graduated yet (I did an internship last summer and may be about to start another one, but that's pretty much it). I’d say that translation can be a financially secure field, but it depends on SO many factors: your location and language combination, status (in-house translator, freelance work, a mix of both), your specialization(s), etc. From what I've seen, the majority of translators in France work freelance. The pay and career prospects tend to be better in the long term.
I’m super interested in book/literary translation too, but I do think it’s easier to approach once you’ve established yourself on the market.
Being curious is fundamental. Even if you’ve specialized in a particular field, you’re bound to engage in all kinds of unpredictable research. My economics translation teacher does freelance work, including for financial newspapers. She regularly takes on offers to translate non-fiction or self-help finance books. Another teacher does both legal translations and video game localization. My internship last summer mainly involved translating scientific papers and press releases on refrigeration technologies and climate change. I may be starting another internship in a few weeks, during which I'll primarily be translating HR documents. My point is that there are plenty of opportunities outside of literary translation (some more exciting than others). I’m always surprised to see all the different kinds of companies and institutions hiring translators and language specialists when I browse job offers on LinkedIn.
Besides, if you get a degree in translation, you're not just learning how to translate, you're gaining all sorts of skills: writing in general, revising, post-editing, subtitling, etc.

What's the hardest part of being a student according to you?
everything that's not purely studying haha... for me, being a student and going to school, burrying myself in books and learning new things is a relief, a comfort. it's always been my escape from whatever was going on in my life. as a child, i could turn to my homework and pretend i didn't hear my parents arguing with their families on the phone. as a teenager, i would study an awful amount so that I wouldn't have to face the fact that I was very lonely and isolated. i started uni literally 2 months after my dad passed away and let me tell you, i've never studied so hard in my life. i just wanted to forget about my grief, pretend i was like every other person my age. school is hard, but it feels so easy compared to everything else. i wish I could stay a student for a little longer, but it's not realistic financially. i'm a young adult now with only a few months to go before the end of my masters and it's pretty scary to me.

Hey, how are you? did you get the internship?
Hi! I did get the internship, thank you for asking!! It started at the beginning of July and will end at the end of September. The work I'm entrusted with is manageable and I'm learning a lot. The only (big) downside is that my social anxiety has gotten worse in recent months. This is making this period especially challenging for me, as I am nervous about going to the office each day, having to interact with colleagues and wondering how they view my work, despite them having already told me they're pleased with it. It really makes me consider what kind of environment I see myself working in later, but also the things I personally need to work on...
