A part of him always knew he’d end up back here somehow. Bucky looked at the steel doors of the bunker, each door marked with a black star. Opening these doors meant opening the doors to the demons of his past. He placed a hand on one of the handles. It was time he buried who he used to be, along with those who made him that way. He yanked the door open and stepped inside, taking one last glance behind him before letting it close.
“He’s gone.”
“You’re telling me he just got out of bed and walked out?” Sam asked with disbelief.
“That kid is hiding something. That girl is more to him than he’s admitting.” Logan added.
“What like they were hookin’ up in between assassinations?”
“I know devotion when I see it, alright. And that kid just about died because of her but he’s going after her anyway.” Logan argued. Sam shook his head, then looked to Steve.
“Any idea where he might be going?” He asked.
“She’s leading him back to Hydra, back to where they were kept.” Steve answered.
“And where is that?”
“Siberia.”
The base had fallen into some disarray since Bucky had defected. But it was still very much alive. In the distance he could hear the faint sound of music, he followed it into the center chamber. The room where he had been wiped and reprogramed so many times over.
“Ah, the prodigal son has returned.” A voice crackled through a speaker. Bucky looked to see if he could glimpse the person behind the disembodied voice but saw nothing.
“We have waited oh so long for this moment.” The voice continued.
“Who are you?” Bucky asked.
“I was the one who cleaned up the mess you left behind. I saved us from extinction.” The voice answered.
“What are you talking about?” Bucky wondered.
“Perhaps, it is easier for me to simply show you.”
A computer screen nearby Bucky flickered on. Images of various men in lab coats setting up a multitude of syringes, a woman strapped to a table. Anna.
“My greatest accomplishment, an experiment turned prodigy. Creating a mutant in a lab.” The voice explained as Bucky watched the men stick the needles into Anna’s arms.
“Our lovely Liho has been serving quite nicely in your place. I know you two had made plans to run away together some day, that is why she was the perfect specimen for this experiment.”
Bucky’s blood ran cold.
“You abandoned her. You didn’t come back for her and Hydra knew the sure way to get their asset back was to sacrifice his greatest weakness. No matter how many times your minds were rewritten, you went back to each other. How romantic.”
A door opened, and there stood Anna. Bucky blinked as if he was in some sort of dream state.
“And now the final battle begins.” The voice laughed, “Liho has been programmed to kill, she will not stop until you are dead.”
Anna slowly started her approach,
“Anna.” Bucky called, his first instinct was to reason with her. See if he could pull her out of the control they had. She kept walking forward.
“Anna please, don’t.”
“Please, don’t.” She mocked.
“You’re in there somewhere, Anna. Just like I was, you can fight it.” Bucky stepped back as she kept stepping forward.
“I have never been more alive, James. You left me and I was given a new life.” Anna smiled. Bucky was backed up against a wall,
“I am stronger than I was when I knew you. No longer the weakling that thought she loved you. Who could love a beast like you?” Anna spat and the poison in her words hit their mark.
“Anna, don’t make me do this.” His whispered, as she was mere feet away. With a smirk she launched herself at him, her moves were fast but he managed to block most of them. She landed a few hits to his face and another few to his abdomen. Bucky spat blood from his mouth,
“I won’t hurt you, Anna.”
“Oh please.” She groaned, kicking him in the chest. A force that sent him flying into machinery. He struggled but still pulled himself back up,
“I won’t.” He coughed.
“Bucky!” Steve’s voice echoed through the chamber. Steve had arrived with Sam and Logan in tow. Anna looked to them then back to Bucky,
“Enough.”
She lifted her arms and the building began to shake, scraps of metal started flying around the chamber. Steve, Sam and Logan found themselves pinned high against the wall with piping and cement Anna had controlled.
“Anna!” Bucky shouted, as his friends groaned in pain from the tightening binds. She smiled at him and increased the chaos around them. The mystery scientist, now scared of his own creation began to flee the building. Sensing this, Anna hurtled a metal spike through his back.
“Anna, stop this!” Bucky yelled, trying to step towards her. Avoiding the debris the best he could. A piece of metal sliced through his cheek but he still marched forward. Continuing till he was before her, face to face.
“Anna, you have to stop.” He pleaded. She smirked,
“No.” The debris spun faster, Steve and the others were moaning in pain. Bucky pressed on,
“Anna.” He whimpered, his left arm reaching for the knife in his pocket. With his other he reached up to caress her, despite what happened the last time they touched. His fingers on her skin, Anna felt a shockwave course through her body. Images, memories, pain all collided into her at once. With her own eyes, she looked to Bucky,
“Kill me.” She whispered, the debris was still spinning and flying around the chamber.
“Anna.” Bucky shook his head with a sob.
“Please, James.” A tear began to fall down her cheek.
“I love you.” He said, taking the knife from his pocket and thrusting it into her chest. Anna’s body relaxed and the debris fell to the ground. Bucky caught her in his arms and held her close. Her face was calm, at peace. It was over.
After years of torture and pain, it was over. Bucky carried her from the chamber and from there he would take her home. Someplace warm. Someplace far from here.

Logan had fallen asleep in the living room. The fire place was crackling gently. Bucky had been staring into the flames, hypnotized. He let his mind wander, memories started to trickle in. Since he had been deprogramed for so long, his brain was putting together the missing pieces. The memories weren’t clear and complete but he was able to remember important details. The faces of those he had killed on Hydra’s command. He wanted to face his past, he wanted to help Anna.
He stood up and made for the stairs. If she was asleep he wouldn’t disturb her but if she were anything like him, sleep didn’t come easy. Gently, he cracked the door to the master bedroom open. Anna was sitting on the edge of the mattress, her head in her hands. Softly, Bucky tapped on the door to reveal his presence. She didn’t respond, so he opened the door wider.
“Anna?” He called in a soft whisper. She didn’t move. Icy fear flooded Bucky’s veins as he began a slow approach to her. His flesh hand extended before him to place on her shoulder,
“Anna, are you alright?” He asked, his hand was nearly touching her when she grabbed his wrist tightly.
“Anna!” He winced as her grip grew even stronger.
“You weren’t there.” She said. Bucky’s brows furrowed in confusion as he tried to pull his wrist from her grasp. He didn’t want to risk hurting her if he used his other hand.
“What?” He asked, still struggling. Anna stood up and faced him, her eyes were dark. Empty.
“You don’t know what it was like.” She growled, “Now see what you did to me.”
She placed her other hand on his chest, her once brown eyes turned bright blue. Bucky felt the life being pulled from his veins, the very air in his lungs evaporated as he gasped for oxygen. He dropped to his knees, looking up at her as she siphoned his very soul away from him.
“Drop him!” Logan yelled as he tackled Anna against the wall. With her grip on Bucky removed, he collapsed on the bedroom floor. Anna laughed as Logan tried to hold her,
“Snap out of it, whatever hold they have on you!” He commanded,
“I am death, I cannot be held.” Anna smirked, with a touch she shoved Logan off her, launching him across the room. She kneeled down beside Bucky’s unconscious body,
“You know where to find me, моя любовь.” She whispered into his ear, before walking out of the room.
When Bucky came to he was in what looked to him like a hospital bed, the beeping of the monitor along with the buzzing of the florescent lights above him. To his left sat Steve, with his head down. When he noticed Bucky was awake he jumped to his feet,
“Are you alright, Buck?” Steve asked. Bucky groaned as he stretched his aching body.
“Never better.” He quipped, his throat was dry making his voice hoarse.
“Thought we lost ya, kid.”
Bucky turned to his right to see Logan leaning against the window. Seeing Bucky’s bewildered expression Logan continued,
“She almost killed you. Sucked nearly every drop of your life from you, if I hadn’t shown up when I did we’d be in a very different situation.”
“The super soldier serum bought you some time.” Steve added. Bucky blinked in astonishment.
“Did she say anything to you?” Steve questioned, “Anything at all.”
Bucky thought for a moment, she had said something to him. Something that cut him deep, deeper than he was willing to admit right now. But there was something else, something after she had let him go.
“She said I’d know where to find her.”
Steve and Logan looked at each other.
“Sounds like a trap.” Logan commented,
“Definitely.” Steve agreed. “Whoever is controlling her wants to get you alone.”
“I have to go after her.” Bucky stated.
“I don’t think you’re in the right state for that.” Steve warned.
“I have to go, Steve. It has to be me, I am the only one that can bring her back.” Bucky insisted.
“What if she’s the kind you can’t bring back?” Logan proposed, crossing his arms over his chest. Bucky paused.
“Can you do what might need to be done?” Logan asked. Bucky looked at him with fervor in his eyes,
“I can bring her back.” He stated. Steve let out a sigh,
“Alright, as soon as you’re better we’ll go after her.”
Bucky nodded and rested his head back against the pillow. The next few days of rest, his dreams were filled with memories and the words Anna has scarred on him.
 “You weren’t there”
“See what you did to me”

SIBERIA 1994
Night had fallen. Bucky sat in his cell awaiting the release of sleep that would never come. When he heard the sound of footsteps. He expected it to be one of the superior officers doing their rounds, but instead a soft voice called his name.
“James.” She whispered, pressing her face against the bars of his cell. He looked at her and stood up immediately.
“What are you doing out of your cell? You’ll be killed.” He warned, standing before her. She smiled up at him,
“If I am to die, than it will be because of my love for you. I don’t care if they find me.” She reached through the bars to caress his cheek. Bucky leaned into the warmth of her palm,
“Anna.” He sighed in resignation. “They’ll punish us both if they find out. I don’t want you hurt.” He placed his flesh hand on top of hers, still holding his face in her hand.
“моя любовь, I am not afraid of death. Only losing you would be true pain.”
“I love you, Anna.” The words left his lips before he even realized the gravity of them. But there was truth behind every letter. She smiled and pulled his face closer to hers, a delicate kiss between iron bars.
“Someday, we will see the sun together.”

Bucky awoke with an ache in his chest. He had abandoned someone he loved, someone who loved him. He wasn’t about to do it again. Under cover of night, he left for Siberia.

Logan drove out into what seemed to be like an endless expanse of wilderness. Until they arrived at a large clearing covered in snow.
“What is this place?” Bucky inquired.
“Alkali Lake.” Logan responded, parking the truck.
“I thought you were taking us somewhere safe.” Bucky protested, he could see nothing but endless snow and woods surrounding what looked like an abandoned dam. Logan opened the backseat of the truck to retrieve the woman, her hands and feet were bound with rope.
“Trust me, kid. This place is where you want to keep someone like her.” Logan assured, making his way to the dam. Bucky quickly unbuckled his seat and followed, his metal arm clicking as he shoved his hands in the pockets of his jacket.
Inside, the place smelled of wet concrete. Bucky followed as Logan carried the woman down various hallways until he arrived at what looked like an exam room. In the center was some sort of tank with wires and tubes attached to it, Logan laid the woman on the metal table above it.
“What is this place?” Bucky asked, looking around at the various abandoned machines and the viewing room above their heads. It seemed oddly familiar.
“This.” Logan grunted as he untied the woman’s hands and feet and reached for the leather straps that were hooked to the metal table.
“Is where I was made.” He finished, starting to strap the woman down to the table.
“What are you doing?” Bucky asked, not able to hide the concern in his voice.
“I am keeping her in one place, if she wakes up in a frenzy who knows what she’ll do.” Logan explained, continuing his work until every strap was secure. Bucky walked up to stand on the opposite side of the table.
“You’ve dealt with many people like her?” Bucky asked, he hadn’t realized how talkative he had been but he couldn’t quell the curiosity. This was the most he had spoken since the apartment. Maybe there was something about Logan that made him feel like he could.
“I knew someone like her once.” Logan responded stepping back, his eyes dropping to his feet.
“What happened to her?” Bucky wondered. Logan looked up at him,
“She died. Saving the ones she loved.”
“I’m sorry.” Bucky apologized, Logan shook his head. “Don’t be, kid.”
“What’s your story anyway, why is this chick after you?” Logan asked. Bucky looked away, at something in the distance.
“It’s complicated.” He said.
“This isn’t some bad break up. Why is she trying to kill you?” Logan persisted. Bucky sighed, his brows furrowed.
“The organization she works for, Hydra, the one I used to work for. I defected and they’re trying to get me back.”
Logan nodded, processing Bucky’s answer.
“So, who is she?”
“What?” Bucky asked, startled by Logan’s blunt question.
“You said you knew her. Who is she?” He asked again. Bucky looked at the woman, her face illuminated by the greenish lighting of the room. It was still, peaceful.
“She’s like me. Or she was. Programed to kill anyone Hydra wanted removed.”
“You’re an assassin?”
“Was.  I don’t do that anymore.” Bucky corrected.
“What do you mean by programmed?” Logan continued to question. Who knows how much time they had before she would gain consciousness
“They would wipe our memories, leaving only what they needed us to know in place. Stripping us of our identity, our humanity.” Bucky’s eye twitched as he spoke. How much he had lost because of them. All the horrible things he had done. Logan nodded in understanding,
“I can understand not knowing who you are. What you are. What you’ve done.” He traced his knuckles, where the claws had appeared. There was an unspoken kinship brewing between the two. Something Steve couldn’t understand, even if he tried.
“What about that arm?” Logan gestured to Bucky’s right arm that he still had covered. Bucky looked at Logan confused, how could he have known?
“I can smell the metal, you’ve got one hell of a piece of machinery.” Logan smirked. Bucky took off his glove revealing his metal hand. He stretched his fingers and curled his fist.
“This was a gift from Hydra when they found me. A vibranium arm to replace the one I lost in the war.” Bucky explained.  Logan shook his head.
“I know what that’s like.” His claws appeared with a sharp snap, bright metal sprouting from flesh.
“You said you were made here, is that what you mean?” Bucky asked, as Logan’s claws retracted. He nodded,
“Right in this room, they pumped me full of adamantium. Every bone in my body.”
“God.” Bucky huffed,
“There’s no God for the likes of you and me, kid. I can promise you that.” Logan stated, his words filled with hatred. He had been made like Bucky had been made. Different yet the same.
The woman groaned, interrupting the moment of camaraderie between the men. They jumped to attention, preparing themselves for her next move. Tossing her head side to side, she continued to moan as if she were caught in a nightmare. Her fingers stretched at her sides as if she were reaching for something. The machinery around them began to groan and twitch to life, she was exerting power without knowing.
“Do you know her name?” Logan asked.
“What? I-uh.” Bucky stumbled, shutting his eyes tightly as he tried to remember. Did he know her name? Did they ever speak to each other? Yes. Yes they did, he could see it in his minds eye. Flashes of memory, of skin.
“Speak up, kid!” Logan demanded as the woman’s movement became more erratic and the concrete walls themselves seemed to tremble.
“It’s Anna.” He muttered.
“What?” Logan yelped, as the woman’s eyes began to flutter. Her expression hardening and softening like she was trying to pull herself out of a trance.
“Anastasia, her name is Anastasia.” Bucky blurted out as the woman’s eyes flew open. Her eyes darted in all directions, taking in her surroundings and the faces of the two men hovering over her. They were blurry, distorted blobs as she adjusted to the light. Her chest was heaving as she tried to regulate her breathing. The straps holding her down restrained her movement, adding to her panic. Her lips began moving but they could barely make out what she was saying. Bucky leaned in closer.
“4/19/18. 4/19/18. 4/19/18.” She kept repeating.
“What’s she saying?” Logan asked. Her eyes looked to Logan, his face coming into focus. A face she didn’t recognize. Logan could smell her fear, his hand hovered over hers. Debating on if a touch would send her into further alarm, he placed it on the table to hold it steady.
“I’m not sure, 4/19/18. I don’t know what that means.”
At the sound of his voice, the woman’s gaze fixed on Bucky. As his image came into focus, his blue eyes wide. His long brown hair falling to frame his face as he leaned over her. The machines calmed, the walls stopped groaning. Her lip trembled slightly as she opened her mouth,
“J-James.” She croaked. Bucky felt a twinge in his chest at the sound of his name. A name he hadn’t heard used in a long time. A long, long time. He looked up at Logan who cocked an eyebrow.
“Anna, d-do you remember me?” Bucky asked, similar to what Steve had asked him once but with more trepidation.
“James.” She repeated. Her breathing began to regulate and slow as she began to relax. The look in her eyes, a reflection of his own face. A face he had seen in the mirror so many times. Scared, alone, unsure of who he was. His flesh hand moved to hold hers but hesitated as she began to fall unconscious again.
“Anna?” He called gently, no response.
“What now?” Bucky asked Logan.
He stood back and crossed his arms, “She remembered you, that’s a good sign.”
“When she wakes up again we’ll try to get more out of her.” He added. Bucky looked down at her,
“Is there somewhere else we can go?”
Logan let out a heavy sigh,
“I gotta place nearby, but I’m going to make some calls first. Just in case.”
Bucky nodded and Logan left the room.
“Anna, if you can hear me, you’re safe now.” He whispered, his flesh hand still hesitating to touch her. Instead, he flexed his fingers and dropped his arm back to his side.
——————
Later that evening, Logan and Bucky arrived at Logan’s cabin in the mountains. Logan said he liked having a place out where no one could find him or even bother trying to. Bucky agreed with that sentiment. Having a place to go when you wanted to hide from the world. Maybe one day he would have one of his own. Anna had awakened on the drive over. She didn’t speak much after Bucky tried to explain where they were going. He didn’t bother explaining everything that has led up to this point. Not yet.
Logan’s cabin was spacious and cozy. The fridge was stocked with plenty of beer and meat, exactly what one would expect a man like Logan to have. There was a package on the doorstep when they arrived,
“The favor I called for.” Logan smirked as he picked up the parcel.
“What is it?” Bucky asked.
“Let’s call it security.” Logan answered, and it was left at that.
Anna, who Bucky had draped a spare blanket over during the ride, stood in the center of the cabin looking up at the high ceiling. Clutching the thick blanket around her tightly. Bucky watched from afar, unsure if he should approach or let her move first.
“You keep standing there like that, kid, you’re not gonna get anywhere.” Logan commented as he opened the fridge and grabbed himself a beer.
“I don’t want to overwhelm her.” Bucky said, his hands curling into fists. Logan popped the cap of the beer bottle,
“She’s already overwhelmed, bub. You might be the only one who can make sense of her situation.” He took a large swig from the bottle. Bucky sighed, Logan was right. Facing Anna also meant facing his own past and that is what scared him.
“Is there somewhere I can freshen up?” Anna’s question brought Bucky out of his thoughts.
“There’s a shower upstairs down the hall to your right.” Logan replied. Anna nodded, taking a quick glance at Bucky before she made her way to the stairs.
When she reached the bathroom, she shrugged off the thick blanket, letting it drop to the floor by her feet. She turned on the faucet in the shower, letting the room fill up with steam as she slowly began to unzip and take off the tight black catsuit. When she was free of the fabric, she stood before the mirror as it began to fog. She took her hand and wiped the condensation away, revealing her face staring back at her. A face she barely recognized. Bruised and scarred, just like the rest of her body. She stood there until she couldn’t look anymore, turning away to step into the shower. Letting the hot water singe her skin, burning away the perils of the days before. She thought of Bucky, his eyes widened in fright as he looked down at her. The fear on his face as she choked him, nearly bringing him to his knees before she was hit with immense force. The other man, the one who looked rough and ragged. She ran her hands down her face, wiping the memories from her mind. Before more started to trickle in.
When she was done with her soak, there was a fresh towel waiting on the sink along with a pair of clothes. Clothes much too big for her, they obviously belonged to the owner of the cabin. They smelled of pine and cigar smoke but they were warm, something she hadn’t been in a long time. When she arrived downstairs, the men were in the kitchen talking. Both of them stopped and stared when they noticed her presence.
“How are you feeling, kid?” Logan asked.
“I don’t know.” Anna muttered, she wasn’t quite sure what to feel just yet.
“There’s hot food on the stove if you’re hungry, help yourself.” Logan offered with a friendly nod.
“I think I might just get some rest, is there somewhere I can stay?” Anna asked.
“The master bedroom is upstairs to the left, you can sleep there, we’ll take the couch.” Logan winked. Anna nodded, glancing at Bucky who met her gaze with a deep sadness. He hadn’t really spoken to her since they arrived at the cabin. She couldn’t help but feel guilty whenever she looked at him, what she had done to him. She couldn’t remember why, everything before was black. She recalled his face but didn’t know where she knew him from. She felt a tug on her heart every time his eyes met hers, there were memories missing.
Quietly, Anna retreated upstairs to the master bedroom. Bucky heaved out a sigh and took a sip from his bottle of beer. Logan shook his head,
“If you start avoiding her now you’re never getting answers.” He said.
“I can’t bring myself to tell her the truth, not yet.”  Bucky frowned.
“She’ll find out eventually, either on her own or with your help.” Logan started. “And I promise you kid, neither of those outcomes are ideal but one softens the blow.”
Upstairs, as Anna began falling into slumber, a voice began echoing in her head.
“Come back, Liho. Come back, my child. Come back.”

“Is the experiment ready?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Bring her in.”
Two men in lab coats wheeled in a young woman on a table.
“Is she sedated?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good.”
“Will it work, sir?”
“I hope so.”
“And if it doesn’t?”
The man looked sternly at the other who asked the question,
“Then we terminate it.” He stated, turning his attention back to the line of syringes before him.
“I have always wanted a pet.” He said, picking up a syringe. “A mutant under my complete control. The soldier was doomed to fail eventually, but this.” He aimed the needle at the woman’s arm.
“This is evolution. Pure evolution.”
———————
“What the hell was it?” Sam questioned, standing beside Steve in an abandoned motor garage.
“I don’t know, she could move things with her mind. Who knows what else she’s capable of.” Steve sighed, looking into the other room where Bucky sat solemnly against the concrete wall.
“And you think she’s after him?” Sam asked, following Steve’s gaze.
“I do. I think whoever sent her want’s him, I don’t know for what.”
“How long do we have before she finds us again?”
Steve glanced at Sam before moving into the next room where Bucky still sat in quiet solitude.
“Buck.” Steve called, Bucky made no movement to acknowledge him.
“Bucky, we can’t help if you don’t help us. Did you know who attacked us in your apartment?”
Bucky lifted his head to look up at Steve,
“No.” He muttered.
“Do you know who might’ve sent her?” Steve continued.
“Hydra. They want to bring me back.” Bucky answered.
“Bring you back to use you again?” Steve asked. Bucky shook his head,
“To get rid of me. I failed the mission, then ran away. They want to make sure no one else knows about their secret little organization.” Bucky explained.
“Organization?”
“The place where I was kept, in Siberia.”
“Are you saying there are others like you?”
“Not exactly. They used me to train a few but none of them lasted long, except one. She was strong and with Hydra’s serum she was even stronger.” Bucky told, his eyes seemed to glaze over as he did.
“What happened to her?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know. A lot of that is fuzzy, the last time I saw her she was in her cell. Then I was in D.C.” Bucky responded.
“Do you think that whatever attacked could be her?” Steve continued. Bucky looked up at them and shook his head.
“Hydra weren’t in the business of making mutants, they wanted soldiers to infiltrate and destroy.”
“Who better to infiltrate and destroy than a mutant.” Sam said. Bucky shot him a glare.
“Listen, maybe we should talk to someone with a little more experience in this department.” Steve changed the subject.
“Who?” Sam asked.
“An old friend of a friend.”
———————
“What the hell are we doing in some dive bar in Canada?” Sam muttered under his breath as the three men walked into the building. Wood paneled walls, animal bones and heads hung as decorations. Bucky kept his head down, hiding his face with the brim of his hat.
“He was the one Tony recommended and I know he may look rough but I think he’ll help.” Steve assured as they approached the bar where a man in red plaid sat with a beer before him.
“Excuse me.” Steve stepped up beside the man.
“Fuck off.” The man responded gruffly, taking a large swig of his drink. Steve looked back at Sam and Bucky with a raise of his brows before trying again.
“Listen, we need your help, I was told-
“I don’t care what you were told, bub.” The man turned to look at Steve and remained unfazed when he realized who it was that was bothering him.
“You and your friends can find someone else to join your star spangled dance squad.” The man grumbled, turning his attention back to his beer.
“I’m not asking you to join anything, pal. There is a mutant hunting my friend and we need your help.” Steve’s voice was laced with venom, he was annoyed at how difficult Tony’s contact turned out to be.
“A mutant?” The man cocked an eyebrow. “What kind?” He asked.
“We don’t know, but she could move objects without touching them.” Steve answered. The man gulped down the rest of his beer,
“Yeah, you have yourselves a problem alright." Was all he said.
“Are you gonna help us or not?” Sam asked in frustration. The man stood up, he was much larger in comparison to the others. Before anyone could speak, the jukebox in the corner of the bar began glitching until a song began to play. Everyone in the room was silent, as the song echoed through the bar.
“Time, time, time, see what’s become of me.”
Suddenly, various objects around the building began to shake. Glasses began to explode, sparks burst from electrical sockets.
“Ah, shit.” The man in plaid muttered.
“She found us.” Sam said, looking around as the lights went out. Patrons started muttering in hushed tones to each other, trying to figure out what was going on.
“You got one hell of a pissed off mutant.” The man in plaid commented. The doors to the bar burst open, revealing the girl from the apartment. The lights flickered again, people started to scream and run from the place.
Three sharp metal claws protruded from the man in plaids hands,
“Did that just come out of you?” Sam questioned, distracted.
“Yes.” The man grumbled, his eyes were trained on the woman who still stood in the doorway. Almost like she was playing with them.
“What’s the plan?” Steve asked, but the man didn’t answer he simply lunged at the woman, like an animal breaking from its cage. The woman stuck her hand out and the man’s body froze in the air. With a swipe of her hand she tossed him into the wall where he crashed down on the booths beneath. She moved forward, walking toward where Bucky stood beside Steve. Sam made a move to step between them but she flung him back behind the bar just as easily as she had launched the other man. Her eyes were locked on Bucky, and his to hers.
“What do you want?” Steve asked, stepping in front of his friend. She didn’t respond, her eyes moving to look at Bucky. With a growl, the man in plaid tackled the woman from behind, pinning her down with his impressive strength.
“Get the fuck out of here!” He barked, as the woman began to fight his hold on her. Steve ran to help Sam up. The woman kicked the man off her, her strength rivaling his own. Getting to her feet she set her sights on Bucky. He was frozen in place, his body was struck with fear, with knowing. That face. Extending her arm forward, Bucky felt an invisible hand close around his neck. He was struggling to get air as he tugged at the invisible grip she had on him. His vision was starting to blacken,
“Hey, doll face!” A gruff voice shouted, the woman turned and was met with another skull crashing into hers. She fell to the ground and her grip on Bucky vanished. Bucky dropped to the floor as well, taking in sharp inhales as his airways opened up. His eyes traversed the woman’s unconscious body, her face. He knew that face, why did he know that face? Steve walked up with Sam leaning his body on his.
“Is your skull made of steel or something?” Sam joked.
“Adamantium. And the name is Logan.” The man in plaid responded. Sam furrowed his brow.
“I’m-“
“I know who you are, Captain.” Logan interrupted.
“Do you know who or what she is?” Steve asked instead. Logan shook his head,
“No.”
“I think I do.” Bucky choked, his throat dry. Logan, Sam and Steve all looked at him as he continued staring at the woman.
“We better get out of here.” Sam broke the silence.
“What about?” Steve gestured to the woman.
“I’ll take her somewhere safe. Somewhere she can’t run.” Logan said.
“I’m going with you.” Bucky stated.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” Steve hesitated,
“I should be there when she comes to. In case.” Bucky explained, he looked at Steve and Steve understood.
“Send me your coordinates when you arrive. I’ll join you when Sam is taken care of.”
Bucky nodded as Logan lifted the woman into his arms. He curled and uncurled his metal hand as he followed Logan to his truck. He had to be there when she woke up, just in case she remembered or didn’t. Either way he knew it had to be him.

“We’ve lost him!”
“What do you mean we lost him?”
“He hasn’t returned to his handlers, sir. His last known whereabouts were traced to he heli-carrier which crashed into the river. No body has been recovered.”
“His programming has been compromised, he must be returned and wiped before it’s too late.”
“How shall we proceed sir?”
“Prep Liho. It’s time for her to prove her reputation.”
WASHINGTON D.C. (post fall of S.H.E.I.L.D)
“I’m warning you, Rogers, you might not want to pull on that thread.” Natasha turned with a swing of her red hair and left. Steve held the file in his hands, the file that contained information on his best friend and what had happened since they had last been together.
“You’re going after him, aren’t you?” Sam questioned, hands in his pockets.
“He’s my friend, I have to.” Steve stated.
“I’m coming with you.” Sam said. Steve nodded.

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA 2016
The streets of the city were bustling. People moving about their daily routines, it was easy for him to blend in. To become one of them, though he wasn’t. He spoke the language, he bought from local markets and returned to his small apartment, as normal a routine as anyone else. No one would suspect he was in hiding. No one would suspect he wasn’t sure who he was. He was good at it. Too good. For as long as he could remember it was all he knew how to do. Infiltrate. Extract. Execute. No mistakes. No loose ends. Don’t be seen. Don’t be heard. Now he was in limbo. The life he once knew was not his own, he understood that now. He didn’t want to return to it, he’d rather die than go back.
Finishing his trip to the local market, returning to his humble one bedroom apartment with a bag of plums, he found someone waiting for him. A man he’d seen before. The man in D.C. He was reading through his notebook, the one he’d used to scribble down anything he could remember. Any fragment of the man he used to be. The man turned,
“Do you know who I am?” He asked.
“You’re Steve. I met you on the bridge.”
“I want to help you, Buck.” Steve said, closing the notebook and setting it down on the shabby kitchen table. Bucky set down the bag of plums,
“You can’t.” He muttered.
“Listen, there are people who will try to find you. Try to use you. You’re not safe.” Steve continued.
“I know.” Was Bucky’s reply. Steve furrowed his brow, looking at his friend who at one time would run charging into any battle. He now stood before him a shell of that man. Steve opened his mouth to speak again when Bucky interrupted,
“You’re here to get me back to your base, where you’ll say I’ll be safe.” Bucky shook his head.
“I won’t be safe anywhere.” He looked down at the floorboards beneath them.
“Buck, listen to me. I can help you, but you have to let me.” Steve pleaded. Bucky looked back at Steve when the sound of gunshots and screams echoed from the staircase. Sam chimed in Steve’s ear,
“You got company.”
Steve looked at Bucky as if to say “it’s time to go”. Bucky punched a hole through the floor with his metal arm and snatched a backpack out of it. More gunshots ricocheted outside in the hall, more screams until they stopped. Steve and Bucky both watched the door to the apartment carefully for whatever was on the other side. The door burst open with incredible, inhuman force.    A woman dressed in tight black clothes stood in the doorway. She lifted her head, cocking it to one side as if mocking them. She splayed her arms outwards, objects in the apartment began to lift into the air.
“Go!” Steve commanded, as the woman launched various household items at him. Bucky didn’t hesitate, jumping out the window and landing on the rooftop below. Steve blocked most of the onslaught with his shield, until he felt it being pulled from him by an invincible force. He strained against her power, charging forward to land a blow against her with the shield. The invisible pull stopped and Steve turned and ran, following Bucky’s route.
“Sam, we got a problem.”
“What kind of problem?”
“The mutant kind.”
“Shit.”

CHARADE
Inspired by the film "The Man From U.N.C.L.E", after learning of your estranged father's nefarious ties to an underground organization, you find yourself caught in the middle of two enemy spies and a whole lot of trouble. CHARADE PART TWO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arm in arm, you and James continued on your walk through Rome. You turned down a path that lead you to an area full of some ancient ruins. When from out of the shadows of some crumbling columns ahead of you, two men emerged. The ones Sam had warned about.
“Nice shoes.” The first man commented.
“Thank you.” James remarked, continuing on the path ahead.
“Perhaps you give them to me.” The first man stated. James stopped and looked back at the man,
“I think your feet are a little… small.” James started to move forward again when the second man spoke up.
“Then, gimme some money for coffee.” The Italian accents were thick. James stopped again.
“Dearest, give the gentleman something for coffee.” You interrupted, seeing the growing irritation in James’ face. With a sigh and a nod, James took out his wallet to hand the man some money. The man snatched the money and James’ wallet. James’ face was hard,
“Enjoy your coffee.” He hooked arms with you again and moved to keep going along the path when the first man stepped in front. The second man revealed a knife, you two were cornered.
“Nice watch.” The second man said. James glared at him. Sensing the rising tension you spoke up again,
“Darling, give him the watch.”
“And the ring!” The second man demanded. This time you were the one shooting a glare in his direction. With an urgent look towards James, you took off your engagement ring and gave it to the man.
“Thank you.” He smiled with a fiendish look. James continued to stand in silence, his face turned to stone.
“Give me the watch!” The second man demanded, slapping James across the face.
“Give him the watch!” The first man landed another slap. James’ his hand began shake, his eyes darting from side to side as he pondered his next move.
“James, do as he says.” You stated sternly, James looked at you and for a moment his gaze seemed to soften. Begrudgingly, James handed over the watch and the second man spit at him while the first man began to laugh. Then, James snapped. Without looking he punched the second man in the throat, sending him to the ground as he struggled to breathe. The first man pulled a gun and James moved towards him but you intercepted, holding him back. Holding his arms to his sides as she struggled to break from your grip,
“Calm down.” You whispered, as the first man helped his friend up and the two of them walked away. You let go of James.
“Not very good at this whole subtlety thing, are you?” Sam’s voice appeared from nowhere as he walked up to you both. With a voice trembling with anger James replied,
“That man stole Steve’s watch!”
“Aren’t you supposed to be an architect?” Sam ignored his first statement
“Yes, an architect would fight back if he was being disrespected, a KGB agent would’ve killed them both.” James shot back angrily.  “So it’s not trouble unless you continue to question my actions.” He finished.
“So you actually have thought this thing through?” Sam retorted sarcastically.
“Would you like to finish this a different way?” James threatened.
“Stop!” You shouted. Both men turned to look at you.
“Aren’t you both supposed to be looking after me? So why am I playing mother, huh?” You asked, walking towards them.
“Either you two start to look like you know what you’re doing, or I quit.” You stated, turning away to walk towards the path you and James were originally taking. Sam looked back at James, as if to silently say you were right.
LATER THAT EVENING
Comfortably in your hotel room, you began rummaging around the liquor cabinet as James sat playing chess by himself. The phone rang, it was your Uncle Rudy who worked alongside the Russo’s.
“Everything is alright, Uncle. James’ is a little shaken up, he’s never been in a fight before.” You glanced at James who met your gaze nervously as you finished your conversation. Hanging up the phone, a bottle and two glasses in your hand you went to sit on the couch adjacent to the chair James was in.
“That was Uncle Rudy, he’s invited us to the Russo’s party celebrating the 50th anniversary of their company tomorrow.” You said, filling up both the glasses and gulping down one for yourself. You extended the other to James,
“Drink?”
“No, thank you.” He focus returned to the chess board. You chugged the glass meant for James with a sigh, he looked at you in slight awe.
“Would you like a bigger glass?” He teased,
“I plan to finish the bottle.” You stated, pouring two more glasses. “The only question is, are you going to help me or not.”
“No, thank you.” James said. You rolled your eyes and took a sip from the new glass. A brief moment of silence passed between you.
“Are you having fun?” You asked, with no reply. With a sigh, you grabbed the bottle and your glass and stood up from the couch. Walking into the other room in the sweet where the beds were located. You switched on the radio and turned up the volume, glass in hand you began to dance. Twisting and swaying about the room, waiting to see how long it would take him to get up.
“This is not a good idea.” He grumbled, his back still facing you. Ignoring him, you continued to spin and twirl to your hearts delight. Frustrated, James got up and headed towards you.
“I’m going to bed, please turn it off.” He stated, as you shimmied to him preventing him from getting to his bed.
“It’s not fun dancing by yourself. I need a partner.” You flirted, looking up into his blue eyes that were doing their best not to make eye contact.
“No.” Was all he said.
“As in, you can’t dance? Or you don’t want to.” You replied, still gazing up at him.
“We’ll just say both.” He muttered. You reached for his left hand, then the other, taking both in your hands you began to playfully force him to move. You continued to be his puppeteer for a moment, before lifting his left hand up to slap him across the face. Immediately, any short of enjoyment on his expression disappeared.
“Sorry.” You stifled a giggle as you continued to move his arms in a mock dance, then taking his right hand to slap him again.
“You are not in a mechanic shop anymore.” He pointed his finger at your scoldingly.
“No drink?” You teased, taking a sip from your glass.
“Don’t you make me put you over my knee.” He threatened. You set your glass down,
“So you won’t dance, but you do want to wrestle.”
“What? No, that’s not- Before he could finish his sentence, you lunged for him. Grabbing him around the waist and pushing him back into the main area of the suite. Slamming him into the arm of the couch, he flopped onto the floor with you on top. This continued for a good while, destroying the furniture, breaking the tables and glass until you finally ran out of energy. You had him pinned to the ground, both of you heaving in exhaustion. You stared down at him, and him back up at you as you slowly began to succumb to the sleepiness. Ever so slightly, leaning closer and closer towards him. Your faces were just breaths from each other now, his features were the softest you’d ever seen them since you met. A gentle side of a beast. You collapsed, dropping your head on his shoulder leaving him in a state of confusion.
Carefully, he carried you to your bed and gently tucked you in.
“Sleep well, little mechanic.” He whispered, moving to walk away till you gripped his hand preventing him from doing so. The gesture happened for a brief second before you lost your grip but it lingered with James, a sudden feeling coming over him that he knew could not be allowed to continue.

ROME
You arrived in Rome arm in arm with the strange man you’d met a few days prior. He was stern and quiet. A man of few words. You checked into the beautiful hotel, Sam following behind you a few hours later. You and the man, who’d you learned you were to call James, had been sitting in the lobby when he arrived. A few moments after, James took your arm again and lead you out of the hotel for a stroll through Rome. As a young couple visiting Italy would do. You admired the engagement ring James had given you on the way over. It was a sparkling little diamond, you had to admit you liked the way it looked on you.
“Where are we going?” You asked, as you walked down the Spanish Steps. James replied with more emotion than you’d heard from him,
“The same place every architect goes when they visit Rome.” He started. “To see the sights.” He waved his hand before him.
“So Mr. Architect, I’m sure you’ve done your homework. Why don’t you tell me a bit about the steps?”  You pulled your arm from his as you reached the bottom of the steps. Stopping to face him as you waited for his response. James looked around awkwardly for a moment before beginning,
“Good question.” He paused, moving to keep walking as you followed at his side. “The steps were constructed in 1723, credited to Italian architects.” He stopped, as you stepped forward onto the border of the fountain.
“Really, built by a Russian.” He stated proudly. You shot him a look and he continued. “Sergei Ivanov. Sergei also had his mother, Yagada, who introduced him to classical architecture. Whom, he revered as his muse. Unfortunately for Sergei, his mother died in the middle of construction. So! In memory of his beloved Yagada, he made one step to commemorate every year of his mothers life.” His finished, a proud smile on his face.
“So she died as 135?” You asked. James blinked,
“No. She died at 100, he was 35. So, 135 steps.” He crossed his hands behind his back as you glared at him.
“Impressive.” You paused a moment. “So she gave birth at the age of 65?” The smile slowly began to fall from James’ face.
“No.” He muttered, defeated.
Not a moment later, Sam rolled up on a yellow moped and stopped, pretending to look at the fountain.
“Evening Comrade.” Sam said. James frowned,
“You’re not supposed to be making contact in public”
“You’re being followed.” Sam stated, ignoring James completely. You looked over in interest.
“I know, two men from the hotel lobby. One in a brown suit the other in a leather jacket. Which is why you should leave.” James retorted with annoyance.
“They diverted when you turned down the steps. So, I imagine they’ll be waiting ahead for you.” Sam continued, once again ignoring James’ concern.
“I will handle them.” He said.
“Handle… just to avoid any confusion, you do mean give them your wallet and act scared.”
“Scared?!” James protested, glaring at Sam.
“What’s going on?” You asked, sliding up to the other side of James.
“You’re being tested. Someone is trying to make sure that your fiancé is really an architect, and not someone who’s trained how to fight. Ex-KGB agent for example.” Sam explained, staring off at some distant object.
“I said you are not needed here.” James growled, staring daggers at Sam.
“I think you should do as he says.” You chimed in, tapping your foot uneasily. James met your eyes for a moment then rolled them before looking back to Sam who began to speak again.
“And remember, take it like a bitch.” He smirked.
“This is not the way.” James grumbled, grabbing your arm and pulling you in the opposite direction of Sam.

“Are you kidding me?” Sam protested. “I have to team up with bionic staring machine?” He pointed at Bucky who had his arms crossed over his chest and a sour look on his face.
“It’s just for the mission, Sam. We need his help.” Tony explained. “He’s knows his role already, but we need you to get the girl out of East Berlin first.”
“Should I tell her about the arranged marriage or save that for later?” Sam said sarcastically, earning a glare from Bucky.
“It’s bad enough I gotta be partnered with the man who tried to kill me, but now I gotta set her up with you.” Sam continued. Bucky clutched his fists together, his mechanical arm whirring.
“Enough! There’s more important shit here than who gets the girl, damnit!” Tony shouted. Bucky relaxed and Sam sighed. Tony continued,
“Sam, you focus on the Russo’s themselves. Mrs. Victoria Russo is the one to watch out for, she’s the brains behind the whole operation. Theres your girl.” Tony said snidely.
“If all goes well we stop an underground nazi organization from selling their warheads to our enemies. Got it?” Tony finished. Bucky and Sam looked at each other begrudgingly. This mission would definitely be bumpy but they’d both be damned if they didn’t make it work. Even if they couldn’t stand each other.
“Got it, boss.” Sam confirmed. Bucky nodded silently.
“Good, let the charade begin.” Tony clapped his hands then left the room, leaving the other two men standing in silence.
“You better not screw this up, man.” Sam taunted.
“Just stay out of my way then.” Bucky retorted.
“I don’t want to be covering your ass if you lose your cool.” Sam shot back.
“You worry about you, you forget how long I’ve been in this business.” Bucky snapped.
“I didn’t forget what you did for most of your life, not just espionage. You sure you can keep that caged?” Sam knew he was getting under Bucky’s skin. He could tell by the way Bucky’s fingers on his flesh hand began to tap against his leg.
“I can handle myself.” Bucky moved forward, slamming his shoulder into Sam’s as he made his way out of the room.
***
East Berlin
Sam approached the mechanic shop, straightening his suit as he stepped inside.
“I’m looking for Y/N Y/L/N.” He said to the first man he spotted. The man gestured with his thumb to the back where a pair of legs were sticking out from underneath a car.
“That’s a beautiful machine.” He commented, standing above them. You pushed yourself out from under the car and glared up at Sam.
“Can I assist you?” You asked, your face was smudged with black. Grease and oil from the car.
“You can, you are Miss Y/L/N, right?” Sam asked, moving to place the briefcase he carried with him on the desk beside the car. You rolled yourself back underneath the car,
“Depends on who’s asking.” You retorted, returning to tinkering with the machine.
“Do you know where your father is?” Sam continued, taking a seat in the empty chair. You rolled yourself back out from under the car and sat up, wiping your hands with an already dirty towel.
“No, I haven’t spoken to him for many years. Why?” You asked, standing up to your feet now.
“There is reason to believe that your father is in league with a very dangerous group of people and we need to get to him, fast.” Sam stated, intertwining his fingers and leaning back in the chair.
“And why would I want to help, let alone know where he is. I already told you we haven’t spoken in many years.” You responded sharply.
“Well, you can either come with me or let them pay you a visit next. I assure you it will not be as friendly.” Sam started as he stood up from the chair. He walked over to the entrance of the garage to peek outside, noticing the shadow of someone watching.
“May I borrow your car?”
“Excuse me?”
“We need to get out of East Berlin, and I don’t have a car so, may I borrow yours?” He was urgent yet still polite. He was still peering outside of the garage, as if expecting someone. Realizing you didn’t have much choice, you pulled the keys from the pocket of your overalls.
“Marvelous! You drive.”
***
After a rather perilous chase through the streets of East Berlin by who you assumed were the evil people your father dealt with, you arrived back at a small hotel on the other side of the wall. Far from the little shop you had spent a good amount of time in. Sam had prepared a small meal for you then disappeared into the other room where you assumed whomever was giving the orders was waiting. Being chased by some evil nazi group was enough to ruin your appetite. Instead, you decided to rest on the little cot in the corner
The next day, you found yourself trying on dresses, hats and handbags. All in the name of espionage.
“These are more expensive than my car!” You remarked, twirling around in the latest statement dresses of the year. The door to the shop opened and a strong but stern looking man walked in. His hands were in his pockets, his eyes looked at you coldly.
“That is not how an architect would dress his fiancée.” His tone was just as cold as his stare.
“Fiancée?!” You exclaimed, looking from Sam to the strange man who just entered. Sam shrugged.
“No. No! This is not happening.” You tossed the earrings and rings onto the floor and stormed out of the building with Sam on your heels. He grabbed you by the arm to stop you,
“Listen, I know it is not ideal but it is just for the mission. I promise, he is going to protect you while I infiltrate the Russo’s.” Sam explained.
“Who are you supposed to be?” You asked, as Sam let go of your arm.
“I am Arthur Hammond, specialist of fine art. The Russo’s happen to have an extensive exhibit.” He smiled and you sighed.
Reluctantly, you walked back into the store and stormed straight past the man and into the dressing room.
“Good job, pal.” Sam remarked.
“You were dressing her like she still lives behind the wall.” Bucky retorted.
“She’s from behind the wall.” Sam shot back.
“Not anymore she isn’t, so she will no longer dress that way.” Bucky replied, the pair were starting to get more intense when you reappeared from the dressing room in a beautiful new dress.
“Have you seen the price of this handbag? It costs more than anything I’ve ever owned.”
Bucky looked back at Sam with a smirk. This was indeed going to be a rough ride.
