OC Fact #38
Vipsi was an eldritch entity that had knowledge of and could control, to an extent, time itself. They were good friends with Nova, but got worried when he started showing signs of unexpected illness.
They offered to look into the future for him to see if they could find a solution, but he refused. Nova was ready to accept any fate. But he requested Vipsi to look into the future and see if Nova's son would have a father to raise him.
So Vipsi looked. And Tsumi would have a father.
But the future was a lot worse than Nova could've imagined. He would not heed Vipsi's cautions to hear him out and refused any more information about the future.

I've seen a lot of people comparing Huskerdust to a healthy version of Stolitz and it's kinda got me thinking... Staticmoth as the evil fucked up version of Fizzmodeus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THINK ABOUT IT!!!!! The parallels between Val and Ozzie are obvious. Like that man wants to be Ozzie so bad it's insane, from the way he dresses to the way he decorates to straight up OWNING A ROBO FIZZ, Val clearly wishes he was the embodiment of Lust. But are there parallels between Vox and Fizz? Actually, surprisingly yeah. They're both showmen, like aggressively so. They're very public figures, with their face all over every product in Hell(albeit Vox is doing it a lot more purposefully then Fizz). Fizz's antagonism towards Blitzø is actually pretty reminiscent of Vox's towards Alastor(except Fizz and Blitzø have a lot more baggage lmao), and they even share some aesthetic similarities! Specifically the colors of Fizz's robotic limbs matching Vox's overall color scheme. Which speaking of robots, that's probably their biggest similarity overall: they're both partially made of technology. I hesitate to say cyborg because Idk how much that applies to Vox, since object heads aren't typically classified as cyborgs as far as I know, and we don't actually know how much of Vox is organic(also cyborg is just one of those words I have an inexplicable dislike of Idk-), but like. Think cyborg I guess. Like Vox is a LOT more of a dick and probably doesn't have a very tragic backstory? Maybe? Unclear. But the similarities are undeniable.
Okay, now that individual parallels are out of the way, how could their relationship to eachother parallel Fizzmodeus? Starting with baseline aesthetics: they got the height difference. It's not as dramatic as Fizz and Ozzie's but TO BE FAIR, Huskerdust are the same way(their height difference is obvious, but not as massive as Blitzø and Stolas'). Staticmoth is also very buisness-partners-with-benefits and some hints at deeper feelings, which is how we were introduced to Fizzmodeus. I don't think Val and Vox feel the need to hide their romantic feelings? But tbh it could go either way we haven't seen much of their dynamic yet. That's kinda where the similarities I could spot find because see previous sentence, so let's move onto the differences!
I think a good way to breakdown what makes Staticmoth toxic Fizzmodeus is actually by bringing Alastor and Blitzø back in to compare and contrast how Val handles Vox's rivalry with how Ozzie handles Fizz's. In Radio Killed the Video Star, the only reason Val tells Vox that Alastor is at the hotel is to piss him off. He clearly enjoys Vox's reaction, and keeps egging him on. Teasing him about it. Which like, friendly teasing between partners is well and good, but Val is clearly just doing it cause he wants to see a fight and doesn't care about how distressed Vox is about this. Vox goes off on his own and sings a fuckin banger, gets publically humiliated, causes a massive blackout. Val doesn't really do shit to help him out, just kinda sits there and. Idk watches? Unclear what the other Vees are actually doing because most of Stayed Gone takes place in funny TV land where Vox is capable of bending reality to his whim for the sake of visual interest. But what Val is actively doing during the musical number isn't important so who cares. What's important is that he egged Vox on, convinced him that confronting Alastor right then was a good idea, and then just sat back as Vox got so pissed off he had a meltdown. Which I SWEAR I'm not trying to dramatize this scene it just sounds really fucking bad when you write it all down from this perspective. I think it's also worth noting that all of this is DIRECTLY AFTER Vox did the exact opposite for Val, calming him down so he doesn't make a fool of himself in public.
Meanwhile compare that to how Ozzie handles Fizz and Blitzø's relationship. During House of Asmodeus, once Fizz realizes Blitzø is there, he starts publically roasting him about how shitty his love life is. Ozzie encourages him, and even gives him a little congratualtions in the background when Verosika joins in for changing the subject, but the difference here is that House of Asmodeus takes place in a much more controlled environment, so it's less likely either of them will have to face consequences for being assholes. There's also how Ozzie's encouragement is just a lot more genuine. Like "yeah babe, go insult that guy who traumatized and abandoned you whoo!" rather then "hey hey look there's that guy you hate. You should go fight with him lmao show him who's boss." Then there's the ending. At the end of both Stayed Gone and House of Asmodeus, Vox and Fizz eat shit and die. Don't worry they're both fine like immediately after, but while in House of Asmodeus Ozzie immediately rushes over to Fizz to make sure okay, we uh. Do not see Vox interact with anybody but Alastor in the direct aftermath of his eating shit and dying, which is fair because he's in his weird little gamer cave. Then we skip straight to the Vees having a meeting to decide what they're gonna do about Alastor, and we don't really know what any of them were doing in the interim between the end of Stayed Gone and the meeting, so uh this part of the comparison kinda falls flat. But again something worth noting is that Val just straight up. Does not care about Alastor during the meeting scene. He's sitting there bedazzling his fucking gun BY HAND with school glue and rhinestones, not even paying attention to the meeting, despite being the one to get Vox all riled up about Alastor IN THE FIRST PLACE.
In short: Val encourages Vox to fight Alastor without thinking it through, doesn't bother to help out during the actual fight, and then immediately stops caring the moment the fights over. Meanwhile Ozzie, while encouraging Fizz to pick on Blitzø, backs him up the whole time, and while still supportive of his boyfriend, doesn't actively encourage Fizz to do things that would get him hurt. Ozzie also supports Fizz by refusing to let Blitzø have an Asmodean crystal because he knows Fizz wouldn't like it! Which is the exact opposite of pissing your partner off on purpose so you can watch a fight!!! And if that isn't enough evidence for you, then uh. I guess you could compare how Val treats... just everybody around him, really, with how Ozzie does(but that's more individual character analysis than relationship analysis). Or you could talk about how fed up with Val's shit Vox clearly is in comparison to the mutual support of Fizzmodeus. Or how. Val throws a glass at Vox. And breaks his phone. And then Vox has to scream in his face to get him to listen-
Idk how to end this so uh. DEMON ATTACK RAH!!! 👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹

tw: cannibalism (yeah idk guys, i shocked myself. this was supposed to be cute 😭)
chimera suguru, who clawed up from the depths of tartarus, carrying the unfulfilled wishes of the dead on his clipped wings. it may be too late for him to soar up to the heavens now, but he sure as hell can drag as many people as possible with him to the bowels of the hellfire.
chimera suguru, who's got two long blackened horns, protruding from his hairline. a thin scaled tail trailing after him, and a long mane of luscious black hair. on his back rests heavy, wings as black as the night sky, dotted with flecks of gold. there's something so tragically beautiful about him that people can't help but stop and stare. upon looking closely, they find an alarmingly deep bitterness in the brown pearls of his eyes.
chimera suguru, borne from vengeance, filled to the brim with an innate desire to corrupt and destroy. he controls his urges as best as he can, but something inside of him purrs to release the wrath of his foremothers when seeing the looks 'normal' hybrids and humans give him. like he's frankenstein's monster, unnatural and a crime against a higher power, or mr hyde, deformed and inherently evil.
as if there's anything 'normal' about being a hybrid in the first place. besides, if it's a monster they seek, who is he to hide?
chimera suguru, who settles for feasting on the flesh and blood of regular humans. he hates it. he hates it so so much, and they taste like misery, but he really can’t help it. the voice in his head finally settles and quietens down when indulging in his latest victim, making sure to lick the blood clean off his lips. it’s not enough though, as soon as the last bite goes down his throat, his bloodlust increases tenfold. he hates what he’s becoming, but it’s an eat or be eaten world... right?
chimera suguru, who feels broken and messily glued back together. constantly in pain and agony, trying to reconcile with the two parts of him, split between somewhat moral and immoral. id growing stronger and stronger, silencing the superego, and tossing the ego aside. he wants his torment to end, the voices to quiet, the divine retribution in his blood to spill.
chimera suguru, who lays his eyes on you and an unfamiliar emotion churns in the depths of his gut. he’s so used to feeling hot flashes of ugly emotions, but looking at you, it was like crawling out of hell, on his knees, and onto heaven's gate. a hot, fluttery feeling slowly travelling throughout his body. he loathed it. he basked in it.
he’s never wanted to be closer to someone as he has you.
Tumblr media
an: i tried to write a cute hybrid thing, but it ended up coming out like this. im not mad at it, but suguru and reader would NOT be a healthy dynamic. like at all.

How do you learn to love yourself if your internalized bigotries makes you radioactive to others?
Ive been learning that, tragically, it's not possible to only hate yourself and be cool to everyone else. Self hate always manifests outwards and hurts others, especially if it comes from a place of marginalized identity. I know this because I've been on the receiving end: I've known people with ED whose judgement makes me feel worse about eating food. I've known trans girls who call themselves cross dressers because they haven't figured out they're allowed to be girls, who make me feel like a crossdresser because of this. And I've known autistic people who are clearly trying to be "not like those autistic people" who leave me wondering if I'm the kind of autistic person they don't want to be like.
I recognize this phenomenon in others, and I recognize the self hate inside myself, the internalized ableism, fatphobia, and transmisogyny. I try my best to love myself, and I believe doing so means I need to surround myself with fat, autistic, trans women, but I'm scared that in my current state, my own self hate will hurt the very people I need to be in community with. Do you have any ideas of how to navigate this? Thanks
The long and short of it all is that it's a multi-pronged process. While you work on healing your self concept, working on your trauma recovery, and finding yourself supportive relationships that accept you as you are, you also have to work on targeting your own behaviors that drive people away, shut them out, shame them, or otherwise make these dynamics worse. The good news is you dont have to eradicate shitty ideas and reactions from your head -- you can accept them as a part of the reality you have long lived in, and focus on changing your actions, which is what actually affects people. Your feelings and thoughts can never be evil and never do any harm on their own.
I hate to be this person but I have a about 20,000 words on this whole dynamic you are describing in my next book, Unlearning Shame! It comes out in Feb but please please feel free to pirate it at libgen.rs if you're not good for the $20-30. lord knows the people most affected by these dynamics are also the most financially marginalized so please grab it for free if you want.
I also have a related piece in my Substack queue, specifically about how unmasked Autistics can better love the still masked and still self hating among us...so look out for that. that will be free to read as all my essays are.

Reverse Unpopular Opinion: Noriaki Kakyoin
I really like that he's a bastard, might actually be my favorite thing about him. He's designed to be "the thin and sensitive one", he's made to be pretty and attractive to an extent the others aren't, and of course he's given a very sympathetic and tragic backstory and death, but a lot of the time the spotlight's on him, he's kind of a mean jerk but in a really understated fashion that makes it funny. There is a line of succession among Araki's pointedly villainous heroes that starts with B.T and is embodied in the current protagonist Jodio, and I think Kakyoin is in there, predating the likes of Rohan and Giorno. It's not for nothing that he is our first villain Stand user, and why they make a point of contrasting his charming honor student personality with his horrible gross tentacle puppet power.
I also like that this ties into his prideful personality, and the reasons why he's tagging along to defeat DIO. He's a guy who's grown used to being disconnected from people and ostracized and self-reliant (much of what I love about Death 13 retroactively is that it's hitting Kakyoin hard with this before we understand why this is a personal button for him, and it's not a beat that would work with the other Crusaders), having maybe the closest bond with his Stand that we see among the Crusaders, and his dynamic with DIO is interesting to me because he blames himself for falling victim to DIO more so than he blames DIO for it. It comes up more prominently in the D'Arby fight and the finale that he's pushing through not just a deep fear, but also a form of self-hatred whenever he thinks about what DIO did to him. He feels ashamed and humiliated and even abused, even knowing about DIO's power and the flesh buds and having seen others in his situation, seeing what happened to Polnareff and Enya, and it doesn't really dissuade him from this thinking.
It's that whole speech he gives to Jotaro in his debut about how evil is determined by who wins and who loses: people tend to forget it because he's being brainwashed, but the flesh bud doesn't alter personalities like that, Polnareff refutes this in his first encounter. That wasn't the fleshbud, that was Kakyoin talking, and he'd come back to that sentiment later. He lost to DIO, nothing else mattered, he was the loser and thus the evil one. And so he wants to make up for it, to stand up to DIO again and not give in, to be freed from him. He's constantly putting his friends first during the journey but at his most personal, when he's steeling himself, he thinks back to that and swears to overcome it. People talk a lot about how Kakyoin was a mega hit with the female demographic because he's pretty and charming in a way the sweaty buff men aren't and because he makes a good pair with Jotaro, and okay sure that's part of it, but I think the fact that his arc being that intimate, that tragic, and panning out into a story about overcoming abuse and standing strong in the face of your abuser, even if all you can do is save others from him, that was the secret ingredient. Intentionally or not, that stings pretty deep.
Tumblr media
But mostly I like him because he is a bastard, and he's the character who's not supposed to look or act like one, so the fact that he is makes it better. "Tricking your friends into feeding a baby his own shit" is not a beat that would work with the others, or even something you could land, no matter how evil the baby was, if the guy doing it wasn't capable of selling it as a cool and funny and karmically satisfying thing to be doing.

but what if I'm into murderous thieves who game the system and grind for hours every day to make it through the soul-crushing pressure cooker of stress that is high school? what if slitting the throat of your replacement cleric in an evil gambit that's constantly getting fucked up by a party who just happens to always be in the way makes me love her more, actually? just say you don't support women's wrongs.
(In all seriousness, I've legitimately loved the Rat Grinders and Kipperlilly Copperkettle this season, and this episode has only made me more excited. Toxic dynamics and ruthless groups who can only rely on each other are my jam, guys. And the fact that these characters are a party full of the Bad Kids' shadow selves is so, so narratively juicy. I think full on Big Bads or reconciliation in the face of their similarities/the common enemy of the system are both on the table, and a hearty "hell yeah" to either one.
Either way, I'll stick with my Rat Grinder apologism a little longer. What can I say? I love characters who aren't protagonist-y enough to break the system and have to worm their way through it. And frankly, the response to the Rat Grinders has at times felt so genuinely vitriolic that it's activated my Ornery Defense Mechanisms. Like, c'mon, if people like a fictional character--or even don't hate them with the same burning passion of a thousand suns that you do--that doesn't mean they're condoning murder or anything. Sometimes we like the bad guys. Sometimes we give them tragic backstories because they're just kids.
Also, the real reason I wrote this was because I wanted to complain about the "fucking up Kipperlilly's name" bit. Yes, I understand that it started in-game and people are running with it. [I didn't really like it there, for the record.] Yes, I understand that it's funny, and I'm being sensitive. But especially in fandom, it's started to feel...really gross? Like there's actual malice behind the misnaming; it feels dehumanizing to a disproportionate degree.)
anyway, go rat grinders! kill some more people, actually. for me.

Honestly, Metamy's dynamic to me is both silly and tragic (my favorite). The combination of Amy falling for an evil robotic copy of Sonic is hilarious, but at the same time, the evil robotic copy developing feelings he didn't know he had for the sweet hero is tragic. When you think about it Amy's little crush on metal is both funny and confusing for her as "hes evil and a robot" but other than that she doenst think much of it, but for metal it's so much more. He realizes that not only does he love the hero, his enemy, but he realizes he can love. With him developing feelings for Amy, he not only realizes he has real feelings, that he's more than just his code. It's more than just a file. More than just metal. He's has to struggle with the fact that he's not metal. He's Metal. With Amy, when she discovers her feelings for him, it's confusing, Metal is just Sonic but evil, so why does she like him. But as she spends more time with him, she realizes herself that he's his own person, not just code and orders. He might resemble Sonic and like some of the same things, but he's still him. She finds that she didn't just fall for a different version of Sonic, but she fell for Metal. She also has to learn what true longing is. With Sonic, he just didn't feel the same, but they were always friends, but with Metal, she couldn't even be around him unless their battling. She couldn't be with Sonic, and now she can't even be with someone who loves her the way she loves them because their on different sides. But idk. Also, robot x organic ships are one of my favorite dynamics, and the idea of Amy going out to beat eggman and his minions ass and coming back with one of said minions as her new bf is hilarious.
Sorry for the long ask btw. I like to talk about them...
You are so right and about tragic side of it specifically... For amy love is natural and effortless, as is being good, despite metal being unconventional for that. She just has so much sympathy and kindness to give, even for an evil robot. Metal meanwhile, emotion is an error for him. Recognizing being in love is recognition of something deeply broken inside. Something doesnt make sense, something overtakes the cold logic of the world of oppression he operates under. Allowing error to cloud his logic gives his life meaning other than servitude. And yet, its impossible to stay what he is and be with amy. Amy will never be on his side, and he cant be on hers. There are hard coded allegiances in him, and to betray them is to break his mind even further....

i get that when it comes to writing fiction you as the author have complete control of the story you want to write and don’t have to take canon into account at all but considering who anakin is on top of you not even really giving a shit about anakin why write obikin at all (you’re obviously not the only obikin writer and i’m sorry for only asking you but i would really like to understand the appeal of writing about such a horrible character especially because you couldn’t care less about him anyway) you don’t owe me an explanation so feel free to ignore if you want
genuinely cannot decipher the tone of this ask and it’s sending me.
anyway: my relationship is anakin is Extremely Complicated. as a character in a story, i do give a shit about him. i fell in love with star wars and specifically the prequels and even more specifically obi-wan — and that’s all anakins story. as a character he’s brilliant and awful and terrifying and tragic and so fucking doomed it makes me insane. i LOVE anakins story.
however, anakin just … as a guy or whatever. does not matter to me in the way he does for a lot of other people. he’s not baby girl. he’s not a meow meow. i don’t find him particularly endearing or attractive. he’s exhausting. and, when you add in my love for obi-wan (which i won’t even try to explain cus that’s too much), anakin becomes an asshole. it’s like having a friend with a boyfriend who treats them like shit. JUST DUMP HIS ASS !
and you’re right, anakin is horrible. he’s a murderer and a facist and a creep and he’s fucking EVIL. but here’s the thing: i love obi-wan, and obi-wan loves anakin. and through obi-wan, i can love anakin. through obi-wan, anakin becomes endearing and beautiful and worth all the trouble.
their dynamic is so fascinating to me bc obi-wan is so good. he’s literally described as “the bedrock that all goodness rests upon” or something like that. and yet, he loves and misses and longs for that horrible murderer facist evil creep. so yeah, that’s it <3

Aight, for my first proper thirst post after my long vacation, I present to you :
Tumblr media
This fucking music video. Oh, Kayano Mikoto, the woman that you have made me 🧎‍♀️
But no, this music video is actually very sad 😭 Because not only does it confirms Mikoto having another personality, but this song is sung almost entirely by that other personality—“John” as Es calls him, short for “John Doe”
Mikoto is a tragic character y’all, I know we were all hornii about him during his first trial ☠️ But goddamn, his story is one of my favorites to dissect.
I really believed Mikoto when he said that he couldn’t remember a thing about his murders, because he doesn’t seem like he’s lying and seemed genuinely confused—So, I ended up entertaining the theory that his brain is actually erasing the memory due to trauma ☠️ One anon even theorized that Mikoto himself is the one doing the murder, and “John” is the one trying to protect him, which was something I started to believe in for a while—BUT THEN HIS SECOND TRIAL DROPPED AND HOO BOI, there’s a lot to unpack here lol
First of all, contrary to popular belief, Mikoto is now proven to be a kind character, he doesn’t have ill intentions. He’s a people-pleaser, who always bottles up his feelings and would end up suffering because of this. You could tell from how exhausted he looks, yet he keeps up a smile when talking to other people like his mom so they wouldn’t worry about him. But he’s not okay 😭
Eventually, the stress from his job got to him so bad that “John” was born to protect him from breaking. It’s currently unknown who or how many he killed, but it seems to imply from the Drama CD that it was a bunch of strangers that happened to irritate “John”, so he came out and killed them.
One thing to point out most of all here is that “John” is not evil—He didn’t kill just for laughs, he killed to protect Mikoto. He knows how kind Mikoto is, but just couldn’t handle the fact that the world mistreats Mikoto so much, taking advantage of his kindness. “John” cares for Mikoto, he was born to do things that Mikoto couldn’t do, because he just can’t sit there and watch as Mikoto break down.
“John” even expresses his distaste for us, the viewers/voters, for calling Mikoto a liar and making him seem like a villain in the first trial. Us, voting him Guilty/Unforgivable only made Mikoto’s stress-level sky-rocket so “John” comes out more in Milgram.
But his music video tells us that “John” does regret his actions. But I don’t think it’s the “I regret killing those people” kind of regret, it’s the “I regret making Mikoto suffer even more by killing those people” kind of regret, because look where that got the both of them. “John” practically ruined Mikoto’s life by trying to save/protect him, hence why I think he was apologizing to Mikoto at the end instead, not to us.
In the Drama CD, “John” basically admits to his murders, but begs Es to forgive/vote Mikoto innocent/forgivable because Mikoto is technically not the one who did the crime. Milgram is judging Mikoto as the Prisoner and not “John”, so he wants to at least put Mikoto at ease by telling him that he is innocent/forgivable. He tells Es that he’s afraid that if Mikoto is voted Guilty again this time around, the “Original kind Mikoto” will soon disappear, and that “John” will have take over. But on the contrary, if we vote Mikoto innocent, then “John” promises that he will be the one disappear.
I feel extremely unwell about their dynamic 🧎‍♀️Mikoto and even “John” deserved better than this. Mikoto doesn’t even know “John” exist bro 😭

Scattered thoughts about the YR faves as we approach season 3
It’s been a busy week, and then the week before that was busy too, so I’ve been reading but not fully weighing in on many of the season 3 questions that have been starting to bubble up on my dash. So I’m posting the thoughts swirling around in my mind about my two favorite characters (Sara and August) just so that my thoughts can exist somewhere other than my own head.
People are starting to discuss the question of Sara and Simon reconciling again, and I think I might have to address that in another post of its own. I spent an entire semester of grad school looking at how characters reconcile in fiction, and obviously I think a lot of it is going down to Simon’s needs and priorities and decisions, so obviously I have Thoughts. (I also have minimal patience for fans who want Sara to crawl over a football field’s worth of broken glass for Simon if that is what Simon doesn’t want himself.)
I feel like one of the questions surrounding August’s character arc are whether there is hope for him to own his actions and change one day, or whether he’s only going to get worse, and never be able to break his cycles of awfulness. Some folks argue that season 2 put that question to rest and that he’s unchangeable. I argue that the question is still in play. The more complex reasons are in my restorative justice post, but I also argue that it would be incredibly strange writing to take one of your show’s most dynamic characters and have his character arc stagnate and go nowhere new in season 3. Now, he could choose to turn over a new leaf in season 3, or he could triple down on his harmful decisions. The point is I think it would have to be another choice, and if he makes the decision to embrace harming others and himself, it would have to be a tragic choice, and not something we can be smug about because we Already Knew He Was Evil. I dunno, there’s this like… sometimes there’s this tendency in other fandoms to gloat and be like “I, Unlike The Other Girls, was not distracted by this broody brunette man’s hotness, and I realized he was bad all along. One hundred points to me for not clamoring for a redemption arc.” And like, yes, it’s fun to laugh at Dude Watchin’ With the Brontës once in a while (I laugh at it!) but I think we also have to acknowledge that fiction is about people growing and changing and we as media enjoyers sometimes become invested in character arcs. It just feels weird to me that fans would gloat about like… the supposed moral superiority of not being invested in a character arc that the show clearly wants us to be invested in.
If August is always going to cause harm and he is unable to change his ways, then he may continue to target Simon with the drugs and the blackmail. But he may also choose to target Sara, especially if he finds out she called the police on him. He has pictures and information he can use against her now, and I feel like that is probably, very likely what the show would do to show us that he is Too Far Gone. Frankly I find that terrifying. What I find even more terrifying is that I know there will be fans (probably those who use anonymous messages on the more public facing blogs) who will say that Sara “deserves it” because she “knew he was bad when she had sex with him.” Like. Can we agree not to do that as a fandom, and call it out when we see it? Because I’m pretty sure that Lisa would not write a storyline like that while cackling and going “haha that bitch Sara got what’s coming to her.” I’m pretty sure if Lisa writes something like that she’ll want us to feel sympathy for Sara too. And I mean, you don’t have to feel sympathy, but using the cloak of anonymity to express open misogynistic malice would be… yikes.
I also think that if the show is making the decision to say that August is always going to cause harm, that he’s never going to escape a cycle of harming himself and others and fall in to patterns of abuse, then we should want to see Sara reconnect with others in season three and find some sort of healing or connection. I guess that doesn’t have to be her finding connections with Simon. It could be! It could also be Felice, or Linda, or Maddie, or anyone. (I’m really hoping Sara will get to connect with Wilhelm.) But there’s good in wanting her to find connections, and for wanting her to know that there is a path forward in life that isn’t total isolation or like, packing herself off to the convent to atone forever. Especially if the message about August is that he’s somehow unable to change and is just that awful. If your view of August is that he’s so monstrous or unforgivable, so caught in dangerous patterns that it was wrong for Sara to get close to him at all, then we need to view Sara’s relationship with him as something that put her in danger, even when she chose a relationship with him at first. And one of the ways you stay out of danger is by having strong connections to other loved ones. Abuse works because the abuser uses isolation as a weapon. Also, presuming the show reaches the verdict that August is an abuser who can’t change—even if August and Sara never talk to one another again, Sara being friendless in other ways just sweeps the path clear for the next abuser to swoop down on her. I hope people would recognize that as a tragedy too.
If, however, the show goes in the direction of like… August takes his first steps toward making better decisions, and gets some therapy or rehab or whatever else, then ultimately his past relationship with Sara might play an indirect role in that, and in helping August see alternatives to his current way of being. I’m not saying the simple act of falling in love redeems someone for wrongs done. It doesn’t! (Young Royals actually does a lot to subvert that as a narrative, which is something I address when I talk about Wilhelm, again in my restorative justice post.) I’m saying Sara was the only damn person on the show in season 2 who told August it would be good for his soul to confess and attempted to support him in that, however imperfectly. Every other teenager who knew what August did (Wilhelm, Felice, Alexander) took it for granted that he wouldn’t confess—and, you know, fair on Wille and Felice’s part, but also Alexander couldn’t have gone to an adult, huh? Every single adult that August talked to about the video (Kristina, Rickard) insisted he keep quiet about it, scared him into it even. It takes more than one person in a community to hold someone accountable for wrongs done, and Hillerska as a community has repeatedly failed that test. I don’t know, I keep looking at that promo picture of August alone in his room and wonder if he’s practicing the breathing exercises Sara taught him. They don’t have to be together again for that to be the case. Maybe the memory of her will be helpful to him in some way.
Ultimately I don’t—at the moment—really care about whether August goes to jail or not. People will interpret this as me saying “I don’t think August should go to jail” and that’s not actually what I’m saying. It’s just that I find the question of whether he’s capable of change or not infinitely more interesting, and the role the system/Hillerska plays in encouraging that change (or not) infinitely more interesting than the question of what the specifics of August’s “punishment” or “consequences” might be. “Consequences” can be him living with the crushing knowledge of how deeply he hurt Wilhelm and Simon and Sara and Felice for the rest of his life, and trying to move forward in a different way from now on knowing he can never undo the past. “Punishment” can be August becoming king but being completely unable to change his ways and connect with other humans and feel any sense of agency in his life. There are multiple ways to address his arc—whether he’s awful or whether he’s willing to atone—that don’t rely on the legal system providing narrative catharsis all by itself, and frankly I’d prefer that it didn’t. (There’s a longer reason why but I feel like I keep linking my restorative justice post.)
To sum up… if these characters’ arcs go in a really tragic direction, I hope people don’t gloat and go “I knew they were terrible all along, unlike those other fans.” And if they go in a more positive directions, I hope we don’t hear the chorus of “they didn’t deserve it!” even if that arc is beautifully, complexly, and compellingly written. (Here are my thoughts on the way fandoms use the word deserve, by the way. It seems I have written about this before and am just becoming a parody of myself at this point.)

honestly all the hotd writers did with alicent was shift her and aegon's story up one generation to her and her dad, changing otto into the parent we see manipulating his reluctant children into danger out of greed and ambition. Show alicent has her back against the wall already and is worsening a situation that was already bad, and her relationship with aegon is only a weak echo of her own story, a narrative aftershock. Book alicent's ruthless ambition borders on hubris and its she who decides to make her children pawns and aegon who is forced to maneuver and see things from the limited place she's backed him into. This changes the inner push for all the Greens' actions from a full blown insider actively plotting a usurpation from within the center of Targaryen power and dealing with the results of her own actions, to a reluctant middle man with her reigns held by a grey eminence, suffering the consequences of other people's scheming and able to consider herself ill used by all sides and genuinely tragic when hurt. Show aegon is left to be just sort of a putz, narratively and hierarchically unnecessary, just a physical reminder of his mother's lack of choice and an extension of her in basically every plot avenue. Instead of an agent for her own ambition alicent is the employee who gets yelled at, and aegon merely the dog she kicks in response. Idk I find that incredibly disappointing, especially considering how the original skews the familiar gender/parent dynamic and the show just puts it back. (Let's not even get into the decision that Criston Cole needed to have sympathetic reasons for planning a usurpation, or that they should hinge on being a minority or getting "manipulated" by a teenage girl.)
I think the fully "women's wrongs" unabashedly proud, greedy, evil-First-Lady-esque alicent giving birth to and then leading to their deaths all of her children for her own political gain, and working with a patriarchal framework to get herself power, then stripping it from the rightful heir and condemning her gender to nothing but indirect, manipulated power ever after in the process, hand-in-hand with her power hungry and ammoral "work husband," and aegon as the target and tool for her ambitions consumed by her and subsumed into her until he loses his mind, his body, and eventually his life as the result of her plans is just so much more interesting and satisfying.
Like post-Dance book alicent will have to live out the rest of her life knowing she sacrificed her family, cheated another woman, and burned the world to try and win and then only managed to not-lose, and we don't even know if she will feel remorse for her actions or just annoyance that things didn't turn out how she expected. Show alicent on the other hand will end up exactly as she started, with things "happening" to her and her behaving badly in response. I consider that a huge fucking downgrade and much less satisfying, and getting a toxic lesbian ship out of it is not enough to placate me.

Ofmd season 2 episode 6 spoilers!!
The way they showed Ed and Stede's first time was so interesting to me. First of all, it happened directly after Stede killed someone for the first time, so automatically, Stede was in a very strange and vulnerable headspace. And that's not to say he was taken advantage of--he very much initiated it--but it happened while both of their identities were up in the air. Stede was adjusting to being an *actual* killer, while Ed had just apologized earlier for shooting Izzys leg.
And then we see Ed sitting on the bed, still fully clothed in leather while a shirtless Stede closes the curtains. And what interests me the most is that we don't even see his face. All we see is Ed looking up from the bed, and Stede looming close to the camera, mirroring the way that Blackbeard was first introduced to the show--facing away from the camera and smoking a pipe, obscured with power and mystery. The fact that their first time co-occurred with such a dramatic shift in dynamics is a little concerning but I have total faith that they will *eventually* talk their shit out).
I don't fully believe Ed when he said that night was a mistake. I do believe he has commitment issues like a bitch, and when Stede started to become more like him, he got scared. We can see him pulling away, sitting in the corner of Spanish Jackie's as Stede revels in his infamy. He wants to truly make amends to the people he's hurt and traumatized, and he can't do that if he's with someone who's drinking, and making people walk the plank, and lighting people on fire.
And it's not because Stede is evil--sure he's a bitch, and occasionally ends a life or two, but that's not who he truly is--its who he's trying to be. A murderer, not a bitch--cause he is a bitch, but he's trying to be a murderer, because his whole life he's been bullied and mocked for not being manly enough. For not being a good husband, for being sensitive and soft, and well, gay. And Ed doesn't understand that this is why he wants to be like him, like Blackbeard (because they haven't fucking talked about it), because for Ed, being Blackbeard ruined his life. It nearly ended it (and others) and he doesn't want Stede to fall down the same path.
So yeah, Ed decides to become a fisherman, because like he said, he has no idea who he is. He still has so much healing to do, so many wrongs to right, and it's just so fucking tragic that now is the time when they need each other the most, but they're moving so rapidly in opposite directions, and neither of them know how to communicate it.
I think Anne and Mary were right--they are fucking 14 year old boys. I mean, Stede literally called Ed a coward for leaving instead of chasing after him. But they're not going to turn out like them. Ed and Stede are going to grow up, and they're going to talk, and they're going to heal each other's scars instead of causing each other more. They're going to learn how to commit to each other and stay even when things get hard or scary. (David Jenkins please for the love of all that is holy let them better each other and also fuck again but after they come to terms with who they are and want to be)
Edit: actually, hot take, but I think them having sex actually was a mistake. And yeah, Ed left instead of talking about it, but still. Their relationship is still so new and unstable, and I wish they waited until they were in a more grounded place. I wish they would have reckoned with their opposing paths before doing something so intimate and vulnerable, but I have a feeling they're going to reckon with it by the end of the season.
Ed asked Stede to go slow for a reason. And yeah, they both consented, which is more important than anything, but damn, it happened so fucking fast. I mean, they are gay, so. (David Jenkins I am in your walls please make Ed and Stede practice healthy sexuality and communicate about their life goals so they can prevent further miscommunication and heartbreak)

YouTube links: Tchaikovsky 6, Mahler 1
Comments:
Mahler 1
cmon there's evil frere jacque in this symphony it's the best thing ever
The beginning is so beautiful… and very reminiscent of the Star Trek intro!
It's SO MUCH. The first two movements are gorgeous. Putting minor key "are you sleeping brother john" and then klezmer wedding music in the middle of it is the funniest thing anyone's ever done AND THEN CYMBAL CRASH an absolute deluge of sound and the most epic f***ing music ever (Wagner can go eat his socks). You have to love it.
Tumblr media
Tchaikovsky 6
Everyone bangs on about the 4th movement but it's the 3rd movement that really hits
tchaik 6 is what i would listen to if i had an hour to live
the 5/4 movement of the tchaik lives rent free in my mind and i think about it every day
It’s beyond gorgeous. The melodies soar, the orchestra swells, and you just need to lie down for a while after listening to it. It’s Romanticism at its zenith. You want to weep and sigh, and it’s impossible to listen to it without literally feeling something.
Symphony No. 6, titled “Pathétique”, was Tchaikovsky’s final symphony. It is an intensely emotional piece, and to many scholars demonstrates the emotional turmoil that characterized much of Tchaikovsky’s life. He died about a week after its premiere, a fact which leads many scholars to debate about whether the content of the piece itself reflects the possibility that he may have committed suicide. The title itself is often translated to mean “impassioned suffering”, although this was most likely a later addition by Modest and not actually part of Tchaikovsky’s vision. Given these facts, many scholars interpret this piece to be about death and suffering. However, this piece can also be seen to represent life and all its contrasting moments. This interpretation is more holistic and inclusive of all of the moments captured in this piece, and also serves to break down the common narrative of Tchaikovsky as a tragic figure.
More comments about Tchaikovsky 6 below the cut (length warning):
Scholarship surrounding Tchaikovsky’s music tends to focus heavily on the ways his confliction over his homoerotic desires appears in his writing. However, his personal letters reveal a much more balanced understanding of himself that goes beyond the common narrative. In one letter written to Modest describing a new relationship with another man, he writes: “I awoke today with a feeling of unknown happiness and with a complete absence of that emotional sobriety that used to make me repent in the morning for having gone too far the day before.” Many of the letters he wrote regarding his relationships demonstrate no shame and no anguish beyond what can be expected of a man living in a homophobic society. It is important to take this information into account when listening to a piece such as this one that has been discussed so frequently, and to understand it beyond the turmoil and strife that it is seen to represent. Like many of Tchaikovsky’s works, this symphony displays a range of human emotions. It is not only representative of tragedy and “impassioned suffering”; it is a depiction of what it is like to live. It is also interesting to note that this piece is used as a signifier of queer desire in the novel "Maurice" by E.M. Forster, a novel also notable for its radical portrayal of a queer man who gets a happy ending. Much to think about there.
The first movement begins with a lone bassoon soloist playing a plaintive minor melody, which later comes back in the strings. As the movement progresses, it grows in intensity and texture. More instruments are added, and the music becomes more frantic, building and building towards the dramatic trumpet fanfare. Throughout this piece, Tchaikovsky continues to make significant use of contrasting dynamics and melodies, reflecting the emotions he hopes to convey through the music. Dramatic, tumultuous sections are interspersed with pastoral woodwind melodies, and the angry brass fanfares give way to a quiet ending.
The second movement is reminiscent of a waltz, and uses the strings and woodwinds more than the brass to achieve its floating melodies. The dynamics ebb and flow to build tension, but this movement never reaches the same levels of anguish that the previous movement does. Tchaikovsky makes use of pizzicato in the strings to convey a lighter, more cheerful mood, and features the upper woodwinds prominently. He also repeats themes frequently, giving the audience something familiar to listen out for as the movement progresses.
The third movement begins with frantic energy in the strings and woodwinds. As more instruments join the rush of music, the underlying eight note accompaniment does not let up, continuing the vivacious beginning through the whole movement. Instruments pass the melodies between each other and engage in conversations across the orchestra. Like the first movement, the brass play a prominent role in creating dramatic climaxes in the music, as well as supporting the march-like conclusion. Conductor Myung-Whun Chung describes the deceptively dramatic ending as, “one of the greatest, most thrilling, but most empty of victories in musical history,” observing that this movement has the energetic finality of a final movement. The reversal of having the true finale be a slower movement represents a shift away from the “Beethovian model of light over darkness” common in most other symphonies of this time period.
As mentioned before, ending on a movement with a slow tempo was a significant shift away from the standard of the time. This innovation inspired many other future composers to use the same technique, most notably Mahler in his Ninth Symphony. The quiet beginning builds up towards a chaotic rush of fast runs throughout the orchestra, only to stop abruptly and continue in halting, cautious bursts of melody. The movement continues with this cycle of rushing up to a climax and backing away as the movement progresses. Tchaikovsky highlights the horns in this movement, giving them both angry, blaring notes which cut through the string melodies and the flowing, lyrical lines that are passed throughout the orchestra. As the piece ends, the instruments fall away until all that is left are steady repeated notes in the basses, bringing this lament of a movement to an understated close.

Your fic has taken over my brain, so I decided to list everything I love about it!
First, and most importantly, the characterization. You’ve captured each character’s essence in dialogue and description. Everyone behaves naturally, as they would in the show, and makes independent choices (ie Soos and Melody starting an anime club with McGucket, and Pacific working to support her alpacas). No matter how small a role they play, everyone has their own emotional conflict. This makes every character feel like a real person who exists outside of the main POV.
Second, the tone. It balances absurd humor and seriousness perfectly. I’ve experienced emotional whiplash multiple times (in a good way!). Plus, I love the scene breaks for flashbacks and time skips; they make it feel like I’m watching an actual episode of Gravity Falls!
Third, everything is set up well in advance. When revelations unfold, they feel connected to previous events. Nothing comes out of the blue, and every detail is important! I can connect the dots and theorize about each clue that comes up. And when something appears multiple times, I can be sure that a Chekhov’s Gun is in the works.
Next on the list is relationships: characters have dynamic interactions with each other, and everything is loaded with subtext. It’s fun to theorize about where things will go next. Because the characterizations are spot-on, every person sees things a little differently, and it shows in their interactions. Bill, especially, has an alien worldview, and his relationships with others are fascinating!
This leads to your portrayal of Bill and his development. I could write a whole essay about this specifically! Bill is a study in dichotomy: he can act as both a flat, two-dimensional villain and a tragic character. The way you write him captures all of this. He is infuriating and hilarious, sinister and pitiful, evil and sympathetic. His intelligence and ego are beautifully contrasted by his sheer stupidity.
Bill starts as such an awful person, and your fic reflects this. His development is slow, but interwoven with hints of positive change. The latest chapter shows he’s growing to appreciate Mabel and her kindness. I can see how eventually, he grows to become a better person.
Man, I wish this was an actual English assignment. I could write about this for hours! Anyways, thanks so much for pouring your heart into this fic. It’s truly amazing, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next!
holy shit 😭😭😭 Thank you so MUCH!! This means so much to me to hear. I wish I could think of more to say but it would probably be a whole page of heart emojis lmao. This is gonna fuel my writing for the rest of the day
(Credit where credit's due: Soos, Melody, and Fiddleford's anime club is @astro-b-o-y-d's idea, and I loved it so much I DMed him like "this is brilliant, could I use it too plz?" Because I thought the same thing, yeah that's absolutely something they would do together off screen.)

My top 10 favorite JJK ships
10 - Hanami X Jogo
That's kind of dumb, but I think that Juju Stroll is really cute where the curses are schoolgirls and Hanami is sad about her destroyed garden so Jogo appears to apologize. That was really funny and cute. Hanami is my favorite curse.
Tumblr media
9 - Mai X Takada
That's also thanks to that Juju Strol. I don't have much fog on it. I just like it and if you don't like it, fight me (but be kind, because I'm very emotional).
Tumblr media
8 - Geto X Me
Sorry Satoru, but that man is mine.
Tumblr media
7 - Yuki X Choso
I don't even remember them in the manga, but the arts are really good. I like Yuki and I like Choso. Why not make them make out? I make the rules.
Tumblr media
6 - Hakari X Kirara
What can I say? They are so cute together! And no matter what you think, it's somehow always going to be gay. GG made sure to make this as fruity as possible. I love Kirara and I love Hakari and their relationship is so cute. They have to teach these other couples how to have a relationship that doesn't end with one of them dying/sacrificing.
Tumblr media
5 - Miwa X Kokichi
These two are so sad and cute at the same time. (spoiler) As strange as it may seem, Kokichi's death was the one that moved me the most and took me by surprise. I had already gone to the manga knowing what would happen with Nobara and Nanami, but I didn't expect all that Kokichi stuff. It made me really sad. And his passion for Miwa moved me.
Tumblr media
4 - Yuta X Maki
Honestly, as much as I ship more Nobamaki, I'm not opposed to this ship. Yuta and Maki have a good dynamic in the manga and they kind of match each other a lot. Yuta is a sweetheart and Maki is a queen. They deserve each other and I will be very happy if they finish the manga together.
Tumblr media
TOP 3!!!!
3 - Nobara X Maki
They are perfect queens and deserve each other!!!! Simply this. I love their interactions in the anime, how Nobara looks like a happy puppy when she sees Maki, and how Maki really enjoys her company. Both are powerful, beautiful and evil. They really deserve each other!!!!!!
Tumblr media
2 - Satoru X Suguru
Ah, Satosugu. I was swept into this tide of pain, regret and sadness before I even read the manga (I already had images saved of the two of them without even understanding what's going on, impressive). They became the most tragic couple and equally fun to follow. Their relationship was so well built that it's almost impossible not to feel sad. Besides, I completely understand Satoru. Suguru is too hot for this world :,(
Tumblr media
1 - Yuji X Megumi
Nobody is surprised. It was these bitches that dragged me to JJK so they have to be in my top 1. I like grumpyxsunshine relationships with a good dash of angst so they were perfect for me. Everything about them is perfect and so good to go with it. The amount of fanfic I've read and fanart I've saved is obscene. GG needs to give them both a happy ending, otherwise I'm going to rip that eye out of his stupid cat face.
Tumblr media
Honorable mentions:
_ Toji X Mamagumi _ Yuta X Inumaki _ Sukuna X Uraume _ Sukuna X Megumi (One-sided) _ Satoru X Nanami _ Shoko X Utahime _ Nanami X Haibara

Writing Year Wrapped
Thank you for the tag @eilinelsghost - what a lovely idea!
3 Favourite Fics You've Written This Year
the fairest stars (T, 78k, in progress). So much of myself has gone into this fic since I started writing it all the way back in February. I love all the characters (Maedhros and Maglor my beloveds!!), I love how much it's taught me about plot and structure and evil cliffhangers, and I love sharing it with all my wonderful kind enthusiastic readers!
Ilimbë (T, 15k, complete). This was a new venture for me, both genre and ship-wise, but it was just so much FUN. I like writing things that make me feel clever, and this is probably my most unabashedly pretentious fic. But also baby Fëanor is everything to me now.
in the breaking (G, 2k, complete). I used to call this my best m&m fic, although tfs is probably my best m&m fic. But in the breaking is still one of my favourite explorations of their tragic tender codependent dynamic.
3 Fics That Stretched You the Most
Inflection (G, 10k, complete). This one was SO hard to write - getting the first draft out was very much blood, sweat and tears. The nuances of the kidnap fam dynamic are very hard to get right, balancing the canonical love with Elrond and Elros' genuine trauma. I'm still not entirely sure I got it quite to my satisfaction, but I'm pleased with the final result all the same.
the fairest stars. Yes I'm listing it twice. I'm very fond of tfs, but plotting it out can be SO hard sometimes (which is one of the reasons why part 31 is taking a while to write). I just counted and there are TEN separate plot threads to keep track of at the moment, which is... a Lot.
the salt of the sea (E, 2k, complete). Shoutout to my first proper smut! Definitely a new venture for me (I hadn't written this pairing before, either). People were very kind about it, though.
3 Favourite Lines You've Written
Maedhros has never loved anyone without making of them a god – it is all tangled together in his mind, worship with affection, ardour with idolatry. (tfs, part 29)
To love Maedhros, he has long known, is to grieve him. (tfs, part 22)
Fëanor had never been kissed before. It took him a moment to respond, but then he found he was kissing Nerdanel back and it was the easiest, most familiar thing in the world; her messy curls were brushing his face and one of her strong sure hands had travelled down to rest against the small of his back and there was nothing that had ever been more real than the warmth of her pressed against him; she was certainty itself, as solid as marble, no crafted thing to be shaped and changed, but a maker and a preserver and a promise of forever; and her mouth against his was hot and sweet and golden as the taste of a Laurelin-ripened peach. (Ilimbë)
3 Characters You Enjoyed Writing (that surprised you)
Lúthien! I didn't have many thoughts about her before starting tfs, but she's one of my favourite characters in it now, and so essential to the themes of the story.
Fëanor was a struggle to wrap my head around initially: in my opinion one of the biggest flaws of all those that follow, for example, is the way Fëanor only appears at the edges of the narrative, when I could really have stood to flesh his relationship with Fingolfin out a lot more. Writing Ilimbë really helped me gain a much better understanding of what makes him tick, which was very satisfying, and I do think his characterisation is one of the biggest strengths of that fic.
gonna cheat slightly for the third one and say all my little baby OCs from the glassmaker! OC-centric fic isn't something I'd tried before, but I'm very fond of them now.
3 Unexpected Inspirations
Maedhros' hair in in the breaking is this whole important thematic thing, but the truth is. I also have very long and silky hair and it is a PAIN to deal with. You cannot picture the number of times I have sat on my bed at 1am furiously yanking a hairbrush through it and gone "DID it take long hours to brush out to smoothness again? you fucking bet." Sadly I do not have a codependently devoted sibling to tenderly brush my hair for me, so I have to do it myself.
tfs was initally inspired by some tumblr discourse about Beren and Lúthien's motivations in stealing the Silmaril! which I think is kind of neat. It strikes me as very indicative of the collaborative nature of fandom: a couple of people have a debate, and then someone else goes away and writes fic about it, and then people draw art of the fic... and on the cycle goes.
an ancient song is a very small little ficlet, but it was also inspired by some tags on a tumblr post! Always fun when that happens.
3 WIPs You're Excited About in the Upcoming Year
Ooh, now I feel like I'm committing to having these finished in the next year...
The Unburied: the longfic I am very slowly working on, and managed to put 20k words towards in November. It follows Fingon as he crosses the Helcaraxë and Maglor as he rules in Mithrim, ending with the first rising of the Sun. I am excited about this fic, but it's an ambitious project and very challenging! Also my brain can't really handle working on two different longfics at once, so it's on the backburner until tfs is finished, and who knows when that will be tbh.
boats against the current: another rather old WIP that is complicated and difficult to plot out. This one is the "Maedhros doesn't swear the Oath" AU. Still very attached to the idea! Maybe I'll get somewhere with it soon.
sore must be the storm: my shortest WIP! Surely I can sit down and finish it in the next few weeks (I have been saying, for months). Just some (messy and complicated) russingon after Fingolfin's death.
