One easy way to confirm Einstein’s theory is to use the GPS system on your cell phone. The GPS system consists of thirty-one satellites orbiting the Earth. At any time, your cell phone can receive signals from three of them. Each of these three satellites is moving in a slightly different trajectory and angle. The computer in your cell phone then analyzes this data from the three satellites and triangulates your precise position. The GPS system is so accurate that it has to take tiny corrections from both special and general relativity into account. Since the satellites are moving at roughly 17,000 miles per hour, a clock in the GPS satellites beats slightly slower those than on Earth due to special relativity, which states that higher speeds result in slower time—the phenomenon demonstrated in Einstein’s thought experiment of outracing a light beam. But since gravity is weaker the farther you move into outer space, time actually speeds up a bit due to general relativity, which states that space-time can be warped by gravitational pull—the weaker the gravitational pull, the faster time moves. This means that special and general relativity work in opposite directions, with special relativity causing the signals to slow down, while general relativity causes the signals to speed up. Your cell phone then factors in both competing effects and tells you precisely where you are located. So without special and general relativity working in tandem, you would be lost.

Today's nameplate says 溝渕, usually Mizobuchi, possibly Mizofuchi. It combines two characters that we covered at the start of this blog but haven't seen in quite a while!

溝 means gutter, ditch, sewer, or drain (or, in math, 10³² but. Heaven forfend any of us ever have to know that). It's read みぞ or コウ.

This is another case where the left component, the water radical 氵, hints at the meaning, and the right at the on-yomi. Basically any kanji with a 冓* shares the reading コウ: for example, 構 (posture, structure, or appearance), 講 (lecture or club), 購 (subscription or purchase), or the rarer 媾 (association or intimacy).

渕 means edge. It's usually read ふち but can also be かた.い, はなわ, エン, カク, or コウ.

*The character 冓 itself isn't really used in Japanese anymore, but its original meaning is inner palace or to put together. Like 構, it's read かま.える or コウ.

〜新人公演35期紹介〜

一番乗り。って書こうとしたらハムに先を越された上に、ハムが中々エグいもん書いてるので書き直そうか迷ってしまいました。でも書き直す時間は無いのでこのまま真面目紹介しておきます。く、悔しい...。

久しぶりに古墳に行きたいです。そこには街を一望できる綺麗な景色があります。私の心の基地です。心身回復したい誰かがいたら一緒に来たい場所です。明日か明後日の夜にでも行って一度リフレッシュしてきましょうかね〜

突然掃除を始めたり、キャッチボールし始めたりするところ。無邪気なところ。毎日聴きたくなるラジオパーソナリティみたいな声。あろハムは本当に声がいい。毎日、朝起こしてほしい。ライブの感想、また聞かせてね。

◆海泥波波美

ときたま感じるあたたかい何か。たまに羽毛布団くらい柔らかくなっていることがある語尾。カス!って言う時の明るい声。人生の先輩は色々苦労してきたみたい。でも、夜は寝れなくても寝るべし。アサギがいっぱい寝て不幸になる人はいないから。

子供のときの、新しく買ってもらったDSのカセットみたいな、わくわくさせてくる一面。穏やかな気持ちになれる波長の声。苔丸は良いところが詰まりすぎていて何から話せばいいのかわからない。そんな苔丸が照明に来てくれて、嬉しくて、やる気が出たよ。

いつだって優しい善人。苔丸の声で世界がつくられる。

◆衿君

口を開いて、そこから音が出た瞬間に大爆発する魅力。楽しみ始めたら誰も止められないところ。リュックに付いているストラップが可愛いところ。もっとエリックを知りたい気持ちめちゃくちゃあります。だって絶対面白いんだもん。

めちゃくちゃ頼りになる照明仲間2。エリックは舞台に立つだけでかっこいい。

◆冊まいむ

努力をして、それを全然やめない強さ。しんどいときでも、底にある飄々とした芯がなんとなく見えるところ。冊まいむって良いね。「も」は解雇されたのかな？ちょっと可哀想。でも、「む」がきっと良い子なんだろうね。

いつも美味しそうなお弁当を作る職人。みそかの天然は可愛さを倍増させてる。

◆ミル鍋

いつか人差し指を優しく突き刺してみたいほっぺた。なんかもう、言葉を失ってしまうくらい可愛い一瞬。みんなにお菓子を配っているときの顔。堂々としているゆにを見ると、すごいなぁって惚れ惚れしちゃう。どうしてそんなにかっこいいんですか？

笑顔かわいいランキングがあればきっと殿堂入り。ゆにはイケメンか��可愛い。

◆大福小餅

いつ見てもさらさらで、心が透き通っていることを具現化している髪。笑顔。たまに、眠すぎて、頭がカクってなっちゃってるところ。しっかり者で優しいこふくがいてくれることで、みんなの雰囲気が保たれている。ありがとう。

ふわっふわなのにしっかりしている舞監。こふくのこふくじゃないシーンが大好き。

◆中森ダリア

自分をもっているところ。周りを近づけないんじゃなくて、周りの人も巻き込んでその場ごと近づけなくするほどのオーラ。ゆったりした喋り。何がとはまだ言えないけど、あれが上手すぎて好き。あれも、けっこう面白いことになってて好き。

身近にいてくれるアイドル。ひらりはスーパーオールラウンダーガール。

◆帝京魂

なんだか、見ているだけで満足できる雰囲気。人間観察したくなる不思議さを持ち合わせている。擦られ続けているしゃーない。愛され続けているしゃーない。最近本家聞いてないから聞きたい。部署が全然被ってなくてあんまり喋ったことがないので密かに悲しい。

よく通る声の低さで発声が良すぎる。コンちゃんのキャラ全部いい味出てる。

◆鴨兎春

かっこいいところ。爪の垢を煎じて飲みたいほどのセンス。落ち着いて作業しているときの頼れる姉御感。落ち着いていないときの大阪すぎる言動。いつもおしゃんな服。らびは困ったら助けてくれるイケメンです。ちゃんと大阪人として面白いところを見習いたい。

みんなの舞美ネキ。らびの成長は止まる気配がない。

◆黒井白子

変わらず揺るがず秘めている何か。暴れ回る手足。聞くと、いいなぁ、ってなる訛り。堂々と立っているところ。大好きなものを愛しているところ。誰よりも真剣で誰よりも色々犠牲にしている。私たちはみんな相も変わらず白子のこと好きだから心配しないでね。

人を鼓舞する情熱の持ち主。白子が納得出来れば雨は降らない。

◆しょこら

大きな背中。丁寧な話し方。独特の雰囲気。こらしょの舞台上の雰囲気は、唯一無二って感じがしてすごく好き。なんやかんやどうにかする力を持っている。私にはできないことをしている。普通にすごいことだよ、それ。

ゆったりした波長の持ち主。こらしょの存在感は凄まじい。

私は35期のことが好きです。好きというのは押しつけていいものなのか今の私にはわかりませんが、今の私はみんなに伝えたいらしいです。口でも文字でも、言えないことが多くて困っちゃいますね。面と向かって言えないことを文字にするのは、悪いことだったら最悪ですが、良いことだったら最高です。それでもやっぱり、声になって耳に届いて響くのが1番ですけどね。

Pictophonetic: 片 indicates the sound (pinyin piàn | pian4 ),氵/ 水(water) indicates the meaning

This one is fun! It started off as... ...Pictographic: A pool of water with lines to mark the deep part

Then, presumably due to a lack of clarity, variations popped up with clearer marked deep parts as well as an early version of the 水 water radical on the left

Which leads us to the final clarification stage - a pictophonetic element added in with 片 that sounds similar, put together with 爿 to make it resemble the original pictograph making the kanji 𣶒. The water radical 氵 was added on later.

Chapter 19: The Invincible General

帝国軍襲来の知らせに、解放軍の動きが慌ただしくなった。 The Liberation Army rushed to respond to the news of the Imperial Army’s invasion.

ティルたちは炎上した城から吟遊詩人のカシオス、画家のイワノフを救出すると、すぐさま軍をまとめて出発した。 Tir and the others rescued a minstrel named Kasios and a painter called Ivanov from the ruined castle and then the army immediately began marching away.

今ある情報は居城から駆けつけたスタリオンがもたらしたもののみで、それによれば帝国軍は陸路を取り、帝都のあるアールス地方からクワバの城塞を通過して南下してくるということだった。 The only information they had to go on was what Stallion brought them from headquarters. According to him, the Imperial Army was traveling overland through the Arus region—home to the capital—and was headed south. They would soon pass through the Kwaba Fortress.

拠点としているガランの関所を目指して軍を進めている間に、マッシュは断続的に斥候を出し、帝国軍の様子を細かく探った。 While moving their troops back to the Garan checkpoint, Mathiu had also been intermittently sending out scouts to collect detailed information on the Imperial Army’s every move.

それが誰の軍かはまだ判明していなかったが、ティルの胸中は穏やかではなかった。 They had not yet reported back on who was leading the force in question, but this gave Tir no peace of mind.

ソニア・シューレンの水軍なら陸路は取らない。 Sonya Shulen’s Imperial Navy forces would never take a land route.

カシム・ハジルの部隊ならトラン湖の西を回り、モラビア城のあるセナン地方とクナン地方を結ぶ北の関所を通過してくるはずだ。 And if it were Kasim Hazil’s army, they would come in from the west of Lake Toran through the northern checkpoint that connects the Kunan region with the Senan region, where Kasim’s Moravia castle is located.

となれば、その帝国軍は陛下の率いる帝国中央軍第一軍か、父テオの率いる第三軍ーー。 Which means that this Imperial force on the move is either the first regiment, led by His Majesty himself from the central empire, or it’s the third regiment… led by my father, Teo McDohl.

不安を抱えながら草原を進むうちに、ガランの関所が見える位罰に来た。 Filled with anxiety, they rode across the plains until they were in sight of the checkpoint.

すると関所から、マッシュが最初に出した斥候が馬を飛ばしてきた。 A scout immediately came galloping out on horseback. Mathiu was the first to meet him.

「どうだ？帝国軍の様子は？」マッシュの問いに、 He hailed the scout. “What news of the Imperial Army?”

斥候は馬を寄せ、かしこまって答える。 The scout rode to Mathiu and saluted.

「はっ、敵軍はクワバの城塞を通過した後、セイカを制圧し、現在はカクの町近辺を進んでいます。それで、ティル様…．」 “Sir! The Imperial Army passed through the Kwaba Fortress and has taken control of Seika. They are now nearing the town of Kaku. Also, Lord Tir…”

斥候がティルに向き直った。 He turned to Tir.

ティルはどきりとしたが、心を落ち着けてから言う。「どうした？」 Tir’s heart pounded in his chest, but he composed himself and replied calmly. “What is it?”

「私馬を走らせているさなかに、ティル様に用があるという者に会いましたので連れて参りました。関所の広間て待たせてありますがいかがなさいますか？」 “One of the reasons I rode here so quickly is because there is a visitor who has come to see you on urgent business. We asked her to await you in the checkpoint meeting hall. Would you like to meet with her, m’lord?”

「ふむ……、何者だ……？」訝しげに言ったマッシュに、斥候が答える。 “Hmm… a visitor? Who could that be?” wondered Mathiu aloud.

「その者はロッカクの里のカスミと名乗っております。北方からテオ・マクドールの軍が南下する際、ロッカクの里を襲撃したので救いを求めに参ったと……」 “She is called Kasumi,” answered the scout, “and she hails from the hamlet of Rokkaku. When Teo McDohl’s amy traveled from the north to the south, they launched a surprise attack on Rokkaku, so she came to request assistance from the Liberation Army.”

「な…、なんだって… ？！」思わずティルが叫んだ。 “Wh-what?!” cried Tir in complete shock.

しかしマッシュは冷静だった。 Mathiu, however, was as calm and composed as ever.

「なるほど……。忍びの者が集まるロッカクの隠れ里も、長らく帝国に抵抗を続けていたと聞いている。 “I see… the hidden village Rokkaku is a place where ninja gather and I have heard they have long resisted the Empire.

それは十分にあり得ることだ。すぐに行くと伝えてくれ」 That alone is reason enough. Please tell her we will meet with her shortly.”

「はっ、わかりました」 “Yes, sir!”
