I feel like to ignore the fact that the government suppresses the Uyghur language in schools (just like the English did to the welsh, and the canadians did to the first nations) is pretty bad
Hate to break the illusion, but they do actually teach the Uyghur language in schools. Just like how Tibeten is taught in Tibet, Mongolian in Inner Mongolia, Korean in Yanbian, and etc.. Minority languages are taught similar to how you would take language classes in the united states except starting much sooner. The video on visiting a vocational center literally showed a class in Uyghur. This is a resolution on the expansion of minority bilingual education in Xinjiang between 2010 and 2020. This is a brief article on the history of bilingual education in Xinjiang. Uyghur is a nationally recognized language and is printed on signs in public and on the money and government panels are done in both languages, mandarin and Uyghur.

The Cory Doctorow Humble Bundle
Tumblr media
I'm on tour with my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me in TUCSON (Mar 9-10), then San Francisco (Mar 13), Anaheim, and more!
Tumblr media
It's been 21 years and 29 days since Tor Books published my first novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. In the years since, Tor has published every one of my novels, sending me around the USA and Canada to talk about them. Now, they've teamed up with Humble Bundle to sell 18 of my ebooks on a name-your-price basis, with part of the proceeds going to benefit EFF:
https://www.humblebundle.com/books/cory-doctorow-novel-collection-tor-books-books
I've been associated with EFF even longer than I've been published by Tor! My first novel came out while I was working EFF's first-ever booth at CES. I split my time between the booth and my motel room, where I paid $0.25/call to dial up to Earthlink's local number and manage the launch-day publicity. Over the years, I've benefited immensely from Tor's editorial and publicity departments, working with brilliant publishing people like Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Patty Garcia, Dot Lin, Laura Etzkorn, Elena Stokes, Sarah Reidy, Lucille Rettino, and of course, Tor founder Tom Doherty.
But I like to think that it was a two-way street. Tor and I have come a long way together on ebooks: most visibly, they allowed me to publish several novels under Creative Commons licenses (my first book was the first ever CC book, coming out just weeks after the licenses themselves launched). As my editor Patrick Nielsen Hayden said at the time, "Ebooks have the worst hours-in-meeting-to-dollars-in-revenue ratio of anything in my publishing career. Why not?"
https://craphound.com/down/download/
Just as important – but less visible – was Tor's willingness to let me insist that all my books be published without DRM, meaning that anything you buy on say, Amazon, can be moved to any reader program if you decide to start getting your ebooks elsewhere. This worked so well that in 2012, Tor became the first major publisher in the world to ban DRM on all its ebooks, flying me, John Scalzi and Charlie Stross to New York City to announce it this at a big, splashy event at Book Expo America:
https://web.archive.org/web/20130512022634/https://tor.com/blogs/2012/06/tor-books-announces-e-book-store-doctorow-scalzi-a-stross-talk-drm-free
Tor's unique status as the sole major DRM-free publisher in the world was well timed! That same year, I curated the very first Humble Ebook Bundle, which was very top-heavy with Tor titles, and raised more than $1,000,000 for the writers, publishers and charities associated with it:
https://web.archive.org/web/20121017215636/http://www.humblebundle.com/
That opened the floodgates to a series of Humble Bundles, tempting other major publishers to dabble with DRM-free, including Simon and Schuster:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-I5QyAfglU
And Harpercollins:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHMLfeCrCrE
Now, 12 years after that inaugural Humble Ebook Bundle, I find myself honored by being the subject of a bundle of my own (it helps that I've written a hell of a lot of books in the intervening years). Included in the bundle are (nearly) all of my Tor novels and novellas: The Lost Cause; "The Canadian Miracle" (a Lost Cause story); Red Team Blues; Radicalized; Walkaway; "Party Discipline" (a Walkaway story); Pirate Cinema; Rapture of the Nerds (with Charlie Stross); For The Win; Makers; Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town; Eastern Standard Tribe, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, Little Brother, Homeland, Attack Surface, and "Lawful Interception" (a Little Brother story).
(The sole exclusion is The Bezzle, which came out two weeks ago and is already a USA Today national bestseller!)
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865878/thebezzle
Also included in the bundle is Poesy the Monster Slayer, my 2020 picture book for the littlies:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781626723627/poesythemonsterslayer
All these books are delivered as DRM-free epub files. The Bundle runs for the next three weeks, and the minimum buy-in is $18 – that's just $1/book (full retail value is $187). Of course, you can name a higher price, and, as with all Humble Bundles, you can adjust the final split to share out the money between me, EFF, and the Humble folks.
Tumblr media
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

In 1946, Argentina introduced twenty beavers (Castor canadensis) to Tierra del Fuego (TdF) to promote the fur industry in a land deemed empty and sterile.
Beavers were brought from Canada by Tom Lamb, [...] known as Mr. North for having expanded the national frontier [...]. In the 1980s, local scientists [...] found that beavers were the main disturbers of sub-Antarctic forests. The fur industry had never been implemented in TdF and [...] beavers had expanded, crossed to Chile, and occupied most of the river streams. The Beavercene resulted in apocalyptic landscapes [...]: modified rivers, flooded lands, and dead native trees that, unlike the Canadian ones, are not resilient to flooding. [...]
At the end of the nineteenth century the state donated lands to Europeans who, in building their farms, also displaced and assassinated the indigenous inhabitants of TdF. With the settlers, livestock and plants also invaded the region, an “ecological imperialism” that displaced native populations. In doing this, eugenic and racializing knowledges mediated the human and nonhuman population politics of TdF.
---
In the 1940s, the Argentinian State nationalized these settlers’ capitals by redistributing their lands. [...] In 1946, the president of the rural association in TdF opened the yearly livestock [conference]: We, settlers and farmers of TdF have lived the evolution of this territory from the times of an absent State. [...] [T]hey allied with their introduced animals, like the Patagonian sheep or the Fuegian beaver. At a time when, after the two world wars, the category of race had become [somewhat] scientifically delegitimized, the enhancement and industrialization of animals enabled the continuation of racializing politics.
In 1946, during the same livestock ceremony in TdF, the military government claimed:
This ceremony represents the patria; it spreads the purification of our races … It is our desire to produce an even more purified and refined race to, directly, achieve the aggrandizement of Argentina.
---
The increasing entanglement between animal breeding and the nation helped to continue the underlying Darwinist logic embedded in population politics. Previous explicit desires to whiten the Argentinian race started to be actualized in other terms. [...]
Settlers had not only legitimated their belonging to TdF by othering the indigenous [people], [...] but also through the idea that indigenous communities had gone extinct after genocide and disease. At that time, the “myth of extinction” helped in the construction of a uniform nation based on erasing difference, as a geography textbook for school students, Historia y Geografía Argentinas, explained in 1952: If in 1852 there were 900,000 inhabitants divided in 90,000 whites, 585,000 mestizos, 90,000 [Indigenous people] and 135,000 [...] Black, a century later there was a 90% of white population out of 18,000,000 inhabitants. (357) [...] [S]tate statistics contributed to the erasure of non-white peoples through the magic of numbers: it is not that they had disappeared, but that they had been statistically exceeded [...]. However, repressed communities never fully disappear.

Good news for animals in captivity in Canada!
Tumblr media
The Jane Goodall act was introduced to the Canadian senate originally in 2020 and again in 2022. It represents some of the strongest legislation for animal protection in the world for species and contains new legal protections for captive big cats, bears, wolves, seals, sea lions, walruses, certain primates, and dangerous reptiles, such as crocodiles and giant pythons. If it passes, the bill will:
Phase out elephant captivity in Canada. Elephants are complex and intelligent animals that require large social groups and often do poorly in captivity, so this would mean an effective end to the practice nation wide.
Ban new captivity at roadside zoos for big cats, bears, wolves, seals, sea lions, walruses, certain primates, and dangerous reptiles. No more private owners profiting off of wild animals kept in unethical conditions!
Require permits for individuals and organizations to acquire or breed big cats and other species.
Create a new designation for Jane Goodall Act ‘animal care organizations,’ including zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. An effective form of accreditation to make it easier to support appropriate care for captive animals.
It would also support action against wildlife trafficking and improving the conditions of animals currently in captivity. Read more about the act here.
As of June 8, 2023 the bill has passed its first vote in the Senate.

No, Iceland is not up to "dirty political tricks" and neither is Bashar Murad
Hey lovely people, spirits, souls, and ghouls of Tumblr! To those of you who don't follow me on TikTok, there's a video I made just yesterday concerning Iceland (the lil Eurovision Country that Could!), Israel, a certain Irish TikTok-er with impressively horrible media literacy, and our dearest friend Bashar Murad. If you're not on TikTok, that's wonderful and dear god you don't need to subject yourself to that app. Instead, I wanted to make a post that explains what's going on, what's being said, and why one (1) Palestinian is not responsible for the aforementioned "dirty" political tricks.
If you're following Eurovision or just Bashar Murad himself, consider giving this a read.
Tumblr media
So let's begin! First: who's calling Bashar Murad/Iceland "dirty"? Where am I getting that word from and why is it in quotes? That's because: it IS a quote! Buck wild, I know. This is a quote from the TikTok account AllThingsAdam.ie, run by the Irish Eurovision...fan? Podcast-haver? Idk, I'm not saying "journalist" because if I wanted to have a laugh, I would just watch the Unicorn edit I made a couple months ago. Did I share that here yet? Just in case, here it is:
Never fails to make me smile. Great edit, Me! Anyway, back on topic: Adam McCallig is a person with a TikTok account that has half a million followers, he has a podcast where he's interviewed Eurovision and NF artists, so he's definitely a "known figure" to a certain point. I can't sit here and say he's some random troll, y'know? So, in a TikTok that has since been deleted from his page, he accuses Iceland of being up to "dirty political Eurovision 2024 tricks." I created a TikTok where I briefly show this video, and here's a link to that! You can watch that for my condensed version of everything I'm talking about here, but this Tumblr post is for those who like reading what I have to say in longer form. Here's that video:
Since Adam's video is now "gone," I will do my best and summarize what he stated with whatever journalistic integrity I have. First: you hear him open the video with the word "dirty." So no one can say I'm putting words in his mouth -- no no, these are lifted from the source material, honey. Next, he goes on to claim that Bashar "has no connection to Iceland whatsoever." As much as Adam wants this to be true, it just...isn't?? Like, let's ignore Bashar's longtime collaborations with HATARI. Instead, let's look at him literally performing on the Songvakeppnin stage in the 2020 NF season:
youtube
Additionally, the claim "Bashar has no connection to Iceland" rings very hollow not only when we know this claim is false, but it's not one Adam brings up about the many artists trying to represent a country other than their own in the 2024 NF season. Adam says he "knows that countries can let artists from whatever country represent them," but he hasn't made any videos about Marcus & Martinus (Norwegian) competing in Sweden's National Final. Tali (Israeli-born) is representing Luxembourg this year, and MEGARA (Spanish) are representing San Marino. "Foreign" artists representing any country in ESC is FAR from new, and if it were a punishable offense, Celine Dion would just have to settle for being Canadian.
However, as soon as Bashar Murad takes the stage and the colors of the Palestinian flag are visible, Adam is ready to take to TikTok and say "dirty political tricks" are at play -- before deleting it later, like I mentioned. In fact, not only did he delete it! Mere hours before writing this post, I used my second TT account to peep his page and he posted a video saying "One of these four songs should represent Iceland in Eurovision!" and showed snippets of four songs competing in the Icelandic NF Grand Finale, which takes place on Saturday the 2nd of March. However: there aren't four songs competing to win for Iceland. There's five. Which four did he show? The fours songs that AREN'T Bashar Murad. And yet, he's the one being dirty in all this? Adam, sweetie, the dirty call is coming from inside the dirty house.
Now, you might wonder if Adam has kept this kind of energy when talking about Israel's Eurovision participation, which at time of writing is still very much up in the air. But thing is: he doesn't. At least, not really. Adam has posted a video condemning the alleged song that Israel is trying to submit to Eurovision titled "October Rain." I won't go too deep into that -- please follow @/IsraelBreaksRules on Twitter for more details on this!! But basically, what Adam is attempting to do is play some sort of "political centrist" take on Eurovision, while simultaneously trying to say "Keep politics OUT of Eurovision!!" And at the end of his deleted video, Adam claimed that while "what happened in Gaza is terrible," Iceland is just as guilty for playing political tricks as Israel might be, and Bashar Murad's participation is just as bad.
Two things wrong with that statement, Adam. One: It's not what "happened" in Gaza. It's not past tense. It's on-going. It hasn't stopped. That's actually -- believe it or not -- WHY WE'RE STILL HERE. And two: JUST AS BAD?? REALLY??
If you watched my TikTok response that I shared the link to, you'll have seen the evidence I shared. But I wanna share them again just so you all can clearly see how the "political tricks" at play this year are not on the part of Iceland, nor would they be "just as bad." Where do we begin? Maybe we could begin with the fact that "Wild West," Bashar's song, has been spammed with negative reviews by anti-Palestinian ESC fans. This is mathematically observable when you notice "Wild West" has roughly THREE TIMES as many reviews as the other Icelandic NF songs on EurovisionWorld.com. You can check them out here and see the numbers yourself.
But it doesn't stop at bad reviews. Israeli ESC fans have begun a campaign to mass vote against Bashar, specifically for Hera Bjork, one of the four other competitors in Iceland's final on Saturday. This is really funny to me though because if Bashar doesn't win, it should totally be Sigga Ozk, right? GO TIFFANY!!! Anyway, I digress. A link to an article covering this voting campaign can be found here!
Not only is Bashar facing backlash, hate, and organized efforts AGAINST his participation, Israel is funneling money and resources into Facebook ads that look like this, claiming to shape the narrative:
Tumblr media
...as well as filming "comedy" "sketches" like this "song" called...
*deep existential sigh* "Jews Pua" Link to that video here, if you can stand three minutes of awful propaganda containing just the right combination of shitty, easy rhymes and enough pinkwashing to put "Cops at Pride!" to shame. All of this should make it VERY clear to anyone observing this situation as a whole that the political tricks at play are NOT being done equally from everyone involved. Dare I boldly say: this shit is INCREDIBLY ONE-SIDED and we need to remind ourselves of the awful reality that is Israel's access to the money, ability, and audience of their "dirty political tricks" more so than Bashar Murad or Iceland ever could.
Lastly, let's just acknowledge the racism-shaped elephant in the room. Now, I as a white American am not here to play "Racism Police." That will never be the case. What I am about to say applies to the greater conversation, and it's not just an "Adam" problem. It's a problem we see happen when one (1) Palestinian decides to exist and write a song, and the way the world has been built around us conditions us to see that and scream "dirty political trickery afoot!!" Truly, ask yourself is this is "equal" in any way shape or form, as Adam posited. Adam and people like him will treat Iceland and Israel as equal, but that doesn't automatically make them "equal."
We are living in a world where Israel is currently being sued for genocide. That is not an exaggeration, it's just something we can all see and talk about. Israel is a country that has the money, platform, and bias of the most powerful countries of the world to not be held to the same standards of responsibility for the horrible things they're doing, nor is my own country being properly held accountable for PAYING for these things they're doing. Race is something used as a tool to identify oppressed peoples not just because it's discriminatory, but it tells people who aren't part of that group that people like Bashar Murad are simply political just by existing. Nowhere does Adam mention that Bashar and his song "Wild West" are about his journey as an artist having to leave his home and travel thousands of miles to the global "west" to even have a chance of representing Iceland (not Palestine, not Gaza, just Iceland) in Eurovision while the country responsible for the death of his people are facing MUCH less scrutiny from the Eurovision powers that be, let alone Irish TikTok accounts with re: shitty media literacy skills.
My final message to you is this: if you're someone paying attention to Eurovision and you maybe feel confused or overwhelmed by Israel, Iceland, Bashar, etc. etc. etc., here's what I want to tell you:
This is not an equal game. Iceland/Bashar are nowhere near on the same level as Israel and the money/access they have to GLOBAL levels of propaganda. Israel, in fact, verbally confirms how they want to use Eurovision to "shape the narrative" which is far dirtier, far more political than just the song "Wild West." Moreover, thinking that treating Eurovision as apolitical or that EVERYONE deserves the SAME level of EQUAL scrutiny only helps Israel at the end of the day. The things they've done, are doing, and hope to do are representative of tens of thousands of people they've killed in the last few months alone. Would you genuinely look at Bashar Murad trying to represent Iceland and say "Yep, these two things are the same"? My hope is that you wouldn't, but people like Adam clearly do.
Don't be like Adam. Don't play this weak-ass centrism card that ultimately helps no one and just makes it easier for people to shift blame, suspicion, or anger towards Bashar Murad. This is not the fight being had right now, and don't let it waste your time. Focus on what and who matters, which is obviously: the country doing genocide and wants us all to be chill with that.
PS. As a personal recommendation, "Wild West" and "Into the Atmosphere" are my two favs to win for Iceland, so def go gives those a stream. And while you're at it, let Bashar himself take you on a visual journey that might help you understand his message a bit better.
Much love you all. Thank you for being here. EuroQuision out.

My Proud Girlfriend
a/n: honestly I didn't know how to write this but I tried...My request are open by the way so feel free to request anything
Tumblr media
*not my GIF*
Pairing: Florence Pugh x woso!reader; AWFC x CANWNT!Reader
Summary: I don't know how to resume that. Maybe just Flo is a proud of her gf
Type: Fluff
Warning: nothing
word count: 4380 (sorry)
-----------
'WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING HERE?' was the first thing you saw when you opened Twitter two days after your victory against Chelsea for the Conti Cup. A fan tweeted two screenshots from an Instagram story. The first story was a post reposted from the official AWFC's account; it was a picture of you and Sabrina D'angelo with the trophy with a little quote: "Proud of my girls, #COYG❤️🤍" The second was also post reposted but this time it was from the official Canada Soccer team's account, a picture of you, Sabrina, Jessie Fleming, and Kadeisha Buchanan; this time the quote was simple: 🇨🇦💘.
Okay, but where is the problem? The account that posted those screenshots was a Florence Pugh fan account; those screenshots were from Florence Pugh's Instagram. Okay, I think we need to go back in time to see what happened.
There are a lot of things you love in the world, and winning a match against Chelsea is clearly one of them. You joined Arsenal in 2020 with Lotte; the defender convinced you to come with her, and even if you had some plans to play for Portland Thorns, you wanted to play with your captain in national selection, Christine Sinclair.
After the final whistle, you quickly run to Sabrina, the other Canadian on the team and one of your best friends. You did it; you beat your rivals after a frustrating draw in the first London derby of the season and a knockout in the FA Cup. You didn't have the time to pull away from the goalkeeper before the rest of the team crashed into you two; obviously, they wanted to congratulate the player of the match and the author of two subliminal assists.
"You're heavy!" Sab said it under all the gooners, and you laughed.
"Okay girls, let our fantastic keeper breathe a little," Kim said, and everyone left your body and let you stand up before they all hugged you one by one.
"We did it!" you said after you turned to the other Canadian, and before she could reply, some Chelsea player came to congratulate you. To their surprise, you gave Magda and Pernille a solid hug, and the Swedish chuckled lightly.
"What was that for?" Magda said, and you pulled away.
"It's just that I realize that I didn't properly thank you for keeping an eye on Jessie." You replied, and they 'aww' at your confession.
"Oh, don't worry, it's nothing," Pernille said, and they released you. With Sab, you made your way to the two blues' Canadians. Jessie noticed your cocky smile, and she already cursed herself.
"No, don't start it now, Y/n." Jessie said, and you raised your arms while Kadeisha and Sabrina laughed beside you. Jessie and you are known to always act like sisters, so of course when one of your teams wins against the other's, it's always chaotic.
"I don't want to upset you or anything, but Janine was certain Arsenal would win today." You said it, and you heard the defender gasp, which made you laugh more.
After a lot of teasing and a quick interview, your two captains lifted the trophy with a loud cheer from the supporters. Today was definitely a day you would remember.
This night, you were celebrating with the girls. Well,  you were kindly bullying Kathrine and Gio when your phone vibrated on the table far from you, but fortunately for you, Lotte was near it. The defender quickly grabbed it when she noticed the name on the screen. She crossed the room to join you with the young girls and handled your device, mouthing, "It's her". She didn't have to explain more before you grabbed your phone and left the room for somewhere less noisy.
"Hey," you said after you accepted the facetime.
"Hey baby!" Florence greeted you back. "How is my pretty footballer?" she asked, and you blushed.
"Pretty good, and how is my beautiful actress?" you asked, and she grins.
"Pretty good too, but I miss you," she replied, and you felt a little sad at her confession.
"Me too, sweatheart," you said, and you took a moment to admire her before she spoke again.
"You said you had a big game today; tell me how it was." your girlfriend said. You immediately started to tell her everything about the day and your match. You told her about how you teased Jessie, and even if she didn't fully understand all you said, the actress couldn't help but feel butterflies when you told her how you gave the two assists and that they elected you player of the match. And when you asked her about her day, she came back to reality. "Oh, I didn't really do anything. It was a day off, so I just stayed home with Billie; she missed you too, by the way. I talked with my mom, and she said that she would see you soon." She explained, and you nodded.
You were about to reply when Lotte and Sabrina came. "Y/n, it's time to go back home," the keeper said, and before you could reply, the two girls approached you and pushed their heads in front of the phone.
"Hey Flo, how are you?" Lotte asked loudly, and you rolled your eyes at her while your girlfriend chuckled.
"Very good, and you?" but when the defender wanted to reply, she was cut by your other teammate.
"Do you know she misses you a lot?" Sabrina said, and even after you gently punched her arms, she didn't stop there. "The last week she cried because it's been too long since the last time you saw each other," she told her, and you cringed.
"Don't listen to her, babe; she doesn't know what she says."
"Oh, of course I know, the walls are not thick; I can even hear when you-" before she could finish her sentence, you hung out, and the British laughed while you gave a glare to the Canadian.
When you were back in your shared apartment with your favorite goalkeeper, you texted your girlfriend.
You: just back at home
Flo💖: how was the party?
You: very very good, Katie taught me a lot of new tricks
Flo💖: I hope she didn't make you drink too much
You: don't worry, Kim was here to stop her when she needed
Flo💖: I'm relieved to know that
Flo💖: I'll thank her here when I see her.
You: For what?
Flo💖: for taking care of you
You: I'm not a baby anymore 😑
Flo💖: yeah I know, but it's always less stressful to know that there is someone to take care of you even when I'm not with you
You: you start to act like I'm a child or something like that
Flo💖: sorry it's just that I don't like to be so far from you
You: you're very clingy sometime
Flo💖: youre the one who say that? 🤨
You: shut up
Flo💖: Love you ❤️
You: Me too ❤️
You: I'll sleep good night
Flo💖: Good night
Flo💖: i'll try to come to see you play soon
You: you don't have to
Flo💖: you're my girlfriend and I really miss you so trust me I will
You: thank you 💞
After that night, you were the principal subject of a lot of conversation. They all wanted to know why you exiled yourself during the party, but thankfully, Kim, your second mom, as Sab loves to say, sensed that you were uncomfortable and helped you every time.
On the pitch, you were in heaven: three victories in the league just before two matches away against Bayern. Really great opponent on paper, and after a loss at the Allianz Arena for the first leg, you were more inspired for the second leg, and Stina was thankfully for that because she was the target of one of the best passes you ever made, and she scored. After Frida's goal a little earlier, you were leading 2-0, and you almost scored a third for Arsenal, but Grohs' reflexes surprised you.
A few days after this game, Jonas announced that you'll have a media day, but a little special this time. He didn't say more, so when the day came, you were a little stressed; they wanted all the squad, even the injured one. You were sitting like for the team picture for the preseason; you were between Gio and Sab, and you couldn't help but annoy a little the Brazilian, even if she didn't mind; she was used to it now until you started to tickle her.
"So, we will have a fan who will come to interview you about the season; the questions were asked by the fan on Twitter and Instagram; if you want to reply, you can just raise your hand and she will let you talk." A member of the staff said and you all agreed. When you were waiting, you started to tease Gio again and Khaterin, who had joined her a few seconds earlier, until the keeper nudged you to gain your attention, but you didn't have time to ask why she did that because you heard a familiar voice.
"Hello, I'm Florence Pugh, and I'm a big fan of yours." She introduced herself, and you rubbed your eyes to be sure you weren't daydreaming about her. "So I'm here to ask you some fan's questions. I think they explained everything to you, so when you're ready, we can start." she said, and her gaze never left you.
She started with some usual questions, and you didn't make an effort to reply; you were just there admiring the woman who stole your heart a few years ago. "So a new accurate question. Is that true that Y/n and Jessie Flemming are a thing?" she asked, and you came back to reality when you heard her tone. Of course, because you and Jessie are always so close, some fans misinterpret it, and a lot of theories emerge everywhere.
When you felt all your teammates' gazes, you knew you had to reply, and even if you knew that Florence was not jealous because she had already met Jessie, you couldn't help but feel stressed. "What? No clearly not. Jessie is like the sister I never had, so yeah, we're best friends but nothing else." Your reply was clear, almost like you were trying to convince your girlfriend
After that, there were a bunch of other questions, until another one was especially for you: "Does Y/n have a boyfriend or a girlfriend?" Again, every gaze was on you, and you blushed lightly.
"Yes, I have a girlfriend, and she's the best in the world. She is busy because of work, and we don't actually live on the same continent, but she's always there for me. She calls me every night and texts me every morning; she loves to hear me talk about football, even if sometimes I know she doesn't fully understand. She's always beautiful, and she's an amazing woman; I really love her." You replied shyly, but you didn't look away from Florence, and she knew you meant it.
"Aww, it's too cute." Lia cooed, and you blushed harder.
"Our little baby grows up so fast; she already has a girlfriend." Leah said while wiping a false tear, and you rolled your eyes at her antics.
"I'm not a baby anymore. I'm nearly 24." You protested.
"Yes, but you are still our little baby." Katie added, and you didn't know how, but she managed to move without being detected and pinch your cheek.
In front of the group, Florence was laughing at the interaction. Of course, she already saw you flustered every time Christine pampered you too much, but this time it was more hilarious.
"I think we need to meet her. She needs to gain our approval if she wants to steal our little rising star." Katie said, and you smirked. It was funny because she was actually in the same room.
"Yeah, why not? I'll text her," you said casually before you exchanged a look with Sab and Lotte.
"It's funny that you said that because the next question is, who's THE baby of the team?" Your girlfriend asked, and you were ready for a wave of accusations.
"It's definitely Y/n." They all said it together, and you gasped. Of course, you were ready for that answer for some people, but even Gio, Katherine, and Victoria? That was a betrayal.
"What? Since when?" You asked dramatically, and they all laughed.
"Come on, you've been the baby of this team since the first time you stepped here." Lotte said.
"Wait, we have the same age, so if I'm a baby, you're too." You countered. "And now we have Gio and Katherine. And even Laura is younger than me." You added desperately.
"Yeah, but you have two team moms." Sab said, and you gripped your chest like you had a heart attack.
"Wow, even you?" Florence was watching, and she was literally trying not to laugh at your poor defense. "For your information, I have only one mom here, and it's Kimmie. Then I literally take these two—"you pointed to the Brazilian and the Danish beside you "—under my wings. So I think I should upgrade from baby to big sister." You said totally serious.
Leah and Lia seemed to think about it before they agreed, "Yeah, why not, if you insist?" The blonde said
"But don't worry, that doesn't mean we love you less; you're still our little baby," Beth said, making everyone laugh, and you groaned.
After a few minutes, the interview was over, and everyone started to leave except you and the Canadian keeper.
"So, you have a girlfriend, uh?" Florence asked you, and you nodded, "Too bad I wanted to ask you out, like on a date, just you and me tonight." She said dramatically.
"I'm sorry, but my girlfriend is very protective." You replied.
"If I remember correctly, you said she was beautiful." She took a step toward you.
"Yeah, I said that."
"And what else?"
"She's... pretty, like it's very unbelievable. She has a cute raspy voice. She can be clingy, but only when she misses me. And she's a great actress." You were only a few inches apart from each other until Sab cleared her throat.
Just outside of the media room, Katherine and Gio were spying on you. Laura stayed close to them to be sure they didn't do anything stupid. "Wow, I didn't know Y/n could be so flirty." Gio whispered, and Katherine nodded.
"She's so different from how she's with us." The Danish added
"What are you talking about?" Laura asked, and the young players almost screamed in fear at the sudden voice.
"Wow, you scared us," Katherine said, and the Austrian apologized.
"So what were you talking about?" She repeated.
"Y/n seem very flirty with the interviewer." Gio whispered, and Laura looked at you.
"But didn't she say she had a girlfriend?" She asked.
"Yeah, she had, but this woman is just an actress." Lotte replied, and the three almost screamed because she came out of nowhere.
"What are you doing here?" Laura asked.
"I couldn't find you anywhere, and I started to worry you could do anything stupid." She admitted, "And for Florence, she's an actress; she played in Marvel movies, and you know how much Y/n loves those movies."
"So do you think she's just being a fangirl?" The Brazilian asked.
"It wouldn't be too weird from her." The Austrian replied.
"And what would not be too weird?" You asked, and now the four girls screamed. "Wow. Okay, what's happening here?"
"You scared us." The Danish said that, and you examined them.
"What are you doing here? I thought the training would start in a few minutes." You said, and your best friend looked at her phone.
"You're right, we need to go now." Sab said, and you rushed to the practice pitch, followed by the girls.
Later that day, you spent the afternoon and night with Florence; she had to fly back the next day, so you decided to spend your free time together. You were cuddling on your bed, and everything seemed perfect. Florence was running her hand through your hair, humming a little tune from a random song.
"I'm sorry that we didn’t have a proper date." You said out of nowhere.
"Don't worry, I know you were tired with your training," she replied. "And to be honest, I think it was a great day." She sat up, and you mimicked her. "I mean, it’s been a long time since we've seen each other, and I’m glad that we spent it here, just together. Don’t get it wrong; I love the girls, and your teammate seems really important to you, but I just need you right now."
Honestly, you didn't know you could fall deeper for someone, but you were glad that it was her.
"Yes, but I think maybe I can introduce you properly to them tomorrow."
"I would love that, but I have to decline."
"Why?" You furrowed your eyebrows.
"Because I have to take a flight back to New York because I have a few interviews for the next few weeks that start in two days." She explained, and you pouted.
"That means you'll not be able to see our next match."
"I'm sorry, babe, but I promise when my last interview finishes, I'll jump on the plane to come back. You know we can't stay far away from each other for too long."
"I know, but I just wanted to spend more time with you."
"I know and I'm sorry, but I'll make up for that, I promise." After that and a few kisses and "I love you' exchanges, you both fell asleep. Unfortunately, when you woke up the next morning, she had already left.
Two days later, she had an interview, and the journalist surprised her in a good way. "So, Florence, you just came back from a little trip in England. How was it?"
"Oh, it was really cool. I saw my family again; it's been a while, and I could see my girlfriend," she replied.
"Oh, it's surprising," they chuckled. "Tell me if I'm wrong, but does your girlfriend play soccer in England?" They asked, and Florence's eyes were wide open.
"Yes, but how do you know that?" She was obviously surprised. Of course you didn't really hide your relationship; it's just that nobody really asked you both about it. Her family adored you, and she had already met your national team, who were the closest thing you can call a family.
"Some of our coworkers found a tweet that showed some stories you made after the victory of Arsenal against Chelsea, and you maybe don't know, but after that, everyone started a treasure hunt to know why you posted this. And after a little research, we found this," they told her, showing her a tablet with a publication from your Instagram account. It was a picture you took before you left for London; there was you and Lotte on this, and we could see an arm around your waist, but we couldn't see who belonged. But when we touched the screen to see the person tagged, Florence was tagged on the arm. Your girlfriend laughed at this.
"Wow, I totally forgot this picture. To be honest, we didn't really hide our relationship; it's just that we didn't talk about it because we were both focused on our careers, but yeah, she's my girlfriend, and I love her a lot, even if she loves Billie more than me," she joked.
"I don't really watch soccer, but I saw some edits about her on Tik Tok, and she seems pretty good at this," they said, and your girl friend smiled.
"She's the best; yeah, I think now she's the best." After this little intervention, the interview continued; they talked about her new movie and what she planned for the future.
A few weeks later, it was the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals. After a draw in the first leg against Wolfsburg in Germany, you needed to win this game. You were in the changing rooms when you received a text from Florence.
Flo💖: good luck for your match, and I have a surprise for you.
She sent you a photo of her wearing an Arsenal jersey.
You: Wow, babe, you are stunning 😍
You: And thank you; I think I needed that.
Flo💖: always ❤️
The Emirate Stadium was sold out, all the conditions were reunited for a great game. A little girl with a little Arsenal jersey was sitting beside her mom; she was distracted when someone sat beside her. The little girl's eyes were wide open when she realized who they were; she hit her mom's tights frenetically, and when the older woman looked at what happened, she was also shocked. Florence noticed the little girl's shirt, and she smiled. "We have the same shirt," she said, and the kid noticed on the back of her jersey, 'Y/l/n 24'.
"She's my favorite player," the girl said.
"Me too." Florence said she was exited. "I'm sure she'll score today," she announced.
"Of course she will." The conversation was cut short when the players entered the field.
The match was hard; of course you didn't plan to win the first half, but now it was the last minute of the second half of extra time. 2-2 was the score in the first leg, and it was the score now. There were a lot of fails, and it was obviously because you were all tired; you lost Laura a few minutes earlier, and the universe seems to believe in the victory the Germans had until this moment. After a great tackle, you passed the ball to Lotte, who found Frida with a great cross. The Norwegian pushed the ball until she found herself just in front of the penalty area; she didn't think twice and quickly shot. Unfortunately or fortunately, Frohms extended herself and pushed the ball out of the area again, but while she was still on the ground, you came out of nowhere. Your body reacted before you, and you did a perfect volley in the opposite upper corner.
Everything seemed unreal until you found your teammates' bodies crashing into yours. In the stadium, everyone was euphoric, and Florence was almost crying. When you came back from your trans, the ref whistled, and the match started again. You almost conceded another goal, but Lotte was quick to kick out the ball, and after that, the delivery, the final whistle. The joy erupted from the stands; everyone wanted to hug you, but they restained themself until you reached Sab after a little run. You jumped into her arms like you did after every big win, and you started to cry. After that, you congratulated the opponents; they were really hard to beat. When the families started to make their way on the pitch, you were requested for an interview.
"Y/n congratulation for this victory and your gaol. How does it feel to beat one of your favorite teams after this crazy match?" she asked. Florence made her way onto the pitch with Sab and Lotte.
"Thank you; honestly, I don't know what to say." you said "It was so hard; I gave everything I have; that seems so unreal." you added.
"The next step will be harder; you'll face Barcelone; they won against Chelsea two years ago; do you think you can beat them?"
"Honestly, I don't know; we'll both try to win our second champion's league. I don't know how, but I know we will try everything to beat them, even if they have good results against English teams."
"Okay, thank you. You just scored the winning goal; do you have anyone you want to celebrate with?"
"Yeah, my girlfriend, but she's in New York, so..." You couldn't finish when you felt a hand on your waist. You turned around to find Florence next to you with a goofy smile. "What are you doing here?" you asked, and you hugged her. Someone gave her a mic, and the interview continued.
"Wow, Florence Pugh, it's a surprise to see you here, but now that you're here, what did you think about this match?" the journalist asked.
"To start, I think I need to congratulate all the girls; they gave everything. Honestly, I came because I promised to see her play, but I found myself more and more implied in the game; it was amazing, and this goal was perfect. I see her practice every summer in the garden of the house, but it's something to see her play." Florence replied, and you almost forgot you were in front of everyone while you intertwined your fingers with hers. "I know she was frustrated after the first game, and now she made me fall for her again," she added, and the interviewer didn't have the time to react before you kissed the hazel-eyed girl gently.
"What?" almost all your teammates yelled, and you looked at them. You smiled widely, and you placed your hand on Flo's waist.
"Guys, let me introduce you to my girlfriend. Flo, these are my teammates, but you already know them." you said.
"The actress?" Katherine asked, and you laughed.
"I knew it!" Viv said, and everyone looked at her a little surprised. "I noticed how you looked at her, and I don't want to talk about your tweet about how she's so perfect." she explained, and you blushed.
"Wait, when she came, she immediately congratulated Lotte and Sab." Lia remarked.
"They started to date before we came here." Lotte explained.
"And every time we played in the USA, she came to see Y/n." Sab added.
"That means you've had a girlfriend for at least three years, and you didn't say anything?" Leah said, and you rolled your eyes.
"You never asked." you countered. "Now I think we need to see someone," you said, and everyone agreed.
Later that day, you were in Beth and Viv's apartment, and the girls stole Flo to ask her some questions about your relationship. Everything was alright, and you prepared something special in case you won the final against Barcelone.

Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) only included allowing suicide to those terminally ill if they were expected to expire within a short amount of time. That quickly changed to include people too poor to afford to live. As of 2021, MAID now also includes people with mental illness and, more horrifically, “mature minors.”
By mature minors, it means children. To quote Dying with Dignity Canada, these children must be “at least 12 years of age and capable of making decisions with respect to their health.” These “mature minors” must be suffering from a medical condition that is severe and incurable in order for this latest measure to apply to them.
According to Canada’s Department of Justice, parents are generally “entitled to make treatment decisions on their children’s behalf. The mature minor doctrine, however, allows children deemed sufficiently mature to make their own treatment decisions.” (The federal government does not define “mature,” nor does it specify who determines whether one is mature. On top of that, the doctrine varies from one province to another.)
"In the years since euthanasia was legalized, the number of Canadians taking lethal injections has increased almost fourfold. In 2017, the first full year that the practice was legal at the national level, 2,838 Canadians were euthanized. By 2020, that figure had more than doubled."
Now euthanizing infants is being proposed...
https://www.cochranetimes.com/news/canada/canada-maid-medical-assistance-in-dying-children
Canada continues to make assisted suicide more broad. Allowing anyone above 18 years of age to kill themselves simply because they don't want to be here anymore "intolerable to them" is the reasoning and now that offer is extending to CHILDREN. I mean I'd argue an 18 year old is still a child. This is EVIL and has been going since 2016.
In some Canadian provinces nearly 5 percent of deaths are MAiD deaths. In 2021, the province of Quebec reported that 4.7 percent of deaths in the province were due to MAiD; in British Columbia, the number was 4.8 percent. Progressive Vancouver Island is unofficially known as the “assisted-death capital of the world".
Canada is MURDERING its people through the idea of "ending suffering".

The RCMP did not follow the Privacy Act and its own guidelines when it chose web investigation technology, concludes a special report by Canada’s privacy commissioner, Philippe Dufresne, presented to Parliament on Thursday. The investigation was spurred by Tyee reporting in 2019 and 2020, which revealed the RCMP’s Tactical Internet Operational Support unit used tools that can circumvent the privacy and security of Canadians online. The previous privacy commissioner, after an earlier investigation, raised similar concerns about the RCMP’s use of the facial recognition service Clearview AI, and the force at the time said it would address those issues with a new screening program it called the National Technology Onboarding Program.

Winter Olympian (Jessie Fleming x Reader)
Tumblr media
warnings: none
a/n: i’m pretty sure the last winter olympic games were in 2022. based off this request:
prompt: in which jessie is dating a hockey player and is watching her in the olympics along with her chelsea teammates when the reader gets injured.
You and Jessie had been together since 2020. It was honestly a miracle that you guys hadn’t met before, having both been Canadian and having been to London, Ontario at the same time, multiple times. But you only met by some coincidence in the plane going to Vancouver from England. You had been in England for hockey, and Jessie to meet different head coaches and check out facilities. She was still in University. You were in England for a hockey competition that had ended up getting cancelled due to an outbreak. Your teammates had stayed in London, but you wanted to go back to Canada and university.
It had been the splat middle of the pandemic, and only necessary flights were scheduled, and it so happened that you and Jessie were sitting, with one free seat in between you, on a plane to Canada. You had both started talking, and then you realized everything you had in common. Canada natives, olympians, high level athletes. The rest was history.
Jessie sat in her living room with relatively the whole Chelsea team. Over the years, you had become close friends with the girls, even though you lived in Canada to play hockey professionally. The room had never been more crowded. On Jessie’s couch in-front of her flatscreen TV was magda, pernille, guro, sam, niahm and herself. On the floor at their feet sat Millie, Kadeisha, Fran, Ann- Kat and Zecira. And then across the room, chairs from the dinner table had been scattered across the TV area, seating Maren, Joanna, Lauren, Jess, and Emily. It was fully. Very full.
The game started with the national anthem and the shake of hands, as soccer does. But things went different quickly. The game was full of contact, even more because it was an olympic final between USA and Canada. Jessie watched, concentrating hard. "Jesus!" Magda yelled as a player for body slammed against the walls of the rink. "It’s fine, Magda. It’s hockey." Jessie muttered absent mindedly.
In the second period, it was 2-1 for USA and you got a penalty. A player pushed you hard against the glass and you completely abandoned your stick, going over and pushing her onto the ice. A fight broke out, your team holding you back and the opposite team yelling in your face. The ref put you in the box for the two minute penalty. You took your helmet off and looked around in annoyance as you sat in the box, chewing on your mouth guard.
"Damn Fleming. Every time I see her do that mouth guard thing I remember that our little quiet JFlem pulled her." Sam teased, making her blush red. You did look good. Slightly sweaty, tangled hair and stressed eyes did nothing to your charm.
It was only three minutes after you got let out from your penalty that you got taken down. Obviously, the girl you had pushed has held a grudge. As you skated with the puck and body checked you, sending your body flying sideways into the panels.
Your left leg collided with the panel, and you knew something was wrong immediately. It was the way your knee bent backwards and you screamed before you could stop yourself. The ref didn’t stop the play immediately much to the yells and cries of your teammates. By the time the ref blew the whistle, you were sobbing in pain on the ground.
"Holy shit! Ref! Why isn’t he calling that what the hell!" Jessie yelled, standing up and screaming at the TV as the camera panned on you, your body on the ground and your leg stuck out strangely. "That looks broken…" Ann Kat whispered to Z who nodded. "Shit. Shit." Jessie sweared, sitting down and putting her head between her hands. "Hey, she’ll be okay. She will be okay." Magda said, rubbing her hand on Jessie’s back. The freckled Canadian just nodded slowly.
The medics came and got you off the rink quickly, there was no way you could keep playing. You cried as you went off the rink, your helmet abandoned behind you. Your teammates patted you on the back and you just had to tell them to keep going.
But there was nothing you could do. You sat in the medical examiners room, your gear being taken off and your body examined. And thirty minutes later, you heard the final whistle and knew that USA had won gold. You cried, more for the loss than for your leg. You knew a broke leg meant you would be out for a while, and if you were out you could stay in London with Jessie. But loosing the gold medal match… that hurt more than a broken leg ever could.
One week later.
A nice stewardess rolled you out of the plane in a wheelchair as you held your crutches and your bag. You guys talked as she brought you to the area where your luggage would be, and where Jessie would be.
As you entered the large space, you spotted her right away. It was hard not too considering the entire chelsea team was there. Tears filled your eyes as you told the woman wheeling you you were good here. You stood up carefully and Jessie rushed up to you and hugged you tightly, then kissing you a couple of times. "I’m so sorry. I’m sorry." Jessie said. "You did so good. You played so well." Jessie said to you lovingly. "I’m okay. It’s okay. I’m here with you now." You said, holding her to you and kissing her again. "And the whole chelsea team apparently." You laughed, waving at the girls. "Yeah they all insisted to come. You scared the shit out of me during that game babe." Jessie said gently.
You smiled at her as a way of apologizing but she quickly ushered you to sit down and wheeled you towards the girls who greeted you as the Chelsea girls do. Loudly.

Heyo! As a Canadian, are there any particular ways we can help Palestine? Also, who are the companies actively shipping shit to israel?
Hello! Thank you so much for the question. I'd first like to take the opportunity to state that the federal government in Canada right now -the Trudeau Government -has been terribly consistent with supporting the IOF. For DECADES -since the creation of the settler state (which should not be a surprise to anyone, of course), Canada has a LONG 'diplomatic' history of being pro-Isnotreal. For folks who don't know/aren't aware, since we often hear about/talk about the US's imperialistic policies and actions against many communities around the world (which, again is understandable given the billions in military aid they give to Isnotreal and the sheer amount of militaristic aggression and violence the US unleashes daily to people they deem a 'threat' to their empire) -but I always remind folks to not forget that Canada is equally awful and problematic.
The Trudeau government, like many MP's across party lines, have supported the IOF and the Trudeau government has denied genocide 'allegations' against Isnotreal at the ICJ. Trudeau is also the one who advocated for a "humanitarian pause," after stumbling on his words a few months ago, and has, from time to time, 'condemned,' the IOF military for going 'overboard' when he trickles in his little empathetic 'we are so concerned for the people in Gaza,' while in the same breath saying the IOF didn't strike hospitals... (side eyes).
These are some recent examples (the first in June, and December of 2023, respectively) -which shows proof that Canada exports weapons to the IOF (but often through the US -the article below addresses this). Since you asked about about which companies are shipping to Isnotreal, the only one I can reference is CN Rail [Canadian National Railway] (which is where some protests have happened), but there aren't any other particular companies I can reference because shipments are done relatively in secret, so there's not a strong/direct paper trail, so to speak. this is an except from the first article below:
"Canada doesn’t normally release many details on defence exports to Israel or other countries. Since 2015, however, the largest annual categories of shipments fall into three categories: bombs, torpedoes, missiles and other explosive devices; aircraft, drones, aero engines, aircraft equipment for military use and electronic equipment; spacecraft and components." "A 2020-2021 study by the House of Commons foreign affairs committee obtained records that shed some light on the goods Canadian firms were seeking permission to export to Israel, including transport vehicles, circuit boards for Israel’s fleet of F-15 and V-22 aircraft and components for radios." "The Canadian-made components that go into each F-35 don’t show up in Ottawa’s records of military goods exports because they are shipped to the United States, where the aircraft’s manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, is based, and Global Affairs Canada does not publish the full value of annual military exports to the U.S."
It is very concerning how the Canadian government operates this way, and we should all be demanding more transparency about arms transfers to the US. Project Ploughshares, the research committee that they spoke about in the first article, is a resource I would look into if you want to learn more about this. They focus on "disarmament efforts and international security specifically related to the arms trade..." I've attached their website below. You can also access previous webinars, reports, and commentary on their page on these topics.
There were 2 successful direct action protests in Canada, one in Winnipeg and the other in Montreal, in November and December of last year, respectively. Both of whom were blocking railways in an effort to raise awareness about Canada supporting and sending arms to Isnotreal.
This also happened recently:
Now, what can be done on our ends? Plenty -sharing and creating posts about what is happening -and telling the world we won't remain silent on the genocide happening in Gaza.
This is the most updated BDS movement list for you to boycott companies and brands that either profit off of or indirectly support the genocide of Palestinian people:
Oxfam also created this small article about what we can do to help which I find is a great start:
Some of the actions include emailing the Prime Minister (they have a template for you to work with), and I wanted to also include emailing your MP's (Members of Parliament), to demand a ceasefire.
There is also a current petition in parliament right now you can sign -it's a demand to a ceasefire, and also demands an investigation into Canadian arms deals/sells in Isnotreal -and for more transparency into this, generally speaking (you can read everything the MP outlines below). This is open until February 19th, 2024. I may also make a separate post about this too:
There are some petitions on change.org I know people have set up, so you can take a look there of course. There is also a source that Oxfam links -they have a section of current events/resources where you can take action. The most recent national march for Gaza was in December 2023 (it took place in Ottawa, on unceded and un-surrendered Algonquin territory -Parliament Hill), and I am sure more will be planned for those able to attend/what is accessible to you.
I know this was quite long, but I hope this offers some direction and clarity, if not encourages more people to look into some of these topics and issues more deeply. Thank you once again for sharing this today. I will also be updating my page soon.
As always, free Palestine!

Seventy-five years after two nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan — killing hundreds of thousands of people in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki — one small community in the Northwest Territories is still haunted by its connection to the blasts. Across Great Bear Lake from the 533-person hamlet of Délı̨nę sits the historic mining site of Port Radium. [...] [T]he Canadian government quietly called for uranium production as part of the country's involvement in the Manhattan Project. That uranium was sent south to help the United States with the race to build a nuclear bomb. [...] [N]ear Great Bear Lake, workers would eventually wonder about the risks they took delivering sacks of ore on their backs as they sent it south — without being told what they were about to be complicit in. [...] Days after the blasts, the Canadian government announced the country's role in the explosions, citing the Great Bear Lake mine's uranium as a key ingredient for the project, said Geoffrey Bird, a professor at Royal Roads University in Victoria who studies tourism and the history of remembrance. An English-language sign connecting Port Radium to the atomic bomb was photographed in Délı̨nę in December 1945. [...] While the Canadian government hasn't apologized to Délı̨nę, the community has apologized to Japan. [...] Locals in Délı̨nę say many ore workers and their family members developed cancer later in life. [...] In the book If Only We Had Known, which tells the story of Port Radium from the eyes of the Sahtúot'ine, elders remember workers' clothing covered with dust, windy days when ore was caught up in the air and children playing games in mine tailings.

[O]n 6 August 1998, 10 members of the small Sahtugot’ine Dene community of Deline (Fort Franklin) in the ‘Northwest Territories’ apologized in Hiroshima for the atomic destruction of that city – and the death of over 200,000 civilians – exactly 53 years earlier [...]. Eldorado Gold Mines Ltd. [was] placed under state control during World War Two. They [the Dene] were allowed only to help it [uranium] on its long and winding way, 3,000 miles by river, lake, road and air, from Port Radium on Great Bear Lake to Port Hope on Lake Ontario, where, from 1942-45, the suddenly precious ore – the ‘new gold’ of the atomic age – was, together with ‘Belgian’ uranium from the Congo, refined and dispatched to Los Alamos, the desert lab in New Mexico secretly building the new, city-smashing Superweapon. [...] Beginning in the 1970s, and spiking sharply in the 1980s, many of the men who had handled and carried the ore – and the men who had mined it – began to die from cancer [...]. The “Dene,” the CBC ‘revealed,’ “were never told of the health hazards they faced, even though the government knew … as early as 1932 that precautions should be taken in handling radioactive materials”. Instead [...] “workers [were] dressed in casual clothes and uranium dust [...] covered the men like flour.” [...] [A]s detailed in a December 1998 article [...] in First Nations Drum: [...] [T]he mine was kept running at a very high pace [...]. The Dene were employed as ‘coolies’ packing 45-kilogram sacks of radioactive ore for three dollars a day, working 12 hours a day, six days a week. This at a time when the ore was worth over $70,000 a gram. [...] In 1998, the Déline Dene Band Uranium Committee released a 160-page [...] report, “They Never Told Us These Things.” In a 2011 article in Maisonneuve, Salverson recounts a community meeting in Deline to discuss the report, “where [non-Dene] lawyers delivered a year’s worth of uranium-impact research from the archives in Ottawa,” revealing that in “the mountain of papers we dug up … there is not one mention of the Dene, your people.”
