Day 12: a fighter in the Multiversal War

We learned from He Who Remains, the Kang hiding at the End of Time, that the Multiverse once came close to annihilation when multiple versions of him, each from their own parallel universes, went at war against each other, fighting to take control or annihilate the others' time lines in an attempt to conquer every realities. Realising the danger, He Who Remains set out to neutralise his variants, ended the war and, in order to prevent such an event from happening again, created the Time Variance Authority that would ensure the "proper flow" of time.

I guess it is fair to assume all of those Kangs didn't wage their war alone. Most probably had henchmen, allies, even armies at their command: people who either followed them out of loyalty, personal interest or obligation. For Kangs can be charismatic, rewarding, or simply terrifying - and even those disapproving of heir conquering intents may have been disposed to protect their own time branches from destruction.

Others may also have join in the fighting: independent factions taking advantage of the chaos, particular Kang's opponents or interdimensional teams that might have seen how dangerous the war was for the multiverse stability and joined forces to try and stop the Kangs (teams that may or may not have been lead by He Who Remains himself - a Kang indeed, but one that wanted to stop the others).

Today's theory is that Mobius may have been one those fighters - any on of them. With or against Kang(s), willingly or through coercion, a "simple" soldier or a high-ranking strategist, but one of those who lived this world ending conflict from the inside.

As the TVA was yet to be created, it was no nexus even that lead him to become an agent. He may have known Kang, personally even, or he had never met him but unwittingly caught his eye. Either way, the Kang "Who Remained" saw him as a valuable asset, someone he wanted to work for the Agency he was about to build and, with or without Mobius' consent, he had him undergo the conditioning requested to become a TVA analyst...

In an arguably crazier version of this, Mobius used to be a Kang variant himself, who accepted or was forced to abandon his memories to become the first TVA agent...

It wasn't a great night for him. He had a technical mishap with his performance earlier on. He was booed when he got the award and there was a backlash after what he said.

Who knows what impact he has on his career and how he feels about it. But I think it's an example of how silly it is to make an award the centre of anything.

I wanna know about your art style. How you draw like that??

i tried putting down considerations as well as a (very) general step by step of what i do; if there's anything more specific you want me to explain lmk i guess?

first off, general (self imposed) constraints / purpose of project -- this informs what i draw & how i draw it

i.e. "kuradex" is pretty different from my normal art (my 5 latest rough illustrations):

although i've said its for merch purposes, ive started drawing these because i wanted to practice conveying "liveliness" and noticing key features / nuances of a given design, but i didn't want to spend a large amount of time on each one.

so what i came up with is

i want to draw things on-model in terms of proportions ( + take note of weight / tapering of shapes / etc )

no backgrounds & minimal "props"

experiment with / practice line/texture/color/flow/rhythm/etc

spend <1 hr on each pokemon on average (this is a bit more difficult for me to track, but for example, the cyndaquil line took me less than 42min to color, combined, and means at some point in time instead of focusing on cleaning up the art as much as i can, i stop after cleaning up most of it)

that said, the pose & the rhythm/flow of lines are key in conveying liveliness, and if i have a concept in mind i usually end up going with it, but i may go thru a few if i dont.

i consider pokemon origin / lore or a key point in its design, and if i'm particularly stuck, i try looking up pokemon card illustrations for inspiration. (i noticed the research i do is essentially a truncated version of how Atsushi Furusawa does research before doing an illustration.

(& even despite all this i do get stuck sometimes and don't exactly understand a pokemon and just opt for "as cute or cool as i can make it i guess?", but i think it's part of the process...?) (theoretically things that are A Shape should be really easy to draw but with what i want to practice in perspective i find them difficult...)

this is from my latest paid req but these are my first sketches of chesnaught -- i was thinking of how one of its inspirations is a warrior / tanker from RPGs, so i drew a pose where it's shielding its face.

i do another pass and take note of details.

in general i draw overlapping shapes and erase (it's a bit visible on one of the spikes)

because i opt for quickness i start coloring at this point -- i actually just use a colored "color burn" layer & i actually colorpick official art & lay down messy flats & set the color layer to 60%

60% multiply layer for shadows. i tend to use both hard and soft brushes

for bigger projects i would use 2-3 shadow layers to create more "layered" shadows

here i use overlay layer (60%). this is just throwing colors at it and seeing what works and doesn't work. i personally prefer to throw red under the eye and a yellow or blue near the top of the head. this is mostly done with a soft brush

before this point, everything is under the rough lines, but now i actually start drawing/painting over it, color picking the colors that have been laid down from the previous steps and cleaning up / rendering textures (making the green on its arms look fuzzy) / fixing anything that i forgot or looks too off (i.e. the spike on its shoulder and the way the tail curves)

I could potentially keep cleaning this up, but this is where i usually stop 🫡

Hi Ralph! I think I remember you once mentioning that you’re from somewhere that’s not American or England or Canada. Somewhere in Australasia? I don’t remember where so I can’t ask as many specific questions.

If the global entertainment industry were primarily based in the country you live in, what would be different? Would it even be significantly different?

I'm in Wellington - an actual city not just a grainy video and a legend.

Your question sort of blew my mind - the idea that it would be possible to imagine the global entertainment might be based in New Zealand is almost incomprehensible to me. I read this to @42mins this evening and we talked a lot about how impossible to conceive it was.

It's hard to overstate how much deeply ingrained popular culture is based on being on the margins of a much larger world and either literally or figuratively about that distance.

Something like Boy - that helped launch Taika Waititi into the global entertainment industry - has the way that people from the periphery relate global culture to their lives baked in. I think Royals was read as being a song about class in the northern hemisphere. But to me it's so clearly about being a bored teenager in a suburb at the end of the world. One of our biggest bands biggest hits (and how we remember daylight savings) is all about travelling to the northern hemisphere to make money touring.

In order to imagine New Zealand at the centre of global culture - you have to imagine it not being New Zealand. New Zealand is the name of a settler colony - and the settlers were defined by the distance from the culture they came from. Every aspect of New Zealand's economy, politics and culture has been shaped by that reality and its not extractable. In a world where a global culture industry could be based on the land I live in - that land is not New Zealand.

The answer that follows that it would be Māori culture on a land where Māori had had tino rangatiratanga. Which is a beautiful, but impossible thing for me to try and imagine.
