G'morning all! Its nice to get back things,. Theres been some roadblocks with med shortages and life, and also with the material for these recipes. So far we've covered a lot of pastries, not because theyre mentioned more often in the series, but because being mentioned lends them more specificity in flavor than things like gravy, peas, or various meats. The latter can be prepped, seasoned, and served in so many different ways that it feels harder to make them 'faithfully' because a packet of instant potato mash is just as faithful as a pot of buttered potato mash. Baked goods tend towards 1, maybe 2, 'base' recipes that get altered and added to.

Today, we'll be making Beorn's Honey Cakes! A dish from one of my partners favorite characters- a delectable little treat befitting the… warm personality of the character.

All-purpose flour

Baking powder

Salt

Ground nutmeg

Unsalted butter

Whole milk

2 eggs

Honey

Vanilla extract

The veins of honey cakes ancestry can be traced back to any moment where people began baking bread. Honey is a natural preservative, and sweeter still on its lonesome.

Tastes like a honey graham cracker

But the texture is softer, wetter- somewhat like banana bread

Oh, and this will make your house smell So So Good

If you can resist the temptation of eating them immediately, they taste even richer the day after baking

Would pair well with milk green tea

Would also pair well with fresh orange slices (or those chocolate 'orange slices' candy)

Genuinely don't forget to flip them upside down when they go to bake the second time, not sure what it is but i was curious and did a test where i flipped half of the batch upside down and kept the other half of the batch right-side up like they cooked in the muffin tin. The ones i flipped upside down universally had a more consistent texture and the honey was able to permeate further.

From start to finish this recipe takes about an hour of work, give or take some negligible time for prep.

The batter is perhaps the babybird of all cake batters. The gloopy, protruding crumbs of butter, not unlike a squabs beady pupils visibly dark under its skin, break up the mass of sickly smooth and reassuringly sweet-smelling oak-colored liquid. You can feel the confusion of bees outside your home, wondering if this your attempt at making royal jelly.

Just like a babybird, it becomes more than the sum of its parts. Layer on that honey drizzle, layer it on thick, theres no risk of drowning subtle flavors. Its crisp edges will keep its form, springy and warm, inviting you as if you're not the one who crafted it (food you didn't cook always tastes better). The bees are sooooooooooooooo jealous of your opposable thumbs and muscular strength.

If you dont have eggs you could try substituting with apple mash. I can't vouch for it in this recipe but replacing eggs with mashed up apples for pancakes gives it adds a nice fruity flavor without changing the texture, and in theory should work here as well.

I give this recipe a solid 10/10 (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.)

🐁 ORIGINAL RESIPPY TEXT BELOW 🐁

Ingredients:

270 grams all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp freshly ground nutmeg

1 stick unsalted butter

160 grams milk

2 eggs

110 grams your favorite honey

1 tsp vanilla extract

Muffin tray and parchment paper

Method:

Preheat oven to 350f

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.

Add the butter and rub it into the flour with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a small bowl beat the eggs until just combined. Pour in milk and then vanilla extract while stirring. Keep stirring vigorously while slowly pouring in honey.

Stir until the mixture is consistent in color.

Pour the liquids over the dry mixture and stir until just combined.

Pour the batter into a greased muffin tray, don't use any muffin paper/lining/cups.

Bake for 16 minutes, or until they reach their full height.

Carefully remove from the muffin pan and place the muffins upside down on a parchment lined tray.

Using a silicone pastry brush, generously cover the tops of the cakes with honey. Allow to sit for about 5 minutes to let the honey soak into the cakes.

Bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the cakes are golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Joy. That’s what Gojo Satoru elicited in you. If there was a better word for it, a more appropriate permutation of words that described how he made you feel exactly, then it would probably be that. But that aside, your heart was filled with nothing but that very feeling even as you padded barefoot into your kitchen which was in shambles. Your mixing bowl lay in smithereens on the floor along with custard. Your stovetop would probably take ages to clean with all the splatters of cooked custard and butter. The counter was a mess with all the condiments he used, several unused utensils – just how many turners did he need? – and powdered sugar everywhere.

“Sweet cheeks!” he called out, looking up at you and stopping you from going in further, a broom on his hand. “Don’t come in here. T-there’s broken…” He looked silly with an apron on, his hair in disarray, held back by one of the fluffy headbands you usually used when you did your skincare. And weirdest of all, he was wearing one of your oversized shirts. Well, on you, that is. It looked like it was about to tear at the seams on him. You had to bite back laughter, seeing the dejected expression on his face. “What?”

You leaned against the fridge, crossing your arms, relishing in the absurdity of the situation. A person like Gojo Satoru was larger than life, meant to do great things, fly, not cook you breakfast – or attempt to – or clean your kitchen. Still, you enjoyed the scene and its domesticity, reminding you of that time in Hokkaido his mom caught the two of you playing with pancake batter. Now you doubted if he even made that, not that it mattered.

“Need help, handsome?”

He slowly shook his head, evidently sulking that you find amusement in his predicament. He wasn’t even holding the damn broom right. “No, I’ll clean up here. You stay in the living room.”

“You sure? You look like you’re in a pinch right now.”

At your taunting, he started whining, throwing the broom on the floor and walking over the mess on the floor to get to you, his lower lip jutting out even as he placed both his hands on your hips, pulling you towards him. “You’re being annoying today, baby. I’ll call one of our staff to clean up. The mess can wait.”

Standing on your toes, you wrapped your arms around him, using that as leverage as you jumped and wrapped your legs around his waist. Surprised at your sudden maneuver, he staggered backwards, supporting you on your thighs. You giggled at that, and though he said, “Extra annoying,” he still smiled giddily at you as he walked around your kitchen island. “You seem happy.”

“I am.”

Satoru sat you down on the island, the clean part anyway, and stood between your legs whilst he reached for the plate of French toasts he made, sliding it over the granite top. You looked down at it, grinning at the very nicely plated food before you, complete with sliced berries and perfectly smothered in snowy sugar.

“I can ignore the mess for the effort. Thank you.” You reached for the fork, but he stopped you, shaking his head. “No. You’re not doing anything today. My sweet cheeks will relax while I feed her, okay?”

“Can’t say I hate it.”

He took some of the toast, making sure it had all the elements in one bite as he held it before your mouth, this expectant look shining in his eyes when you finally opened up and tasted what he made. You chewed thoughtfully, nodding in approval. “Damn good French toasts, baby. A-plus.”

“Really?”

“Mhmm. More.” You opened your mouth like a child much to his delight, more than glad to oblige. All the while, you just busied yourself with playing with the ears on the headband he was wearing, fully content in the little bubble you’ve both created in that corner of the kitchen where the morning sun shone just right on him.

“I got you orange juice, too. Wait, I’ll get it –” He moved back to get to the fridge, but you hooked your leg around him, stopping his progress and drawing him closer. Without preamble, you cupped his face, pressing your lips to his, intense from the get-go as you showed in actions just what you couldn’t tell him in words. You didn’t want him anywhere he is out of your reach, holding him in place by the nape while your other hand wandered down to the hem of his – your – shirt, tugging at it.

“Someone’s enjoying her breakfast too much,” he said as he heeded your unspoken command, pulling the garment off him. You swallowed hard, eyes wild as you took in every line and sinew of his musculature. “Well, this is infinitely better than breakfast.” You smirked when you saw his cheeks turn pink when he came closer, kissing you just as fervently as you did earlier.

You pawed at the ridiculous headband he was wearing, throwing it blindly somewhere in the kitchen. He slid the plate beside you further to the side as he grabbed your thighs, lifting them higher up his waist while you used your foot to push his sweatpants down, whining in frustration against his lips when you couldn’t quite get it off.

“Easy,” he spoke softly, eyes closed as he rested his forehead against yours, his breathing steady and warm against your cheek. He made quick work of pushing his sweats down, taking his cock out, pretty as always as he gave it a few pumps. “You want this, hmm?”

“Want you, Toru,” you moaned, catching his lower lip between your teeth, spurring him on. He reached between your thighs, running his thumb over the wet patch there, rubbing your clit over the fabric. “Didn’t know you wanted to make babies for breakfast.”

“Please, baby,” you whined, “Want you.”

“Someone’s needy,” he teased, but gave you what you wanted, pushing your panties to the side. “So wet for me.” He held his dick, running its pink tip through your folds and sliding in just a bit at a time before he’s pulling back, easing in agonizingly slow that your patience was fraying. He did just that for a few more moments until he finally pushed in all the way, stealing the breath from your lungs when he repeated the action, pulling all the way to the tip before slowly going back into your heat. “Fuck, baby.”

He set a rhythm that had you seeing stars, his name falling in high-pitched whines from your mouth, lost in the undeniable pleasure of it all. At some point, he adjusted his angle, hitting you in all the right places that had acid white flashes dominating your vision, feeling like you were going to float into space if it weren’t for the bruising hold he had on your hips.

“Harder,” you managed to choke out in the midst of you pretty much losing your mind with the way he was continuously hitting your sweet spot. “D-don’t stop – ah! Fuck – more – mmhhh…”

“Y/N, baby, you feel so good – so fucking good.”

“I’m c-close…”

“I know, baby, I know.” He leaned down, gently peppering kisses on your cheeks down to your jawline and wherever else he could reach, his hips and breaths turning erratic as he thrust in shallower, faster strokes, his moans and grunts mixing with yours as he brought you to your high, long and dragged out as he found his own, following after you with a drawn out groan, your fluttering hole milking him for all he’s worth.

The kitchen was filled with ragged breaths as you both came down from whatever heaven he catapulted you both to. Soft laughter soon mingled with it as the full realization of what you did finally hit you. Satoru pushed himself up, hovering over you while he regarded you with those mischief-filled eyes.

“I love you,” he murmured. “I’m so damn in love with you, L/N Y/N. You don’t even know what you do to me.”

You reached up as you pushed yourself to a sitting position, shivering slightly when he pulled out of you, your essences dripping on the tiles below you, but you couldn’t care less, kissing him stupid. “I love you, too.”

Satoru looked at you lovingly, seemingly drunk as he stood there, his forehead on yours as he cupped the side of your face. “Say you’ll stay with me for always. Say you’re not going anywhere I can’t see you.” He briefly pressed his lips onto yours. “Say you’re mine.”

“I’m yours, Satoru. Yours alone.” You felt tears falling from your eyes as you pulled him closer, basking in the afterglow of your union. “I’m not going anywhere.”

HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO CREATE A BREADBEAST THAT POWERFUL

every time I try my starters die out of spite towards their delicious fate

What flour are you feeding? I almost lost Tex because I was feeding bleached all purpose flour. Once I switched to unbleached all purpose, she turned around and started having Opinions about things.

Everywhere I have read also says to feed with a 1:1:1 ratio (1 part starter, 1 part water, 1 part flour) by weight. But I was also told the starter should look and feel like "pancake batter" and - despite never having made pancakes in my life - in my VERY LIMITED experience, 1:1:1 makes way too thick a mixture. So, I usually keep 50-100 grams of starter, and more water and less flour. If I was keeping 100 grams of starter, I would add 110 grams of water and 90 grams of flour. Also you do have to keep enough of them I think. When I discard, I don't like to keep less than 50g of starter. You can probably still work with less, but I don't want to.

I'm also finding that I have to listen to her about when she wants to be fed. Everywhere says you're supposed to feed them once a day (if she's at room temp) or once a week (if in fridge) but I'm finding that MY room temperature is not "room temperature" but in fact is lower (because we're in the middle of a michigan winter over here). So instead of feeding her "Every day," I wait until I can see a clear layer of alcohol on top. I was told that's how you actually know they're ready to be fed, and it seems to be sound advice.

I've also seen advice about what to do with that alcohol; some people say mix it in, some say pour off as much as possible before stirring. I poured it off a couple of times and Tex was very sad afterward. I mix it back in, now, she does great. Maybe it works the opposite for some people, idk. I just know what works for me and Tex.

I'm editing to add: I don't know if the container matters but I got three Weck tulip jars (the one in the photos) and they have nice wide lids and the glass just sits on top and the curved bottom is easy to clean. I got three of them so that I could swap back and forth at feed. I stir her to mix everything, then pour off the measured amount I want into a clean jar and set it aside while I do whatever with the discard or rinse the dirty jar, then feed her in the new one.

Chapter 109:

After your talk, Jihyo mentions that she is hungry. Dahyun says, "You know what, unnie, oppa got me chocolate pancake and a shake early in the morning, and they were the best." Jihyo looks at you and gives you a deep stare. You know that stare and it's not a good one. That stare means that she is going to demand something from you. "Aww, that's so nice of you; maybe you could make all of us breakfast, too," said Jihyo. You reply, "I would be happy to cook for all of you, sweetie." You all go to the kitchen and watch you as you cook them breakfast. The smell of the food attracted the sleeping members that were sleeping in the living room. Momo was the first one up and said, "I want some, too, with a lot of meat, please." Eventually, you ended up cooking for all the members. The only good side about it is that when Jihyo and Mina were done, they brought out Jisoo, Hina, and Ari. You gave them a morning kiss and said good morning to them. After breakfast, Dahyun said, "I have some news for you all." All the girls paid attention since Dahyun rarely asked for attention from all the members.

Chapter 110: As Dahyun began to talk, you placed Ari and Hina between yourself and the members. You were there for support, but feel like the members aren't too happy with me. I'll listen to Dahyun carefully. Jihyo says, "Everyone, keep it down, Dahyun has something to say." Before she says anything, you put Hina and Ari between yourself, just in case. Dahyun stands in front of the other members and says, "I'm not sure if anyone has noticed but I've been somewhat distant for a while and good reason. In these next few months, I'll be going through some changes, and I would like some support." Dahyun is kind of vague, and there are so members that don't understand what she is trying to say. Chaeyoung says "What do you mean unnie?" Tzuyu understood exactly what she said as she noticed that Dahyun had had her hand on her belly a lot recently. She says, "Dahyun unnie are you telling us that you are pregnant?" Everyone is in shock by what Tzuyu said. Nayeon asks, "Dahyun is that true?" Dahyun nods and says, "Yes, I'm pregnant with Oppa's child." At that moment, everyone turns their heads toward you.

Chapter 111: Everyone turns around to look at you after Dahyun said in that she is expecting your child. Your reaction is to have your head looking down out of instinct. Chaeyoung says, "I knew it! I had my suspicions that something was going on with Dahyun when she was throwing up a couple of weeks ago." "I bet oppa wants to get all of us pregnant," yells Tzuyu. "Maybe we should have him get a vasectomy haha," says Jeongyeon. "Is it true what Tzuyu said, oppa?" asks Nayeon. "How many months are you Dahyun?" asks Momo. "I'm about to be four months soon," says Dahyun. "I already knew Dahyun was pregnant for a while," said Sana. While they are talking, you are just holding on to Hina and Ari for dear life until Mina says, "I hit him when I found out he got her pregnant." "That's a good idea, Mina," said most members. The nonpregnant members stood up and gave you a big slap on the back since they couldn't hit you because you were holding the twins. You then turn to Dahyun and give her a sad look, but Dahyun just laughs instead.

Chapter 112: You whisper to Ari and Hina, "Thank you, girls." You do everything you can to just stay with them since you know that they will protect you from the other members. It is a way to hang out with them alone since you don't have a chance to hang out with them often. Once breakfast is over, the girls want to take Dahyun out to a spa day to celebrate. They put you in charge of taking care of Hina and Ari, while Jisoo was going to visit her grandparents. You plan to take your twins to the beach, where you took their mom. You ask Mina to help you pack all the materials needed for the trip and put them in the minivan. You prepare baby formula for them and food for yourself and place them in their seat. At the same time, all the girls leave for the spa and you head to the beach. You put on soothing music to get them relaxed and hit record on the go pro that is installed in the back of your seat and the one facing the road. Having some videos for memories is your goal for this trip, so when they are older, they can see how much time they spent with their father. As you are halfway there, you notice that Hina is asleep while Ari is waving her arms. You get to the beach and park closest to the entrance, which has a perfect view. You roll down the front windows, get out and open the right sliding door. You check if the girls need their diapers changed and try to feed them in. case they are hungry. You sit on the floor of the mid-section of the van and carry Hina out to look at the sand and water, but she seems to feel uncomfortable with the wind on her face. You switch with Ari and she has the opposite reaction and seems to love it. After spending some time by the car you decide to take a walk with them. You pull out your double stroller and place Ari in the front and Hina in the back, but only after putting some sunscreen and a small visor on them. You pull out their sunshade and head out. You walk for about thirty minutes and find the spot where you and Mina sat to watch the sunset. "This is the same spot where your mom and I confessed our feelings for each other. You are that proof of those feelings and I hope you know that your mom and I love you both" ( you are filming this by the way). After a breeze of wind picked up, you decided to go back to the van and head home. You get home, give them both a bath (Mina's room), dress them, feed them, and decide to take a nap. You place them on Mina's bed and put on somebody's pillows to make sure that they don't fall off. You sleep on the edge of the bed and wait for Mina and the other girls to arrive from their spa day.

All day i was struggling not to binge, and every time i overate or cracked and ate something i immediately walked. I ate at 6pm and thought I'd fast overnight. But i ended up eating at 8.. and then 11. I walked so much my feet have like rug burn from the treadmill but I'm pretty sure that's mostly cuz i was barefoot

I can't for the fucjing LIFE of me restrict i don't know what's going on i really hope it's pms and not me loosing everything due to a lack of self control

2023 Cookie of the Year: Kingdom Edition

☁️ Heya! I’m sure you got the note my colleague Kit sent you and pinned at the top of the blog. She’ll be working her way into being part of our main contributor panel over the next couple months just as I and Strawberry Crepe Cookie have, which is how we ended up becoming frequent contributors on this blog. How she got into this is a long story, and one for another time. But moving on to the main topic here, it’s time to vote for 2023’s Cookie of the Year! In case you missed it last year like Vanilla Meringue Cookie (Your ACTUAL Editor, who also goes by Meringue) did, here’s how it works:

None of the others even bothered to send her a text saying 'no thanks' to Nora's request. Ruby gave her a maybe but quite frankly that might as well have been a no.

Which meant she and Pyrrha had to eat a number of pancakes that even made Nora herself balk. By themselves.

"Tr-AAAAAWWWWWWUUUUUUUURRRRP!!!...Traitors..."

The berserker weakly groaned out, fist shakily rising into the air before it fell back to the ground at her side. She was full. 110% full of pancakes. And there were still more left.

Why had Pyrrha made this many thinking Nora could eat it alone in the first place? Or at least no provide her with enough syrup to choke them all back? The worst part about eating this many pancakes was how many of them she'd been forced to eat dry!

I spent quite some time yesterday yelling about Star Trek with the wonderful @regionalpancake and @curator-on-ao3, and I need to share their comedic genius with the world!

We were talking about how, if the Zhat Vash are so extremely opposed to synthetic life and any form of AI, could they possibly manage to hack the androids on Mars and to cause them to go rogue? To which Curator commented:

“I’m an iPhone user and I couldn’t hack an android!”

This was followed some time later by a discussion about how in recent Trek, there has been an increasing distinction between People Who Matter and Those Who Don’t. And how its encumbent upon the people who are less significant for the fate of the world to sacrifice themselves for the Important People.

With regards to this, Pancakes observed of Rose (from Dr Who), a character who thinks she is unimportant and whom the Doctor tells that There Are No Unimportant People:

“If she were a Star Trek character, Rose would have been cannon fodder.”

Curator: “You mean... canon fodder? :D”

I don’t know if these are funny to anyone but me, but I laughed so hard I had to go find my asthma spray. So I needed to share XD

Holo-Tech Database

Over the last seven or so months, I have watched through every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s the first time I’ve seen the entire series, there were quite a few episodes in the later seasons I’d never seen before. Quite an enjoyable experience on the whole.

But because I’m me, of course I didn’t just watch TNG. Instead, I took notes every single time the holodeck or any other piece of holo-technology played a part in the plot, were the setting for even the briefest of scenes, or so much as got mentioned. Essentially, I’m building towards a database of every little scrap of canonical information about holo-technology that I can get my hand on. And this was a start.

I haven’t had the time or energy to look through all of my notes in detail. There is a lot of information in there already. Of course, I’ll only be able to draw any real conclusions once I add in all the data from DS9, Voyager, and PIC, (since I’m interested in the state of technology at the time La Sirena is in operation, because of course that’s what this is about), but it’ll be quite a while before I get there.

So, in lieu of any detailed analysis, here are some quick impressions of my first foray into holo-episode-tracking!

30 Days of Picard Postivity

With just over 30 days to go, the premiere of Star Trek: Picard season 2 (3rd March in the US, 4th March internationally) is fast approaching, and I for one cannot wait to get back into the world I fell in love with two years ago. Thirty days is quite some time, however, and even though new trailers and promo pics seem to be dropping daily, I felt like we could use something to tide us over until March.

After the long hiatus, I think this is the perfect time to revisit all the things we enjoyed about season 1. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has forgotten a lot of the details of those episodes, and who would love to see some of the wonderful characters, locations, and stories back on my dash. So, without further ado:

Massive Picard Season 2 Spoilers Ahead

So the latest episode of The Ready Room, the Star Trek recap show hosted by Wil Wheaton, had a preview of Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard. It's interviews with all of the main actors and they explain in some detail where they're characters are at at the beginning of season 2.

It puts a lot of shots from the trailers in perspective and I have a lot of thoughts that I want to share, but because this is a very, very explicit spoilery preview, I'm putting both the video and my initial reaction under the cut.

My #1 post of 2022

I just had a realization about why Agnes Jurati’s story in Star Trek: Picard season 2 feels so wrong to me, and I am going to inflict it on all of you!

Spoilers for the entirety of season 2 ahead! CW: Mention of depression, PTSD, anxiety, and emotional manipulation

(NB: I’m going to completely disregard the discrepancy in Agnes’s character between seasons 1 and 2. I think when you take Agnes’s story and development from the first season into account, her “arc” in season 2 falls apart completely. But for the sake of this argument, I’m going to meet the season 2 writers on their terms. I’m going to ignore the character of season 1 Agnes, and instead will simply look at season 2′s Jurati to explain why I think the story the writers gave her falls flat.)

I was taking notes for a way-too-long essay about my problems with PIC season 2 (which I may or may not write eventually), and I was trying to put into words why it always irks me when people say merging with the Borg Queen was a satisfying end to Jurati’s arc.

What I was never able to put my finger on until now is that when the Borg Queen and Jurati merge at the end of episode 9, that’s not actually the culmination of Jurati’s arc. It’s the Queen’s.
