Germatin Grammar/Diction Guide
Information on IPA
Germatin is Erscoga's dimension-wide second language. The dictionary is still a work-in-progress, but the grammar/pronunciation system has been set up. This one is for the diction nerds.
Alphabet
Germatin, like all of the languages in Erscoga, uses the same alphabet as English (and Latin). (It’s definitely not just because we don’t want to deal with typing special characters in Erscoga documents.) Although many words originate from German words, Germatin does not include any letters with umlauts.

A Note About Germatin Diction
The following page contains some rules about pronouncing words in Germatin. However, it is worth noting that ALL pronunciations in Germatin are flexible based on how an individual interprets the word, context, what sounds best when singing a sentence, etc.
Germatin originated as a language to sing in, and while most sung pronunciations are the same across Germatin songs, some words have been pronounced in several different ways when sung (even within the same song) based on internal rhyme. The rules that follow are for the most basic pronunciation of Germatin, but most Germatin speakers will be able to understand you even with variations in pronunciation (for example, a Germatin speaker will understand [‘eɪnə] or [‘aɪnə] to be the word “eina”).
Pronunciation of Vowels
Single Vowels
A
An “A” by itself is always pronounced [a].
E
Most often pronounced [ɛ], but there are a few instances where a lone “e” is pronounced [e] (“nenov,” “veha,” “megis,” “casese,” “amre,” “asre”).
Most final “e”s sound more like a schwa than a true [ɛ]. In the word “none” ([non]) the final “e” may be silent.
I
If in a stressed syllable OR final, it is pronounced [i]. If in an unstressed syllable and not the final letter in a word, it is [ɪ].
EXCEPTION: in the pronoun “inein,” the first “i” is pronounced [aɪ] just like the “ei.”
EXCEPTION: the word “zinitz” = [‘zɪnɪts]
EXCEPTION: the word “trinre” = [‘tɾɪnrə]
EXCEPTION: in the suffix -(e)xit, the “i” is always [i].
O
Can be [o] or [a] depending on what sounds better in the word. (IDK, I can’t figure out a rule for this one).
U
Most often [u], with a few exceptions. (This does NOT apply if the “u” is part of the “qu” combo! In that case it is being used to make the [kw] sound paired with the q. “Cue,” as in “aucue,” is similar, sounding as [kju].)
EXCEPTION: in the word “usei,” and “unis” it is pronounced [ju]. “Unum” can be either [‘unum] or [‘junum].
EXCEPTION: in the word “dunter,” it is pronounced [ʌ].
EXCEPTION: in the words “numinum” and sometimes “umitum” the second “u” is pronounced [ʌ] ([‘numinʌm] and [‘umitʌm]).
Diphthongs
AE
“Ae” is always [e(ɪ)] (some Germatin speakers pronounce this as a pure [e] and some pronounce it as the [eɪ] diphthong).
AI(E)
“Ai” or “aie” is always [eɪ].
AU
“Au” is always [aʊ].
EI
Most often [aɪ] but can also be [eɪ] based on what we thought sounded best. When in doubt, either will probably work but we tend to favor [aɪ]. “Drei” is always [dreɪ].
EXCEPTION: “eiach” = [jak]/[jaχ]
EU
Most often [eɪu].
EXCEPTION: “queum” = [‘kwiəm]
NOTE: the triphthong “ieu” is [ju] instead
“Ieua” = [‘jua]
“Vieur” = [vjuɹ]/[vjʌɹ]
IA
“Ia” (with no other vowels around it) is always [ia]/[ja] depending on syllable divide/how fast you move through the word.
Watch out for the word “teiasen,” which is pronounced [‘taɪəsɛn]—the “ei” diphthong takes precedence and turns the following “a” (which is its own syllable) into a schwa.

“Ue” isn’t very common outside of the “que” ([kwɛ]) and “cue” ([kju]) combos, but if it isn’t part of either of those, it is simply [uɛ].
NOTE: Doubling a vowel… pretty much does not do anything. You can lengthen the vowel for dramatic effect if you want, but generally a double vowel like that in “kiin” does not affect the pronunciation of the word.

“B” is always [b].
C
Generally, “c” followed by a/u/o is [k] and “c” followed by e/i/y is [s].
Vowel + “ch” can be an ichlaut or achlaut (following the same rules as in German) OR just [k] depending on the speaker. (Basically, it just depends on whether you can do the [ç]/[χ] sound. Either pronunciation is accepted for all relevant words.)
“ch” + vowel at the beginning of the word is [ʃ]. “Ch” + vowel in the middle of the word is [ʃ] (“elcha” = [‘ɛltʃa]; “sichum” = [‘sitʃum]).
“Sch” is always [ʃ].
“Sc” with no h is always [sk].

“D” is always [d].

“F” is always [f].
G
“G” is almost always [g]. “Gi” tends to be [dʒi], and some words use [ʒ] (“flige”, “destagie”) just because it sounded cooler.

Grammar
Word Order
Word order is generally exactly the same as in English, so that sentences can be translated almost 1:1. The only thing that throws this off is how Germatin handles verb tenses and negation. (In English, negation can happen before the word being negated, e.g. “she is not tall” or “he is not coming,” but in Germatin all negation is handled through the suffix -nic.) When in doubt, you can always follow English grammar rules in Germatin. (As such, things like adjectives/adverbs, which are the same as in English, won’t be explained here.)
However, because Germatin exists specifically for English to be translated into for songwriting purposes, you can get extremely lazy with Germatin grammar and still get your point across using context. Germatin speakers typically use as few words as possible, unless they are trying to be poetic.
Nouns
Unlike Latin and German, Germatin nouns do not have a grammatical gender. Thus, there are only two articles, much like in English: thas (“the”) and “eina” (“a”/”an”/”one”). Following the “use as few words as possible except when writing lyrics” rule, in everyday speech these articles would not be used unless absolutely necessary (for example, keeping “thas” out of respect in front of a proper noun, or using “eina” to specify that there was only one thing). Only proper nouns are capitalized—no pronouns are capitalized.
Nouns are pluralized using the suffix -gen.
Possession can be shown using the possessive pronouns/adjectives (inein, tura/tusura, querer/quier/quoir, unrer) OR the suffix -et (which works like the English “‘s”). “-et” can also be used instead of a possessive adjective.

Verbs
One thing to note is that verbs in Germatin do not change based on the subject like they might in English (for example, “I give” vs. “she gives”). They only change with tense.
Tenses are pretty simple in Germatin—again, following the “use as few words as possible” rule, Germatin speakers tend to use only four tenses: the simple past (“I waited”), present (“I wait”), and future (“I will wait”), and present perfect tense (“I have waited/been waiting”).
One exception is that there are two words that are used in place of the English “to be” and its forms (e.g. is, are, am, was, were, etc.). “Istest” is the most common and the only one that is typically conjugated (“ic istest”—”I am”; “ic istexit”—”I was”; “ic wertem istest”—”I will be”). “Quse” is only used if a one syllable word is necessary to fit a melody.
While you can use any tense that exists in English following the “Germatin can be translated almost 1:1 to English” rule, you can also simplify the more complex tenses to one of the four above (for example, “I go there”—”Ic ienens dorbi” replacing “I am going there”—”Ic istest ienens dorbi”).
In the simple present tense, verbs do not change from their base form. For the past tense, add the suffix “-(e)xit.” For the future tense, add the word “wertem” (will/am going to) in front of the verb. For the present perfect tense, add the word “etha” (have/having) before the verb.
Verbs are negated in the same way as nouns: with the suffix -nic. On past tense verbs, this suffix is added at the very end.
NOTE: With the suffix -(e)xit, the “e” is only added if the verb ends in a consonant. Some verbs like “istest” have letters taken off before the suffix so that they flow better (so the past tense of “istest” is “istexit,” not “istestexit”).
NOTE: “Etha” (have/having) is an irregular verb. The past tense is “atha” because we came up with those words before we made the grammar rules.
NOTE: “Do” has two words that can be used depending on number of syllables needed in a sung phrase: “faen” and “nontu.” “Faen” is more common in spoken Germatin. “Faen” is also irregular for the same reason as “etha” and “amre”, with the past tense being “feit.”

REVIEW
I loooved this episode!!! It was so good :DD. I mean I am FREAKING OUT and I am FREAKING OUT about the next episode but you know :D xD. Although most of the freaking out from this episode is now freaking out about how this stuff will resolve next episode lol, and the rest of next episode, like from the promo, is separate xD. Well- next episodes! Anyway, my point is, freaked out tonight, gonna freak out next Tuesday night, I'm dying <333. In the words of Ashlyn (from HSMTMTS), "I'm dying, I'm deceased, yes". Yep XD. That's me right now lol. AAAAHHHHHHHH!! Like, have you ever freaked out about characters so hard you almost threw up? Even if there were probably other factors lol. Anyway! About the episode lol. The Tommy and Judd plot was hilarious xD. But also made a lot of sense! I did genuinely see both sides of it. And also it was very stressful xd. It managing to be so funny at the same time was a crime, frankly /hj. And of course TK's storyline literally killed me 😭. I don't know how I'm still alive, I think I'm here as a ghost. Save me xdd. I say TK because really it was Tarlos, and Owen, and Robert, but you know xD. More accurately: The Huntington's Storyline. Now it sounds foreboding xdd. Maybe uncapitalize "storyline" in your head. Perhaps "the" too, depending on the sentence lol. Anyway! I'm dying <3. More accurately, I'm dead <3. It was just SO. GOOD!!! AUGH, I'm still not okay about it xD. As if I expect myself to be lol - it's literally been 3 and a half hours lol. Which, by the way, yes I know my liveblog was delayed, like I said I got distracted watching xD. And I had a lot to say lol. But I did rewatch basically the last half of the episode and liveblog it that way lol, with some pauses and going back's lol. Also I had to do some other stuff during that so yeah xD. Anyway! All great storylines :)). And the calls were cool too! I really hope Wyatt's okay 😭. Frankly, there's a lot of stressed that needs wrapping up next week that I'm nervous about xdd. I just hope it all DOES get wrapped up lol, and ends well xdd. But yeah, it was a super cool episode with VERY dramatic storylines, and a lot of heartwarming moments :'DD. So great 🥰🥰🥰❤️.

Nancy! She was great this episode :D. Again, besides the fighting xD. I will say I do love all their loyalty :)), just not when it pits them against each other xd. Anyway, Nancy did great inside the burning building, even if Tommy made her and TK leave <3. She was great at her job this week :D. I love her 🥰🥰.
Paul! He was great this episode :). We didn't see him too much, but that doesn't change it. Besides, once again, the fighting xdd. I do love how he was like "nah I already tried to get her to tell me" though XDD. Speaking of, him and Asha are so cute :DD. Like his reaction when she showed up, and how he defended her in the fight 🥰🥰. The faces go for both of those lol. They're just great, I love them :)). Anyway, Paul was great at his job this week :D. Owen! He was great this episode :D. Even though we only saw him at the beginning at the end xD. I'm really glad he got to see him telling TK about the Huntington's :'). It was a great scene <33. And the ENDING o.o. I'm so glad they're coming to the wedding :D, but also o.o. Owen o.o xD. Or, Robert, rather. Like, that's a big request. But from 9-1-1 (the og) we know it's legal in California, and I don't know about Texas, so why would you do it there xD. I mean I see his reasons but still. Anyway, I don't even know what I want to happen specifically with that one, I just hope everything works out okay <333. And I feel horrible for Robert in general :((( :'(. Still, I'm glad they get more brotherly time :'D. Anyway, we didn't actually see Owen work this week, but eh xD. He was great at his job this week :)). We'll count fatherhood and brotherhood for this week xD. I love him :)) 🥰.
Grace! She was great this episode :))! Though she did get dragged into the fighting XD. It was through defending her husband though, so that's a bonus :D. I love them so much 🥰🥰. Tommy! I think I've already committed to doing everyone separately so here we are xD. I'll probably just talk about each side of it. Anyway! She was great this episode :D. Besides the fighting, of course xdd. But to be fair she did slay in some of it lol. Like, that dinner scene was hilarious XDD. I just died watching it lol. Not as in just now, but yeah xD. Anyway, here's the thing: I do see her side of the argument. But I think she reacted more harshly than Judd. I don't only agree with one of them, but it's not equal agreement. I think Tommy has a fair point on the "saving someone's life" front, especially considering they all do this like, all the time xD. And I also get feeling betrayed by Judd for calling HR on her lol. That felt like it went a bit too far. But honestly, I just hope everything works out :'((. I don't like them fighting, they're my besties your honor <333. Anyway, she was great at her job this episode :). Her and Judd stopping the rest of the crew from fighting was great too :DD. I love them :). Even when they're fighting, they can unite on some things. And just the fact that they were totally on the same page - aGH, it was great. I love her 🥰❤️❤️.
Judd! He was great this episode :)). Once again, besides the fighting xD. And like I said, the dinner scene was HILARIOUS lol. But I will say that I agree more with Judd than Tommy. He was very calm from the beginning, and he even tried to help her get the patient out when she was disobeying orders. Like I said, I think calling HR was a bit far xd, but not like WAYY too far, you know? They definitely need to learn how to sort it out better in the future though, if they want to continue being friends and co captains. Well, separate captains alongside each other, yk. Plus, Judd talking about following orders and rules isn't too out of character. Like, I don't know if I'd say the others were full on out of character, but it was kind of a "you don't have much room to talk" kind of situation xD. But we've known from, what is it, episode 3? That Judd cares about those rules. Maybe not all the time, but most of the time. And I think this came from the same place that did: fear. He was scared for TK in episode 3 (season 1), and he feared for Tommy's life here. I just really hope they can work everything out <33. Also I loved him and Grace supporting each other :D. My babeys <33. Also AAAAAHHHHHHH WYATT 😳😬😭😭😭😭. I'm not okay, he better be okay. I loved Tommy supporting Judd at the end there though, despite everything <333. Carlos! He was great this episode :D. Like I said, I think I'm committed to doing them separately xD. Now, I don't think these last two will be as long as Tommy and Judd, but I just loved their plot so much that they're going last lol <3. Anyway! AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!! Carlos supporting TK this episode was just gold 😭😭. That entire scene of him finding out and the comforting TK was just- aUGH, AMAZING!! And the ending scene too :')). They just slayed in every moment :'D. In case you didn't see from the liveblog or you forgot, they were the ones I was freaking out so much about that I almost threw up xD. Like it wasn't SUPER close lol, but still. It was the first scene with them, I just couldn't <333. I love them so much :')). And AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH I AM SO EXCITED FOR NEXT TIME!!! TK! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! He was great this episode :D. I loved his storyline SO much. It was just so beautiful 😭😭. And sad, but everything worked out :'D. Seeing Carlos support him was just 😭😭😭❤️❤️. Your honor I love them so much <333. I felt so awful for TK this episode, until the end of course :')). But it was still heartbreaking before that :'((. My babey doesn't deserve this/that 😭😭. I'm just SO relieved he and Owen are okay :')). And even though it seems like the logical choice or like conclusion, I'm just really glad we got to see both Owen telling TK and TK telling Carlos <33. Like I said, or like, what I mean I guess with the logical part, is that it makes sense to have both those scenes, especially when there was only like one other scene with TK's side of it anyway, but I'm still happy about it xD. Anyway, I do have to again mention that kiss 🥰🥰🥰. AAHHH it was so adorable :'DD. Also, I'm so happy that Robert and his family are coming to TK's wedding!!! I was really hoping they would be :))). Even if it means Robert and Owen are gonna have their drama xdd. Not like, fighting, but you know lol. All that stuff xD. Also, speaking of, I liked how TK was like, the calmest of the fighting today lol. He definitely wasn't CALM, but I think he was just so stressed about the Huntington's (😭😭😭 for him though xdd) that he didn't quite have the energy or focus to deal with it.
