If i had a nickel for every show starring a character(s) of colour who were powerful, badass and well written; but are constantly shit on to prop up the white "morally grey" characters who have rushed and/or contradictory development up to and including their ships; I'd have three nickels.

That's it. That's the joke. No "which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened thrice". Cause when it happens that many times, it stops being surprising.

It happened with Scott McCall, it happened with Daisy Johnson, why wouldn't it happen with Alina Starkov and Mal Oretsev?

The reason why you're getting so many people annoyed/nervous about the possibility of Tolya/Inej is because the scene of her taking his hand solidifies the show's simplified and therefore bad faith take on the Without Armor line/scene.

The show made Kaz more outwardly emotional/vulnerable because we aren't in his head where he is those things. They've also literally progressed him to what's essentially the end of his book arc while Inej is...I honestly don't even know the changes made to her personality don't make sense to me.

So, with a more emotionally available Kaz, the Without Armor scene in the show lacks the double meaning it had in the book. A double meaning that was already just subtext, not text.

Therefore, you are left with Inej saying, "You want me, but you can't touch me, so this won't work." and then she leaves the scene upset. A scene where Kaz talked about Jordie, gave her information on her family which he'd been secretly gathering potentially for years just to make her happy and then makes himself explicitly clear in how he feels.

In show, Kaz has told her he holds more faith in her than the saints. That he needs her. He wants her comfort. She saves him from drowning. It's highly likely she was told what Kaz said at the Emerald Palace. She knows he used the club as collateral for her. These are things that either aren't said directly or happen later in the book than the Without Armor speech does.

But in the chapel in the show, she tells him, "I'll have you without armor, or not at all." After detailing instances of touch while holding his gloved hand as he tries to stay calm...and leaves upset with him...a man with ptsd cyclically triggered by touch.

The subtext Isn't There.

And, the next time we see her, she is smiling and taking someone else's ungloved hand.

Do you not see how that is bad writing? 🤣

This isn't saying she shouldn't leave. Her reasons for going are valid regardless of how she feels about Kaz. She needs to go. That was never the problem. But she leaves in the show Mad at him for...things he cannot control and, as written in the show, this Inej is not one who would return...and that's...rough. Especially because...in the show Kaz has essentially done nearly everything that makes his book version worthy of Inej coming back to him.

Fanservice is not God, and the scene should not have been included imo...at least not verbatim. And if they were determined to include the Without Armor scene despite removing the subtext, then they should not have added the Tolya and Inej smiling/hand holding because holy shit is that callous.

Like, I see the meaning behind this, but making it all about Inej? Ew.

Watching that is torture. I'd understand if it was friendly and platonic, like Kaz helping her to overcome her fear. But she knows he can't stand any skin contact. She knows & she still wants to force him. It's so clearly romantic, I hate every second of it. It's not only her fear after the menagerie, it's "I want him", whatever the cost. "He should trust me." While for him it's torture. It's not about her. It shouldn't be about her. Kaz owes her absolutely nothing. Show story wise, she's free. No longer a slave. Leave Kaz be. Just let him be.

If you're a k*nej shipper, whatever you have to say, leave it for yourself please.

I love him.

For me it's sparkles in the air when they stand together and interact. I know it's about "Do your part and let's leave", but I can't help myself. This is what should have been. This is canon for me.

This episode is a good development for Jesper his nature wise. "Life doesn't often give second choices. So do catch up." And I already can see Jesper working extra hard to be in Kaz's favor. To be his. Yeah, so much to think about.

Lmaoo, I already know who. Good foreshadowing.

The glow around Kaz's head. :) Also, PAIN. So much to think about. I'm curious what ao3 has to offer after this. Nothing can stop me from shipping Kaz and Jesper.

i’m so upset about the erasure of inejs trauma not only in this season but throughout the entire show. there were so many opportunities to include it and they just didn’t??

the first fight with the taxidermist when he pinned her down?

the toxin dream?

the fact that they KILLED tante helene and there was no visible reaction from inej??

instead they give her a lost brother and make her toxin dream about her relationship with kaz when everyone else’s involves their trauma and links to their backstory. the fact that the show gave her a brother makes me feel like they’re lessening her trauma more because it takes the attention off HER.

same thing with the dream, there was no reason for it to be about kaz when we could’ve gotten a perfect flashback to her being kidnapped and working in the menagerie. there weren’t any physical indications of her trauma either. i feel like they could’ve also included her devotion to her faith a lot more as it makes sense to the nature of her character.

as much as i’m upset i can’t possibly get over how PERFECT amita was as inej, (ignoring the fact that she and none of the other crows are the correct age) especially this season, acting was off the charts, with the poor material she was given.

i, as a stan of zoya and zoyalai, couldn't have hated this ridiculous ending more. i don't know how they're going to separate nikolina, make zoya stand out as a general and nikolai's main and truest love interest. the way it looks, even if they were to adapt kos and row, it would look like zoya is a replacement for alina. they took the crumbs they could have from zoyalai and still didn't add, even knowing that the endgame is zoyalai and that zoya is the one who will become queen. it's just awful, and i really hated it.

nikolai never loved alina, alina never wanted to be with nikolai and always saw him as a friend, mal would never leave alina lol and most important of all zoya was the first person nikolai loved and chose for himself beyond of his duty as monarch.

they changed crucial things for the continuity of the story, there is no opening for even more of the crows (since crooked kingdom was poorly adapted) and kos and row are beyond my imagination. that was so bad. i think overall they managed to spoil all the characters, but i as stan da zoya am particularly enraged.

and also, my god, the changes with nikolai! they really didn't understand the importance of the sturmhond to him.

And the only reason why this isn't registering as fucked up to anyone is the fact they completely erased Inej's story and character arc.

season two of shadow and bone should have shown absolutely every last fucking person that this show is a soulless piece of trash adaptation that doesn’t understand nor gives two fucks about the source material they're allegedly trying to adapt and that the people behind this show were all lying to your faces when they apologized for the things that upset people for 24 hours before season one streamed two years ago, because after all this show still erases the trauma of a woman’s sexual abuse story and they are still sexualizing bisexual people and they are still fucking everything about these characters and their dynamics up.

season one should have upset most people enough to stop stanning this show but during the last two years we have learned that there’s A Lot that the tv industry can do that people won’t care about. an ableist, colorist and fatphobic and age inaccurate casting that hurts people by taking their representation away is something people won’t care about. complex characters being reduced to an inch of what they actually are like so they and their relationship can neatly fit into archetypes, tropes and ao3 tags is something people won’t care about. showrunners getting exposed for having their white stunt doubles do brownface is something people won’t care about. a show having a dumb script that makes everyone on the show look like a fucking loser is something people won’t care about.

and now season two is out and they did everything they already did in season one wrong but it’s somehow still so much worse. after watching season one i felt like the deeply offensive and wrong things about this show were still explainable, season two actually has me at loss for words because of how bad it is. because of how there’s not a single thing they did right about the soc books; not the characters, not their relationships, not their storyline, nor the world they live in. i could give a few examples like the fact that kaz told inej that feeling as if she’s not really free from the menagerie where she was sex trafficked as a child "isn’t her fight anymore, it’s his“ just because pekka rollins owns her now. or the fact that wylan and jesper met via a one night stand and were fucking by episode four even tho they don’t even kiss before the end of ck. or that they turned pekka rollins into a super villain who wants to kill kaz even though the whole point of his role in the books is that he has no idea why kaz has it out for him and he doesn’t care abt these teenagers.

i could explain all these and so many more examples in depth, and still it wouldn’t be enough to capture the the true scope of how bad and truly horrible this show is. and yet. and yet when i log into tumblr dot com or twitter dot com i see gifsets of this show, of the relationships they don’t understand, of the characters they butchered and i'm seeing people rooting for another season of this nonsense. at this point this show feels like a social experiment that’s trying to see how far people will go to defend a deeply offensive and atrociously bad piece of media. and during the last 48 hours i've come to realize that some of y'all will never be able to be pushed too far. some of y’all had their brains rotted away a long time ago when tiktok and ao3 made you believe that media is nothing more than the consumption of aesthetics, tropes and archetypes and that it’s a good thing if these are responsible for the death of art. if you claim to love the book and the show at the same time you are lying to yourself because that is simply impossible. you have, in short, truly lost the fucking plot.

She doesn't realise how hard that is for him, does she? Her saying Jordie's name feels wrong to me. It's his most intimate secret and trauma. I don't remember the book much (I'm fixing that already), but I believe he first told about Jordie to Jesper.

"Damn it, Jordie!" "Who the hell is Jordie?" "Someone I trusted. Someone I didn't want to lose."

I keep talking about that because it's incredibly important, but they tone it down with Jesper. I NEED to see that interaction between Kaz and Jesper.

Jesper's point of view on all of this is so different compared to Inej's.

I think my fav episode still remains 4 or 5. Whatever it was when Kaz made Rollins kneel in front of him. I think the flashbacks and his trauma were one of the best things shown right for the Crows. Then there's Jesper with his mom. I'm ready to see Colm. <3 Oh, and Nina is a beauty. I love her. As much as I'd want a fatter actress playing her, Danielle is doing great. She fits into this role.
