Bodywork often switches between "global" and "local" techniques to achieve its goals. We must do the same when caring for our society. The Atlantic recently had two articles about a "dark triad", one of individual personality traits, and one applied to national politics. They are remarkably co-related to a healthy global/local strategy for all.

Advice on how to identify and avoid Dark Triads in local (individual) relationships:

"The traits to look for are self-importance, a sense of entitlement, vanity, a victim mentality, a tendency to bend the truth or even openly lie, manipulativeness, grandiosity, a lack of remorse, and an absence of empathy. Probe for these characteristics particularly when on first dates and in job interviews." [Know that these traits are most prevalent in political and entertainment fields, with a healthy scattering of CEOs. Dark triad traits are least prevalent in professions that involve caring for other people.]

From the global (national) perspective:

"The U.K. is now an object lesson for other countries dealing with a dark triad of deindustrialization, degrowth, and denigration of foreigners. Having offshored industry in favor of finance, its economy wasn’t resilient.

The British government pursued a policy of austerity, fretting about debt rather than productivity or aggregate demand. In the past 30 years, the British economy chose finance over industry, Britain’s government chose austerity over investment, and British voters chose a closed and poorer economy over an open and richer one. The predictable results are falling wages and stunningly low productivity growth.

The resulting erosion in living standards made the public desperate for something to blame. Blame-seeking conservatives spotted bogeymen abroad. Brexit cut off the economy from further growth and set the stage for a rolling political circus."

"The U.S. has a different menu of problems from the U.K.’s. But here too, politicians are navigating an industrial sector in structural decline, a political left that is often skeptical about the virtues of economic growth, and a political right that is organized in part around hating foreigners. Enemies of progress can criticize the legacy of industrialization, productivity, and globalization. But the U.K. shows us what can happen when a rich country seems to reject all three. Rather than transforming into some post-economic Eden of good vibes, it becomes bitter, flailing, and nonsensical."

And finally, some ways to turn it around. From the individual article:

"The characteristics of a Light Triad include faith in humanity (trusting in people’s fundamental goodness), humanism (believing in the dignity and worth of each person), and a Kantian adherence to the idea of universal moral law (in this context, refusing to objectify or instrumentalize others). Compared with the 7 percent that are dark, Kaufman finds that fully 50 percent of his international population sample qualify as Light Triads, and that the average person has more light than dark personality traits."

I believe Joe Biden and Kamala Harris exemplify the Light Triad traits far more than any of the Republican politicians, who all seem to cluster their policies around the Dark Triad traits, both individual and nationalistic.

A particularly pernicious variant of this behavior is called “revenge bedtime procrastination,” in which some people put off sleep as a form of rebellion against their own inner authority. The writer Sylvia Plath described it nicely: “I wonder why I don't go to bed and go to sleep. But then it would be tomorrow, so I decide that no matter how tired, no matter how incoherent I am, I can skip one hour more of sleep and live.” Weirdly, we deprive ourselves of sleep to show some sort of independence from—well, ourselves.

Revenge bedtime procrastination seems illogical, insofar as the perpetrator and the recipient of the revenge are the same person. But the explanation is fairly straightforward: It happens when a person harbors some deep resistance to being “told” what to do in an area as personal and fundamental as when to go to bed, likely because she resents being told what to do in other parts of her life. So she fights back by exerting her own authority and staying up.

Personal control over our environment—or even the illusion of control—is deeply connected to our emotional balance. A 2019 study in the journal Emotion showed that when we perceive a loss of control over our environment, our positive emotions decline; exerting more control lowers negative emotions. Given that sleep is something we can directly control, we may flout common-sense rules about getting to bed, because we are unconsciously seeking a better emotional state—until the morning, when the evil alarm clock fills us with loathing and regret.

Sisifo, il re di Efira, era famoso nella mitologia greca per la sua ingegnosità; era infatti così intelligente da ingannare la morte due volte, facendo arrabbiare gli dèi. Questi si vendicarono condannando Sisifo a un tormento eterno negli inferi: doveva far rotolare un enorme masso fino alla cima di una collina. Quando arrivava in cima, il masso rotolava di nuovo verso il basso e lui doveva ricominciare tutto da capo, all’infinito.

Al giorno d’oggi, qualsiasi compito che combini tedio, lotta, stress e inutilità può essere definito un “supplizio di Sisifo”. Pensate ai cosiddetti duct-taper, cioè quelli che lavorano per un servizio clienti e che hanno il compito di trattare con persone arrabbiate tutto il giorno, mentre intanto le condizioni che creano questa aggressività dei clienti non cambiano mai. [...] Si potrebbe anche affermare che tutta la vita è un supplizio di Sisifo: mangiamo per avere di nuovo fame e facciamo la doccia per sporcarci di nuovo, giorno dopo giorno, fino alla fine.

Assurdo, non è vero? Albert Camus, filosofo e padre di un’intera scuola di pensiero chiamata assurdismo, la pensava così. Nel suo libro del 1942, Il mito di Sisifo, Camus individua in Sisifo l’icona dell’assurdo, notando che “il suo disprezzo per gli dèi, il suo odio per la morte e la sua passione per la vita gli valsero quella pena indicibile in cui tutto l’essere è proteso verso il non realizzare nulla”. Se questo non vi fa venire voglia di accendervi una sigaretta senza filtro, non so cosa possa farlo.

Sarebbe facile concludere che una visione assurdista della vita escluda la felicità e porti chiunque abbia un po’ di buon senso a disperare per la propria esistenza. Eppure, nel suo libro, Camus conclude che “bisogna immaginare Sisifo felice”. Può sembrare impossibile, ma in realtà questa svolta inaspettata nella filosofia della vita e della felicità di Camus può aiutarvi a cambiare prospettiva e a vedere le vostre lotte quotidiane in modo nuovo e più equanime.

La sofferenza infinita e l’infelicità sono intese come temi dominanti della vita nelle filosofie d’oriente e d’occidente. La prima nobile verità del buddismo è che la vita è sofferenza. Allo stesso modo, il filosofo cristiano del diciassettesimo secolo, Blaise Pascal, scrisse della nostra “costante infelicità” e dei futili sforzi per combatterla: “Gli esseri umani cercano il riposo lottando contro le difficoltà; e quando le hanno vinte, il riposo diventa insopportabile”. In entrambe le tradizioni, la felicità non è che una breve interruzione del triste ritmo della vita.

Short playlist for one of those long-feeling months. The description I put on the playlist was "aiming for a decent start" and that's the vibe. We got this! Chase and I have been talking about why Nick Lutsko's music always seems to hit for us, beyond him being very good at working skeletons into things and also using puppets, and it has come down to a specific realist-pessimism in tone that does not deny hope or optimism.

'Swinging On A Star' is featured (as sung by Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello) in the 1991 film Hudson Hawk, which is a charming film if one for a very specific audience.

"Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" is one of two Black Mirror episodes I've seen and I remain forever fond of it, probably due to the particular approach to the Nine Inch Nails covers.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a great doc, available on Archive dot org. His music has been threaded through a lot of my adult life.

The United States of America,

The White House, Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. President:

For the GOOD and true HONOR of our beloved country, the United States of America, in the NAME of ALMIGHTY GOD, LYNCHING should be abolished. Opinion seems unanimous that the United States Government possesses permanently the greater jurisdictional control (about 3/4) over each United States Citizen; and the State in which the citizen resides holds the remaining (1/4) jurisdiction.

Hence the elimination of LYNCHING, our most heinous STIGMA, should be accomplished through the Federal Government, because the respective States, for more than fifty years, have failed to suppress LYNCHING. Therefore, we urgently appeal to our honored President, and hereby PETITION him to URGE the enactment into LAW, during the Extra Session of Congress, of either Senator France's or Representative Dyer ANTI-LYNCHING BILL. By such worthy and magnanimous ACT, Mr. President, you will immortalize your NAME like the illustrious Lincoln when we signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Amen.

"...In 2021, two psychologists from York University, in Canada, found that forming parasocial bonds was strongly related to avoidant attachment. That is, people who tended to push others away in their day-to-day lives were more likely than others to relate to fictional characters, and especially to characters who are also emotionally avoidant.

"The research does not establish a causal link between avoidant attachment and emotional bonds with fictional characters. However, you can easily see how parasocial relationships could be a substitute when one finds real-life attachment difficult. This could start a feedback loop, in which avoidant attachment stimulates parasocial bonding, which in turn leads to diminished interactions with real-life family and friends as the fan spends their time and energy on someone who doesn’t know they exist."
