#Boss Spring 2020
Text
Back in your arms
Pairing: Checo Perez x Reader
Summary: Checo comes back to you after weeks apart and look forward to a future together.
Warnings: none
Notes: I haven't seen much content about him around here, and I find it a bit sad because I love him, so I contribute with this, any kind of interaction is appreciated
You and Checo have been in a relationship for four years, back when he raced for Racing Point and they met through their mutual friend Lance, so it's fair to say that your relationship had gone through some good times. and bad times, moments of uncertainty when he was left without a team in the 2020 season, unfounded news that sought to question your love and end your relationship and spend weeks apart. Even so, you have managed to work with your love and make a relationship strong and resistant to obstacles, appreciating and enjoying the moments together.
This time, you both spend weeks apart since your boss didn't gave you the days off you needed to acompany the mexican for the tripleheader he just returned home from.
Since he's back on your apartment and it's a lazy day, you both had a quick meal and the heat of spring in Mexico forces you to lay down on the balcony floor, taking advantage of your position, you see the landscape while you feel Sergio's hands go up from your arm to your head, undoing your hairstyle.
"Your hair is so soft" says contouring his face with your hair tips "the next grand prix, i'm taking it with me"
"Just my hair?" you teased while seeing his relaxing face
"Yeah, I missed it so much", he opens an eye to see your indignated expression
"Ouch", you continue "I won't let you do it"
"I'm not asking your permission, tonight while you sleep I'm gonna pass the shaving machine to your head and send your hair to an instagram page that makes wigs so I can take it with me to al around the world", he says playfully and you have to make an effort not to let out a laugh.
"You're so maleficent, Checo, wouldn't it be easier if you take me with you instead of amputing my hair?"
"Oh, that's a good idea too"
This time you don't try to avoid a reaction and start to crack up, by the time you both get to steady your breaths, you feel the intense look and full of love that Checo keeps on you.
"Mi amor, you don't know how bad I missed you"
"You've said it once or twice since you come back", you say trying to light up the mood .
"But really, ojitos, these weeks without you have been hell" he makes a small pout that you can't help but imitate. "You're not getting rid of me this spring break." He wraps his arms around you, burying his head in the crock of your neck.
"I missed you too, my big red bull", you teased caressing his back, "and I don't want to be away from you either" you promised kissing the top of his head.
The rest of the day was spent laughing and hugging, trying to plan the perfect vacation in which both your family and yours could be involved too, It came as a surprise to no one but you when in the final days of spring break he proposed to you.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Renewed For Two Seasons At Netflix; Live-Action Series Will Conclude With Season 3
Avatar: The Last Airbender, the anime-inspired live-action series, will be able to tell the story of the four nations: Water. Earth. Fire. Air after Netflix renewed it for a further two seasons.
The streamer has handed the show a two-season renewal order to conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar.
It comes after the show premiered on Netflix on February 22 and recorded 41.1M views in its first 11 days, topping its TV list for the last two weeks and being on track to enter its top ten most-watched list over its first three months.
The plan is to film these two seasons – seasons two and three – in close succession in order to mitigate the fact that child actors tend to grow up quickly.
The series comes from Rideback, whose boss Dan Lin, an exec producer on the series, was recently named Netflix’s new film chief, replacing Scott Stuber. Albert Kim is showrunner, having replaced original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko in 2020.
Its three season run will mirror the structure of the animated series, which featured three books across three seasons to Aang’s story that premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005, and became a hit on Netflix during the early stages of the pandemic.
It’s not clear how many episodes will be produced for season two and three. Season one features eight episodes.
Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world that is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. “Benders” are people that have the ability to telekinetically manipulate and control the element corresponding to their nation, using gestures based on Chinese martial arts. The “Avatar” is the only individual with the ability to bend all four elements.
The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world. With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope. But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young Air Nomad — and the last of his kind — reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar.
Alongside his newfound friends Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio), siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a quest to save the world and fight back against the onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way. Ken Leung and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee also star.
Kim and Lin exec produce produce alongside Jabbar Raisani, Lindsey Liberatore and Michael Goi. Goi and Raisani directed episodes in season one alongside Roseanne Liang and Jet Wilkinson.
It is Netflix’s second anime-inspired live-action hit after One Piece, following a rocky start in the genre with Cowboy Bepop. The streamer highlighted it as one of its latest successful adaptations, coming on the back of other IP-driven series such as The Sandman, Wednesday, Arcane and Sweet Tooth.
The creative team behind the series is keen to expand the story. Avatar executive producer and director Jabbar Raisani told Deadline that there’s stuff that they filmed that didn’t make it into season one.
“If we get another season, then we will certainly have those things, because I know what we missed now and I know how to do better the second time around,” he said. “The animated series is a really good guide…for where the show can go.”

Six of Crows Headcannons: what I think each crow would wear on the red carpet
I’ve been getting into runway fashion and couture recently, and I thought this would be a lot of fun, so here are my personal outfit headcannons!
Inej
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right/top to bottom: Nina Ricci Fall 2009, Chanel Spring 1992, Amit Aggarwal India Couture Week 2019)
Okay so Inej was super fun for me. My first thought was automatically something black and sleek like the first two, but then I thought she would love wearing something that is influenced by her culture, and I thought that green look from Amir Aggarwal would look stunning on her.
Kaz
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right/top to bottom: Hermès Fall 2014, Les Hommes Fall 2015)
Do I really need to say anything? You know he’s rolling up to that shit in all black. Period.
Jesper
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right/top to bottom: Gucci Love Parade LA, Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2022, Tom Ford Spring 2023)
Running in the exact opposite direction of Kaz, Jesper would 110% wear something outlandish and in a shade so bright it’s hard to look at. These were some of my favorites I could see him in.
Wylan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right/top to bottom: Sandro Spring 2021, Fear of God Seventh Collection, BOSS Spring 2019)
Wylan was difficult for me at first, then I got inspired and had a lot of fun with it. I think he would wear something simple, elegant and in his style. I love these looks a lot.
Nina
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right/top to bottom: Christian Siriano 2018, Alexandre Vauthier Summer 2019, Ziad Nakad Spring 2021)
Nina is in a similar vein as Jesper, I think, but probably a bit more sexy and refined. I chose the first one because it reminds me of her kefta! (and the model is plus sized!!)
Matthias
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From left to right/top to bottom: Corneliani Spring 2020, BOSS Spring 2020)
Matthias was definitely a hard one for me, because he doesn’t exactly strike me as a “fashion guy” lmao. But I think he would rock something white or light blue “like the ice in Fjerda.”

Case files 12.01
what I think happened in:
Case 12.01, the case of "Stag Hunter" or "Mr. Bonzo's toothy maw"
We need to talk about Gwen.
Full name Gwendolyn Bouchard, child of a rich family, strangely fixated on making career at OIAR of all places.
On 9th of January, after several years of exemplary if a bit slow work, she looked her boss dead in the eye and stated she wanted her job.
On 29th of January she received an email with a video of attempted murder (Lena on Klaus gun violence).
On 12th of February, after doing some additional research, she confronted Lena with the video. She assumed that Lena's superiors* wouldn't be happy to know that the 'murder' was a failed one. She let it be known that her source (singular) confirms that said mysterious superiors believe Klaus to be dead. As payment for her silence, she demanded to be let in on whatever extra operations were going on here. Lena graciously 'promoted' her to "Externals Liaison."
On Friday (March 8) Gwen received her first 'assignment' – to deliver an envelope to one Nigel Dickerson and 'any companion' of his that might be present. (So, glorified postal service).
On Saturday, (March 9) she got to meet her first 'External'. She was NOT prepared for the experience. She handed off the envelope as instructed. It got chewed in teeth that weren't soft. Mr. Bonzo the External lumbered away into the night, while somewhat shaken Gwen returned home.
Let's take a break from Gwen for a moment, to meet Ms. Jordan Bennett (age: early 20s). She's acquired bartending skills in 2020, and got hired at "Soho Jack's" strip-club in spring of 2021. Her employment there ended rather abruptly on Saturday night, 9th of March 2024. On that fateful night she was tending bar in a private suite on the third floor, where a Bachelor party was in full swing. The party consisted of (presumably) former high-school or college sports team, now in their 30s/40s, celebrating upcoming nuptials of their bud, Baz (full name unknown). (For now).
The chain of events was thus:
Somebody(/something?) planted a box of Bonzo merchandise among the presents for the groom.
Baz the Groom, a faithful Bonzo-fanboy, delightedly asked for the planted CD to be played.
Bonzo's theme-song started playing from the room speakers, and continued to play, getting louder, even after Jordan turned off the CD-player and disconnected the cables. (Later on it not only got louder, but also changed – from 'he wants to stay' in kids' voices to 'he's here to stay' in… different voices).
Summoned signalled by the music, Mr. Bonzo killed the bouncer guarding the room, and entered.
The party-guys did not notice the fresh body and were happy to see their favourite monster TV-mascot.
Mr. Bonzo somehow realized that the bartender did notice the body, and shushed her with a finger to his mouth.
Still unaware of danger, the guys found it hilarious when Bonzo picked up the groom by the arms and twirled him around like a toddler. They didn't even notice when
Bonzo ripped the man's arms right off. They did notice when Jordan screamed, and Bonzo tore Baz's head apart, and then pulverized and ate his body.
After that the guys tried to attack, without any real effect, aside from a trickle of some kind of stinking liquid from a cut (if it bleeds… can we kill it?).
After obliterating the groom Bonzo struck a playful pose, unfolded his mouth into a bigger, toothier maw and proceeded to bite chunks out of remaining people. Those who survived all lost something (Jordan's hand being the smallest loss). Those who didn't make it were devoured whole.
Notably, it seems that none of the people in the room tried to leave it, and none of the crashes, screams, nor the loud distorted music, were noticed by anyone outside the room; the security cameras weren't working either.
After the fact the club got sued for recompense by Jordan (and possibly other survivors and families of the deceased) and tried to get their insurance to cover it. Their claim was denied as fraudulent.
With that bit of unpleasantness out of the way, let's go back to OIAR.
On Monday, March 11, a very disgruntled Gwen confronted Lena again, this time about the nature of her assignment. Lena cheerfully advised her that screaming is good for the soul, that externals may be grotesque, but are valued assets, and that sleep is important. Also that Gwen should have already figured out whose name was in the envelope she'd delivered.
On Wednesday, March 13, Gwen's caseload included a graphic description of events of last Saturday at Soho Jack’s. She had… some kind of reaction, before Alice cut it off with a 'joke.' (btw, Alice's jokes sound more and more like 'shut up about stuff that can get us killed you idiot!')
There's a lot to unpack here, and I'm not sure if I want to touch most of it.
WHOSE name was in the envelope and why? At one point I considered a theory that the intended target was actually the Bartender (not to be killed, but maimed and traumatized), but as she wasn't the only survivor, just the 'luckiest' one, and she was way too young and poor to be Gwen's associate, I have to go back to option nr 1: The groom. Bonzo did zero-in on him upon entry, and only after completely removing him from this world did he change to more casual look and leisurely eating mode. (Work before play; at least he has good work ethics?) (No! Kill it with fire!) So. Why did 'Baz' have to die? Lena expected Gwen to know. Originally I was sure it was Colin or Alice, who both know too much. Since it's not them, the only thing that comes to mind is the 'source' who told Gwen that Klaus is believed to be dead. If a scary shady spooky government branch learned that they had a leak, they absolutely would plug it with excessive force and no consideration for collateral damage. Imagine you're Gwen, and you had a friend tell you something as a favour, and then you listen to a tale of how that friend got eaten by a creature you personally sent after him. 😬 Slightly more fucked up though less likely option: the 'source' was actually the bride-not-to-be. The Stag Night Massacre was a punishment and warning for both her and Gwen.
*Who actually are Lena's masters superiors? The ministerial prick who keeps nagging Colin about the app just… doesn't sound like someone who'd order a supernatural hit on someone. I have some thoughts, but they're too muddy to articulate just yet, so I'm moving on to:
Bonzo music. What is up with that? Nigel turned it on to call Bonzo to the door, and at the club he didn't come into the room until it was playing. Is the music just a way to get his attention, or is it like his Manchurian Candidate trigger phrase, turning him from Mr. Bonzo to Bonzo Butcher? Or is it just … part of Bonzo himself? It was getting more distorted and unsettling just as Bonzo was getting more monstrous in action and appearance. What was the cause and what was the effect here? Or: the music had to play, because it was the music that kept people from trying to run, and kept other people (and cameras) from noticing what was going on in there. So many options, so little certainty. :(
Gwen is now an accessory to murder, most likely of somebody she knew. I wonder what she's gonna do with that knowledge. Will she double down on "I can do it and I'm cool with it actually", or will she try to opt-out? (it's too late, but she could try…)
Unrelated: if at any point we meet a very angry young woman sans one hand, I'm doing the DiCaprio me

Metallica Anon here responding to Taxidermy Anon's roll call. I'm going to be a little more extensive with my post so grab a snack and a drink. I'm a 31 male and I'm 10 months older than Viv. My story began around November of 2019 when I was (and still am) a member of a forum related to a show that I used to love but completely lose interest in. (If you're wondering what show? Let's just say Blitzø would love it. 😉) Then I noticed a few members had this particular character as their avatars. That character turned out to be Angel Dust of Hazbin Hotel. My curiousity grew and I eventually watched the pilot. I was completely enamored with it. I loved the animation, the characters, the voice acting, etc. Not long after, I began watching Helluva Boss and soon became enamored with show as well. For nearly four years, I was quite emotionally attached to Viv's shows, almost at the level of the cartoons I loved from my childhood. For a while, I thought Hazbin and Helluva could be some of the greatest cartoons in history. Unfortunately, as Phil Collins once sang, something happened to on the way to Heaven.
Actually, three things happened. I'll explain each one.
The Long Wait for Hazbin Hotel: I don't know how or why I managed to hold on for so long, but I did. I've endured HH's signing to A24 in 2020, the voice actor replacement debacle in 2021, and the character "redesigns" in 2022. I remember in November of '22, I had two things to be excited for in '23: the new Metallica album in April and Hazbin in the summer. (At least one of the things happened.)
To occupy my mind, I binge watched a cartoons until Hazbin would air, which I assumed would be as early as June. When June came, a lot of us were expecting at least a trailer. What did we get?  A cheap Angel Dust picture! I think this is when my hype for HH began to deflate. Then in July, Viv announced HH would be delayed due to the WGA/SAG strikes. At first, I thought the reasons were understandable, but then found out A24 can promote their stuff during the strikes. This made me feel suspicious on what’s going on. Once summer ended, I officially gave up on Hazbin Hotel… then the trailer came out with a release date, which is JANUARY 2024!
Did the trailer reignite my interest? HAH! No! I’m wasting any more time waiting for this shit! But that’s not the only reason…
The Decline of Helluva Boss: Up until this year, I loved Helluva Boss. I enjoyed the shenanigans of Blitzø, Moxxie, Millie, and Loona. I would always find some enjoyment in every episode, even the bad episodes like “CHERUB” and “The Circus.” However, Helluva had long waits between episodes ranging from two to six months. Yet somehow, I endured because at least new episodes were coming out.
Then came the episode “Exes and Oohs.” I hesitated to watch it at first as some previews and clips I saw turned me off. Then I finally watched the full episode… and I absolutely hated it! Unlike the previous bad episodes of HB, I did not find ANY enjoyment in this episode. Then came the episode “Western Energy “and the same happened again. Hesitated to watch at first, finally watched it and absolutely hated it. I began to question myself on why I am I still watching this. Finally came the episode “Unhappy Campers,” and that episode was the final straw for me. That episode made me so angry that I wanted to smash my head into my laptop. Three strikes, you’re out!
Ever since that damn episode, I swore off Helluva Boss. I have not watched a new episode or even rewatched an old episode. It also got me thinking if HB’s writing is this bad, I believe HH’s writing will be just bad or worse. Now let’s get to the source of the shit…
Viv’s True Colors: For a long time, I did not know very much about Vivienne Medrano, her history, or who see really is. I simply viewed her as a regular person who somehow found success in independent animation…
Then came spring 2023 when I learned of the ErinFrost and KenDraws allegations against her by Ayy Lmao’s YouTube videos. Those allegations really got me thinking and my views of Viv began to change. Later in the summer, I began using my abandoned Tumblr account and I stumbled upon the Viv Critical community… and learned everything awful about Viv. Not only is Viv awful, so is her fanbase. I can honestly say that the VivziePop fanbase is probably the most toxic I have ever been in… and this is coming from someone who was apart of another infamous fanbase back in the 2010s. I mean, I have never seen a creator that encourages their fans to attack and send deaths to anyone who has even the slightest bit of criticism.
*sigh* This post has gotten too long so I’m gonna wrap it up. Fuck Viv, she’s a leper messiah. 🖕
-Metallica Anon 🤘
That was a great story, Metallica Anon. Sucks that it had to happen, but if it had to, glad you found your way here!

Undead Unluck Episode 3: How To Use My Unluck
Tumblr media
To be perfectly honest, this episode's boarding and animation through the first half (aside from the cold open)isn't near as good as the first two episodes. It jumps around, there's a lack of movement and interaction with the environment, and the content itself is filling the gap between point A and point B. That said, the second half is infinitely more interesting and has lots that I really want to talk about.
So let me talk cold open first since it's so important. Time is very heavily featured in the opening of the episode. However, while we do see the machinations of a regular clock, we also see an hourglass. Immediately, the idea of a doomsday that appears from the content of the first episode seems more and more likely as a "countdown" appears behind the work of the Union.
Tumblr media
Also, I may or may not be blind, but I'm assuming the spheres circling the hourglass are meant to represent the planets. For what reason I'm not sure exactly, but I feel like it makes the concept of a doomsday that much more likely.
Overall it's a really interesting piece that does not make sense in the context that Andy has given us so far. I mean, just looking at the two interactions from 1970 to 2020 and it doesn't feel right.
Back in 1970, the same year that Andy was originally caught, he's wishing Gina a happy birthday, and she's smiling at him? But now in 2020 he's ready to kill her and she's visibly frustrated with him? There's far more going on with the characters than just appearances, which is a great segue into Gina as a character and her negation.
I think the easiest context to think within is spacetime for Gina. It's been 50 years since she first captured Andy, and in terms of looks and whatnot she's not changed aside from makeup. She can also stand on water, control vast portions of matter, and survive in outer space (though it's unknown if that's for a limited or infinite amount of time). The one ability that I don't have confidence in being Gina's is when she produces a second easel for Fuuko. Considering the fact that she had a beret teleported to her (which may or may not have influence on her powers), the sudden appearance of an object can't be confirmed to be Gina's ability, so I'll chalk it up to whoever does the teleportation business.
Though I wouldn't think it anything as extreme as actual spacetime manipulation considering that a) she in fact wears makeup, and b) she references a boss above her. Both of these imply that her ability can't be something so overpowered, and that she's specifically an external targeting negator.
Furthermore, she can't use her technique on Andy directly, which means she most likely can't affect living objects in any fashion.
The first idea to spring to mind is 'unmoving', but that doesn't really fully grasp what Gina is doing. She's controlling matter to some degree, but I feel like the idea of 'unchanging' only really applies to her makeup. It's really quite hard to come up with the correct "un" terms for these negators, but aside from that I feel like I have a basic grasp of her abilities.
Actually, I just re-watched the clips for Gina at the end here, and I do think it's unchanging. Simply because instead of Gina saying that Andy will have to 'Kill' her, it's that he has to 'Change' her.
Anyways, I feel like there's a degree of significance here. The convenience in the order of operations and how they align feels far too on point. Fifty years after his initial capture, he runs into the same woman again? Right as he was talking about being captured? To me, it seems like at the minimum there's a negator with the ability to look into the future or something of the sort. The events themselves feel almost pre-ordained in the fact that all of these pieces are falling into place so quickly.
And then there's the UMA namedrop? I don't believe we'd heard of it before this episode, but Andy describes it as another facet of work that the Union does. If it's being handled by the union it'd have to be something to do with negation, no?
But it can't be people, because Union members refer to Negators as Negators directly, UMAs are something entirely different.
It's Unidentified something, but I don't know what that something is. It's not a person, so could it be an artifact or an animal or maybe even an affect or something of the sort?
I'm not sure, but it's one hell of a curve ball considering how quick they breeze right past it. Hopefully we'll get to see what this UMA is soon, because much like Gina and Andy's fate (could 'unfate' be a negator?), I think whatever a UMA is will have an important role to play in the story.
Anyways, that was a lot of talking and not a lot of showing, here are some pretty layouts from the episode.

One of my favourite boss battles I ran for the Murk campaign, a giant murk-corrupted elk. The party first encountered in the forest at day and spent a while following it around to a magic pool kind of thing. They stuck around to watch the sunset with it and then... uh oh, oh no, it transformed. 2020-02-09
The thing had a lot of parts, as you can see, and I can’t quite remember how it all worked. I think the tentacles were all one-hit kills but would regenerate after a turn. Unless removed with fire. I was proud of how the players handled it. They were overwhelmed at first but, luckily, the elk never left the safety of the spring it was on and the party could escape. They came back the next day for a rematch and had an amazing victory thanks to the patterns they learned.
There were two ways to kill it, reducing either the body or the core to 0HP. The body was a kind of, reliably easy enough to hit but had lots of HP. The core was heavily defended but, if they could get through to it, didn’t have much HP at all. This whole set up was inspired by how large bosses are handled in the Grandia series and I think breaking bosses into parts really solves a lot of issues with legendary actions etc. If I ever DM again I def want to play with this design philosophy.

How did you get into Earthworm Jim in the first place?
Oh it is a long and bittersweet story.
Spring of 2019, I was in 6th grade. I was at my mom's house, this was back when my best friend Tom, was dating my mother (that's how we met and became friends), and was watching some sort of WatchMojo countdown on my TV in my room (I think it was for funniest game endings) and Earthworm Jim appeared on #2. It immediately caught my attention. Something in me immediately wanted to know more about it. So I went downstairs and asked Tom (he was a twitch streamer so I figured he knew the most about video games) "What's Earthworm Jim?"
Tom was so excited he jumped up and told me "I'll tell you in the morning!" And so the next morning, he set up his Xbox One and sat me down to play Jim HD. I fell in love with the game immediately, I've only ever really played this kind of game I only affiliated it with Mario and DuckTales (I was a Wii U baby) and it felt more like DuckTales with the 2D animation. It spoke out to be as being unique being weird being funny I could use a gun, I can use myself as a whip! And it was challenging the levels were memorable. When I struggled my way to the end for the first time, I was so mad because I found out that Tom set the difficulty to me to easy so I didn't get the ending, that by the time he got home he heard me cursing and yelling from outside "FUCK YOU, I'M BEATING IT ON ORIGINAL." I played the game all over again.
Then, Tom showed me the cartoon in the summer. I was already into stuff like the Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain because it was on Hulu, so the Earthworm Jim cartoon hooked me. Not only did I love something but I love something with a friend, this was me and Tom's show, whenever mom would be sleeping for work (night shift), the two of us would go out to Popeyes, pick up some chicken (she prefers KFC), some root beer, (there is a local brand that has the absolute best and it was made with honey) and then watch the show together all throughout the summer. I very frequently borrowed his DVD.
Then it became fall and I was a 7th grader. I had the worst English teacher I could have possibly had, she wanted everything on paper if you go over to her to get some revisions on a computer she would demand that you print it you print it and then she points out the revisions so you have to type it out again and then you have to print some more. she tried to force paper on everybody including the parents, it was a nightmare. So while she had an audiobook on I started to doodle. And what was on my ASD laced mind?
Tumblr media
This. I wrote it down on tests and papers to let myself know that I was doing a good job. My doodles were not very good at first and I never really considered art because I just hated coloring originally. Then Christmas came, and I got given an Earthworm Jim lunch box, and it was my favorite Christmas present of that year. That Christmas was the last Christmas with Tom and my Mother...
And then came January of 2020. I went to Magfest on an invitation from Tom, I got to play the original version on a Super Nintendo and my mom was just laughing at me failing everything because even though I could beat the HD version easily I never touched the original. One night I accidentally left my journal at the dinner table and Tom found it, it was filled with Jim sketches. He immediately brought it to me and gave me constructive criticism and praise, I felt absolutely proud because I never really got complimented on that kind of thing before on something that wasn't math. One last grace before...
February of 2020. Tom and Mom broke up. Their relationship didn't work out for a number of reasons, and Tom had to leave to go somewhere to find a job. Before he left, he gave me his copy of the Earthworm Jim cartoon, installed Jim 3D on my mom's computer, and I gave him some traces I did of the Jim 3D bosses.
Then the pandemic happened right on my birthday, and right at the perfect age of turning 13, and having the ability to interact with the internet.
I'm sorry for the long ass story that's genuinely what happened.

on a dark bus home tonight I listened to this mix of things I made in 2020. I had only recently bought a computer interface and was spending time learning how to record things into garageband. I'm a visual artist by trade but that spring and summer I could barely draw at all. all I did was walk around, play guitar and synthesisers in the heat, and think of outfits to dream about. music of the precious pavements and footways that kept me well, and recordings of the very birds that did that too. all of my music ever is just about walking around. right now I've spent so much time thinking about the present and the future that it was nice to reflect, and kindly remember taking a modded Boss HM-2 to a Casio VL-Tone at 1am and letting the electricity jump right out at me

During the 2020 Colorado wildfires where we woke up each morning to singed pine needles on our cars and we had to wear masks outside because the air was thick with smoke, you felt truly helpless. It genuinely felt like the world was ending, especially when the fire only got a couple dozen miles from town. But I remember a conversation I had with my boss at the time, "It doesn't seem like it now, but the ash is full of nutrients and next spring will be lush and beautiful." Sure enough, the spring of 2021 was just that. The grass was neon green and the trees shone brighter than they ever had. There's something here about destruction but coming back even more beautiful in the next season.

this is my very favorite shit- database drama and people who can’t keep their email aliases straight
When Jeremy Kamil started to sequence samples of the rapidly spreading pandemic coronavirus in the spring of 2020, it was clear where he should deposit the genetic data: in GISAID, a long-running database for influenza genomes that had established itself as the go-to repository for SARS-CoV-2 as well.
Kamil, a virologist at Louisiana State University’s (LSU’s) Health Sciences Center Shreveport, says he quickly struck up a friendly relationship with a Steven Meyers, who used a gisaid.org email address. The two often exchanged emails and talked on the phone, sometimes for hours, about the pandemic and data sharing—but also about music, beer, and Saturday Night Live. Meyers said he had previously worked at Time Warner and had changed jobs after his boss at that company, Peter Bogner, launched GISAID in 2008. Meyers was born in Germany and living in Santa Monica, California, just like Bogner, whom he would call “our big boss” and “the Big Cheese.”
Over time, things got a little weird, Kamil says. Emails he sent to Meyers were sometimes answered from Bogner’s email account. “I used Peter’s account as writing on my little gadget was too treacherous,” was the explanation Meyers gave in one case. “I did ask though, first 😊.” Sometimes Bogner emailed Kamil about a topic he was discussing with Meyers at that very moment. Kamil offered to come to Santa Monica to meet Meyers on one of his trips to see his parents in Los Angeles, where they lived. But Meyers never seemed keen.
On 24 December 2022, when Kamil was again in Los Angeles, Meyers wrote that he would be “lucky this time around”: Kamil would have a chance to meet Bogner, along with GISAID in-house lawyer Ben Branda, in Santa Monica. Meyers himself couldn’t make it. Five days later, at a restaurant named R+D Kitchen, Kamil says he noticed Bogner had the same voice—with a hint of a German accent—as Meyers. “It wasn’t similar,” Kamil says. “It was identical.” It was the final nail, Kamil says: “I was duped.”

Styles’ role in Dunkirk grabbed Wilde’s attention as she was beginning to map out Don’t Worry Darling. He was an early contender for the role of Jack, a charming but secretive husband to Florence Pugh’s increasingly troubled Alice. And Styles had plenty of reasons to be interested in Don’t Worry Darling. Wilde’s second feature film as a director reportedly started a bidding war among 18 studios, following the success of her directorial debut, Booksmart.
Styles was announced as LaBeouf’s replacement a month before filming began. He proved perfect for the role of Jack, who’s brought Alice to the remote, fictional American town of Victory to work on a secret project the men at the company won’t tell their wives about. Jack’s become a star employee and is desperate for his boss’s approval. “We were looking for someone with innate warmth and palpable charm,” Wilde says. “The entire story depended on the audience believing in Jack.”
Styles shot Don’t Worry Darling between September 2020 and February 2021 in L.A. and Palm Springs. Those months were the longest Styles had lived in one place in 11 years. He thought about going completely off the grid while making it: maybe get a flip phone, stop making music. “The reality is you get there on the first day and wait around for 75 percent of it,” he says. “And it’s like, ‘Actually I’m going to text my mate.’ ”
At the start, he was understandably anxious about taking on such a large role alongside stars like Pugh, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, and Nick Kroll. “In music, there’s such an immediate response to what you do. You finish a song and people clap,” he says. “When you’re filming and they say ‘cut,’ there’s maybe part of you that expects everyone to start clapping, [but] they don’t. Everyone, obviously, goes back to doing their jobs, and you’re like, ‘Oh, shit, was it that bad?’ ” (Being an actor reminded him of session musicians: “You get called in to do your bit, and then someone else puts it all together and makes it.”)
The risk may pay off: He and Pugh are already getting awards-season buzz. Wilde says one moment “left us all in tears” — Jack’s promotion scene during a big company gala. “It’s a strange scene, full of fascist references, and a disturbing amount of male rage,” Wilde says. “The scene called for him to stand onstage with Frank (Chris Pine) and chant their creepy slogan, ‘Whose world is it? Ours!’ over and over again. Dark as hell. But Harry took it to another level. He was so fully in the moment, he began screaming the lines to the crowd, in this primal roar, that was way more intense than anything we expected from the scene.”
According to Wilde, Pine backed away, understanding this was Harry’s moment. “The camera operator followed him as he paced around the stage like a kind of wild animal,” Wilde remembers. “We were all gobsmacked at the monitor. I think even Harry was surprised by it. Those are the best moments for an actor — when you’re completely outside your body.”
