- for one, expect him to talk about you ALL the time to the group, he doesn’t even realize he’s falling for you until it’s suddenly full throttle. now you’re definitely not his first guy crush, he traveled that road with Rafe, but it’s one of his most notable ones. (along with quite a few confusing high school crushes)

- he’s incredibly understanding of anyone with different identities already. not to say it doesn’t confuse him a bit at first, but once he gets the grasp of it, expect him to be one of your main supporters in the office.

- if anyone were to misgender you in front of him, he’ll quickly correct them, and try to move on. if it persists? he’ll be sure to try and go over the change in pronouns to them. he’s very stern about this and doesn’t let up. (even with Glenn, which only manages to surprise you)

- okay so he’s always been lovable himbo, not a thought in his brain, but Nostalgia Max Brett? Thoughts be rolling.

- this is all with the context or at least pretense that Brett didn’t take over that town and trapped the gang in the 80’s — BUT I’m going to work the concept of him still having the powers and using them or being affected by them

- watching Brett getting taken over by whatever chemicals and chem trails were within the Nostalgia Max brew was frightening, deeply and concerning, setting that chill through your bones like an ice cube rattling in your spinal column.

- you were so relieved when Reagan got him to calm down and go back to normal, or - well, at least what you thought was normal. The lot of you head back to work afterwards, tired and ready for sleep in the modern age and tired of feeling like you got trapped as extras in a Stranger Things episode.

- except you don’t go home just yet, you’re fretting over Brett who insists he’s fine and feeling okay but his eyes are twinkling green, swirling neon hues of emerald and peridot unnerving you. You and Reagan take him down to her lab, letting her run tests as you pace back and forth and warily eye the still-displayed parts of Robotus that linger on the walls, trying to calm before you roll yourself into a panic attack.

- turns out he’s fine, no radiation threats or concerns to worry about, but he’s now got powers. So much for halting that Stranger Things feeling. Brett and Reagan don’t know how they’ll manifest, but it’s something time will demonstrate. For now he gets to go home and he doesn’t go to his, he goes back to yours, shushing your worries and holding you close.

- that glint in his eyes fades away from the forefront of your mind, other worries and occupational concerns taking place until you’re all on another ill fated fieldtrip and off doing something else for the company, and you get held up in the crossfire. There’s a series of guns pointed at you, sadly not the first nor last time this occurs, but disheartening nonetheless.

- Everyone’s trying to calm down the situation and make sure you get out unscathed and nobody realizes Brett’s panicking until he’s not anymore. He’s eerily calm and staring straight ahead with fists clenched, Reagan goes to grab his shoulder to talk about how to get you out but she’s met with those acid green eyes, like green apple candy, and a cold expression so neutral it’s unnatural on Brett’s usually grinning visage.

- it’s so fucked it’s just beyond

- he just waves a hand and this glow, that watery green that looks like seepage straight from a nuclear reactor cooling pond, just whips in a wet thwick that sends necks angled cruelly, snapped with as much ease as breaking a pencil, and guns clattering to the ground.

- Brett’s blinking blearily before shaking his head, hair that was once floating now resting back on his head in a disheveled style as he races towards you and envelops you in his arms, making sure you’re okay and unscathed.

- meanwhile Glenn’s using every single southernism cursing phrase he knows, confused to all fuck, Andre and Myc are just both entertained and mindfucked thinking they roofied again, Gigi’s popping an antacid and a sedative muttering about how she should’ve got to work for the Illuminati, and Reagan’s going around to inspect the crooked bodies and talking to herself as she makes notes aloud, wondering just how this power has manifested.

- Reagan does find it very fitting that the powers manifested in a time of great stress, the second you were put in danger. God is he an utter fucking himbo.

- it’s not a power Brett can fully control, it kinda sets him into a subconscious state where it’s not a part of his mind that’s fully aware, but it’s sparked by very strong emotions, threats, and feelings of danger around him or directed at him. He likes to joke he’s got a nostalgia-sense instead of a spidey-sense but you’re still reeling and wondering why he’s now just a bit more attractive. (it’s the messy hair you’d never seen it, plus he killed for you and that’s also something)

mr. hand will not so subtly drop hints about his wants for the future

it's early morning; approximately 5 am. the deep purple of the sky seeps its way into your shared room. the crib standing out as the new addition.

your ginger husband holds you. his warm and built chest against your back as you lay on his left arm. his right hand running it's thumb over your grown belly. the three of you awake (the little one making sure of that) but not up, admiring the peace before the day begins.

"i'm so lucky." he whispers; you can hear his golden smile in the way he talks. "i can't wait to be a good father."

"really?" you ask. sarcasm is heavy with your tone; but there isn't any menace behind it. you already know he's going to be amazing.

"mhmm." his hand cups ever-so-slightly. he does this when he talks to the baby. "i'll cook you yummy dinners, help with homework, go to your games- or recitals- or concerts!, help pick up your toys, play catch, everything. and anything."

he hums adoringly and holds you closer. it's in that moment you just know.

he's panicky when it's go time. he has the brown, paper sack for breathing, and the bags filled of everything (the internet said you needed) for the hospital.

the delivery was LONG but the baby arrived all safe and sound!

you and brett shed quite a few tears upon seeing the entirely new person the both of you created

he was SOBBING

the first couple of nights were really rough; especially when it came to adapting to the new sleeping schedule (or lack of)

but as time went on, the two of you learned!! and the experience became easier

the baby likes to eat!! a lot!!!

brett takes the night shift when it comes to feedings and changings, he insists!

when the baby just wants to cuddle at 2am, you can hear brett humming while rocking them

once it's been a few months, brett has to make the decision on wether or not to go through with completely quitting his job and taking care of your little family

he wants to. every cell in his body is screaming at him to take the plunge and never look back!!

but he works for the government in all it's evil glory, would they even allow him to quit?

he calls reagan and asks for advice. she's his bestie and would definitely at least give good advice.

unfortunately this is where he finds out that only way to leave his job is to get fired 😭 just because of how much of a huge secret it is

he quickly thinks of ways to make that happen before deciding otherwise

but !! she tells him that since he's pretty enough, he could convince JR to let him work from home. most of his job is inspiring his co-workers and he doesn't always need to be in person to do that

after begging on his knees, sobbing having a serious discussion about the future, brett's able to work from home!!

there is one condition; the children and the workplace must stay SEPARATED

My smile is immeasurable- I do this so often you have no idea. I have absolutely been worried about not knowing if I was gonna do the request just right. This is not one of those times. I feel like she understands, I could see her thinking of it more in a like, a logical sense? Not like she doesn’t understand the more emotional side of it- she’s got her own issues. She gets it, and I want to be absolutely clear- I cannot see her being one of those people saying “It’s fine.” Because like, for her it doesn’t feel like it ever really is? I can see Myc start by just being a little bit sarcastic. Like he isn’t entirely sure why you do it just yet, but he doesn’t want you to be saying it and thinking that you did something wrong.

He gives those like “Oh yeah? You’re sorry?” and you know that if he had actual eyes, he would be giving you a look of ‘You really wanna do this rn?’.

And he will probably continue to do so even after he knows why.

He isn’t going to treat you differently per se, at least- he acts like he isn’t going to…

But you feel the tentacle that was already wormed around your waist squeeze just a little tighter before you end your sentence to remind you that you didn’t do anything, and you don’t need to apologize. 

I mean he gets it, he got bullied. He ended with a different outcome for himself, but he still understands. It sucks, and even if you don’t want to think about it or you don’t want to constantly feel like life is repeating itself over and over again but sometimes it’s just going to feel that way even if it isn’t.

Though Myc will be there to help you understand and work through all the woes of getting to inside your own head.

She would raise her brow at it at first.

It was a shitty day at Cognito. Brett had been feeling extra pissed at the gang lately and stormed to his office, which was odd. Reader knew this was weird for him. They had been dating for a little over a year now and she had never seen him this angry. She slowly made her way to his office, getting stopped by Myc,

"Hey reader, a little caution to you, Bretts being an asshole today." He said and laughed, "He's acting like a toddler."

You roll your eyes and go to his office and gently knock on the door, "Brett..? Hey love I just wanted to check on you. I saw you storm off earlier."

He let out a small groan, "I'm fine Reader." he said in an odd dismissive tone which made you slightly confused,

"Are you sure Brett? I mean.. You don't sound fine, not to press I'm just worried.." you say with a gentle tone.

You immediately went to Gigi, fully in tears, and she immediately ran to you, "Jesus reader whats goin' on?" she said and lightly held your shoulders

You try and talk through hic's and sobs, "Brett.. He y.. He yelled at me and he.. Was mean about it.. I've never seen him mad.. I was just trying to help..." you stuttered and sobbed

You woke up a few hours later with a blanket over you, and some water on the coffee table. You smiled slightly and sat up to see him sitting on the other side of the couch, knees pulled to his chest. You stood up and sat next to him, "Brett" you said softly and watched him

His eyes widened slightly and you could tell he too had been crying. His look went from slight surprise to sadness,

"Shit reader I'm-"

"Brett I know you're sorry. I knew something was wrong.. I knew you weren't okay and you would never be mean to me on purpose. I don't blame you. Cognito is such a stressful place to work, and the people there tend to be a bit difficult so I know you didn't mean a thing." you said and gently rubbed his arm

His eyes filled with tears as he tightly wrapped his arms around you and sobbed into your chest, "I'm so so sorry I didn't mean to be so awful.." he said in a high pitched almost whimper as you gently rubbed his back,

"Shh.. I know,, I know.. I forgive you Brett.. I forgive you, I love you so much.." you softly coo'd as he pulled you into his lap and rested his head in the crook of his neck and just held you

You both ended up falling asleep on the couch, clinging to eachother like life support and just being glad you were together.

The first time Brett meets your whole entire family he’s excited but super nervous and anxious he just wants them to like him.

Even though you tell him it’s not a big deal and it’s just a family dinner he’ll still go out of his way to buy gifts for each and everyone of your family members.

Brett will almost be having a heart attack before even entering the house but when your aunties open the door he’ll be caught by suprised by being smothered by all your aunts!

Immediately inviting him in and completely disregarding you (lol) your whole family will ambush him with questions about himself and silly ones like how’d you ever pull a guy like him.

Brett gets his fair share of time with the adults and aunties who loving squeeze his cheeks and laugh at all his jokes. But he also spends time with all the littles, all your cousins and your siblings playing games and chasing them around. Like hide and seek, some tag and some sports too.

Your mom, grandma and aunts will steal him away to show all your embarrassing photo albums and pictures from when you were a baby and so on.

And When it’s time to eat your mom makes sure Brett’s the first to have a plate that’s plenty full.( I mean like over the brim full) Of course Brett being the sweetheart he is eats all of it even when he feels wayyy to full.

Your whole family plays your favorite traditional games together at the end of the evening and you help Brett throughout all the games understand how to play and all the rules.

And when it’s time to leave all your aunties will once again smother Brett in their arms and squeezeing tightly his cheeks asking him to promise them he’ll visit as soon as possible. And the goodbyes would last about a few extra minutes with all the kisses and hugs they give him.

By the end of it all Brett would end up crying when the two of you are finally alone and when you ask what’s wrong he’ll sob explaining how loving and generous your family is, as he never had that feeling before it was such an overwhelming love that it’s making him cry. You hug and comfort him (and even cry a little yourself too.) but it’s safe to say he’s even more excited for the next time he gets to see your family.

Brett had always been accustomed to giving more love than recieving it. From his siblings, his parents, childhood friends and fraternity brothers. Even coworkers. But working with Cognito Incorporated opened his heart a bit with how he got to receive love, true affection back.

The one who cracked that well-guarded heart was you.

He was not immediately enamored by you. Not so say he didn’t find you incredibly awesome and cool, someone he immediately befriended and got along with. Brett just hadn’t fallen in love with you immediately.

That’s not to say it didn’t take long for him to actually develop feelings, strong ones, that had him pining after you wistfully in a manner that irritated the fuck out of each and every member of the gang. Andre was this close to just throwing a bunch of illicit drug recipes together in attempts to create a love potion or something adjacent.

He was this close to being nothing but a literally lovesick puppy, trailing and tripping over your feet and eager to get any meagre amount of attention and affection from you. Brett would literally lie his head on your knee or lap while you worked at your desk if he could, and just beam up at you.

He’s sick in the head. The good kind. Lovesick.

Throughout all of this, he thinks you’re just oblivious to him or don’t really know him. Think of him as a stranger. The truth is quite the opposite, with you being incredibly interested and intrigued by the man. Finding him charming and sweet, complete package looks and personality wise. No one’s got a bad word to say about him.

That and he’s the type to lend you an umbrella when it’s pouring when he’s only got the one between the two of you. That’s because he did.

You had stayed late working on a report for your department that got lost in the shuffle and needed to be expedited, forgetting the time and hurrying out only to find the parking lot in a down pour. While mentally bracing to make a run for it, you catch Brett Hand extending his umbrella and offering it.

“You can have it! My car’s closer than yours is, makes sense that way.”

And you’re about to offer just sharing it and walking together but the man carries on, rambling about how you can even keep it if you want and he flushes before dashing out, drenching himself in a mad dash for his car truly not parked to far away. Sadly, rain still dealt harshly on his button down.

Luckily for you, you got a glimpse of his shirt when drenched, understanding the appeal of wet t-shirt contests immensely now that you fell into a stupor just looking at his chest.

He tucks into his car, seating himself in the drivers seat and buckling before taking a second to check his mirrors — he’s that great of a driver? Where did he come from, an L.L. Bean catalogue?— and starts the radio before turning back to glance at you, sitting underneath the lip of the building entrance and shrouded from the rain. He waves.

You wave back.

Brett doesn’t pull out of the parking lot and he gets confused looking at you standing there before you realize with one of those “oh shit I’m being stupid” moments that you need to go to your own car, go on home, and he’s waiting to make sure you get out okay. As you unfold the umbrella and lift it overhead and step out into the rain, you make a note of visiting the cloning department to ask about Brett and whether he’s real or not.

You lose yourself in thought but make it to your car, stepping into the drivers seat in a mirrored motion similar to Brett and do your routine, turning the car on and checking the mirrors and backseat, turning the radio on then pulling up navigation. And as you tuck the closed umbrella against the shotgun seat, you glance back and see Brett scrolling through his phone and glance up to catch your eye and he smiles, waves again cheerily.

Good lord he’s not real. Did Hallmark start back up their cloning company again? It’s not Christmas yet.

You put the car in drive, passing his in the parking lot as you pull out to the main road leading to the highway for your route home. You try not to think of him when you sing along to the radio when the lyrics of love songs catch your throat.

Brett sees you alone the next week, not catching an eyeful of you between the rainy day and now. He can’t take his eyes off you and he nearly overflows the coffee cup in his hand in the communal kitchen.

You look so lovely and he’s trying to figure out what you have done with your hair and then the next he knows you are already on your way and walking up to him.

“Hi Brett.”

“Hi!”

He’d shoot himself in the foot if he could.

You look amused at how his tone lifted in pitch when he saw you, bright smile unwavering and shift on your feet. “I wanted to thank you for the other day and wanted to make you something — and it’s completely fine if you don’t like it! I won’t be offended.” You’re lying through your teeth.

Brett flushes crimson, pretty pink on his tanned cheeks and tugs his lip between his teeth, smiling like a child and his eyes get wide with joy, thinking you at least have to like him somewhat to make him something.

“You didn’t have to do that! Going out of your way and everything, but I’m sure I’ll love it. I don’t know how there could be anything you could make that I wouldn’t love.”

While he’s berating himself for almost just confessing all his feelings, you’re trying to not let your heart unravel and pool at your feel like an upturned spool of twine.

You shift and remove your hands from behind your back, revealing a bundle of fabric in this lovely apricot shade. His favorite color — orange. It’s tied with a big bow, one of those wired ones from the craft store, something personal about it that has his tummy seizing and twirling at the same time. God he could cry.

He tunes back in, eyes glancing between the bundle of fabric in your palms and up to your lips that move, and he’s just entranced. Bewitched. Ensnared.

“- like to crochet sometimes, it’s fun and it keeps my hands busy and my mind empty. But I hope you like it, Gigi told me it was your favorite color and I wanted to repay you.”

“Can I hug you?”

“What?”

You quite nearly drop the scarf you made for him when you hear Brett speak and hold yourself back from screaming yes but just manage a nod and a somewhat timid smile, muttering a sure that makes both of your grins wider.

He smells like old spice and old fashioned cologne, like hand cream and coffee, feels like a dream and his arms wrap around you and you want to cling to them and beg him to never let go.

Instead you don’t, you hug him back, and say nothing about the tears that flick at the collar of your shirt’s neckline and how he tugs you so close. You just run a hand through his hair and hum, unworried about the scarf pressed between you and your worries for if you’d ever get to be close to him.

You already were, and with the strong arms wrapped around you, you felt tied and strung to him, utterly hooked. With his head on your shoulder and feeling his watery smile there against your pulse, you had no worries. No loose threads.

You just felt him.

Random Brett Hand S/O Headcanons

Brett’s the kinda guy to take you on either really classic dates (straight from the movies. ex: a candlelit dinner) or a “weird” date (something you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a man. ex: going shopping at the malls)

He makes a playlist about you as soon as he catches feelings. (he is so me)

He gives the best hugs. Brett just gives the most comfy and secure hugs.

He LOVES holding hands. He’ll do it subconsciously all the time, but he tries to remember to ask first (if it bothers you). He definitely does the thumb thing.

His love language? This is a tough one because I feel like all of them would fit him, but I think it’d be words of affirmations. Although, he does enjoy going out to find you the best gift, or even just making something for you in his free time.

Are you artsy? Great! You two spend some time together just working on your own projects. Him on his puppets or crafts, you on whatever it may be that day. ADHD term is body-doubling, I don’t know if it applies but I feel like it does. Either way, you two are spending quality time together. (i’ve got adhd hah)

You’re not artsy? That’s okay! Brett may try and convince you to make a craft with him, maybe even Legos, but if all this fails, he doesn’t mind. This just means more crafting for him.

Regan reeks of a burnt-out gifted kid it's because that's what she is SO I'd imagine that she would be incredibly good at helping you figure out all that shitty 'welcome to the company keep us a secret or we disappear you' papers. Like she knows why there are so many but it can get overwhelming for a first-timer to read about all the ways your employer can see in on your life when you aren't paying attention and also how many ways they plan to kill you.

She would be vaguely interested in your outside life, maybe not as much as some of your other coworkers so it may not come up as often as either of you would like compared to general water cooler conversations.

Okay sweet girl would try and be entertaining or fill the quiet with jokes or something and it would absolutely come out like a threat SHE'S TRYING SO HARD SHE DOESN'T MEAN IT.

Being normal doesn't always mean being boring. He is invested in finding out what interesting secrets hide within the walls you've put up.

So okay, he will genuinely try and help you around if he's tasked to. He can show you the places you need to be and introduce you to a handful of cool people HOWEVER he will sit back and laugh as you experience the madness. He enjoys the confusion and probable moral panic.

He won’t leave you floundering though. Andre is a talker, the tour will be full of weird info he knows but he will also be asking you questions about how you ended up here like the whole time? He’s just a curious lil fella :) 

Also would be someone to lounge in your office, if you don’t have anything to decorate it off the bat he might think it’s a little bit boring however he won’t say anything. But you may start noticing more small and funky novelty objects appearing in your office.

Helpful in his own special Myc kinda way, like a little bit of an asshole about it but not so much that it feels like he’s being a total dick? He’s still helpful but he’s using terms from Cognito that you definitely do not understand yet. He’ll explain it son, he just wants to watch you squirm for a minute as you try and figure it out what the fuck he’s talking about.

His tour would be like some emotional rollercoaster? You don’t really know what’s going on here so he’s going to fuck with you. Hyping up what’s beyond this door as some big scary bad thing and it’s not, it’s just craft services- it’s just to amuse himself.

Simillar to Andre in that he will laugh and tease you about shit, but he will absolutely have more amo because of the whole mind reading thing? More stuff akin to him mentioning Brett’s lovely memory of Dane Cook routines in episode 1. It’s just the Myc special baby well one of them anyway ;)

The tour would probably be surprisingly thorough? Especially his section and Andre’s! He knows the most about those two places so that isn’t the most shocking? Though some of the other places get the bare minimum knowledge.

He would also be able to show you the best places for napping, Old man naps <3

There might be a little less said, but what is said is important. So if he gives someone or something a compliment know that he means it.

I mean he was a normal man once, he still kinda is? Y’know minus the dolphin stuff? So if you need someone to hash it out with when the company gets too much you could come to him. If he likes you enough he might let you launch a missile somewhere- please have restraint. Please.

Always do! (Season 2 spoilers + poly Reagan headcanons) -After Reagan found out about Brett's love for puppet making, she gave up part of her home office for Brett to use. -And Gigi let him help on some of the shows they control, so he can put his puppets to use so they don't just sit on a shelf all the time. -I feel like Andre would slowly help Glenn realize that he's not entirely straight. (In s1 e1 Myc said 3 people in the room were attracted to Brett and Glenn got really defensive about it.) -Brett was there for Reagan after the whole Ron situation, he might not have entirely liked him at first but he knew how Reagan felt about him. -Brett and Reagan's apartment is covered in Brett's favorite boy band posters, and there's like one bill nye poster he got for Reagan. -Their apartment is covered in fidget toys, weighted blankets, and so many fucking stuffed animals(mainly squishmallows). Brett was the one who suggested they get this stuff at first, and obviously, Reagan was hesitant at first because she didn't want to waste money on things she didn't think would work for her, but they ended up helping her a lot. -They do not have metal silverware, they have those rubber ones made for toddlers and stuff because neither of them can stand the noise of it scratching against the plate. -They also have those plates with separate parts on them, it helps Reagan get full meals in her instead of just eating a bag of Deli meat for lunch and dinner.

Reagan, Brett, and Ron w/ a friend who’s scared of the dentist

fandom: inside job

warnings: mentions of dentaphobia, medicinal drugs, dental work, etc.

a/n: I just randomly started writing this like a half hour before I got two fillings

Reagan

to some degree, she totally gets it, the dentist is not fun

she had some dental issues as a kid, so she’s been there

if you have an appointment for anything other than a cleaning, she can tell just by looking at you

I’m not sure if she’ll go into the room with you, but she’ll definitely be there for you when it’s all done

if it’s an extraction and you were given a lot of painkillers, she’ll watch over you until it wears off, making sure your back and head are elevated when you go to sleep

Brett

I can see Brett being the kind of guy who’s very meticulous about taking good care of his teeth

mostly because he probably also dreads needing dental work

if you need the emotional support, Brett’s your guy

first of all he’ll make sure you don’t psych yourself out too badly

And will be right there with you (if it doesn’t get in the way of anything)

he’ll let you near crush his hand if you need to until it’s all over

reminding you that it’s going to be okay, and it’ll be done before you know it

if you’re still dizzy from the numbing meds the dentist gave you, he’ll put on something relaxing for you like an animal documentary

Ron

I think Ron would be relatively okay with going to the dentist, but it’s not exactly something he looks forward to

when he finds about about your phobia, he doesn’t totally get it at first, but he can tell how much it freaks you out

to a point, he understands. especially if you’ve had some not-so-great experiences w/ it in the past

one time he stayed with you while you got a filling, and that was probably the most relaxed you’ve ever been in the office

if it was something big and you were really drugged up for it, he’ll probably record you while you’re dizzy
