Say "NO" to Genocide - Call, email, mail your reps (Canada)

Me and my friend spent some time today writing letters to the House of Commons, plus we have been calling MPs daily. I haven't seen too many resources for this floating around on tumblr, so here's a lengthy guide on how to do this plus some sample scripts! Long post ahead since I think it will be most helpful to dump everything in one spot to reference. On desktop, use CTR F/CMD F to search for the topic -> Phone / Email / Letter Mail / Contacts / Demands / Scripts / Fax

On the PHONE / General Tips

Introduce yourself and identify yourself as a constituent by providing your postal code or address.

Ask to speak to the MP directly, but do not be surprised if you must speak to the MP’s staff instead. Staff can help move your issue forward.

Give the reason for your call and explain your concern.

Focus on one or two main concerns per phone call. Do not unload on the MP or their staff with all of your political concerns at one time.

Ask clear and pointed questions that require some explanation.

Ask for a commitment to action.

KEEP IN MIND Tips for Calling MPs:

Tell the MP that this issue will matter to you in the next election.

Avoid revealing party affiliation or sympathies. If you show that your vote is already cast for a certain party, the MP may not have the incentive to respond to your requests.

Be as brief as possible while outlining concerns.  Show that you respect their time.

Remain calm and respectful in dialogue. Be willing to work with them.

Follow up: Find out what actions were taken as a result of your call, and respond appropriately.

CJPME Call Tool - Fill in the form, there will be suggested talking point. The tool will call your phone and then patch you through to your MP. If voicemail, state your concerns in 30 seconds. No address input will default you to call Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly.

EMAIL

Be sure you sign your email with your name and mailing address so they know you are a part of their riding.

You will most likely receive a PR-type response or no response at all, but please still send these. It disrupts operations, and it still contributes to pressuring your MP to act on behalf of your riding.

LETTER MAIL

Mail may be sent postage-free to any member of Parliament at the House of Commons address. You just need to use an MP's full title if they are Cabinet members. Cabinet mebers have "The Honourable" attached to their names.

Postcards are efficient in that they are small pieces of card stock and can be a short message plus demands, no need to get use envelopes.

✦Just Friends by @kneelingshadowsalome Salome is so good at capturing a very unique interplay between König’s social awkwardness and his deep, dark, nasty inclinations. He’s so feral and enjoyable to read, and the sheer force of his desire for Engel is downright intoxicating. I find it difficult to describe how much of an impact Just Friends has had on me and my portrayal of König, to be honest. There's a reason why three of Salome's fics are on this rec list.

✦Fatum Nos Iungebit by kneelingshadowsalome Five words. König with his cock out. That's it. Okay, but in all seriousness, I love his character applied to this setting. All the raw visceral violence a König could ever want, a pretty little lady in his bed—he's so boyish and happy in this au it brings me such joy. The way their relationship between him and Fee develops is so natural and so sweet. Please for the love of God read this.

➠Cat/Mouse/Den by @papaver-decervicatus The chase. The pursuit. The adrenaline when Mouse dances out of König's reach once more. I'm a little biased because I adore Julius and Jenny (I could call her Lucretia but the double J names make me giggle) as ocs already, but CMD is so, so well written. The tension, the flirting, the scene where he catches her falling out of the tree?! As I said in a reblog, I shrieked. You know when you're reading something that's so good you want to bite down on it and shake like a dog with a toy? (No? Just me?) That's how I feel about CMD.

➠Anything by @darklordofthesimp Anything, in only 7 chapters (they are hefty, don’t get me wrong), has turned König and Birdy’s dynamic from “THIS MOTHERFUCKER HAS IRREVERSIBLY SCARRED MY BODY AND MY BRAIN, AND I CANNOT TRUST HIM” to “these two are going to get married someday”. (author if you’re reading this, I say that not as an expectation or prediction, but as a vibe reading.) This one is for the hurt/comfort girlies. Also, shoutout to all the other stories set in the Anything-verse. Sunshine and Ghost are just soooo *grips my hand in a fist so hard it shakes*

➠If you need to be mean by @gremlingottoosilly This mostly serves as a blanket recommendation for all of Gremlin’s fics. I found If you need to be mean, and then visiting Gremlin’s author page was like opening a treasure chest. Want to be König’s pampered, (unwilling) little housewife? That’s If you need to be mean. Want a harem fic with almost all of the COD MW men? Gremlin has two, both with their own little spin to keep it fun. Do you want König to keep you in his basement or hunt you down as a serial killer? Gremlin's got it. Monsterfucker? Gremlin has that too. Special shoutout goes to 1295 kilometers. I think about fucking König on a train a lot now.

➠Break my mind by @kaiasdevotion (kaiasown on ao3) There’s no way around this. This fic has the most unhinged, kinky, downright dangerous smut I’ve read in the cod fandom so far (positive). Just Friends König is the metric by which I judge all other Königs’ nastiness, and Break my mind König is tipping so hard on the “unhinged horny violent freak (affectionate)” end of the scale he’s about to fall off. I don't know if you guys have noticed, but I've developed a taste for writing/reading from König's perspective, and he's so chillingly deranged in the most controlled way possible during the chapters from his pov. Incredible writing. Chefs kiss.

✦Experimental by @uhohdad (surgeoninspace on ao3) Alright, enough of just König being nasty. He is still nasty in this one, but he’s not the only one who gets to have a little fun and be a total creep. Our little scientist here is a grade A pervert, and I was delighted the whole way through. The most important thing I need in a fic is suspension of disbelief, and Experimental takes an unrealistic, maybe a little bit silly situation and makes it so believable. Everybody reacts the way you would expect them to, even if the scenario they're in is A Lot.

➠Little Mouse and Rotes Madchen by @sprout-fics I'm combining the recommendation for these two because while they are both very much distinct, unique fics, I love them the same way. Sprout is such an engaging writer, and the internal dialogue of her characters is so well done. It reveals their personality, motivations, and internal conflicts without being overly expository. Do you guys remember that post I put on the König bible about instant obsession? It's this inexorable attraction borne from obsession that sticks me to Little Mouse like a glue trap. (Is that too morbid?)

✦Hot in Sarajevo by @50cal-fullauto Rags' König characterization post is on my Königcore bible, for very good reason. They get it. König is a feral dog forced to live as a man and loves like a total maniac, emotionally and sexually. I marked Hot in Sarajevo as complete but I don't know how many parts there are going to be, and frankly, I do want more. However, if you're going to only read one part (which. why would you do that??? read both.) I recommend the second part. I want to write love like that. Goddamn.

Yeah, this list is a little bare bones right now. I'm gonna get back to it, I promise.

✦Anhedonia by kneelingshadowsalome The way. Salome takes the "I would take a bullet for him but he's so cold to me" premise and then flips it entirely on its head for the second part is so important to me. The way Simon craves the reader is like human catnip. I reread this fic all the time.

✦Easy by @danibee33 When people say "I wish this were a book!" about fanfiction, they usually mean it in a "this is good enough to be published by the traditional publishing industry" way. When I say I want Easy (and Diablesa) to be a book, I mean it in a "I want to get this story bound in a beautiful ass cover and keep it on a shelf so I can take it down and reread it whenever I want" way. I don't want the traditional publishing industry to get their claws in this, because it's perfect as it is. This fic is so wild and fun, and the character moments are so special and well done. Do yourself a favor and savor this one.

➠@ghouljams's entire blog [masterlist] "What do you mean someone's entire blog" YOU HEARD ME. Those aus are some good shit. Good characterization, delicious premises, love the group effort of it all. To absolutely nobody's surprise, my favorite couple is König and Bee from the cowboy au (ditzy but well-meaning and competent in her own way woman x big strong man who is obsessed with her and maybe also creeping on her, my beloved), but I also have a fondness for Ghost and Die from demon darlings au. Trust me on this one. Dig into those masterlists babey.

Which is a great description, and also an accurate assessment of the palace skelm. Although it's obvious that Grima Wormtongue is also a major influence on this PF2e monster. The fact that palace skelms and red hags are the same CR and would absolutely hate each other is the icing on the cake for me.]

Palace Skelm CR 8 LE Monstrous Humanoid This humanoid figure is almost human, except for the pair of gleaming antlers growing from his skull. He is dressed in fine noble’s clothing.

Palace skelms are creatures that delight in the corruption of power. They often are found among military officers and politicians, some of whom transformed into skelms in that position. Palace skelms spend their time either jockeying for power or abusing the power that they do have, treating their subordinates with casual cruelty. A palace skelm is an excellent liar, and they can even insert their words into the mouths of others. They encourage competition, jealousy and paranoia in any court they find themselves in, turning functioning governments into a den of vipers to exploit. They are ostentatious by nature, and frequently flaunt their wealth and status with finery.

Most palace skelms prefer to exert power from behind the throne, ingratiating himself to a ruler and warping their perceptions so that they only trust the skelm. Coups and political upheavals are dangerous for palace skelms, as they simultaneously allow for more opportunities to inflict suffering while increasing the risk of the skelm’s true nature being exposed, or of the skelm losing their grasp on what power they have. Palace skelms have a tendency to self-sabotage, as their interlocking schemes can spiral out of their control, and their answer to being caught in the act is usually murder.

If a skelm uses this ability and an affected creature has no creatures adjacent to it, the creature is instead stunned for 1 round. This is a mind-influencing, compulsion, sonic effect, and the save DC is Charisma based.  Skelm Traits (Ex) A skelm gains a +4 racial bonus on Intimidate checks and a -2 penalty on saving throws against emotion effects.

CMD-03-GUNDAM EGRET

Following the end of the first Neo Zeon War, a collection of colonies from Side 5 resolved to enter a joint defense deal where they would share among them a defensive Mobile Suit force, a deal pushed through out of fear and frustration of the Federation's monopoly on Mobile Suit weaponry and the looming threat of Zeon remnant violence. The Gundam Egret, a close combat prototype MS built by Azfal Heavy Limited, would be the first machine produced under this agreement, and the Mobile Suits developed from it would become the bulk of this defense force. While several Egrets were built, the most notable unit of the bunch was one piloted by Safaa Naaji, it's original test pilot and frontline fighter in the Side 5/Olympian Conflict.

Cystbearer (Monster)

(So I ended up statting up a LOT of Phyrexian monsters back before their arc reached its climax. I'll be posting them under #phyrexia project, with the hope that once I'm done you'll have a robust monster list for a Phyrexian invasion campaign.

My phyrexia is mostly a blend of old Phyrexia and Phyrexia as depicted in Scars of Mirrodin block, as that's how I was first introduced to them. We'll be seeing a lot more of them as this blog continues. I haven't statted up the Praetors yet, but I'm imagining them as CR21-25 range monsters who grant divine spells and have Mythic ranks.

Cystbearers are, to me, an iconic creature of Scars of Mirrodin, being decently costed common infect creatures with no other ability. They also look nasty as hell, in a good way.)

CR4 NE Large Aberration

Cystbearers are early vanguards of Phyrexian invasion, virulent and resilient beings grown in massive Phyrexian breeding pools. They are remarkably fast to grow, with a new cystbear going from single celled germ to fully developed Phyrexian beast in the course of about a week in the noxious pools. They are then released into the world, typically with orders to kill and infect indiscriminately- orders they perform with gusto.

Cystbearers have barely enough intelligence for sadism and an understanding of the harm they're causing. For all intents and purposes, a cystbearer acts more like an unusually aggressive animal, rather than an intelligent being who can formulate plans in combat or be negotiated with.

A large-mouthed beast the size of a bear shambles forward, its back covered in tubular cysts leaking green fluid.

So let's get into the nitty-gritty technical details behind my latest project, the National Blue Trail round-trip search application available here:

This project has been fun with me learning a lot about plenty of technologies, including QGis, PostGIS, pgRouting, GTFS files, OpenLayers, OpenTripPlanner and Vita.

So let's start!

In most of my previous GIS projects I have always used custom made tools written in ruby or Javascript and never really tried any of the "proper" GIS tools, so it was a good opportunity for me to learn a bit of QGIS. I hoped I could do most of the work there, but soon realized it's not fully up to the job, so I had to extend the bits to other tools at the end. For most purposes I used QGis to import data from various sources, and export the results to PostGIS, then do the calculations in PostGIS, re-import the results from there and save them into GeoJSON. For this workflow QGIS was pretty okay to use. I also managed to use it for some minor editing as well.

I did really hope I could avoid PostGIS, and do all of the calculation inside QGIS, but its routing engine is both slow, and simply not designed for multiple uses. For example after importing the map of Hungary and trying to find a single route between two points it took around 10-15 minutes just to build the routing map, then a couple seconds to calculate the actual route. There is no way to save the routing map (at least I didn't find any that did not involve coding in Python), so if you want to calculate the routes again you had to wait the 10-15 minute of tree building once more. Since I had to calculate around 20.000 of routes at least, I quickly realized this will simply never work out.

I did find the QNEAT3 plugin which did allow one to do a N-M search of routes between two set of points, but it was both too slow and very disk space intense. It also calculated many more routes than needed, as you couldn't add a filter. In the end it took 23 hours for it to calculate the routes AND it created a temporary file of more than 300Gb in the process. After realizing I made a mistake in the input files I quickly realized I won't wait this time again and started looking at PostGIS + pgRouting instead.

Before we move over to them two very important lessons I learned in QGIS:

There is no auto-save. If you forget to save and then 2 hours later QGIS crashes for no reason then you have to restart your work

Any layer that is in editing mode is not getting saved when you press the save button. So even if you don't forget to save by pressing CTRL/CMD+S every 5 seconds like every sane person who used Adobe products ever in their lifetimes does, you will still lose your work two hours later when QGIS finally crashes if you did not exit the editing mode for all of the layers

So let's move on to PostGIS.

It's been a while since I last used PostGIS - it was around 11 years ago for a web based object tracking project - but it was fairly easy to get it going. Importing data from QGIS (more specifically pushing data from QGIS to PostGIS) was pretty convenient, so I could fill up the tables with the relevant points and lines quite easily. The only hard part was getting pgRouting working, mostly because there aren't any good tutorials on how to import OpenStreetMap data into it. I did find a blog post that used a freeware (not open source) tool to do this, and another project that seems dead (last update was 2 years ago) but at least it was open source, and actually worked well. You can find the scripts I used on the GitHub page's README.

Using pgRouting was okay - documentation is a bit hard to read as it's more of a specification, but I did find the relevant examples useful. It also supports both A* search (which is much quicker than plain Dijsktra on a 2D map) and searching between N*M points with a filter applied, so I hoped it will be quicker than QGIS, but I never expected how quick it was - it only took 5 seconds to calculate the same results it took QGIS 23 hours and 300GB of disk space! Next time I have a GIS project I'm fairly certain I will not shy away from using PostGIS for calculations.

There were a couple of hard parts though, most notably:

ST_Collect will nicely merge multiple lines into one single large line, but the direction of that line looked a bit random, so I had to add some extra code to fix it later.

ST_Split was similarly quite okay to use (although it took me a while to realize I needed to use ST_Snap with proper settings for it to work), but yet again the ordering of the segments were off a slight bit, but I was too lazy to fix it with code - I just updated the wrong values by hand.

The next project I had never used in the past was OpenTripPlanner. I did have a public transport project a couple years ago but back then tools like this and the required public databases were very hard to come by, so I opted into using Google's APIs (with a hard limit to make sure this will never be more expensive than the free tier Google gives you each month), but I have again been blown away how good tooling has become since then. GTFS files are readily available for a lot of sources (although not all - MAV, the Hungarian Railways has it for example behind a registration paywall, and although English bus companies are required to publish this by law - and do it nicely, Scottish ones don't always do it, and even if they do finding them is not always easy. Looks to be something I should push within my party of choice as my foray into politics)

There are a couple of caveats with OpenTripPlanner, the main one being it does require a lot of RAM. Getting the Hungarian map, and the timetables from both Volánbusz (the state operated coach company) and BKK (the public transport company of Budapest) required around 13GB of RAM - and by default docker was only given 8, so it did crash at first with me not realizing why.

The interface of OpenTripPlanner is also a bit too simple, and it was fairly hard for me to stop it from giving me trips that only involve walking - I deliberately wanted it to only search between bus stops involving actual bus travel as the walking part I had already done using PostGIS. I did however check if I could have used OpenTripPlanner for that part as well, and while it did work somewhat it didn't really give optimal results for my use case, so I was relieved the time I spend in QGIS - PostGIS was not in vain.

The API of OpenTripPlanner was pretty neat though, it did mimic Google's route searching API as much as possible which I used in the past so parsing the results was quite easy.

Once we had all of the data ready, the final bit was converting it to something I can use in JavaScript. For this I used my trusted scripting language I use for such occasion for almost 20 years now: ruby. The only interesting part here was the use of Encoded Polylines (which is Google's standard of sending LineString information over inside JSON files), but yet again I did find enough tools to handle this pretty obscure format.

Final part was the display. While I usually used Leaflet in the past I really wanted to try OpenLayers, I had another project I had not yet finished where Leaflet was simply too slow for the data, and I had a very quick look at OpenLayers and saw it could display it with an acceptable performance, so I believed it might be a good opportunity for me to learn it. It was pretty okay, although I do believe transparent layers seem to be pretty slow under it without WebGL rendering, and I could not get WebGL working as it is still only available as a preview with no documentation (and the interface has changed completely in the last 2 months since I last looked at it). In any case OpenLayers was still a good choice - it had built in support for Encoded Polylines, GPX Export, Feature selection by hovering, and a nice styling API. It also required me to use Vita for building the application, which was a nice addition to my pretty lacking knowledge of JavaScript frameworks.

All in all this was a fun project, I definitely learned a lot I can use in the future. Seeing how well OpenTripPlanner is, and not just for public transport but also walking and cycling, did give me a couple new ideas I could not envision in the past because I could only do it with Google's Routing API which would have been prohibitively expensive. Now I just need to start lobbying for the Bus Services Act 2017 or something similar to be implemented in Scotland as well

First, I use a VPN to get a French IP (or Belgian--I'm not sure which they accept, I just know these two work) so I can access the network's streaming site, TF1+. You should be able to sign up for a free account without issue. This is the page for the season 4 eps:

Apparently there are always two eps in advance available for the premium subscribers but I'm not caught up plus I think it'd be a little harder to sign up for an actual paid account so I probably won't be able to do that.

So normally I would use youtube-dl/yt-dlp to download the eps but that won't work here, or at least not without some extra steps, because these are DRMed. This is where it gets a little tricky and the whole process isn't super well documented both because it changes a lot and it makes more sense to teach people to learn how to do it than how to do it and also because, well, the more these methods are spread, the more networks change things up and make things harder.

The whole forum is quite useful and I've only had to post for help a couple of times, mostly I just search my issue and read through.

That provided command in the second post, that's something to be used in your command line, on Windows in Start you can open that by typing in cmd or PowerShell or just google what you'll need for your computer.

These are the things you'll need to get to run the command:

N_m3u8DL-RE is a tool you can google and download, and also ffmpeg and mp4decrypt. You'll want them in the same folder for convenience. (I think you might need to install python too? If it says you do, then go ahead, lol.)

The way to get the key, this is the most gatekept part, probably. The various streamers out there use different methods of encryption and increasing security levels, and if you read up on it, you'll see stuff about kid and pssh and cdm and L3, it can be overwhelming, but in this case, the things you need are relatively easily accessible.

I'll tell you how to get the pssh and the license URL and you'll be able to use those to get the key. There are several tools you can use them on, one is public and easy, one is private but still easy-ish, and one is pretty complex and not a route I've gone down myself yet (it's the pinned thread in that particular forum). I don't want to link any of them myself, but I'll link to a thread that mentions the easy public one. It does go down at times which is why the hardcore people recommend that last method.

First, before you click on an ep, open up your browser's Developer Tools, usually Ctrl+Shift+i will do the trick. Go over to your Network tab, this shows all the requests your browser makes when you go to a site.

Then click on the episode in the actual browser. You'll see a flood of requests in the Network tab, filter on mpd.

Select the mpd result and the details for it show on the side, click on Preview. Scroll down until you see <!-- Widevine -->. A couple of lines below it, you'll see something like <cenc:pssh>AAA[a bunch of characters]</cenc:pssh>

Grab that whoooole part that starts with AAA, that's the pssh. Go to the Headers detail tab while you're there and grab the Request URL, this is the mpd link we're going to use later.

Now to get the license. Usually you can filter in your Devtools Network tab on license or, in this case, widevine. Since we're already on the Headers detail tab, grab this Request URL now, it should start with https://widevine-proxy-m.prod.p.tf1.fr/proxy?

Now go back to that easy public tool linked in that thread I linked, lol, and just fill in the PSSH and the License. Hit Send and you get a list of three keys at the bottom. I've always gone for the one in the middle and not bothered with all three, but you can try them all.

So at this point, you should be able to fully create and use the command in the first forum link above. If you read the documentation for N_m3u8DL-RE, there are various flags you can use, --save-name "Outputname" will let you name the output what you want, -sv best defaults to the best video quality, -sa best is best audio quality, and so on.

The way to get the subtitle is to turn on subtitles on the video player on the site and to go back to the DevTools box and filter on textstream. Grab the first request, the one that ends with =1000.dash and paste it into a new browser address, and change the .dash to .vtt. That's the subtitle. :) You can use the free tool Subtitle Edit to both convert it to srt, which will let most video players play it with your video, and there's also an Auto-translate option that lets you translate to English. It offers several ways but as I don't have a Google API, I just use the normal "slow" method, it's not that bad.

A second way to get the subtitle is to use the same command as when you're downloading the ep but remove the -M format=mp4 at the end, and instead add -ss 'id="textstream_fra=1000":for=all'

This was all figured out through a LOT of trial and error on my part so please do try your own best if you hit some issues, that's the best way to learn. Also, I just don't want to be the helpdesk on this, lol.

How To Download Your AO3 History

So, if you're in an insane mood (like me) and you're frustrated you can't sort or search your AO3 history, I have found a "solution"(?) posted by a couple of helpful folks on Reddit that I want to share.

The original (comment) post was by nevereverevee and then was expanded on by mrcprlvnn in this post.

Essentially, it uses the help of a free Google Chrome extension to scrape the data into a CSV (excel type) file. The expanded post includes a lot more stuff that I (a noncomputer person) do not understand, but I will include the important 'how to' steps under the cut in case those posts ever disappear.

Install the Google Chrome extension Webscraper.io. It's a very simple to use scraping tool and will suit us well for this task.

Press Ctrl+Shift+I (on PC) or Cmd+Opt+I (on Mac) on your keyboard to open developer tools and click on the tab "Web Scraper"

Click the "Create New Sitemap" dropdown and select "Import Sitemap". In the box that says "Sitemap JSON" paste the following text, replacing the bolded (and pink) elements with the correct information for you:

Make sure that you are logged into your AO3 account before proceeding.

Click "Import Sitemap" then click the dropdown menu titled "Sitemap ao3_expanded1" and select "Scrape".

The extension is going to open another window, it should pop up in your toolbar as a little spiderweb. The scrape will take anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours, depending on how long your history is. Just let it run. When it finishes, the extension should make a little pop-up to let you know.

Back in the Webscraping menu, click the dropdown menu "Sitemap ao3_expanded1" and select "Export data" and then ".CSV". When that data downloads, open it in your spreadsheet software of choice.

What you do after that? I don't know. Honestly, I don't think I'll really be able to answer any of your questions on this but I can try? So feel free to ask??? Idk. Good luck lol.

installation and set-up

download obsidian

visit the obsidian website and download the version that's compatible with your operating system. obsidian is available as an app on your phone and as a app on your computer.

install obsidian

once the download is complete, follow the download instructions to install it properly on your device.

create a vault

when first opening obsidian, you'll be asked to create a new vault. a vault is the main folder where all your notes will be stored. choose the location you'd like it to be stored in on your computer and give it a name.

explore the app

take a few minutes to get familiar with the interface and all the features in the app. the sidebar on the left has options to create new notes, folders etc. the central panel is where you can view, edit your notes.

creating and editing notes

create a new note

to create a new note, click the + icon on the sidebar or use the keyboard shortcut (CTRL/CMD + N). give the note a name and start typing your information in the editor panel.

markdown formatting

obsidian uses markdown for format notes. you can format your notes using markdown syntax, such as adding headers, lists, bolding or italizing text, links and more. obsidian has a markdown cheatsheet to help you.

linking notes

one of obsidian's most useful features is the ability to link notes together. to create a link to another note, simply enclose the note title in double square brackets (ex: [[note title]]). obsidian will automatically create a link to that note and you can click on it to navigate to that linked note.

backlinks

obsidian has a feature called backlinks which shows you all the notes linked to the current note you're viewing. this makes it easy to discover connections between different notes and explore related topics.

organizing & managing notes

tags & metadata

you can add tags and metadata to your notes to help organize and categorize them. tags are keywords that you can add to your notes to make them easier to find and filter. metadata includes attributes like creation data, modification date and word count and can be achieved by using the dataview plugin. i have a tutorial on this in this post.

folders & hierarchies

in addition to tags, you can use folders and subfolders to organize your notes and keep them organized by topic or projects.

search & filter

obsidian has a powerful search and filter function that allows you to quickly find specific notes or information within your vault. you can search for keywords or filter note by tags, metadata or any other criteria you want. you can also used advanced search operators to narrow down your results.

Pathfinder 1E Conversion: Kangarai

Here you go, everyone! This is my first official attempt at creating a creature for the 1st edition of Pathfinder, a game I'm still pretty obsessed with. It's been a long time ever since I wanted to start writing conversions, but for some reason I never really got around to it.

You can thank the excellent blogs The Creature Chronicle and Creature Codex for setting a great example and giving me the inspiration to start this project. Of course, since I'm rather inexperienced with these, I would like to ask readers to tell me what they think, where I can do better, what errors I might have committed, and so on. A bit of constructive criticism, so that I can always do better. ^^

And we start off with a simple creature. This one comes from the Hacklopedia of Beasts Volume IV, for the Hackmaster roleplaying game. The kangarai scratches a lot of my itches when it comes to depicting an original humanoid race, so I decided it would have been my first attempt at a conversion.

SPECIAL ABILITIES Hop Attack (Ex): As part of a charge, a kangarai can leap over an opponent and strike from above. In addition to the normal benefits and hazards of a charge, a kangarai performing an hop attack gets a +2 bonus on weapon damage rolls for a successful melee attack. Naturally Athletic (Ex): A kangarai has a +4 racial bonus to Acrobatics checks. This bonus increases to +8 for Acrobatics checks involving jumping. Acrobatics is always considered a class skill for a kangarai.

Kangarai are a race of nomadic kangaroo-like humanoids. They wander great expanses of savannah and open plains, often in the presence of a herd of kangaroos. Strictly herbivores, kangarais gain most of their food by gathering and grazing. They live in small wandering tribes, composed of varying percentages of male and females.

Like the kangaroos they resemble, kangarais are marsupials - females give live birth to a joey that exits the mother's uterus in a still incomplete state and whose development continues in the mother's pouch, from which they emerge as fully formed young. Female kangarai exhibit a capacity for embryonic diapause, the capacity of halting an embryo's development in times of drought and areas with poor food sources.

Kangarai tend to be distrusting of other humanoid races, and give a wide berth to permanent settlements as a result. The exception to this tend to be halflings, and kangarais often have amicable, or at least cordial, relationships with nomadic halfling tribes in their same territory. Evil gnoll tribes prize kangarais as both slaves and food, so relationships between the two races are almost invariably hostile. Kangarais have a natural life expectancy of about 50 years, but the rigors of their lifestyle claim most of them before they reach their 30th birthday.

Kangarais that progress in class levels usually do so as rangers or rogues, enhancing their natural scouting and stealth abilities. Fighters, barbarians and slayers are rather common as well. Kangarais tend not to gravitate towards specific deities, instead worshipping the abstract forces of nature, and clerics are therefore uncommon amongst their kind compared to druids or shamans.

One off the list!

As I suggested I might, I decided to start with some of the fics whose goal is being outlined instead of finished, to ease my brain into this.

I have one that I've mentioned on here several times in the past - a zimbits fic that is in no way based on the musical Waitress (no infidelity or anything) but is heavily inspired by the song Bad Idea. It's maybe half done, and will probably be about 50k all told. My progress on it has slowed to a halt over the past couple of years mostly, I think, because other than a couple of events later in the fic I only had a vague sense of what I needed to do - mostly "uhhhh show their relationship developing" type stuff.

I've got a more detailed outline banged out now, even to the point of picking Bad Idea lyrics for the rest of the chapter titles (as I'd already done for the existing chapters). I even discovered that I had another chapter done, after rearranging some random later scenes I'd written to where they go in the chapters!

So even though part of my brain is like "well hey we're on a roll, lets work on this one!" I'm going to set it aside now and go back to it after the cleanout, feeling a little more confident that I might actually be able to finish it in a reasonable time frame.

I used Scrivener's outline mode to do this, which I'd never really used before. I may or may not use it for any of the other outlines, but in this case it made more sense than a narrative type outline because I already had some random scenes written so it was helpful to be able to actually take those and slot them into place. Plus I feel like I wound up with a better idea of how many scenes each chapter needs this way.

I also discovered a command that I cannot BELIEVE I have been living without - cmd-option-K, Split at selection! A bunch of the random scenes were all one document (because they were all scenes of them with Shitty & Lardo), so I needed to give them each their own document I could move around. All this time I've been copy-pasting stuff into new docs, this was so much easier holy crap.

After all, in a game where your character dies to a single bullet, combat isn't exactly the developer's goal. So the good stuff is in the flavor text, which I did tweak just a little. In the games, it's implied that scrabs are pure carnivores, but both their desert habitat and ability to be farmed for food suggests something a little broader. So I went omnivore.]

Scrab CR 7 N Magical Beast This creature has four crab-like legs, each tipped with a large claw, above which grows an armless, humanoid torso. Its head is eyeless, with a large upward scooping beak, sword edged along the lower jaw.

Scrabs are belligerent omnivores native to the desert mesas and canyons of an alien world. They are extremely territorial, repelling all other scrabs from their territory except for pack members unless it is the mating season. Territorial marking is done with booming calls that carry for miles through the still desert air, but if that fails, scrabs do not hesitate to fight others of their own species to the death. Due to the harsh nature of their habitats, scrab territories are large. Most scrabs forage independently by day, and then return to a communal nest during the night to feed the young, who are communally raised on regurgitated food provided by all pack members.

The bulk of a scrab’s diet consists of roots and gourds, dug up using their shovel-like bills. They prefer meat when they can get it, though, either carrion or killed on the hoof. Scrabs find the meat of their own kind unpalatable—the one thing a scrab will refuse to eat is another scrab. This is unusual, as many species find scrabs to be delicious, albeit difficult game. Due to their homebody nature and garbage disposal physiologies, scrabs can even be farmed, although this runs the risk of the farmer becoming the next meal if the scrabs are neglected or underfed. Due to their durability and fierce nature, scrabs are also sacred animals in some cultures. The cultures that farm scrabs and those that venerate them are usually deeply at odds with each other.

And ahhh thank you so much 🥺❤️ that means a lot to me. I set out to write SDP with a canonical component (both book and show) and because I wanted to develop the relationship between the two into an exploration of obsession, hate, and the insidious nature of longing. When I ventured into canon-divergent territory, I was slightly worried on how the characterization would turn out. It was an experimental fic with no intention of moving past the first chapter, as it was my first dip into L*CMD. I'm happy I finished it and I'm very glad it had an impact.

It's a bit rough, but I have many scenes written out for it. The toughest challenge for me will be to balance Aemond's and Lucerys's characterization in a way that is authentic to me, while also illustrating the logical conclusion of their character arcs. We left off in SDP with Luke, captured and determined. Aemond has awakened his thirst, so how will this play out in part 2?

Part 2 will be very action-based compared to SDP's slow build. It features a few OCs (that we have already met), but the heavy focus will be on Aemond/Luke interactions. Will obsession consume? Will restraint die?

The sequel will come out probably after I finish my L*cmd gothic AU and my stalking AU (unreleased). :] I'm also working on my other fandom too, so it may take some time, but I do want to fully write it for weekly release. So realistically, around March 2024 is an estimate.

THE U.S.S. HOPE, AN OLYMPIC CLASS VESSEL.   IT’S MISSION:   SCIENCE AND EXPLORATION, TO GO WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE   (   stardate:    2371   )

literally, it’s going to go to the delta quadrant !     

while on its first mission, carrying a sizable amount of civilians, the u.s.s. hope picks up a strange signal, a transmission with a signal never before recorded by the federation.    they are ordered to take a detour and investigate, as it a possible first contact mission and they are the closest ship to the location.    the strange phenomena, a wormhole, but they don’t know that yet, is deteriorating when they finally arrive.    

it begins to collapse, and just before it disappears, it expands.   the ship, and a shuttle nearby, are both swallowed up by a white light, transporting them to the delta quadrant.    their bad luck is only just starting, however.    the ship crashes into an asteroid belt when it arrives and the collision hits directly the bridge room, instantly killing most of the senior staff.    

almost a third of its 600 crew complement dies on the first day from damages to the ship.   the command structure is a commander and two lieutenant commanders.   they are facing the toughest challenge in their history, a journey back which will take at least seventy years and their ship is hanging on by a thread.

anyways! hello!   let me talk about the structure of this universe:   i don’t wanna call this a group verse, i’d state it is more of a shared universe.   no one is forced to be active, no one is forced to write with anyone, it’s about giving people another setting to write in, and to possibly create new connections.

as stated in the description, most of the characters in this universe are lower-ranking officers.  this doesn’t mean the entire senior staff has passed away, i think it would be very interesting for there to be someone who was from the senior staff before and survived, but mostly, these are people who were in other areas and are now rebuilding the ship.

besides starfleet officers, we will also have:   (1) the crew of the shuttle that was transported with them;   (2)   the civilians who were on board for the mission;   (3)   three characters from the delta quadrant;  (4) 2 hologram or holosuite characters.
