Rose and Rey sit together in a barn on a hay bale, tucked away a bit from the rest of the farm, their legs tangled together as Rose feeds Rey bites of apple cider donut.

Rose is wearing a flannel shirt in harvest colors—black, burnt orange, beige—along with a pair of black jeans with ratty hems and a giant hole torn in one knee and calf-high lace-up black boots. Her hair is down.

Rey is wearing blue jean shorts despite the chill, a cream peasant shirt, and a long, gray wool sleeveless sweater that falls past her knees. It’s unbuttoned so the corset-like ties on the front of the shirt are accessible. She’s also wearing red Converse.

Rose likes that Rey’s legs are bare. She has one hand high on Rey’s thigh while she breaks off pieces of donut with her other hand to feed her. She brings each crumbly, cider-soaked, sugar-crusted morsel to Rey’s mouth and pushes it gently past her lips.

Rey likes picking at the strings around the big hole in Rose’s jeans. She’s doing that with one hand; the other hand is at Rose’s neck, fingers buried in her hair. When Rose feeds her a bite of donut, Rey lets her tongue brush Rose’s fingertips.

After a few bites, Rose leans in and kisses Rey, sucking and licking gently at her lips. She pulls back before Rey can deepen the kiss, licks her own lips, swallows. “You had a little sugar on you,” Rose explains, grinning. She brings another piece of donut to Rey’s mouth.

Rey is not wearing a bra, and the sweater has fallen open enough that Rose can see her hard nipples through the light shirt beneath it. Goosebumps have flared up along Rey’s legs too. Rose rubs Rey’s thigh, ostensibly to warm it, but really just to enjoy the feel of Rey’s skin.

Rose can’t get away with not wearing a bra, but when Rey disentangles her fingers from Rose’s hair to work a few of her shirt buttons open, she finds a very nice low-cut black lace push-up bra beneath the flannel. Rose lets her unbutton the shirt halfway before stopping her.

Rey grins and pushes her face into Rose’s cleavage. Rose allows that too, barely moving the box of donuts out of her lap in time to avoid the box being knocked over by Rey’s hand as it slides up from Rose’s knee to her waist. She sighs as Rey drops open-mouthed kisses along her skin.

They can’t do much, not here on a tourist-attraction farm where someone might walk in on them at any moment. But they’ve had a long, fun day together, picking out a pumpkin, drinking pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider, vanquishing a corn maze, going on a hayride.

Rey licks a long stripe from between Rose’s breasts up to her neck, then sucks a little there before drawing back. “Want to go home?” she asks, voice husky.

Rose drags her hand up Rey’s thigh, plants it firmly between her legs, and squeezes. “Yeah,” she says. “Let’s do that.”

And so they do. They gather up their pumpkin, and they buy a peck of apples, and a gallon of cider, and another box of donuts, and then they get into Rey’s beat-up pickup truck and drive to their little apartment, and once they’ve unloaded everything they fall into bed.

The window is cracked, letting in a chilly evening breeze and the sound of leaves rustling in the trees. Beneath the quilt they made together last year, Rose and Rey warm each other up with hands and mouths.

It’s the perfect end to the perfect fall day.

“So...you never found out? Who your parents were?”

Rey gives Rose a small smile. “No. Sometimes I wish I had, but Maz was right. I found belonging without them.” She squeezes Rose’s shoulder.

“I guess that means...you never found out if you have a last name, either?”

Rey isn’t sure what Rose is getting at. She shrugs. “I don’t even know if Rey is my name. There was a helmet I scavenged, it used to belong to a Rebel Alliance pilot named Dosmit Ræh, and her name was on it...I might have named myself after her.”

Rose looks stymied, as if the conversation isn’t going the way she wanted. “Are you...okay with that?”

“Sure,” Rey says easily. She’s had a lot of time to think about it since the defeat of the First Order.

“Because I was wondering.” Rose twists her hands together. “If you.”

Rey raises an eyebrow, waits. Rose takes a long breath. “Would you maybe want a last name?”

She’s the only one without one, now that Finn and Poe are married. It makes her special in a way she’s not interested in being. “I mean, yeah. I just haven’t thought one up yet.”

“How about...how about Tico?”

Rey freezes. Slowly, she slides her hand from Rose’s shoulder. Of course, Rose has no idea how Rey feels. Why would she? Rey hasn’t said anything. Rose lost her sister; she’s not looking for love. She’s still grieving. It would be inappropriate.

“It was just a thought, you don’t have to,” Rose stammers.

Rey must have an odd look on her face. She tries to smile. “No, it’s okay,” she says. “It’s really nice of you to offer. I do feel really close to you.” She looks away at those words, afraid her eyes will reveal her. “I’ve never had a sister before,” she adds, hoping that’s enough of an explanation for her hesitance.

“Oh,” Rose says. Then, “Oh,” she says again. Rey glances back to her; her face is red. “Rey. I...don’t want you to be my sister.”

Rey blinks. Surely she doesn’t mean—

“I mean,” Rose says, firm even though her voice shakes a little, “I want you to be my wife.”

“Oh,” Rey says. Her heart is suddenly beating faster than a starfighter engine. “Oh.” And then she says, “Okay.”

Rose sucks in a breath. “Okay?” she asks.

“Okay,” Rey says.

She’s not sure when it happened, but suddenly they’re kissing, her hands on Rose’s waist and Rose’s hands in her hair. It’s the absolute best feeling Rey has had in her entire life.

“I don’t need your name,” she whispers later, curled up tightly with Rose in her bunk, Rose’s pulse pounding beneath her fingertips. “I just need you.”

Rose kisses her again. “You can have my name anyway,” she murmurs.

Rey can’t stop smiling. “Okay,” she says.
