Excerpt from ch 4

“Leave us,” Thranduil ordered his soldiers, in elvish. His deep voice shook my bones, I almost moaned at it, but managed to stay quiet, still, unattached, at least on the outside.

He stared at me and I stared at him. I could almost feel how dilated my pupils were, as if my eyes were more pupils than irises. The tension between us was unbearable, so thick you wouldn’t be able to cut it with a knife, no you’d need an axe or a saw. I felt sweat trickle down my body, making my shirt stick to my body, my breasts swallowing the fabric of it. For some reason my teeth itched, my skin felt too tight and my temperature was running way too hot. Was I sick? I needed… something. It was hard to stand still, but I didn’t want to let on that being in the King’s presence bothered me.

Thranduil rose to his feet when all the soldiers had gone, and even though I hadn’t seen them, as my eyes had been interlocked with Thranduil’s, I had heard the steps as they left and I had noted that there had been a lot more soldiers than I had accounted for when I first walked in.

When he began descending the steps, I held my breath. I knew he was tall, I knew it, but when he reached the level I was at, I still marvelled at just how tall. I’d felt like a giant next to the dwarves the last couple of days, but now? Now I was the one being dwarfed. Thranduil was incredibly tall, even for an elf, and while his physique was on the slim side, there was no doubt in my mind that he could win any brawl through pure power. I gathered he could lift me up and throw me off this platform without breaking a sweat if he so wished. The mere thought sent shivers down my spine. 

There was something completely wrong with me.

Since I was holding my breath, I couldn’t smell him, but I knew his scent would have amplified at our proximity. He approached me slowly, like a lion stalking a gazelle that had nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, forced to face its inevitable fate. If I hadn’t been clenching my teeth together so forcefully, I might have actually drooled, but If he was in any way, shape or form affected by me, his face did not reveal it. I could not scent it either.

He stopped mere inches away from me, making me crane my neck to avoid breaking eye-contact. To lift my chin up this high left my neck completely exposed, but for some reason this felt right. There was a slight curve to his lips, as if he was enjoying the sight of me, making me fear he could tell precisely how much I was struggling?

“Who are you?” he asked me in elvish. 

I raised my brows, pretending not to understand. In fact, I was still holding my breath, still delaying what I knew to be inevitable, though I knew I would require air in the nearest future.

He raised a brow at me, before moving again, this time stopping right behind me. I continued to stay perfectly still, even when he leaned closer, leaned so close his lips were almost touching my ear. Thranduil inhaled the smell of me, then he said softly, “a pity. Dirty talking sounds better in Elvish. ”

I couldn’t help it. I was so taken aback by his statement that I gasped. Was he insinuating…? Oh my gods. He was!  When I drew in my first breath of a while, his scent came with it and almost knocked me the fuck out. Thranduil smelled divine. I totally got what Edward had been talking about in Twilight when he’d said Bella was like his own personal brand of heroin. If I could bottle up the smell of Thranduil, I’d sniff it until I died. I’d never get anything done. 

Holding my breath had somewhat dulled the intense need within me, but it all came rushing back now, hitting me like a battering ram. My knees were weak at the sensation of his scent. If I could spend the rest of my day licking it off his skin, I would die a happy woman.

“Ah. So I thought.” He chuckled, the sound of which reverberated through my skin, feeding me dirty dirty thoughts of where else would be nice to feel the thrum of his humming laughter. Except... No, not good, remember what you came for, I thought to myself. Which was… Which was fucking Thranduil. That was why I had come. I couldn’t cower now. How many times had I envisioned this situation? How many times had I pleasured myself to the mere thought of it? How many fucking fan fictions had I devoured about this very man? This... this King?

Putting on a brave, hopefully unbothered-looking, face, I turned around to confront him. All of my instincts were screaming at me to push back at him, to challenge him and I could see as I turned around that he wasn’t as unaffected as he’d made it seem. His chest was rising and falling fast, and in his eyes I could see that he was hungry, ravenous even. His strikingly ice-coloured eyes undressed me as they moved down my body, lingering by my lips before they returned to my eyes again.

I smirked at him. And here I’d thought all the power was in his hands. Choosing a bold approach, I took a step closer, initiating what we both wanted. Since he didn't move, our bodies were now touching. The feel of his against mine was torturous only because I wanted our clothes removed, wanted to feel his skin on mine. Preferably I would also lick every inch of his skin, but that could wait for now. I lifted my hand next, grabbing a handful of his silver shirt before I pulled him down towards me. 

Thranduil indulged me, leaning down while taking hold of my chin, angling my head up. We were both breathing heavily, moving slowly as if not to stop the other, both desperate for more. 

My skin was hot, feverish, when I leaned in for the kiss, watched as he did the same, but then at the very last moment pulled back before our lips met. My great bold approach. Hah! That showed him! He’d made me feel needy, so it was only fair I returned the favour. 

Thranduil growled low in his throat, actually growled! His eyes looked furious. I only managed a short smirk before his hand moved from my chin to the back of my head, grabbing my curly hair harshly before he captured my lips in a kiss. 

His lips were impossibly soft, and the taste of him almost indescribable. Imagine not having had water for a month and then being given a nice cold glass of water. I could lick his lips and never tire. He felt so good I moaned into his mouth. The power he extruded through grabbing me like that was also something that was making me very, very wet.

I felt him smile against my lips as his other hand went to my waist, crushing my body against his as he devoured me through kisses. My nipples rubbed against my shirt as he held me tightly to himself. 

Gripped onto his shirt until my knuckles turned white with the effort, as if my life depended on it, I moved my other hand into his hair. It felt like the finest silk and I had expected nothing else. Pulling his hair roughly, I bit his lower lip in a not so gentle manner.

Thranduil gasped and pulled back, not letting go of my hair or waist and so I didn’t let go of him either. Our eyes met, but then I saw that his lip was bleeding. Shit, had I gone too far? 

He looked at me with such utter bewilderment that I was highly expecting him to just kill me next, but he didn’t. We were both out of breath now, my body burning with need. I had to have him. My body physically ached as if he was the missing puzzle piece and I would die if he didn’t complete me. It felt like life or death at this point. “Are you going to fuck me or what?” I asked him in elvish. 

His eyes darkened, his grip on my hair tightening. I winced, but I loved it. I loved being treated roughly. I loved him being in charge. It turned me on so much.Thranduil’s lips curled upwards, but it wasn’t a nice smile. This smile was full of promise. A promise of destruction and I was looking forward to every second of it. As if I weighed nothing he lifted me up, with one hand, and I instantly wrapped my legs around him, feeling the evidence of his need against my body. “Your mouth is going to get you killed one day,” he began. I bit my lip and his gaze shot down, drawn like a moth to a flame. “But today is not that day.” 

Then he carried me away. I leaned in and started kissing his neck as he carried me past the big throne, but not the way I’d come in. There was a bridge of sorts behind the throne, leading to a big set of doors. I was half paying attention just in case, whilst kissing, sucking and licking at his neck. The origin of much of his scent. I couldn’t get enough of him. My teeth were itching and aching and so I did bite him a little too, but it didn’t do anything for the pressure that was throbbing in my gums. I rubbed my nipples against his chest and ground my hips against his stomach while I tried to undress him. I was desperate for him. I’d never felt a need so strong in my entire life. 

There was something seriously wrong with me.

I’m re-reading Midnight Sun right now, and I’m at the part where Edward reveals that he read Siobhan’s mind and that’s what started him wanting to rebel and eat humans. 1) do you think Siobhan ever finds out that she inspired a rebellion in Edward? 2) how do you think she reacted/would react if she is told?

God I love asks like this.

1) Siobhan never finds out. There is no way in hell Edward would talk to anyone about his killing spree for funsies. He barely wanted to discuss it with Bella. We also have him killing people who smoke and do drugs because everyone who partakes in that are clearly degenerates. His words probably. Edward wanted to have Carlisle’s amazing moral standing and be able to have the blood he so desperately craved. He didn’t like the way people who smoked tasted so he said, next best(worst?) thing…pedophiles. He truly believes he’s doing a justice for humanity by doing this until he realizes one of his meals he almost unalived doesn’t want to go down that road. Personally if Edward had kept this up he might actually be redeemable in my mind. However, in midnight sun I believe he also says that it was foolish for him to be influenced by some vampires who were obviously lesser than carlisle (barf). He’s not giving up this information himself and I don’t think Carlisle would ever divulge this information either only because Edward would find out and to prevent his golden child (that should definitely be Rosalie) from running away again I imagine this isn’t brought up.

2) Say Bella somehow found out her involvement in his crime fighting escapades, maybe she’s the one to slip up and say something to Siobhan. I honestly think she might feel guilty for Carlisle because she knows that he’s positive she has a gift. She fears for a moment this could have strained their friendship. In the end though, Siobhan sees nothing wrong with eating humans. That’s the food they’re supposed to eat. You don’t hate a lion for needing to feed in gazelles (or stupid lambs lol) because that’s what they need to eat. Vampires need to drink blood. In the end it’s edwards choice so I would say after talking to Liam I think she wouldn’t think much of it especially as he never maintained that diet.

The future workforce in the age of microcapitalism and automation

We can’t think about the future of work and automation without first looking at the history and tendencies of capitalism and digitalization. 

The demise of conventional capitalism relies on our disposition to remain stagnant, ignorant, and unwavering to innovation and change. However, digitalization is changing all of this. 

Digitalization is increasing access and broadening the scope of production in society, ultimately causing the workforce at large to become increasingly out of date and irrelevant in its conventional form. 

On the effect side of this cause, the workforce is changing dramatically, causing our entire society to advance into a position where there are more opportunities for wealth, social equity, and environmental conservation. 

These changes are resulting in companies replacing workers with automation from the newest technologies, and workers are leaving the labor force in massive quantities because there are more alternatives for an individual to be productive and generate an income on their own. 

All of this is happening at rapid rates never seen before. 

In this article, I’ll explore the future of work and automation, focusing on the evolution of society from standard capitalism to the new age of microcapitalism as a key factor shaping the future of labor and industry. 

The microcapitalist manifesto

Microcapitalism is an economic theory based on productive property in as many private hands as possible. Favoring small business and small government, Microcapitalism provides a reasonable alternative to unrestricted capitalism and the injustice of socialism. 

The Microcapitalist Manifesto book by Paul Edward Nowak explores what went wrong with runaway capitalism and the overreaction of socialism, and identifies steps every citizen can take to encourage responsible, limited capitalism without big business and big government interference.

The corporations: Forced innovation 

Capitalism is self-perpetuating in that depending on the situation, it needs either minimal or zero deliberate intervention to evolve. The subconscious nature of capitalism forces expansion and innovation. 

Businesses and individual workers are a microcosm of the overall capitalistic system. Businesses are built on systems and processes that can run like pieces of an engine in a car, making up the larger entire engine, our economy, in the end generating an overall outcome. 

In order to produce better engines of economy, we must produce better and more efficient parts, parts meaning companies and workers. This is called forced innovation. 

Forced innovation comes from external pressures, rather than by a self-starting desire to improve or create. 

In general, companies won’t self-improve or innovate unless they’re forced to, and they typically won’t do it well if they do decide to voluntarily innovate in new areas, because in the past, innovation has been unconditionally expensive and difficult for companies, with more of them failing at innovation than succeeding. 

The reason for this derives from the very history and nature of capitalism. A pack of lions would be foolish to think that the supply of gazelles would remain endless without some different ways of thinking. The pack of lions would go hungry without otherwise venturing out into new territories or exploring new food sources, such as zebra. So, on the back of exploration and venturing out, the pack of lions survives and expands their dominance. 

Thankfully, the human race is able to venture out, explore, and come up with new inventions every so often, resulting in many reasons why we’ve increased life expectancies and an expanding presence across the universe. 

In the primeval era, people only did business with things they could see, feel, and touch. However, this approach isn’t necessarily moving society forward. Therefore, economies of the time were by nature stagnant and atrophic. So society found a way to invest in our intangible futures with something called credit, also known as venture capital. This realization became what we know today as capitalism. 

Capitalism requires innovation, and whether we innovate or not, it makes winners and losers out of all of us. Forced innovation requires a response. 

The COVID-19 pandemic is a great example of this forced innovation. Capitalism by its very nature isn’t natural human instinct, and this is why it’s so hard for companies to succeed and innovate. Hence, many don’t, and opt to not fix what isn’t broken. 

In contrast, if something can be better, then it’s broken already. With the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen a rapid rise in automation and digitalization due to the need for social distancing technologies. All of this has resulted in a significant growth of digitally and data-driven organizations from remote work. 

Particularly with manufacturers during the pandemic, we saw the fragile nature of our existing workforce and its vulnerability from manually run organizations. COVID-19 marked the “forever transition,” where companies have now adopted a new school of thought – automate as much of the human components of the workforce as possible. 

Now, with our digital economy and the need for automation due to the explosion of technologies like augmented reality, blockchain, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and semiconductors, we have permanent forced innovation, at least for the 21st century. 

In other words, as artificial intelligence continues to mature and while other technologies successfully integrate with artificial intelligence, companies will need to innovate quickly and preemptively for at least the next several decades. 

Now, because of this forced innovation, we’re seeing more and more that with automation, businesses can reach more customers in shorter periods of time with better products by using machines instead of humans. By removing humans from mundane, laborious, repetitive, and dangerous tasks, businesses can cut labor costs and put more resources towards innovation and competitive gain. 

As companies put more and more resources towards innovation, eventually we’ll see a progressive move to companies with fewer and fewer workers, and eventually many companies with no workers, but only administrative, contract, and owner staff. 

So, when the economy’s workers aren’t traditionally employed, then what happens? 

The workers: Dealing with automation and capitalism 

For the first time since its inception 500 years ago, conventional capitalism is on its deathbed, but capitalism itself isn’t dead. Why? Because workers see a way out of the repetitive and symbolic “hamster wheel”, thanks to digitalization. They also don’t really have a choice with so many organizations looking to automate their workforce. 

The concept behind capitalism is that it must feed on itself, and that’s how it gets bigger. Digitalization and automation have been happening since the 1940s when semiconductors emerged, and it only picked up speed in the 1990s with the emergence of the internet and mobile devices. 

Can it get infinitely big? The answer is no, not in its current approaches. Conventional capitalism is becoming a supernova about to implode upon itself because it’s reaching its critical mass. When supernovas explode, they release their debris far into space, and this massive debris makes new stars, planets, and sometimes, even life. 

This is why we’re becoming a microcapitalist society. In other words, we’re moving away from the haves and the have-nots and we’re creating new stars. So you can think of the current state of the labor force in the same way as an exploding supernova, creating new stars and new life into the economy; new products, new jobs, and more prosperity. 

How are we doing it? Well, companies are really leading this initiative as they become more and more innovative in order to stay competitive and deliver better, cheaper products. 

Over the decades, we’ve seen big movements towards more automation happen several times, such as in the 1980s when the auto industry laid off thousands of workers or the same thing that happened with the collapse of the steel industry in America during the 20th century. 

During the latter 20th century, the auto and steel industry suffered massive worker displacement from the emergence of computer-aided design (CAD) manufacturing capabilities, once again, eliminating repetitive tasks and making companies more competitive on a global level by providing better and safer consumer products. 

The result did eliminate jobs, but also created many more jobs such as computer programmers and technicians. 

During this workforce transformation, we’re in the midst of, we won’t see total displacement. We’re seeing and trending toward an increase in contract workers and a decrease in full-time workers. 

During COVID-19, when companies reduced their workforces, workers followed in agreement and just decided not to come back. So we have a declining workforce because of this, and also because of an aging population and declining birth rates. 

With a declining workforce, it’s important that corporations act with foresight and automate their workforce tasks where there’ll likely be worker shortages.

However, this doesn’t mean corporations are forever devoid of workers should they need them. There are still plenty of people wanting to work, just not as many in the traditional employment capacity. Corporations will need to rely on contractors and solopreneurs to bring on-demand innovation and expertise for specific business cases. 

At present and in the future, it won’t be uncommon to see one person with 3- 4 fractional corporate jobs at any given point in time. Workers will quickly gain new and diverse experiences as a result that further support automation and increased prosperity, in the end producing potential entrepreneurs who can build new products and companies that can make our world cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable. 

According to McKinsey, just 6 out of 10 occupations have only 30% of tasks that are automatable. So, looking past all the fear-mongering, the reality is a maturation of the market where there’s transitioning happening coupled with some temporary displacement, rather than a complete elimination in various areas of the labor force.

Fortify your position for the future 

As the evolution of microcapitalism continues to be an ever-emerging key factor shaping the future of labor and industry, the global production economy will need to respond in order to stay competitive. If corporations and workers both adopt traits of microcapitalism, they can likely survive in the new world. 

Corporations will need to source and procure strategies, processes, and malleable products that are all flexible to future changes. 

Secondly, corporations must database and build relationships with full-time employees, contractors, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs across a wide range of industries and geographies in order to have a holistic and complete innovation engine filled with machine automation and key personnel roles. 

Adopting this approach will empower and enable an arbitrage-like preemptive culture and response system to shifting market conditions. 

Not all of the workforce will be displaced, so relax! However, don’t sleep on the shifting market conditions or you’ll certainly be left behind. The emergence of automation is happening everywhere and in every industry across the globe, so no one is obsolete from the shifting market requirements. 

Only a small portion of the workforce will be totally displaced, but what seems to be happening is that workers need to retrain or potentially pick up entirely new trades. 

To be competitive, workers must pursue education in economics and artificial intelligence. People will need to choose technical domains to specialize in, e.g. augmented reality, blockchain, etc., but everyone will need to have a working knowledge of artificial intelligence as a generalist, no matter your technical domain. 

Workers should also look at industries falling behind as there’ll be plenty of opportunity for work here. They can work with organizations that are behind or at inflection points and help those corporations bring those industries up to speed. 

Workers will need to ensure their lives are flexible and highly mobile in order to ensure they can quickly shift gears if they’re needed in different geographic markets. 

In closing, this is an exciting time for corporations and workers in a world that has begun refortifying their positions for the future. The present and the future are full of possibilities for companies of all sizes, and people at all working-class levels of the economy. We’ve never seen evolution happening at this pace as a human race, and there will be more fortune happening at more accelerated paces than ever before. 

I advise not to look at automation and artificial intelligence as the enemy, or as a catalyst to depressed economic and personal states, but rather as a vehicle for equal opportunity and a thriving economy and environment.

Stede finished the tie, knotting it gently across Ed’s collarbone, before stepping back to admire his handiwork.

“There you go. Like I said, you wear it well.”

Ed’s fingers traced over the meticulous folds and lines of the silk. “Am I a fancyman too, now?” He asked.

“I think you might be.” Stede mused, his hand moving to rest on his chin; a place it didn’t stay for long as a woman joined them by the bar, sidling up to Stede���s side.

She was a small, petite thing; with blunt cut bangs, chocolate hair and a pointed but not unkind stare. Ed would have described her as a swan or a gazelle, yet there was a quiet intensity that didn’t suit either. Next to Stede’s ridiculous get up, her baby blue dress looked particularly understated; accessorised only by a simple brown belt cinched at the waist and-

And Stede’s hand. Stede’s hand on her hip.

Ed’s heart dropped in an instant; the electric, intoxicating feeling of Stede’s touch evaporating immediately as his mouth went dry and his head buzzed painfully and his body grew cold.

“You must be Edward,” She smiled politely, nestling into Stede like she belonged there (Ed supposed she did) “I’ve heard all about you.” And I’ve heard nothing about you, Ed thought, bitterly (hating that he was so). The silence that followed was thick, palpable; so dense one could have cut it with a knife.

When Ed continued to say nothing, Stede jumped in, attempting to salvage the interaction.

“Yes! Mary, this is Ed.” Stede introduced, gesturing towards him. Ed. God he felt sick. Hadn’t he been happy a minute ago? “Edward, this is my wife, Mary.” His hand moved gently to the small of her back, and Ed wanted to scream and scream and scream.

Wife.

Maybe he wanted to cry instead; to fall to his knees and sob and weep like a small, mewling child.

Wife.

Or maybe he’d fling himself into the roiling, unforgiving Pacific Ocean, letting the sea salt and brine and waves wash away the hollow, unjust ache that had found a new, tender, wounding home inside his naive chest.

Wife.

God, he’d do anything, anything if it meant not feeling like this.

Ed had never wanted an old fashioned more in his life.

Stede Bonnet had a wife.

Of course he was fucking married.

“You work together, right?” Mary asked, as though nothing was wrong. As though she hadn’t unwittingly shattered Ed into a million tiny fractured pieces. As though she hadn’t stepped on his rose coloured glasses as soon as she’d arrived, pressing against Stede in all the ways Ed craved, but now understood he’d never have.

“Um, kinda. Work adjacent to each other, I guess.” Ed said tersely, not entirely sure how he was grinding out any words at all.

“And you made the cake? It looks lovely.”

“No, I- my friend Roach made it. Should check him out if you’re ever in Compton, he owns a bakery. Not that you’d ever be in Compton- Would you excuse me?” Ed asked, releasing himself from this hellish conversation of small talk and unspoken truths, walking off without waiting for a response.

Stede found Edward sometime later, hiding away in his study, perusing his impressive library-esque collection of books as Ed returned his copy of The Beautiful and the Damned. “Two souls are sometimes created together—and in love before they're born” Gloria had said. It settled over Ed with a great, heavy melancholy; a once sweet, sentimental quote turned bitter and ashy on his tongue. Was Mary that for Stede? Were they in love, before they were born?

“There you are!” Stede exclaimed, half-breathless, half-relieved as hell entered the room. Ed didn’t look away from the bookcase.

“Here I am.” He said numbly.

“Are you okay?” Stede joined him, his soft warmth radiating beside him. Ed hated the gentle care in his voice. How could one man be so considerate and inconsiderate all at once?

“Yeah. Needed a breather. ‘M just not good at these things, man.” Ed half-lied; dancing, flitting around the truth. “You didn’t tell me you had a wife.” He tacked on, trying to sound as casual and noncommittal as possible.

“I- it never came up.”

“I know your favourite colour is blue but your wife didn’t come up?” Ed laughed, an empty, vacant laugh.

Stede was quiet. Ed could feel him fidgeting nervously next to him, wringing his hands like wet cloth.

“I was… afraid.” That was…not the answer he was expecting. “We got married so young. Basically as soon as we graduated. I suppose I never mentioned it, because I didn’t want you to think less of me. For having a highschool sweetheart shotgun wedding.”

Ed turned to him, and fuck was that a mistake. Stede looked so devastatingly soft, and so devastatingly unsure.

“What part of me makes you think I’d ever judge you, Stede?” He asked, brows furrowing.

“I- god, you’re right. I’m sorry Edward, you’re lovely, of course you wouldn’t have- I should have known-” Edward ignored the lovely and held up a hand to stop Stede’s apologetic rambling.

“It’s fine, mate. Caught me off guard is all.” Ed lied and Stede’s shoulders visibly relaxed.

Ed spent what felt like an extended eternity in that study, surrounded by Stede and Stede’s things and Stede’s books. But he had to rejoin reality eventually, so he slunk out of the room many many minutes after Stede had exited to host his own party; careful to the outskirts of the already former social circles.

He had no desire to join any conversations, but the talk he overheard was interesting enough.

“ Did you hear about the embezzlement? How pedestrian. ”

“ I heard a rumor that he was sleeping with his second cousin. His cousin! Could you imagine?”

“ You simply have to visit France in the Winter. It’s divine. Never did quite develop a taste for snail, though.”

“You’re positively glowly. When are you due? Not that you’re showing my dear!”

“ November. A thanksgiving baby, if all goes well.” It was Mary’s voice, pleasant and polite and gracious. She smiled courteously at an older woman, nursing a chilled glass of water— no wine, no liquor, no cocktails, not with a child on the way.

Ed wasn’t sure what he’d expected. That’s what married couples did, right? Buy a home, build a family. Fancyman was as nuclear as they came, it should have been no surprise that he’d want the traditional perfect job, perfect house, perfect 2.5 kids. And yet— it still stung.

Fuck did sting; a thousand tiny wounds eating, chipping, slicing away at Ed’s heart. A heart he had thought had found love. But, as he was learning, it was a tainted and dark and painful kind of love. An unrequited kind of love. A dangerous kind of love.

And still, Ed couldn’t bear to let it go.

Even if-

Stede Bonnet’s wife was pregnant.

Day 18- On the Road Again

We drove to Masai Mara today. JD lent us his truck so we are on our own navigating the driving and Kenya in general. We have some “small money” stashed in the front of the truck in case we get stopped by the police, Google maps downloaded, snacks and water. Nairobi is known for its crazy traffic and I think because it was Boxing Day we may have gotten off easy. Still there were a ton of trucks hauling containers but mostly that was on the four lane highway. The driving conditions changed the closer we got to the Rift Valley. The view was spectacular, but the driving was insane. At one point a truck that was passing illegally pushed a motorcycle off the road but thankfully they were ok. There aren’t a lot of shoulders so options are pretty limiting. Once off the main highway, things got really interesting. Now you have to share the road with goats, cows, motorcycles and as we were heading to the Mara, hundreds of land cruisers filled with tourists.

Once we arrived in the “gate town” it was a gong show! Cows, sheep and goat caused a traffic hold up which allowed time for all of the “guides” and sellers, to approach your vehicle. Oriana and Mark stood in the line for an hour just to buy tickets to get into the park as so many people “budged” in front of them. Mark, needless to say, was not happy! Once they got to the front, he was told it was not the correct line to use visa so he had to move to another line. He wasn’t willing to wait again so he budged in the new line. In the meantime, Tamsyn and I relegated to sitting in the truck met a ton of women selling jewelry and carvings. I feel like we must have said no thank-you a million times. Some moved off easily but others were very persistent. The guilt trip of “you’re a mama, and I’m a mama” must work as we heard it many times.  

The drive into the park was wonderful. Each park seems to have its own personality. Here there is a lot green but not a lot of trees, tons of gazelles, impalas, topis, and zebras but hardly any giraffes and we didn’t see a single elephant and one jackal. Our accommodation, Aruba Mara Camp is just outside of the gate so we headed there so we could check in and also have time for a safari.

Robinson had recommended a guide named Lion who lost an eye to a lion. Guess who we met as we drove into our camp!?? A one eyed Masai who introduced himself as Edward but confirmed that he was also known as Lion. We quickly put our bags into our perfect safari tent and headed back into the park with Lion in JD’s truck. Tamsyn’s wish was to see leopards and cheetahs and Lion delivered. We first as a single male leopard, then a single female cheetah and then Oriana spotted a lion off in the distance and we were excited to find there were 6 of them! Things seem to be a bit different in the Mara, guides steer you off the main roads onto minimally used tracks and get very close to the wildlife also as we were not in a safari vehicle, we hung out the windows for the best views. In addition to the cats, we saw giraffes, zebras, gazelles, oryx, secretary birds, eagles, lots of hyenas, impalas, topis and more. We got out just before the park closed at 6:30.

When we got back we had more of a chance to explore our resort. They have a number of safari tents but you can also camp if you prefer. We choose a family tent and checked in to one that has a view of the river with a veranda, 4 beds and a great bathroom. Our accommodation includes full board and the good was so good that Oriana felt uncomfortably full! Tamsyn couldn’t even eat all her dessert, which is unheard of!
