Farmers could continue to produce high crop yields with far less use of artificial fertilisers if they adopted environmentally sustainable practices, an academic study has shown for the first time.
Techniques such as adding manure and compost to soils, growing nitrogen-fixing plants between crops, and cultivating a wide range of produce instead of sticking to the same crops, can all increase yields while protecting and improving the natural ecosystems of farms.
Chloe MacLaren, a plant ecologist at Rothamsted Research in the UK who is the lead author of the paper published on Monday in the peer review journal Nature Sustainability, said: “Reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers would help to buffer farmers and consumers against economic shocks, such as the current spike in fertiliser costs and consequent increase in food prices. Widespread uptake of these practices could also contribute to a more equitable global distribution of fertiliser.”

"if people don't farm animals then there won't be any fertiliser that is needed" - Liz Webster. How would you respond to this?
Alternatives to manure do exist. The only reason animal waste is used so univocally in agriculture is because we have so much of it and nowhere to put it - entire degree programs exist on training people how to solve this massive problem. Workers drowning in vast lakes of slurry is far more common than you’d think. as is them flooding and polluting local rivers. In fact waste run off is a huge issue, and is very likely to be responsible for the algae blooms wiping out marine animals.
If agriculture were less intensive and was done in a way that doesn't cause so much harm to soil (perennial plants, rotation of plants in the winter to hold soil quality, diversity of plants, encouraging the presence of insects and birds etc.) then we wouldn't need so much fertilsier. We could grow far more and far less land without animal agriculture, so the need to massively increase output every ten years to cope with rising demand would not be quite so pressing.
Besides, veganic farming (farming without animal inputs) is very much a thing, you can check out the Veganic Agriculture Network for more information on that. Plenty of farmers already do this. Using plants as fertiliser is just as effective as animal manure, and in this way we can make grow food which is completely free from animal inputs - which incidentally is mostly how forests are fertilised, featuring some of the most abundant plant-life on earth.
I'd also recommend checking out George Monbiot's book Regenesis, which is in large part devoted to discussing alternatives to industrial systems and the use of animal waste, without compromising on crop output or efficiency.

Gardening Tip: Nasturtium Water (Natural Fertiliser and Aphid Repellent)
Tumblr media
I always think one law of physics that works well in the kitchen is Lavoisier’s Law --“Nothing is lost, nothing is created; everything is transformed”-- which I mostly apply to leftovers! It works even better in the Kitchen Garden!
Think about it: Coffee Grounds repel slugs, and an Elder Leaf Decoction chases unwelcome rodents, whilst Nettle Soup and Onion Skin Decoction will help make your soil fertile; like Egg shells which can be used both outside or while caring for your house plants.
So can Nasturtium Water. It is the water you have blanched your Nasturtium leaves in, when making a delicious Nasturtium Pesto. Don’t throw it away (“Nothing is lost”!) Allow it to cool and then pour it in your watering can and water your plants with it.
You can also pour Nasturtium Water in a spray bottle and spritz it onto ferns in the house or in the garden, and onto growing carrots and Parsnips in the Kitchen Garden! It acts both as a fertiliser, helping your plants grow lush and green, and an aphid and white flies repellent, keeping your growing vegetables healthy!

Roses wither sadly on the lawn.
Invaders end up in black soil in the dawn.
Listen, Motherland,
You send your kids on the evil mission.
And they succumbed to your ambitions.
Time has passed away.
You have to admit that it doesn’t look good.
You sent your kids on the fascist route.
They got recruited in the military van.
Roses wither sadly on lawns
Invaders rot in the black soil at the dawn.
Listen, Motherland,
You convinced poor folks in deceitful manner
In honor of your brutal cannibal
To die in a foreign land.
Roses wither on the lawn.
Invaders rot in black soil at the dawn.
But remains in the dark old man.
The Chekist has dementia.
He tries to keep bloody war pressure.
And military losses keep rising.
Conscience flies away like a white bird,
And Russian soldiers turn to rot
Like a fertilizer.

Suddenly, the two occupants would state they had to leave. Remembering their questions, Wilcox offered to get them a bag of fertilizer to take with them to study.
Interestingly, Wilcox would return to the area of his encounter later that afternoon with a bag of fertilizer.
He left the bag near a tree next to the spot the UFO was hovering that morning.
When he returned the following morning, the fertilizer was no longer there.
