Blood peach, apricot and nectarine trees are starting to blossom.
This year I'm adding two new stone fruit trees: a flat peach and a flat nectarine.
I have this small, potted columnar apricot tree that's not quite columnar anymore and I'm thinking of trying my hand at grafting it with every type of stone fruit I have. Will have to wait until next spring for that, but I'm looking forward to it.

Did you know that a single tree can be made to produce multiple types of fruit? In this workshop led by artist and fruit tree expert Sam Van Aken, you will learn the basics of grafting, the ancient agricultural practice that makes hybrid trees possible.
Webinar facilitated by Sam Van Aken on May 16, 2020. Offered in partnership with the Trust for Governors Island Open Orchard Project: https://www.govisland.com/things-to-d...
The Open Orchard School is a two-year series of educational programs co-presented by NYC Parks GreenThumb and the Trust for Governors Island. The Open Orchard School is an extension of The Open Orchard, an expansive new artwork by Sam Van Aken on Governors Island that will take the form of a public orchard of 50 hybrid fruit trees. Each individual tree will contain multiple varieties of peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries and apples that were historically grown in the New York City region over the past 500 years, but which have been lost to climate change and the industrialization of agriculture, preserving their biodiversity for future generations. Many additional trees will be distributed to community gardens in all five boroughs. Through the Open Orchard School, community gardeners and members of the public will learn practical skills related to the project, including in-depth experience with fruit tree care, cultivation, planting, and grafting. Participants who complete multiple workshops can become part of the team working to ensure the ongoing stewardship of the trees as they put down roots across the city.

The 120-stitch graft on a Möbius strip always looks like an abject disaster but you just have to keep stitching and. It will work out. Right???

4/1/24 ~ We learned how to graft tomatoes last week at school! Grafting is when you combine two different varieties. We used Rootstock tomatoes for the base because they produce a lot of fruit and have a strong root system. For the tops, we used heirloom tomatoes which are known for being finicky and not produce as much (Cherokee Purple & Brandywine). This was my first time doing it and I had a lot of fun. I’m actually ordering some stuff to do my own science experiments with 🧪🌱

Rasbids are creatures who pride themselves on agression and resilience. One of their more interesting traits, is their obsession with iron and steel. A clan of Rasbid obligates its members to seek out ways to graft metal, machines and gears within their body.
This willigness to replace their body with iron is quite an interesting prospect. Those who dabble in the arts of fleshcrafting and prosthetics have willing subjects that they can test their craft on.

A week and a half after my second tree peony kicked out flowers, the herbaceous peony it was originally grafted to decided to put on a show as well. So, two types of flowers from one plant this year. Weird but neat.
Also, the tree peony part is called a scion during the grafting dealio.

A while ago I made 5 Mutant Goblin monsters who had augmented their bodies with parts from the 5 colors of Chromatic Dragons in D&D (Red, Blue, Green, Black, and White). It all started when 1 poor Goblin lost an arm and found a severed Green Dragon claw to replace it, little did he know this dragon claw was still very magical and possibly also cursed so as it was grafted to his body it started transforming him, making him stronger, smarter, and took on the cunning manipulative personality of a Green Dragon! That Goblin went on to become the boss of his Goblin horde by eating his old Goblin Boss and it inspired other goblins to try to do the same and started worshiping Tiamat the evil goddess of Chromatic Dragons believing she could grant some of them the same kind of amazing transformation and powers if they also attached Dragon parts to their bodies. I imagine Tiamat looked at this bunch of lowley goblins worshiping her and found it amusing, maybe even want to see just how far and destructive this new cult could go before they eventually destroy themselves so she granted their prayers and helped create 4 more Dragoblins Lords. Green is the original and the Mastermind of the five Dragoblins. He believes he doesn't need Tiamat's intervention and doesn't like that she decide to allow other gobins to be blessed with draconic powers copying him when he worked for it himself. Still he is adaptable and cunning using his cleverness and cruelty to his advantage so that he stays on top and finds a way to use the other Dragoblin lords. Red believes that he is meant to be the true leader of the Dragoblins, Red Dragons are supposed to be the mightiest of the Chromatics and he was the first of the Goblins that was truly chosen by Tiamat herself so he has divine right backing him. He is about as self absorbed as they come and constantly pushing to try to prove his superiority through strength and displays of power and beating down on anybody below him. Blue is the most negotiable, he's not kind or lacking in cruelty by any means but he prefers to show his enemies just how powerless they are to him by forcing them into a deal that screws them over and benefits himself. It is rare that he kills his enemies when he finds it so much more satisfying to subjugate them and make them lose all hope. Black is the most violent and destructive of the Dragoblins, he doesn't care who he kills or why, he just enjoys the thrill of causing Death and Suffering. He will even kill his own Goblin subjects and followers when he's bored and has nobody else to kill but time making him the most despised of the 5 Dragoblin lords and the most controllable so long as you can supply him with sacrifices White is a loner, as soon as his full Dragoblin transformation took hold he wanted nothing more than to be left alone, and killed anybody who came too close or got in his way. He has no subjects or followers unlike the other Dragoblins lord, instead he isolated himself in a frozen mountain cavern where he only leaves to hunt for prey and make avalanches to keep other people away from his territory. If I were to run a D&D campaign I would want to use these as the primary villains of an arc where the party has to find a way to bring down each of the Dragoblin lords one by one saving the Green Dragoblin mastermind for last cause he has a special plan to use the reclaimed bodies of his fallen lords to mock Tiamat by merging himself with the other 4 handily slain by the party for his convenience and make himself a monstrosity in her image. The Ultimate Dragoblin and soon to be God of a new Draconic Goblin Super Race! I love the idea of Tiamat watching from the 9 hells and get offended seeing this monstrosity copying her look and claiming they are going to be a new god.

Alright the June orchard reports- let's start with the pawpaws
Tumblr media
You may remember the one autumn wherein my oldest pawpaw's young trunk got bent to the ground, as you can see that it's recovered pretty decently since! So much growth race for maturity continues. Did you know that there's an Ontarian pawpaw group where some peeps exchange pollen so their lonely trees can get a partner thanks to hand pollination? I'm used to hearing about pollen collection for daylilies, true lilies, and African violets but I nevef considered pollen trading, that's pretty cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2 of the 3 younger pawpaws planted last year are fully leafed out and out joining on the growth race thanks to the supplemental water followed by rain the week after. Looks like our older tree will get some closeby partners after all, with maybe a few year delay.
Tumblr media
The 3rd planted pawpaw still hasn't shown any attempts at budding but you can see what I spoke about in early spring; it would appear that the half with all the important buds got snapped off from the trunk/root half. I suspect snowload cause last winter was pretty crazy for the snow heights in the orchard. Still hoping it tries to push some miracle buds or a sucker but I think the poor thing is much too young to pull that trick card out of its pocket.
Alright now for the Pewaukee apple grafts since none of you have had any photos up till now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seniors first- the only successful grafted tree (which was a miracle according to the guy who's been doing our graftings, since that year there wasn't any good young scionwood to work since we hadn't done any force pruning) from last spring has been doing great and has also been taking off, may even get out of the protection tube within the growing season at this rate!
Next, the 4 grafts from this spring specifically.
Tumblr media
The remaining unplanted one appears to have succeeded! I removed the rootstock shoots that were below the hand so that the scionwood can dominate.
Tumblr media
The other planted tree's graft on the south end of the orchard has not only taken, but it looks like this one's gonna REALLY take off for its first season!
The other two graft attempts were done on two full grown trees (the plan being that those trees will be trained to have one dedicated branch just for Pewaukee.
Tumblr media
First was on one of our smaller trees. No dice 👎
Maybe it'll take late and push some surprise growth but I highly doubt it.
Tumblr media
Next and last was onto the one tree that is always first on the spring pruning queue, and was the one the grafting guy had me try to do by my own hands. I had to really stick my head into the leaves to find it to check/photograph. I'll be damned my second ever grafting attempt has succeeded!!!! I'm pretty stoked, and it's definitely making me a lil hungry to try more grafting with my own hands.
The tape in all of these should be removed mid-july according to the grafting expert so I'll have to keep that on account.

Similarly, grafting a shoot from the LDP Petunia hybrida onto a stock of the cold-requiring biennial henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) caused the latter to flower under long days, even though it was nonvernalized (Figure 20.18).
