Sometimes i think about how, when i was 17, i was told in the back room of a cosplay competition at middle east film and comic con "dont worry, youll get good at costume design with practice."

At that point, id been doing those competitions for 6 years, i was just making my costumes from complete scratch out of a budget of a teenagers allowance money and limited in my reach to whatever stores i could access with my bus pass, in a country where it was illegal for minors to work. Being told that by someone in her mid 30s by my estimate was so thoroughly soul-crushing that ive never entered a cosplay contest since.

The thing is, i was actually really good for what i had to work with. I realized later that no one who would place actually made their costumes from the ground up like i did, they would get them custom-made and drop hundreds of dollars on them, while i managed to carve out a bow for a hawkeye cosplay out of two wood planks and an old ethernet cable in my schools woodshop. It was a little rough and unevenly sanded and the string was very obviously a spray painted cable but i made a whole bow! Out of 5 bucks worth of material and whatever favours i had available to me by being in the student council at the time.

I dont know what point im trying to make here. Something about thinking before you speak or presume things of peoples skill levels, because to this day i wonder if i had more raw skill than the person who said that to me simply because i had to work thrice as hard as they did to qualify for a competition at all because everyone i competed with was at least twice my age with jobs and plenty of disposable income to drop on a costume they didnt really have to have any hand in making themselves, or the equipment to do it to professional standards. (Because trust me, no one is hurting for cash if theyre living in dubai)

and yeah yeah i know you only get better by doing, but idk if i just. have enough enjoyment of it to rly justify focusing on it a bunch over like, writing+drawing and stuff... plus theres not a lot of events where i live for it. 

not gonna stop, like, going to cons and wearing the costumes i have currently have, but just finish what ive started and call it there for now,,, no new stuff for now,,, i have enough i need to work on anyways to keep me busy for a bit,,,, sell some of my wigs and stuff,,,,

i also just have some Not Great Feelings about my body rn since ive gained a lot of weight in the last few years and having to make clothes for it or focus on how things fit is Not Helping.

my favorite character tropes are either the "soft only for you" trope (because i am sad and lonely) or the "starts normal or even sweet and then hardens like a rock and kills people" trope. i love when characters have trauma that just... sets them free, i guess. they do things they could never have done without their past experiences pushing them.

story tropes? i am a fan of love in hopeless situations with hopeless endings, villain was the victim all along (bonus points of there's no redemption arc because i only enjoy depressing media), and found family. i also love when childhood friends are put in horrible situations (death games, dystopia, apocalypse, etc) just to see how they react and deal with each other.

That girl who seemed like she ought to be a mean girl but wasn't. (I cheated and looked her up. Yes, she's a lesbian. No, she's not Kamala's future girlfriend. Damn.)

But I just felt like I was being force fed massive amounts of product placement.

And yes, I get that Kamala is a fangirl, and that's part of her characterisation, but with the MCU being the way it is, that's not how it came off. It came off as, "Hey, remember how we have all these OTHER films? And that you can BUY THINGS to connect better to those films? Wouldn't that be awesome? Remember Captain Marvel and the Hulk and Iron Man and Black Widow and Ant-Man and Thor? Buy our stuff!"

I love fan culture – heck, I'm a part of it – and I go to cons sometimes, and yet AvengerCon felt really hollow to me. Here's a whole con devoted to the properties of one particular company, and the protagonist's part of it is to emulate one (toy-selling) character while sharing screen as many images of other characters as possible.

Plus, in-universe, the Avengers are real. They were part of battles where they saved a lot of people, and a lot of other people died.

(And no, btw, I don't like the Avengers movies either, or Civil War for that matter. Every time more than three MCU heroes are in the same room, the whole thing tends to turn into a cash grab.)

If they tone down that shit and let the actual storyline take center stage, I may some day try another ep, especially if there are lesbians.

Finally did a make up and wig test for a character I've wanted to do for a few years now. Kate Bishop aka hawkeye! Apart from having to buy the wig, this whole 'costume' is quite literally a closet cosplay as I've had everything in my wardrobe/laying around anyway! Eventually I'm going to invest in the mcu outfit for her and her comic suit along with many other costumes but for now, her casuals will do me just fine!

McCall'sM7554 with alterations to look like Hawkeye. The fabric isn't quite the color I would like it to be and because I am making it as a shirt and leggings it will not have the trademark hip holes. But the shirt came out really well all things considered.
