Storytelling over Holst’s Planets!

So today is the anniversary of the first Japanese (civilian) who went up into space!

Honoured the occasion by playing Holst’s planets and story telling over it, Peter & the Wolf style.

Only big problem was fitting it into under 14 mins for the radio show. Listened to the work in its entirety several times before cutting & stitching in the most musical way possible.

But of course, nothing better than to hear it the way it was intended, so hopefully you’ll want to hear the whole work now!

First time using Reaper. Feels quite intuitive?

Personally, today marks the release of ‘Moomins and the Winter Wonderland’. 5 years flew by just like that!

I also did the voice acting for this red squirrel. Was an honour to wish the Moomins a Merry Christmas🎄

Classical Music Suites Bracket

Hi everyone! After the success that the symphony bracket has been so far I thought I'd keep the fun going by hosting the suites bracket that was initially discussed on that blog. The format will remain quite similar, but I'll clarify this when the tournament starts which will likely be sometime in December. There is only the one mod, so please be patient with me (oh also she/they pronouns please).

I'm accepting submissions, so here's some guidelines for that:

Please make submissions to the ask box.

You can include propaganda if you would like to but you don't have to.

If there is a specific recording that you would like me to use please specify it in your submission.

For the purposes of this bracket suite is fairly broad, though it will be restricted to suites with at least 2 movements. Please don't submit works that are other forms (eg. symphony, concerto, opera etc). If the mod determines that a submission is not clearly a suite then a poll will be created to determine general consensus.

The number of suites to make it into the bracket is yet to be determined, but it will be either 16, 32, or 64, depending on the number of submissions.

As submissions come in, I will add them to the bottom of this post every so often.

Also as an extra little novelty, feel free to guess the suite, movement, and instrument of the sheet music in the header image :)

So I got bored last night while jamming to some classic music and it led to this...

The sons of Feanor assigned Planets from the Holst suite...

Maedhros - Jupiter

The music just sounds as gallant and noble as the first born of Feanor is. The king of planets' music for the High King of the Noldor. And the slower stately part of the piece (what gets extracted for the song I Vow to Thee My Country) feels very appropriate for a soundtrack to the peace he and Fingon foster together.

Maglor - Neptune

It's not just the water association that both Maglor and Neptune have at work here. The whole piece has a beautiful forlornness to it that is also an easy summarization of Maglor's tragic life. Plus all the strings near the beginning make me think of him playing his harp by the sea

Celegorm - Saturn

The music is subtle like the workings of Celegorm's mind. A slow methodical creeping melody tinged with hints of the sinister. An unexpected blare of horns for the great hunter and his hound approach and then back to the lower tones as he stalks his prey

Caranthir - Mars

It's in the name "bringer of war" I feel there's no need to really explain why this aggressive piece of music inspired by the planet named for Mars the god of War is the perfect piece for contentious Caranthir

Curufin - Venus

He is the image of his father's wisdom and skill with words. He is well spoken and where his nearest older brothers are always stirring up strife he supports with a more subtle touch. The gentler rippling melody suits the dutiful brother who follows the lead and offers love and support to his kin and is even fair enough to let Eöl go in spite of his loathing of him. He's the chill one of the middle three which isn't saying a whole lot when it comes to Feanorians I know

Amrod - Uranus

The one who in one version was set fire to by accident by Feanor in the burning of the ships at Losgar this more disjointed musical piece fits the various views that exist for Amrod's narrative. There's a dramatic beginning to the piece just as there is to Amrod's life being named "fated" by his mother. But the melody gets more merry and you can almost see Amrod and his twin brother riding far and wide enjoying a hunt in their lands around Estolad

Amras - Mercury

Youngest and therefore to my mind the most playful the jubilant whirling melody of Mercury fits best to the baby of the family. There's not much on the twins but I like to imagine that perhaps rather than always riding sometimes Amras runs during the hunts with his brother and is very fleet-footed and really into enjoying nature for a Noldor. I mean after all he was the twin okay with sleeping on the ground while Amrod went back onto the ships to sleep(in the one version). Just my headcanon for him about being a little nature boy because I refuse to fall into "twins are exactly the same" thinking. Anyone who's known twins in real life knows that's not true and I've known lots of twins. My dad is even a twin.

OTD in Music History: Important composer, master orchestrator, and noted music teacher Gustav Holst (1874 – 1934) dies in Britain. The sickly son of a Swedish father and an English mother, Holst studied at the Royal College of Music in London. His own instrument of choice was the trombone, and for a number of years after graduating he made a living playing in the Carl Rosa Opera Company and in various other regional orchestras. Holst eventually became music master at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in 1905, and then director of music at Morley College in 1907; he thereafter retained both of those posts until the end of his life. Best known as a composer for his phenomenally popular orchestral suite "The Planets" (1917), Holst actually composed a sizable body of works that spanned a wide range of genres -- but none of his other works has achieved comparable popular success. Holst's distinctive compositional style was an amalgam of many influences, with Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) and Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) both looming particularly large -- although, along with his close friend and colleague Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958), he also drew particular inspiration from the English "folksong revival" of the early 20th century. Aside from "The Planets," other notable works by Holst include the opera "Sita" (1906); "The Hymn of Jesus" for chorus and orchestra (1917); "Ode to Death" for chorus and orchestra (1919); the opera "The Perfect Fool (1923); the "Choral Symphony" (1924); the opera "At the Boar’s Head" (1925); the "Double Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra" (1929); and "Hammersmith" for large orchestra (1930). Classical music for people with short attention spans

Nothing but bangers here. Thought I'd make a list of my favorite classical pieces on the off chance that anyone will see this and actually want to listen to these-

Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin – first piece on my "classical bangers" playlist. As a clarinetist myself, the opening clarinet gliss makes me so happy and the piece just keeps going from there. Every single section is amazing and it doesn't feel "stuffy" at all like some other classical pieces might.

Diane: Overture by Claude Debussy – while not one of his more well-known works, this piece is so joyful and perfectly evokes the feeling of frolicking in a flower-filled meadow somewhere. Absolutely love all the delicate riffs and the sense of movement it evokes.

Jupiter (From The Planets) by Gustav Holst – another classical banger. Interesting rhythms, powerful instrumentation, a whole bunch of jollity. Can't go wrong.

Danzón no. 2 by Gustavo Dudamel and Arturo Márquez (I like the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra version) – wow. I don't even know how to describe this one. The palpable sense of energy and joy it creates is almost beyond words for me. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing skip to like 6:30 and you'll get the jist.

Chocolate from The Nutckraker by Tchaikovsky – this is my go-to for waltzing around my room. Love the sweeping strings and energetic castanets. 10/10 motivation during study breaks.

he won't stop complimenting you for the food and he'll eat every last bit of it, since he doesn't want to leave leftovers after you worked so hard to make this food for him! 

he's also pretty clingy and would honestly love to spend as much time with you as he can! 

he always has an arm wrapped around you or when the two of you are going somewhere together, he insists on carrying you!

hilda is quite happy that someone else now gets all her brother's love and she has more time for herself again

though she does like you a lot and she appreciates how happy you make her brother! 

and holst is really happy too, knowing you and his sister get along so well!

honestly magical. dramatic start, Jupiter both breaks my heart and makes me feel alive, the fading chorus at the end is like floating away into space. I don’t have a favourite recording. However I should mention that Melodica Men did a wonderful rendition of Jupiter that I’d like to share (they did Mars too but I like this more):
