Researchers develop novel method to photosynthesize hydrogen peroxide using water and air
Researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have developed a microporous covalent organic framework with dense donor–acceptor lattices and engineered linkages for the efficient and clean production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) through the photosynthesis process with water and air. Traditional industrial production of H2O2 via the anthraquinone process using hydrogen and oxygen is highly energy-intensive. This approach employs toxic solvents and expensive noble-metal catalysts and generates substantial waste from side reactions. In contrast, photocatalytic production of H2O2 from oxygen and water offers an energy-efficient, mild, and clean route. Most importantly, it addresses the common drawbacks of existing photocatalytic systems, such as low activity, heavy use of additional alcohol sacrificial donors, and the necessity for pure oxygen gas input.

A study published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces describes a novel method of producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) without emitting carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the main greenhouse gases and one of the world's most widely produced chemicals.
Hydrogen peroxide is used to bleach fabric, pulp and paper, and to whiten teeth. It is also used as a thruster fuel for satellite attitude control, and as a disinfectant or sterilizing agent by hospitals. Some 2 million metric tons of the compound are produced annually.
"To understand the impact of our findings, it's important first and foremost to bear in mind the significance of H2O2 in the chemical industry and the way it's currently produced," said Ivo Freitas Teixeira, a professor of chemistry at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in São Paulo State, Brazil. He has a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of São Paulo (USP) and was a Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Germany, between 2019 and 2021.

Some great tips here. A couple of the suggested uses were new to me, but I’m definitely going to give them a try! They will be a good use of my expiring stock when I go to replace it with fresher bottles, too.

Maybe everyone already knows this and I’m just an idiot, but the other day I learned you are NOT supposed to clean wounds with hydrogen peroxide because of a bunch of science nonsense that I’m not going to attempt to reiterate but basically it will end up making it a lot harder for your body to complete the healing process? (If science tumblr wants to commandeer this post and explain better by all means please do)

i know the older people get the more they become fixated on the ONE MIRACLE CHEMICAL THAT CAN DO EVERYTHING, but seriously
years ago we figured out not to use it as an antiseptic on wounds, but since that Household Antiseptic falloff, as a society we have been sleeping on adding 3% hydrogen peroxide to water and using it to
• sterilise soilless growing medium
• sterilise potting soil
• on a damp cloth in a plastic bag to transport cuttings
• whiten teeth
• kill algae and moss on deck surfaces AND on cedar shake roofs (be careful, do your research)
• on various bodily crevices and folds when you can't access a bath (unbroken skin only, does too much damage to healthy, granulating skin in wounds)
• deep cleaning cutting boards
• washing produce without detergents
• cleaning your fridge without huffing chlorine
like there's some shit where you need bleach (there really is no household substitute, as an antimicrobial cleaner in bathrooms) or washing soda/soda ash (a strong, biodegradable degreaser you can make yourself by pouring sodium bicarbonate in a clean roasting pan and cooking it in your oven for an hour at 200°F. when you are finished it is sodium carbonate!).
"rachel if that shit was any good we wouldn't have bespoke swiffer fluids and scrubbing bubbles for every individual bathroom and kitchen surface" you have those things because capitalism told post-war housewives that if they used the cleaning supplies their grandmothers used, they were bad wives, bad mothers, possibly communists, and definitely cowardly backsliders betraying the Age Of The Atom by not having the latest phosphates and bioaccumulative dioxins coating every surface .
Besides, phosphates and dioxins DID work, extremely fucking well, they just turned out to be so horrifically bad for the environment that it took nearly 30 years to convince people to stop using them, and another 30 years for people to forget and start using them again (please stop fucking using them).

Shout-out to Boomer/Gen X parents who wrestled with their kids to apply hydrogen peroxide to their "boo-boos" and had to watch them suffer, only to later discover that it makes it WORSE.
You were doing the best you could with the information you had.
Shout-out to the millennial kids who had to endure a second, worse injury to their "boo-boos" only to discover etc.
I remember 7 y/o me crying when I fell on the bus stairs, not because I skinned my knee, but because I knew what Happened Next.
