Sam breathes deep, the smell of citrus filling her lungs.

No matter how hard she tries, she can never catch the scent on herself. But on Tara? She’d recognise her even from across the room.

With her sister in her arms, it permeates them both and leaves her dizzy.

Or maybe that’s just the effect Tara has on her.

It’s always so hard to think when she’s near.

She can imagine just what she would say if she told her that. Good, she’d remark, smug and proud. You need to relax more Sammy, gentle and loving.

Sam opens her mouth, but lets the words fall away and moves to drop a kiss on her sister’s head instead.

Not now, not tonight. It’s been too long, a plague of nightmares besetting them both, as it had every night since Halloween.

It was weighing them both down, and with Christmas on the way, they knew their time was running out.

They would be caught sooner or later.

How much longer could they fend off texts and calls and banging on their door?

Sam wasn’t ready – the world too much to take. She just wanted her sister right where she is, safe in her arms, bundled together and away from the storm outside.

She couldn’t even leave the apartment anymore with the media always lurking.

They just want to be left alone, to heal.

Are they healing?

The way Tara trembles against her suggests not.

The way Sam can only sleep an hour at a time, wrapped around her sister and with a knife in her hands tells her they need help.

She’s not ready for their peace to be broken.

But Sam’s always been good at breaking things.

She does it anyway.

“We can’t do this on our own.”

The words linger in the room. Sam waits with bated breath for acknowledgement.

She knows Tara’s awake, she can feel the hand spread across her side, fingers tracing Richie’s last kiss.

“I don’t care,” Tara eventually whispers, looking up. “I just need you.”

She looks so tired.

Sam cups her sister’s cheek, thumb brushing against bruised skin. “I wish that were true babygirl.”

Her next words are hard to admit to herself, and even harder to say. It feels like a betrayal of everything she is, a failure.

“I can’t give you what you need.”

Sam can’t help Tara. She can’t even help herself.

It would be so romantic, to proclaim they only need one another, that the rest of the world would fall into place so long as they had each other by their sides.

But romance is not reality.

They’re just two broken shards from the same mirror, forever trying to pick up the other with blood-slick hands.

They can’t put themselves back together.

But for the first time in so long, they have a family, waiting at their door with gloves and glue.

All they have to do is let them in.
