tw for mentions of substance abuse (part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7)
ao3
Steve Harrington has been awake for fifty four hours. With luck, he'll be able to eke out another eighteen. Three days seems to be the sweet spot, even if he only makes it there half the time and, of that half, it only works half the time.
It's better than nothing.
Maybe four days is the sweet spot. Ninety six is close to one hundred, and that seems like a good omen.
Omens don't really matter though. What matters is staying awake.
So, Steve chugs his coffee and walks into the conference room. Coffee isn't enough, not nearly, but it'll do until he gets desperate enough to take something.
He really does try to only take them when he's desperate. It's easier that way, to just do it when he feels like he needs to rather than measuring dosages and remembering times. Hours start to blur around hour forty of being awake.
He walks in, sits down in the chair closest to the door, and is met with a withering glare from Eddie Munson.
Listen. Steve isn't happy about this either, but at least he doesn't look like he stepped in dog shit on the way here. Then again, Steve doesn't have the luxury of ever looking truly unhappy.
Eddie is a rock star. Mean is part of his brand, while mean is the antithesis to Steve's.
Whatever.
"Are you kidding me?" Eddie says, still staring at him, but Steve knows he's not who he's asking.
"He's the best person for the job," Chrissy, Eddie's manager, says.
"We don't need him."
Someone taps Steve's left shoulder. He turns to see Jeff, the lead singer of Corroded Coffin, give him a warm smile.
"Nice to meet you, Steve," he says, and Steve shakes his proffered hand.
"Happy to help," he says, and it's only half a lie.
The drummer and the bassist - Steve would probably be able to remember their names if he wasn't so exhausted - wave their hellos from a few seats away.
"Hi, Steve," Chrissy says.
He takes another swig of his coffee and gives her a little wave in response.
"We don't need a pop singer to write lyrics for us," Eddie says, still not letting this go.
"Yes, you do," Steve says. He sets his coffee cup down on the table and opens the folder he brought with him. "I read through the lyrics of every one of your songs."
"You didn't even listen to them?"
"Would have taken too much time."
That's a lie. Listening, even with the lengthy guitar solos, probably would have taken less time. But Steve needs something to fill the hours when he's supposed to be asleep, and reading, that slow process with its ample, awakening frustration, is the perfect thing.
"You became so much less interesting after your first album," he says. "Every one of your songs talks about the same thing. Conquering evil, killing demons, blah blah blah."
"That's what's in right now," Eddie snaps.
Out of the corner of his eye, Steve catches the drummer and Chrissy make the same motion. They pinch the bridges of their noses, clearly frustrated.
Steve sees why Chrissy wanted to talk to him.
"It is," he concedes. "But I also read the lyrics of every song by the bands with top ten hits. They don't talk about it nearly as much. They sing about other stuff. And they don't use an F major chord in every one of their songs."
"We don't-"
"We kinda do, Eddie," the bassist pipes up. "I'm a little sick of playing F."
Eddie takes a breath. Steve takes the opportunity to take a pill.
He found a way to make it less obvious for people who have something to say about it. Steve will take one from his pocket, yawn, cover his mouth, and swallow it dry. Easy peasy. They don't notice, he doesn't have to deal with people who don't get it making comments.
Except when he does, this time, Eddie narrows his eyes. Like he knows what he's doing.
Steve doesn't like that look.
"Have you read my stuff?" He won't ask if Eddie has listened to any of it. He knows the answer is no, if he keeps bringing up genre like that really means anything.
Eddie doesn't respond. He keeps those narrowed eyes trained on Steve and stays silent.
"Didn't think so," he says, and he slides over the thick stack of papers Robin stapled together for him last night. "Here's everything. Read it. Tell me if you like it. I'm only helping you if you give a shit. This goes two ways, and I don't want to waste my time if you think I'm wasting yours."
Eddie doesn't take the stack, but the drummer, sitting next to him, tugs them closer. "Thanks."
"Let me know tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" Jeff says, eyebrows raised.
Steve forgets that most people don't actually take advantage of their twenty four hours.
"End of the week," he says instead, and he relaxes when Jeff does.
The drummer starts flipping through the pages while the bassist looks over his shoulder.
"Need anything else from me?" Steve asks Chrissy.
"I don't think so," she says. "I'll call you back to set up a time for Saturday."
He's amazed by the fact that someone as sweet as her works with someone as pretentious as Eddie.
"Sounds good," he says, and he walks out, trying to ignore the feeling of Eddie's eyes on him as he goes through the door.
It only halfway works.
The pill should kick in soon, within a half hour, maybe shorter because of the coffee. Maybe he'll write something. Maybe he'll work on the piano melody he's been tinkering with for the past week. Maybe he'll read the latest book Robin picked up from the library, something interesting enough to be worth the frustration of the moving letters, something that will still fill the time.
He'll make it to seventy two hours. Then he'll crash because his body is a worthless piece of shit, and he hopes this is the half of the time when he doesn't have any goddamn nightmares.
Maybe he should pop another pill, just in case.

— AESTHETIC;; lost cause in their parents eyes but not their own, make-up always on point & dramatic, always tapping fingers mindlessly in beat even when not listening to music, unwavering faith, loses themselves in a good album, searching eyes under sunglasses, thin silver chain with diamond pendant around neck, faint callouses from years of playing, here for a good time not a long time mentality, adrenaline junkie, wild card, delicate exterior but feisty on the inside, like tinkerbell and needs attention to survive, sarcasm as their defense mechanism.
wanted connections here
— BASICS;;

OCCUPATION : musician - singer & rhythm guitarist for neon nostalgia
GENDER IDENTITY : demi female (she/they pronouns)
SEXUAL ORIENTATION : pansexual, pan romantic
EXTRA : filling jonathan yoon’s bandmate wc as singer/guitarist
POSITIVE TRAITS : determined, comedic, out-going, creative
NEGATIVE TRAITS : sarcastic, reckless, stubborn, impulsive

— A LOOK DEEPER;;
Kim Alexis, born in New York and only child. Their parents stars in the medical field and it was thought that Ale would follow in the same paths. At six years old, accompanied their parents to a music performance and fell in love with music. begged their parents that if they did well in school, they wanted to take music lessons. they said yes and next thing you know, they was taking violin classes.
it was in these classes, her instructor saw how quickly se learned the instruments and Alexis asked to learn another. it was discovered she was a musical prodigy, picking up instruments quickly (her faves to play: violin, piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet). her instructor asked her parents to enter her in competitions. they said yes as it would look good in college applications. doing that for years until high school
As a senior in highschool, their parents pushed them to apply to ivy leagues and major in medicine or math but Ale had other plans. They chose a university where they could major in music. Their parents gave them an ultimatum: follow their plans and get everything paid for by them or do what they wants but with no financial support. They grabbed their stuff, said fuck you loved them, and left, doing what they wanted to do.
Fast forward to now: went to university (being the favorite of their grandparents who paid for their education, bought them a luxury apartment in the city, and gives them a weekly allowance), got a BA in music production, and is living their life on the social scene. Alexis is in a band as their singer, playing rhythm guitar, and loves it. Enjoys producing songs for their bands and others, writing lyrics, and partying.
TDLR ;;
Personality wise, is too smart for their own good and knows it. was known at high school for being the party girl who loves music too much for their own good. music prodigy with being able to play five instruments. never go to karaoke with her because she can actually sing. is an actual nerd, like I can't stress it enough, especially when it comes to math. she thrives on it and numbers are their thing, could have majored in math like her parents wanted them to but said no.
never dare or do a bet with Alexis because you will lose. loves to prove others wrong about them, hence why she is currently learning Latin because someone said they couldn't. loves to fight back others for the fuck of it because eh why not, its her motto. has them parental issues so whoops and always causes a commotion when obligated to go to family functions. is really the poster child of ‘looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you if provoked.
Ships wise, when it comes to friends is there for them. loyal to a fault for them and yes, will be honest with them about things. they will give advice and if they don’t take it, is like 'oh well' and then if something happens, would probably tell you 'I told you so' afterwards but still help them out. hates to admit it but she is the mom in the friend group.
as for relationships, she may not look it but is an actual romantic. like gives you flowers or chocolates, maybe even plays you music on their guitar or writes you songs, she’s that girl. but also because she is so out-going most likely has slept around town. do not blame them if they starts flirting, can’t help herself.

Tracklist Breakdown #1
One of the central motifs in I Can Always Hear You Sing (available to read here) is music; it's hugely important in the lives of the characters and in the structure of the work itself. Every chapter is named after a song that relates to the events of the chapter, and is preceded with some lyrics from that song that say a lot about what's to come.
I'd thought I'd do a breakdown of why I've chosen the songs and the lyrics that I have. Because I'm definitely 110% normal and sane about this (this is a lie, I got my autism diagnosis 2 days ago).
This will contain spoilers for the story so maybe read that first. Now without further ado...
Track 0: Nostalgia
Track 0: Nostalgia - Suki Waterhouse
I just need to know that you are happy So if it couldn't be me, then go ahead, forget me I traced my steps back to where we first met And hold the memory 'til you slip away I talk about the past like I talk about you I leave out every little thing that I don't like remembering I miss you more than I say I do You had to follow all your dreams, just wish that they included me
Track 0 is a short prologue, set further down the timeline than the opening events of the story. It gives a glimpse into Amara seeing that Kace's band, Vengeful Glory, are returning to their home town to play a gig and her realisation that she wants to see him.
The lyrics above are the ones I chose to preface this chapter, from the song Nostalgia (Suki Waterhouse), which is an absolutely gorgeous track if you haven't listened to it.
At that point in the timeline, Amara is realising that she doesn't want things between her and Kace to end how they did back when they last saw each other. That they want to at least try to be friends with him, if that's what he wants to. Amara very much wants to take the final steps towards healing after the trauma of their initial break up, to share with him why she did what she did, to give them both closure. And if they can't be anything else, then at least they can leave in peace?
(editor's note: that's a real fancy way of saying this a soulmate AU)
Although the prologue is told from Amara's perspective, the song is a reflection of both of them in that moment. Kace has always been haunted by Amara's decision and not knowing why she decided to end it. Despite healing from that break up and moving on the best he could, for Kace, the words I love you have never felt quite the same since her. He definitely doesn't think about anymore, especially not when he's writing songs
(this man is a simp and is definitely still thinking about her)
The lines from that little section that I think resonate for them both are
I miss you more than I say I do You had to follow all your dreams, just wish that they included me
All they wanted was to build a life with each other. But they were ripped apart by a history of trauma, their own internal struggles, and the people around them. That has kept them apart for so long and this moment is them both tuning into what their hearts want, admitting what they haven't been able to. It's an impulsive cry for love, for the person that they connected with in a way that they have never felt again.
It is also major foreshadowing because they reunite in the same gig venue (The Bridge) that the beginning of their breakup happened in.
I traced my steps back to where we first met And hold the memory 'til you slip away
(editor's note: it's a whole cyclical structure, this moment foreshadows so much)
This song, as a prologue, establishes their need for closure from what happened, and how they will always be drawn back together.

so you've posted a lot about måneskin and other bands of the like but im just wondering - do you have any playlists you'd like to share? like, ones with songs you like or maybe a playlist you listen to while you write. i think it would be interesting seeing what you like to listen to with somewhat of a face to connect your music taste to?? (you're really pretty, by the way) 🫶
I think you'll like this ask
I fucking love love love music so I do post quite a bit about it, lol. Plus, I have thought about doing something like what @ixalit did with sharing all his playlists (that are *chef's kiss,* by the way. I have discovered many songs through those playlists 👀) but my Spotify, that I've had for years, is connected to my actual name that I'm not willing to share on Tumblr with this type of fandom account, lol.
I know I could make another account and transfer my playlists to a fandom specific account, but... that's a lot of work. I don't know if I'll do that, lol. If enough people were interested... maybe?
Besides, I don't really have a single playlist I write to. I just throw on whatever and write. Sometimes, I seek out specifically explicit music when I'm writing smut but usually not. Usually, it's whatever that I was playing the last time I had the app open or whatever I'm feeling that day.
And my music taste is a mess haha, I'm all over the fucking place with music. I think if I had to pin it down, my musical soft spot has always been for heavier sounds. Aggressive, heavy shit like all types of metal, rock, and punk have always appealed to me; they're the sounds I always fall back on. That said, though, I also love all types of other sounds, too. Hip hop, indie, jazz, industrial pop, electronic, etc.
Bands, though, yeah. Goddamn, I love bands! I also follow a ton of individual artists, but there's something about bands.
For my own enjoyment, and hopefully yours as well, some good bands (in no particular order):
Måneskin ("TIMEZONE" gives me major evanstan vibes btw 👀 / "SUPERMODEL" is kind of always stuck in my stuck in my head / "MAMMAMIA" is just 🤌🏻Damiano's moans🤌🏻 so you know it's good)
Fall Out Boy (I'm not even being funny when I say I can't narrow it down to a few songs to recommend. I know their entire discography by heart and have been obsessed since I discovered them. They hold a VERY special place in my heart. If I don't know what I want to listen to, I throw them on. If I need comfort, if I need to wallow in feelings, if I need to celebrate--anything.)
Sleep Token (This band FUCKS and turns on my writers brain in the best way (re: "Take Me Back To Eden") / be careful listening to "Blood Sport" because it's devastating / the music video for "Alkaline" will change you 😮‍💨 / and "Sugar" is way too good)
Royal Blood (I think "Lights Out" was the first song I heard from them, and it still holds up / "Blood Hands" is super good too / also "Honey Brains")
The Damned Things ("Keep Crawling" shouldn't be spicy, but it kinda is to me 😮‍💨 / "Something Good")
Halestorm (oh my god, all of their stuff! Lzzy's voice is unreal! "The Steeple" / "Black Vultuers")
Mother Mother (Again, a band that I know their entire discography by heart. A friend bought me one of their CDs before I knew them, and I've been obsessed since listening through the CD the first time. "Life" is comfort food for your ears, as is "It's Alright." Those songs make me cry or scream, depending on my mood, going into the listen)
Nine Inch Nails (NIN f u c k s . "Head Like A Hole" / "The Hand That Feeds")
Waterparks (I've been listening since Double Dare, their first album, and its been wild to watch them grow. I've gotten too many friends hooked on them too, lmao. "Turbulent" / "Dizzy" / "SELF-SABOTAGE")
YONAKA ("Guilty" makes me want to weep / "Punch Bag" is so good)
Muse ("We Are Fucking Fucked" has been my anthem since it dropped lol / "Won't Stand Down" puts me in my Bucky feelings as does "Psycho," "(Drill Sargeant)," and "Dead Inside")
(Thank you <3)

5 Songs
🎶✨When you get this, list 5 songs you actually listen to. Then, send this ask/tag to 10 of your favorite followers 🎶✨
I love talking music, so thanks for the tag @rebelrebelwrites !
I make playlists for EVERYTHING, so naturally I have one for every WIP and every potential WIP. Here are 5 songs that have been on heavy rotation lately that specifically relate to Haladriel/Saurondriel projects. This got really verbose... I just really love talking about music!
If you follow me on the bird app (if you don't you can @ cozy_ships) you might have seen me post some prompt fills related to a story I'm working on for Haladriel Week. It's a Prairie Gothic AU with a Tevildo as Black Phillip thing going on. Oh and there's a sexy farmhand Halbrand. The working title is Meet Me at the Edge, which is a lyric taken from "The Beast" by Delta Rae.
"Meet me at the edge, I ain't afraid, Lord I've already fallen, See the beast sitting on the ridge, No time to waste, Let him know that we're coming."
The Venus of Valinor is my main WIP right now. It's a multi-chap art heist AU with a lot of screwball comedy that was inspired by the film How to Steal a Million (1966) with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. It's hard to pick one song for it because there are so many that vibe with Hal and Gal's moods at various points in the story, but "Secret Heart" by Feist feels very on the nose overall. Both our leads have lots of secrets. And it's a song that I never tire of.
"This very secret, That you're trying to conceal, Is the very same one, That you're dying to reveal."
Mirah is one of my all-time favorite musicians, and "Gold Rush" is probably my favorite song by her (the name of my tumblr comes from this song). It also gives me major Haladriel vibes. It's on all my fic playlists.
"Oh love when I get lonesome, I'm gonna call you up into my world, When waters rise up I do my best, To keep my home floating upon your chest."
This is one of the most Haladriel coded songs in my rotation. Also one that's always been deeply personal to me, even pre-TROP. It figures prominently in the playlist for a Western AU I've been working on for a while (I've shared a few snippets of this one via prompt fills on the bird app as well). Not sure when this one will make an appearance, maybe Haladriel Week, but this one is a heavier lift for me, so no promises.
"I walk with others in me yearning to get out, Claw at my skin and gnash their teeth and shout, One of them wants only to be someone you'd admire, One would as soon just throw you on the fire."
The first thing I started writing was/is a Music AU. It’s heavily rooted in the late 1980s/early-mid-1990s punk & grunge scenes, as well as being loosely inspired by the film Whiplash (2014). The whole thing started from the idea of Finrod & Sauron’s epic song battle reframed as two kids from rival grunge bands, and Sauron somehow being responsible for Fin od’ing (think Finrod as Kurt Cobain). There’s also a whole thing with flashbacks where first Mairon, and then a young Galadriel were drumming students of the brilliant but unforgiving Aulë, and then in the future-present Sauron’s trying to live a quiet non-musical life but then music exec Galadriel “discovers” him and drags him kicking & screaming back into the life. I’ve got a little written, but have no idea if it’ll ever see the light of day, although I seem to have outlined it here so… 🤷🏻‍♀️
Siouxsie & the Banshees are a little earlier than the time period this fic is inspired by, but they’re influential to a lot of the other acts that are prominent in it, and I see them as being one of Galadriel’s faves in the story (also one of my faves). And the drumming on “Into the Light” is 🔥🔥🔥.
“Standing in the light, I never wanted to be right, Now I’m attracted by the light, And I’m blinded by the sight.”
Tagging (zero pressure, I'm sure many of you have already been tagged): @justatinycollector @ophidion @demonscantgothere @hazelmaines @jhalya

Also kind of off theme here but fav authors?

Learning to Love Heavy Metal (It's a process...): Part 3
Hello!
Tumblr media
We’re back here again today to discuss more about the history of heavy metal and all it has to offer. Yesterday, I discussed the three sub genres from the 1960s that went on to create hard rock, which is the predecessor of heavy metal. Moving forward, I want to look at more of the sub genres that were created by the early pioneers of heavy metal music. And there are, in fact, several.
Today, we are going to talk about two different offshoots of early rock music. From Garage rock, we will be looking at its daughter, Punk Rock, and how that would later feed into New Wave British Heavy Metal, which was also heavily influenced by heavy metal. It also feeds into original hardcore punk, but we won’t get into that today. Next, we will look at another offshoot from both garage rock and hard rock, Shock Rock, which does feed back into heavy metal later on but also helped lead to Glam Rock. Finally, we will discuss how all of these connect before moving onto the different subgenres of heavy metal in our next post.
Now that that is out of the way, let’s get on with it!
Tumblr media
Punk Rock
Developed between 1974 and 1976 in the US, UK, and Australia.
Known for creating fast, hard edged music, typically with short songs, stripped down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics.
Embraced DIY (do-it-yourslef) ethics and often produced their music on their own and distributed them through informal channels
Bands like the Clash, the Ramones, and the Sex Pistols had come to be viewed as the new vanguard of music by late 1976.
Became a major cultural phenomenon in the UK by the next year. It also spread around the world during this time.
Anarchy in the UK by The Sex Pistols
The accent took me out. At first, I wasn’t a fan of it but I think it makes the band sound especially distinct. I can also see how later 90s alternative bands will draw inspiration from music like this.
Something I usually immediately dislike about songs like this really is the degree of privilege I get from it. Similarly to the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” the lyrics don’t quite arouse a sense of rebellion in me because they don’t name anything to actually get rebellious about. It just sounds like a teenager who doesn’t want to follow the rules, and so it’s a bit harder to hear it as anything other than a bit immature. But almost every time I hear songs like this, I do end up really liking them and adding them to my favorites playlists.
The rebellion bit, of course, also makes sense given the political climate of the late 70s and what would later become the defining feature of Gen X, which was that they were rebels without a cause.
During the 1970s, the UK experienced a ton of political incompetence on the part of those in power. There was a financial crash, miners strikes, energy crises, inflation was over 30% and the country had to be bailed out by the IMF, or The International Monetary Fund (an international bank that basically bails countries in debt out of debt). It was such a frustrating time that the BBC even writes that, “emigrants actually outnumbered immigrants,” during this time. During 1976 when this song came out, there was also a massive heat wave going on in the UK.
Knowing this about the political climate, I think the lyrics are more likely meant to be a rallying cry than political commentary. Regardless, the song gets catchier and more interesting past the fourth time it’s played.  I think it's easy to get caught up in the actual issues of the world and write music about that (as one should), but it's also nice every now and then to remind others that it's cool to rebel a little for rebellions sake.
So, originally, I rated this a 4.8 out of 10. I was not a huge fan of it, but the more I listen to it, the more I really vibe with it. So, I guess I'm more of sex pistols fan than ever now. I'll give it a 4.9 out 10.
Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones
The opening alone is super fun in this song. It’s easily recognizable, and the lyrics of this song don’t make promises they can’t keep. In other words, they’re simple, fun to dance around to and scream at the top of your lungs, which I believe the instrumentation and “Eh! Oh!” of the song actually promises from the beginning. I also think this would make a great opening song for any concert to get people pumped up for the rest of the show.
5.5 out 10. It deserves a good score for being fun.
Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) by the Buzzcocks
This song was a breath of fresh air after listening to The Clash, The Sex Pistols and the Ramones. They’re all good, of course. But the use of this downbeat style and the edgy, thoughtful lyrics really do this song justice. It’s relatable as well, and I love a song that describes the general outline of my love life.
Even though the song consists of two lines, it’s powerful. According to music critic Mark Deming, "the lyrics owe less to adolescent self-pity than the more adult realization of how much being in love can hurt – and how little one can really do about it."
6.4 out of 10.
Telephone Numbers by U.K. Subs
Fast-paced, loud, emphasized use of cymbals. This song is a truely punk rock song, and I really like it. At only a minute and some change long, this song has an explosive start and an energizing tone to it. It makes you want to walk very fast down the street in a jean jacket with patches all over it, and I’m obsessed with that.
I like the use of every instrument in this song. It really reminds me of those long, drawn-out Psychedelic jam sessions but if they were condensed into one minute. So many instruments going at once, all doing something different but cohesive. It’s very easy to like.
6.4 out of 10. Not the most amazing, but definitely very good.
Last Caress by the Misfits
All I have to say about this song is that it’s horrible, and it makes me want to throw up. At first, I really liked the beat and pace of the song. But then, I read the lyrics. To call them crude would be an understatement, as they’re absolutely vile. They are so vile, in fact, that the upon reforming the band, original bassist and later vocalist Jerry Only didn’t want to perform the original lyrics, which reference brutal assaults on women and infanticide in the most grotesque, cavalier way. When the original vocalist came back, the band reverted back to playing the song with the original lyrics intact.
It is considered the band's most popular song, which is revolting to me, personally. The other day on TikTok, I saw a father making a battle vest for his daughter to this song and wanted to vomit. The vest was sweet, but the song is absolutely not.
I give it a 4 out of 10 for everything but the lyrics, which I give a 0 out of 10.

New Wave British Heavy Metal
Started in the late 70s, gained international attention by the early 80s.
Developed as a reaction to the decline of early heavy metal bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath.
Dominated by bands like Def Leppard and Iron Maiden
Toned down the earlier blues influences of these earlier song and added a more punk twist, increased the tempo, and made the songs “tougher.”
Characterized by fast, upbeat tempo songs, power chords, fast guitar solos, and melodic, soaring vocals. Themes usually drew upon mythology and fantasy fiction.
Rainbow Theme/Frozen Rainbow by Saxon
In the opening, you can really hear the beginnings of what would later become a very 80s era musical trend. The song is played like an epic film score, with a nearly one minute long intro filled with guitar riffs, and what sounds to me like a keyboard? I can’t quite tell.
This is the first time in this entire series that I’ve actually really vibed with the lyrics! They’re very fantastical, centered around the idea of finding a rainbow frozen in ice. It reminds me of Lord of the Rings, The Neverending Story, Stranger Things, and any 80s cartoon all in one.
I can’t believe I’m saying this already, but I’m giving this one an 8.4 out of 10! I’m very impressed with this one.
Angel Witch by Angel Witch
In this song, I really like the back-and-forth aggression and softness. The lyrics are incredibly soft and heartbreaking, while the instrumentation is very fast paced and aggressive. I actually think that outside of the lyrics, if Eddie Munson played anything besides Metallica in his legendary scene in Stranger Things Vol. 4, it would be this. It just has the same vibes to me. I especially like the vocals around the 2:30 mark.
Given the fact that I like everything and have no qualms about any aspect of the song, I’ll give this one a solid 6.4 out of 10.
Bringin’ On The Heartbreak by Def Leppard
I’m actually very in love with this. It’s such a beautiful rock ballad that perfectly encapsulates the heart numbing and lonely feeling of heartbreak. The lyrics, the execution, the guitar solos, the use of the cymbals throughout the song, everything about this song is *chefs kiss* and makes me want to cry.
It's also really funny because this song HIGHLY reminded me of this one from Moana.
8.4 out of 10.

Shock Rock
An umbrella term for artists who combine rock with elements of theatrical shock value.
Popular examples of this include Alice Cooper and Arthur Brown.
Would later inspire KISS by the mid-80s and Marilyn Manson in the 90s.
Involves expensive, upscale illusionary, graphic stunts such as feigning decapitation with the use of special effects
Cooper used a mixture of folk-blues and heavy metal
I’m Eighteen by Alice Cooper
A few things I like about this song: Cooper’s raspy vocals, the traditional but effective use of the drums (traditional for rock), and the emphasis using cymbals on each, “I’m eighteen.” So, this song is different from Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze in that it does actually use a backbeat. Personally, I think that the use of a backbeat in music, especially with a talented artist, is an important ingredient for proving that you can at the very least follow the popular commercial model (this also goes to show that Hendrix’s most hazy one further demonstrates his mastery of his craft, btw). The reason I say this is because, “I’m Eighteen,” actually was the first song that made Warner Bros. believe that Alice Cooper did, in fact, have what it took to at least produce a moderately successful commercial album.
I think something that I really enjoy as we move forward through the history of Rock and Metal is the way the vocals and lyrics change. Going back to the Kinks, or even earlier than them, you can really see how far this genre has come even in just about thirty years. Cooper really presents a traditional, pure rock sound that is easy to really enjoy simply because it’s definitive. It’s a definitive rock sound, which means that when you think of Alice Cooper, you immediately think of rock and roll. There’s simply no confusion here.
Onto the lyrics! I really particularly like how as we move through the decades, the lyrics become much more relatable. In fact, if I could swap “eighteen” out for 22, I absolutely would. It’d still fit the song perfectly because the lyrics are simply timeless and universal.
I’d give this song a solid 6.5 or even a 7 out of 10. It’s hard to decide, but I do really like this song and will definitely be putting it on my playlist.
Deuce by Kiss
In order to listen to this song, you’ll have to listen to Bitch by the Rolling Stones first to gauge whether or not you notice something interesting. According to bassist and vocalist, Gene Simmons, the song’s bassline was actually a backwards version of the bassline from Bitch. Now, as someone who does not play guitar or the bass, and will readily admit that up until this year, I actually thought they were the same instrument….it took me a minute to hear it.
However, I do have a semi-okay ear for music so as I was deciding that I couldn’t hear it while listening to Bitch, I realized that I could hear the similarity but I wasn’t sure. It took a minute, but I did find an isolated bass cover of Deuce and was able to learn how to properly identify the sound of the bass and then actually understand what I was hearing in Bitch.
I like the reverse(?) sampling in this song. It’s really cool, and I think it adds a neat spin on the original bassline. Furthermore, I like this song and it sounds really fun to listen to during a roadtrip to keep your energy up. I think that Kiss truly personifies the concept of shock metal, as their entire look is very shocking (especially back when they first came out). It’s all very exciting to watch, and leaves you with the feeling of, “Now that’s a show!”
I feel like their style in this song is clearly reminiscent of the Rolling Stones, not only because of the bass but also just the force behind the vocals. It reminds me a lot of Born to Be Wild, with it’s fast tempo and intense vocals. Another thing I like about this song is the sampling from multiple artists, such as The Raspberries’ “Go All The Way” in the intro riff and then, The Rolling Stones’ “Bitch.” I love when artists put spins on familiar music because it makes you feel like you already remember the new song from somewhere else. It’s very nostalgic, which might as well be like adding crack to your soda or something.
I’m giving it a 6.4 out of 10.
What’s coming up next
In the next blog post, we’ll discuss a few offshoots of Heavy Metal and their children, such as how Glam Metal led to Visual Kei, or how Progressive and Speed Metal led to Neo-Classical metal and Power Metal. After this point, the subgenres get a bit crazy and branch off quite a bit. But I’m excited to continue learning more about this genre until the website’s information ends, which is in the early 2000s.
See you next time!

~Introduction Post~
Hi, I'm cj
My pseudonym/pen name is Chris Shades (cringe I know but it made sense at the time)
I identify as genderfluid and use any pronouns (including it/its and neos, I'm chill with pretty much whatever, not a huge fan of she/her but don't mind it all that much either)
🩷🤍💜🖤💙
At the time of this post, I'm 18 and in my freshman year of college as an english major
I hope to be a writer, whether it be books, poetry, songs, shows- you name it, I just love to tell a good story
I'm queer (somewhere under the bi umbrella, maybe on the a-spec, and as mentioned above, genderfluid) and neurodivergent (AuDHD and possibly some other things I haven't quite figured out yet), so homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc. will not be tolerated here
Things I'll probably post about here:
*My writing (obviously)*
**Music**
Art of various forms
Personal stories/experiences/musings
Photography- if I ever get a good camera :')
Dreams/goals
Whatever my current hyperfixation/special interest is (usually fandom-related)
Mental health, psychology, neurodiversity, etc.

And I'd totally love to discuss/answer questions about any of those topics!
I'm also very interested in history, mythology, space, animals, theatre, and travel
*For the most part, I intend to use this blog to post fanfics, poetry, songs, and pieces of the multiple book series I have in the works
I look forward to sharing my stories with you all, but I do ask that you engage with my work in a respectful and considerate manner. If you don't like something, obviously you don't have to read it; constructive criticism is welcome and even encouraged but don't just hate-comment bc I do tend to take things very personally, and please don't ever repost without credit or use my work without permission as I do hope to eventually publish some of this stuff
(Also, I absolutely love talking about my OCs and the worlds they inhabit, so please please please don't hesitate to ask me about them)*
**I cannot for the life of me recognize or comprehend the genres and I may not be familiar with every single song or artist but I live and breathe music, I love to sing, I'm listening to music in my earbuds almost 24/7, I really want to learn an instrument (planning to start working on guitar this summer) and maybe even be in a band someday, and I'm always happy to give or receive song/artist recommendations or share specially curated playlists (including OC/series based playlists) if anyone's interested**
Fun facts:
I have a little sister and three dogs
I love the rain
I want to learn sign language
I was in a horrendous production of Alice in my senior year of high school (I played the caterpillar)
I absolutely cannot settle on an aesthetic; I love so many of them so much, so my style is kind of all over the place
I have an awful, stupid sense of humor (think dad jokes, corny puns, etc.)

I dunno if anyone noticed but I didn't do the update this Monday. This is mostly because I changed my work schedule and I don't actually work Mondays anymore, which is usually when I would do it. Instead I went to a very boring meeting and then went out to lunch with a couple people above me in the company.
I don't have any news to share on the album, mostly because I had other things cooking all week that weren't related. Instead, I asked around and had some friends and family give me questions to answer. So I compiled them all here.
Q: What made you want to start music?
This is the quintessential question for all musicians, I think, and the one that I get asked the most. In middle school, I discovered some early Groundbreaking music that really spoke to me. It was super inspiring for me because electronic music wasn't all that much on my radar at the time aside from some bands that incorporated elements of it, but at the time I had never been exposed to something to heavily focused on electronics that I enjoyed to the degree that I did. I started doing some research into it and downloaded my first DAW, and from there it kinda blossomed into a passion.
Q: What's your inspiration for your music?
This is one I get I feel maybe a little more often than other musicians might, and for pretty good reason. My music has evolved into something that is vastly different from what I usually listen to in my free time, which leads a lot of people I know personally to ask what inspires it. And the truth is, I dunno! There's not a whole lot that I can point to and be like "I wanted to do this but in my own version".
Q: What genre do you think your music falls under?
I wanna be cool and say something like "I don't really indentify with a genre" or say I'm 'post-genre', but in reality the most succinct way to describe it is as synthpop.
Q: Can you play any instruments?
Uhh kind of. I have a passing familiarity with keyboard/piano and have taken enough guitar lessons that I do have a fairly decent technical knowledge, but I'm not good enough at either to incorporate it into my music aside from very, very rarely.
Q: Is there a piece you're proudest of?
As far as covers go, there's a few I continue to be impressed with. One-Winged Angel, Hyrule Castle, and Guilty Hero stand out in my opinion. With my original music, there's usually one major standout on each album, and they're normally the singles- if a song is released as a single I'm probably really proud of it. But to name a few, Light It Up!, Luminary, Between Dreams, and DOA are probably some of my favorites. And, not to hype myself up too much, but I'm really excited for the new album. Conversely, there's some that I've grown to dislike and almost regret putting out in the first place. The biggest one that comes to mind is Neverending Memory.
Q: Do you have a process?
No. Not one that's set in stone, anyway. It varies a lot from song to song but most often starts with me writing a melody I like and then building on it from there. I've started with a baseline, a beat, or once the breakdown and then I reverse-engineered how I wanted the rest of the song to sound from there.
Q: Have you ever written vocal music?
Yes! I have been in two bands where I was the primary lyricist but neither produced enough music to release it. I do still occasionally write lyrics and have plans to begin voice training in the future but for the moment I am sticking with instrumental music.
Q: Do you listen to your own music?
In my humble opinion, every musician should listen to their own music. I largely believe the first and most important target audience for any creative should be themselves. You should make media that you enjoy, and would willingly consume, which is why I do, in fact, listen to my music from time to time.
Q: How do you occupy your non-musical free time?
I'm an avid weeb and have been gaming a decent amount lately. I just finished the Dead Space remake, and am reading a large amount of Junji Ito manga I recently acquired. Some other hobbies of mine include cooking.
Okay, that's all the questions I got. If you've got any you would like asked you can either reply to this post or submit them. News on the new single coming soon.

(I'm new to the whole ask thing- usually just read-) but; imagine for reader being a witch, douxie and her falling in love-?
You meet at Zoes music shop.
It's a chilly day so you dove inside a store for shelter or maybe just something to do. You're looking through some cheap records for fun with a scarf wrapped tight around your neck and he's never seen you before so he's curious. Not wanting to appear creepy he slowly approaches to see what your looking at.
"Oh do you like Papa Skull?" He questions.
You blink and pause your browsing. He smiles emabrassed looking away and you faintly blush. You nod no and shift so he can see the records your really looking at.
The good old classics hidden behind the discounted newer but last season albums.
"I like more classic records. Older bands." You explain. He notices your into rock and old pop. Behind the Papa Skull there are records like The Beatles, AC/DC, Prince and more vintage rock music. Douxies heart fluttered seeing you liked the same records as him.
You were wearing a satchel bag and looking at it he noticed a yellow submarine pin and some music patches. You also had college books and he wondered if you were a music major? Maybe music theory? That'd be awesome to make a new friend who likes music.
However the conversation seems to have run dry as you hum going back to the records you were looking at.
"Yellow Submarine is a personal favorite." He blurts out wanting to continue the conversation. Turning to look at him his face goes red as you hum at him softly.
"Yeah?" You question curiously. He nods hair bouncing up and down frantically and he blushes embarrassed. You smile seeming happy to talk to him. "I'm new in town. Just transferred to the local college here. I'm guessing your a local yourself. Could you show me around some time?" Holding out your phone Douxies face is a red mess. Smiling he nods putting in his number before you take your phone back waving over your shoulder as you leave.
Flinging your scarf over your neck as you leave he smiles before he begins muttering curses.
He realizes a second too late he forgot to ask for your name and your number so you'll have to text him first.
~~~
A week later and he gives up hop on finding you again. You hadn't texted him yet and he hadn't caught you in Zoes shop since that fateful encounter.
Deciding to cut his loses he heads to a local cafe to drown his woes in coffin and muffins. Walking through the door small bell going off he pauses.
Same bag. Same scarf. And similar clothes.
Getting closer it was indeed you ordering. You were polite tipping the server as you chewed on some black licorice, his favorite candy.
Laughing with the cashier you wave after paying and sit down.
He watches enraptured as you sit with and earbud in casually humming. You munch on your treat as you wait for your order to be called from your corner booth.
Douxie can't help but beam in glee at his luck. Quickly ordering he wonders if he should approach you or if he could maybe magic you into looking in his direction. Would that be too obvious? Clicking his tongue leaning against the baristas serving counter he smiles at you fondly thinking of what to do.
The answer comes when you see him and wave.
"It's Yellow Submarine." Remembering how he said that was his favorite song and how he never gave a name he laughs and comes over hoping the nickname was a good sign.
"The names Douxie love but I have to admit the nickname you picked is unique." Your laptops in front of you and Douxie can't help but peak at what your doing as he sits down next to you. You seemed to be writing some kind of paper.
So you were a college student. Wicked.
"Douxie?" You question saying his name as if tasting it. "I like that. I'm (Y/N)." Sticking out your hand you smile and he smiles back shaking it.
"What are you working on?" He questions.
"Oh just some academia stuff. I'm not really focusing on it just kinda day dreaming." You shrug and he smiles. The cafes lights were a low warm color. The light bounced off you and you looked beautiful. Your hair was practically glowing, your eyes were soft but had a hidden knowledge to them, and your smile. Your smile made Douxies heart flutter.
He chuckled at something you said and chuckled. Your tongue and lips were stained black from the licorice you ate making him happy for some reason.
You were just amazing and he barely knew you. He's about to ask why you hadn't texted when your orders are called.
"I'll get them." He offers and you nod watching him leave." He slides back into the seat next to you and soon you fall into a fun conversation work forgotten as you sip your drinks.
Realizing the time you give him a wave and say something about leaving. He nods and throwing away his cup he curses realizing he now had your name but not your number.
~~~
He doesn't see you again for awhile. Not in Zoes shop. Not at the cafe and sadly no where on campus.
He looks for you, in a respectful way of course but no matter what he does he's never able to run into you or find out what classes your taking.
It's late fall now and the leaves had all changed colors. Red, orange, and yellow blurred past him and crunched underneath him as he walked. The air felt crisp and as he took a deep breath in he could feel the seasons magic.
Walking through the leaves kicking them up Douxie feels defeated and like it's not meant to be.
He pauses crunching stopping. There you were. Sitting under a tree as leaves swirled around you, you were on a bench reading a book and listening to music. He's not sure if he should approach you but pauses when you look up and smile at him. Waving you pat the bench taking out your earbuds and he shyly comes forward.
"Hey Doux long time no see." Your smile brightens as he sits next to you and his heart flutters.
"Yeah I never see you at the cafe or at Zoes. We must have different schedules." He states. You shrug.
"Maybe. Maybe not. My life's pretty hectic." You hum and he nods in understanding.
Curious he glances at your book.
"Whacha reading?" He asks staring at thr cover. You fumble trying to hide it but he sees and is shocked.
"Oh it's nothing just-" You stumble and he smiles.
"I know there was something about you." He hums before smiling excited. He must have been attracted to you because he could sense your magic! "Your a mage." Pausing mouth open in shock you stare at him, and he notices the leaves shifting around you.
Chuckling he smiles holding up his hand. Snapping his fingers blue magic dances around them and you blink before staring in awe. "Don't worry love I'm one too." He says proudly and your face lights up.
Smiling as your own fingers spark with magic he reaches over for your free hand. Pausing you take it and he smiles feeling it fit perfectly against his.
"... (Y/N) would you maybe want to go on a date sometime?" Pecking his cheek Douxie touches his face starstruck as you smile getting up.
"Anytime." You hum before collecting your stuff getting up and walking away. Smiling too happy to complain about forgetting to get your number again he pauses as a ding rings through the air.
'Its a date submarine.' Blushing he holds his phone close.
It was a date.

Inspired from birth | Emptiness that you want to hug
Dialogue with the Bungei Prize-winning author.
Tumblr media
Tono Haruka, who received the Akutagawa Prize (1) less than a year after the 2019 Bungei Prize (2), and Sakurai Atsushi, the frontman of BUCK-TICK, who continues to play an active role in music culture after their major debut in 1987 and who this September celebrated 33 years from that day. As if real father and son, as artists of different genres - what do they feel and get from coexistence? That which was not told before; what I always wanted to hear. Here, for the first time, is presented a dialogue that pushes creative boundaries.
ᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠ Resonant feelings
Sakurai: I didn’t think the day would come when we could talk like that. I am very grateful.
Tono: Likewise, thank you very much.
— Sakurai-san, when you read Tono-san’s novel, what impression did it leave on you?
Sakurai: Cultivation shocked me. Not in the sense that I didn’t like it - it is rather akin to art that I like to touch. Regarding the Catastrophe — thanks to the Cultivation I am tempered enough for Tono-sensei’s books; and even though there are a lot of hardcore scenes of sex and violence, it didn't shock me too much. While I was reading, he pulled me in and repulsed me - this both disturbed and soothed. Although it is rather ridiculous to describe my impressions of the novel that way.
Tono: It's hard to share your impressions, isn’t it?
Sakurai: After reading Catastrophe, the emptiness of the protagonist seems to leave an aftertaste. She resonates with the emptiness in me, as if I want to embrace something passionately — but there is nothing to embrace. The feeling was like that. I was the kind of child who started to really get into the festival after it was over. Not having fun in the midst of the fun, but thinking about it when it’s already over. And as I grew up, nothing changed. First and foremost, I come to terms with everything, so [for me] the “emptiness” of Tono-sensei’s novel was refreshing.
Tono: Many people mention the word “emptiness” (решите, что вам больше подходит — “emptiness” или “void”). And the main idea of Catastrophe speaks of “the emptiness of a new era”.
Sakurai: Tono-sensei gives the impression of a composed and calm person, and this is imposing on the main character. It seemed to me that the hero contains not only emptiness, but also a certain composure.
Tono: It’s a bit surprising to hear that Sakurai-san has an emptiness. I have listened to BUCK-TICK since elementary school and I think that this band has more of a well-established dark worldview rather than emptiness. Their world is original, which completely sets them apart from other bands, don’t you think?
Sakurai: Been listening since then, really? Thanks. I am very touched.
Tono: My work couldn’t be called bright either, so maybe [their music] subconsciously influenced me.
Sakurai: Dilettante question, but — The Cultivation and Catastrophe are not about personal experiences, they are a product of the imagination, right?
Tono: Yes, that’s right. I was not describing my own experience, but I designed and took everything from imagination. It is much more interesting to write, thinking about what you yourself have not experienced or what you don’t know about, because you can discover something new for yourself.
Tumblr media
Sakurai: That is, before you start working, there is no fully-formed concept, it is formed step by step in the process of writing?
Tono: I sketch out something like a rough draft, but when I start writing, I move away from it, and the result is something completely different. It seems that I am writing it myself, and then suddenly something unexpected appears [in the text], which confuses and complicates everything, but this only makes it more interesting.
Sakurai: Something unexpected — for example?
Tono: In Catastrophe, there is a girl named Irori who gets scared at one point. Before starting the work, I thought about including a child somewhere. But when I was already writing, I surprised myself when, at an unexpected moment, she hid under the bed and watched the hero.
Sakurai: Yes, it happens. Could it be that the story itself is rejecting [the planned] in the process of writing? There are deviations from the original design, and in the end it turns out completely different. These changes are fun, it’s great.
ᅠ Life and art
Sakurai: Although not a first-person novel, do you have the same sudden madness and cruelty as the protagonist, Tono-sensei?
Tono: I think I’m a very decent person. I don’t fight people, I don’t stay up late. In that sense, the main character and I are completely different.
Sakurai: So this madness is purely imaginary?
Tono: It doesn’t really happen. This was not conceived in the characters, and yet from time to time they did things that should not have been done, or found themselves involved in unexpected events due to some minor misunderstandings. So I could, in the heat of the moment, do something rash. I still have some kind of crazy thing in me, and this could have affected the characters.
Sakurai: As I read it, it worried me if you were experiencing what you described, or if you are going to experience it in the near future. It was constantly spinning in my head. Perhaps it bothered [me] from a different point of view, not as a reader.
Tono: There is almost nothing from my life or personal experience in this work. The location of the Catastrophe is Keio University (3), and I also studied there. Is that the issue? I have not participated in such events and do not plan to. *laugh*
Sakurai: Thank goodness. *laugh*
Tono: It’s hard to make a story interesting just by describing how the characters sleep and go about their day, so you have to weave in some twists and turns.
Sakurai: There’s a font of worries in there. Very stimulating. Because of this, when I was already finishing it, it felt a little sad, because I wanted to read on, but it seemed that the end was close.
Tono: Of course, as the saying goes, “This is where everything ends”.
Sakurai: How would you, Tono-sensei, suggest to read [this book]?
Tono: How should I put it... I don’t want to impose on readers [thoughts] like “I wrote with this intent” or “This book needs to be read this way and that way”. I do not want to limit the potential interpretations. I would be happier if they read it on their own, calling it boring if it was boring, or interesting if it was interesting.
Sakurai: It's very courageous.
Tono: If I was debuting as a teenager, it might have been different. But since it happened when I was already 28 years old, I do not take readers’ reactions to heart and am not afraid of it.
Sakurai: II only recently came to this. Probably in my fifties, somewhere around the last three released albums. In my youth, I was still that little tyrant, digging in my heels, so that everything was my way. Now it all seems somewhat extreme. Now I think: “Listen as you like”.
Tono: Do you look up the listeners’ impressions?
Sakurai: I don’t want to worry about [reviews on] social media. Not in the sense of “I don't care,” but in the sense of “I don’t want to worry”. So personally, I am not involved in checking such things.
Tono: Well, I’m checking it. I’m trying to figure out, in general, how people read it. It doesn’t affect how I write, though.
Sakurai: Oh, just to confirm [your thoughts], correct? A sensible approach. Of course, in my case, there should be no paranoia at all. You start taking everything to heart and fears will arise, so it’s better not to get carried away.
Tono: Companies conduct surveys of who use their services, don’t they? It’s kind of like that. If all the experiences are completely different from my expectations, it is worth considering how I write.
Sakurai: A top-notch entrepreneur.
Tono: No, I’m a newbie. *laughter* Not a year has passed since my debut...
Sakurai: A very courageous newbie, from where I am looking.
[At our next meeting, I will already be
the winner of the Akutagawa Prize]
Sakurai: Last December he attended the BUCK-TICK concert in Yoyogi. Even before the Catastrophe was published in the magazine. After the performance, we were able to talk a little in the dressing room, and when he was just about to leave, Tono-sensei said, “By our next meeting, I will win the Akutagawa Prize”.
Tono: Ah, yes, he did. It was probably terribly immodest to say that. But if before you roll the dice you declare that it will come up six, and then it really comes up six, it seems that something amazing just happened, right? I wonder if they will ever say: “Just like he said”?
Sakurai: And the promise was fulfilled. It couldn’t be cooler. He was wearing a mask, so it was difficult for me to see his expression, but I saw that dazzling confidence.
Tumblr media
Tono: I often say these things even if I haven’t finished my work yet.
Sakurai: It was the last push, right? Thank you for coming to the concert then.
Tono: How could I not? And the next concert will be the day after tomorrow (September 21*)? I bought a ticket.
Sakurai: Is that true? Wow, I am suddenly nervous.
Tono: Is this the first time you broadcast a concert online without an audience?
Sakurai: We performed without an audience at WOWOW once before, and I had no idea how much tension to expect. And a few days ago we had a film-concert shoot — in a large hall, without an audience. Of course, there was no applause or shouts of joy. After each song there is a complete silence.
Tono: Not very encouraging, right?
Sakurai: Right now I'm trying to get inspired by myself. Even now, during the coronavirus epidemic, there are many things you can get latch on to. I realized that even these days I can be on the same wavelength with the energy of my fans. It was not an ordinary feeling. You also can’t do autograph sessions and meetings with readers right now, correct?
Tono: Yes, there are no autograph sessions yet, and the conversations are taking place online. The Akutagawa and Naoki Awards (4) usually serve a lot of food, but this year there was no such thing, and the number of guests was limited.
Sakurai: Very sorry. Still, it must have been an amazing experience.
Tono: The day after tomorrow the sales of the new album “ABRACADABRA” will start, right? What does it look like finished?
Sakurai: After Tono-sensei debuted as a writer, we exchanged messages with him, and it gave me courage. Or if not courage, then determination to write and juggle words. I think it showed itself in the album. Perhaps I’ve managed to open - more precisely, to throw open the door to a vocabulary that I had not used before.
Tono: It seems to me as well, that you succeeded.
Sakurai: Moreover, now I have the strength to use those words.
Tono: Any desire to write a novel?
Sakurai: No way.
Tono: I would read it even if it was very short.
Sakurai: I think it would take an incredible effort from me.
Tono: You were writing song lyrics originally, correct?
Sakurai: Yes, I’m writing. Music has always been on my mind. Although in elementary school I was often praised for [written] reviews of what I have read.
Tono: It was exactly the opposite for me. I was completely unable to describe these impressions. I couldn’t even set it up.
Tumblr media
Sakurai: This is amazing.
Tono: I couldn't understand what kind of impressions they were talking about. No matter what I read, everything seemed to me “Well, okay”, but you can’t call that an impression.
Sakurai: In some interview it was mentioned that you were a member of a band when you were at university.
Tono: It was a copy-band, there isn't much to talk about. But Cultivation has a character who plays drums in a band, so that experience influenced the novel.
Sakurai: I’m even a little happy.
Tono: I did a lot of things, but for the most part I gave it all up quickly, so writing is my longest-running occupation at the moment.
Sakurai: Since when have you been writing?
Tono: I started somewhere after I turned twenty, so it’s about seven or eight years old by now. I thought that being on the other side [of the book] was a completely different matter. Like, shouldn’t I become a creator myself and start giving shape to things? Perhaps BUCK-TICK influenced this in some way from the very beginning.
Sakurai: And then a novel ended up being written.
Tono: Yes.
— Did Sakurai-san know that Tono-san was writing a novel?
Tono: The first time I told him about it was when I won the 2019 Bungei Prize for my debut.
Sakurai: I’ve heard something [about this] since he graduated from university, but was amazed when he suddenly made his debut as a writer. However, I was looking forward to [the release of the book]. What kind of work will it be, could not wait to read it — something like that. And I was amazed a second time when Cultivation came out. How did you feel after finishing work on this novel?
Tono: I gained confidence and I decided that I could make it to the final round. I didn’t know, of course, how it would go in the future, if I would end up regretting it.
Sakurai: And he wrote to me about it.
Tono: Yes, that happened. I wrote “I got to the finals”. It was still cooler to report this after receiving the award.
Sakurai: And the coolness of the statement that “next time I meet I will be the winner of the Akutagawa Prize” then went off the charts.
Tono: This is just the beginning.
Different hobbies, same tastes
— This year BUCK-TICK celebrated 33 years from the date of their debut — without breaking up or changing membership of the group. What is the secret of such longevity?
Sakurai: Patience. Group work requires patience. The others and I, by the way, we often say this. But it seems to me that writers are have it more difficult in terms of moral, because they work alone. You have to evaluate yourself. When you are in a group, there is always someone who will express their opinion.
Tono: Perhaps so.
Sakurai: The writers of the old days appear to us to be some kind of alcoholics and drug addicts, down on their luck, with a ruined life — but now people are different.
Tono: In our era, being a writer, you can support yourself with more than just creativity, so in this sense the profession is more reliable than before. And I don’t drink much at all. And you, Sakurai-san, drink a lot, right?
Sakurai: Yes. I am one of those who seek salvation in alcohol. *laughter*
Tono: By the way, do you still read lots of novels?
Sakurai: Recently I reread Mishima Yukio again (5). And also [books] by Numata Mahokaru-san (6) and Taguchi Randi-san (7).
Tono: You’ve loved Mishima Yukio for the longest time, right?
Sakurai: Yes, quite true. It's not just about books — I’ve watched YouTube videos about Mishima Yukio and Kawabata Yasunari (8), and they really are very interesting people.
Tono: I haven’t read Yukio Mishima at all. My preferences in literature are very different.
Sakurai: What is your favorite writer, Tono-sensei?
Tono: When I was just starting to think about the novel, I had no idea how to write, and started by imitating the prose of Natsume Soseki (9). Have you read it?
Sakurai: I love his Heart very much. But now you probably don’t have time to read.
Tono: Right. But they often say that you need to read more, so I think about it anyway. Sakurai-san, do you study other artists’ music?
Sakurai: I’m a slob, so I’m not really up to date, so to speak. But good things still find their way to me. I can catch it on the radio when I’m driving, or hear it somewhere by accident. The youth of today like Kaze-san Fujii (10), don’t they?
Tumblr media
Tono: Wow. A bit surprising.
Sakurai: You probably like something harsher, right?
Tono: I love King Gnu (11). Mentioned this in an interview for the monthly Bungei Shunju (12). Many were surprised that the music favored by young people and the traditional image of the Akutagawa Prize are not related.
Sakurai: King Gnu is great. I bought their CD as well. Just like that, I found out about King Gnu when I accidentally heard them. They have such an interesting lead singer.
Tono: Iguchi Satoru-san is interesting, yes. On Twitter, I would send links to [my] videos to anyone, even to the Pope himself. And when I appeared at Music Station, I stunned everyone with my descent down the stairs.
Sakurai: Showed up wearing sandals, yeah. *laughter* Do you watch a lot of TV?
Tono: From time to time. I saw your collab with Shiina Ringo-san at Music Station. “Elopers” is a great song, very powerful.
Sakurai: Really? I am very happy.
You can't lie to yourself
Sakurai: Has the third work been written yet?
Tono: Yes. The events transpire in an institution that raises people with supernatural abilities. The main character attents it along with the rest, tries to awaken superpowers in himself, but since he does not possess them, he gets no progress. This is the story I am writing. It will differ from the two previous works in meaning.
Sakurai: Is there a deadline?
Tono: I want to submit it to the editors by early next year. You, Sakurai-san, also have deadlines, right?
Sakurai: I have deadlines, of course. Release and tour dates might be pre-determined and songs should be worked on accordingly. And I will stubbornly work on them until they tell me: “That’s it, you can't put things off any longer”. However, I still try to keep within the appointed time.
Tono: Are there any serious challenges when you work?
Sakurai: It's very difficult to work when I’m drained. If you try to force something out of yourself, you get only lies, and then it turns out that you are insincere with yourself and with others. You can’t lie to yourself. But with a bit of personal experience and imagination, on the other hand, you can make very good progress.
Tono: You have to rewrite everything a lot, right?
Sakurai: Depends on the song. Sometimes I have to rewrite over and over again, and sometimes I write the first word that comes to my mind and everything is ready. Most often, some kind of shape may emerge first. How is it with you, Tono-sensei?
Tono: More often than not, I have one scene at the beginning, and I start writing based on it. At that time, I do not yet know how the story will develop, I have only scattered fragments, and as they are combined and edited, I am finally getting the feeling that the world of of this work is acquiring its finished form. By the way, I had some trouble coming up with a name for Cultivation, and I was given one piece of advice, do you recall?
Sakurai: Ah, yes, but in my opinion, it was not very good...
Tono: When I asked “How do you come up with names?”, You replied, “It should express the essence, but at the same time cover the whole thing. That word would fit the best”.
Sakurai: Wow, I put it remarkably well. And [I said that] to the future Akutagawa Prize winner, such arrogance. *laughter*
Tono: Even though I didn’t really understand how to apply this advice in practice, I still relied on it.
Sakurai: Cool title, isn’t it? Even though I said there were some disturbing moments when I was reading Cultivation for the first time, I think it read very cleanly. For example: “To my delight, I managed to look great. <…> I just wanted to be beautiful” — here, as it seemed to me, the words are very good - fresh and clear, without unnecessary embellishments.

Hey gorgeous!
❤: First of all, you sound so smart. You talked about like 4 different things in regards to your schooling and each one sounded impressive. You seem like you're very open to learning which is always a good thing. I love your movie taste; you seem like the perfect person to marathon LOTR with. And honestly it sounds like there's nothing you're not good at?? Talk about talented. Also I wish I worked at a bookstore. You're out here living the dream. Not to mention, you've broken in Doc Martens which is truly the most impressive part of all of this.
Ship: Jake
Tumblr media
Because: You and Jake would instantly bond over rock music, obviously. But you also have so many other interests that scream Jake in my opinion. You guys would play the guitar together, you'd read together, you'd have crazy loud nights with his band mates and then go home and recharge together. I can see him popping into the bookstore you work at to surprise you while he's home for the holidays, too, which would probably be the best surprise ever.
Scenario:
Christmas in your town was usually one of your favorite times of the year
The town was strung up with lights and wreaths and garland; it looked like something out of a Hallmark movie
The bookstore you worked at over the holiday season was especially festive this time of year, decorations gracing practically every open surface
Normally as you bustled about the store, you'd be filled with excitement about Christmas but this year, all you could think about was the boy that was with his family in Michigan and once again too far away from you
It felt like Jake had just gotten done touring when he jetted back home to his family and of course, you understood. You wanted him to be there with them. But you hadn't seen him in almost two months and it was starting to get to you
He did promise he would come see you after the holidays so you were trying to keep your mind focused on that as you organized the books on the shelf in front of you
The day eased on slowly despite how busy the store was throughout the morning and by late afternoon when the sun was already casting golden shadows through the store windows, there was a lull in customers
You meandered around the tight aisles of books, looking for covers to tidy to busy your hands
You heard the bell of the front door as it swung open and the footsteps of a customer as they entered but continued what you were doing when you heard your coworker greet them
Noticing a book out of place, you had just plucked it from the shelf when you heard the voice of the customer speaking to the coworker that had greeted them muffled from somewhere within the store
It couldn't be him
It sure sounded like him, though
You wove through the aisles, trying to locate where the talking was coming from when suddenly it grew quiet
You stood there amongst the books for a moment, silently wondering if you were going crazy or not, when a voice came from directly behind you
"Excuse me, miss, but I believe the other clerk said you'd be able to help me find a certain book?"
You spun around fast. It was Jake
The book in your hand dropped to the ground as you practically jumped into his arms and threw your own around his neck, an excited squeal escaping your lips
You felt a laugh resonate through him as he placed your feet back on the floor
He explained that he couldn't wait any longer to see you so he planned to spend Christmas with you and your family and then whisk you away to Christmas with his family
And truly you couldn't be more delighted to accompany him
I'm so happy you like our ships! Thank you for the request!

Gavin's 'Falling Slowly' and Film 'Once'- Analysis
Since the beginning, I’ve wanted to do an analysis on the song Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, but since it was only mentioned twice (in Mark Date and Gavin’s Music and the Past Call), I thought it was going to be left at that. But because of the mention again in @cheri-translates' post, perhaps... there could be more to it. Because this song was made for the film Once, I had actually watched it earlier this year. I wasn’t going to post this analysis originally, but the trailer literally made me cry. After watching it with the knowledge from my first viewing, the trailer had a bigger impact on me that I didn’t expect. This allowed me to push on. Rewatching the film for this helped me realise some parallels between the film and Gavin’s history with MC, along with its song Falling Slowly. For me, the film was so heartfelt, vulnerable, honest and real. Just like the side that Gavin shows MC. It also had super hilarious moments that made me laugh so much while crying over the sad bits. Highly recommend this movie (if you don’t mind some occasional cursing!) Now I can say I’ve watched Once twice.
Below contains spoilers for Gavin's CN content (referring to Cheri's translations) and on the film.
“Your performance… was a miracle to me.” -Gavin
youtube
Once is a 2007 Irish romantic drama about two struggling artists in Dublin, Ireland. The film was turned into a musical and won various awards, with Falling Slowly winning at the Critics’ Choice Awards and the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song. This was on top of receiving a Grammy nomination. Once only had a budget of only $150,000 USD.
In an Interview with Glen Hansard (male lead), he stated that during the scene of Falling Slowly in the music store, director John Carney wanted this shot to be the centrepiece- just two musicians connecting through music. This scene where the actors first got together to perform and sing in harmony allowed the crew to maintain the perseverance needed to finish the film despite various major setbacks. (People kept buying the same piano in the music store featured because of this film LOL)
“The closest a non-musician will ever get to feeling what it feels like to write the song… or to discover… it was the most moving scenes of the film.” -The Interviewer
The first impression some viewers may have upon watching would be criticising the shakiness of the handheld cameras. However, the actual intention (from the ex-film student perspective that I had) was to give it a sense of realism. This film aims to depict more of real-life from the perspective of the main characters. Even the characters' names weren't disclosed as they were literally 'unknown artists' in everyday life. It was ultimately based on Carney’s own personal experience, while Hansard, wrote the music for the film.
“The movie is sad, funny, real, everything that life is and it gives you hope. It's about a moment that happens in life that may not come by again or may not last forever, but it just might have the greatest impact on you. I know I'll be watching "Once" again.” -A fellow Once viewer.
We are introduced to the male lead (Guy), playing the guitar and wanting to make it big with his music, who also fixes vacuums with his father for a living. He meets the female lead (Girl) and she bugs him into fixing her vacuum. In the beginning, he’s cold and doesn’t want to associate with her (especially after when she gives him 10 cents for his busking).
Look how grateful he looks-
Tumblr media
Even when Gavin and MC met again after their separation, Gavin puts up a fragile guard in front of MC while protecting her from a distance, like in high school. And just like how Joe Zieja stated in his MLQC interview-
“Gavin is a really interesting character, especially when we first started out before he and the producer really had a relationship… Gavin’s very cold. He’s very business-like, he just wants to get stuff done. But it’s really neat to see Gavin’s shell melt over time as he develops a relationship with the producer.”
In the film, Guy finds out that Girl can play the piano, who learned it from her father before he passed. Turns out, Guy is heartbroken from his ex (who’s currently in London) who cheated on him. Girl tries to convince him to get her back with his songs.
Similarly, Gavin discovers MC’s music during his fall shown Campus Date, in the moments where he received his Evol. Gavin devotes his life to protect her.
(I also did a timeline of MC and Gavin’s high school history together here that also references these parts.)
*Casually dragging vacuum*
Tumblr media
Together, they go to a music store and she plays Mendelssohn for him. Then finally, at 15:42 of the film, they start to play Falling Slowly.
(So good! So good!! When they start harmonising!!! No fancy editing or cuts- it’s just two artists and pure music.)
Tumblr media
Through music, they connect with each other’s souls. Just like how MC saves Gavin with her music that fateful day. And soon enough, Gavin comes across MC playing another song in the music room.
That song was Falling Slowly. He doesn’t know the name of the song though, only remembering the melody. Later, he learns how to play the guitar because he liked it and thought that perhaps he could perform it to his special someone one day. Such moments had inspired Gavin to write and make his own songs then record them onto his CDs so that maybe one day she could listen to them.
A thought I had was that did Gavin hear the piano and decide to make a guitar version, only to figure out that he was the missing piece?
Even the music store owner was very impressed-
Tumblr media
Just like how Gavin slowly begins to soften up to MC, in the film, the instrumental of Falling Slowly plays when Guy and Girl start to bond. Guy tries to talk to her more but she states that she “has responsibilities”. It’s revealed that she has a daughter at home and a husband still in the Czech Republic. Even so, together, they write and record songs for his journey to London- back to his ex and to pursue his dreams as a musician.
Tumblr media
Later, they go out for a spin on his father’s motorbike- he even prepared another helmet for her (SPARKY 2.0??). He asks her to teach him how to say “how much do you love him?” in Czech when they talk about her husband upon finding out that she’s married. She replies with, “it is you I love” in Czech. But he has no idea what she said. (*Grips heart*)
He wants her to go to London with him, start a band, and sell out shows. But she can’t. The song they recorded together “When your mind’s made up” (I have this song on repeat) plays in the car as they drive to the beach before he leaves for London the next morning.
So, if you want something And you call, call Then I'll come running To fight and I'll be at your door When there's nothing worth running for
The music producer is clearly so impressed-
Tumblr media
Together, they schedule a time to meet up just before he leaves for the airport. Guy waited all night till morning for her.
But she still doesn’t come. And that was the last time he ever saw her. Just like how MC wasn't able to see Gavin who waited the whole day before he left. This was shown in Old Days Date that I did a heart-gripping analysis on here.
Tumblr media
Guy’s father had said, “make your Ma proud.” (*Cries upon remembering Gavin’s loving mother*)
In the end, still unable to reach her, Guy gifts Girl a piano. In the beginning, they had a conversation where they spoke about pianos being too expensive, hence why she kept going to the music store in order to be able to play. Even though they are both short on money, he still manages to buy her a piano- the same one they played Falling Slowly together.
And while the film comes to an end, Falling Slowly plays in the background while Guy is off to the airport.
*Dramatic power-walking*
Tumblr media
This was a heartbreaking ending for the viewers because not only that they didn’t end up together, they weren’t able to see each other before he left. And it wasn’t disclosed why she couldn’t make it.
Nothing too fancy happens because again, this was to show a slice of real life, and this proves it to be more tragic and beautiful. It can’t really be described unless it’s experienced. And I had the chance of viewing it not once, but twice.
This film (and song) is important for Gavin and MC because, despite their complicated history of misunderstandings, he always wants to put their relationship first and make the most out of what they have now together. Girl had helped Guy achieve his record deal and pursue his dreams. She had done her part on his journey to becoming an artist and both had to part ways. Without her, he wouldn’t have been able to record his songs and leave. Likewise, without MC, Gavin wouldn’t be the man he is today (hence, Winter World). Gavin is very vocal about this as well.
Gavin lowers his head, and the light follows his movement, descending onto the scrapbook, illuminating every word he writes- “I’m very happy to have met you in the past.” -CN Mark Date
“It doesn’t matter what happened in the past. What matters is every moment I spend with you now.” -Sugar Figurine Phone Call
“Seeing you again is the best present I could hope for.” -The Best Gift Phone Call
"Even though I'm curious about the future as well... I care more about the present. For me, it's good enough to seize the day. As long as you're here. The next second will be everything I need. Protecting what I have now, is the best plan for the future." -School Legend ASMR
With Falling Slowly, it’s quite a straightforward, romantic song. Originally in the film, Guy wrote it about his ex-girlfriend so it does has some sad lyrics. MC didn't know how Gavin knew about it.
Teacher Zheng: Just now, MC mentioned that you play the guitar and bass incredibly. Could you let me hear it? It’d be best if the two of you could play together. I haven’t heard my Orchestra Leader play the piano in a very long time.
To be honest, this is not a “request” at all. If Teacher Zheng wants to hear it, I’ll definitely be willing to play for her. But Gavin…
I cast Gavin a probing glance, wondering if there’s a need to persuade him. To my surprise, he nods.
Gavin: I could, but I’m really not as skilled as she says.
Teacher Zheng: Haha that’s all right. I just want you to use your heart when performing. What’s important isn’t how good it sounds, but the heart.
Gavin: Could I borrow the guitar over there?
Teacher Zheng: Of course.
Basically shown in Mark Date, Gavin’s been preparing for this moment all this time. He already knows what song to play. And what’s so amazing is that the first instrument we hear is the guitar which leads the piano. Therefore, once Gavin plays his piece, MC would know what song it is and then join in with her piano. AND THEY WOULD SING TOGETHER.
Maybe it’s just my misperception, or the sunlight just happened to fall onto his eyes, but I keep feeling as though his eyes are even brighter than usual. It’s as though they are flashing with light.
This is a slightly melancholic song, but the moving light and wind seem to make it refreshing and clear.
🎶 Lyrics 🎶
It's a slower song to help listeners slowly take in the emotions, lyrics and main dueting instruments of piano and guitar with the occasional violin in the back. It's so simple, and yet so powerful.
The guitar has its solos and the piano appears more prominent in the chorus. In the beginning, it's just the guitar, with the piano joining in after.
[GUY & GIRL] I don't know you but I want you All the more for that Words fall through me and always fool me And I can't react And games that never amount To more than they're meant Will play themselves out
Gavin never got the chance to be close to MC in high school, so he showed his affection through other methods. He walked 10 metres behind her after school and was her silent guardian against those who had negative intentions towards her. In the library, he had tried to introduce himself to her, but she had already dashed off.
Before waiting for him to say the introduction he had rehearsed countless times in his heart, the girl had already uttered a “thank you” and hurriedly fled. -CN Tilted Time Rumours and Secrets
Gavin couldn't help but develop this softer side for her and didn’t know how to control it or express it other than doing things such as leaving strawberry milk on the piano and learning guitar in hopes of playing it for her one day.
Those "games" he's referring to were those things they did, such as MC smiling at him when crossing each others' paths in the hallways, and Gavin buying her hot drinks and only looking at her among the snowball fight chaos at school in the Winter. Gavin has no power over how everything will turn out, nor does he try to have complete control over it either.
"... I believe that some things are destined. Like..." -Gacha and Destiny Phone Call
[GUY & GIRL] Take this sinking boat and point it home We've still got time
This "sinking boat" of the relationship is what they're both trying to save. For Gavin, this could be suggested to be about himself.
In a split second, the noise ceases abruptly. After a moment of silence, whispers surface in the crowd. Vaguely, I can catch a few phrases.
“Bad.” “Fighting.” “Misfit.” -CN Mark Date
Gavin had a tough time in high school being the outcast, but MC kept him going, fighting in the name of justice. And had quite literally saved his life. She was his lighthouse when he was battling the rough waters back home. And MC- she was also his home.
“As he clenched his fists, a power deep down within awakened. It was a rapture of rebirth. A declaration of the end of darkness and the advent of the light.” -Campus Date
[GUY & GIRL] Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice You've made it now
Gavin wants her to realise his feelings, be around and talk to him more- and say "yes". But even so, he still gives her a choice not to, and would have to live with that. Gavin thought she already had when he departed and spent years thinking that her absence showed all of what had to be said.
[GUY & GIRL] Falling slowly, eyes that know me And I can't go back
Gavin's falling slowly for MC (compared to when he fell really fast before MC saved him LOL). Once he starts, he can and would never go back. He hopes that MC would see him the way he truly is.
MC: “I have one more thing to tell you. MC is a bit slow. She is not as good as you think, and will also be blinded by rumours…”
Gavin: “She’s a very nice person. What she thinks of me has nothing to do with anyone else." -Old Days Date
[GUY & GIRL] Moods that take me and erase me And I'm painted black
Gavin can't handle his feelings. (*Cries*)
After being in a daze in the piano room, he’d be in a daze in the library, continuously staring at the empty seat where MC used to sit, and I have no idea what he’s thinking about.
But I really didn't expect a person who sleeps in class to be in a daze in the library for an entire afternoon... Did Bro Gavin and MC have a fight recently? -CN Minor's Memos
[GUY] You have suffered enough And warred with yourself It's time that you won
He states that he understands that the girl had it rough, but if she was to be with him, she wouldn't get hurt. Gavin wants to be the one for her.
"MC, I want to make you happy forever. If... I hope that person is me." -First Year In-Game Birthday Visit
[GUY & GIRL] Take this sinking boat and point it home We've still got time Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice You've made it now
[GUY & GIRL] Falling slowly, sing your melody I'll sing it loud
Gavin recognises MC's "melody", and urges her to sing (her presence) and Gavin will listen and follow, singing his one, too. Together they will harmonise.
[GUY] Take it all Oh, I played the cards too late Now it's gone
The song finally ends with both the guitar and piano, whereas at the beginning it was just the guitar.
This part is the most powerful and heartbreaking. Gavin regretted not giving the farewell letter to MC directly- from "playing the cards too late", then suffers the loss of her, her presence, and her melody.
But fortunately, in the end, Gavin successfully returned home- to MC.

"Want to play for a while tonight? I haven’t heard you playing the piano in a long time too.
If possible, I’d like to make a song request.
How about “Falling Slowly”?
We could sit by the window and play it together again." -CN Gavin’s Weekly Text - Piano Concert

Somewhere, Gavin is happily playing Falling Slowly with MC.

First of all I'd like to start by saying sorry if my grammar or spelling goes to s*** . It probably means my hands were shaking from all the tears rn . I thought I would ask you this before I forgot .... I'm not the best at asking things but how come we can be so passionate to bands or people we have never met (mostly MFS) can you try to give me a little bit of an explanation please
Hello 😊
Sorry for taking so long to reply. I was on holiday and had been taking a break from Tumblr that whole time. Sorry again.
Hmm …. I would say that us passionately liking people beyond our reach such as celebrities, is all down to science. It’s human psychology.
1. You program your own brain
Don’t quote me on this but I read somewhere that if a person occupies 45% of your mind/time per day, you will develop a tendency to fall in love with that person 😍. Something like that 😁. You’ll need to read proper psychology books to understand this though. So, imagine the effect it has on our brains when we listen to a band everyday and watch their MVs or looking at their photos on a daily basis 🤔.
I don’t have band photos as my phone wallpaper or lock screen BUT I am sure the majority of my readers do. With our phones being the centre of our daily lives nowadays, imagine how many times that you look at those images of those band members every day!
2. Sensory pleasure
Humans are naturally stimulated by what is deemed pleasing by our senses. What we see, hear, touch, taste. With musicians, we get turned on by their music and when they also have the looks that we aesthetically find pleasing, the attraction gets doubled. I won’t underestimate the power of a pretty face or a hot body on our attraction towards a person (*1). Then when these musicians also do or say things we are pleased by, that attraction is magnetized even stronger (*2).
*1. I fell head over heel over Teruki Nishizawa after going to my 1st MFS concert. It wasn’t even my intention to be near him BUT he was 90% of my view from my standing position that night. He was all I thought about 24/7 for the following 2 weeks or maybe a month. Amazing considering he was the MFS member who excited me the least in their 1.0 phase. Also, the fact that he had grown out of his rather annoying childish phase and blossomed into a man now is a big plus point to me 😊.

*2. SWANKY DANK’s Matsuo brothers are good-looking men. That’s an established fact for years but YUICHI Matsuo single-handedly stole my heart away from his brother KOJI simply for being super nice to me the night I went to SWANKY DANK’s show on my birthday in 2016. To these days, YUICHI remains the one I message to the most online and the one I think of first each time the band faces a hurdle in their path 😊.

3. Searching for that kindred spirit
It’s human nature to look for a companion with similar interest or someone who can emphatize with us. With musicians, fans often find that connection in the lyrics they write. For me personally, as I get older, lyrics interest me less and less as I see each person’s life as being unique to that person. Those lyrics are the artist’s own story. Not mine. Nobody else can write my life story. If you have a strong core within you, there would be no need for you to find solace in song lyrics.
4. Not having a fulfilling life of your own
We all have issues in our life and for a lot of us, music and fandoms are our escape. The more we immerse ourselves in the escapism, the more we feel that we can alleviate those issues, albeit temporarily. I see a lot of fans like this online. Behind a fan account, there is the possibility of a depressed person running it.
Some fans let the escapism take over their lives and end up not being able to separate fantasy from reality 😕
i. No, your ships aren’t real no matter how much you want that singer and guitarist to marry each other.
ii. No, combining two band members’ names together in every hashtag, GIF, artwork and multiple fan accounts don’t magically turn the real persons into a couple.
iii. No, you have no reason to be mad when other fans call you out for being “fake” ….. (*insert a rock star name here) … because you really ARE “faking” being someone else with that “roleplayer” account.
Work on your issues first, find your inner happiness and you’ll find that music or any form of art is nothing more than what it is. A piece of art that you appreciate but it’s not your life and death 😊.
Channel that passion towards supporting the artists
By that, I mean buy their music and official releases even little by little. That’s the biggest gift you can give to them and in the long run, yourself when 20 years down the road, you look back at your collection and see it as the treasure from your yesteryears 😉.
