Unexpectedly normal
John Constantine falling in love with an Eldritch creature wasn't the weirdest thing he'd ever loved. After his dates with King Shark and some demons, this was among his most normal romances!
Phantom seemed like a creature of darkness and ice but he was the opposite: attentive, kind and loving; things that generally shouldn't be combined with Constantine (given his usual tendency to blow his chance with anyone who treated him well), but something made him stick with him.
Sure, the Justice League Dark judged him every time they saw him but he couldn't care less. When Phantom nervously told him he had something he wanted to show him, John was prepared for anything: a cult, a corpse, some crime he'd have to feign ignorance of (he didn't mind helping with a crime or two).
He hadn't expected Phantom to decide to show him his "true form" (Unexpectedly his boyfriend looked human, usually the opposite happened to him!), and sheepishly admitted that the first time he came to the dimension his powers had gotten out of control, leaving him in a form he used very little. And fuck, his boyfriend was hot as hell.
Constantine remembered when they met, he remembered the cult summoning "the most powerful creature in existence", he remembered the dread he felt when he saw Phantom appearing in all his Eldritch glory, but most of all, he remembered his disbelief when the creature started scolding the cultists as if they were children.
Phantom admitted his name was Danny (Danny Phantom, he just forgot to mention it), and he didn't know how to tell him, he looked so nervous that John couldn't help but joke with him.
"Are you human? These are things you talk about in time, bloody hell" Constantine pretended to be offended, pulling a cigarette out of his jacket "you know damn well I don't date normal humans sweetheart."
Danny looked confused, but understood what was going on in a matter of seconds.
"Lucky for you I'm not a normal human" Danny joked, taking the cigarette from his hands "I'm half ghost, a walking physical impossibility, is that enough for your dating standards?"
John pretended to think before shrugging and kissing him; sure, he'd have to get used to the lack of darkness, and extra organs (though he was sure he could persuade Danny to switch between forms), but as far as he was concerned, this was just a win-win.
Danny wondered if he should have started with Phantom's form first but he had no desire to give the hellblazer more ideas. He was aware of his partner's odd tastes, so he was actually nervous that he would reject him for being human (which was definitely a big difference from Amity), but as John kissed him just as intensely as always he guessed there was nothing to worry about.

I just read this fic:
And can I say, I love the idea of Jason joining the Fenton family so much? Usually is otherwise, and I really like that, but they would be so good for each other.
He would fit so well with them, a family of bright, intelligent, people with feral overprotective tendencies and academic aspirations (no, Danny is not the exception, he wanted to be an astronaut). Jazz finally would have someone to nerd about non-ghost/technological things and he's a triumphant at the same level as her— a triumphant in a genius family.
Danny would have a Big brother who is happy to scare anyone he asks, help him with the superhero things one only can master (lol) through experience or a mentor's guide, and he can introduce him to the ghost culture. Besides, he would enjoy listening to Danny's space infodump.
Danielle and he would get along like a house on fire. He would carry her on his shoulders for fun but also so Ellie could look down on people she's being petty with. And they would exchange travel stories.
Last but not less important, Jack and Maddie could be excellent parents for Jason, especially post-resurrection. When he needs to feel safe and loved. And in a universe where Maddie and Jack turned pages and are doing better now— They're putting effort to be better parents because they love their kids— that's what he gets. Unconditional love.
He went for a lot of things and then when he was finally in a safe place, everything went down and he died. He woke up to a world that didn't change a single bit of those parts— those parts that hurt him and others that can't do anything but try to defend themselves and resist. And yet, it changed too much. The people he cares for and love were different, and he could accept that with time, but what was the point if they didn't would try to do the same for him?
Because from his point of view, they don't love him anymore or not in the same way he loves them. Not at the same amount either. And it hurts. Knowing that he's never going to be as loved as the others. That his dad prefers a fake memory of a son that he doesn't seem to remember well, an illusion, over him, a son that came back from death and cried for him even when he couldn't think. When he was a brainless zombie basically. It hurts him to know that, at his father's eyes, he worths nothing now. It hurts him every time he sees the scar in his throat.
It no surprises him when one day he wakes up feeling there's liquid fire destroying him from inside. He's having trouble to breathe and his head is screaming nothing and everything at once— Fortunately, he doesn't stay alone like that for too long.
At some moment his phone must have gone off because before he noticed it, he had it in his hand and a familiar voice was talking from the other side. For some miracle (or what Roy called his Jay-senses) Roy Harper decided to call him at whatever hour it was. They talked. What was happening? He didn't know. Is he injured? No. Is he in pain? "..." What did he need? Again, he didn't know.
For when Jason ended the call, they must have spent at least a hour on it. He vaguely remembers that the sky was still dark when he woke up and now the sun was— well, not out because it was Gotham, but it was somewhere up there.
Two hours later, Jason is driving out of Gotham, following Roy's advice. Who may not be a therapist but learned enough about mental health from Dinah to know what Jason needed. Space from the metaphorical knife in his heart. So he chose a random direction and started moving.
The next morning Jason finds himself in a town called Amity Park, Illinois, he thinks. He wasn't paying too much attention to anything that wasn't the road. Quite the opposite, actually. He was looking for a distraction.
At that exact moment, a green glowing blur collided five feet from him. Whoa, that was close. The green blur was followed by a flying... galaxy-themed child? Said child raised his hand and shouted a green beam to the crater where the green crashed.
Well, he was looking for a distraction, wasn't him? Maybe he should wait and see what's happening here. He doesn't know if the kid is a meta defending himself of a robot or just practicing his powers.
"Wao! Wao there kid! Watch the bike! I just painted it! Don't ruin my hard work like that". So, the green one was a person, not a thing. Good to know.
"Well, don't ruin MY hard work then, Johnny——", the glowing star child frowned, tilting his head. "Do you sense that? Is like—" he closed his eyes and turned around— And what kind of relationship do they have that he can do that with someone he was attacking just a seconds ago?— the green guy also did the same thing. It looked a bit funny. What were they even doing? Maybe they were searching something?
Well, he was never going to find out that spying on them like a stalker. That was more a thing of— yeah. No. Not that he was hidden, just in silence under the shadow of this big tree. So, yeah, nothing like him.
"Hey", he stepped out— and immediately got wrapped by a black whip thingy and pulled in front of the glowing people. The thing screeched. What was this?
"Shit. You're core is breaking bad man."
His what?
____
Then they carry him to Danny's home and Johnny goes for Frostbite while Danny explains him what a core is because dude looks so confused. Then he has to explain what a halfa is and boy, he didn't need another identity crisis.
Jazz arrives in the middle of this, sees his brother giving a Ghost Intensive Course resumed to a strange teenager on the sofa, and postpones her own crisis (because they ARE turning in her parents, damnit) to start damage control.
For when Frostbite comes with a core expert aside, the Fenton parents had already wrapped Jason like a burrito. Jack is seated on the next couch to him with a plate of cookies (from Tucker's dad btw), Maddie is placed beside Jason talking about his time at college, and the three Fenton children are coming down from preparing the guest room.
Turn out his core IS shattering because, for ghosts, that are partially made of it, emotions are highly important. So, experiences like abandonment or betrayal, for example, can cause damage to the core.
The feeling of burning was the energy of his core escaping through leaks. Frostbite tells them that if he hadn't got help now, he probably would have felt a sharp sudden pain in a few days and exploded. Jason almost choke on ecto-rade when he heard that, he was at the edge of his second death and would have been an explosion. Again.
He gets promptly distracted when the other yeti, a lady called Blizzard, inquires that the liquid sensation was probably a sign that he has a water affinity core, and proceeds to explain what core affinities are. He can't help but grin because that sounds just like he will be able to do water bending. What? He died at fifteen, he was allowed to act childish sometimes.
----
Anyways, that's all what I have so far. Feel free to add anything.

reading the crossover headcanons for TOH was amazing!
i wanted to request a crossover with TOH and Steven Universe if possible! (also with Hunter x Reader) You can decide between reader being half-gem, like Steven, or fully gem! If you can't or don't want to, that's okay! Aand I really love your headcanons! You make them long and detailed! It's truly amazing.
Crossover Headcanons | SU x TOH [Hunter x Gem//Hybrid!Reader]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
thank you for requesting, anon
These are written with a gender neutral reader in mind and have a general chronology from the reader’s last moments in little homeworld until they end up with Hunter, so apologies if this gets long!
Note : this is the first time I’ve written for the SU canon, so I’m not as experienced with that universe. Also my portrayal of these characters is still pretty rocky, so I may rework this in the future.
The first few months you spent in Little Homeworld had felt almost like a dream come to life; freedom to be yourself and explore a world full of organic life without the restrictions placed on you by the diamonds? It was fantastic! However, that feeling of unrestricted feeling soon started to grow stale as you realise that the growth of the small colony had already started to stagnate—and that not all humans were welcoming of intergalactic immigrants like your kind.
So to ease your mind you opted to take the warp to the next star system over—craving that same sense of excitement that you had during the gem war
Simply standing on the warp again was enough to get your blood pumping with a reignited vigour for exploration
A feeling so palpable that you failed to notice the array of spindly cracks that spanned the surface of the device, and the way that a sickly dull light pulsated beneath your feet (the sight accompanied by a warning hum far too low for you to notice)
Though you couldn’t ignore the way the warp didn’t immediately go off like usual, nor could you neglect the searing pain that spread through your veins and constricted your throat; leaving you in so much pain that you couldn’t even move or scream before your vision was engulfed in a glitching, sickeningly bright light
It must have been several hours later when you woke up, based on how high the sun was in the sky… was the sky that red before?
Your head was pounding and although your vision was blurry, yet you couldn’t ignore how different your surroundings were from the earth you were used to
The sky was a faint red and the ground beneath your feet was dusted with deep maroon grass—it was soft and warm under your fingertips but with how much organic matter there was you knew that this wasn’t a colony
Hell, you didn’t even arrive on a warp on this end, so either you had been transported to somewhere else because a malfunction (unusual, but likely) or someone had taken you from the receiving warp and dropped you off in the middle of a clearing (far less likely)
Suddenly struck with worry, you sat up and moved your clothes to get a good look at your gem, letting out a relieved sigh when you saw it undamaged (clearly you’d landed where you woke up as most organics would have tried to remove it from your body before dumping you)
Realising that you were mostly safe you slowly rose to your feet and decided to explore your new environment, hand hovering near your gem in case you needed to defend yourself from whatever creatures had made their home here—trying to make yourself appear as small, quiet and unnoticeable as possible as you went
However, your efforts seemed to be in vein as you were quickly greeted by an excitable and loud human girl who practically screamed her welcome to you
You were torn between fleeing and fighting her when she offered her hand and introduced herself as “Luz the human”, her demeanour quite closely mirroring what you’d heard about Steven when he was younger from his mothers—it was almost endearing how much she tried to hold in her joy at seeing another “human”. You almost didn’t have the heart to tell her the truth as she walked you back to her home.
You were accosted at the door by an organic tube with an owl’s face that quickly and gleefully introduced itself as Hooty—the creepy, but rather friendly, house demon
Luz made an effort to hastily brush him off and hurry you both inside where you met with the other two inhabitants of the home as well as Luz’s “awesome girlfriend”, Amity.
Eda, an older witch with grey hair that hardly suited her age, greeted you with muted suspicion, not even taking her eyes off of you as she addressed the human at your side—seemingly unsure of your motives but trusting herself to be stronger than you (if her grip on her staff was anything to go by)
King, however, was much more brazen and blatant in his distrust of you, stomping over and pointing an accusing claw up at you as he threatened you in every way he could muster (even if all that got him was a halfhearted coo from you that left the creature more frustrated and downtrodden than before)
The guest, Amity, meanwhile, looked over at you with disinterest before she caught a glimpse of your (colour) gem peeking out from your clothing—immediately pointing it out and questioning you about it, much to your chagrin
This inevitably led to a very long and semi-complicated conversation discussing the intricacies of your species and how, no, you’re technically not a human
No you weren’t trying to deceive Luz, either, you just felt too awkward to correct her
But when all was said and done (and you were all out of steam after a several hour session of intense questioning and frustration at miscommunications) they seemed much more relaxed around you—even willing to let you stay with them, at Luz’s request, so long as you pulled your weight around the house and helped to keep them safe
And, really, how hard could that be? You fought in an intergalactic war so taking out a few organics should be a piece of cake (as Steven would say)
After spending a few weeks in this strange new world you had come to realise one specific thing; it wasn’t easy. It was, in fact, the exact opposite.
If you had to bubble one more guard you were going to scream
What had they done to make this Emperor hate them so much?
It felt as though half of your time was spent bubbling, blocking or disabling people that had made their way to the Owl House—and the rest was spent painstakingly explaining your abilities and species to Amity, Lilith and Luz
Granted, that wasn’t the most stressful part of your stay
No
That was hands down the stresses that came with visits from Luz’s friends from Hexside: the endlessly kind and protective Willow and the ever-curious and annoyingly quick witted Gus
That being said, you did appreciate their enthusiasm to learn about and accommodate you—even if the look Willow gave you when you spoke about the empire’s treatment of organic life did leave you rather shaken
So what little free time you had was spent learning about the local culture and sharing your experiences with them
Training with Amity and Eda
Helping Willow with her plants in whatever way you can based on your gem
Creating gem clones to help Gus perfect his illusions even further
Teaching Lilith and Luz about your abilities as well as those of your fellow gems, even helping the latter learn to write using gem glyphs
It was heartwarming to see others so passionate about your home, even if their insistence on pushing you to your limits could be rather frustrating (especially early in the mornings when your patience ran thin)
However, the longer you spent there the more members of the Emperor’s Coven (amongst others) you ended up coming across. One particularly memorable instance occurred when you were escorting a fretting Amity through Bonesborough with the twins (who’s presence you had grown rather fond of as their visits became more frequent).
Ed had dragged Em back to the library a good few minutes ago, leaving you and Amity to your own decides as you weaved in and out of the foot traffic—only to stop completely when the youngest Blight suddenly froze before grabbing your hand and darting off to an adjacent alleyway
As you went to protest, she promptly clamped one hand over your mouth and gestured rather violently for you to stay quiet before nodding towards a figure just a bit away from you
From the golden mask and white cloak you knew they were a member of the Emperor’s Coven—but you’d seen them before, on the posters littered around the city, each exploring passersby to join their coven
Golden Guard
That was a definite threat
So you passed the girl a spare cloak and did what you could to mask your own appearance before carefully making your way back home, shopping be damned—one hand over your gem just in case he happened to notice you
Though thankfully he didn’t
Not that it stopped you from filing him away as someone to be wary of anyway; he was the emperor’s right hand man, after all, so there was no such thing as being “too cautious”
And for a while that’s exactly what it was, not that you saw much of him that is, but from what you’d been told about Luz and Amity’s run ins with him you were glad to have never seen him face-to-face. If you had, you were almost certain he wouldn’t come out unscathed—teenage protege or not.
So with all that in mind, the last that you were expecting to see on a relatively peaceful Saturday evening was the unmasked Golden Guard practically unconscious and leaning on Luz and Eda for support as they burst through the door
Completely ignoring Hooty as usual as they carefully laid him down on the seat beside you (after you’d hurriedly gotten up, that is)
He looked to be in an awful state, with his visible skin bloodied, bruised and scarred whilst his usually pristine uniform was tattered and caked in dirt and what seemed to be even more of his blood
Seeming to notice your distress, Eda briefly addressed you and her sister before sending you all off to gather supplies (or heal if your gem allowed it)
“The kid’s been through a lot, but he’s with us now. Trust me, I wouldn’t have carried him all this way if I had any doubts about it.”
And that was that
It took Hunter (as he introduced himself) over a week to even be able to get out of bed and walk around unassisted—and whilst he actively avoided speaking about what had happened to him, you had a feeling that Belos was somehow involved
Though things were still rather tense for a month or so after he arrived, no matter how hard Luz tried to integrate him (and no matter how polite and welcoming Willow and Gus tried to be)
And you didn’t even want to recall the shouting match that occurred when Amity saw him in the living room with Luz….
It seemed as though he was just more content to shut himself away with L’il Rascal and only interact with Luz and Eda; the former to learn from her and the latter because she wouldn’t let him get away with anything but
That wasn’t even mentioning the palpable tension between him and Lilith (she would only say that it was from their time in the coven—and Luz suspected he’d annoyed her a bit too much—but nothing else would come of it)
But the others were worried about him, so you were sent in as a neutral party to talk with him about… things. You weren’t really told what and you didn’t have the time to ask.
Initially he was incredibly closed off and would only address you briefly, barely even acknowledging your presence as he gave his full attention to the scattered papers on his desk, each depicting a different spell and each ever so slightly off
So, as gently as you could you took the quill from him and drew a simple glyph on a spare scalp of paper, carefully leading him through the motions before leaning back and activating the spell (and smiling at his much more openly interested expression)
That then sparked a deep conversation about different types of magic—specifically wild magic and glyphs—as you shared what you knew about the topic with one another, every so often breaking off into laughter or patient silence as he’d run across the room to show you his notes or books he’d found
Naturally this would lead to him asking you about where you came from and you discussing your origins with him
Homeworld
The Diamond Authority
The gem war
Colonies
Soldiers
Shattering
The Crystal Gems
Everything
He was incredibly easy to talk to as he listened with a genuine intensity to what you said, nodding along and even asking well thought out questions about your world where appropriate
Depending on how close you were, he may even ask to see your gem and ask about its purpose
If you let him touch it, he’d be so very gentle, almost treating you as though you were made of glass—maybe even sketching it down and noting down your abilities and weaknesses in his personal notebook and apologising if it was weird
This mutual interest in magic and your shared experiences of either having to conform to a specific role your whole life [full gem reader] or feeling out of place and weaker because of your shortcomings [half gem reader] would be the basis of your friendship turned relationship. The transition between the two would be so incredibly seamless and slow that you wouldn’t even notice it happening—one moment you two were best friends sparring and the next you were hiding your blushing face in his neck as he hugs you and apologises for hitting you a bit too hard with his magic.
Your relationship would be sweet and slow and genuine
Hunter is new to receiving any kind of affection, so you’d probably have to teach him a thing or two—but he’d learn quite quickly so don’t worry
He’d spend hours studying your culture and language just to write you notes or offer you affirmations in ways unique to your culture, even calling you “my (Y/n)” after a while
Likewise, the first time you called him “my Hunter” he was left red in the face for the rest of the day (he loved it, though, so don’t stop)
But the moment someone makes a teasing remark about how soft he’s gotten (usually one of the Blight siblings or his own younger sister figure, Luz), Hunter will partially revert to being cold in public (whilst still being affectionate and openly touch starved in private)
In short, your relationship with him would be built on a foundation of mutual trust, affection and understanding that sprouted from friendship and honest conversations about your passions and pasts

Your Vinira is sSO SWEET MY HEART US MELTING! How Viney not only accept Emira' stutter but straight up loves it?! Oh my poor bleeding heart! Now, my own question: How do the redeemed Blight parents react to their relationship?
Ooohhh see at least in my Willumity headcanons, Alador and Odalia don’t redeem themselves for several years. Like, maybe 8 or 9 years from when our girls first start dating. I imagine Viney and Emira become a thing in roughly the same time frame. So Emira doesn’t even tell her parents about her girlfriend. Viney introduces Emira to her parent(s) (eventually, maybe after like 6 months of dating?? Maybe a year?) and they are super wary at first because a Blight???? Is dating our daughter?????? And Viney reassures them that yes, they’re dating and it’s not some wild ruse. That being said, the heads of the Blight family also don’t know they’re dating so like. They’re trying to keep their relationship on the DL.
But if I’m gonna dip deeper......
( way deeper. This is another one of those Long One’s, lol )
I think....if Alador and Odalia catch wind of their daughters dating people they don’t approve of, there would be hell to pay. Like, all of them being grounded until further notice and that means escorts to and from school, no friends, no extra curricular activities, nothing but school and home. Not even their “approved friends” are able to communicate with them because their scrolls would be confiscated. Tutors (babysitters) while they do homework and further studying on weekends. No contact with the outside world. And if they even try to speak with anyone at school? They’ll all be pulled from Hexside and be homeschooled from then on.
All the while they’ll be using their connections to have Viney, Willow and Luz expelled, permanently. They may not have too much sway over these delinquents’ lives, but they’re going to make sure they’ll never be able to advance in society. And then they find out that this “Luz” is the Human that dared go against Emperor Belos? I can’t even begin to imagine the hell they’d bring down on them all.
So yeah, there’s a lot of disaster scenarios like that that haunt the Blight girls and ensure that they’ll never tell their parents of their relationships and will keep most displays of affection away from the rats that would somehow get the word back to them. At first it might hurt Luz and Viney to not be able to be affectionate, but Willow 100% understands. She already has that history looming over her in her memory. Viney and Luz will often use the Secret Room of Shortcuts in order to just hang out with their respective girls between breaks when they can.
I genuinely don’t know how the timeline of events will play out in the show in regards to Belos and the portal. It could take just days, weeks, months??? Years???? Before he’s taken down accordingly and a new portal is made.
Regardless, I like to think that in that time though, the moment the twins turn 18, they leave and they take Amity with them. They’re not just going to sit idly by anymore. Whether that means revoking their family name by some intensive ritual or just fleeing and using whatever money they took with them to find an apartment somewhere, they need to get out from under their parents’ thumb. As soon as they’ve established new lives for themselves, they are as open with their relationships as they want. They might even be a little over-eager, what with Amity kissing her girlfriends for probably too long at school in front of everyone, or Emira actively distracting Viney from her work while on the clock.
By the time we get to the point where they’re trying to re-enter their children’s lives, it’s stiff and awkward at best and like bulls butting heads at worst. The Blights are using any method they can to bring their children back home, whether it’s promises of extra freedom or putting in a good word to their coven of choice; even sending them extravagant gifts that none of them want. This maybe goes on for about a year before the twins and Amity agree to meet with their former parents. They bring their respective partners with them too; not as back up or anything, but mostly as moral support and as a giant middle finger to their parents.
Alador and Odalia don’t hold back their disdain. For their children’s’ foolishness, for their childish behavior thats ruffled so many feathers within the Emperor’s coven, for the damage they’ve all done to the Blight name; and for their daughters’ choices in partners.
They could take all of the other nonsense their parents were spouting, but being so outwardly hostile to their respective partners??? That causes Emira to nearly turn the entire Blight Manor upside down and Amity to summon an abomination large enough to chuck the manor into the Boiling Sea with her parents inside. Edric manages (somehow) to keep them both sane long enough to continue their conversation, at which point I think the Blights simply write off their girls’ anger as petty childishness.
And that. Is what sets off Luz, Willow and Viney. They absolutely go off on the Blights and just tear them both a new one. I think it’s been a long time since the Blights actually feared anyone besides the Emperor, but in that meeting, they feared these teenagers who seemed to radiate more power than they’d ever been witness to before. I think Emira and Amity are both shocked but Edric just gets comfortable and summons some popcorn to watch the show because finally, someone is telling off these miserable witches they used to call their parents.
They don’t meet with their parents again for a few more years after that encounter. I think Emira and Viney maybe break up once for a week before getting back together due to a misunderstanding, but Amity couldn’t possibly be happier with her life as it goes on, free from her parents and being able to be with her girls as she wants.
Over the course of the following years, they all still receive correspondence from their parents. On every birthday, they send a sum of money and a simple greeting. Every holiday season is the exact same. I think Luz is the only one to actually reach out to Alador and Odalia. I think she sends them a photo of their most recent holiday get together; where everyone is smiling or laughing or making messes or whatever. The exact opposite of every holiday held at the Blight Manor. They see each of their children, smiling and looking truly happy. And on the back, Luz maybe writes something about wanting to speak to them. Alone. Not with Amity or Willow, not with Emira or Viney, not with Edric, no one else. Just Luz and the Blights. They agree.
When Luz meets with them, it’s tense. They’re all quiet and stiff and still have an aura of hatred hanging between them. But Luz clears her throat and informs them that she’s planning on proposing to Amity and Willow. She’s still not sure when, or how, but it’s something she’s planning. She also informs them that if they don’t want to miss another wedding, they’d better clean their acts up and fast. And she just hands them a small scrapbook full of pictures of Emira and Viney’s wedding. They hadn’t even known it had happened. They weren’t informed, let alone invited, and Luz was granting them possibly the only chance they’ll ever have again at being in their children’s lives. Luz lets them know to reach out to her if they decide they want to be in their kids’ lives again and leaves them with the scrapbook.
When they do reach out, Luz shows up at Blight Manor with three others in tow: Eda and Lilith Clawthorne and Camila Noceda. They are three different kinds of pissed and the Blights have the good sense to just be good hosts and invite them in with little fanfare or argument. They all settle in with cups of tea and I think Lilith goes first; she tells them about how she’s had the opportunity to watch Amity grow up, even more so after she abandoned the Emperor’s coven. Over time she still acted as something of a mentor, but also as a parental figure when she or the twins needed her to be. She was honored to officiate Emira and Viney’s wedding. She’s grateful to be part of their lives because she’s been a witness to their incredible achievements. She really digs the knife in deeper when she tells them that Emira and Viney are considering having kids but Emira’s been especially hesitant due to fears that she’ll somehow end up like her parents.
Eda goes next, not even having touched her tea, just sitting with her legs and arms crossed and glaring at them in the most severe way. She tells them about the various sleepovers she’s hosted over the years. How at least half of those sleepovers found Eda talking outside with at least one Blight child if not all of them in the middle of the night.
She tells them she got herself a scroll for the first time ever because she knew those kids needed an adult figure that wouldn’t reprimand them for existing. They needed an adult figure to go to for comfort and guidance, someone that could reassure them that their best is more than enough. They don’t need to work themselves into the ground for a scrap of approval or force themselves into the rigid mold their parents made for them.
She tells them she’s seen more tears from the Blight kids than she’s ever seen from any other kind of creature. Not even Luz cried as often as they did, and she’s a giant softy (Luz lets out an indignant “hey!” At that and pouts). She tells them that she, Edalyn Clawthorne, the Boiling Isles Most Wanted, has provided more warmth and comfort for their kids in the time she’s known them than they [the Blight Parents] had in their lives.
Eda hasn’t had magic for years. But everyone knew how powerful she once was. They had all gone to school together too, of course they remember her and the trouble she caused. She lets them know that if she even had an ounce of the magic she once had, she would use it to decimate the Blight parents in every way possible for causing so much harm to three bright, talented, loving children that have grown into some of the most powerful witches the Boiling Isles has to offer. She also lets them know that before they even consider being part of those kids’ lives again, they have a lot of shit to work on and sort out. Because if they don’t? It doesn’t matter whether or not Eda has magic. She will decimate them.
Finally Camila sets her empty tea cup down and levels them with the most venomous stare she can. She’s the only one of Luz’s guests that’s actually also a biological mother. If she could, she’d probably go Super Saiyan with the sheer power she’s exuding with this stare. The Blights actually flinch which causes Lilith to have to hide a chuckle (she’s been on the receiving end of that rage before and she’s excited to see it unleashed on them).
She just starts tearing into them like her life depends on it. She doesn’t hold back in the slightest. She admonishes them for holding their social status at a higher priority than the safety and happiness of their own children. Her criticisms and curses are all laid out with razor precision. The longer she goes on, the more the Blights shrink in on themselves. Alador definitely starts crying at one point but refuses to wipe his tears away because he knows there’ll just be more anyway. The Clawthornes are shocked at seeing him cry, throughout their time at Hexside and while Lilith worked with the Blights in the Emperor’s coven, they’d never seen Alador express an emotion beyond irritation. Odalia also has tears in her eyes but she refuses to let them fall. Her face is bright red in shame though, it just grows steadily more red as Camila goes on. (Luz idly notes that that must be where Amity and the twins get their blushing genes from. She also notes that Odalia looks remarkably like Amity and wonders if that’s what Amity will look like when they’re that age. Her heart flutters a little at the concept of being with Amity for the rest of their lives, but she tampers down the runaway thoughts to refocus on her mom’s tirade).
By the time Camila’s done with them, Alador and Odalia are hiding their faces in shame. Alador’s trying to stifle his crying to the best of his ability cuz his breaths are turning ragged from how much emotion he’s experiencing. Odalia is desperately trying to wipe her tears away without ruining her makeup, but she’s also quietly sniffling and hiccuping. Camila sits back with a satisfied huff and Luz pats her shoulder (as a thank you? As a good job? As a ‘tag me in it’s my turn’? Who can say).
After letting the Blights collect themselves, Luz clears her throat to get their attention. She struggles for a moment to figure out the best way to say it, but ends up setting her jaw firmly and just blurting it out: she asks for their blessing for her to marry Amity.
After a moment of shocked silence, Luz’s courage starts to crumble a little and she begins to explain herself; she knows that Amity doesn’t value their opinion. She hasn’t for years now. Luz also doesn’t value their opinion. But if she’s going to such lengths to try and give one of the loves of her life her parents back? She may as well start off with a show of respect.
Odalia is the one that gets up from where she’s sitting and quietly approaches Luz. Eda and Lilith are about ready to throw hands if need be and Camilia starts to put her arm in front of Luz, but Luz stands up to meet her. Odalia gently takes Luz’s hands (she also notes that her hands are just as tiny and soft as Amity’s) and brings both of their hands up to about chest level. She has to clear her voice before she speaks; her throat became tight with the tears and hiccuping she was trying to hold back.
Odalia takes one hand to draw a large circle around their joined hands before clasping Luz’s hands again. She tells Luz that she absolutely has their blessing, and vows to do whatever she needs to to atone for the cruelty she put her children through. And so the Everlasting Oath is sealed.
Alador also stands up and does the same in a tear-strained voice. After his oath has been sealed, he places his hands on Luz’s shoulders and thanks her for being so damn stubborn.
They promise that they’ll be in touch with Luz again soon, but they need to talk to one another first and really sort everything out. Luz gives them a small smile and confirms that she’ll be waiting to hear from them as the Clawthornes/Nocedas stand up to leave. Before they leave, Odalia gently places a hand on Camila’s shoulder and asks her quietly if she could maybe come to her for advice on how to approach their children when they’ve figured themselves out. Camila stares at her for a moment before giving her a smile and nodding. She doesn’t have a scroll or anything, so she tells her to just reach out to Luz when they’re ready to talk. Odalia just nods and the Blights watch as their guests leave.
I think it particularly strikes Alador how casually Eda ruffles Luz’s hair and pulls her in for a side hug, loudly telling her how proud she is of her for pulling such a bold move. It dawns on him that he used to do that to Edric when he was still smaller than his own knee. It may have been after the first spell Edric ever successfully cast. Odalia sees Camila scoop Luz into her arms and plant a giant kiss to a her head, probably also praising Luz. They watch as Luz puts her arms around Eda and Camila’s shoulders as they leave the Blight estate and Alador closes the door before he starts crying again.
I think that’s the first time in years the Alador and Odalia really hug each other properly. Not to pose for a picture, not just a quick greeting as they pass each other in the halls of the Emperor’s coven, but like. For comfort. I don’t think they really realized how big and cold and empty their manor is until that moment.
I think it takes several months for them to get their acts together. They seek out a family counselor, they have weekly tea with Camila, they dust off the parenting books that have been untouched on the shelves in their library for decades. They look into Viney’s family and find out that she and Emira have started their own service beast program. The general air of grief and undertone of determination is interrupted by a moment of sheer pride at knowing their eldest daughter not only found someone she loves, but has taken the risk of starting her own business with her wife that’s a genuine service to the Boiling Isles. They make a few duplicates of the newspaper article they found announcing the grand opening of the first Service Beast Training Center and Shelter on the Boiling Isles and have it framed in different places; there’s one on the desk in their study, there’s another on their wall in their bedroom; they each have their own copy at their desks at work.
No joke, it’s taken Luz months to convince Emira and Viney that Em’s parents are trying to change. Emira has absolutely 0 faith in her parents being able to turn over a new leaf. It’s not until they hear Camila say that she’s surprised at the Blight’s improvement after their last tea meeting that they even consider that they actually are trying to change.
Luz coordinates a day and time for them to all meet once Emira and Viney agree to do so. I think they meet at a park somewhere, maybe a particularly nice public garden (maybe it’s Willow’s). Emira’s never seen her parents look so nervous before and that already sparks some hope in her heart that all of Luz’s efforts might not be naught. I think Odalia tries to reach out to hug Emira but like, actually flinches when Emira steps back. So instead they sit at one of the secluded garden tables and just talk.
Alador and Odalia apologize in as much depth as they can. Emira just sits and lets them say everything they want to say. Once they’re done with everything they can think of, they just sit in silence for a minute while Emira processes everything they’ve said. It’s not until Viney squeezes her hand that Emira finally starts crying. She wants to be angry, she is angry, but her entire heart feels like a full-grown griffon just stood up from where it was sitting and flew away. Her heart feels so much lighter. She stands up and moves to her parents and they stand and embrace her tightly for a while. Viney also feels like a huge weight has been lifted just watching the exchange. Maybe she also cries a little bit because she’s so happy to see her wife so happy. (And she maybe ignores the sound of a high five happening in the distance; she’s like, 90% sure Luz is there with someone else spying on them to make sure the meeting goes well).
All the Blights have full-on waterworks going on because they each individually realize this is the first time they’ve expressed their love for each other in probably more than a decade. Long before Emira and Edric took Amity and left. Viney maybe also hears a muffled sniffle and when she turns around to see, yup, there’s Luz, and she’s definitely crying into Willow’s shoulder. Viney rolls her eyes. Luz is such a sap. That’s probably why they all love her so much. She brings out the sap in all of them too.
After the Blights finally calm down, Alador and Odalia have an entire separate list of things to apologize to Viney for, which takes her off guard. She maybe expected an apology for the last time she saw them in person, but they went waaaay deeper than just that. And then they don’t stop at the apologies? They start thanking her for all sorts of stuff. Like loving Emira and being there for her when they weren’t. For helping her grow into the incredible person she’s become. They also congratulate them on their Service Beast Shelter and ask if maybe eventually they’d be allowed to visit and see them in their element. That’s when Viney’s face finally splits into a wide grin and she joins the big family hug they’ve got going on.
Lmao so yeah, long story short, it takes them a long-ass time, but eventually the Blights learn to love Viney 💖💖💖

He swore his sister was trying to make him go into cardiac arrest -And considering his halfa status that was quite the accomplishment-.
But there was no other explanation to his sister stubbornness, and if he knew her at all there was just no talking her down from interning at goddam Arkham.
Their parents were no help at all. Well, they had been a little helpful at first, of course, what parent isn’t concerned about their precious princess going to a city full of raging lunatics? And, ok, maybe she had gotten a full-ride scholarship from Gotham University, but she could easily get in any of the other alpha nerd colleges she had applied to when they were in elementary school, yes, elementary school- and he wasn’t surprised to find out they were still keeping tabs on his sister since then, the stalkers, but whatever, still better than the one in Loony Town.
So, with mom and dad at his back, Danny thought at the time that they could convince his sister from accepting, he should have known better ‘cause all it took was a mention of all the new, different and most likely quirky ghosts that probably haunted the other city and all the research she could do on them because, oh? didn’t she mention? The G.U. was letting her make her paper on ghost psychology, and wasn’t that just neat?
After that mom and dad -the traitors- were over the moon with all the possible research that their princess could do with the resources provided by a university, let alone one as prestigious as G.U., they had not, after all, forgotten the good chunk of investigation financed by the University of Wisconsin that led them to the creation of the ghost portal, and even that was after fighting tooth and nail for validation of their thesis. After all the ghost-related incidents of the last years, the world was finally acknowledging the validity of ghost research and these people were offering Jazz a great opportunity.
Dad and mom where static for at least one of their children was getting into a good college or, well, that is what it felt like ‘cause-
Like, they had not said anything but it was pretty clear they had given up on him getting into college. Any college.
..He wasn’t going to lie, i-it hurt a little bit.
Just enough, really…
Not that they didn’t love him or anything but, I mean it’s not like they knew the reasons behind his fucked up grades, the constant breaking of the curfew, his reluctance to get near them as much as he used to because he feared triggering another of his parent’s weapons again and- well, you get the idea.
So the interactions parents-son were a little rusty and declining because they knew he could raise his grades, after all, he had been a good student before the portal opened and the ghost started treating Amity like a playground, but they didn’t know why he wasn’t trying anymore, and his reluctance to spill the tea was not helping.
They probably thought he didn’t care.
But he did care, he was anxious all the goddamn time because of it, there was no time to get his school work done and still hunt down all the pesky bitches invading the town, what was he supposed to do? ignore the ghosts? What was he going to tell his sister and his friends??
Like ‘Sorry guys, I know I let the town go to the dogs, but look a B+!!’ Yeah, no. Not gonna happen.
But that his grades and chance of being an astronaut had been murdered in the ghost portal -not even touching the issue with his weird as shit contaminated ectoplasmic blood that wouldn’t pass the health check-ups, really he would have a better chance on steroids but whatever- didn’t mean that his sister’s chances were. You would think he would be resentful, but really, he loved his sister too fucking much, they had been through some shit together and he knew that if there was someone to be resentful to was his godawful luck.
And the Observants, fuck those bitches.
So yes, he wanted Jazz to be safe out of this weird haunted town, but just the thought of her sister getting this scholarship, to make a paper, on ghosts, in an asylum, on fucking Gotham, all by herself, and no. Fuck NO. That shit was the exact opposite of what he wanted!!
Sadly, by this point in time Jazz already had sneakily planned and executed the first steps to get the ball rolling and shut down any argument he had to throw at her, so-
Whatever.
That’s what she wanted? fine. But if she thought that he was going to let her take the bull by the horns on her own she was fucking wrong. The Fenton siblings had been ride or die since the Chicken Salad Incident of 2006 and if his sister was going to throw down in Loony Capital then so help him god he was going to be right behind her.
also, he was not staying alone with their parents, that was just asking for trouble.
As for dealing with the ghosts, well, there was always a first time for everything and he supposed there was nothing a few treats and cashing in some favors couldn’t fix. Maybe a pair of memos here or there, the diplomacy lessons that the Observants had been trying to shove down his throat -may the higher lords know why- had to come in handy sometimes for fuck sakes.
And thus the Fenton Crash Course for Suicide Missions -shut up Jazz, it is suicide- was born, because he was left with no other option more than prepare, and boy was he going to prepare.

Casper High Ch. 2
Danny Fenton hadn't expected to make a friend that day. He wasn't having the best of days- he had spent the early hours of the morning taking down any straying ghosts, trying to make sure that less ghosts would interrupt him during school. The less he missed school, the better his grades would be, and the more people would get off of his back.
That's how it's been since Sam and Tucker moved away. He didn't have his friends helping keep his secret just that. He remembered when it had happened; Sam was the first one to go. It was after a particular brutal battle between Technus, Skulker, and him. The Manson's couldn't take it anymore. They were tired of the damages and danger, so they packed up their belongings and their daughter and moved. Sam was the first domino to fall, and just like that more families had moved away. Tucker had moved after the house next to their's collapsed after Danny had been thrown into it. Luckily the house wasn't occupied by it scared the Foley's enough past the tipping point.
Casper High School was still the bustling school it was to start, but now so many familiar faces had been replaced by strangers, those whose families either didn't care about the danger or were interested in the town's so called ghosts. However Amity Park wasn't as lively as it once was. The town had an unspoken curfew, and not many were out after ten at night, the town's park the first to be deserted at night.
The constant ghosts attacks had not only taken a toll on Danny, but on the town as well. Danny's body oftentimes mirrored his town nowadays.
Danny was happy to just make a friend who didn't think he was a freak, or know of his parent's reputation. The day was nice, even if all he and Sam did was stay in the motel room and just hang out after school. Danny and Sam had spent hours just talking about anything and everything, Danny even helping Sam catch up on the few lessons he showed up in the middle of. Dean popped in two hours later with Nasty Burger, which had led to a long discussion between all of them about the merits of such a name correlating to food.
It was safe to say that Danny had the best day of his life since his friends left. He wasn't used to sitting and talking for hours in person with people who he barely knew about topics so diverse. It was nice to unwind for a few hours and just let himself be. He didn't have to worry about what the others were thinking or having to broach topics that needed to be covered. It was nice and Danny could get used to it- that's why going home was like a slam of reality to him.
"Hold up. This, this is where you live?" Sam's stuttered out response came out once the impala pulled to a stop in front of the monstrosity that was Fenton Works. Danny gave a sheepish smile before rubbing the back of his neck.
"Uh yea. Weird, I know." Danny slipped out of the car, only for Dean to speak before he could walk up his steps.
"It's fucking cool." Dean grinned, looking up at the odd UFO sitting on the roof. "You've got to give us a tour one of these days."
"Really?" Danny looked up shock, blinking rapidly, surprised that the older man actually seemed to like his house. Dean nodded enthusiastically in response to the question. Glancing back, Danny noted the glowing neon sign was on signaling his parents were home. "Yea, maybe we can do that sometime soon if you want."
"That'll be fun." Sam smiled from the other side of the car, leaning closer to the driver-side window. "Maybe you could show us some of the stuff you've built." It wasn't much if Danny was being honest, just some small functioning robots and edits to his parents weapons to protect himself, but Sam's interest created a warm feeling in him.
"Sure. Anyways, I hope you guys have a good night, drive safe." Danny traded goodbyes with the duo, waiting until Dean drove off in the Impala before jogging up to his door. The moment the front door opened, Danny knew where his parents were based on the dim lighting and the noises coming from the basement. With a sigh, the teen made his way into the kitchen and glanced around. Surprised to see it clean, Danny concluded that his parents probably forgot to eat anything. Pulling out four slices of leftover pizza, ignoring the soft growls and glow emitting from the bottom drawer, and shoved the food into the microwave.
When he entered the lab, he found both his parents bent over a table. A trembling ectopus sat in a small cage, his mother extracting samples from him. Danny bit his lip and the uncomfortable feeling that swelled through him at the thought of the experiments, his chipper mood dampening a bit.
"Mom, dad." Danny called over the sound of his dad soldering away, pulling his parents away from their work. "I brought you some pizza."
"Oh Danny, when did you get home?" Maddie asked, pulling her hood down to expose short auburn hair. "That's sweet of you, thank you baby." Maddie smiled politely, hugging her son softly as she took the plate and placed it nearby. Her husband was the exact opposite of his mother's gentle approach.
"Danny boy!" Jack greeted loudly, pulling his son into his infamous 'Jack Fenton Bear Hugs' once the food was safely out of the way. "You should see what we're working on! Your mother and I were about to figure out a way to cause ghost energy to-"
"I just got in." Danny cut his dad off as nice as he could- he didn't really want to hear this. "I would love to sit and chat, but I really should look over an essay due tomorrow." Danny explained, dislodging himself from his dad.
"Education is important." Maddie smiled, waving him off before turning to her husband and joining him in the conversation about their new device. Danny almost turned away when he caught eyes with the ectopus and guilt filled him. Quietly, he reached a hand out and pressed the release button before turning and speed walking out of the lab. Luckily Danny always seemed to be invisible, even before his powers came to be. Even in his own house Danny was often overlooked; Danny just learned to use this to his advantage. Releasing ghosts was just one way he could use his inherent constant invisibility to his own benefit.
The moment he stepped out the door, he could hear the chaos ensue- his father's yelling and his mother's quick orders bounced of metal walls, echoing up the stairs and up into the normal house. A soft smile took over his features, his parents were really were something else. Humming softly as he made his way to his room, passing by the empty room that once occupied his sister, who was currently off to college. He sent a quick text message to his best friends to be online in two minutes.
"Hey guys." Danny greeted when the two faces appeared on his screen.
"Danny!" Sam called, her black headboard behind her.
"Dude!"
Danny laughed at the different greetings he got, before taking in the appearances before him. Tucker hadn't changed all that much from when he was in Amity Park, aside from his hair now being grown out and his attraction to hoodies. Sam had actually cut her hair, shaving one side in protest of the move. The buzz cut had actually grown on her, the teen keeping it, determined to not grow it back out. Sam's style was still gothic, not changing one bit as the years passed since she has made the decision to delve into this genre.
"How was your day?" Sam's voice crackled through the headset, "Mine was boring, I spent all day with my mom going over everything for the gala." Danny smiled at the reminder of that, he knew Sam was going to pull a fast one on her parents and wear a dark red and black lace dress to the event over the shy blue one her parents picked out.
"I spent my day with the robotics team. Perry almost has all the programming done for the medic bot, while Becca and I are almost done with the framing. Now all we need is to figure out the best tracks to use and it'll be fully functional." Tucker beamed from his screen, a grin on his face before his expression soured a tad. "Chris was being a douche and almost broke an arm off because we refuse to let him work on it."
"Smart choice." Sam and Danny both responded at the same time, pulling a laugh from all teens present.
"My day was actually pretty good." Danny smiled at his friends who seemed glad to hear that. Danny hadn't been the same since they left. While Danny was probably the kindest of the three of them, after the accident, Danny was reluctant to make new relationships with others. That and Danny was the nerd of the school, on the lowest rung, and he was invisible. The only time anyone paid attention to him was to either bully him or to call him out for not doing something. "A new kid, Sam, he invited me over and I had a great time talking with him and his older brother."
"A great time." Tucker mused, wiggling his eyebrows. Sam laughed while Danny shook his head and sighed.
"Not like that you perv." Danny chuckled. "I helped him catch up on lessons and we talked. He let me out of the locker Dash stuck me in after he got lost on his way to class seeing as he witnessed it. We had the same class so I led him to the right class."
"That's great Danny, it's great to see you making new friends." Sam smiled. "I'm surprised Amity Park has a new Sam in town."
"Yea, he's only in town for a few days. Today was his first day." Danny nodded, letting his smile slip a little.
"Hey if you become a loner again, I'm sure Poindexter won't mind eating lunch with you." The trio laughed at Tucker's joke, lightening the mood once again.
"Okay, enough about me." Danny shook his head, gesturing a hand to Tucker's side of the screen. "Tell us more about this feud between your Robotic club and Chris, and why you guys don't just kick him." A groan left the techno-geek before he launched into a long and passionate speech about Chris and just how much he's out to ruin competition for everyone else.
As always, Danny was content when he finished the video call. For once the looming sadness didn't come, armed with the knowledge that he had another friend he'll be meeting up with tomorrow. A sigh did leave him though when his eyes landed upon the stack of papers and textbooks sitting on his bed. 12:03 am the blinking red numbers of his alarm clock read, giving him about four and a half hours before he had to go on patrol before school.
Once he finished his numerous math worksheets, Danny knew that finishing his homework wasn't going to happen. Sure, he really wanted to not have to hear a lecture tomorrow from basically all his teachers but he needed to go to bed. If he didn't, he wouldn't be able to go on patrol and if he isn't able to go on patrol he'll have to skip classes. And that is just another lecture waiting to happen. It's quite the vicious cycle and it's not like he can be in two places at once...
Wow, sometimes he was just downright stupid.
Danny focused on his ghost core, grinning when three copies came out full and corporeal. Danny silently ordered the clones to get to work. One taking on each subject- English, Math, and History. With a loud yawn, the teen fell face first into his pillows before he was out like a light, comforted with the knowledge of where his clones were and that once he woke up, all of their memories would flood back into his mind.
He was able to sleep three hours and fifteen minutes before his ghost sense woke him up, at least he stocked his room with monster, red bull, five hour energy, and espresso shots. He'll make it through, just like any other day.

Vacations Provide Second Chances - PhannieMay - Day 28 Vacation
Summary; Vlad was always going break, eventually. Because somethings are just inevitable.
Warning: discussions of death, mentions of Dan, suicidal behaviour
As soon as Danny opens the door his smile drops to a harsh frown, “what do you want, Vlad?”. Danny’s not sure what to make of Vlad’s smile actually seeming soft and genuine, though he does find it a bit sad that friendliness looks out of place on the villainous halfa’s face.
“Relax, Daniel. I don’t exist to sour your mood”, Vlad sighs as Danny rolls his eyes exaggeratedly, “I’m here to invite you on a trip. With me. A mutual vacation if you will”.
Danny glares incredulously at Vlad, the fact that Vlad doesn’t gloat over that and hasn’t insulted him yet, tells Danny Vlad’s serious here. “What’s your plot this time, old man. And what? Not inviting my mom?”, Danny crosses his arms and glares a bit harder, but gets thrown off guard when Vlad sighs and looks almost...sad?
Vlad shakes his head slightly, “no, just us and no schemes. Just the two halfa’s taking a needed break from everything. Fights, schemes, lying, being the hero, being the villain”. Vlad knows stagnation doesn’t do anyone any good, and he’s been stagnant for a long time, and young Daniel has fallen into it himself. Contemplating the routine of it all and the future had brought him to this idea. Thinking back to a place he used to haunt, “I know you have no reason to believe me, Daniel. But this is no farce, there’s a place I used to go, that I’d like to again”.
Danny can practically read the words, “just not alone”, on Vlad’s face; that’s more than enough to remind him of future Vlad. Studying Vlad’s face, and finding that it really is genuine. That’s one thing about Vlad, the guy’s actually fairly easy to read. Tilting his head down and sighing before muttering to himself, “second chances, Fenton. Second chances”. Tilting his head up to the older halfa, “this doesn’t make us family, but alright, you weird frootloop”.
Vlad gives him a strong nod, he knows his pleasure is palpable to the boy. Even if he did want Daniel as a son, it was more than obvious that was never going to happen now. And Vlad’s starting to think that just might be best, they didn’t run in the same circles at all. Heck, their circles didn’t even overlap except when they inserted themselves into each other’s lives. All that bound them was species, a lonely species of two; and Vlad was done being lonely.
Tilting his head backwards and nodding his head in the direction of Amity Park’s mall, “when you’re ready, I’ll be waiting. I’m sure you can figure out what car is mine”.
Danny shakes his head, a little weirded out, as Vlad takes his leave. Closing the door softly and muttering at it, “something’s up with him, but for once, I don’t think it’s bad”. Turning back around and heading to his room, knowing full well that Vlad knew no one else was home right now.
He didn’t exactly know what to pack, so he went with the general stereotypical shit. Groaning a bit, as he realises it was probably pretty dumb to agree to go to some unknown place with his arch enemy. Heck, it was kind of dumb to do that with his own family. So, of course, he makes sure to pack anti-ghost crap, who knows what might happen.
Zipping the bag closed, before walking over and resting his arms on his windowsill, “it really would be nice to be gone and not worry about this place for a bit. Well, ok, I’m still gonna worry”, sighing, “I’ll have to find Red. Should at least give that stupidly determined hunter a heads up”. Plus, Danny knew she’d actually would be worried if Phantom just up and disappeared; even if she wouldn’t admit it to his face.
Transforming and flying out the window, eventually coming to perch himself on her opened windowsill. Chuckling as she spins around, ghost scanner going off, “relax, it’s just me. Your friendly neighbourhood dead man”. Valerie shakes her head but smiles at the sight of him, he’s glad they’re on good terms now; especially with his friends and Jazz all being off at university. Though he’s got a suspicion she’s being more than just friendly to him nowadays.
“What’s up Phantom?”
“Oh just making your life more hectic”, Danny shrugs good-naturedly, “gonna be out of town for a bit. So the ghosties are all yours for a while”. Valerie looks torn between liking that and being annoyed, “for how long and when you leaving?”. Danny shrugs again, “no clue actually, and I’m leaving pretty well immediately”.
“Of course you’d have no clue, you really are quite a mess, you know that?”, both of them snicker, because really, they’re both messes. “Always, Red, always”, both them smile as Valerie walks up and pats him on the arm. “You better come back, you floating bastard”, Danny only smirks as he pushes himself off the windowsill. Two finger saluting her with a soft smile, before zipping off.
Placing his feet back into his room and transforming before heading downstairs. Sticking his head into the kitchen and smiling at his mom. Obviously, he can’t exactly tell her the truth, his dad really was the only Fenton who wasn’t fully aware that Vlad wasn’t exactly a good person.
“So turns out Tuck is a bit of an idiot sometimes. Sam’s already over there but he pretty well blew up his dorm room. Overloaded the speakers, don’t ask me how exactly, I’m not sure I even want to know”, both them laugh as she motions for Danny to sit down. Danny takes and eats a couple of eggs before continuing, “so now he needs the place fixed up before the dorm officials find out”. Maddie sighs, “well, I guess it would be good for you to go visit. Maybe check out the campus while you’re at it”. Danny forces down a wince at her not so subtle hint. He knows they’re disappointed with his poor schooling, especially when they all know he is damn smart. Rubbing his neck and looking away from her a little, “can’t say how long I’ll be gone. No clue just how much damage he did”.
Danny finishes the rest of his food and does indeed notice that his mom’s smile is a bit forced. He’d like to think that was because of him not being at home for a while, but he knows it’s more likely because he avoided the topic of him going back to school. It did make it kind of obvious that he didn’t intend to, and how could he? He didn’t have the time. Maybe if there was a university in Amity he could, and sure there was online programs. But he knew himself well enough to know he’d put it off unless forced otherwise. Smiling apologetically at his mom before heading up to his room.
He’s not surprised his dad’s up from the lab, as Danny comes down the stairs with his bag in tow. Talking as he hugs them, “don’t worry about a ride, got one already”. Danny both likes and hates how they don’t push him for more information. Knowing full well they once would have, as he heads out the door.
Danny shakes his head at the dark purple Bugatti Chiron, which a few other people are also either staring or glancing at. Muttering, “I don’t think that man even knows what subtle is”. Before approaching the side of the car, with the door popping open before he even gets there.
Sticking his head inside, “is this even road trip worthy?”. Vlad rolls his eyes, “the best one for it”, sticking his thumb towards the back of the car, “just climb in and phase your stuff into the trunk. Blackout tint is very useful”. Danny shakes his head but does just that. That was one thing he missed about there being no one in Amity who knew about him, getting to use his powers liberally around other people.
Daniel can’t help but glance around the fancy car which Vlad smiles pridefully about as he drives off, if Daniel was a more shallow person Vlad might have been able to obtain him with his wealth alone. Vlad still found it odd that his wealth didn’t even slightly coax the boy, especially when he was younger; children tend to be more narcissistic.
It doesn’t take long for the two to settle into silence, but both of them are surprised to find that it’s a rather comfortable kind of quite. Danny smiles a bit sadly as he looks out the window, spotting a couple making out while taking selfies. Sure, he’d had his romantic stints but dating a hero wasn’t really the safest thing for anyone to do, without even throwing in the whole secret double life thing; secrets and romance didn’t really coexist well. Though he wouldn’t say no if asked, he’d just never be the one to do the asking.
Vlad side-eyes him, easily catching the expression and what brought it about. “Love isn’t something that’s come easy to either of us, has it”, Vlad’s never really had more than the odd one-nighter or single date. He still wanted Maddie of course, he’d just sort of...given up. It’s not that he’d moved on though, just stopped trying. That was almost worse sometimes, but he’d set his mind on that being the past now.
Normally, Danny would make some joke about the guy wanting to get with his mother again, but the slight resigned sadness in Vlad’s voice didn’t really call for that. Plus, Vlad wasn’t exactly wrong, “hiding yourself doesn’t beget affections”. Vlad blinks a bit, caught slightly off guard, “I forget you’re not a little child sometimes”. Danny snorts at that, “what? You think only kids want to play the hero?”, waving his hand at Vlad, “besides, I’ve been more grown-up than most adults for years”.
“Yeah, that’ll happen when you insist on fighting every battle and willingly yank every single responsibility on yourself”, Vlad shakes his head, Daniel instantly taking up the mantle for town protector really did shine a light on how utterly special he was. Nearly everyone, especially kids, would use power for personal gain; Daniel did the exact opposite. It was something Vlad himself had never even considered doing, maybe if he had he’d be in a different place. But he does also understand why Daniel did what he did, “power gives people the ability to act. The access to all the options. In a way, I don’t think it’s possible to not grow up some when becoming able to do what others can not even fathom”. Vlad knew he had grown up some too, sure he’d already been an adult but to say he had been mature would be bullshit. He’d just grown cold and weathered, rather than protective and boisterous.
Danny shakes his head, “and you had the option to be good, to help. Yet you didn’t”. Danny’s a bit thrown that Vlad nods and doesn’t even argue about that. Danny’s almost worried that means that Vlad has accepted the role of villain, which while the man’s actions were definitely villainous, he didn’t expect or even want him to actually fall into the role in genuine. He was the bad guy for sure, and Danny did see him as his enemy and villain, but he was just a man abusing his powers and with a broken moral compass. Frowning more as Vlad responds, “I never once considered it”.
“Well, you could. You did once, you could again”, Danny’s got a suspicion that his actions towards the older halfa have been pushing him further into the role of villain. After all, future Vlad was free of good guy Danny. He was left alone, sure he also lost his powers and the chance at his mom; but maybe all he needed was a friendly, not combative, push in the right direction. Maybe this little trip was a backhanded way off asking for exactly that. He had pretty well asked to not be enemies for a while, a vacation from being foes. And it’s not like Danny couldn’t do that, sure Vlad has done way worse than his other foes, but he literally was their friend at least one day a year.
Vlad is flat out confused by that response, having never know himself to ever play a helpful role to anyone other than himself; especially not up to Daniel standards. Sure he’d fought beside Daniel before, but that had been part of a scheme, and he knew Daniel knew that now. Giving Daniel a quizzical glance, “when was this “once”? I know you would not make that up simply to make an honest man of me. There may be a lot between us, but lies aren’t one of them”. Vlad knows full well Daniel lies, and lies a lot, to pretty well everyone around him. But one thing all the tv shows get right, is that arch enemies know each other intimately well.
Danny knows Vlad’s right on that, there’s a good chance Vlad knows him better than his friends actually do; partly because of spying though. But this, this is something Danny never talks about; does a lot of thinking on it though. Chuckling at the man’s confusion, “it was after my family and friends died, and you lost your powers. I still remember your words, “ten years without ghost powers, gave me the chance to see what a fool I had been”, though I still wouldn’t have called you a “good guy”. Just willing to do the right thing, even when presented with the, far easier to do, bad option”.
Vlad coughs and does have a hard time not jerking the steering wheel, he has no knowledge of this but he knows Daniel wouldn’t make something like anyone dying up. “I think an explanation might be in order for that”, glancing at Daniel as he chuckles with a bit of a frown. He shakes his head, “I’m not sure it really can be. Time travel and literally cheating the timestream makes things complicated. Simply put, they were supposed to die when I was fourteen. You would have adopted me but in a misguided attempt to make me happy, you tore out my humanity. As you told me, “no more human emotions to drag you down””.
Danny pauses as Vlad just pulls over on the side of the road, “Daniel, that seems like an extreme plan even for me. While I’m not about to claim to possess having limits I won’t cross, that is a bit much”. Danny shrugs, “you were the one who told me what you did, it’s completely possible you lied or omitted stuff. One thing I know you omitted was how exactly my human half died. You separated my human from my ghost basically. And I the same to you. You then told me our ghost halfs fused into one but that was a lie, found out later that my ghost half had actually basically absorbed or consumed yours. Taking all your power and destroying Plasmius. And this is were I mention my ghost half went pretty well insane”. Vlad doesn’t even attempt to cover up his shock as Danny shakes his head and chuckles hollowly, “turns out removing someone humanity, which even ghosts have, effectively obliterates their morals and renders them callous”.
Vlad blinks a bit realising Daniel’s basically saying he became evil, that Vlad had actually successfully corrupted the young halfa once. At one point in time, he might have felt pride over that, but now he likes Daniel the way he is. He actually doesn’t really want to know what actually gave him the idea or even desire to tear out anyone’s humanity. “Callous is never something I’ve wanted you to be. Use your powers for personal gain and status, sure; but I never looked to make you cold or uncaring”, Vlad feels almost bad at Daniel seeming slightly surprised at that.
Danny turns to Vlad, “sometimes I wonder. But I can read honesty on you pretty damn easily. Can’t say I’m too surprised though, you may not be good but you’re not evil. Dan made that so clear”, shaking his head and closing his eyes, “meeting real evil makes it easy to tell when someone isn’t evil”.
Vlad’s genuinely startled that Daniel doesn’t actually view him as evil, “so you do not believe me a monster?”. Daniel shakes his head almost aggressively, “no, just morally corrupt and selfish”.
Danny’s torn between pride and guilt at the small smile he catches on the old man’s face. It’s officially obvious to Danny that he’s sort of pushed Vlad into the role of a villain. That the way Vlad thought he was viewed likely made him view himself that way, thus accepting more and more bad behaviour. Thinking that was what was expected of him, so why bother changing? Vlad turns back to him, “then what must this “Dan”, whom I’ve never heard of, have done for you to call him evil. When, with all I’ve done, you won’t deem me such?”.
Vlad still has the car parked, as he’s sure this man must have done something truly bad. Maybe crossed a line that even Vlad wouldn’t, and Vlad can only think of a handful he wouldn’t cross. “Dan is short for Danny or Daniel. Dan Phantom. He’s what became of that callous full ghost me. I met him ten years after the whole humanity torn out thing, by time travelling into the future. See the Observants wanted me destroyed before my family and whatnot died, so that me getting my humanity torn out would never happen. Had to flee into the future to avoid that”. Now Vlad is both impressed and shocked, though he hides it well, “they only get involved in rather extreme things. They’ve never even meddled with my affairs”.
Danny nods, “indeed and Dan earned it. Their description of him, as I was told, was “the most evil and powerful ghost to ever exist”. And he lived up to that, by killing off nearly all of humanity and ghosts, destroying every city and lair, and then going back in time to make sure my family and friends died so I would become him. Eventually, he would have killed and destroyed everything”.
Vlad stares at him, he knew full well Daniel was more than just powerful but for him to cross that line, one that Vlad himself wouldn’t even consider getting close to, was one part baffling and one part horrifying. Add in mortifying, since Vlad was, in a sense, responsible. He more than just corrupted Daniel, he made a literal monster.
Vlad opts to just drive, focusing on the road rather than his brain trying to picture Daniel actually killing someone. But then blinking with genuine worry at realising Daniel probably did witness himself killing, “to know you could be capable of that and actually witnessing it, must have been more than just unpleasant”. Daniel nods, “to say traumatising would be putting it mildly. But the warning and message was damn clear, plus I made an amazing friend out of ClockWork due to it”. Vlad can’t help but smirk at that, he did wonder exactly how Daniel had met the enigmatic time ghost. Vlad’s rather glad life hasn’t tried to teach him “lessons” in such a manner, but judging by how he’s ended up, he probably could have used them. Shaking his head a bit sadly, “well, at least that unpleasant “message” is behind you. You being good to a fault, unbearably so at times, makes much more sense”.
Danny sighs, honestly wishing it actually was behind him, “Dan exists outside of time and could very well escape his prison and show up, in the here and now. I couldn’t beat him last time and he couldn’t kill me then. Now he could, and would”. Vlad jerks the wheel a bit, making his displeasure and worry very palpable to Danny before he even responds, “if you didn’t defeat him, then how? And I don’t want the world destroyed, arch enemies or not, I would help you fight him”. Danny already knows that but he also knows Vlad is the weaker halfa, “ClockWork cheated and it’s my fight to fight”.
“You are a self-sacrificial idiot”
“We’ve all got our downfalls. Mine gets me hurt a lot, yours get others hurt. I think I prefer mine”, Danny doesn’t care what Vlad thinks, what he does hurts people; including people Vlad doesn’t want to get hurt.
The two settle back into silence, not quite as comfortable but more in each other's bubbles. Until Vlad turns the car intangible and invisible, careening off into some trees. Danny raises an eyebrow, “so this is a sneaky place is it? Guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Weird trees though”. Vlad thought the same when he first spotted the faintly glowing trees, it’s why he checked this place out. And asking around the nearby town afterwards had revealed that no one else could see the glow; it seemed to be a ghost thing. Vlad nods, “closer to restricted than sneaky. Restricted in a ghosts only kind of way, half ghosts included”.
“Well, that explains why you invited me”, Danny gives a goofy grin to show he’s making a bit of a joke. He knew full well that Vlad didn’t hate him, or even dislike him. If it wasn’t for the enemies thing, and Vlad’s general behaviour, they’d probably be friends. Danny can’t even say he hates Vlad, though dislike is a bit of an understatement. Well, at least it was. Vlad could very well have invited any ghost, but it’s pretty obvious to Danny that Vlad views them beneath him or as lackies. Plus, Vlad wasn’t exactly well-liked by any ghost; even the ones that worked for him. His lack of getting invited to any Christmas truce parties made that extremely obvious. No friends in the ghost zone and no friends in the human realm, Danny can’t help but find that a lonely thing.
“I never do anything with such simple reason, Daniel. As you know”, Vlad can tell by Daniels smirk that he does indeed know. Vlad Parks the car far enough away to not disturb the place, he doesn’t even have to tell Daniel to get out; as both of them phase out the doors, neither bothering with actually opening them. That’s one thing he has noticed as he’d watched Daniel, he’s incredibly liberal and comfortable with his powers. They really are part of him as a person, not just tools like they are for Vlad. If Vlad’s honest, Daniel is much more of a ghost that he is. And seeing that made him think, think about how he viewed himself as a halfa. Realising he didn’t really see himself as half ghost, rather a human with ghost powers at his disposal.
Vlad walks through the barrier and pushes aside some of the tall grass, thoroughly amused at Daniel’s awareness of the barrier and then his barely hidden wonder.
Danny speaks as he takes in the black rock hot springs, neon green water that fizzes with the steam coming off a pale green and purple. Watching the colours swirl together, “wow Vlad, you aren’t capable of basic are you?”. Even if he’s bugging the guy, the place is pretty and smells nice. However, swimming trunks was not something he packed; and you can’t really do hot springs without actually getting in. Vlad apparently knew he wouldn’t though, as a pair identical to the ones he already owns smacks him in the face. Turning his head to Vlad and not even bothering to remove the offending garment, “see this, this is why you get called a creep”.
Danny’s at first very concerned that Vlad doesn’t even appear to be holding his own swimwear, but then shakes his head, “there’s no way swim trunks are comfortable under dress pants”. Vlad shrugs as he tosses his clothing over a tree branch. Danny shakes his head before invisibly slipping behind a tree to change. Sticking his head back around, he can’t help but smirk and raise an eyebrow at Vlad; who’s sitting in the water with his head and arms laying on the edge, eyes closed and blatantly relaxed. Danny tries to think of any time he’s actually seen the prideful man not stiff or without proper posture. At one time Danny would have thought it was just part of the rich act or his pride, but he knew now that it was part of Vlad’s self-worth.
Dipping his fingers in and promptly realising why Vlad, or any ghost, would want to come here. It has an intensely relaxing and soothing feel, the thickness was like that of liquified comfy blankets, combined with the smell of lavender and eucalyptus. Slipping in as he decides it’s definitely safe to do so, quickly feeling any stiffness or sore bruising pretty well disappearing, “healing springs? That’s a hell of a find Vladdie”. It was like aromatherapy combined with fine bath oils, all contained in a stone hot tub.
Vlad nods, he pretty well lounged around here like a cat for well over a month when he first found it. Why wouldn’t he? He didn’t exactly have anywhere to go or anyone to see. Even after that he rarely stayed away long, until the pull of wealth and seeing Maddie’s name in a paper. “This place was basically my haunt back in the day, you can see why. No one else really comes here though and while ghosts are quite content with their solitary lairs, I’m more of a human”.
Danny definitely gets why, though it’s clear this place wasn’t ever anyone’s lair. Which he does find kind of odd with how nice it is, “what does no ghost know of this? And never would have taken you for speeding you time or days lounging. Now fencing I could see”. Vlad laughs lightly, “to ghosts it’s just like a regular hot tub, like the ones in the ghost zone. This effect is a halfa thing and what do you take me for? Lex Luther?”. Danny makes a mock shocked expression, “did you just make a genuine joke? And you’re hardly different. Filthy rich philanthropist, owning massive corporations, intelligent, scheming, overly well dressed, engineering gadgets. And that’s not even mentioning being the arch enemy of an overpowered golden boy who lives the double life of an average jo; who’s two forms look borderline identical. Seriously, people are blind”.
Vlad chuckles, Daniel’s got a point there, “I’m not powerless though. And world domination is not in any of my playbooks. Though yeah, it’s rather absurd none have figured you out. But even I didn’t consider Phantom being a halfa when we first met, and I am one. Even with the near identical look and showing up at the same time”. Daniel nods but scrunches up his eyebrows, as he submerges everything but his neck and head, which he leans back against the stone, “like I said, you’re not really evil and I guess. You said you were more of a human earlier, do you not really view yourself half and half?”.
“Never did. My powers were, and are, just tools at my disposal. Like owning a gun, just better”, Danny’s a little thrown by that, a gun was something separate for your own body. It didn’t change your genetics and didn’t give you a new body. To Danny, seeing himself as equally both was just obvious. “Well, that’s something else we differ on. Half and half is what I am. My powers are simply me, not tools. Phantoms me, not some anonymous mask I can wear. Though I guess my lifestyle does favour my more ghostly activities”.
Now it’s Vlad’s turn to be a bit surprised, “could be because you’ve basically grown up this way. I already had life figured out and was grown, this threw a wrench in everything. But I can say leaning more ghost makes very little sense to me, you were still human first”. Vlad’s not sure what to make of Daniel’s loose shrug, “I viewed my self equal parts from the beginning really. Though my life didn’t start being more ghostly until I plopped myself into the role of Amity’s protector/ghost fighter. What I do is simply what I’m meant to do, just so happens to be a more ghost thing to do”, shrugging again, “you got a wrench, I got gift wrapped purpose”.
“I guess you were meant to be a halfa, I just stumbled on it”, Danny gets why Vlad’s frowning a bit, Danny viewing himself as both is pretty well proof of how comfortable and ok with what he is, that he is. Vlad’s lack of that shows he’s really not, he’s used to it rather than content with it. And Danny’s seen how Vlad would really be better off without it, Danny knows that he personally wouldn’t be. But he does chuckle a little, “I’m the one who stumbled on it, literally. You face planted”. Vlad shoves Danny’s head into the water, “can you ever resist a death joke?”.
Danny just goes with it and lays down under the water, “nope. It’s my hero trope”, chuckling at the confusion on Vlad’s face, “what? You can’t breathe underwater? Or have you just never tried”. Flat out laughing at Vlad scrunching up his eyebrows, making it very clear that he didn’t even know this was possible. Laughing even more as Vlad just ducks under and goes to sit on the bottom of one of the deeper sections.
Vlad’s not sure if he’s more impressed or annoyed that Daniel knew something about being a halfa that he did not, Vlad was supposed to be the experienced teacher here, well if Daniel had ever let him teach anyway. Rolling his eyes at Daniel, “why would I ever intentionally try something like this? We have lungs, this shouldn’t work”. Vlad’s not sure what about that is so funny to Daniel, “we’re literal schrodingers boys! Dead and alive! Impossible by our very nature!”. Vlad blinks, have never really thought of it that way at all, “well then”.
Danny underwater stargazes while Vlad contemplates just what other weirdness they could be capable of, and just how many Daniel had discovered. Both eventually falling asleep.
Danny’s not exactly surprised he’s the first to wake up, getting out of the water and stretching. Looking down at his chest to promptly realise that the water didn’t just have a healing feeling, as all the bruising on his chest is gone way quicker than it should have. “Huh, well this could come in very handy next time I get mauled by Zone knows what... or who”, chuckling before zipping back to Vlad’s car and phasing out some of his snacks.
And munching on cheezies is how Vlad finds him, when he pokes his head back out of the water. “Well, your tastes sure haven’t grown up. I’d offer up some octopops but I doubt you’d appreciate them”. Judging by Daniel’s confusion Vlad’s guess is quite right. Though Vlad does relent and eat some of the offered fake cheese food, much to Daniel’s amusement.
The two spend most of the day in the hot spring again, Danny fully gets how someone, or some halfa really, could just stay here. It’s lazy, comfortable and all around pleasant; it’s clear that affect it both physical and mental. And it’s not hard to admit that Danny really did and does need a break from the near constant action of his daily life. Even if he knows full well he’d eventually get antsy and paranoid if he stayed too long, he’s a protector by nature and nothing about this protected anyone.
Tilting his head back and snuggling into the grove of one of the rocks, “that still doesn’t beat flying a spaceship”. Vlad shakes his head, “you’re practically insulting yourself but not just going to university already”. Danny simply shrugs, higher education was a bit of a status symbol so Danny won’t claim to be surprised that Vlad holds value in it, “eh, I’ve got more important things to do than get some degree or human job. Phantom comes first, and jobs don’t really care for someone who runs off constantly or is bandaged up eighty percent of the time”.
At one point Vlad would have chalked Daniel’s disregard for education up to being a child, but he wasn’t anymore and he was mature beyond his years. Vlad also knows this disregard doesn’t actually help him in life, he’s seen how unhappy and unpleasant the Fenton parents are over it; and he knows Daniel’s aware of it too. “Your family mourns over that, you know”, Daniel’s slow nod only further shows he's aware of it.
The two sat silent for a while, Danny kicking lazily at the water finding it hard to really feel sad about much of anything here. The effect was soothing but people are meant to feel bad emotions sometimes, officially making him decide that he wouldn’t want to just stay here prolongedly. Flicking his eyes back over the Vlad as he talks, “my bridge to her, to Maddie, is pretty well butchered, isn’t it?”. Danny’s a bit shocked, wondering if Vlad’s really even considering letting go of her. “Oh yeah, though mine might be too. Too many lies and one too many let downs”, Vlad’s frown makes it clear he hasn’t really let go.
“That’s something I’d rather not have in common. Suffering from similar strife. But I guess that’s the past”, Vlad can tell that Daniel has little to no intention of telling his family. Resting his elbows on his knees, “you’re alone in Amity now, aren’t you?”. Daniel simply shrugs, “pretty well yeah, they’ll be back of course”.
“Don’t let yourself be alone, you won’t like where you end up”, Danny looks at Vlad curiously, with a hint of sadness. All his comments about Vlad being a lonely man were supposed to just be jokes, clearly, they were a little too true. “Being close to a hero is a dangerous thing, ain’t fair to drag other people into my life. So I’ll content myself with those who know”.
Vlad points at him, “eventually they’ll be gone. I know you’re aware of halfa life spans”. Vlad’s also pretty sure it’s far more dangerous to be close to the stories “villain”, regardless of how evil or not the “hero” thought them to be. “You mean half-life spans? Yes. But there’s no way other people aren’t going to find out accidentally over the years”, sure probability is on Daniel’s side here but Vlad’s far more aware of the ineptitude of people, especially normal people. “If you’re not around anyone then no one likely will”, that’s one thing Vlad will give Daniel, the boy is terrifyingly good at keeping his secrets.
Danny hates that he’s kind of got a point on that, the only person who’s found out without actually witnessing his accident is Jazz; and she only knows because she wouldn’t stop hounding him. No reason for someone who’s not already close to him to do that. Though Danny scrunches his eyebrows, “I’m not sure why you care. It’s not like they just recently left”.
“I do care about you Daniel, I just had no reason to voice it before. You figure out things on your own well enough but this time I can’t be assured you will. Mentoring you was something I was going to do, whether we wound up friend or foe”, Danny’s not quite sure what to make of that. Vlad trying to give him “advice” wasn’t out of the norm, heck it was commonplace. But for it to not be rather bad or “villainous” advice, was a bit strange. Everyone has their moments he guesses, but what really gets him is Vlad sounding like he needs to say this now, “why now then? You very well could have shown up on my doorstep two years ago”. Danny kind of wishes he had, because this, this screams making amends now and turning over a new leaf maybe. Sure, it’s entirely possible Vlad might just go back to his ways after they get back, but he doesn’t think Vlad could possibly be that cold. Cold enough to disregard friendly bonding, especially with the reinforcement of being the only members of an entire species. Even if there’s also Dani, but she was a fair bit different from them. Never fully human, no traditional family, and pretty well free. And genetically she wasn’t a full person, none the less a full halfa; she was her own unique thing. Like Danny, she could be content being a one and only, Vlad clearly couldn’t.
Danny gets jolted out of his thoughts by Vlad, “I’m dying, Daniel. Messed up in the lab, messed up my bodies ectoplasm production. Permanently corrupted it, like I’ve sort of corrupted everything else”. Danny’s not sure what to say for a couple of seconds, Vlad must have more than just messed up to make something immortal no longer so. Vlad confirms that as he continues speaking, “us halfas, our ectoplasm and blood’s pretty unique. Can’t be truly replicated and doesn’t occur naturally”. Danny, speaking quietly, “I’d guess that’s why you wanted to come here, but the “permanent” tells me you knew this wouldn’t fix you”. Vlad’s nod is all the confirmation he needs, and that makes Danny realise this wasn’t him making amends, but rather him making peace to the only person who would actually hear it. Danny’s no fool, his mom wouldn’t have even considered talking like they’ve been and really, what would he have to say to her? He’d have to reveal himself for her to really understand, making that the focus of discussion and risking Danny’s secret too. Even if they were archenemies, there was an inherent respect for secret identities and Danny knows Vlad wouldn’t risk his happiness or safety in such a manner.
Like usual Daniel knows Vlad’s ways well, though Vlad doesn't really plan to admit that he didn’t look very hard to fix himself. After he’d give up or lost so much, death was a rather easy escape to accept. There was a sort of freedom to death after all, “I guess I didn’t exactly have any intention of leaving here. Couldn’t think of a more comfortable way to go”. No fights, no schemes, no business ventures, no mansion walls or fancy suits telling the tale of his, probably bad, life choices. Instead just healing waters to ease his mind and aged body, and soothing scents to ease his bruised and battered heart.
“So...you wanted a death buddy. That’s beyond depressing, Vladdie. And yet, oddly comical”, of course, Danny will stick around however long at this point, for Vlad’s final and permanent vacation. Though he’s by no means pleased or happy about this, but this place makes the sadness and loss of it so much less pungent. And the irony of two half-dead guys chilling in a neon green hot spring while one slowly becomes more dead, adds an air of humour; especially to a guy who’s a perpetual walking dead joke.
But then an idea strikes him as he looks curiously at his own veins, flicking his eyes up to the peaceful man with his eyes closed and the hint of a smile. He’s clearly accepted this, so Danny’s not sure if voicing his idea is a good thing. But Danny will be damned if he doesn’t at least attempt to save pretty well everyone, and that right there is one of his faults, “you could, just get exchange transfusions from me. I am a universal donor after all, if you exclude having ectoplasm, but that’s half the point here. Sure, it’d have to be a constant thing if your brutalisation of your body is so permanent”.
“That, that would probably work actually, and you really would do that, wouldn’t you? But I’m going to have to decline. I’ve put too many complications into your life already”, Vlad probably would have stumbled onto this idea himself, if he had bothered. But he was just done, done with all the wanting and taking from everyone. It just hurt him more, and them too; though he didn’t care about that nearly as much. Vlad can easily read the disappointment and determination, overshadowed by understanding, on Daniel’s face. If anyone could understand not wanting to burden someone else, it was the too-heroic-for-his-own-damn-good halfa. “Why’d you have to wait till now to follow me in being a self-sacrificial idiot”, Vlad’s not really being self-sacrificial, and he’s sure Daniel knows that. This, like everything else he’s ever done, is selfish. But he knows Daniel will somehow find a way to blame himself if he doesn’t make that clear, “it’s more that I’ve just given up. On all of it”.
“Well, I don’t do giving up”, and the Vlad Danny meet years ago didn’t give up either. But Danny knows how time can change you or beat you down, better than most do. He’s seen himself break after all, and Vlad tried to help him in his twisted and rather villainous way. Vlad didn’t exactly tend to come up with plans that actually helped people. But doing exactly that was a large part of Danny’s life, so he’ll save this damn frootloop. Though Danny doesn’t expect this will make Vlad any better of a person, maybe less actively a villain, but still morally corrupt.
No one says anything for a bit until Daniel pokes Vlad in the arm, “how about you do it anyway, come to stay in Amity, see if I can show you something new”. Vlad’s not sure whether to curse or appreciate Daniel’s determination and hero-complex. Vlad’s pretty sure he’ll wind up abusing this, or maybe he won’t; he doesn’t know. Though this does give Daniel something to lord over his head, even if he knows Daniel hasn’t and wouldn’t even consider that. He’ll literally need Daniel to survive, the ways that could be abused is utterly insane. And Vlad’s not really sure he even wants the surviving part.
The two stare at each other for a while, Danny’s got determination in spades and will damn well take on every extra “complication”, and if he has to bore mental holes through Vlad’s head to prove it, he damn well will. Vlad sighs, “alright Daniel. You always know the right things to say nowadays don’t you?”. Danny only smiles loosely at the burnt out man heading to a not so burnt out future. Second chances, it would seem, were a key component to life; or half-life in this case.
End.
