Shuffle your on-repeat playlist and list the first 10 songs that play, then tag 10 people.
Thank you @letraspal and @bookish-bogwitch for the tags!
I decided to do my running playlist because it contains (statistically speaking) my most played songs, and yet doesn't at all represent my music taste. Or, to paraphrase Des Linden when asked what she listened to while training to set the 50K record: I thought I was a Hall & Oates fan, but Spotify tells me I'm in the top 1% of Taylor Swift listeners.
Tumblr media
"Black Velvet" - fucking beat that, peeps. I bet you no one will admit to listening to Alannah Myles in 2024.
"Love the Way You Lie" - my ex and I used to duet this one while decorating the Christmas tree.
"I See You Baby" - back when I lived in Glasgow and used to club and take a shit ton of drugs, this was *the* song.
"Empire State of Mind" - if I'm 7+ miles into a run in the city and this song comes on, I *will* burst into tears in public.
"Diamonds and Rust" - my mom, sister and I have declared this the most melodramatic song ever. One day I will work it into a wolfstar because: "Well, I'll be damned / Here comes your ghost again / But that's not unusual / It's just that the moon is full / And you happened to call." (It's about Bob Dylan, btw.)
"Bizarre Love Triangle" - the KEXP (Seattle independent radio station) DJ, John Richards, once said, if he's live DJ-ing and he puts "Bizarre Love Triangle" on and people don't dance, then he knows it's a hopeless audience. Pure fact right there.
Now tags! @artsyunderstudy @hihimissamericanbi @burningaurora @basiatlu @hearteyesmoony @amethystheart2421 @you-remind-me-of-the-babe @cutestkilla @raenestee @shrekgogurt (Apologies if you've already done this and I missed it. Also, feel free to ignore.)

From Bright Eyes,
Lovers Turn To Monsters
"and I want a place to hang out,
Where record players - play out
and there's a thousand movies rented
For a thousand hours with her"
From Modest Mouse,
A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy
"So you let your hair down
And you let the name's fly
Stupid"
These tracks have sharp edges that create a sincere agony, a true-to-the-sound-of-anxiety. There is nothing feint about these feelings, they are the desperate crawl out and away from the bitter break of loneliness. The vocals are loud and in your face. These songs force confrontations between the self, your limits to scream and how well you remember the stories you tell yourself. You have lived these moments, these songs have seen you cry.
Lovers Turn To Monsters is a track I found on YouTube while looking around for some Neutral Milk Hotel rarities. This track is the 12th release of a project called, "Insound Tour Support." I have not found the entire project catalog. I found that, "Insound Tour Support 2.0" was produced by KEXP in Seattle. I have thoughts on KEXP, I will share those soon. I supposed that this project was like, "Live From Nowhere Near You." I will review songs off that project - it contains some of the best and unreleased songs from some of my favorite artists. I am not sure what or when this tour support was released or where the whole project can be found. There are some tracks uploaded on YouTube, along with this one. The music is out there and I will review the other uploads. The intensity of this track is important to me, the vocal performance is unmatched to any other artist and this song breaks through barriers that I hadn't known from Conor Oberst. A genuine moment of vulnerability was captured in this piece of art, you can hear the exact part the vocal performance confesses a profound sadness and agony to you.
"A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy" is a unique track from Modest Mouse. It is another angle for us to experience, "Edit The Sad Parts." There are two version of, " A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy" and of, "Edit the Sad Parts." For both songs there is a live and studio version, I listen to both interchangeably some days I crave the treble of the guitar that comes from the live performance of either song. There is a sinister sound to the intro of, "A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy" an intro that brings to my mind a painful sensation of something sharp rubbed against the surface of your body, of your shape, your person, your identity. There is a feeling of something hurt by that guitar. The verse and the instrumental sound like a prototype for "Edit The Sad Parts."
Spoilers ahead, I recommend listening to these tracks in their entirety before reading my closing statement.
Okay. The reason I paired these tracks together was the structures of the songs are similar. They emit this sincere feeling of anxiety, and the depression that comes from a self-actualization of self-imposed fear. The worst and most vicious at times. The songs have vulnerable verses and ask the listener to forgive them in the form of a struggling instrumental that evolves into a pressing and strong feeling of hope.
There weren't any versions of "Lovers Turned To Monsters" uploaded to be included in this post. There are uploads on YouTube. This is the live version of, "A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy."

Say She She - NORMA (Live on KEXP)
“NORMA” is an urgent call to action to support the protection of women’s rights and preserving the right to choose.  100% of the sales on Bandcamp will continue to be donated to NARAL: Pro-choice America.
“NORMA” was written and recorded just days after the story broke about the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn decades-old abortion rights enshrined by the law. With collective backgrounds working in education, speechwriting and nonprofit, the three female frontwomen of Say She She - Piya, Nya and Sabrina - have not shied away from their intention to use their voices to share important messages.
The band's decision to name the song after Norma Mccorvey aka Jane Roe  - who the law was named after - wasn't an easy one.  Norma’s story was complicated and controversial.  After fighting vehemently for years in support of the law to protect women’s right to chose she changed position a number of times - finally admitting on her deathbed that she had only done so in exchange for payments from an ultra conservative evangelical movement in a bid to undermine the law, but that she had in her heart always supported a woman's right to choose.  Say She She contemplated this as an example of how the vested interests of the ultra religious and conservative patriarchy pose a corrupting and unyielding threat not to be met with complacency. https://shorefire.com/releases/entry/say-she-she-release-norma-protest-anthem-written-in-response-to-overturning-of-roe-v-wade

tag people you would like to get to know better
Thank you to both @god-of-this-new-blog and @quicktimeeventfull for tagging me! Not only am I answering the questions, but also I'm adding some gratuitous gifs because I'm extra like that.
1. Three Ships
L/Misa from Death Note, obviously. Right now I'm also obsessed with Eve/Villanelle from Killing Eve, though I've never written for them because I'm intimidated by all the amazing fics already out there. And finally, Fleabag/Hot Priest from Fleabag, yes I'm still not over them.
Here is a Villaneve gif because I love them.
Tumblr media
2. First Ever Ship
Okay to be honest it was Spuffy (Spike/Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) back when I was like 13, and I still ship them. Spike was one of my first fictional crushes ever and I never recovered. I don't care if he's like 60 now, James Marsters can GET IT.
Tumblr media
3. Last Song
"Mary Magdalene" by FKA Twigs, I've been listening to nothing but her all day. She's my dream woman tbh. Go watch her KEXP performance of "Two Weeks" on Youtube and tell me you're not in love with her.
4. Last Movie
Nope. It was my least favorite Jordan Peele movie I've seen so far, but that's just a testament to how much I loved Get Out and Us. It was still an okay movie.
5. Currently Reading
Right now, I'm reading Interview with the Vampire and re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire.
6. Currently Watching
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, tbh it's very good research for writing Misa, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. Amazing show. Also 30% of the reason I watch is because Rachel Bloom is hot.
Tumblr media
7. Currently Consuming
Sushi from the grocery store and salt n vinegar chips and a hard cider. Treating myself.
8. Currently Craving
Physical touch tbh. I'm living far away from my partner and best friends for work reasons for a bit, so no one has touched me in weeks. I want a HUG. I want CUDDLES. I want someone to LIE DIRECTLY ON TOP OF ME AND SQUISH MY SOUL BACK INTO MY BODY. I want to get RAILED.
9. Tagging
@dillyfirestarter @litterateur97 @herembers @iamredby @aquaflora17 @rottentiger-art @cherrygirl-28 @dirt-apple-productions @redcrewmate

@batmantaking-hobbits2gallifrey and @theamiableanachronism both tagged me to post ten songs from my on repeat playlist, but I’m an inveterate whole-album-all-the-way-through listener and also I don’t listen to music in a way that has easily trackable stats, THEREFORE I am combining that tag with the one from @lilaccatholic (anna also tagged me in this one!) and just posting ten songs which I like or listen to a lot. this is my best guess for most played, and I tried to be honest and convey that I mainly listen to three artists these days:
"All Too Well (Ten Minute Version)", Taylor Swift yeah it's been over a year but it's still The Moment
"Renegade", Taylor Swift and Big Red Machine always relevant, always brilliant
"Safe and Sound", Taylor Swift feat. Joy Williams & John Paul White I've had this on repeat since I reread The Hunger Games in August and I'm overjoyed by the abounding grace of the new one
"Chinese Satellite", Phoebe Bridgers for when I'm experiencing a longing bigger than my body and I don't know what to do with it (i.e. every day)
"Waiting Room" (live on KEXP), Phoebe Bridgers I'm obsessed with how this is a song all about how you think you're gonna wait forever for someone to turn around and love you, but then it repeats "I know it's for the better" until you can actually start to believe it
"Killer" (with Noah and Abby Gundersen), Phoebe Bridgers I love a male-female duet. always have always will. and the piano on this version is so good
"Good Enough", Maisie Peters 'cause I used to think that if I tried my best I'd always win????? people don't leave people if they really are in love?????? thought I was the way home but I was an obstacle to move??!??!???!!??
"Love Him I Don’t", Maisie Peters everyone else can love you but I WON'T!!!!!!
"Blonde", Maisie Peters sometimes you just gotta scream-sing the f-bomb twenty times in a row alone in your car
"Song to the Siren", Rose Betts a shout-out to how derailed my listening habits have been by Lockwood & Co. this song would have been up my alley at any time, but it rules my life now.

I don't know if you're still doing playlist recommendations, but if you are, do you have any recommendations for songs to listen to when you're feeling sort of paralysed? When your life feels as if it's stalled, and you can't really think about the future without panicking.
I've mostly been listening to Slint and Shostakovich but am terrible at finding new music.
this is gonna sound ridiculous but bear with me and try it: i always thought the strokes album is this it was good for life transitions. come to think of actually room on fire too... what you are describing is not really a life transition... but it sounds like you kind of need a life transition... so maybe this will help?
i know this is definitely insane but the album deep trip by destruction unit has brought me a lot of peace. i sort of think of this album as "carrying the burning sword" - the sword is really heavy... but carrying it is something to do
a great way to find new music is by listening to independent radio - i listen to KEXP almost every day, you can stream online here

It's Okay to Be So Turbo: Get Kinetic with Amyl and the Sniffers
Amyl and the Sniffers is one of the greatest punk bands of all time. Check out this new live set at KEXP.
youtube
We feature their songs all over our website, including on our Kinetic Cognitive Style page. Amy is so wonderfully Kinetic.
"It’s okay to be so turbo." --Amy Taylor
"ADHD or what I prefer to call Kinetic Cognitive Style (KCS) is another good example. (Nick Walker coined this alternative term.) The name ADHD implies that Kinetics like me have a deficit of attention, which could be the case as seen from a certain perspective. On the other hand, a better, more invariantly consistent perspective is that Kinetics distribute their attention differently. New research seems to point out that KCS was present at least as far back as the days in which humans lived in hunter-gatherer societies. In a sense, being a Kinetic in the days that humans were nomads would have been a great advantage. As hunters they would have noticed any changes in their surroundings more easily, and they would have been more active and ready for the hunt. In modern society it is seen as a disorder, but this again is more of a value judgment than a scientific fact." Bias: From Normalization to Neurodiversity – Neurodivergencia Latina
"Guided by Angels" is our community anthem for KCS/ADHD.
youtube
Guided by angels But they're not heavenly They're on my body And they guide me heavenly The angels guide me heavenly, heavenly Energy, good energy and bad energy I've got plenty of energy It's my currency I spend, protect my energy, currency Guided by Angels by Amyl and the Sniffers

I love your list of 5 things that make you happy! I know some of your favorite books, but what are your favorite movies and music?
Funny you should ask about music. When I made that post about Jonathan Carroll and how he hand wrote the first page to one of his books for me, the lead singer / songwriter of the band Cloud Cult hand wrote the lyrics to one of his songs for me too!
Tumblr media
I discovered the music of Cloud Cult back in 2006. I heard the KEXP Song of the Day "Take Your Medicine" and it blew my mind! It was a religious experience for me. And I've been a huge fan ever since. I am quoted in the book "Chasing the Light: The Cloud Cult Story" on page 109 about that song.
Tumblr media
I've attended all of their Los Angeles shows since 2006. I even flew up to Minneapolis just to hear them play with the Minnesota Orchestra back in April 2018.
Something special Cloud Cult does during their shows, they have two artists on stage who are painting during the performances. As an audience member enjoying the music, we also get to watch these two paintings take shape during the show. It's a pretty spectacular experience. At the end of the show they raffle the paintings to the highest bidder. I have two of them.
Tumblr media
But to continue answering your question about favorite music, since 2005 Last.fm has tracked most of the music I have been listening to. These are the artists I've listened to the most since 2005.
Tumblr media
As for movies... of course, I am a child of Star Wars. I saw the original in the theater back in 1977 when I was 7 years old. I felt a strong pull towards the Jedi. Star Wars (and Yoda) are probably my #1 influence for becoming a Buddhist. (Followed by the influence of Beat writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Who led me to Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, and Alan Watts.)
And I have a very strong nostalgia for 1970s sci-fi like Logan’s Run and all the Planet of the Apes movies. And Disney’s The Black Hole released in 1979 (the children's version of 2001: A Space Odyssey).
And my #1 favorite movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey directed by Stanley Kubrick who also did The Shining (totally an art film, and NOT a horror movie).
But with Twin Peaks I fell in love with David Lynch and everything he does. He is my #1 favorite director. Each of his movies is a brilliant delight to uncover.
Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain is an amazing work of science, philosophy, spirituality, science fiction, and history. His movie Mother! is also fantastic (about God/Javier Bardem and Mother Earth/Jennifer Lawrence). Darren is probably in my Top 5 filmmakers.
Let me think: David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Darren Aronofsky. Hmm... which director should come next? Francis Ford Coppola? Alfred Hitchcock? Steven Spielberg?
But for more lighthearted fare, I adore The Thin Man movies. I love William Powell and Myrna Loy. And also Cary Grant. Pre-WWII movies are my comfort movies. An escape. Safe and comfortable. I've watched a lot of them since 2016.

Hello!!! I was wondering if you have any favorite live performances by AURORA? Mine are the Nidarosdomen Christmas concert, the Japan concert from the end of 2020, the Christine radiofestival performance in 2020, and the NPR performance from way back in 2016 :) i just love those ones so much, the quarantine concert too
Hi, sweet warrior! Ow goodness, it's a good question, thank you a lot, and your assortment of favourite performances is gorgeous, actually. each of them have very strong numbers vocals-wise and also nice acoustic arrangements, what a taste you have!
I defo go with Nidarosdomen Christmas concert (church, orchestra, AURORA, what else to wish for, especially when Fredrik kicked off his best solo during My Universe), the Japan concert from the end of 2020 (acoustic renditions felt fresh), and Somewhere Else Festival 2020 (lights! concept!) as well!
Adding to this my all-time fave live Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves 2018 (aka the first KEXP: the best sound, the best Gentle Earthquakes, the best Forgotten Love, Vetle doing his magic all overon synths), "A Touch of the Divine" (ART), HAIK (the forest gig is her element + that choir on The Seed lifted the song to another level + Silja is amazing), Live at St Michaelis Church / Reeperbahn Festival Hamburg (no professional recordings but chills all over from A Different Kind of Human alone), VIERLIVE live stream with Bergen Philarmonic Orchestra (she has grown so incredibly much as a vocalist since Nidarosdomen), COP26 (a huge portion of love here goes to Fredrik Svabø), and NRK P3 September last year (Magnus is the best backing vocalist for her confirmed)!
Hope you'll have a day full of love and light, warrior!

Formed back in 2020, Austin-based shoegazers DAIISTAR (pronounced Day-Star) — Alex Capistran (vocals, guitar), Nick Cornetti (drums), Misti Hamrick (bass) and Derek Strahan (keys) — have established a narcotic blend of noise and melody that draws from the neo-psychedelic era of the 80s and 90s, but modernizes it with modulating synths, heavy guitars, bouncing bass lines and spiraling hooks.  The Austin shoegeazer outfit’s Alex Maas-produced full-length debut, last year’s GoodTime featured the fuzzy The Jesus and Mary Chain-meets- Crocodiles-like “Parallel” and revealed a band that paid a remarkable amount of attention to craft with a penchant for catchy hooks. The band supported the album touring across North America with The Black Angels, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, and included festival circuit stops at Levitation, Desert Daze, SXSW, Freak Out, Treefort, as well as a KEXP session.  The Austin shoegazers are currently on a European tour. Those tour dates are below. But they’ll be releasing the “Clear”/”Velvet Reality (Sonic Boom ” Remix 7 inch through Fuzz Club. Slated for a May 10, 2024 release, the 7 inch will feature “Clear,” a previously unreleased song recored during the GoodTime sessions. “Clear” is a reverb-drenched bliss bomb featuring shimmering synths, Capistran’s dreamily delivered falsetto paired with a slow-burning groove. The song, to me at least, brings road trips on glorious, sunny afternoons — full of hope, possibility, life-altering adventures and laughs.  DAIISTAR’s Alex Capistran (guitar/vocals) explained that “the idea behind ‘Clear’ was to write the perfect song for a perfect day. A song that comes to mind on a warm and sunny afternoon; inspiring thoughts of attainable bliss and encouraging you to dream up something nice for your future self.” Album track “Velvet Reality,” closes out GoodTime with a dreamy, washed-out haze. Spacemen 3 co-founder Pete Kember, a.k.a. Sonic Boom gives “Velvet Reality” the remix treatment, further deconstructing the song by making it even more ethereal and hazier than its original while also giving the oscillating and fluttering synths more of an emphasis. The result is an ethereal and narcoleptic bit of shoegaze seemingly informed by doo wop. Favorite Music of 2023
Empire State Bastard - Rivers of Heresy The love child of Simon Neil (Biffy Clyro) and Mike Vennart (Oceansize) is a truly epic metal monstrosity.  I'd heard bits and pieces of it that Mike doled out over the years via his Patreon and never thought a fully realized product would see the light of day.  Well, they did it, and they got Dave Lombardo to bash the skins.  That should tell you everything you need to know about this masterpiece. Empire State Bastard - The Looming [Official Video]
Steven Wilson - The Harmony Codex This feels like the culmination of the last two albums (To the Bone, The Future Bites) coalescing into an experimental but solid whole.  It's best enjoyed in a single sitting instead of bits and pieces.  There's also an alternate version of this album (Harmonic Distortion) including outtakes and remixes that is just as enjoyable as the main album.
Steven Wilson - Economies of Scale
Squid - O Monolith I wasn't immediately sold on Squid's first album (Bright Green Field), but after watching them play live they won me over.  This second album is just as intense as the first.  They know their strengths and play to them and the audience wins.  Each song is incredibly complex, yet somehow they pull it off live and make it look easy, every member playing with a musical ambidexterity that is breathtaking.    Squid - La Route du Rock 2023 – ARTE Concert
Queens of the Stone Age - In Times New Roman I still remember vividly seeing Songs for the Deaf at the local Hastings Muisc store at a listening station and proceeding to listen to the entire album.  I stood there for an hour because the music rooted me to the spot.  I'd never had an experience like that before.  I'm sure the store clerk wondered if I didn't have anywhere else to go.  Needless to say I became an instant fan and have been ever since.  Queens of the Stone Age - Time And Place (Official Audio)
Knower - Knower Forever The first time I experienced Knower was back in 2016 and the video for "The Government Knows".   It was hilarious and strange and I couldn't get over how catchy it was.  I was compelled to seek out more from the group and began to appreciate the pure musicianship of Louis Cole and his gang of gifted musical cohorts.  Over the years he released solo albums and had an insane side project known as Clown Core that's a genre unto itself.  With Knower he's always had Genevieve Artadi as a musical partner and her voice fits the music perfectly.  This latest album is their best so far.  I'm The President - KNOWER
Hania Rani - Ghosts I think I first heard Hania based on the Youtube algorithm that thought I might like an insanely talented pianist and composer.  This was mid-pandemic 2020 and her album "Home".  It's one thing to hear the music, but it's quite another to see her perform solo and realize she's creating all of these soundscapes on the fly.  Ethereal, beautiful, and transporting music. Hania Rani - Full Performance (Live on KEXP)
The Fierce and the Dead - News from the Invisible World This was a recent discovery.   I know that I'll end up loving a group if I can't stop thinking about a song I heard.  In this case it's one called "Non-Player".  The entire album is great though, bouncing around between song styles and genre's.  I was surprised to find that it's the first with vocals, their past releases being instrumental. ▶︎ News From The Invisible World | The Fierce And The Dead (bandcamp.com)
IDLES - (Everything) I was late to the IDLES party by four albums, but I've now got my arms and legs tucked inside the ride and I'm holding on for dear life.  Not since Oceansize has a group affected me this profoundly.  It's all right there on display, no gimmicks, everything's genuine.  "If someone talked to you, the way you do to you, I'd put their teeth through.  Love yourself." I am beyond excited for the new album coming in February.  IDLES - DANCER  (Official Video)
