Do you think that Lyanna and Rhaegar were seriously in love?

Yes. It’s literally so plain to see, you have to dig your nails deep in denial to think otherwise. You can read between the lines that GRRM wrote them as lovers.

GRRM has described himself as a romantic and ultimately R+L will be framed romantically (yes yes it has problematic implications when you think about it, but so do many other relationships that the series frames romantically, not least because these books were written with thirty-year-old sexual mores).

He dies with her name on his lips, she with his roses in her hand.

The subversion of “dragon kidnaps girl and valiant lover knight fights a war to save his beloved from her tower” when in truth the “knight” turns out to be a bit of a manwhoring douch who slept with every woman he came across, and the girl loved the dragon he slayed.

The gender subversion of the beautiful Princess with the beautiful voice and the valiant knight who stands up for the weak.

The tale of Bael the Bard, in which a Stark maid associated with winter roses disappears with a singer and comes back with their son. A male relative takes part in his killing and presents it to her as some kind of victory, but it actually breaks her heart, and she dies “by tower”.

Lyanna being heavily asscoicated to Winter Roses which were given to her by non other than Rhaegar Targaryen when he named her his Queen of Love and Beauty. Roses in general are a symbol of love while the blue rose adds a hint of mystique and in attanining the impossible.

Rhaegar, the emo Prince, who was said to have been never truly happy, named the place he stayed at with Lyanna the “Tower of Joy.”

Dany seeing a blue flower growing out of a wall of ice, which filled the air with sweetness in the HotU during the love section of her visions. It's a clear hint of Jon Snow being the love child of Rhaegar and Lyanna who will likely also be Dany’s third and final husband.

Ned confronts Robert about not truly loving Lyanna, because he only ever saw her beauty and not the Iron underneath- it’s implied that the big moment between Rhaegar and Lyanna was meeting her as a Knight who valiantly defended the honor of the weak, not some lovely little maiden spotted at a feast as she would have been to Robert.

The author refers to Rhaegar as a “love struck prince.”

And of course, we have this official new artwork by Justin Sweet, one that GRRM personaly commissioned, which frankly gives me some misguided hope that TWOW is nearly upon us. lol

I love the interplay of light and dark given what we know of these characters: Rhaegar with his sense of grief/doom is fully in the shade of the enormous heart tree while Lyanna is in the half-light half-dark, perhaps representing her own more optimistic and less convoluted worldview. She's exploring, finding balance; he's watching and seeing something he admires that somehow exists in all the twists and inescapable turns of the forest engulfing them.

The third 'person' in the art is the heart tree itself, old/wise/frowning, but also cradling both Lyanna and Rhaegar. They're both connected to it, representing in a sense that their fates are sealed and known. This is a stolen moment they're having (it's a false spring) but despite the simplicity it's still connected to the much larger world around them.

Another point I like is the lack of sigil etc. on their clothing—we know who they are but the interaction is not one of Targaryen to Stark on it's face. [there's also this other art by the same artist which parallels Lyanna and Jon's poses + Rhaegar and Jon's clothes

LAST AND MOST IMPORTANT THOUGH: the blue roses at the bottom that are firmly in the light.

Conclusion: Rhaegar and Lyanna were intended to be your classical tragic love story; think Romeo and Juliet or Tristan and Isolde and whatnot, not Rhaegar kidnapping some random girl to have a Visenya. Although Rhaegar’s desire to have a third child probably pushed him into pursuing his passion in running off with ‘his Lady Lyanna’ too use some of Ser Barristan words here.

Pikelan is probably the most complex CR ship and more people need to realize that instead of branding it as the "haha funny gnomes" ship.

because the entirely of Pikelan revolves around Scanlan, a very charismatic bard who flirts with literally everyone around him but is head-over-heels in love with his cleric friend but is tragically dogshit at expressing it so he resorts to doing crude bits and gags that ultimatly mask who he truly is.

And then you have Pike, a cleric brimming with self-confidence, who absolutely loves Scanlan for who he is, but is constantly getting mixed signals, because on one hand, he's constantly doing crude jokes and flirting with every person he sets his sights on (even so far as going after his unknown daughter) but on another, he tenderly holds her while she's bleeding and he's constantly at her side during battle and even tends to her emaciated brother for her and it's beautiful to watch, but the moment, the moment she brings it up, he reverts back to his crass personality and it just leaves her reeling about who he truly is.

And then we get to Bards Lament, and Scanlan, after tip-toeing around his true emotions for so long, finally snaps and lets everything he's been feeling (all the pain, and self-loathing manifested as anger towards everyone else, because even in his darkest moment, he's still so dogshit at expressing it for what it truly is) and Pike, who's been wrestling with these mixed signals, finally gets his true feelings on what he feels, calling her magic weird, hating that the same magic that has kept him alive and safe for so long brought him back to his sad existence, hating her for doing it. In the end, Scanlan leaves, just as Pike left the first time and the second time. And Pike stays behind, watching as he heads towards somewhere where she cant follow, abandoning the team and her and grog and everything they've built for themselves. She loves him, and him leaving brings her to that point.

The two are split apart, and despite the anger and hurt, the need for connection with each other is so strong. Scanlan reveals that he dident fully leave Taldorei at first, that he was only 20 miles away in another town entirely, listening to Pike's earing conversations. And eventually, when Scanlan is on another continent, he finds a temple of the Everlight (or just simply begins talking to Everlight) and prays, prays for guidance on finding forgiveness for what he said and did. He's deeply in love with pike, and still is, going to her god for answers to his problems, the quickest connection to Pike that he has between one giant ocean and a continent.

And Pike, despite holding a very rightful disdain for what he said to her, keeps him up to date, informs him of her happenings with the people of Whitestone. She should fucking hate his guts and yet the person she wants to speak to at the end of her day is a bard who (for all she knows) threw his earing away and traveled to some far off place, forever gone from Vox Machina, from her. Yet she keeps speaking.

They switch roles, with Scanlan becoming the quiet solitary one seeking forgiveness for his actions and Pike becoming the people oriented one.

When they reunite, it's tense and sad and angry. So many things said in anger and hurt and they don't really know where to step in the case that something, anything might send them back to that angry, angry place. And suddenly their back at the same place they were before, before the fight.

Pike is, again, trying so hard to sift through the mixed signals he's giving because he's being Scanlan again! Charming bard, essential party member, more confident than he's ever been! but now he's standing near the back and holding his hands and apologizing with a soft voice that she hasn't heard in over a year and a half and rebuilding the bridges he's burned and she doesn't know what to think!

And Scanlan is giving an honest effort at trying to fix what he's broken. He's working harder than ever, he's apologizing. He tries very hard to have conversations with people and fixing what he can. But, again, he's Scanlan, who is less dogshit at expressing what he feels, but still pretty dogshit none the less, and now he's a crime boss and still a beloved bard, but he's also surrounded by the friends, some of them he loves so dearly and he's trying, he's trying so hard

Eventually, everything is forgiven and in the end, Pike and Scanlan come to term with themselves and each other. Pike comes to terms with knowing that Scanlan is a complex person, a broken person just trying to figure his way through this world, just as she had done.

in the end, Pike becomes the person Scanlan feels the most free to be around, one where he doesn't have to put on the mask of a performer, where he can just be Scanlan the gnome instead of Scanlan, bard extraordinaire. and Pike comes to terms with knowing that Scanlan is a complex person, a broken person just trying to figure his way through this world, just as she had done before.

and together, they are beautiful reflection of each other.

People like to point to a lot of random scenes in Link Click to justify why ShiGuang being romantic is canon. Now, I'm not the creator of Link Click, I have no authority on the subject. So most the time, it's a "lets agree to disagree" situation.

However, there is one scene from Episode 1 that I find down-right offensive for people to point to as evidence of Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang being an item:

There is no doubt that this scene is incredibly beautiful and loving, but romance isn't what makes this scene beautiful, nor is it what makes the bond they share so touching and engaging to watch. The fact that they honest-to-God love and care about each other is.

What makes this particular scene really lovely is information we're given later in the show. Its full tenderness only clicks in hindsight once we know more about the characters and Cheng Xiaoshi's past. Specifically, when we understand more about how their powers work and the tragic fact that Xiaoshi is (effectively) an orphan.

So we need to back up a few steps.

The scene begins with us seeing Emma dreaming about her parents, and we eventually see a visual representation of how Cheng Xiaoshi is also experiencing this dream as her, taking on her feelings.

Then there's her parents leaving, metaphorical for how out of her life they are now and how much Emma misses her parents (duh).

The fun part comes from the fact that it's not Emma we see as a child at this point, but Xiaoshi. He is being left behind by his parents.

Look at this face. IT'S THE FACE OF PAIN, and for me it honestly didn't make sense why this dream was as emotionally impactful for him as it was (on my first watchthrough).

Afterwards Cheng Xiaoshi wakes up, and Lu Guang notices this. At times like this, I really appreciate the dub for localising what's being said better than the more literal subtitles (even though the dub definitely says some shit that just ain't true). The dub's word choices are:

LG: "You're up?" CXS: "I dreamt that I had spring rolls with my parents." LG: "Folks on your mind?" CXS: "Yeah, and they're on hers as well."

LG: "When you became her, you took on some of her feelings and her memories. It must be tough." CXS: "... I wonder if they'll come back."

and then Cheng Xiaoshi rolls over and starts hugging himself tightly because of the unbearable pain

It takes a hot second for Lu Guang to realise what Cheng Xiaoshi actually means by his statement, that the 'they' in question is his own parents rather than anyone in Emma's life. Naturally, Lu Guang understands that Cheng Xiaoshi is suffering immensely right now because Xiaoshi's being forced to feel the agonising hole is his life that came from the worst thing that ever happened to him.

And so, he reaches through time and space (metaphorically?) to comfort him, his all-time best friend and, yes, potential romantic partner, telling him that "It will work out, just rest." Because SWEET JESUS, WHO WOULDN'T TRY COMFORTING THEIR FRIEND IN THAT MOMENT!? WHO??

It's beautiful. It's sweet. It's loving. It shows how in-tune they are to each other and that they care about each other's well being. No macho shit here, only a wholesome connection that we are all jealous of and celebrate.

Bonus analysis: knowing Cheng Xiaoshi's emotional state at this point, his re-suffering of the pain from being separated from his parents, then makes the message from Emma's mother and his reaction to it all the more emotionally touching.

Maybe the reason he sent the reply "I miss you" wasn't even for Emma's sake in that moment, but a result of the line between his own loneliness and hers having become so blurred in that sleepy moment.

I'd just like to clarify again, if you think they're gay together: cool. If you think this scene is the reason why: not cool.

Romance isn't the highest form of love, and it's not gay or weird to love your friends. What Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang have is really beautiful, and I honestly don't think I've ever seen such a great depiction of two men who are so comfortably close to each other.

Whether their relationship is platonic or otherwise doesn't really matter here. What upsets me is the unhealthy elevation of romantic love as the most true and purest form of love over all other kinds -- that you can only care about someone this much and want them in your life ONLY if you want to marry them or something -- an idea that ends up hurting a lot of people.

Romance isn't what makes this scene beautiful, nor is it what makes the bond they share so touching and engaging to watch. The fact that they honest-to-God love and care about each other is.

How 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' pulled off Poseidon and Sally's emotional diner chat

Virginia Kull and Toby Stephens talk about shooting episode 7's pivotal scene.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a rollicking fantasy adventure, complete with frightening monsters, high-stakes battles, and gods pulled straight from Greek mythology. So it may come as a surprise that one of the show's best — and most talked-about — scenes is a quiet discussion between two parents.

Of course, these aren't normal parents. One is the Greek god Poseidon (Toby Stephens). The other is mortal Sally Jackson (Virginia Kull), who has spent the last 12 years preparing her son Percy (Walker Scobell) for his heroic destiny — and protecting him from the world of the Olympians.

Like many stories from ancient legends, Sally and Poseidon's relationship is a tragic romance. Separated by circumstances of literally mythic proportion, unable to raise Percy together because Olympian law dictates that Poseidon shouldn't even have a child, their story has no clear solution. Sally carries the burden of the truth about Percy's parentage, while Poseidon is unable to help without endangering both his son and the woman he loves. It's a tough dynamic to understand solely through Percy's eyes, but in episode 7, "We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of," Percy Jackson and the Olympians offers us a bigger window into Sally and Poseidon's connection, in all its painful messiness and surprising beauty.

"We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of" marks our first introduction to Poseidon and what his relationship with Sally really looks like. Because of this, our first glimpse of Poseidon in the flesh is not some bombastic display of godly power, but of a man and a woman simply talking in a diner about the difficulties Sally faces in raising Percy alone.

"It was a really clever way to introduce their relationship and introduce Poseidon, because it makes them very human," Stephens said of the scene in a video call with Mashable. "It's a domestic scene between a mother and father, and at the heart of it there's this pain. It's a yearning between two people to be connected who can't be, but Poseidon is also yearning to be connected with his son but can't because he's protecting him."

The diner scene was the first scene Stephens shot for the series, yet the chemistry and history between Poseidon and Sally were already well within reach for the actors. "I really liked working with Virginia, and she's a really great actress," said Stephens. "We found that very quickly. The scene just had a very intimate feel."

Percy Jackson and the Olympians began creating that sense of intimacy between Sally and Poseidon right from the very first episode, with a scene that sees Sally sitting on her fire escape, taking in the rain.

Kull was incredibly excited to see the fire escape scene when she first read the script. "In television, you typically don't have time for things like quiet, ordinary moments. And this seems like a humdrum moment, but I think it tells such a huge story," Kull said. "It's not just Sally sitting in the rain on the fire escape — she's sitting in the rain communing with the great love of her life and the father of her kid, and this is the way that she feels close to him."

The diner sequence feels like a natural progression from that fire escape moment. Sally and Poseidon are connecting in both, but there's still a distance between them. On the fire escape, Poseidon isn't actually present. But even when he's next to Sally in the diner, there's a tragic divide between them. They're close, but still far apart.

Director Anders Engström achieved this paradoxical nearness by telling Kull and Stephens to play the whole scene without ever looking at each other. For Kull, that became a key to unlocking the power of the diner scene.

"What that did to us as actors was that all of the feelings of, 'I need to see how this is affecting the person that I'm speaking to, I want to know what he thinks about what I'm saying,' we couldn't act on," Kull explained. "Therefore, the desire to be heard, to be understood, and to connect was so heightened and so charged, it was electric. It meant that any bad impulse to 'perform' went away, and I was just desperately listening to and clinging to what he was saying. Even the silences were powerful."

In these silences, where Sally and Poseidon sit shoulder-to-shoulder yet never look at one another, Percy Jackson and the Olympians builds an entire world of a relationship that, up to this point, we haven't fully understood.

"Because Poseidon has been absent for the whole show, the audience is going, 'What a jerk, this guy is this absentee father.' And then when you meet him, you go, 'Right, I get it. It's much more complicated, and actually he really does care,'" Stephens said. "This scene is not in the book, but I think it's needed in the TV version, because it gives you much more context."

I just made the saddest realisation ever. In 911 when Buck comes out and kisses Tommy, the first thing he says is that he's 'free' which I find to be a beautiful sentiment because Buck has finally come to terms with his bisexuality and is free to love who he wants. He can be with who he wants without society's negative perceptions on him because firefighters are supposed to masculine and aren't seen as being gay so this is amazing interpretation. The subtext fans of 911 have seen has finally been acknowledged by the writers and they are passionate about exploring the bi Buck storyline and I think the actor Oliver Stark plays those emotions really well because it is a sweet release of feelings he's always wanted to feel. He gets to be his true self. This is such a big interpretation for the queer community on TV because they get to explore Buck's sexuality with honesty and openess which I've seen other shows never committed to. They've just ignored it without fully addressing the text and leaving it open to fan interpretation which I find nuts because the potential is there to write a beautiful love story so for 911 to do this is a really big fucking deal. Building out this arc for Buck means we will get canon Buddie in the near future and that will most definitely break the Internet.

But this is where the Supernatural connection comes in. After Dean and Sam defeat Chuck, the first thing Dean says when they get back to the bunker is that they're 'finally free' as Chuck is no longer meddling with their lives as part of his own story and Dean is free to do what he chooses. And then the next episode, Dean dies before he has the chance to relish in that freedom. He could of been a free bisexual man on screen. They had his literal best friend confess his love for him and then die after two episodes ago. The network weren't willing to explicitly show Dean's sexuality because it's like I said, they didn't address the text and left it up to dull interpretation as always. They never got their canon happy ending because the CW were cowards. Dean didn't get a chance to be free as his true self because the network was too afraid to commit to anything which is tragic. Buck rose out of Dean's ashes and got to do something he never did - he got to be explicitly bi on live television and I think it's a lesson that all networks should take up if fans are shipping two male characters together. Actually make them proud and actually explore it in depth. Be bold, take risks and actually make it canon.

Buck got to be free while Dean didn't. It feels insane to even write that in a sentence but it just shows you that 911 did what Supernatural never got the chance to achieve and that's cathartic bisexual interpretation. Buck got to carry on the flag and go to do what Dean Winchester never could and I think it's such a beautiful thing. It gives me hope that maybe things will be different one day.

A/N I Oh my god. This is the first time I'm writing for Charles, I'm super nervous about it??? But I watch Friends the other day and the break up scene with Monica and Richard inspired me...so enjoy. I guess. I'll pay for the tissues. (i didn't proofread it im sorry)

This was supposed to be the perfect lovely day. For everyone. For you.

Being surrounded by amazing and beautiful people. Enjoying the perfect Spanish landscape that make the environment so dreamy, like a fairytale. Having fun with your friends and your boyfriend. Imagining what could be your very own future one day.

Yes, it was supposed to be like that.

“Congratulations!” you shouted when Isa and Carlos finally approached you. They looked absolutely gorgeous. But you didn’t except less from them for their wedding day. They both looked like they came out from the perfect romcom with those creators’ clothes, their perfect hair and just the pure joy on their face. Isa was a pure princess and you wanted to cry just looking at her.

“I’m so happy you’re here.” She told you when she took you in her arms. She smelled like happiness and delight. Just another proof of how love can be magical. You held her tight, to make her feel all your joy for their wedding. And trying to steal some of her happiness too. “Like I could miss your wedding day? No way.”

When you started dating Charles two years ago, she was the first person in the paddock who came to you to make sure you felt comfortable. She’d been there before, and she didn’t want you to feel rejected. And your boyfriends being in the same team quite help with the whole mentor thing.

When she told you Carlos had proposed to her, you cried like it was your own proposal. It was such evidence that these two were made for each other. There was no way you would miss their wedding day.

Not when you could come with your boyfriend and live that beautiful day together. Not when you would spend the daydreaming about your own wedding by his arms.

Nothing could have made you missed it.

Yeah, nothing. You knew that now.

“They’re started to take the family and couple pictures, the photograph will call you in a minute or two.” Carlos told Charles but you heard it too. For a second, you looked at each other. The connection between the two of you was so strong that you knew you both thought the same thing. And then, you both came to the same conclusion.

For once, you were happy that Isa was too overwhelmed by her own happiness that she didn’t notice that moment.

And they were right. Less than two minutes after that, you had to let the couple go their next guests because you were excepted for the pictures. At any other moment in your life, someone would have pointed out how Charles and you were different. There was a small space between you. One that was never there before. At such a romantic event, they would expect him to have an arm around your shoulder or his hand literally holding yours. But Charles wasn’t touching you. And it was better like that. The less you had to pretend, the less difficult it would be to face the truth.

“Tu veux rentrer? Do you want to go home?” Charles asked when he finally put his arm around your waist. You were now facing the photographer and there was no way you could act distant when those pictures would be seen by everyone. No matter the outcome of the day. You let yourself come closer for the picture, for the idea of the perfect couple you still wanted to give.

“No, it’s their day. We can’t do that.” You whispered before putting on your biggest smile. You even put a hand on Charles’ chest.

There was something crazy with how you had to think about every gesture that used to be automatic before. You never thought about how you should act around Charles. You couldn’t remember the number of pictures you took with him for official events. Those pictures were always loved by the fan because you looked naturally in love. Laughing and smile at each other, with genuine and sweet gestures. But today, nothing felt natural.

“Could you look at each other please?” the photographer asked. You felt Charles’ hands shaking on you for a brief second, like it was too much to ask right now. But you both knew you had to play pretend. So, you turned to face him. Oh, how you missed when you used to look at the man you love and see all the delight of being by your side in his eyes. It was crazy to miss something you were witnessing that morning.

Now all you could see was sadness.

“Smile.” You whispered, putting a hand on his cheek. He immediately huddled against it, trying to find some comfort in your touch. You both had sad smiles on your face. Or what could be interpreted as soft ones. You could see the flash out of the corner of your eye, so you guessed you were showing enough love. But there was so much more. So many things unsaid. So many tears that were waiting to fall for the both of you.

It was cruel.

It was cruel to understand you had no future with the person you love on your best friend’s wedding day.

It all started when you were getting dressed for the day. Isa and Carlos had rented a beautiful and massive house for their closed guests. Needless to say, you had a gorgeous room with a just as gorgeous view. You probably could have stayed there for days if you weren’t there for a wedding. And you assumed that you and Charles would enjoy that room a little longer on the morning after. The idea of waking up by his sides, cuddling against his naked chest, enjoying the sunshine on your naked skin, the glow of his brown hair making him a pure piece of art was driving you crazy since you arrived yesterday.

“Hi Charles” you heard a little voice say in your back. You turned around, just like your boyfriend, and faced an adorable little boy. You already knew it was one of Carlos’ nephews, you had seen him at some races before. And your heart melted when Charles kneeled down to talk to him. “Hi buddy.”

They started talking and getting ready had never been that hard for you. You could stop looking at them and taking pictures. Charles was so good with children. At that moment, you knew you had chosen the right man for the rest of your life.

Or so you thought.

When he came back to you, he kissed your hair with so much love. Nothing could have prepared the two of us for what was coming. “Isn’t he adorable?”

“He is!” you replied with a high-pitched voice. “I can’t wait to have our own child.” You added before going back to your mirror and your mascara.

You didn’t really expect any kind of answer. But you never imagined you would face a menacing silence. You waited a good minute before facing Charles, frowning. “You disagree?” you asked with a little amusement in your voice.

“Je ne savais pas que tu voulais des enfants. I didn’t know you wanted children.“ Was all he said. But he could have hit you, it would have hurt and surprised you just the same.

“Well…yeah. It has always been my plan to have some one day. Rather sooner than later, if I may say.” You laughed. It was a nervous laugh. The one you made hoping it would change the mood in the room. But it didn’t.

Charles sat on the sofa at the other end of the room. He never felt more distant. Even when you were staying at Monaco and he was racing on another continent he felt closer. “We never talked about this.” You had no idea if he said that for you or for himself. Like he realized this was never brought up by any of you. He was right about that.

The thing was that you both assumed the other was thinking the same.

“Charles.” You said, walking up to him. Each step was more difficult than the precedent. It was like walking towards a danger. You knew you should walk away. You should avoid this. But you couldn’t resist. You had to. “You don’t want children?” you asked with a little voice. Ironically, you did sound like a child right now. Scared of asking for something his parent would say no to.

Scared of asking your boyfriend the truth because you knew it would change everything.

Charles didn’t answer. It took him a few seconds to look up at him. He didn’t speak. But his eyes said it all. No.

You put a hand to your mouth and sat next to him before falling to your knees. How could that possible? How could you have missed that information?

“It’s not…it’s not that I don’t want to. Like not all at. I just…I can’t imagine having a family and being away. I can’t imagine having a family and risking abandoning you or them. I can’t…No. Je peux pas faire ça. I can’t do it.” You saw the sincerity in his eyes. Or you think you did but since you started crying, maybe it was just a blurry vision.

When Charles tried to put a hand to your face to brush those tears away, you put his hand away. “Why did you never tell me?” You felt betrayed, in some kind of way. It wasn’t fair to assume everyone wants children, of course. But since you never had this conversation, you stupidly thought Charles would be hiding something like that. The amount of time you talked about a future together, he never even alluded to his non-wish.

“We never talked about it, you just assumed I wanted children.” He replied, shrugging. You could understand the logical behind this. But today, you were just facing the truth: you were no on the same page for something so important for you.

“And you assumed I didn’t?”

You got up again, walking and trying to understand the mess that was going on right now. You tried to rethink this, to interpretate exactly what you both said to find the light and the solution. But when you put your eyes on Charles everything was just so clear.

That man that you love. That gorgeous man, sitting here, with his hair still messy, his tie waiting to be done around his neck and his shirt opened, and his glossy eyes that showed you just as hurt he was. That man that you thought would be the love of your life.

That man didn’t want the same future as you.

“So, what now?” you asked. You needed some help. But Charles wasn’t ready to give you some. Because he was just as lost as you were.

“What do you mean, what now? You want children, I don’t. Either one of us accept to change its mind or…”

He didn’t get to finish his sentence because Isa’s maid of honor entered the room to see if you were ready. You told her you just needed a few minutes. But she didn’t leave the room, so you went back to your makeup to try and make you look happier.

You never finished that conversation.

You were just left with the feeling that this couldn’t end well.

Most of the reception went so quickly you almost forgot about your fight with Charles and the whole situation. A few times, you even forgot that you were pretended to be happy. You just were, holding each other’s hands or laughing together like nothing happened.

At least you did until the first dance. Once Isa and Carlos did their dance and made everyone agree that they were once again just a royal couple, it was time for the other couples to go. It was a kind of tradition: Isa’s parents were already there and so was Carlos Senior with his wife.

You weren’t sure Charles would want to go. Maybe it was too much. Too close, too romantic, too…fake. You would have understand if you had stayed sit and probably would have found the perfect excuse for your friends.

So, you were surprised when he offered you a hand. “You’re sure?” you asked so softly it was a miracle Charles heard you. He just nodded and point to the middle of the room. After all, you needed that. You would have regret not enjoying that moment with Charles, no matter the situation or your feelings.

He put his hand at the end of your back, the other one holding yours. Your put your head against his shoulders and holding him as much as you could. There were playing a Spanish love song you didn’t know but feeling Charles’s heart against yours let you know that those words were speaking to the both of you.

“Écoutes…si tu veux un bébé, alors je le ferais. Listen, if you want a baby, i’ll do it.” Charles whispered in your ear suddenly.

You stepped backwards, just enough to face him. “What?” you asked, frowning. This was not the outcome you had prepare yourself to. And it never occurred you that Charles would choose this moment to talk about it. Was it the reason he asked to dance? So you could talk about that?

“Yes” he started, bringing his hand to your face to put a piece of hair behind your ear. “I love you and if this baby can save our relationship, then fine. I’ll do it.” You felt your heart squeezing.

“But, you don’t want one Charles.”

“Yes, but I love you.” The way his voice flinched at the end was enough. You could tell how much it meant to him. How big his love for you was. Just as big as yours was, actually. And this was why it was even harder to accept this.

You closed the gap between you two to put a soft and gentle kiss on his lips. It could have stayed like that, if a tear didn’t fall from your eye and rolled down his cheek. You felt his hand caressing your cheek softly once you put your forehead against his. This was just an intimate moment in the middle of a crowded room. What a good representation of what your relationship always felt like.

“I love you too.” You felt your voice cracking. “That’s why I can’t accept that.”

“Why?” and maybe it was the most heartbreaking part. The moment you were looking right into Charles eyes. The moment you knew what was going to happen. The moment he knew what was going to happen. The moment none of you could do anything about it.

They always teach you how love can be beautiful and magic. You saw it all day long.

They never prepare you for the tragic part. When you love someone so much you have to accept, you’re not good for each other.

“I won’t have a baby with someone with doesn’t want one.” He opened his mouth but saw in your eyes that it wasn’t the right moment to talk. “I love you more than anything. But I won’t let you do that because you feel like you have to.”

Charles looked up, something he always do when he tried to save his tears from falling. You hated yourself for that. But when he looked back at you and offered you a sweet small smile, you knew he didn’t hate you. You didn’t let him sacrifice his life for you. And neither did you sacrifice your life for him. You made the most difficult and hurtful choice, but the most reasonable one. One that Charles probably wouldn’t have been able to make.

It wasn’t until you were back in his arms that it occurred you.

“So, what now?” you cried against his shoulder. Yes, the decision was taken. But were you going to do now that the end was near?

“Restons heureux et amoureux au moins pour ce soir. We stay happy and in love at least for tonight.” He replied before kissing your hair.

That was what you did. For some reasons, you felt lighter for the rest of the night. Because you knew that for the rest of the day, you won’t have to pretend anything. You were still in love. You were still happy together. You could laugh, kiss each other and dance together like normal couples do. You could hold each other’s hands, knowing you would be sleeping in the same bed and probably make love for the last time in a few hours.

Because next morning, you would have to let each other go. But not tonight.

Well. That certainly explains a lot.

Watanuki not born to be like Lava Lamp but just Literally being him, but as a living temporary space/time distortion that only exists temporarily.

Which I think is what finally explains why he was in danger of fading out of existence in xxxHolic, and had a few moments where he dropped out of reality completely. That was probably his natural fate all along, to just vanish from existence when his role was up.

Which Yuuko did not stand for and repeatedly brings him back to her little inbetween dimension to keep him safe. And is potentially why she makes excuses to keep him around in the first place, to stablise his existence and using her little pocket existence as a safe space to keep him going. The store is hinted to become His, after all. Maybe if he lived there permanently he could just exist regularly.

It does make me wonder if THIS is also what Yuuko’s probably disappearance will be about as well. If she will trade herself to keep Watanuki alive. As one In-between Being to another.

But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself and WHAT WAS THAT EVIL WOLVERINE SAID ABOUT SUFFERING?

Is the suffering this wish gave their parents an emotional thing, or is it a literal distortion in space time that will rip them apart? Is this also what lead to their deaths, or did they (mirroring Sakura’s parents) also trade their lives to keep Lava Lamp/Watanuki existing?

So many questions but HOT DAMN WE ARE FINALLY GETTING SOME ANSWERS AND I LOVE IT

Also I'm just noticing Yuuko's little step in that last frame as she steps in to interrupt

YUUKO ICHIHARA MVP OF THE UNIVERSE.

I LOVE how this plays out like two competing gods fighting over fate. Or maybe more relevantly, the fairies fighting at the start of Sleeping Beauty - one laying a curse of suffering and death, and the other stepping in to minimise harm as much as possible and give people a hope to survive.

Oh it’s all so beautiful. Evil Wolverine as the selfish, murdering Wish deliverer, who tricked his way into getting what he wants and piled suffering and misfortune around everyone he forces himself to meet. And Yuuko as the person who is technically completely neutral and only balances things out, but Still Steps In to ensure things ARE balanced. She cannot be the benevolent force she seems to want to be at times, but she can enforce balance, and that lets her limit Evil Wolverine when he exceeds the natural order. Wish prices are always precise - if Evil Wolverine disproportionately stretches it beyond what the price really was, Yuuko can find the spaces where he’s wrong and pull him back.

Evil Wolverine trying to connect things up into tragic endings that suit his goals, but Yuuko stepping in and saying no, actually, that's not the bargain.

And this one lonely little boy being in the centre of it all. He was never meant to exist, but here he is, a temporary mistake only meant to fill a hole, and the forces of the universe fight each other around him to either doom him entirely or to somehow keep him alive.

I've recently gotten into web comics but I don't like most of the male characters in romance comics, they do some really creepy things that seem to just get swept under the rug. Do you have any recommendations for some good romance comics?

*cracks neck* I've trained for this day for years

This is going to be a combination of manhwa, manhua, webtoons and probably some manga too, of all kinds of genres, most are my favorites and I'll explain why so pick whatever catches your interest.

Post is going to be super long so:

I Stan The Prince -> starting of with a strong one, the fl writes a fanfiction about the notorious ex crown prince and raises his popularity. Now she has to work with him and write another book all while dealing with political drama and dark royal secrets. This manhwa rescently just came back from an incredibly long hiatus, it has no novel it's an original manhwa and the main couple are literally the cutest most in love mutual pining idiots ever they're married they just don't know it yet

Hidden Love -> Warning this has a 7 age gap! The story starts when the fl is 13 and meets her brothers dormmate and falls in love with him but keeps it a secret and they lose contact. Years later when she's in college she reunites with the brother's friend and old feelings start to resurface and he slowly falls for her now that she is an adult. I am going to repeat this only once, no grooming, no weird underage romance, ml never liked her like that when she was a child her romance was one sided back then, both are consenting adults now. The fl helps ml with his struggling past and makes him realize he is worthy of love. The fl is strong and confident and she's the one saving the ml multiple times. The ml is literally such a green flag even if he's a big flirt when "courting" her. It's an incredibly touching story and it even has a drama

Eternal Love/First Froat -> set in the same universe as the story above, this is about the love story of the prev fl brother and the mc, his high school classmate. Both had a crush on each other back then but the fl pushed him away coldly and they seperated. Years later they met by chance and by chance yet again ended up as roommates. Slowly they realize the feelings never went away and they keep getting drawn to each other but the horribly tragic past of the fl and the reason she pushed the ml away slowly uncoveres too. This is a beautiful story of a love that never stopped. The mcs are literally meant to be and the fl is so strong after everything she's been through. And the ml is the most patient, caring mam ever everyone deserves a man like him. Literally the standard. Both these books can be read as stand alones but there are some hilarious moments that can only be completely understood if you read them both

Savinvg My Sweetheart -> You will cry so hard while reading this. Fl is the saintess' daughter and after the death of her husband who she was politically married to, she goes back in time a few months before their marriage and only has one goal, to save her kind husbad from her mother even if it causes her death. Both the fl and ml love each other so incredibly much but both think the other hates them because of the forced marriage yet that misunderstanding doesn't stop them from being the literal greatest cople ever! The are such a healthy couple and both are incredibly fleshed out and not just making romance their entire point of existance. Fl slowly gathers powers in order to stop her biological mother who is evil incarnate and save everyone. Ml works together with fl and on his own in order to strengthen his kingdom. And the link that connects them will literally have you crying for the next 20 years. The story is more of a found family/romance and it's one of the most well written stories ever, you will almost never find one loophone everything is planned to the T

Caught By The Villain -> the ml might start bad here but I'm telling you his character development is simply 👌 ✨️. Fl gets transported into the world of this novel she read as the twin sister of a minor villain. Later she has to join knighthood disgusted as her brother and somehow gets chosen as the personal guard of the crown prince, aka main villain, but also with the og!ml which is somewhat different from the story. Ok I'm going to start by saying the title is literally the greatest clickbait ever because almost everyone but the villain catch her and discovered she's a girl. The story has great representation and discusses about a lot of topics like gender and sexuality which you almost never find talked in manhwas. The ml starts bad but slowly by spending time with fl he realizes his mistakes, sincerely apologises tho does not expect forgiveness, promises to change and does keep his word, genuenly loves and cherishes her and is an all round little meow meow and I love him. He's a bi disaster too. Fl is strong and under lots of stress. She slowly gets closer with ml and realizes he's not just the big bad evil villain from the novel and the closer they get and the more genuine their friendship becomes, the more she feels guilty for hiding her true identity from ml. And the og!ml is a special case that I don't even wanna touch with a 10 foot pole so theres that. The development all these characters go through is slow and so perfectly written you don't even realize how much they changed until you go back and realise they're not the same as the beginong

Even If You Split My Mouth -> manga with japanese urban legends which means it has some gore and body horror. The story follows a Kuchisake-Onna and her contract fiancé, a 17 yo boy who has the power to strengthen her legend with his words so she won't disappear. She doesn't want this engagement while he is in love with her so they form a pact, if she can scare him within a year the engagement is off, if not than they get married. This is one of those stories that start all silly goofy but end up having some of the deepest lore ever. The fl is super cute for a yokai and she blushes a lot every time ml flirts. Ml is completly unphased by her scare attempts and loves her to bits. They're such a dumb cute couple and their love story is so fun and sad sometimes. All the side characters are entertaining and lovable. Really there's not one bad thing I can say about this manga, it deserves more love

You Are My Desire -> high school sweethearts and later uni sweethearts. Fl moves to a new city and school after her parents messy divorce and her father's remarriage. While looking around she stumbles upon a tatoo shop and amazingly embarrasses herself in front of the tattooist. On the first day of school she happens to end up as deskmates with that same tattooist who's coincidentally the school tyrant but slowly it becomes visible this tyrant doesn't act like a tyrant at all and so a weird relationship is born out of the two of them. The two mcs are one of the best couples I've ever read. They slowly heal heach others wounds and teach each other that they love them even with their scars. I don't wanna say a lot since the manhua only has aroumd 20 chapters and there's so much story from the novel that hasn't been told yet. There's slso a drama that was rescently released

Daytime Star -> modern manhwa. An actress who has been cast as nothing but an extra for almost 10 years lands a small role where she gets to play along one of the best male actors in the industry. After that they both can't stop thinking about each other and that's how their love story begins. One of the healthiest modern manhwa couples ever! They're literally so cute they will call you single in all languages pf the world and more. I also loved that the fl slowly rose to fame almost all on her own using her own strength and talent with very few minor moments where others helped. It's a great story and it talks about the struggles of working on the korean entertainment industry too

Villains Are Destined to Die -> oh where do I begin with this masterpiece! Fl gets transmigrated into a dating sim she was playing as the villaines and she's currently in the hard mode which makes it super dificult for her to clear the game. She has to increase the affection percentage of the capture targets so she can go back to her old life and avoid the bad ending which always results in her death. This is literally one of those stories that gets you hooked on the very first chapters alone. Fl goes through so much and she's such a tragic character. All she wants is a peaceful life and she works damn hard for it. Her family is just exhausting but they slowly develop besides SOME who shall not be named. The ml, which you'll probably figure out who it is lile halfway through because he's just that iconic, is literally THE BEST, THE STANDARD! I love him so much and it might not show it in the begining chapters but he's is just perfect. The romance is more secondary tho and the story focuses more on the fl's struggles to survive and the discovery of the secrets that can change the fate of the entire kingdom.

See You In My 19th Life -> this rescently got a drama and I recommend watching that too. Fl is a reincarnator who remembers all her lives besides the first one. In her 19th life she resolves to find a boy form her 18th life who made her enjoy life again after so many reincarnations and made her wish she was reincarnated once again. She manages to get a job in the hotel he manages and immediately asks him to date. Thus begins the story of her following and flirting with her love from the prevous life without him knowing it's her and slowly healing his scars and traumas while also solving the mystery of her reincarnation. The story us full of mystery and absurdly cute couples. The ml is traumatized by fl's death since she died quite literally right in front of his eyes when he was really young and he also has a crap ton of family drama to deal with. The fl loves the him so much and tries her best to help him not just physically but emotionally too. She's like a breath of fresh air for the ml and their love is just so selfless. Cyberpunk 2077 and Autonomy

Ok ok so I might be seeing things but I think this game really gets how important bodily autonomy is. This is a rant about Evelyn, So Mi, and V. Many spoilers ahead! I played as Valerie, so I’ll be sticking to the version of the Cyberpunk 2077 story where V is a woman.

I didn’t notice it at first, but now I can’t unsee the parallels between the three women. All of them are reduced to their bodies, their usefulness, by the ones in power. It’s a universal phenomenon in the hypercapitalist hellscape of cyberpunk 2077 - just look at the ads. But I think these three exemplify it clearly and viscerally:

Evelyn was a sex worker, employed by and providing services for horrible people, and, if it wasn’t enough, she literally had a chip that temporarily erased any trace of her individuality. The world’s attitude toward her is accentuated by one of the first lines we hear directed at her - that disgusting comment made by Smasher. Her later fate just drives home this terrifying point. Evelyn had friends, dreams, and talents, she was a Person - but the Night City only cared about one thing.

So Mi was forced to work for the FIA. And this job took everything from her. It’s not just her past life and any meaningful human connection, but also her own body. It was changed without her consent so that she could serve the FIA better; and So Mi still clearly feels insecure about how she looks, not at home in her own skin, because of it. She was forced to perform tasks that hurt her, and, in the end, risked erasing her identity. And I think that small moment - blink and you’ll miss it - when Kurt Hansen leads her away, inappropriately touching her, really shows that she’s not just exploited as a professional, no, she is fully dehumanized by the powerful people around her.

And Valerie. The story would be very different if there were just some hitmen on her tail that would find her in a few weeks. No, the Arasaka Relic literally sees the living breathing, and feeling V as just a vacant body, slowly erasing her. The process of V slowly losing control of her body and identity is chilling, and portrayed so well. And just as a cherry on top, we can remember the ganger lines when fighting Valerie: they call her a c*nt and wh*re - both are just common misogynistic insults, but here I want to bring attention to how both words, again, dehumanize V.

Why am I recounting this? Because I think the game specifically separates simply dying and being stripped of autonomy and identity, and how the second is one of the most terrifying things in the world (Johnny himself says as much in Transmission).

The horror of their situation, I think, is highlighted by how all three women, if all else fails, would prefer using their last piece of agency to leave this world forever, rather than live the life they were left with. “Both Sides Now”, “Leave in Silence”, and, in V's case, you don’t have an option to just come down from the roof without a plan, but you can put it all behind.

One other thing Evelyn, So Mi, and V have in common - is their desperation, their willingness to fight, risk, lie, and step over others (even the nicest V still likely kills dozens of people on her quest). And this willingness is NOT demonized, but understood, by the narrative.

Evelyn was never your friend, never helped you, and her mission led to a disaster. Yet, you are still prompted to raise the glass for her after Phantom Liberty, during the last talk with Alex. And I loved this moment, I loved how V recognized her bravery and respected her. How outraged she was by her fate, and how understanding and caring she was with Judy. At least in my playthrough.

And So Mi, oh So Mi. She lied to you too, it turns out, and it hurts. A lot. But I think V, if anyone, could fully understand why she did that. The whole Killing Moon quest is so tragic and tender, it is painful. And beautiful. Because So Mi found someone willing to help her escape even at their own expense, just because they understand.

V can escape too. Even with a loved one. To a new life. Because she found people who value her unconditionally, for just being herself. The people who know that all promises of NC are only lies. I fucking love this game?

I started typing and it got out of control...

I don't know if you've watched Ever After High or not, but I've been re-watching the entire show on account of not having much to do and I've come to the conclusion that an LU crossover with EAH would be absolutely awesome. The general idea is that characters from fairytales grow up and have kids that re-enact their parents' stories and this happens over and over again to the point that their entire society is built around this. Since they have a magic book that kind of seals your fate if you sign it, this is where the conflict of the show comes from.

Obviously there are a few different ways a person could go about setting this up but I'm just going to pick out fairy tale parents and backstories for them because I think that's the most fun.

Warriors: I'm thinking that he'd be best as Helen of Troy. Greek mythology is canon in EAH because of Cupid, so it works. The same themes of lust and infatuation are present. Also war.

Wild: He fits Sleeping Beauty's story the most, but that's already taken so the next best thing is Rip Van Winkle. It's only 20 years compared to 100, but I think it's the closest I'm getting for now, and the point is that he wakes up as an old man.

Sky: I think he should be the guy from the jabberwocky poem that uses the vorpal sword to defeat it. The jabberwocky is supposed to be the most powerful monster in EAH last I checked, so it would be the closest equivalent to Demise other than the Evil Queen.

Legend: Given that wizards are supposed to live a long time, Merlin would be a good fit for Legend because he'd have a few centuries to finish growing up into a mature wizard. He could still be a veteran of adventures this way without sacrificing his magical abilities.

Twilight: Unfortunately there aren't really any stories about wolves that aren't villains so he's tragically stuck being a non-descript farmer. I'm so sorry. Under other circumstances he'd get to be one the guy from "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" except that guy is a bear and not a wolf.

Wind: I'm torn between picking an infamous pirate or a story from mythology. Either one would probably work, to be honest, but it would probably work better if Tetra was a pirate's daughter and he's related to a deity in charge of ocean storms.

Hyrule: Ended up picking Jack the Giant Killer for him because that story's about surviving because you're clever, and Hyrule's games are supposed to be ridiculously hard. Also there's a magic sword involved.

Four: With the Minish he could totally fit into the story about the little elves that help the tailor/cobbler. But there's a story called "The Four Skillful Brothers" and I can't say no because it literally ends with them rescuing the princess via teamwork and splitting the reward.

Time: I feel like he'd fit in best as some kind of forest spirit or changeling, but as the Hero's Shade he could also be Godfather Death. I've been thinking about it and I really can't come up with a good placement for him.

Spirit Tracks Link gets an honorary mention because he is canon in my heart. Since New Hyrule is in the middle of the industrial revolution he's probably more of an urban legend. Either the ghost of a train conductor's kid or a guy cursed to see ghosts like his Zelda.

Final thoughts on a lovely journey

*deep inhale*

Please, come inside and sit with me for a moment while we discuss this final issue.

In all my years as a Stephen stan, I’ve never felt this happy to see HIM happy, cared for, surrounded by such meaningful and deep love. I had many beautiful moments so far *coughcough hellfire gala/savage avengers* but this one means the world to me, mostly because he’s reunited with the love of his life.

Love has always been the fundamental force that drives his very existence. He has never healed from the guilt and sadness for watching Clea leave. He couldn’t forgive himself and fell into self-destructive behavior, which later worsened and culminated in depression in the shape of Mr. Misery.

Stephen hasn’t been happy in a VERY long time by our standards of time. It was never clear that he and Clea were in good terms after Sorcerer Supreme by the end of the 90′s and Defenders v2/The Order, but he did go through A LOT ever since she left to lead the rebel army. After the conclusion of Sorcerer Supreme, he made a few cameos here and there until he was adopted by Bendis in New Avengers v1 and v2. He was loved by his teammates but he also made tons of mistakes due to his actions in the Illuminati. He could never forgive himself after what he did to the Hulk, and abusing dark magic only made him feel even more miserable, turning his back to Wong and Linda and embracing once and for all his self-destructive instincts in order to atone for his sins and mistakes.

Hickman’s New Avengers and Secret Wars were no different. They were a downhill towards his own perdition and posterior tragic death by the hands of one flawed man he loved to a fault.

And then v4 happened, the lowest Stephen has ever faced. Alone, fighting himself to preserve a friendship and struggling with his own flaws: his need to be in control, his insecurity, his white and half lies. He was NOT in a good place.

V5 was an exception because, well, not a good portrayal, let alone when it comes to continuity, although he did severe his relationship with Clea.

And then Jed had all the diligence to fix pretty much 30 years of pain, loneliness and Stephen’s inaptitude to be open about his feelings. In fact, Jed is more than willing to work hard and deep into Clea and Stephen’s marriage, and that’s the most important part of this last issue in my opinion.

Because, you see, it’s not the first time they merged and became one. There was one time when Dormammu and Umar forced them and it was pretty much a nightmare. But aside from that, it has always been consented by bonding their souls (with tons of implied sexual semantics, of course). Still, the point is, they deal with magic. I always mention that the magic community is deeper than any other bond in the Marvel universe, mostly because they tap into the spirit and essence of things. So love here... Sure, it’s demanding and takes lots of work, conversation, understanding, patience. On the other hand, when it comes to magic... It’s hard to explain but it’s pretty much how I personally feel about love. It goes beyond the limitations of the physical instance. It connects you to other person in such overwhelming levels of intimacy and trust. It’s not something that should be taken lightly because it goes DEEP.

And that’s precisely what Clea and Stephen’s relationship is all about. Jed, Ferreira, Poggi, Tartaglia, Petit and Garbett did a wonderful job in portraying the depth of this feeling. And it’s just so amazingly done that even when they merge in the being called Strange, they're not 100% on the same page. And this is literally what a deep and meaningful relationship represents. You’re not one with your S/O. You’re your own person. Your relationship creates a strong bond, but you and your partner(s) will disagree on many issues. You will have to find the balance between your needs and the sacrifices you’ll do along the way. Then again, it’s not just about romance. It’s a never-ending mutual journey of growth.

In short? Stephen and Clea are one, but also different in their own uniqueness. And they’ll have tons of work ahead to find said balance. Which is amazing because you don’t see this kind of approach in comic books very often. It’s mature and it reflects how far they’ve come together.

Strange actually reminds me of Garnet and Rupphire, and all the lessons we learned by watching their journey. Steven says Garnet makes it look so easy, to be in a stable relationship. But only Ruby and Sapphire know the ups and downs of their shared lives. And the struggles can only be overcome through kindness, acceptance, conversation, trust, and so many other details that come along with love.

It’s not supposed to be easy, but it IS rewarding. It IS special. It’s fuel to the soul and dew to the world.

Those were humble words to show my gratitude. It’s not just a reunion, but it’s healthy, mature and deeply meaningful. And it really means the world to me that Stephen is happy. It really does. So thank you. A thousand times thank you.

And we’ve reached another famous barricade speech!

Combeferre’s influence on Enjolras has been evident since Le Cabuc’s execution, but it’s even clearer here with his broader vision. First of all, his focus on science illustrates that Combeferre’s love of it – both for the sake of knowledge and as an instrument of “progress” – has gotten to him. “Natural law” is covered at length in the texts Enjolras normally draws on (Rousseau, for instance), but his references to trains and balloons are more specific. Combeferre is the Ami most interested in that, so he’s likely the source.

His internationalist inclination here also reflects Feuilly’s ideas, which embrace all nations. It’s fitting that he acknowledges Feuilly here in that sense. Combeferre has been seen planning with him this whole time, but we haven’t seen Feuilly as much (aside from him writing “vivent les peuples”), so this reference helps us make the connection between their visions. Overall, Enjolras incorporates his friends’ beliefs into his own, making him “incomplete” in that he doesn’t have to be complete on his own. Through the group, he’s able to construct a coherent vision for a brighter future.

Of course, this is still Enjolras, so we see his definitions of “liberty, equality, and fraternity.” His ideas on education call back to Combeferre, but he’s speaking his own language here, too, alluding to French Revolutionary principles and concepts like the social contract.

“The twentieth century will be happy” remains such a beautiful and sad line. On the one hand, it’s a bit inspiring to know that so many people in the 19th century truly believed that. I personally have issues with the notion of “progress” as seen in this novel, but it’s moving! They thought we would fix all of these problems! In hindsight, though, it’s tragic. The 20th century was a dark time, too, and we haven’t solved all of the problems Enjolras mentions. But that hope is important, and it still matters.

I also love this line:

“Whence should proceed that cry of love, if not from the heights of sacrifice?”

Love is the driving factor behind Enjolras’ actions, so he frames their deaths on the barricade as the ultimate expression of that.

“A tomb all flooded with dawn” is also a beautiful image (I’m almost positive that I’ve alluded to it before by accident, for which I’m sorry; I always forget where it shows up, but it really stuck with me). Enjolras is likely referring to a metaphorical dawn (the dawn of a better future), but literal dawn was recent, so I like to imagine that the barricade was flooded with actual light for this speech.

As much as I love many of these lines and as much as I love Enjolras, it’s hard to accept this speech uncritically. His universalism is appealing in that it offers hope for everyone and justice for everyone, but it also calls to mind French imperialism, which upheld French standards as “universal” ones at the expense of local cultures. His love of technological “progress” is uncomfortable for the same reason. Those instruments of “progress” were colonial, too, and the 20th century was full of technological destruction. I don’t want to reject him completely, either; I think it’s just that these ideas are hard to reconcile.
