Hot off the presses, it's the first (and probably only) issue of Vatore Magazine! Pick up your copy now to see all 22 (!) looks in detail, shop the must-have CC, and - most importantly - collect some new scraps of coveted Vatore lore. 👀
READ VATORE MAGAZINE (PDF)
So, yeah, guess who thought they were going to do a straightforward decades lookbook and ended up making things entirely too complicated? 🙋♀️ The visual side of my brain is always tickled when CC creators put together little catalogs for their collections. That was my initial inspiration. Then I did a half-baked magazine cover concept and wanted to make a better one. I used this template as a base, and the headlines ended up being the most fun part. Anyway, I don't know how many people will click the link let alone scroll through the entire thing, but you'll be rewarded with several paragraphs of Vatore history if you do. I did this more to properly establish their timeline for myself than anything else, but I put a lot of care and time into it, so I appreciate anyone who reads. ❤️

JACK THE GIANT KILLER
originally this was a kind of personal visual vibe test: I'm still turning some thoughts around about jack in my head (altho I have finished assembling the skeleton of a story and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when I start to press at it) but I really liked how it turned out so I'm posting it as it's own illustration :)
the first post about this idea is over here, but I've fine tuned it down a bit so that the story begins with jack finding the body of a giant while he's out in the woods one day, and the story spirals out of hand before he can stop it.
it's been interesting to read up on jack tales from a literary analysis point of view while I figure this story out!! and through the power of more coffee, I think. I'm close to pinning down an underlying theme I'd really like to bite into. I just need to condense it down to a couple of sentences instead of several paragraphs.
and to close this post out, here's another excerpt from the j.g. ballard's the drowned giant that haunts me!

So I was doing my 4? 5?? watch of Lockwood and Co the other night with a friend and I noticed something that I'd missed before. When Lucy holds Skull up to the mirror, before she passes out, she gets a brief flash of some visions. From what'd I seen in other rewatches, it looked to be a recollection of ghostlocked/dead people from the series (Norrie, Fairfax etc) but one image jumped out. I opened Netflix on my computer so I could slow it down and
Bam, it's Lockwood. Now this image certainly wasn't in the 8 episode series and it got me thinking. The previous images were of those Lucy had seen killed/ghost locked ending with a frost covered Lockwood?
It was set up for the conflict in the Hollow Boy, about Lucy worrying that Lockwood is going to die for her. Lucy got a brief future vision of the Fetch impersonating a dead Lockwood which would lead to the events of The Creeping Shadow. Basically I'm even more mad that we don't get to see Cameron all done up in frosty ghost make-up.

i think the reason why im so drawn to spirit tracks and pkmn scarvi is that having the legendary/princess as a companion rather than a goal that marks the games completion makes me feel satisfied the way i would after helping a friend
my brother always teases me about how I still havent finished botw after almost 7 years bc "id rather be out picking flowers" which i wont say is untrue. and yes i know Zeldas been holding off ganon for 100 years, yes i can get some sort of idea what her relationship with link was like by recalling memories and going through her diary. ive always loved botw for its unique storytelling and setting which makes it stand out, because it lets you get to know who you're saving.
but because theyre memories, it only works if theres something for the player to investigate that already happened. its retroactive (but effective nonetheless)
on the other hand, spirit tracks does something similar but instead of having the player try to piece together memories and interpret them as a spectator, you actually have an opportunity to get to know zelda yourself by talking to her and working together. besides making it a gameplay mechanic, giving the player control over how they interact with zelda makes it so much more personable.
and I find that making the goal feel personal instead of an obligation gives me more of a reason to work towards it. I know what kind of person botw zelda was but as the player, shes still very much a stranger to me. but spirit tracks zelda? thats my friend!!!! she invited me to go to the beach after we get her body back!!! i dont want to whip her to make her move faster thats mean :(
you know how hostage negotiators are trained to introduce themselves and get to know the person theyre negotiating with because its harder to hurt someone when you know what their favorite food is? its kinda like that, because it feels like im helping a friend than being told or led to do smth
and although i havent played scarvi myself, i feel an attachment to koraidon and miraidon even just watching playthrough clips because its like!! thats my weird scaly dog!! it loves sandwiches and we're friends!!! you know!!!!!!

a short fic about that one panel in particular— pakiss naman ako after, Makisig ໒꒰ྀི´ ˘ ` ꒱ྀིა
——♡——
Maliksi seethed in frustration as he watched the humans fall under his and Makisig's enchanting spell. He saw them as fleeting and insignificant creatures, driven by their insatiable desires and consumed by their own selfishness. To Maliksi, humans were merely vessels, pawns to be used for their own ends. He had long abandoned any hope of understanding their complexities, dismissing them as unworthy of his attention. Their adoration, in his eyes, was nothing but a shallow facade. He couldn't fathom why his brother, Makisig, yearned to understand these creatures so deeply.
"Bullshit! None of you swines actually care about him—" Maliksi's voice dripped with venom as he spat out his words, his hand defiantly flipping off the mesmerized crowd. But before he could finish his sentence, Makisig's imposing figure appeared before him, his eyes flashing with concern.
"Care about who, Maliksi?" Makisig's voice resonated with a mix of sternness and care, his presence looming over his younger brother. "Care to elaborate, bunso?"
Maliksi gazed into Makisig's eyes, momentarily taken aback by the intensity of his older brother's gaze. He took a deep breath, his anger giving way to a vulnerable admission. "I'm talking about you, Makisig. You're too kind for your own good. These humans, they don't deserve your compassion. They're nothing more than vessels, mere tools for us to exploit."
Makisig's expression softened, his voice laced with a deep sense of understanding. "Maliksi, I know you see them that way, but I can't help but believe that there's more to them. Yes, they can be flawed and selfish, but buried within them are flickers of goodness and potential. I can't turn a blind eye to that."
Maliksi's frustration boiled over, his voice tinged with a mix of anger and hurt. It just doesn't make sense— it's senseless. Stupid. He'd smash his brother's head against a balete tree if it means knocking some sense into him. "And what has that gotten you, Makisig? Their fleeting admiration? Their empty promises? They'll discard you the moment it suits them. You're wasting your time."
Makisig's gaze held unwavering determination as he gently placed a hand on Maliksi's shoulder. "I refuse to believe that, Maliksi. I choose to see the best in them, to believe in their capacity for change. Yes, I may get hurt along the way, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. For them, and for myself."
Maliksi's eyes locked with his brother's, a mixture of love and frustration swirling within them. Too nice, too nice. Smashing his head doesn't seem too bad right now. "You're too good for them, Makisig. They don't deserve your kindness." To him, Makisig's kindness was a flaw, a vulnerability that would eventually lead to his downfall.
Makisig, on the other hand, possessed an insatiable curiosity about humans. He was fascinated by their emotions, their dreams, and their potential for both good and evil. Unlike his brother, Makisig believed that humans held a depth of untapped wisdom and beauty that deserved exploration. He saw their capacity for compassion and sought to understand the intricacies of their hearts.
A soft smile graced Makisig's face as he leaned closer, their foreheads touching in a display of brotherly closeness. "Perhaps, Maliksi, but they are not the ones I'm trying to prove anything to. I do it for myself, to stay true to the person I want to be. And I hope that one day, you'll understand."
As the weight of their differences hung heavy in the air, Maliksi let out a frustrated sigh. He could feel the chasm between their perspectives widening, and the strain of their contrasting beliefs gnawed at his soul. With a heavy heart, he took a step back, distancing himself from Makisig.
Unable to fully comprehend his brother's unwavering faith in humanity, Maliksi turned away, his steps growing distant. The forest seemed to echo his internal turmoil as he retreated deeper into its depths. The rustling leaves whispered his frustration, mirroring the tangled thoughts that consumed his mind.
Makisig watched his brother's departure, a mix of sadness and understanding etched across his face. But despite the ache of their differences, Makisig held onto hope that one day, Maliksi would find his own truth, his own understanding.
