The Five Good Emperors of the Roman Empire (96 - 180 CE)

An infographic illustrating the succession of Roman rulers between 96 and 180 CE, known as the Five Good Emperors (a term unknown to the ancient Romans, coined by Nicolo Machiavelli in his 1531 manuscript Discourses on Livy and made widely popular by Edward Gibbon in his 18th century The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,) Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. Those were everyone but two of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty, with Lucius Verus and Commodus not making the cut. During the time of this “kingdom of gold” (Gibbon), the Roman Empire “was governed by absolute power under the guidance of wisdom and virtue.” (Gibbon) The 84-year period is widely accepted as the high point of the Empire, with Imperial Succession ensured through adoption based on merit and acceptance rather than a strict bloodline.

Princess Hendl of Erdhimmel was so mean to Contessa Vergia of Paxromana for no reason! All Contessa did was say Princess looks more like Berghold the Scarecrow than King Graupalt of Erdhimmel, and apparently that's enough for Princess to ban her from court forever. EVEN THOUGH Erdhimmel is trying to get Paxromana to ally with them in the upcoming war! Why does Princess want to look like King anyway? Isn't King like, super old and sick? I wouldn't mind being told I look like Berghold; he's kind of cute in a rat way.

Wait, what do you MEAN Princess is King's daughter? How am I supposed to know that when it's not mentioned in the story at all?

I thought King and Princess were their names!

I don't know! Nothing in this story makes sense, so I just assumed Princess- I mean HENDL won a high-ranking civil service position in last year's Rat Race or something. Rat Races! You know, like in NORMAL stories where everyone trains pet rats, then at the end of the year, all their rats get put in one giant obstacle course and the order the rats finish determines what job their trainers will have for the next year?

Interesting... I see... So in this story- Wait- All stories? All stories in this genre are like that? Ok... If I'm following correctly, jobs are usually determined NOT by Rat Race, but by who your parents are? And the ruler of nations is called the King or Queen, and their sons are Princes and their daughters are Princesses and they grow up to be rulers of nations too? Oh, I get it! The King's wife is called the Kingess, and the Queen's wife is called the Queeness! No? Well, that's stupid. Sorry! I didn't mean the entire genre is stupid. I'm just not used to this avalanche of new terms. Thinking more about it, this is actually a really cool setting! It's like breeding rats from previous Rat Race winners, but with people!

Wait- Are all the characters in this story rats or like anthropomorphic rats? That's so cute! Berghold would have little raggedy ears and Contessa would be one of those curly-furred fancy rats-

I mean, I'll still finish reading it so I can talk to you about it, but I don't think I'll get into Medieval European Fantasy. It's way too niche for me. I don't know how fans can memorise all this weird stuff.

Ara Pacis Augustae

El Ara Pacis Augustae, o Altar de la Paz Augusta en Roma fue construído para celebrar el regreso de Augusto de sus campañas en España y la Galia en el año 13 a.C. La estructura de mármol, que alguna vez estuvo en el Campus Martius, es una obra maestra de la escultura romana y, particularmente, del retrato. En los bajorrelieves del monumento están representados senadores, oficiales y la familia imperial en una procesión animada, quizá la misma procesión con que se consagró el sitio del altar el 4 de julio del año 13 a.C., o la procesión celebratoria para acoger el regreso del emperador.
