Over at a non-tumblr comics community, I posted one of my favorite Guy Gardner moments, that scene where he reunited with Ice after she was resurrected.
Tumblr media
I wanted to post it because I’m sick of fans and writers like Tom King thinking that Guy has never had any character development since 1990, and that he’s actually a far more complicated and likable character than he’s usually credited.
What was really interesting was the reactions, where there were a few people being dismissive of this scene. One person cited King’s Human Target as proof that “Guy is toxic,” while another said that “Guy Gardner is trash, it’s literally his only character trait lol. This is, like, a weird form of character assassination.”
What bugs me about these isn’t just the fact that these people haven’t read enough comics or know anything about Guy as a character. It’s how, when they’re shown a scene of him from actual CANON by one of the best writers to ever handle him (Peter Tomasi), their first reaction is to reject it rather than think “oh hey maybe there’s more to this character than I thought.”
I don’t know how much of this speaks to how loathsome Guy could be at his (brain-damaged, traumatized) worst: that he’s now defined by who he was for just a few years. That popular misconception of Guy has apparently engendered that much disdain from casual fans that they cannot accept that there might be more to him and his reasons for his past behavior. It’s like they actively want him to only be an asshole they can hate, and refuse to accept that there’s decades of canon showing that he 1.) was originally a good person, 2.) was a victim of traumatic brain injury combined with Hal Jordan being an asshole, 3.) has had THREE DECADES of character growth since then.
I guess all the canon and character development in the world doesn’t matter if people don’t or won’t read the actual comics. Some characters are doomed to be defined by their worst selves.

Dick Grayson the sexy museum curator
It was so on brand. Enough with the fanon himbo bullshit, I wanna see more of Dick Grayson the (canon) history nerd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's Dick being a bookworm and nerding out an issue earlier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's Dick enjoying a date with fellow history buff Deborah Poulos. And Dick, who understands legacy and loss more than anyone, toasting to the recently passed Bart Allen with Wally West (and Wally and Roy Harper ribbing him for being a geek).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe this is why he gets on so well with superhero historian Jesse Chambers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
History is so thematically important to Dick; he's the last Flying Grayson, the first sidekick ever and the first superhero to grow up. He passed the baton on as the first Robin, honored a Kryptonian heritage as Nightwing, was a mentor to a new generation of heroes as a Titan, and became the poster boy of LEGACY as Batman.

Small Damian Wayne comic because I recently finished Batman and Robin (2011) and it made me appreciate Damian even more (and inspired me to make this comic) :)

Bruce Wayne grieving the death of his son Damian Wayne (from 2013's Batman and Robin #18 by Peter Tomasi & Patrick Gleason).

I love the dynamic between Bruce Wayne/Batman and Damian Wayne/Robin. Damian's such a horribly traumatized mess who wants to be better and Bruce wants to help him be better. But Damian is struggling with the same flaws Bruce has. The same flaws Bruce has failed to fully overcome himself. But Bruce is really trying and he really understands and cares but is very repressed and has trouble showing it. Damian cares too but is too proud and bratty to show it. But when it's necessary, the walls can come down and they can show how much they really care about each other and it's beautiful. It's such a tragic and poignant dynamic.

Peter J. Tomasi, writer of the Super Sons (one of which has recently had a disastrous and narratively disappointing time-OSHA related incident), currently releasing what may be your last book for DC for the foreseeable future, what are you suggesting here sir, in your totally legally distinct "Sinister Sons" book?

For reasons, I’m reminded of the time Peter Tomasi wrote Batman rushing off to scour the city for Two-Face, only to find Harvey WAITING there right outside the Batcave, begging for help, doing the full “I didn’t know where else to go” hero/villain trope.

These are Dick's very first and very last pages in Tomasi's Nightwing run. In his first, he indulges in his new found passion for skydiving, alone, and in his last, he shares this passion with someone dearest to him; Babs. The run ends in Dick becoming Batman, not Bruce Wayne.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, here's a great DickBabs interaction in the middle of that arc where Babs calls Dick out on his shit, Dick seemingly waves it off and Babs somehow still gets Dick to deliver the thesis of the story.

Morrison: Damian didn’t know Talia until he was eight years old
Tomasi: Actually, he knew her from the beginning; he spent each birthday fighting her for the chance to—
Morrison: That’s nice anyway she put a bounty on his head and replaced him as her son with a rapidly aged baby clone because she’d rather he be dead than out of her control
