it’s Booklr Reads Australian Eve!
I’ve just gone and raided my library’s ebook catalogue to borrow all the books I wanna read 😂 I found most of my TBR but I’m so annoyed that one of the books was there last week but isn’t there now
anyway, I thought I’d take a quick moment to ask: what book are you starting the challenge with? 👀
I haven’t completely nailed down my decision but it’s probably going to be either Sugar by Carly Nugent or Inkflower by Suzy Zail ☺️
I’m so excited to start the challenge with you all! and if this is the first you’re seeing of it, it’s never too late to join! (unless you’re reading this on September 1st lol) grab an Aussie book and get reading!

Berke (girl me) is in charge of the body today <3
she and Aseman (demi-girl me) have been having an obsession with golbehi (light pink)
also, the book, I Am Change by Suzy Zail is amazing. im halfway through it and already recommend it to bookworms and feminists. it's about how women and girls are treated and looked upon by society, men and women themself in uganda (not sure, but it was set in africa).
muslim rep and class differences. there is a lot of talk about sex, periods, marrige and "pleasing men"
tw: rape, sexual assault, violence, physical abuse, an alcoholic charcter, and some others

No of pages: 340
Triggers: Forced marriage, underage marriage, genital mutilation, misogyny, masturbation, domestic violence, early childhood death, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, sexual harassment, sexual assault
Safe for work: No, there is violence against women, and there is one scene featuring female genital mutilation
Blurb:
Lilian has learned to shrink herself to fit other people’s ideas of what a girl is. In Lilian’s village in Uganda a girl is not meant to be smarter than her brother. A girl is not meant to go to school or enjoy her body or decide who to marry. Inspired by true stories, I am Change is the tragic but empowering story of how a young girl finds her voice and the strength to fight for change.
 Warning – SPOILERS AHEAD.
 My Review:
If I were to select one book that I’ve read so far this year (and granted, this is only my seventh) that changed my view of the world and changed my perspectives on feminism, this would be it.
I suppose some might say that Suzy Zail has no right to tell this story, as she is not of the same cultural background as the protagonist, and that no matter how much she has researched, no matter how much effort has gone into the writing, it isn’t enough, she hasn’t lived this experience – and ordinarily, I would agree with you.
However, in this case, I would ask you to go to Suzy Zail’s website (https://www.suzyzail.com.au/inspiration.html) and read what she has to say about the research she did, about the people she spoke to, about the care, the effort, and attention to detail that went into this book. Not only that, she has set up a fundraising initiative entitled “Help Girls Learn, Uganda”. All funds raised go to five organisations working to improve the lives of girls in Uganda. The goal is to raise $10,000. So far it has raised over $4000.
If that doesn’t speak to her commitment, compassion, and determination to get this right, I don’t know what does.
Before I go any further with this review, you should know that this is not a book for the faint of heart, or for those who have suffered serious trauma. I’ve read it and even though I got a lot out of it, it was still heavy going in places. If you’ve gone through the list of triggers above and don’t think you can handle it, please, in all seriousness, don’t read this book.
If, however, you do choose to read it, know that, despite the dark themes, there is a sense of hope and empowerment to be found.
My eyes were opened by this book. Lilian Chelangat, the “change” of the title, lives in a small Ugandan village with her parents and brother. She lives without many of the conveniences that most of us take for granted – no running water, no electricity, and food is scarce. Her family has known great hardship. Women and girls are treated as second-class citizens – ingrained in the culture of her ethnic group, the Baganda. They are subservient to males in almost every single way. They get taken out of school when they get their period and forced into marriages with much older men.
Books and writing are a lifeline for Lilian and she uses both to try and escape both the life she is living, as well as the life that her family wants for her – that she doesn’t. I really related to Lilian’s love of books and writing as so often they’ve been an escape for me too.
Lilian is one of the strongest characters I’ve read for a long time. She goes through some horrific things and is forced to watch the women in her life do horrific things in order to survive.  Lilian’s father makes a deal with her Uncle Beneh so she can get access to a good school in the big city of Kampala. But while on the surface things seem better for women, dark secrets lurk not far underneath. Lilian’s elder sister who ran away has been forced into selling her body and is a single mother, and Lilian’s aunt Amara – married to Uncle Beneh – tries desperately to conceive a son and endures horrific abuse at the hands of her husband.
But it is also in the city where Lilian finds her voice. She joins a feminist group at her school and learns that the indignities women are forced to suffer in her home village are, in fact, illegal. For the first time, she reads books by African women – and discovers Beyoncé! All of this empowers her to fight for change when she returns home.
Can you tell how much I loved this book? It made me realise how lucky I and so many women in the Western world are to have so much freedom and how much we take that for granted. We shouldn’t. Because as Zail points out in her authors' notes:
“Lilian and the characters who people her world are fictional, but their circumstances are real.”
Recommended for any feminist.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rowling
la saga di percy jackson, Rick Riordan
la saga di shadowhunters, Cassandra Clare
gomorra, Roberto Saviano
Hard Times, Charles Dickens (ce l'ho in inglese, in italiano presumo che lo troviate come tempi difficili)
The Help, Kathrynn Stockett
Liv Forever, Amy Talkington
La Pianista Di Auschwitz, Suzy Zail
Tredici, Jay Asher
Darkest Minds, Alexandra Bracken
Beautiful Creatures, Kami Garcia & Marfaret Stohl
Cercando Alaska, John Green
cluedo (come sopra)
trivial pursuit (uguale)

I Am Change by Suzy Zail
I Am Change by Suzy Zail: a #review of a #LoveOzYA novel by an #AWW author. This novel includes a cameo of a character with #Albinism
A review by Nalini Haynes
Lilian is a Ugandan girl dreaming of teaching while adults tell her she won’t amount to anything. The best she can hope for is to marry and keep her husband happy. At home her aunt teaches her to satisfy her husband sexually. While at school her education includes humiliations by wealthier students and male teachers. Outside of school, her mother expects Lilian to serve…

Find out what were my top reads for 2020!
 Loveless by Alice Oseman
I Am Change by Suzy Zail*
The Hunger Games Trilogy audiobooks, written by Suzanne Collins, read by Tatiana Maslany (yes, I’m counting it as a single book - otherwise it would take up too many spots on this list. It’s a reread too, btw)
I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman (yes, I know she appears on this list twice. She’s just THAT good).
Catching Teller Crow by Ambelin Kwaymullina* and Ezekiel Kwaymullina*
White Night by Ellie Marney*
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Dark of the West (Glass Alliance #1) by Joanna Hathaway
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins (I couldn’t not include this one, it had such an impact on me)
The boy who steals houses by C.G. Drews
* Australian author/s
Agree with my choices? Disagree? Let me know in the comments.
Further explanations for my choices below the cut.
So it was actually slightly tough to fill out this list!
The first three or four books were the ones I definitely knew would be there, but filling out the rest was a little harder.  The criteria I used to choose these books were a) the star rating I gave them, and b) the impact that they had on me.
The tenth spot was hardest to fill, since there were many good books I read that fit both my criteria. In the end I went with The boy who steals houses, because immediately after I finished it, I wanted to read more by the author.
As some of you might know, I’ve compiled a spreadsheet tracking the details of all the books I read in 2020, including the star ratings (out of 5) that I gave them. The number of books I rated four stars or above is totalled at 30. That’s nearly half the number of books I read in total - 62. So you can see how difficult it was to choose just 10!
The fact that I rated these books so highly is, I think, a real testament to the superb talents of the current crop of authors working today - and the reason I say “today” is because the books I rated four stars or higher were all written in the last 10-15 years, meaning many of these authors are still actively practising their craft.
Major, major kudos to them, and to all the publishers, editors, and everyone else responsible for making them available for the general public to enjoy. You rock!
