Okay as someone who is EXTREMELY nerdy about non-humanoid aliens depicted in media I LOVED this movie. The Vuvv are super weird, and tiny, and POWERFUL. Incredibly unsexy weird capitalist aliens. Go watch it!

Landscape with Invisible Hand is a strange film but a worthwhile watch. It plays around with the premise of the aftermath of an alien invasion though to the kind you'd expect at first glance. Basically, these aliens arrive on Earth with mixed reception until big businesses are the first to extend the olive branch in exchange of the aliens providing their superior tech which renders most jobs obsolete and plummeting most of the planet into economic upheaval.
We follow two families, one of many just trying to get by in this world though the film gradually shifts focus on the eldest son, Adam Campbell when he and Chloe, this girl he likes, get the idea to broadcast their romance to their alien overlords because romance is such an alien yet exotic and entrancing subject to them that they eat it up and pay for it. The humor is dry and the acting is good. Plus, the narrative takes a direction I wasn't expecting. In addition, I like how the son's art acts as chapter starters.

watched landscape with invisible hands last night and I loved it. It has so many layers about colonialism, reality television dating, capitalism, consumption, art -> content , poverty, and kindness. The acting in it is amazing, cinematography is thoughtful and engaging. But most striking to me, is how boring societal collapse was. This is an alien invasion movie with (almost) no explicit violence. There is no fighting, no armed resistance, no post apocalyptic disaster. It’s a cyberpunk horror future that feels like it’s happening right now. That the collapse we are in now will be boring and fast and the debasement we will face will feel dehumanizing and unlike anything else we’ve seen. Even the alien oppressors will be a little bit mundane. Fantastic sci fi horror. I was never scared but I was horrified the whole time. I went in completely blind and was blown away.

Landscape with Invisible Hand Final Trailer
Based on the novel by M.T. Anderson, Landscape with Invisible Hand takes place in a world where aliens have occupied Earth. Most of the humans are unemployed and destitute due to the aliens' advanced technology and bureaucratic rule. The aliens are interested in human life, though, and two teens decide to make money by broadcasting their dating life to the aliens. Unfortunately, their romance fizzles and getting caught faking love could plunge their families into deeper poverty.
The film adaptation of Landscape with Invisible Hand is written and directed by Cory Finley. The film stars Asante Blackk, Kylie Rogers, Tiffany Haddish, Josh Hamilton, Michael Gandolfini, and William Jackson Harper.
Landscape with Invisible Hand releases to theaters on August 18, 2023.
