Tony’s Childhood. Part 1: Identifying facts
Tumblr media
In the MCU, Tony sometimes acts like a kid. There is a reason behind every behavior, so I wondered what it was like for him when he was a real kid.
So, the questions of the day: what do we know about Tony's childhood? Did he have one? And, most importantly, how did it affect him?
Let’s first list what we know from the movies:
At age 4 Tony built his first circuit board (IM1)
At age 6 built his first engine (IM1)
Was sent to a boarding school by Howard (IM2)
Cracked the Pentagon’s firewall in high school on a dare (AoU)
Had a nanny until the age of 14 (IM3)
Went to college at 14 (IM1)
Built Dum-E and U when he was there (IM1)
At 17 graduated summa cum laude from MIT (IM1)
Continued his education until his parents’ death (CW)
Tony’s genius gave him two things: the brain and the pain. And by the pain, I mean that instead of interacting and bonding with his parents, enjoying life, playing, having fun, making friends, taking care of pets, and all the other things children do to gradually prepare for adulthood and grow up "healthy", he got this list of achievements. That doesn’t make a person normal.
Parents
Tumblr media
We know his relationship with Howard was complicated. Howard loved him in his own way. He had too many things to do to be a good father: SI, S.H.I.E.L.D., scientific projects, trying to build a better future with clean energy, etc. All good, except when you want your child to love you back. Especially if in the tiny amount of time you spend with him, you don’t show him any signs of affection.
What do we know about Maria? Her name, what she looked like, that she played the piano, and died at Winter Soldier’s hand on Dec 16, 1991. That’s it. She didn’t spend much time with Tony either. Remember, he even had a nanny, instead of a mother. Tony's words about her showed that he loved her, but he didn't talk much about her. Because she wasn’t present in his life enough. Why? Because…
School
Howard sent Tony to a boarding school.
Here’s in the S.H.I.E.L.D.s file we have this information about the school:
Tumblr media
“Phillips Academy, Andover, MA 1977-1984”
This means he was there from age 7 to 14. Howard sent him to a boarding school when he was SEVEN.
Phillips Academy Andover serves grades 9-12 only (it is a college preparatory school). Thus, either this is a mistake by the creators of the film/file, or Tony, due to his genius, became an exception. Since the early age he was already at school was also mentioned in IM2 tie-in comics, and in Earth-616 that was also 7, we can mark 1977-1984 as valid.
Tumblr media
Think about it again: Tony was sent to boarding school in another state when he was 7 years old. He spent another 7 years there, alone, among high school-aged teenagers. No parents around, no peers.
For example, even Hogwarts accepts 11-year-old children, and they live with their peers. Now imagine Harry Potter, at the age of 7, is thrown into a dorm with 7th-year students and locked there. Doesn’t make a person normal either, does it?
Nannies and Jarvis
Tumblr media
Since Tony was at the boarding school, there are two options for how he could have a nanny (mentioned in IM3) and spend time with Edwin Jarvis:
1) He was at the boarding school with a nanny. There is almost no possibility that the nanny was Edwin Jarvis because Jarvis was Howard’s butler and had other responsibilities.
2) He had a nanny at home in the summer and during short school breaks. In this case, his parents couldn’t even give him this little of their precious time.
In any case, he could only see Jarvis at home, a few months a year at most.
Tumblr media
Note: There is a date error in IM3, stating Tony was 14 in 1983. This is clearly an error and we can omit this detail.
Bullying
Remember this dialog between Tony and Harley in IM3?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
0:45:15 – Harley asks him how he knew he was being bullied at school. Tony doesn't answer. He gives him a non-lethal flash thing to "discourage bullying."
Tumblr media
We see that Tony knew exactly what was going on with Harley at school. Because that’s exactly what happened to him there. Harley reminded him of himself. Brilliant kid with no friends and practically no parents. He was bullied by 9th-12th graders.
If he had a nanny with him at the school, that probably made things even worse. He would be bullied because he has a nanny, and despite he has one to look after him.
In Part 2 we will discuss how all this affected him. Stay tuned.

A Different Beast
Tumblr media
Beast Wrestler (ビースト・ウォリアーズ "Beast Warriors") was one of the first monster fighting games. Released in 1991 for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, it is notable for its unique style and concept.
Tumblr media
Yasushi Nirasawa was the man responsible designing the game's monsters, dubbed Dragon Warriors. Nirawasa's designs have appeared in various Tokusatsu productions such as Kamen Rider, but perhaps his most famous would be the 2004 redesign of Gigan for Godzilla Final Wars (He was also responsible for the Xilien designs in the film as well).
Tumblr media
Back in 1991, Nirasawa was primarily known for his sculptures and models featured in, and on the covers of Hobby Japan. The box art for Beast Wrestler showcases his work. The image was prominently used in the print advertising.
Tumblr media
The Dragon Warriors all quite varied, ranging from humanoid animals to an ooze. Some with various levels of cybernetics and some had truly chimeric designs.
Tumblr media
Instead of randomized fights each match of the Tournament is fixed. The player is the "ruler" of a ENTSLL 2019 Dragon Warrior and starts at the bottom of the Domestic Rank to work up to the top of the World Rank.
Tumblr media
Yasushi Nirasawa did a six-page comic that was in the instruction manual for the Japanese version of the game. It gives a look at the world where genetically engineered 10 meter tall monsters battle in the arena.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aside from the designs and the setting, the other defining feature of the game is the concept of combining your Dragon Warrior with a vanquished opponent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first time, the player gets two options for combining. This sets up two different paths for completing the World Rank. Based on this decision, a different Dragon Warrior is used in each path to combine for a second form.
Tumblr media
While there is much to appreciate about the concept and designs, the gameplay is a shortcoming. The hit boxes don't correspond well and fights are slow. There are some loops and exploits that help with the difficulty, but that doesn't lead to a satisfying victory.
The game also has a Match mode for a fight against the computer or another player, using some of the Domestic and World Rank fighters. Unfortunately, this mode is also is subject to the same issues and the Dragon Warriors are very unbalanced.
Tumblr media
It would be fun to see this game made today with modern game technology and design. Yasushi Nirasawa's detailed creations could really come to life. Also, it would be great to see more and varied combinations of beasts.
With a little more time and polish, Beast Wrestler could have been a cult game. Instead, it's an interesting obscurity.

On the Forgotten Art of Crop Circles
Tumblr media
Source; Guardian UK crop circle gallery
Some of my favorite websites in the mid 90s were those of crop circle makers, with photo galleries, reminiscences, how-tos, and even a simple game using aerial photos of fields on which you could design your own.
I've forgotten most of the URLs, but one I do remember was circlemakers.org. Early, hand-coded websites may be a little confusing to navigate; let me drop you here for a little background history.
It's a fun look at a huge subculture — they had cons! — that blossomed in the transitional 90s between pre-internet society and today's. The infant web let them communicate, collaborate, and share their activities. Computers let them plan increasingly complex patterns. Hand-coded websites were a cinch for these geometrically-inclined problem solvers.
Yet the crapass nature of early search engines meant you would only find them through word of mouth or following links from sites you already knew about. Between that and the limited userbase of the pre-commercial web (mostly academics, nerds, and eccentric introverts), they could share their weird hobby right out in public while remaining largely invisible to the wider world. Sound familiar?
@brightlotusmoon your post mentioning "Alien Histories" ignoring the known authorship of Mothman reminded me of crop circles — "Oh, I know who started those; his name was Doug."
(Or was it? This account of a 1991 competition questioned whether Dave & Doug's 1970s crop circles really launched the fad. Other researchers have claimed to have found evidence of circles in older aerial photos or records. But geometric patterns are modern.)
One last item. Here's an account of a circle maker who recently hung up his boards due to very moden concerns. A pity—gorgeous art.

Captain Marvel: Part Seven
Pairing: Carol Danvers x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~2.3k
Warnings: canon violence and angst
Author’s Note: For the sake of the rewrite, Howard and Maria Stark dies on December 16, 1997 instead of 1991. Tony is 23 when they die.

x
The internet is a widely popular thing where people can use a computer to look up information readily available at their fingertips. The only places where computer use is free or at very little charge are local libraries. You take Vers to the closest one and over to the nearest computer. You're not used to using one of these, but it looks like something Howard Stark used in his labs.
Plus, you're an expert at using a typewriter.
"How are you doing that?" she gasps when your fingers swiftly fly over the keyboard.
"As I said, I've been here before." The only thing that pops up when you search the name "Pancho's" is a bar that's down south. You tap the screen with a smile on your face. "This is where we need to go."
"How are we gonna get there?"
"By using a map, darling. Come on."
You log off the computer and buy a map from the front desk. It's a localized map of California, so you can use this to track down the bar. As you two are looking at the map, a motorcycle rumbling noise comes closer until it's right next to you. He sees you two and revs his engine with a smirk.
"Nice scuba suit," he comments about Vers' outfit. Both you and her look at the man before going back to the map. "Lighten up, sweethearts. Got a smile for me?" When he gets no response from you, he shuts his motorcycle off with a scoff. "Freaks."
"What do you say we go for a ride?" you grin when he leaves his motorcycle alone.
"You know how to ride one of those?"
"Baby, it's all I rode in the 40s. My boyfriend taught me. First, we need to change. He's right, we do look like freaks." You notice a store across the street with mannequins on display outside of it. "Shall we?"
It's fairly easy to steal clothes off unsupervised mannequins from a store with no security measures. It's even easier to steal a motorcycle from a man who leaves the keys in the ignition. Vers gets on behind you and wraps her arms around your waist right before you take off down the road.
Yes, you could get to Pancho's faster by flying, but it's nice to enjoy the scenic route when there isn't someone chasing you or trying to kill you. It's nice to see how much Earth has changed since you left. Granted, you haven't been on the West Coast in centuries, so it's nice to see how the oceans look compared to back then.
The drive from Northern California to Los Angeles is a long one, but you manage to make to Pancho's with the sun still out. This place is definitely old school but you figured that's why you love it so much. There isn't anyone inside the bar but since Skrulls be anywhere anytime, you have to be careful.
There are pictures on the wall that Vers is attracted to, pictures with the same aircraft logo you saw on the purple device you stole from the Skrull.
"What can I get ya?" the bartender asks.
"Where was this photograph taken?"
"At an airport?"
"Where's Pegasus?" she asks.
"That's classified. Not unlike the file I started on you two." Agent Fury stands at the entrance of the bar. The bartender senses tension, so he does the smart thing and walks to the back. "I see you traded in the laser tag outfit for this. Grunge is a good look on you two."
"Did you have a rough day Agent Fury?"
"It's cool. You know, space invasion, big car chase, and got to watch an alien autopsy. Typical nine to five."
"So, you saw one?" you ask.
"I was never one to believe in aliens, but I can't unsee that."
"This is gonna get a little awkward but I gotta ask," Vers trails off.
"You think I'm one of those green things?"
"Can't be too careful," you shrug and sit with him and Vers at a table.
"You are looking at one hundred percent red-blooded Earthman."
"I'm afraid we're gonna need proof."
"Are we talking cheek swabs or urine samples?"
"No. The DNA would match," you comment. "Skrulls can only sim recent memories of their host bodies."
"Oh, oh! You wanna get personal," he grins and nods for you to start.
"Where were you born?" you ask.
"Huntsville, Alabama, but technically I don't remember that part."
"Name of your first pet."
"Mr. Snuffers."
"Mr. Snuffers?" Vers chuckles.
"That's what I said. Did I pass?"
"Not yet. First job?"
"Soldier straight out of high school. I got the ranks of full-bred Colonel."
"Then?"
"Spy."
"Where?"
"It was the Cold War and we were everywhere. Belfast, Bucharest, Belgrade, and Budapest. I like the B's. I can make them rhyme."
"Now?"
"I've been riding a desk for the past six years trying to figure out where our future enemies are coming from. It never occurred to me that they'd be coming from above," he says and points to the ceiling to represent space.
"Name a detail so bizarre a Skrull could never fabricate it," you ask and lean in closer.
"If toast is cut diagonally, I can't eat it," he says. "You didn't need that did you?"
"No, I didn't, but we enjoyed it," you giggle.
"Okay, your turn. Prove you two aren't Skrulls," Fury asks.
Without a second though, Vers blasts an energy blast towards the jukebox on the opposite side of the room. You move your right hand in a circular motion and a pool of water forms above it. Once big enough, you evaporate it so it's no longer there.
"How is that supposed to prove to me that you two aren't Skrulls?"
"That was a photon blast."
"I just manipulated water out of thin air."
"And...?"
"A Skrull can't do that. So, a full-bred Colonel turned spy turned SHIELD agent must have pretty high-security clearance. Where's Pegasus?" Vers asks.
Fury doesn't respond to you, so you lean in close with a threatening smile on your face.
"Take us to Pegasus or we'll find someone who will," you say seriously.
Fury sees an opportunity to get to know you and Vers, so he agrees to take you and Vers to the super-secret location.
"So, the Skrulls are an alien race that infiltrates and overtakes alien planets? You two are Kree? A race of noble warriors?" Fury asks as he drives through the desert.
"Heroes. Noble warrior heroes," Vers corrects.
"Well, she's Kree," you speak up from the backseat.
"What are you?"
"Xenian. My planet is on the other side of the universe. I'm also a shapeshifting Avatar that can control the elements. No, I'm not a Skrull."
"Okay, um, what do the Skrulls want with Dr. Lawson?"
"They believe she developed a light-speed engine at Pegasus."
"Light speed engine? I've got to admit, that's not the craziest thing I've heard today."
"Well, it's still early," you chuckle.
"What about you two? What do you want?"
"To stop the Skrulls before they become unstoppable."
"And...?" You and Vers are silent at his question. "Look, war is a universal language. I know a couple of rogue soldiers when I see one. You two have a personal stake in this."
"More so than others," you mutter.
Fury pulls up to the perimeter gate where there is a box meant for communicating to the main tower.
"This is a government property, turn your vehicle around," an officer says through the intercom.
"Nicholas Joseph Fury, Agent of SHIELD," Fury says and takes out his badge to show it to the camera.
"Place your thumb on the pad." When Fury did, the pad begins scanning his fingerprint. "One moment."
"Nicholas Joseph Fury. You have three names?" Vers asks.
"Everybody calls me Fury. Not Nicholas, not Joseph, not Nick. Just Fury."
"What does your mom call you?"
"Fury."
"What do you call her?"
"Fury."
"What about your kids?"
"If I have them, they'll call me Fury."
"You're cleared for access," the officer says.
"Thank you."
The gate opens and Fury drives down the long driveway into a tunnel that leads him into a parking lot of sorts where he is the only car there. You're about to head inside with Vers when Fury stops both of you.
"Hold up. You two look like somebody's disaffected niece." He grabs two gray SHIELD baseball caps and tosses them to you two. "Put these on."
"What is this?"
"It's the SHIELD logo."
"Does announcing your identity on clothing help with the covert part of your job?"
"Said the space soldier who was wearing a rubber suit. Lose the flannel." Vers takes off the flannel that is wrapped around her waist, and you two follow the Agent to the end of the car park that overlooks an airplane hangar full of planes. A security guard from Pegasus and two armed airmen approaches you three carefully.
"How can I help you?"
"We're agents of SHIELD," Fury announces and hands over his credentials. "We're looking for a woman named Dr. Wendy Lawson. Do you know her?"
"Follow me."
The officers lead you into the building and into a small room that looks like a waiting room. When he closes the door with only you three inside, you knew he has no intention of bringing you to Dr. Lawson even if she was here.
"Are you two familiar with the phrase 'Welcome Wagon'?"
"No."
"Well, this ain't it."
He places his thumb on the fingerprint scanner attached to the doorknob, but it won't give him access to unlock the door. Fury grabs a small device from his pocket, and Vers perks up at the sight of it.
"Is that a communicator?"
"Yeah. State-of-the-art two-way pager."
"Who are you paging?" you wonder.
"My mom. Don't worry, I didn't mention you two."
Vers tries using her fingerprint on the scanner even though she knows it's not going to work. There is a map of the facility on the wall that she checks out, so you decide to try your turn at the scanner. Instead of using your own DNA, you shift into the guard that took you in here knowing his fingerprint is going to work. Just like you thought, the light turns green, and the lock disengages.
"I got it."
Vers and Fury jump back from shock at your deep voice.
"What in the hell...?" Fury mutters.
You transform back into yourself and open the door with a smile.
"Easy peasy lemon squeezy. My powers aren't totally useless here."
"Impressive," Vers grins.
With the map in hand, you head to the nearest elevator so you can check out the archives. If any place is going to have information on Pegasus and Dr. Lawson, it's the archives. Immediately after stepping off the elevator, an orange cat appears and rubs all over Fury's leg.
"Hey, there. How are you?" Fury fawns over the small animal. He leans down to pet her, and Vers watches with a strange sense of déjà vu. "Oh, my goodness. Look at you. Just look at you. Aren't you the cutest little thing? Aren't you cute? What's your name, huh? What's your name?" Fury looks at her collar. "Goose? Cool name for a cool cat."
"Fury," you say with a smile. "Are you done?"
"Yeah." The door to the archives is protected by another fingerprint scanner, and Fury turns to you. "Are you gonna do what you did last time?"
Vers shoots an energy blast at the scanner. That's one way of unlocking a door. The archives room is completely dark but the further you walk in, the lights turn on since they are motion censored. There are hundreds of shelves with hundreds of boxes of all different types of information, but the only thing you're interested in is Wendy Lawson. They are in alphabetical order, so you head over to the 'L' section for Lawson.
"I found it," Vers says and removes the box about her. "Here's Lawson's plan for the light-speed engine." At the bottom right of the plans is a stamp concurring that the project was terminated. "I wonder why they terminated the project."
You grab a small notebook and go through the pages, but you don't recognize the language.
"What the hell is this?"
"Those are Kreeglyphs. She was Kree?"
"She's dead," Fury announces.
"What?"
"She crashed the ASIS aircraft during an unauthorized test flight and took a pilot down with her. That's why security here's so unfriendly. They're covering up a billion-dollar mistake. Oh, and your light-speed engine is toast."
He shows you the papers in his hands that confirm his story. There is a black-and-white photo of the crash site. It was taken from a satellite between a beach and a mountain, and there are tracks leading up to the circle caused by the explosion. The next photo is of the beach from eye level; the sand was pushed up into large ridges by the explosion.
"When did this happen?" Vers whispers.
"Six years ago. 1989."
"Who was the pilot?" you ask.
"Most of this thing is redacted, but there is a testimonial here from someone named Maria Rambeau. She's the last person to see them both alive." Fury's pager buzzes to life, but he catches the look on Vers' face before he could answer it. "Are you okay?"
"Mm-hmm," she nods stiffly.
"I'll be back in a minute."
Fury leaves, and Vers searches the box for more information on what happened. There is a photograph of Dr. Lawson, Maria, and another pilot near an airplane, but the one person who you and Vers stare at is Vewrs who was getting ready to board the plane. She was involved in the accident at some point, but you have no idea what happened to her and how she got involved with the Kree. You look back at the notebook and flip some more pages, and you stop on one that has a familiar-looking drawing.
"Vers, what does this say?" you ask and show her the notebook.
"It's the energy core that she used to build her engine with. She calls it the Tesseract." Your whole body shakes with shock, and your knees buckle underneath you. "Whoa, are you okay?"
"The Tesseract is what runs through my veins. It's why I can manipulate the elements."
"I wonder if it connects you and me. Maybe we share the same power. The Tesseract must run through both of our bodies, but we have different powers because you have another serum inside you.
"I'll be right back."

Battery Powered Rambler American, c. 1970.
AMC started working on battery-powered cars in the 1950s already, with a hybrid car project run jointly between AMC and Sonotone (the hearing aid manufacturer). This wasn't exactly new. Electric cars are older than internal combustion engines, and hybrid power sources were used in small warships in the 1890s already. But the auto industry is infamously resistant to change.
In the 60s, AMC partnered with Victor Wouk (considered to be the father of modern hybrids) to figure out how to use lithium in batteries to power a car. It didn't happen: lithium ion batteries wouldn't be figured out for some time, despite everyone and NASA trying to figure them out. Instead, they produced a 1969 Rambler American Station Wagon with a trunk full of Ni-Cad cells.
That is not this car. It IS a 1969 American, but clearly a two door.
Globe Electric (of Milwaukee) made a deal with Sears to sell automotive and radio batteries through the Sears Catalog in 1924. Rising demand convinced one of the owners of Globe to start the Union Battery Company (in Chicago) a year later. The two companies were merged in 1929. And rapidly became the largest manufacturer of replacement car batteries in the country. They remained the largest when they merged with Johnson Controls in 1978. Globe-Union was also, after a 1961 deal, the OEM supplier for AMC.
This photo was taken at the entrance to Globe-Union's headquarters (currently one of Johnson Controls' headquarters campuses) at 5757 N. Green Bay Ave in Glendale.
It's unclear what role AMC had in this car, but it set the Milwaukee Mile lap record for an electric car in October 1970.
Loaded down with 1200 pounds of standard car batteries in two banks, powering a 27 horsepower electric motor, shot the car around the track at the blistering speed of...
46.73 mph.
As configured the car could go about 50 miles on six hours of charging.
Which really isn't bad. Seriously.
Even though electric cars were going 100 kph (62 mph, considered an unattainable goal for cars at the time) at the end of the 19th century, those were flimsy little things with a lot more power to weight. Plus we have to consider the state of technology in 1970. Battery power hadn't changed much since those early electric cars. The type of chip we use for a wide array of power controls was only just developed and the microprocessor was a year in the future, so there was no fast charging and no digital power management. The illusive Li-ion batteries, which cut down on battery weight over lead acid or Ni-Cads, wouldn't be commercially available until 1991 after being in the R&D phase for 30 years, so it carried an additional car's weight in batteries.
Not bad, all things considered.
It's more surprising that with the ubiquity of electric cars in the early 20th century that one hadn't set a higher Milwaukee Mile track speed record, given that it opened in 1903

supernatural s4e11 family reunions
DEAN And what am I running from?
SAM From what you told me. Or are we pretending that never happened?
you fucking tell him, sam.
Tumblr media
i'm not sure what i know her from really, she's been in a lot of things. could be old old supergirl, or even her uncredited role in a seinfeld episode because those have all been seared into my brain. maybe city slickers!!
Tumblr media
seinfeld s3e19 the good samaritan - helen slater as becky gelke (uncredited)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
helen slater in city slickers (1991) and supergirl (1984)
and me just realizing in my head city slickers and when harry met sally take place in the same universe because of billy crystal and the dude the with mustache are in both.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
the magicians s2e1 knight of crowns - karin konoval as the kitchen witch
AND I'D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT
Tumblr media
i did not watch this season because it was post-the Very Bad Thing involving quentin coldwater, but they in fact DID NOTHING with the candy (kitchen) witch. NOTHING HAPPENED. she had quentin's blood. no nothing. the end. fuck you. *bitterness intensifies* maybe that was their little joke. i've let go a lot of my feelings about sera and how she was involved with the magicians fuck up, it sure seems like a lot of it is on the other showrunner john mcnamara (and honestly realizing how young she was when she started writing on spn had something to do with it, hell she's younger than i am), but she was involved and things like this get my back up all over again. deep breaths.
okay karin konoval has also been in 3 episodes of the xfiles - two iconic ones and one.. i don't remember at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the xfiles s3e4 clyde bruckman's final repose / s4e2 home (it was her 😩)
Tumblr media
the xfiles s11e3 (2018) plus one
Tumblr media
me: that looks like the 13 reasons why kid, but i bet it isn't, i would have noticed when i looked up the rest of the cast. oh. it is.
for something i actually enjoyed (the docudrama about elizabeth holmes, it's really well done),
Tumblr media
the dropout (2022) s1e6 iron sisters - dylan minnette as tyler shulz
why are we getting to know this family and their issues. emotional music swelling, what are we doing on a farm, talking about zucchini.
Tumblr media
this, i think, was a much better spooky implementation of climbing inside the walls vs that episode with jo.
Tumblr media
ok.
now this feels like an actual homage that landed for the x-files home episode. nice little circle getting one of the actors from it too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
doesn't dean already carry enough guilt, did they really need to put 10 years of enjoying torturing souls on top of it. edgelord shit.
sometimes media crosses this line with me where i feel like it's emotional manipulation and i get pissy. like if a show is engineered to make you cry a minimum once an episode (looking at you this is us), it really puts me off and i'll lose interest. in this case, i'm heavily invested in the characters, but the angst despair anxiety etc.. at some point, i get mad about it. walking a fine line right now.

Wanted to share proper pics of this card. Rollo is one of the most important characters to me, so finding this obscure merch was really special. The back even including info was a nice surprise, I think the title they gave him is really cute!

Many degrees of Doctor Stark
It is widely known that 616 Tony has several doctorates. The number varies from 3 to 7, but it doesn't really matter whether he is 300 or 700% Doctor. He is one. And he doesn’t use his title 99.999% of the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok, but what about the MCU?
It is never mentioned whether Tony has a PhD or even a master's degree. Kinda weird. Both the absence of mentions and lack of degrees, since Tony is so smart and productive.
Let’s check, maybe he actually has some.
Here we have a file from a deleted scene from The Avengers (2012):
Tumblr media
As we can see, the work is sloppy – there are inaccuracies in his hair color (it’s not black, it’s brown), and the fact that he speaks French was not included. Can we rely on this paper? Let’s not 100%, but we can still use things that don't contradict the movies.
The fact that he received his BS in Engineering from MIT does not contradict this, so we can mark it as valid. He started in 1984 when he was 14 years old and graduated in 1987 when he was 17.
We see no further education in the file. But we know something that this file doesn’t. We watched the movies.
Remember, in Civil War at 0:13:25, in the scene where Tony sees his parents for the last time, Maria tells Howard, “Be nice, dear, he’s been studying abroad”. Tony is 21 here, this is December 16, 1991. Looks like he is on winter break.
Tumblr media
But wait… Didn’t he graduate in 1987 and stop then? Well, Maria tells us he continued.
Between 17 and 21 there are 4 years. What could he have done in these 4 years? A lot, right? He is smart and productive, we know that. A master’s degree usually takes 2 years. Tony could earn it in 1. 1 or 2, we still have 2-3 years that we need to fill with some kind of studying. I doubt he just went back and got another bachelor's or master's. That said, he was working on his PhD.
We don't know where. “Abroad” is a very broad concept. Maybe he went to Europe to study at Oxford? We do not know. Perhaps he stayed at MIT and just went somewhere else for the fall semester. We do not know. But he did go somewhere for (most probably) a PhD.
The question is: did he finish it?
Well, his parents died in Dec 1991, and we know from the first Iron Man (0:04:50) that Stane was the interim president of Stark Industries from that date until 1992. Most likely, Tony became CEO before his birthday, that is, May 29, which corresponds to the stated age of 21. He had a few months between.
We don’t know where he was in his degree at that time. But we know he is smart and productive. He doesn’t need 4 years to write a dissertation.
So, there are 2 options:
1) He did not complete his doctorate and devoted himself entirely to the company;
2) He completed it in the few months he had and then took over the company.
Here’s the evidence for the second option:
“Confusing matters more, a recently deleted LinkedIn profile for Tony Stark indicated he received doctorates in engineering physics and artificial intelligence.”
Source: https://alum.mit.edu/slice/who-iron-man
Given all the information and analysis we have, as well as a little logic, we can conclude that Tony has a Ph.D. Even two. He had time to do them. Why doesn't he use his title? Well, maybe for the same reason 616 Tony doesn’t? He doesn’t usually brag. Check out this post if you have any doubts about my statement.
Here are some additional hints:
He gave lectures at scientific conferences (IM1 and IM3 - Bern 1999).
His scientific expertise was not limited to engineering and his company's affairs (all the movies, but specifically I can point you to IM3– the scene with Maya Hansen and her Extremis-enhanced plants in Bern).
“He must have graduated after 1990, because the '90 Brass rat was the first one with the skyline on the edge.” MIT alumni commentary https://alum.mit.edu/slice/who-iron-man
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conclusion (actual): call him Doctor Stark, guys, he deserves it. Despite his modesty about his scientific achievements, Dr Stark has a couple of master's degrees and at least two PhD degrees in the MCU - in engineering physics and artificial intelligence.

TRIGGERS: parental abuse tw, toxicity tw.
A single moment has more power than anyone would dare admit; a split second; a mistake; an error of judgement that decides the fate of the next second, and then the next… until there’s no more left.
A loose bolt — shaken loose, can dismantle a well oiled machine. Send it crashing to pieces; a crushing weight of responsibility acts much the same.
There is nothing sanctimonious about it, there is no pleasant drift off into an ocean to be taken by darkness. It is brutal, unforgiving and without mercy. The only comfort that clouds the minds of those prey to their own misdeeds, is the haunting curse of hindsight.
The what if’s; the if one could turn back the clock and change something —- those futile little pleads can be heard, loudly, but often, it’s even more regrettable than succumbing to the inevitable abyss.
A broken heart outweighs it all; there are far worst things than death, in some eyes.
There’s always been stories of things that go bump in the night. Often passed down from one generation to the next, real horrors that would sicken the unsuspecting. And what young impressionable child ever expects to hear the chilling tales detailing how monsters stole lost loved ones? The kind of beasts that send little girls to bed with one eye open and invoke nightmares the moment that eye falls shut.
Because it does only take a moment.
And the difference between those little children and Izara Levine, was that Iz would wake up the next morning. Sweating, screaming — a nightmare invoked by a mother who loved to scare her child to sleep. There was no comfort. A household of toxicity; there was always a lesson to be learned, somewhere.
Not everyone had the blessing of being protected by innocence, parents who ensured she was prepared for the never ending war of the world; a childhood without wool over ones eyes. She’d sleep with a knowledge of the harshness of outside her walls, knowledge of exit strategies and made promises she didn’t understand to troubled, paranoid parents who believed the world was out to get them.
Izara has no explanation for her bravery, besides childish wonder — because she wasn’t always afraid to go to bed at night. Didn't cower when the doors locked. Sometimes, on good nights, she'd scamper through the dark with a torch — crawl through those little shortcuts curious children discovered when their guardians weren’t looking, and find a reason to no longer be scared.
A child can only get so terrified before they become desperate for sanctuary.
Axel Reyes was hers.
And he had been since she could write her own name, then later his — and then still when they both signed off school papers, and found reasons to enjoy the slithers of childhood they had left.
She was a spirit, always smiling then — fuelled by the belief that they could defeat all those stories her mother told; the fairytales with dark endings. Numb, and desensitised as she grew, she found comfort in tinkering - engineering things that would trap night time monsters; did everything she thought could give her an edge in a brutal world. And always the mischievous one sneaking additional crafting supplies into school, and parties.
The next morning, new graffiti ended up on the walls of the science block.
To counter the vandalistic tendencies, she had an eye for recycling the things lost to time, and making them anew. Trinkets she could artfully redesign for art pieces, another kind of gift for Axel and eventually, on a larger scale, they planned to rent a garage when they left home. She liked the carpentry, the paint that clogged up the cracks in her art gear. A knife her pallet knife, often clamped between teeth as her hands busy away with her makeshift tool belt. Made herself.
She saw less of her parents; their monsters, and more dreamlike things in the way she echoed old traumas to new creations.
Just as when they got older, matured; it became obvious that Izara and Axel were not sharing a bed because she was avoiding nightmares anymore.
The Kit she was rarely seen without, worn with each day attached to her hip. From art supplies, to crafters tools, to bandages. Izara liked to be prepared for it all — when creativity struck; when the world became a little too much for someone who were forced to enter the outside with different eyes; the childlike ones, she knew reality was as truly unkind as her parents had once taught her.
But, with Axel. She made the very best of it. And after high school, she apprenticed at a mechanic’s garage. Dirtied fingers, an oiled up tool belt — and a sight for the crafts. She found that monsters from childhood seemed so far away. Stories were spun into Grimm fairytales, and she had charge of her own path.
Eventually, amongst the garage, it became a running joke; “Kit” became her doted name - and emergency response would just be “Get Kit”, and everyone just knew. A car needed a better set of eyes, a bike needed a custom mod nobody wanted to take on. She’d take the challenge, and she’d charge them for the extra creativity.
Axel and Izara were good; a team, had secrets between them that would never be voiced to another soul. Bravely fierce in how they overcame unorthodox childhood’s, nobody made her smile quite like Reyes could. Or laugh, or gave her quite the muse to mural the walls they passed with such passion — mostly, at the cost of taxpayers — and another, as a finger to the government for trampling on her engineers of the art world.
Kit had made waves as an apprentice, learned the trade — had a standing; proven herself to be a creative just as she was a proficient mechanic. Found the mischief in her smile; her place amongst the dark of the world.
By the time they’d ended their teens, they were known to be inseparable.
So came the ring.
And so came the downfall.
The day her heart broke into pieces and shattered the visage of there ever being good in the world. Monsters, like in her childhood stories had nothing on this — nothing on the pain of heartbreak. She knows dramatics. She remembered dropping her gear, she remembered running to find answers, fingers in her tool kit for something to help — like she could tinker her own heart back together; bandage it up. Anything. She did not understand that New York was rife with unpleasantries. Distance, fears, and the distrust that had driven a wedge between them had extinguished the beacon of hope.
It hurt more than the stranger offloading a bullet in the garage did.
Whilst the pain that tore through her shoulder was agony. The culprit was already gone by the time anyone came to Kit’s aid.
She didn’t understand; neither did the police. Unprovoked shooting, at a relatively small time garage. Where’s the motive? Where does the blame go?
Where was anyone? Where was he?
Kit thought she would die.
Maybe she wished she did, in that moment knowing Axel had cut her heart in two the day before.
Kit recovered. Her heart did not. Yet, her hands did, her muscle movements came back; her spirit snuck back in and she focused on her work, her engineering — the cars; the bikes. Felt new comfort in oil stained fingers that she did her best to be the survivor of sheer bad luck.
Her heart, it knows different.
Then, when the small world of New York finally become claustophobic; desires to see the rest of the world came. A backpack, a story in every new town, village, city — something other than New York, and it's small-minded people.
She’s haunted by those nights, plagued with memories that remind her of what she’s lost almost a decade ago. And eventually, when funds ran out, she had to come back. She had to work; to fix broken things.
Kit remains a crafter, found odd jobs across the city for businesses that required something that the vandal artist could capture. She started smiling again, albeit, a broken one.
But she never publicises where she came from, what she went through — her scar, if she could help it, a new fear that despite how near a decade of adjustment had treated her with as much kindness as a slow falling sledgehammer. Kit wasn’t about to trust anyone with any piece of her again.
➵  CONNECTIONS
SAL LEVINE | Father. ROSE WICKE | Mother. AXEL REYES | Ex-fiancé. CLARK CAIN | Friend & regular client @ Kit's repair shop. LUIS CARRASCO | Unoffical Bestie & Backpacker buddy.
➵  HEADCANONS
She wears her engagement ring on a chain around her neck.
Small hole-shaped scar above her left collar bone from the shooting, over a decade ago.
Free spirited, attempts to make light of any situation where she can.
A little rough around the edges type of gal. An entire list of bad habits she doesn’t think are actually bad habits.
Handmade Kit at her waist 90% of the time, tools and first aid equipment etc. She’d feel naked without her belt.
Reluctant to befriend anyone on the first encounter; trust issues through the roof; old habits die hard.
Likely to pull a wrench on someone if there’s some bad vibes there.
Estranged from her parents, cut them out after highschool. Doesn’t keep in contact if she can help it.
Has been through ( and sometimes still does ) a graffiti phase where she tagged some street art around NYC, with a ‘K’ for Kit. She’s not Banksy, but she’ll definitely say she’s the Van Gogh of wall murals.
Now rents out a garage space for herself; self employed, from a shady person she barely trusts. Asks for cash, which she provides. Usually, asks for cash from clients too. Makes life easier.
Like any good cookie, has some tough outside to get through, but is soft inside — once one breaks through the childhood, and teenage trauma.
